Well, it’s been quite some time since the 5th Edition Tyranid Codex came out. I would like to collect some statistics from fellow players and fans regarding this edition of the Tyranid Codex, for some of my own R&D purposes. It should take 10 minutes at most to complete.

This survey uses a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being the lowest score, and 5 being the highest. To put it simply:
1 would mean “I totally hate it” or “I would never field this unit in a game”
3 would be “I think it’s average and acceptable” or “This unit is ok, quite standard”
5 would be “I love this, real awesome” or “This unit is very efficient, absolutely necessary when I play”

For the evaluation of specific units/special characters, please evaluate based on criteria such as how effective it is during game-play or how efficient it is for the points it costs. Please do not use criteria such as the aesthetics of the model or how “cool” the fluff for it is. Also, please evaluate based on the unit/special character’s own merit. For example, try not to rate the Termagaunts better because of it’s synergy with the Tervigon, and vice versa.

Thank you all in advance for your time.

(1.) The Background Information and Introduction, or “Fluff”
3

(2.) The individual description/entries for the various Tyranid Broods and Special Characters
4

(3.) The implementation of Tyranid’s Universal Special Rules (Synapse, Shadow in the Warp and Instinctive Behavior)
1 - but this is heavily biased by the subsequent FAQ which ruled SitW does not affect psykers in transports for some bizarre reason. I would have given it a 3 otherwise.

(4.) The rules for the weapons, upgrades and armour save values for the Tyranid army models in general (can also compare to 4th or previous Editions)
4 - Fairly well balanced

(5.) The Hive Tyrant
4 - Pretty incredible unit, but very point expensive

(6.) Tyrant Guard
3

(7.) The Swarmlord
4 - same as Tyrant

(8.) The Tervigon
5 - Really one of the best units in the Codex

(9.) The Tyranid Prime
4 - would have given this a 5 if the FAQ did not have the bizarre ruling that it can't join Warriors it was tailor made to lead in a mycetic spore.

(10.) The Parasite of Mortrex
2

(11.) The Hive Guard
5 - Maybe the best unit in the codex.

(12.) The Lictor
1 - Incoherent rules which do not work well together (bonus to reserves & deepstrike scatter reduction for a unit that won't be able to grant it until turn 3 at best due to it's own need to come in first at which point it's usually worthless), IB:Lurk on a primarily CC unit, no independent operation, zero balance within the elite FOC, no chance to take Deathleaper as an upgrade char (like BA Corbulo would be as priest) to save on over crowded Elite slots.... For such an amazing model and a unit with such awesome fluff, this is quite possible the single most disappointing thing in the codex, as it was once one of my favorite in the past.

(13.) The Deathleaper
3 - I'd bump this to 4 if he had been available as an upgrade character for a Lictor unit.

(14.) The Venomthrope
3 - Decent, fun, but sadly lacking IC status.

(15.) The Zoanthrope
4 - Pretty amazing unit, but less by comparison to Hive Guard and against the plethora of anti-pysker defense, and the SitW FAQ ruling.

(16.) The Doom of Malan’Tai
4 - I'd have bumped this to 5 if he had been available as an upgrade character for Zoanthropes.

(17.) The Pyrovore
1 - This unit needs drastic re-work.

(18.) The Ymgarl Genestealers
3

(19.) The Tyranid Warriors
3

(20.) The Genestealers
3

(21.) The Mycetic Spore
5

(22.) The Termagaunts
3

(23.) The Hormagaunts
3

(24.) The Ripper Swarm (without tunneling)
2

(25.) The Ripper Swarm (with tunneling)
2

(26.) The Tyranid Shrikes
4

(27.) The Raveners
3

(28.) The Sky-slasher Swarms
2

(29.) The Gargoyles
4

(30.) The Harpy
3

(31.) The Spore Mine (including Clusters and those from Biovores)
3

(32.) The Carnifex
2 - Too point heavy for it's function, not truly awful, but not internally balanced especially vs Trygon option.

(33.) The Old One Eye
1 - Takes a unit that is already too point heavy for its function and makes it worse.

(34.) The Biovore
3 - Good for hordes, but there are better Heavy choices available

(35.) The Trygon
5 - Really amazing unit

(36.) The Trygon Prime
4 - for what you get as upgrade over regular Trygon, I think too point heavy

(37.) The Mawloc
3 - Fun, but not as strong as the Trygon

(38.) The Tyrannofex
2 - Far too point heavy for its function

(39.) How would you rate the support given from the Tyranids FAQ, in terms of completeness of questions/queries answered?
2 - A fair amount of common sense rulings, a few balancing rulings in terms of the Doom & lash whips vs banshees, but it was incomplete and failed to answer quite a few frequently asked questions and came with some bizarre and horrible rulings like Shadow in the Warp not affecting psykers in vehicles, and the Tyranid Prime not being able to join Warriors in a mycetic spore, so overall I have a negative opinion of it.

(40.) What score would you give the Codex overall, taking into account the quality of previous editions of the Tyranid Codex?
4 - Overall more good than not... competitive, interesting, it makes them "feel" like the macro-organism they are... but not great, it lacks some internal balance (Trygon vs Carnifex), and has a few units like Lictors & Pyrovores which are pointless outside of taking them for fluff reasons compared to other units in their FOC slot. Still a very good codex overall though.

Also, please evaluate based on the unit/special character’s own merit. For example, try not to rate the Termagaunts better because of it’s synergy with the Tervigon, and vice versa.
Given that the Tyranid codex relies rather heavily on synergy between units, and some units seem to exist largely for the specific purpose of buffing other units (eg. Venonthrope), this will surely lead to some rather squewed results.

Why not set up a web survey? It'll do all your collateing for you...

Why not set up a web survey? It'll do all your collateing for you...

I was thinking the same thing, a site like Survey Monkey (http://www.surveymonkey.com/) can do it for you for free and makes it easy to set up - and easier for respondents to fill out.

1
Answered a lot of "No, duh" questions, rulings were inconsistent with other codexes.

(40.) What score would you give the Codex overall, taking into account the quality of previous editions of the Tyranid Codex?
3
The few 4 and 5 ranked units keep this codex afloat. The codex in general has poor internal balance (I'm looking at you, Elite slot!), overpriced upgrade options (I forgot stranglewebs were in the codex) and botched special rules (lol Trygon tunnel). Compared to previous editions, the "soul" of what was Tyranids has been strippped away, and Nidzilla is still around, just with different MCs (Fexes and Tyrants turned into Tervigons, Hive Guard, and Tfexes/Trygons)

(1.) Background 2 - Adding in Characters was tooth-grindingly annoying. Nids didn't need Tyrannus Calgar.

(2.) Descriptions 4 - Nice.

(3.) Universal Special Rules 4 - I like how synapse works now. Dropping ID immunity was good.

(4.) Weapons, Upgrades and Armour 2 - Lots of upgrades simply vanished. Inexplicable nerfing of weapons. Still too few INVS

(5.) Hive Tyrant 3 - Expensive and fragile for an MC.

(6.) Tyrant Guard 4 - Expensive but useful and effective.

(7.) Swarmlord 5 - Can't customise him but who cares.

(8.) Tervigon 3 - A staple. Not good considering the complaints about Nidzilla.

(9.) Tyranid Prime 5 - Great unit but stupid name. Should have been called an Alpha Warrior.

(10.) Parasite of Mortrex 1 - give the enemy Killpoints in exchange for an HQ slot.

(11.) Hive Guard 4 - Very good but really should have been a Heavy Support Choice.

(12.) Lictor 2 - Should be a killer not a sneaker. Poor stats - All midsized Nids should be T5 to make up for lighter armour and lack of INV saves. Not actually very good at his job.

(13.) Deathleaper 3 - Better but a waste if enemy doesn't have a psyker.

(14.) Venomthroape 4 - Underratted support unit. Mindless Copy Paste of stats leaves a beast with no shooting attacks with BS4 WS3 instead of WS4 BS2

(15.) Zoanthroape 4 - solid choice but suffers from Toughness issues. Also, being living artillery it should have been in Heavy support.

(16.) Doom of Malan’Tai 4 - Da Bomb. Undercosted.

(17.) Pyrovore 1 - W. T. F. What they did: copy/paste the backfield Biovore's stats onto a frontline assult unit. What they should have done: Copy/paste the stats of the Tyrant Guard but give it an Acid Flamer = kickass hard to kill shock unit that takes down hordes with template weapon and scythes through heavy infantry with acid maw goodness.

(18.) Ymgarl Genestealers 4 - A little expensive but extra armour and fairly good deployment rules means I often use them.

(19.) Tyranid Warriors 2 - Nerfed guns crippled their ability to provide mid-range fire support. T4 means upgrading them to hit hard is very painful against ID. Upgraded they hit hard but are simply very fragile given their points cost.

(20.) Genestealers 4 - really should have got an extra attack to compensate for effectively having no armour. The broodlord's ability to castrate enemy models is a tad OP IMHO.

(21.) Mycetic Spore 1 - Never used. Expensive, stupidly low toughness for something that survive orbital re-entry. See Marine vehicles for things that actually get extra rules for this. Dumb targetting rules make upgrading it a liability to your army!

(22.) Termagaunts 3 - STill die by the bucket load to NR! stupidity but I don't feel they play any worse or better.

(23.) Hormagaunts 2 - Slow. WS3 hurts them defensively. I cannot see why these changes were felt necessary.

(24.) Ripper Swarm without Tunneling 1 - Die very easily but give nothing in return.

(25.) Ripper Swarm with Tunneling 1 - See 24.

(26.) Tyranid Shrikes 1 See 24.

(27.) Raveners 4 - Excellent board crossing speed. Although fragile they hit hard enough to be worth it. However, ID is their bane.

(28.) Sky-slasher Swarm 2 - Keifer.

(29.) Gargoyles 5 - The best gaunts. Excellent screening. A gun. Okay in HTH for a gaunt.

(30.) Harpy - Never played it so a 3. On paper possibly a good flanker.

(31.) Spore Mines I don't bother dropping them. I prefer a Biovore brood.

(32.) Carnifex 1 - Nidzilla could have been fixed by simply removing Elite Fexes. Increasing their cost and removing the ability to upgrade their I and WS values plus removing the gunfex option (while nerfing Stranglers)....why? There is no point to it now. Why not give it Fleet to represent its apparently unstoppable charge?

(33.) Old One Eye 1 - Too many points for what it gives.

(34.) Biovore 4 - if you face infantry this thing can put big holes in their units. Reasonable points costs.

(35.) Trygon 5 - Zombies don't like this choice as it has no juicy brains for them to eat. It urinates fulsomely over the carnifex.

(36.) Trygon Prime 5 - Like a Trygon but fire twice as many shots, 50% further on the turn it arrives. Also brings Synapse, higher Ld.

(37.) Mawloc 4 - A great bunker buster and contester. The only downside is that you have to use one of your Trygon Slots to take it.

(38.) Tyrannofex 3 - Why doesn't it come with the gun for that many points?

(39.) FAQ 2 - Those uppity Nid players are causing trouble. Make them suffer. Broke things that are apparently fine in other dexes. Fixed things that were 'common sense.'

(40.) Overall 2 - Wince inducing fluff. Dependance on new certain models. Irrational slot reorgnasation. Dumb copy/pasting of statlines. Overall the codex feels like it was written by somebody who doesn't play Nids. Codexes should be written by people who love the army but can be fair and neutral. If they didn't love Nids...then at least their professionalism should have meant they tried their best.

(1.) The Background Information and Introduction, or “Fluff”
2, although it should be noted I'm rather picky on the subject.

(2.) The individual description/entries for the various Tyranid Broods and Special Characters
3, I would've picked 4, but a few truly horrendous ones are keeping it down.

(3.) The implementation of Tyranid’s Universal Special Rules (Synapse, Shadow in the Warp and Instinctive Behavior)
4

(4.) The rules for the weapons, upgrades and armour save values for the Tyranid army models in general (can also compare to 4th or previous Editions)
3, the rules make sense, but it always feels like there's a lot of overlap and a number of counters seem to be missing.

**I'm skipping the unit specific stuff since I have little to no experience of actually seeing the codex in action**

(39.) How would you rate the support given from the Tyranids FAQ, in terms of completeness of questions/queries answered?
4

(40.) What score would you give the Codex overall, taking into account the quality of previous editions of the Tyranid Codex?
2.5, 2 if halves aren't allowed, mostly due to the first point (which I consider to be absolutely vital).

(1.) The Background Information and Introduction, or “Fluff”
2 - Terrible fluff. It was just not fun to read through, and the characters are very meh.
(2.) The individual description/entries for the various Tyranid Broods and Special Characters
3 - Good description though.
(3.) The implementation of Tyranid’s Universal Special Rules (Synapse, Shadow in the Warp and Instinctive Behavior)
3 - Synapse got slightly different, instinctive behaviour got better but Shadow in the Warp is a joke.
(4.) The rules for the weapons, upgrades and armour save values for the Tyranid army models in general (can also compare to 4th or previous Editions)
2 - Most things were lost, all stuff was changed, lot of things got worse (Venom Cannon, Fleshborer, Spinefists).
(5.) The Hive Tyrant
3
(6.) Tyrant Guard
3
(7.) The Swarmlord
4
(8.) The Tervigon
5 - No brainer. Good psychic powers, "free" troops and making those troops better. And it's cheap compared to all the other monstrous creatures. It's a shame the Tyrant couldn't be as awesome as this.
(9.) The Tyranid Prime
5
(10.) The Parasite of Mortrex
2
(11.) The Hive Guard
5 - Another no brainer.
(12.) The Lictor
1 - It got worse this time around and it lacks a real meaning on the battlefield.
(13.) The Deathleaper
4
(14.) The Venomthroape
3
(15.) The Zoanthroape
4
(16.) The Doom of Malan’Tai
2
(17.) The Pyrovore
1
(18.) The Ymgarl Genestealers
3
(19.) The Tyranid Warriors
3 - Despite what people said, they haven't gotten much better than last time. They're still expensive, and I could give them stats that are like the new ones on the 4th ed. Warriors, while having better shooting weapons and eternal warrior (instead of 3 wounds). The best thing that happened was them moving to Troops but they are still subpar imo.
(20.) The Genestealers
3 - They went from 5 to 3. They got cheaper, true but they lost grenades. Mine just don't work anymore, only on rare occasions when I don't assault into cover or I have stunned the enemy with Barbed Stranglers or the likes.
(21.) The Mycetic Spore
3
(22.) The Termagaunts
4 - Only a 4 if you use a Tervigon. Otherwise I'd say 2,5. They really aren't very good. Unless you take Devourers too.
(23.) The Hormagaunts
4
(24.) The Ripper Swarm (without tunneling)
1
(25.) The Ripper Swarm (with tunneling)
1
(26.) The Tyranid Shrikes
2
(27.) The Raveners
3
(28.) The Sky-slasher Swarms
1
(29.) The Gargoyles
5 - As cheap as Hormagaunts, faster, have shooting and is still good in close combat.
(30.) The Harpy
2
(31.) The Spore Mine (including Clusters and those from Biovores)
1
(32.) The Carnifex

(12.) The Lictor
1 - Incoherent rules which do not work well together (bonus to reserves & deepstrike scatter reduction for a unit that won't be able to grant it until turn 3 at best due to it's own need to come in first at which point it's usually worthless)

A Hive Tyrant with Hive Commander helps with that issue a bit. I usually get my Lictors in on turn two (They come in on a 3+), and then everything Auto DS's around the Lictors in turn 3.

yeah same. i've even been able to use the trygon's tunnel quite a bit recently. they're actually quite handy, these so called redundant rules

Still not a very good combination because you can not choose to delay reserves. If a Tyrant or Swarmlord, or both, are adding either +1 or +2 total to reserve rolls to get your Lictor in, they are adding it to everything else to. You can't apply the reserve roll bonus to the Lictor and nothing else in the hopes of delaying them until it's on the board, so most of the time the Lictor doesn't arrive in time to work for anything else. And, if you don't use either of the Tyrant/Swarmlord abilities to bump up the reserve roll, the Lictor is as unreliable as anything else coming on in a timely manner.

Trygon tunnels suffer from the same problem really, especially since you can't assign squads to come in by them once they are open to have to delay on the Trygon's entrance.

It is just a very poorly written set of rules for the unit in that regard, not impossible to use but more improbable than not, and thus too unreliable.

uuuuhhh....

the downsides are very obvious, and well discussed, beaten, hog-tied, kicked and revived to rinse and repeat ad infinitium.

me, and i'm assuming Alpharius, are aware of these downsides. but you consider them and don't build a game plan relying on these rules working. when they do, they add an option for me to use. if they don't its no skin off my nose.

i'll stop here before i derail this thread further.

(1.) Background 4 (return of some 1st and 2nd ed stuff makes up for less engaging writing)
(2.) Descriptions 4 (on average)
(3.) Universal Special Rules 4
(4.) Weapons, Upgrades and Armour 1 [and 4] (New stuff is cool and gets a 4, loss of many upgrades on the dratted sprues was terrible as was loss of assault grenades equivalent upgrades for all assault-oriented units! That gets it a 1.)

(24.) Ripper Swarm without Tunneling 3
(24.5) Ripper swarm fluff -10000000000 (how can they eat all a planets foliage if they die outside synapse? makes no sense! They should lose the wounds from rippers doing their instinctive job, eating some food and leaving the swarm for the nearest digestion pool!)

Also we could do with some miniature release support with a proper good Tervigon model and an upgrade sprue including wings, boneswords, prime-parts etc)
(40.) Overall 4 (but only just, and only after ages getting over the loss of assulting through cover and loss of power weapons for the broodlord)

Thank you everyone so far for all the responses, include replies from other forums (which will remain unnamed) I have 50+ responses. Hopefully, if we reach 100+ responses, the sample size will be 'large' enough to be statistically significant.

In case anyone is wondering what this data can be used for, it should be very useful in determining what was done "right/well" about this Codex and what was "wrong/weak". Everyone following the threads can already see some obvious patterns, while there does seem to be a spread of results for some of the other items.

Hopefully, if a good argument and proposal can be put forth, Games Workshop will do something about the Codex. For me, a successful Codex should be scoring mainly 4s and 5s.

Let's keep the data streaming in, cheers!

Overall: Does it's job, just. Too many odd point costs, stat lines and rules that don't gel. Seems like a first draft of the book that wasn't playtested well, having been rushed out to piggyback off space hulk sales. A clean up job could make this a very good book with lots of fun choices that compete for inclusion. Even as a very causal gamer, there is quite a bit of stuff that I'd avoid if I had other choices available.
FAQ: Just bizarre. Cleans a few grey areas, then becomes inconsistent across other codexs and finally a question that didn't need asking (because the answer is in black and white very clearly worded in the main rule book) gets ruled opposite to the rulebook with no explanation at all.

(1.) Background 3 Mostly good, but some derpyness

(40.) Overall 3

There's some cool stuff here, This book got me to start a Tyranid army, but at the same time, there's some very bad costing/unit design (60pts for HT wings? WTF Pyrovore? How much for a Carnifex?) and some capabilities are simply crowded into to few FoC slots (AT).

It's an awkward army that requires a lot more finesse than it should. Synapse functions as a limiter when no limiter is needed, rather than an enhancer which is what it really should be.

The whole thing feels very rushed, like it was put together in a panic in the wake of the Space Hulk release to ensure that there was an appropriate Adversary release in time for the Blood Angels...circus. There's no models for critical new units, and very poor internal balance, along with awkward external competitiveness. While Nids can be somewhat competitive, they seem way more restricted than any of the other 5E books in what they can take, and certainly aren't on the level of any of the other 5E books.

EDIT: and the FAQ was a poorly thought out, last minute disaster.

4 (a lot of more new stuff)

So many units require synergy i'm going to have to give double rating with some as certain combinations change them so much.

(1.) The Background Information and Introduction, or “Fluff”
3 - Some good some bad

(2.) The individual description/entries for the various Tyranid Broods and Special Characters
4 - Nice artwork and descriptions though counter productive in places, really the 1-3 Lictors with lone hunter fluff type stuff.

(3.) The implementation of Tyranid’s Universal Special Rules (Synapse, Shadow in the Warp and Instinctive Behavior)
2 - Synapse is nice, IB is a fun rule that gives them uniqueness but SitW gets massive fluff power and turns into a naff range runes of warding that can't pierce a thin layer of metal...

(4.) The rules for the weapons, upgrades and armour save values for the Tyranid army models in general (can also compare to 4th or previous Editions)
2 - Weapons are good, even if I dont see why the Heavy Venom can't be a half decent AT gun but robbing most MC's of at least the option for a 2+ save made them feel much flimsier, doubly so given their cost increases.

(5.) The Hive Tyrant
4 - Pricey but great, reliance on Guard robs him of a 5

(6.) Tyrant Guard
3 - Pricey but necessary, at their cost should have had 3 wounds

(7.) The Swarmlord
3 - Very pricey and unmutable, but i hate specials so i'm biased.

(8.) The Tervigon
4 - Great unit, the buffs it brings to gaunts are amazing, robbed of 5 by it's psi powers being shooting attacks so it can't buff and shoot.

(9.) The Tyranid Prime
4 - The low points HQ, great value.

(10.) The Parasite of Mortrex
4 - Great mid cost HQ, struggles against MEQ's but a light infantry nightmare.

(11.) The Hive Guard
5 - Born to sell

(12.) The Lictor
2 - I use them out of love, but they really borked the special rules on this one.

(13.) The Deathleaper
2 - A super pricier version of regular Lictors, wooo.

(14.) The Venomthroape
3 - Handy, but born into the wrong FOC slot and loses out.

(15.) The Zoanthroape
4 - Should be Heavy, one of the dex's only decent AT guns and stuck in the hyper competative elites section.

(16.) The Doom of Malan’Tai
2 - Special Pfist fodder, useless in a mech driven world.

(17.) The Pyrovore
3 - Overpriced but with number of wounds caused not swounds on profile causing acid blood hits can make a decent charge deterant.

(18.) The Ymgarl Genestealers
5 - Awesome unit, everything a Lictor should have been

(19.) The Tyranid Warriors
3 - Some great options, powerful attacks but always has the shadow of battlecannon style death haning over them.

(20.) The Genestealers
4 - Cheaper and still awesome, 5+ locked save is only thing stopping them going 5.

(21.) The Mycetic Spore
2 - Fun but guns aren't really an option due to targetting constraints and hiting your own troops.

(22.) The Termagaunts
2/5 - Bare bones 2, compare them flat out to any basic infantry and they suck, using overlapping buffs at the heart of a swarm they can drop a charging unit of Grey Hunters and go 5.

(23.) The Hormagaunts
2 - WS3 murdered them, I used to run WS5 mutants but now they are too flimsy against anthing that might fight back.

(24.) The Ripper Swarm (without tunneling)
2 - Poor unit badly overpriced, not bad free from the Parasite though.

(25.) The Ripper Swarm (with tunneling)
2 - See above.

(26.) The Tyranid Shrikes
3 - Nice but poor save and same S8 vulnerability make me worried.

(27.) The Raveners
4 - Cavalry charge range makes them great harassers, Gargoyles fight with them for dominance.

(28.) The Sky-slasher Swarms
1 - more expensive rippers? Win!

(29.) The Gargoyles
4 - Cheap, fast, handy.

(30.) The Harpy
2 - Way to fragile to have MC cost.

(31.) The Spore Mine (including Clusters and those from Biovores)
2 - Fun but meh, biovore shots are better but still...

(32.) The Carnifex
3 - Way too high price, WS3 again is murder but attack buff was nice, good weapon options though.

(33.) The Old One Eye
1 - Overpriced, fat, special, non mutable carni with redundant rules

(34.) The Biovore
4 - Horde killer extrondinaire, bit fragile but cheap.

(35.) The Trygon
5 - Born to sell, born to kill fex sales.

(36.) The Trygon Prime
5 - Better than above, so 6?

(37.) The Mawloc
4 - Handy but lacks too much punch on table to make up loss compared to Trygon.

(38.) The Tyrannofex
3 - Rupture variant is meh, Acid Spray variant is a horde killing template spammer, very pricey though.

(39.) How would you rate the support given from the Tyranids FAQ, in terms of completeness of questions/queries answered?
2 - Some very wierd decisions that seem to have been made without though or consideration for precident, did at least shut up the people trying to nerf the Mawloc in spite of what common sense said...

(40.) What score would you give the Codex overall, taking into account the quality of previous editions of the Tyranid Codex?
3 - It's playable, fun but suffers from metagame weakness some odd design ideas (WS3, 3+ MC's...) and poor internal balance. Not their best work and not a patch on previous dexes for mutability and options.

(12.) The Lictor
2 - I use them out of love, but they really borked the special rules on this one.

Lictors are my fav 'nid monster, but they suck so bad its un-real. Should be a CC monster, now better at hunting tanks??:wtf:??

(1.) Background 3 - Decently written, but didn't like new units shoe-horned into old fluff. The tyranids EVOLVE - why couldn't new units just be evolutions?

(2.) Descriptions 4
(3.) Universal Special Rules 2 - synapse and IB combine to be a limiting factor, where the drawbacks outway the bonuses. Most new armies get special rules that enhance them, not limit them the way these do.

(4.) Weapons, Upgrades and Armour 3
(5.) Hive Tyrant 5
(6.) Tyrant Guard 4
(7.) Swarmlord 4
(8.) Tervigon 3 - purely for effect, not likeability. Nid's already have a 'transport/brood generator' - The malefactor. Why not use that?

(9.) Tyranid Prime 4
(10.) Parasite of Mortrex 3
(11.) Hive Guard 5

It's an ok codex amid the 'great' codexes out there. I'd say the only other codex released since Orks to be even close to as poorly put together might be deamons. Doesn't mean you can't build a fun, playable army, competative even. But it's not as well worked out as the other newer releases, and I'd maintain that two players of equal ability and dice luck, one with nids and one with any other 5th ed codex, nids would loose.

while not a tyranid player, and therefore not going to fill out this survey, i do wanna make sure i'm clear on the scoring criteria, specifically concerning units.

if 3 is suppose to be average, the would that no imply that a "perfect" codex in terms of internal and external balance would score 3 for each unit? Ideally with few 4s or 5s?

If 3 is the average does that mean 4s and 5s represent overpowered or poorly ballanced internally?

NixonAsADaemonPrince
10-02-2011, 11:46
I would think it would be more along the lines of wanting to score lots of 4s, as those would represent units which are definitely worth fielding without being a "no brainer" choice, which would be 5s. 3s represent simply average choices, which are overshadowed by 4s. To give you a comparison, I would say that the DE codex scores mostly 4s.

The Marshel

fair point.

Paedan
10-02-2011, 12:44
Yes, I would agree that a 'good' Codex should be mostly 4s, but if it was all 'just 4s' then there wouldn't be anything that stands out (you can think of this as a pro or a con).

Right now there are a few obvious 5s (from most entries), such as the Hive Guard, but there are too many 3s, 2s and 1s. I'll start to analyze the data when we hit 100+ responses (total across all the different forums).

Thanks again everyone.
