View Full Version : Why not more use of Cyclone/Typhoon Missile Launchers?

Hi Peoples,

I was thinking about it recently, and I came upon the notion that there is an existing basis for a load more variant of Marine vehicles. The idea stems from the IMO underused Cyclone/Typhoon Missile Launchers (Now abbreviated to CTMLs ;)).

They could be used as sponsons on a variant of the Land Raider, probably the standard Phobos pattern as they are quite heavy weapons. Costed around the same, I would think it would make an interesting addition from Fluff, Model and Rules perspectives.

A CTML could be used as the turret weapon of a Predator, it's about the right size IMO and would make for a cool looking model.

It could also be used on the Dread, as a replacement for the overcosted and underused standard missile launcher. Again, it would make an interesting change to the standard Twin Autocannon "Rifleman" set up, for a few more points. And the look of a single Dread having 2 of these and firing two spinning smoke trails is quite appealing to me.

Just thought I would share my musings ;).

the cyclone has lost all it's appeal. it hasnt been any fun since it lost the ability to fire salvoes (which, IIRC, Dread missile launchers could do too).

Has it? Check out any of the "competative" SM lists out there. All seem to include Cyclones (now favoured over AC's) and LS Typhoons out the wazoo.

Dreads should have had it since 3E. I wouldn't be surprised if we someday see Dreads as well as Predator and Land Raider variants with CML's/TML's. I'd be fine with it so long as the cost was not too low or too high.

I love mine, and miss them a lot since I stopped playing SM in favor of my IG. 3 of them, whether in one FA FOC or spread out across all three were an invariable staple in my SM lists. As for your hope of mounting them on tank chassis' and dreadnoughts, I hope not. We already have the rifleman mechs from battletech (http://brianscache.com/unseen/tro-rifleman.jpg). Please don't have us rip off the longbow (http://brianscache.com/unseen/tro-longbow.jpg), catapult (http://www.solaris7.com/TRO/HTMLBattleMech/BattlemechInfo.asp?ID=3973) or the jenner (http://www.solaris7.com/TRO/HTMLBattleMech/BattlemechInfo.asp?ID=875).

Rifleman, & Jenner - first experienced them in MW2 in 1995
Catapult & Longbow - first experienced in MW4 in 2000.

the dates are personal experience, and may have appeared in older versions of the game (though I always wanted to see the wasp, but never DID see it :().

There is the Whirlwind Hyperios from FW. It is essentially a C/TML with an AA mount. I agree with the idea of a Predator Typhoon (Maelstrom, Tsunami?) though. With an option for either Autocannons or regular MLs for sponsons.

I've been thinking of using a Typhoon missile system on a Stormraven (in place of the Hurricane Bolter sponsons). I guess I just like the idea of it hovering in place, launching salvos into a Greater Daemon or something. As for missiles on a Predator, I would say go for it! Any conversions are better than none and I think it could look cool.

You can go back into the mid-80s for all of those in the BT-TTG ;).

I love cyclones! I dont see why someone wouldnt want them. In my last game, my sole terminator with them took out a defiler with it, then a rhino, then shot the face off a couple of raptors before finally dying to a deamon prince!

the fact it fires two krak missiles, while moving, is amazing to me.

Forge World have been doing them since long before the Rifleman made it into the vanilla dex:

And nevermind that half those designs are from the original Macross series. It's not like Battletech invented the walker with symmetrical arm-mounted ranged weapon systems concept.

As for why there aren't more C/TML variants of Marine vehicles, it's because until 5th edition and those system becoming two shots, they were just regular missile launchers with a specific designation based on what they were mounted on. Yeah, it may be good to have a missile Predator, but that would take a new kit, and upgrading the Dreadnought launcher either an errata or new codex.

Everyone knows the Caestus Assault Ram was inspired by the SDF anyway. Hello, Daedalus maneuver?

No fair. If anyone should get cool Robotech toys it is my Tau. :p

I figure if people are going to assume they are a lame anime army anyway, I may as well get to go all out with anime tropes!

You know you want a Veritech Fighter ripoff piloted by R'ck H'ntrr...
