The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2010-2011 Month 7

Hello all,

This is the thread for the work you have done in March and after a week (to give folks time to post their work) it becomes the thread to post your comments on others work and discuss what you are painting in April.

Lots of folks dropping out.

The difference between people that fail and people that succeed in life is quite often that those who succeed were determined to do so ....
... and refuse to quit.

Well done to all of you still in this.

All the very best,

The story so far:

640x480 seems to work best OR use thumbnails
Bigger than this results in the scroll bar of doom for many.

What is it all about?

The aim of The Tale of Painters (TOP) is to help motivate those involved to start and complete an army in the next twelve months.

We made a decision early on to split the Tale into two separate 'halves' one for 40K and one for Fantasy. (Just because of the numbers of people involved) They have continued to evolve in slightly different ways but this is how the Fantasy Tale works.

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months. Starting with their first post on the last day of September 2010 and finishing with their last post on the last day of August 2011. So we have this month, whilst everyone signs up, to collect, build, convert, undercoat and otherwise get yourself ready to go with the first work in progress starting in September.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

At the end of each month a new thread will appear for the painters to post your previous months painting and the rest of the painters to offer words of encouragement.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.
(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end ... it's harder than you think!)

Men and Boys

Because this is harder than you would think ... As last year rather than try and hold everyone to 200 points a month I have decided to allow folks to join in and paint only 100 points a month. Whilst the goal for many remains getting a 2000 point army painted in a year the original and ongoing intention of this whole thing was to encourage and support folks to get stuff painted and 1000 points is better than no points! As a result we have two catagories. 'Men' (painting 200 points/month) and 'Boys' (painting 100 points/month).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : No you are not too late. Yes you can still join in. Just post on this thread saying which army and how many points you intend to paint.

Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes (we are not here to tell you how and when to paint your stuff, it is great to get ahead) BUT we would like you only to post 200 points (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 200 points a month (200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc.) so as not to depress the hell out of those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example oif you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. We love background stuff. Write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

Q : Can Doi sign out?
A : No he can't.

Hordes of Khorne

18 Warriors of Khorne with Command Group

Highs : Finally finishing a core unit! Actually these guys were a blast to paint!
Another high : Finishing a bunch of movement trays and finally making an army shot.
Lows: Not sure about the red highlights... but at least they look better now than they did with just a basecoat + wash.
Another low: Not commenting on everyone's work last month, but I'll make up for it this month!!

18 x 17 + 30 + 30 = 366 pts!

TOTAL POINTS: 1052 + 366 = 1418 pts. Back on track baby, yeah!!

PLANNED FOR THIS MONTH: A little something of the WoC list that amounts to 205 pts...

And the army shot:

Dice Roll : 4

02-04-2011, 09:29
Dice Roll: 2
Army:1k High Elves (Boys)
Unit: 12 Swordmasters
Build/Conversion: Straight out of the Island of Blood. The duplicate standard bearer I scratch build a pretty shoddy sword, but you don't notice it too much from afar I think.
Still to do: I need to finish another 6 of these guys including command. Just got gold/gems on them, plus hair on everyone.
Highs and Lows: Swordmasters are good to paint. Fairly easy, which is really nice! Lots of points also, so doubly nice!
Points: 180
Total Points: 730
Next Month: Finish the front rank of Swordmasters. Then get into the Spearmen for the last leg to the finish line.

02-04-2011, 09:34
Dice Roll:2
Army: 2k Beastmen (Mens)
Unit: Taurox the Brass Bull
Build/Conversion: This is a regular Minotaur, combined with the old Doombull head and arms. The horns have been chopped off a bit and replaced with blades. Greenstuffed a little to get the arms in position, as well as the helmet on his head.
Still to do: Finish painting him of course! The brass is done, so I've got all the details left now. Have to decide whether I want the nails/horns/teeth to be bone or brass still though... decisions.
Highs and Lows: Well, he's actually been sitting around for quite some time now. I had done about half the brass as well, so didn't actually get that much done this month on him. But a lot has gone in March, so I guess it's to be expected.
Points: 167.5
Total Points: 1177.5
Next Month: Finish off Taurox of course. I'd like to finish some Ungor Raiders that have been half complete since I started the army as well!

02-04-2011, 09:41
Dice Roll: 2
Army: 1k Beastmen (Boys)
Unit: Bray Shaman
Build/Conversion: Straight out of the blister Bray Shaman.
Still to do: Got a few little tidbits left on him, notably the rope and some bandaging still.
Highs and Lows: Relatively easy to paint is nice. It took me until the last day of the month though to finish off the bones/teeth/metal/wood though.
Points: 162
Total Points: 822
Next Month: I've got a bunch of Additional Hand Weapon Gors that are in various stages of completeness. Should probably finish them off, and finish off the boys points!

Also, here is my army from a 1750 point tournament I took them to. Once you throw in my Wargor with Great Weapon, gets them to 2k points. So if anything, I've got an army painted. Included in this picture is the AHW Gors for next month.

Good friend of mine died, have not had time to catch up. So ... Joker me.

02-04-2011, 18:56
Dice Roll:4

Army: Dwarfs (Mens)

Unit: 11 more quarrellers, a sniper cannon, and some artillary crew

Build/Conversion: I flipped the cannon over and added a sniper scope to represent different runes.

Still to do: I think they're mostly done, high table-top/good nuff'

Highs and Lows:I am so sick of painting quarrellers I could spit. I like the models, but enough is enough! After painting almost 50, I'm going to reward myself by painting some characters and converting some hammerers!!! The fun stuff.

Points: 268
Total Points:1575!!
Next Month:Characters!!!! My BSB and Anvil/keg of doom!

11 Qurrellers with GWs

My runed up sniper cannon, because you can't dispel a cannon ball.

The full army shot!!! I'm pretty happy with how this is coming together.:D

Sneek peek of what's in store for next month.....
Bugman himself, and his traveling party keg of dooooooom!!!!!!!!!

02-04-2011, 19:02
Dice Roll: 5
Army: Goblins (men)

Unit: Norm, aka Stormin' Norman aka a giant

Build/Conversion: No conversion, but he's the previous model of a giant.

Still to do: Nothing specific, but I keep noticing bits which I've missed/not finished, so I guess that may well occur again. Also the base is waiting for me to do a basing session, once I've got enough models to warrant it.

Highs: Nice to get a big model painted.

Lows: Norm was only painted because I wouldn't have got my planned units done in time, so it's kind of a failure, but he would have to have been painted sometime or other.

Points: 200

Total Points: 1529 (NOTE: this is adjusted to the new army book, so probably doesn't match up to previous months)

Stormin' Norman

The army so far (minus the doom diver because it seems to have vanished somewhere!!!)

Next Month: My plan at the moment is for 10 wolf riders, a chariot, and a giant squig big boss. Whether that actually happens or not is a different kettle of fish.

EDIT: I've shrunk the photos down to the right size, but they seem to be humungous on here. Doesn't seem to be much I can do about it though, as I say, I've shrunk them down, they're just being argumentative.

ReEDIT: wooo, they've gone the right size! Sometimes all it takes is a few gentle words.... and a load of pummelling with fists and blunt instruments...

02-04-2011, 19:15
Dawi : 2000 POINTS (MEN)

UNIT: Dwarf Lord (The old Lord Ungrim)

BUILD/CONVERSION: No conversion, just stock model.

PAINTING: For the metal, chainmail, with a badab black wash then a chainmail drybrush, Tallern flesh with a ogryn flesh wash and a dwarf flesh drybrush. Enchanted blue with a ice blue highlight on the axes handle. For the dragon cloak, orkhide shade, drybrushed with dark angels green then snot green then goblin green to finish.

BASING: The same as the rest of the Dawi, although theres not much base to play with admittedly.

STILL TO DO: Nothing. Well except for the beard ties in his plaits, I'm not sure how I missed those.

HIGHS AND LOWS: I know I say this every month, but I love the old Dwarfs….so much character.

Ungrim Front:

Ungrim Back:

Army so far:

Next month: I’ll do some more warriors to top up the unit I did in the last tale.

02-04-2011, 19:15
mods, please dispose of this farce of a post. The internet is crumbling around me...

02-04-2011, 19:16
Lizardmen : 1000 POINTS (Boys)

UNIT: Salamander Hunting Pack

BUILD/CONVERSION: No conversion at all.

PAINTING: Green skin same as the rest of my Skinks, For the Sallie I did a dehneb stone basecoat, with a bleached bone drybrush then a skull white drybrush. Although I’m thinking of painting it’s “sail”a contrasting colour.

BASING: Sand. Black basecoat, then a very heavy vermin brown drybrush.

STILL TO DO: Just need to finish the basing.

HIGHS AND LOWS: No lows, now I just have to buy more. As I’m probably the only Lizardmen player in the world with only one pack!

Hunting Pack:

Army so far:

Next month: Something big, big and very angry.

03-04-2011, 09:59
Once again I am in excellent company!

BACKGROUND/THEME: Marienburger Greatswords - 130 points including musician, standard bearer and champion.

BUILD/CONVERSION: No conversionwork
PAINTING:The painting wasn't too bad, but it took me a while to get the hang of it. Basically everything was basecoated Dark Flesh, which worked well. The blue things were painted Ice Blue and then washed with a watered down Regal Blue. Pretty happy with that.

BASING: Simple.

STILL TO DO: Nothing on these 10.

HIGHS AND LOWS: High - It is finished and I am satisfied with the colours.
Low - It took me two months to do it.

TOTAL POINTS: 689 if I am not mistaken.

Oh, and I want everyone's honest opinion. A good friend of mine whose opinion I hold dear wasn't very impressed with it. She is no Warhammer painter but an excellent artist in the drawing department, and she said NEVER to use Red, Yellow and Blue all in one. Whilst I understand her point (I too dabble in art and know a thing or two about colours), I do not view this particular choice of colours to be wrong, and that is even without considering the fact that they ARE Marienburg colours.

What do you guys think? And remember, HONEST! If I need to do away with the blue in favour of something else it won't be difficult to do, as it's only my off-colour.

03-04-2011, 11:28

That's a Joker for my High Elves, although I think I have enough points to tide me over.
I'll try to get some Ogres up before the end of the first week of the month. Currently having some troubles.

03-04-2011, 22:13
Sadly, I'm going to have to bow out. I'm heading off to basic training at the end of the month, so I'm spending the rest of my time with family and friends and finishing portfolios for class. Good luck to everyone who's still in!

What I was intending on working on...

03-04-2011, 22:19
Hello there everyone!

So i managed to finish my warriors at last...

UNIT: Warriors of Slaanesh

BACKGROUND/THEME: Well, old minis i begun sometime around 2002 for my then all Slaanesh HoC army. It was time to finish them! But this time in a mixed army.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Old plastic warriors mixed with old Daemonettes 4th or 5th?

PAINTING: Based them Lich Purple then inked them with Purple Ink. Then highlighted with pinks and purple and gold for metal. Inked with more purple ink, blue wash and on the metal watered down warlock purple and Hawk Turqouise. Mithril silver on metal edges. Skin is Turqouise highlighted with grey, purple, light blue, white in random order then inked.

I love ink.

BASING: Sand with static grass, nothing fancysmanshy.

STILL TO DO: Nothing.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Highs was the inking and then put the final highlights after to see it all come together and pop like nothing else. Lows was all the details and especially the studs and nails and spikes! Each mini was like a character in it self to paint. Took time but in the end it was worth it i think..

POINTS THIS MONTH: 17 Warriors of slaanesh+ Exhalted (Flaming Banner and Exhalted have various stuff on him) 312+169p=481p

Next coming up is the lengthy work on my marauders. I got one unit of 50 to paint. Awesome! Will perhaps take more than one month i think.... :O

Also i have to take a brake from paitning WoC to finish my rivertrolls for a tournament in late May.

Time will tell what happens!

I will include more pics of the warriors in my thread to show the madness in that unit!

04-04-2011, 07:04
I'll be laying down dual jokers this month (Ogres and Gobbos). I've got two multi-month entries in the works but they're still in the assembly/conversion stage. I ran out of time this month as getting my fish research project up and running has been taking up most of my free time.

04-04-2011, 08:32
I'm afraid I'm dropping out guys, my Empire army has grabbed my full hobby attention right now, leading to a loss of interest in finishing up my DE. Maybe it might be possible to buy my way back in if i paint enough in a month or two time, but i don't see it

So long guys, and good luck to those sticking with it

04-04-2011, 16:48
I've been incredibly lazy this past month and not picked up my brush :shifty:

My previous months effort put me 200 points ahead so i'm going to enjoy the luxury of not posting anything this month...

see you all in May with (hopefully) some knights

04-04-2011, 17:33
Army: Ogre Kingdoms 1

UNIT: 1 Bruiser BSB & 1 Butcher

STILL TO DO: Add some grass.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Once again, surprisingly difficult.

POINTS : 285 (total: 1540)

05-04-2011, 01:11

A little short on points, but I think I'm ahead anyway. Treb and some peggies on the the block next. Sorry for the quality of the photo, but I figured better to get something up than not.

UNIT: 2 Knights of the Realm

BACKGROUND/THEME: Nothing really emerging yet. This will be the core of an army, so, flexible.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight stock

PAINTING: Mix of GW, PP, and Delta Ceramcoat paints. Not sold on the foundation orange - kept coming out dirty, and the colour desaturated quickly.

BASING: Sand, paint, drybrush.

STILL TO DO: Finish basing

HIGHS AND LOWS: High was getting them done, tbh. This month was crazy, but at least I knocked out a couple knights. Also, finished up the core knight block for the army.

POINTS THIS MONTH: 48. Like I said, a little short, but I'm ahead, so I'll forgive myself ;)

TOTAL POINTS: Should be up to 738.

05-04-2011, 03:05

Sorry guys, while waiting for the new army book to be released, I felt so laaaaaazy I didn't put a single lick of paint on any TK model... :cries:

05-04-2011, 12:30
Joker this month. Been a rough few months with work/kids but back on track.... Lots of beasts coming next month to start buying back the jokers

05-04-2011, 16:49
Army: Ogre Kingdoms 2

UNIT: 1 Slave Giant

STILL TO DO: Some detail work on his club. Grass for the base.

HIGHS AND LOWS: A lot more detail than his brother, which means I had to spent more time on him than expected.

POINTS : 175 (total: 1440)

Chicken Pig
05-04-2011, 17:40
Army: Warriors of Chaos

UNIT: 20 Marauders and full command, 2 Spawn, Exalted Hero.

STILL TO DO: Nothing.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Have finally finished painting the WOC battallion that I bought eons ago. Have also done a bit of extra painting as I move house in the next month so painting time will be at a premium.

POINTS : 364 (total: 1394pts)

05-04-2011, 18:21
UPDATE - back at work, snowed under with lots going on, new baby being demanding and moving house in 3 weeks.

Still haven't posted my Feb models, but pictures on my PC, which is boxed up, although there should be some in my Mantic thread (150 Zombies and 20 Skeletons in a month), and haven't done much on the Ogres.

Still, should come back swinging hopefully by mid May, my Ogres might be slightly behind, but my VC's are definately well ahed of the game.

Ah, photobucket -

30 Zombies - 120 points

60 Zombies - 240 points

another 60 Zombies - 240 points

120/150 as a Horde

20 Skeletons with HW&S - 160 points

20 Skeletons with Spear & Shield - 180 points

So, all in, 940 points for February....

05-04-2011, 18:44
Well folks, seeing the Khemri black box minis may have sealed the deal. I really am driven to put the Empire aside temporarily and work on the Khemri releases as I finish up Dwarfs and build scenery.

In fact, I am petitioning no less than 3 local stores for black box favors. One store is a lock, but I have to pay to keep those minis instead of getting them free from GW.

Will be posting Dwarf updates very soon (Thane and Engineer) and hopefully a huge pile of Khemri as well to make up for the Empire.

New Entrant to the Tale. Boys. 1000 pts of skaven

I was away Sept.- Dec., and have just gotten reorganized enough to begin painting again. I wasn’t going to join as I’m building a skaven army and was put off by the numbers involved. But then I decided to sacrifice some quality and found a speed painting method that gave me table top results in a timeframe I could make work. Prime black, spray scorched brown, overbrush, wash with devlan mud and dot the eyes yellow (not red since I’m a little colorblind and red doesn’t pop for me the way yellow does).

Army: Skaven

Unit: 20 clanrats with full command and shields

Background/Theme: ratty rats

Still to do: Some flock on the bases that looks like dead shrubs and twigs (suggestions welcome) and fix a couple of blotchy eyes (always happens on one of the front row.

Highs and Lows: It went fast but one shouldn’t look too close

Points: 110 and counting

Next up: more clanrats and a warpfire team for this unit

06-04-2011, 11:52
Purplebeard reporting for updates!

ARMY : Dwaves: 2000 Points (MEN)

UNIT: 12 Shieldmaidens.

BACKGROUND/THEME: A Hold of Dwarves living in the far north of the world, in a region under the terrible influence of Chaos. Led by the ancient and dwindling Purplebeard family, they are more-or-less cut off from the rest of civilization, and struggling to survive.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Asgard figures from the 1980s. No conversions.

STILL TO DO: Highlighting the chainmail, one black wash, and varnish.

HIGHS & LOWS: High - finally getting a unit to a competent size!

TOTAL POINTS SO FAR : 1118 + 168 = 1286.

DICE ROLL : Er, probably not relevant anymore - the mighty throng has wilted to a small band of brethren. I'll just comment on everyone this month.

Shieldmaidens - unit shot - now 27 figures!

In related bad news, some more figures arrived for the Shieldmaiden unit (Reaper minis) - but they were, sadly, colossal. I will have to go elsewhere for figures to finish the unit - perhaps for some Tale of War miniatures. I've also managed to get the guys from last month based up now.

Warriors from last month.

I've also got a Gyrocopter part-done and some more footsloggers. These guys are going to be 18 Rangers in the list, but their real purpose is to buff an existing (pre-tale) unit of Bugman's Rangers up to 40.

Gyrocopter and 18 Rangers.

Finally, an shot of the army so far:

Army shot.

So, overall, it is coming along fairly well. However, my Finals are coming up, so my focus is required elsewhere for the next 6 weeks or so.

@gaarew: 940 pts is a mighty contribution for one month sir.

06-04-2011, 14:50
A bit late this month as it's been hectic - end of term at uni therefore lots of work needed doing... and now I have exams :(

Unit: Finishing off the Seaguard (10 inc. unit filler)

Points: 130 (although the 10th guy isnt painted yet)

Here's the stuff I managed to do:

Here's a close up of the unit filler - 40mm scenic resin base for like two quid off ebay plus an old metal mage model:

And here's the unit as a whole, minus the last guy who still isn't done yet:

Overall, whilst these are nice sculpts, they're a paint to paint due to all the different little bits (very precise description there), and because both my Khemri brown and Mechite red are going off... glad they're out of the way.

Army - Ogre Kingdoms

Units - Tyrant and Gorger

Points - Gorger = 75
Tyrant = 200
Iron Fist = 12
Heavy Armour = 6
Skull Smasher (plucker!) = 30
Greyback Pelt = 35
Total = 358 pts

Points so far = 1219 pts

Highs/Lows - conversion/sculpting/kitbashing is always a lot of fun, the Tyrant assembly has been a work in progress for most of the tale, but the Gorger (werewolf!) has only been put together very recently (clawed fiend model has only just been released lol).

No Lows this time, but just let me underline that this post is a work in progress post, as I plan to spend 2 full months painting the Tyrant, and the Gorger is just padding the points out to something nearer 400, to make a full 2 month's work.

ARMY: Empire, 1000 Points (Boys)

UNIT: 12 Swordsmen (including champ and musician), 1 greatsword

BUILD/CONVERSION: slightly converted champion (weapon swap), otherwise straight out of the box

PAINTING: As previous.

BASING: Scorched brown/Snakebite leather/Bleached bone, static grass

STILL TO DO: Nothing... except paint more state troops...

HIGHS AND LOWS: THe greatsword was an absolut blas to paint - sharp details, yet not as cluttered as the state troops. Looking forward to do more of these!

Lows would be the swordsmen. Nice minis (I belong to those who actually prefer these to the previous kit), but too detailed for standard rank and file. Simply takes too much time to paint.

Oh, and looking at my total points - not much to be happy about... two jokers allready, and still I'm way behind... In the boys league ...

07-04-2011, 09:03
Good job those of you who are still at it.

I'm afraid I'll have to drop out. Two Jokers played already and not enough painted. My Empire will still see some reinforcements in the future but they will appear in my blog elsewhere on Warseer.

Good luck to all of you.

07-04-2011, 18:05
I had these all done before the end of last month, but forgot to post until now.

ARMY: Empire: 2000 Points (MEN)

UNIT: Oswald Kunze, Warrior Priest of Ulric

BACKGROUND/THEME: Oswald Kunze is a bit of a mystery among the Priests of Ulric. A dozen or so years ago he was found performing last rights in a village north of Middenhiem that had been raided by Chaos bandits. He will not speak of his life before then, but quickly proved his devotion to Ulric and Middenland regardless. In order that Arch Lector Hansmier can maintain the morale of the foot soldiers, he asked that Oswald accompany the unit of Knights on this expedition.

BUILD/CONVERSION: An old Mounted Warrior Priest model. No conversion was needed.

PAINTING: Inspired by the coronation of Sigmar scene in the book ‘Empire’, I wanted to make the two Priests in my list representative of the wolves of Ulric. To do this I tried to paint Oswald in opposite colors as Arch Lector Hansmier. Undercoated light grey, just like everything else. Armour is Dwarf Bronze, highlighted in Burnished Gold. Robes are Enchanted Blue blended with Ice Blue or Sunburst Yellow blended with Skull White. The Wolf Pelt is Charadon Granite dry brushed with Fortress Grey. The hardest part was making the blade of the axe look like ice, which was done with many layers of Enchanted Blue, Ice Blue, Skull White and Codex Grey.

BASING: Just Snakebite Leather until I finish the unit he will be joining. Thanks to Vaiuri I plan to try to make the unit's bases look like a mountain pass using rocks and bushes along the edges of the units, accented with snow and twigs.

STILL TO DO: The base and I need to add a shield on there somewhere.

HIGHS AND LOWS: I’m very happy with this model. I would have to say the high point for me on this was learning how to quickly (and effectively) paint the horse and its barding.

Warrior Priest of Ulric

Nearly Finished picture gives a good look at the front.
A close up of the Ice effect on the axe blade.

POINTS: Warrior Priest (90) Mounted (10) with Barding (4), Heavy Armour (4) and Shield (2) = 110 points

UNIT: ‘Fist of Iron’ (Empire Great Cannon)

BACKGROUND/THEME: Along with the men Master Continni brought from Nuln to lend support in Middenhiem he requisitioned the use of the Mortars; “Lions Roar” and “Comet Caller” as well as the Great Cannon “Fist of Iron”.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Nothing much, other than a simple arm swap on the guy in the back.

PAINTING: Undercoated black. Black clothing is dry-brushed Codex Grey, then several washes of Badab Black. Hose is Fortress Grey. The accent color on this unit is Enchanted Blue.

BASING: Nothing yet.

HIGHS AND LOWS: I am very happy with how this method of painting worked and how nice the black cloth turned out.

POINTS: Nuln Great Cannon (100) = 100 points

Total this month: 210 points

Total Painted so far: 1137 (Six Months Painting and 1 Joker Used)

To do this month: 6 Knights of the White Wolf, including full Command.

I think we have few enough entries each month now that I will just continue to try to comment on everyones work. For those of you that dont want to:

Orcs & Goblins : 2000 Points (MEN)

Night Goblin BSB

An old metal Fanatic with hands from Wolf Riders and the banner from the Boar Boyz. He really seems to be strained there, running with that huge banner. Very simple conversion but it just seemed to make perfect sense.

I think I'm finding a great compromise between quality and speed. I try not to water the paints down too much, so not everything has a mooth gradient blend, but enough for everything to still be smoothly layered and sharp.

Scorched Grass on Graveyard Earth. Graveyard Earth and Bestial Brown mixed with the grass while the glue dries along with some black, to make dirt.

Freehand design on the banner. I probably won't do that anytime soon though.

Well, it was a great model to paint. Didn't really spend much time on it but it was just that much more fun each time I did.

Night Goblin Battle Standard Bearer - 55
Total this month: 55

TOTAL POINTS: 870 (still using old army book)

DICE ROLL: 5 - but there aren't so many now so I'm commenting on everyone this month.

Also, I'd like to point out what I was actually doing with my painting time this month: http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=300078

Well, took longer then I hoped, but the computer guys forgot to call me when they finished repairing my pc. So, well, it's done, and I updated the table!
Got a busy day ahead of me, but tomorrow I'll make some pictures and send them to Malorian so that he can update the first post.

That's a Joker for my High Elves, although I think I have enough points to tide me over.

You do have enough points, so no joker for you.

TOTAL POINTS: 689 if I am not mistaken.

You are correct.

I'm afraid I'm dropping out guys, my Empire army has grabbed my full hobby attention right now, leading to a loss of interest in finishing up my DE. Maybe it might be possible to buy my way back in if i paint enough in a month or two time, but i don't see it

Since you got enough points already, I'll drop you down to the boyz section, and you'll shine forever in the ToFP Hall of Fame!

I know it's not commenting time yet, but since I had to post anyway, I figured I could just as well say it...

Sweet conversion!

I have a question. It doesn't say in the FAQ, so far I have been listing my models as what they are based on what is on the model.

I see people that post things like 'general + magic sword + extra magic ring' and count that towards points. Is that the idea? Or is it just the models and whatever is always on them or an option you put on them (skeleton spearmen more expensive then skeleton handweapon men)

It's your choice whether you want to count magic items or not.
I don't count magic items, because that way I get a bit more done (although I have lots of points sunk in lords and heroes as it is), but if you have a specific army list in mind in which your characters will be equipped in a certain way it makes sense to count the points for that.

08-04-2011, 15:28
As Emperor says, whatever suits the person.
That is, as long as your goblins don't suddenly 'counts as' knights of khorne...

BTW, again I didn't paint, but I'm still ahead, so this time I post 0 points again.

I did do some stuff, though. Been assembling models and buildings.

09-04-2011, 16:36

UNIT: Maxx Ree'bo, Slann Mage-Priest

BACKGROUND/THEME: I'm not a big fan of the GW colour scheme, so I decided to use more natural colours for my Lizardmen, led by Slann Mage-Priest Maxx Ree'bo (sans keyboard),

BUILD/CONVERSION: Model is staight out of box, base is constructed from various materials, including a beetle from the plastic Fanatics box.

PAINTING: Enchanted blue with white added for highlights. ice blue for his belly.
All metal is dwarf bronze washed with devlan mud and highlighted with more dwarf bronze.

The palanquin was really simple, basecoat of dheneb stone washed with devlan mud and some gryphonne sepia in the corners.

BASING: Sand painted Calthan Brown, drybrushed with Dheneb Stone and washed with Devlan mud. Then I glued some static grass on and painted the sides Orkhide Shade.

STILL TO DO: Stegadon hopefully for next month.

HIGHS AND LOWS: This is easily my favourite miniature in the Lizardman range and has huge choice in colour schemes. Really enjoyed painting him.

POINTS : Slann with magic items etc 450pt total so another 225pts for this month.

TOTAL POINTS : 1254 in total and 1 Joker used.

High Elves to follow in a day or two.

10-04-2011, 04:58
Orc unit: 15 arrer boyz

Cost: 105

Lizardmen unit: 6 cold one cavalry

Cost: 215

Ups and downs: Well I'm now done the orc side of my tale but it is a real chore to get the lizardmen done. I have sooo much greenskin stuff I want to do yet it is my lizardmen that are behind in points...

Next up: Old school slann to finish lizardmen off and then just the odd orc stuff.

10-04-2011, 08:03
@ Malorian
Then why not start another orc army? We all know you can do it :)

You can also just keep adding to the orc army. No problem there. 3000 is a nice amount of points to finish with...

Well it's comments time again! Looks like I'll be kicking off!

Page 1:

@Matrim_Cauthon: Really nice looking warriors mate, that red is done superbly.

@someone2040: Clean looking elfs, really nice man, Taurox is coming along very nicely too. Good looking shaman too.

@Ego Ninja: Great Gobbos, really like the skin. That catapult's really well done too, that Warpstone's fantastic, Really nice Chaos Dwarfs too.

@Confessor_Atol: Awesome Dwarfs mate! Love the older ones you've mixed in, and that Bugman/Anvil is going to be epic!

@sssk: Nice giant, very earthy.

@Daniel36: Very very nice mate, they are superb.

@Kaos: Really good looking warriors, love that feehand banner on the BSB as well.

Page 2:

@EmperorNorton: Cool ogres, dirty butcher and really nice stripy pants. Good giant too, nice man, nice.

@Hilte2: Nice clean knights mate, very well done.

@Chicken Pig: Great champ, gribbley spawn and nice use of different helmets on the marauders.

@gaarew: Wow, thats a horde for sure. I'm not really a fan of the mantic stuff but it looks really effective in those big units.

@gsmc: Pics a little dark, but good to see someone joining in :D.

@Purplebeard: Great shieldmaidens mate! Good to see another Dwarf painter hanging in there.

@Tonberry: Really nice seaguard man, great work.

@Fabius Bile: Awesome idea for the werewolf, the gorger minis are a bit naff eh? Can't wait to see them both finished.

@Dark Apostle: Yeah, that stuffs great man, simply great. I wouldn't worry too much about being behind, it only takes one big month to catch up.

@Illuminus79: I do like those old Storm of Chaos Ulric models, yours looks good man.

@Solun Decius: Awesome conversion man! Such a fantastic idea and of course as well painted as always.

Page 3:

@Fanny Crowbar: Great Slann, that blue is just fantastic.

@Malorian: Nice work Mal, I do like your yellow Saurus.

11-04-2011, 05:42
Joker for me too...

11-04-2011, 11:00
Sadly I'm going to have to drop out, I'm really struggling to get things done, did nearly nothing this month and with exams this month I'm unlikely to finish anything for next time. Been a blast though and I've painted far more than I would have without it.

11-04-2011, 17:18

Matrim_Cauthon: Good looking unit. That's a scary big weapone your unit champ has. Almost too big.

someone2040: Interesting bass bull. Can't wait to see him finished.

Ego Ninja: I like all the different shades on the plagueapult.

Confessor_Atol: Damn dwarfs always getting drunk... ;) I always thought those would be good models to use as markers when a warmachine misfires and can't fire next turn.

sssk: Better to have something painted than nothing, so don't see it as a failure. His skin turned out well.

perplexiti: I've never noticed that his cloak was a dragon before. Here's hoping for a carnosaur next month :)

Daniel36: Cool looking banner and great looking unit. The detail work is perfect.

Kaos: Now there's a wild looking unit. So many different detail to pick out from the whole.

EmperorNorton: That's a mean looking butcher. Nice conversion. Skinny giants are funny :D

Hilte2: Pictures aren't showing up at work.

Chicken Pig: A non-red khorne model? Madness!!! A crazy spawn with an axe? Hillarious!!!

gaarew: Those are some freaky models. Interesting to see the other ranges.

gsmc: Ha! Didn't notices that was from you until I got to the comments. Had it been empire I would have seen right away. Anyway, don't worry too much about the detail of clan rats. It's more important to just have them looking good as a unit once you have 200+ of them.

Purplebeard: Interesting models. Too bad they suffer from monopose. The army is coming along well. Needs more purple though ;)

Tonberry: Nice looking unit filler. The stone effect is well done.

Fabius Bile: Without a doubt that is one of my favorite tyrant conversions ever :D

Dark Apostle: Perfect shading.

Illuminus79: Good to see him finished.

Solun Decius: Good looking conversion. You just need to get that freehand done quick so he stops waving the white flag.

11-04-2011, 17:28
Daniel36: Cool looking banner and great looking banner. The detai work is perfect.

Hehehehehhh... Thanks!

11-04-2011, 18:09
sssk: Better to have something painted than nothing, so don't see it as a failure. His skin turned out well.

True, true. Also, getting him chucked out last month as well as having started what I was aiming to do means I've almost finished this month's stuff already!

I'm actually finding that I'm running out of models now. I'll have to plan another 500 points or so. Dare I foray into the world of the boar boy?........

11-04-2011, 18:19
Hehehehehhh... Thanks!

Fixed now.

Can you tell I really liked your banner ;)

11-04-2011, 18:39
perplexiti: I've never noticed that his cloak was a dragon before. Here's hoping for a carnosaur next month :)

Thanks Malorian, and about the "possible" Carnosaur next month, well all I can say is mmmmaybe ;P.

11-04-2011, 19:09
Dare I foray into the world of the boar boy?........

Yes, you do.

11-04-2011, 19:22
I'm getting ticked off - we need a status update. When is the table for the thread going to be up?

Seriously, we need the table people. I want to see how many are holding on and how many are dropping out. :skull:

You really liked my banner! Well, I am glad, because it took me quite a lot of time! Thanks for the kind comment!

Seriously, we need the table people. I want to see how many are holding on and how many are dropping out. :skull:

I was being lazy :p

That was easy. It's not that big anymore... anyway, I PM'ed it to Malorian so that he can put it in the first post.

Since I took all older drop-outs from the table, here's the number:
96 drop-outs.
79 still in.

Last year at this moment was:
72 out.
72 still in.

So a bigger amount and percentage of drop-outs this year, but also more people still in.

12-04-2011, 17:33
WoC: 2000 POINTS (MEN)

UNIT: 7 knights of khorne, Warriors unit filler (4 models)

BACKGROUND/THEME: There knights, of khorne... You gonna die boy...
Its a torture rack and an exucutioner. the warrior only has one arm so is not fit to fight, do he does that instead.

BUILD/CONVERSION: knights staight out of box, an old warrior i couldnt find an arm for and a rack i found in my bits box.

PAINTING: boltgun metal and baal red makes a pinky brassy colour, not good.

BASING: still to do.

STILL TO DO: Basing.

HIGHS AND LOWS: knights turned out well and i did my first unit filler. not happy with the warriors paint tho

POINTS : 7 knights of khorne with full command (360) 4 chaos warriors (60)

TOTAL POINTS : Giant (225) + 20 Chaos Warriors with champ and standard (374) + 10 Hounds with scaly and posion (50) + sorc lvl 2 on steed (186) + gamesday Exalted hero of korn with 2 hand weapons (129) + 10 hounds (50) + 40 marauders (290) + 7 knights of khorne with full command (360) 4 chaos warriors (60)

12-04-2011, 17:33
Table is up. Thanks for the work Braad :)

13-04-2011, 02:23
I hate to but I hve to Joker this month. My ADD is keeping me from focusing on one project. Hope to have more next month.

13-04-2011, 07:48
@Braad & Malorian: Thanks for getting the chart up. Its always good to see the state of play. 113000+ points - now that would be one awesome battle!

Comments time:

@Matrim_Cauthon (WoC): Superb colour - you have just the right amount of orange to brighten and lift that red ,whislt keeping the overbearing, sinister Khorne look. I like the effect on the horns too - how did you do it?

@someone2040 (HE): Bright, clean, crisp paintjob. Great.

@someone2040 (BoC): Taurox is awesome - brass is very difficult to paint well, but you've pulled it off. The glowing eye skull on the Shaman's staff is pretty good too. Together, the army is looking great. I hope you're going to carry on - maybe go for another 1000pts then you have some options(?).

@Ego Ninja (O&G/Skaven/WoC): Your images were down! But your stuff is great anyway. Managing 3 armies and completing them to sucha good standard is a big achievement.

@Confessor_Atol (Dwarves): Good to see Dwarves - there are only 5 Dwarf players left in the tale now. You have quite a force there. I'm looking forward to Bugman!

@sssk (O&G): That guy is a better model than the current one. The tanned, leathery looking skin suits him. Your army is pretty damn big now!

@perplexiti (Dwarves/Lizardmen): Same as for Ego Ninja. But I will add that I really like your stuff - slightly jealous now because you can do characters and war machines, whereas I'm putting out footsloggers more-or-less until the end now. I really like that you're doing Lizardmen too.

@Daniel36 (Empire): Beautiful - in every aspect - great colour choice and execution (nice red and yellow), good 'posing' of the figures, and a finely done banner too. I disagree with your friend - maybe dark blue would be better, but you use the blue so little that it doesn't have much impact overall against the other colours. Great job.

@Kaos (WoC): Brilliant purple, blue and white - excellent blending,. shading, and highlighting, but then you probably already knew that. Very nice, subtle glowing effect on the banner of the champion, and skillful purple tinting on the main banner.

@Khorneguy (DE): You could just swap to Empire for Boys? :)

@EmperorNorton (OK): I like the banner guy. Your blood spatter effects are spot on.

@Hilte2 (Brets): Excellent execution from what I can see. Side-on shots or 3/4 view shots would be better.

@EmperorNorton (OK2): Nice.

@Chicken Pig (WoC): That's a good contribution for one month. The spawn both grab me.

@gaarew (VC): WOW! - lots, and lots, and lots. Those Mantic zombies look so, so much better than GW's crappy efforts, and your blood and guts effects are brilliant.

@gsmc (Skaven): Its good to have a new entrant at this stage. I like the glowing green eyes!

@Tonberry (HE): Superb gems. The blue and pruple scheme really works well.

@Fabius Bile (OK): Loving the Tyrant with his beer and hammer. He'd fit right in with the Dwarves.

@Dark Apostle (Empire): I can never get over how clean and crisp your painting style is. Still a few months left to catch up on the numbers!

@Wulf: Ah well - hopefully see more of your stuff on Warseer soon.

@Illuminus79 (Empire): Boss man and cannon. Cool. White Wolves should be fun.

@Solun Decius (O&G): Lovely and bright. He is fairly struggling with that banner pole :D

@Fanny Crowbar (Lizardmen): Slann - brilliant. Love your army.

@Malorian (O&G/Lizardmen): Nice output and colour schemes. Between you and Fanny Crowbar, you really make me want to get a Lizardman army. And that's bad, since I have loads of proper old school metal Chaos Knights to paint, and O&G, and I want to do a Cthulthu-themed army, and I want TK, and WE, and so on and so on....

@reddeveil18(WoC): I like your painting - the brick red gives a good overall effect IMO.

Oh, er, and I've decided to enter my Gnomes (Empire proxy) into Boys 1000pts. I'm not going to attempt to enhance the Warhammer Gnome literature or extend it at all. This is basically an excuse for my Dwarves to spam Wizards and cavalry, strictly for laughs and my own fickle amusement. It also gives me a reason for stuff like spearmen and archers for which I already have loads of really old-school tiny C-Series figures. So there. First pics soon....

13-04-2011, 10:50
Bad: Joker this month for both my HE and DoC
Good: Almost finished next months entries for both armies. They just need a little more work (preferably by a much better painter than myself).

13-04-2011, 19:25
Few more comments:

Fanny Crowbar: Wonderful looking slann. Love how you did the spots and all the extra detail (skink in water).

Malorian: Seriously? That's it? If I wanted to see stuff like that I wuold have just puked into my eyes. Do you even know what shading is?!?!?

reddevil18: Neat little unit filler. Definately unique.

15-04-2011, 02:45
Yay, I have some stuff for March!

For my Orcs and Goblins I have...5 orcs. Ok, so not that much, but still.

That's 35 points! For a total of 1237!

Highs: Getting 5 orcs done.

Lows: Getting 5 orcs done/

For the high elves I have 4 Manticores...Ok, they count as eagles, but they sure look like manticores!

That's 200 points for a total of 1033 points!

Highs: Getting something done for my elves. I really like the troll that's turned to stone on one of the manticores. The three very similar ones are from descent. The fourth, funky looking one, is from a terrible game called Dark world that has some reasonably nice miniatures in it. I really liked painting this one as it reminded me of the good old days of 5th edition where everything was just a little bit silly and fun.

Lows: I tried casting those torsos I sculpted, only to discover I am very bad at casting and only managed a 50% success rate. So I bought my troops from the Warstore and they should be arriving soon.

And everything I have painted for the tale so far. The elves look like they are in trouble

15-04-2011, 07:53
@SamVimes: Awesome stuff Mr. Vimes - Dark World Manticore (greast conversion with the wings btw) and Battlemasters Orcs, and very nicely painted and based!

Anyway, onto some figures...

ARMY : Gnomes (Empire Proxy): 1000 Points (BOYS) (Yes, cheese, I know...)

UNIT: 6 Knights inc. Command

BACKGROUND/THEME: Gnomes - they live with my Dwarves in their northern hold, in a region under the terrible influence of Chaos. Led by the ancient and dwindling Purplebeard family, they are more-or-less cut off from the rest of civilization, and struggling to survive.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Colin Dixon Champion, the rest are Citadel figures. Standard has brass banner pole and icon from Marauder standard bearer, musician has a horn from an Ancient Germans sprue (Wargames Factory maybe?). The rest are vanilla. Anybody who follows my blog will have seen them before, but they have been done this year, concurrently with the ToFP. I've been indecisive about whether to add them because so far I've been unwilling to commit to painting another 1000pts, but damn it, I'll do it!

STILL TO DO: Nothing.

HIGHS & LOWS: High - Dwarf Cavalry!

DICE ROLL : Er, probably not relevant anymore - the mighty throng has wilted to a small band of brethren. I'll just comment on everyone this month.

WIP shot - more to come.

The plan is simple - get all of my random Dwarf/Gnome figures painted. For the first 1000pts, I am going to do a Wizard Lord, 2 Wizards, and 2x 10 Cavalry, plus maybe a little unit of Crossbowmen. Next - either 4 more cavalry, or a Wizard Lord.

15-04-2011, 14:20
Hmm, I've lost the IoB wizard that I painted in the first month somewhere in my mate's garage, so I've got another off of ebay and am painting him up for next month, hopefully will be an improvement on the original.

Long story made short, I`ve been out of all things hobby for a looong time but can I join up again? I`ll make double speed and throw in 2 jokers just to fill in the blank entries.

Vampire Counts - Stirland themed

Month 2: Spirit Host - 195pts
Month 3: Cairn Wraiths w/Tomb Banshee - 275 pts
Month 4: joker
Month 5: joker

Highs : Finally posting some pics! Been out due to many things but I`m back and ready to get this army done!

Lows: Not many now, but been many lows...

TOTAL POINTS: 267 + 470 = 737 pts

Necromancer#2, Skeleton Regiment, Wight King BsB and Vamp on Hellsteed.

Here`s my finished units:
Spirit Host:
(sorry for the blurry pic!)

Cairn Wraiths w/Tomb Banshee:

So with those two entries and two jokers I need to finish 600 points for next months entry, and I can do it cause I want this army ready to go for Storm of Magic :D

18-04-2011, 02:22
@ Matrim -Great looking Khorn warriors you have. This is the first time I'd seen them with the GW halbred kit. Also, I love the blood letter standard great paint and basing too. You should be proud.

@someone- Nice clean swordmasters. Classic HE blue. Can miss there!
Also, the beasts look great

@Ego ninja-great gobo characters, and a nice looking force you have started there. Skaven stuff, and chaos are looking tops too.

@Confessor Atol- enough fooling around on warseer, back to you painting station and get to work!:D

@sssk- Nice classic giant, and good looking hord you have there. Looks like a little bit of everything....that's small and green.

@perplexiti- Great classic model. I love the ham fistedness of those old dwarves, the hands are the size of the heads. You did Ungrim justice. The force overall looks reall cohesive

Nice lizards too. Can't wait to see what you do with the rank and file.

@Daniel- Quality unit you have there. Great exicution, and top notch color choice.

@Kaos- Its been great watching your army develop. Again, cohesive force with great technical painting skill.

@Emp norton- Nice looking ogre characters. I like the striped pants. Overall very nice quality. Great giant too.

@Hilte- Nice looking realm knights Very clean painting

@ Chicken pig- Nice number of units put out this month. Good table-top standard too.

@gaarew- That is some of the best painting I've seen on mantic minis. Great zombies. Care to share you zombie flesh recipe? And over a hundred of them!?!? unreal. :)

@gsmc- decent skaven unit you have there. only 200 more rats to go.

@Purplebeard- Good looking ol' skool dwarves. Interesting Asgard figs. Great looking gyro, and the force is really starting to come together.

@Tonberry- Great looking LSG. The basing is nice. The unit filler looks great. It makes me want to paint elves.

@Fabius. I love this Tyrant/gorger pair

@Dark Apostle -Fantastic quality as usual. I always look forward to seeing your submission

All I can do now. I'll finish the rest later....

18-04-2011, 11:21
Comments time:

@someone2040 (HE): Very clean looking unit, the way High Elves should be.

@someone2040 (BoC): Nice effect on the bronze. Shaman looks great too... I have two of those minis lying about and this makes me want to paint them too.

@Ego Ninja (O&G): Army is coming together very nicely. I absolutely love the sight of a (splendidly painted, no less) Goblin army (Ok, with some orcs added to the mix).

@Ego Ninja (Skaven): Superbly painted war machine. The speed with which you keep churning out such beautifully painted models is amazing!

@Ego Ninja (WoC): I painted those ones myself a couple of days ago. Good luck with the Cannon itself. Mine was a hell to assemble.

@Confessor_Atol: Very characterful unit of crossbowdwarves you got there. Love the effect on the telescope-thingy atop the cannon. Great paintjobs.

@sssk: That army shot makes me drool. Nicely tanned Giant, fits well with the rest of the army!

@perplexiti (Dwarves): Very nicely painted Slayer king. Love the orange.

@perplexiti (Lizardmen): Yeah, another one of those wouldn't hurt you. Very good paintjob.

@Daniel36: Very nice looking unit. I enjoyed painting these myself for last year's tale too. Banner looks splendid!

@Kaos: Congratulations to you sir. An amazing looking Warriors unit. Mine pales in comparison... though you can't really compare the discipline of Khorne to Slaanesh of course. Cheers!

@EmperorNorton: Excellent Standard Bearer. Blood on the banner looks amazingly real, something at chich I fail completely. Nice icon too.

@Hilte2: The painting looks very clean and crisp to me. Too bad the photos aren't a little bigger or from a different angle!

@EmperorNorton: Love these giants. Like the different colours!

@Chicken Pig (WoC): That's a whole lot of mini's dude. I especially like the marauders. I always shove these further back down the line, but one day I will have to paint them (horde of 40). Great job!

@gaarew: I just made my first mantic buy thanks to you (Dwarf King's Hold). Those skellies look amazing! Splendid paintjob!

@gsmc: Welcome again! Very dark skaven, but still colourful enough to work.

@Purplebeard: Very good looking unit. Love those metal minis. Too bad those reaper minis didn't work out for you. 28 mm scale isn't the same everywhere it seems.

@Tonberry: Nothing short of WOW to you, sir. You use the same colour scheme I did for my Dark Elves, but it works... Excellent painting.

@Fabius Bile: Tyrant will look amazing when fully painted. Hell, he looks superb as he does now!

@Dark Apostle: It's normal when you paint up to this standard that you can't paint more (although some of the above do it? - not everyone can spend as much time on their hobby as they would like then). Anyway, what I am trying to say is: excellent unit. Nice muted colours. Very realistic!

@Illuminus79: Glad to read you've found a painting method that works for you. The army should look very nice!

@Solun Decius: splendid conversion. Took a look at your Cthulhuu stuff and I must say: time well spent!

@Fanny Crowbar: Excellent model, terrific paintjob. 'nuf said!

@Malorian: Two great additions to your armies. The speed at which you paint never ceases to amaze me.

@reddeveil18: I am working on some knights too at the moment. Just assembling them has been a hell of a task, so kudos to you! Good paintjob!

@SamVines: Got to love those old school Orcs. Manticores look very cool!

@Purplebeard: Nice looking cavalry unit you got there. Lots of charachter in there, topped of with a great paintjob!

@Red Skullz: Eery looking unit. But then again, that was probably the point. Painting is up to a high standard!

Big thanks to everyone taking the time to comment, and big cheer for everyone still in this tale!

@Matrim_Cauthon (WoC): Superb colour - you have just the right amount of orange to brighten and lift that red ,whislt keeping the overbearing, sinister Khorne look. I like the effect on the horns too - how did you do it?

Quite simple actually: Basecoat with 75/25 mix of Bleached Bone/Dhene Stone (Dheneb is there for better coverage since I paint from a black undercoat), followed by a light Devlan Mud wash and a heavier Gryphonne Sepia was. Where necesarry touch up with Bleached Bone. Told you it was easy :)

@perplexiti: Thanks very much. Likewise!

@Malorian: Yep, the monopose problem will disappear when I add more (and different) models (the aim is 40), and strategically arrange the unit. Lots of experience of this from painting WAB armies. :)

Yes, I know that more purple beards are in order. I have considered the possibility of making my Hammerers/Huscarls a fully purple-bearded unit. What do you think?

@Confessor_Atol: Thanks very much. There are plenty more to come, easily more than will fit the 2000pts. As for the Asgard figures, I just found a mounted Asgard Dwarf King in my stuff the other day - I may make him a Gnome King for my Gnomes. Maybe. I did fantasise about putting him on a Hippogriff, but thought that Dwarves (or even Gnomes) + monsters was just too big a leap. Wizards used to be in the rules (and still are in WFRP), and the cavalry models do exist (so there was a precedent). I mean yes, technically you could take a dragon or griffon or whatever back in 4th/5th ed if you wanted to, but it was a bit unfluffy and I never did it. Man do I regret that now though, bet it would have been fun.... :(

@Matrim_Cauthon: Yes, the Reaper figures were huge. Shame, because the sculpts were really nice. I might keep one and make it into a statue, etc. I'll sell the others. I'm going to try and get a few more of the DH battleaxe female Dwarves, and buy some Tale of War ones too (which I'll convert to DHW). I basically want enough DH weapon models to fill out at least the front rank, then I can play friendlies and use them as HW+shield or DHW as I wish.

The Dwarven/Gnome cavalry and wizards are going to be Empire proxy - I've been undecided about putting them into the tale but I've only them this year so I decided to go for it. It should give me more impetus to get them done. Sadly though, I am now short by 2 dwarven cavalry. :(

Thanks for the painting tips too!

I have considered the possibility of making my Hammerers/Huscarls a fully purple-bearded unit. What do you think?

Do it! :)

The more you follow your theme the better.

I have gained some momentum and even though I figured I would mainly be dropping from this tale once done (like my orcs are) I am now half way through painting 36 squigs :p

Damn those things are easy to paint!

I'm just worried that since they rank up so close that the paint is going to just chip off anyway :(

Sorry everyone, I've got nothing done for a while now, so:

Hopefully with two bank holiday weekends in a row I can get cracking again.

Comments on stuff that caught my eye:

@Fanny Crowbar - Great looking Slann.

@gaarew - An incredible number of miniatures painted to an excellent standard. Well done!

@Dark Apostle - I love the smoothness of your painting. Very impressive.

@Kaos - Wonderful colours and attention to detail.

Matrim_Cauthon: They look good, if a bit orange. However, I am guessing that has more to do with the picture than your paint.

someone2040 (HE): The turquoise color is a great accent for these guys.

someone2040 (Beastmen): The Brass looks really nice and realistic. I can’t wait to see the finished model.

someone2040 (Beastmen): The army is coming along nicely.

Ego Ninja (Goblins): Fencers Blades on a Goblin Big Boss? That’s a great idea!

Ego Ninja (Skaven): Nice clean paint job. You may want to try adding some gloss coat to the warpstone piece.

Ego Ninja (Warriors of Chaos): These little guys look pretty good, especially the tarnishing. I wish I hadn’t lost mine crew.

Confessor_Atol: The drunken Dwarf leaning on his axe is a great model and adds a lot to the character of the unit. The scope on the cannon is wonderful.

sssk: Great work on the skin. I love how bulky he looks…muscular rather than fat.

perplexity (Dwarves): The Dragon cloak is very well done with great highlighting.

perplexity (Lizardmen): I really like the pale color you used for the Salamanders skin and scales. It really helps him to stand out.

Daniel36: Rather inspiring work there. The yellows look great, which I know is one of the hardest colors to pull off well.

Kaos: I don’t even know where to start. Your blending and free hand work is phenomenal. I think I will leave it at that so I still have some praises left to say next month.

EmperorNorton (OK1): Your banner is great, the little blood splatters add a lot to it and the yellow and purple stripes are well done. The butcher is absolutely gruesome.

Hilte2: Very clean looking work. I can’t wait to see the whole army.

EmperorNorton (OK2): Great work with a fun old model.

Chicken Pig: Good looking models. I really like the ball and chain in the Exalted Heroes left hand.

gaarew: Ewww! Those are some of the grossest looking zombies I’ve seen. The skeletons remind me of the ‘Army of Darkness’. Nice touch.

gsmc: Nicely dirtied up models. They look like they just crawled out of the sewers.

Purplebeard: Bringing it back to the 80s, huh? I like these little ladies.

Tonberry: Good looking unit filler. The colors of your Seaguard remind me of the Shadow Warriors of old.

Fabius Bile: This looks like it is going to be an amazing model. The idea of using the mortar bits to make a stein is too funny.

Dark Apostle: You did a good job with those. I feel your pain on these though… I will be trying to paint 40 of these little buggers soon.

Solun Decius: Great conversion work. The paint job is really good, especially the blade.

Fanny Crowbar: The finished Maxx lives up to his legendary name. Well done.

Malorian: Great looking “Orc” skin on your Arrer Boys. I like the yellow on the Cold One riders, but it seems a little flat in the pictures.

reddevil18: You may want to go back and wash or shadow the knights, as they seem a little flat. Also, what color did you use for the goldish metal? Great idea for a unit filler.

SamVimes: Such cute little mono-pose orcs! Your paint job really helps me take them seriously though. The pants are especially well done. Cool idea with your “eagles”.

Purplebeard (Gnomes): Why? :cheese: The ponies look great. I may need some pointers as I get working on my knights again soon.

Red Skullz: Interesting work. Is your entire army going to be blue, or just the ethereal models?

Shadow Fall: Firstly, kudos for the ‘Knights Tale’ reference. Secondly, kudos for a great looking model. Your blending of the black to blue is seemless.

perplexity: I am glad I was able to do it justice.

Malorian: Thanks.

Purplebeard: The knights are not turning out to be all that fun. Building and converting the command was great, but I dodnt know how I feel about how they are turning out.

Matrim_Cauthon: It is coming along pretty well, thank you. Now I just need to find the dedication to see it through to the end.

My WIP/teaser picture:
What do you all think about his armour? I can’t decide if I like it or not.

Comments Page 1:

@ Matrim_Cauthon: Very nice! I think the highlights look great. Did you dip them, or is it just extensive use of devlan mud?

@ someone2040 (HE): Looking good, I honestly can't tell which one is the converted standard bearer, so the work can't be that shoody, ey?

@ someone2040 (Beastmen): All brass? That's a unique take.Looking forward to see what it will look like with the details painted. The shaman looks cool too.

@ Ego Ninja (Goblins): The characters look ace! I love the reds, and the bases are nice - greener grass would probably have been too much like the skin colour.

@Ego Ninja (Skaven): Love the brass and the red tint to the wood.

@ Ego Ninja (Warriors of Chaos): Brutal little fellas! Nice verdigris.

@ Confessor_Atol: Love the drunken dwarfs! And I see that you aim for better line od sight for the whole unit by putting them on those bases :-)

@ sssk: Solid paint job, will look great when you finish his base.

@ perplexity (Dwarves): I like that model! Nice shine on the scales. Will he get some snow on the base too?

@perplexity (Lizardmen): Solid job, I think the bases, once finished will enhance the overall look of the army.

@ Daniel36: Looking good, nice free hand motif on the banner! Keep the blue!

@ Kaos: Awsome! Your bases rock!

returning to northern ireland in a few days (from australia), already sent my models home, so will need to joker this month.

Matrim Cauthon : Khorne Warriors look great and the army is looking very impressive.
Ego Ninja (O&G) : Great looking Night Goblin characters. I like how the red stands out in your army.
Ego Ninja (Skaven) : Really like the wood on the Catapult. Not so much the poop, blegh! (In a good way)
Ego Ninja (Warriors of Chaos) : The dark stunties look good, really like the the brassy look to them.
Confessor_Atol : The Quarellers are great, and adding in the drunk dwarves really adds character. It looks like the army is coming together quite nicely and the Keg of Doom looks like it's going to be awesome!
ssk : Norm looks good to me. Let's see him based in future months.
perplexiti (Dwarfs) : Ungrim is nicely painted, and certainly stands out from all the metal in the rest of your army.
perplexiti (izardmen) : I agree that the Sail should be painted a contrasting colour, I usually go with the colour of the scales. But honestly, the Sallie still looks pretty good even without it.
Daniel36 - Great looking Marienburg Greatswords. I think it looks fine with the blue red and yellow. It's how Marienburg rolls.
Kaos (Warriors) : The Warriors look stunning. Purple is not a colour I've tried out, but I think you've got a really good balance going on with the unit and the cool shades just look amazing.

EmperorNorton (OK1) : The BSB and Butcher are well painted. Have you thought about doing the BSB up a little more to make him stand out a bit? Just interested how he'll look next to normal Bulls and Ironguts and whether he stands out enough (Maybe he does, as the banner pole looks extended?)
Hilte2: I think the Orange doesnt look bad, think the Knights look good overall, hope to see them in a unit sometime.
EmperorNorton (OK2) : Nice work on the Giant. The extra effort really makes him stand out I think.
Chicken Pig : Great looking Warriors you've got there. Like the nice mix of heads on the Marauders.
gaarew : Those undead look amazing, great work.
gsmc : Nice looking skaven, look pretty dirty.
Purplebeard : Shieldmaidens look good, and definately fit in with the rest of the army.
Tonberry : Really like your Sea Guard. Like that there's no white on the figures, certainly makes the High Elves look a lot darker.
Fabius Bile : That's a really cool conversion you've got for your Tyrand, I really like it.
Dark Apostle : I agree completely about your oppinions on the State Troop models. I certainly don't mind them, but they have too many details. Would've liked some of the details to be glueable rather than fixed on, it's just a downer to have to pick out so many fine details. But your models look great, so the work definately pays off.
Illuminus79 : The Warrior Priest of Ulric is nicely painted as well as the cannon. Hope to see him and his unit based soon.
Solun Decius : The conversion seems simple, and yet works very well. Very nicely painted in addition, and you've got a cool BSB right there.

Fanny Crowbar : Great looking Slann Mage Priest. Simple and not overdone base works as well.
Malorian (Orcs) : Orc Arrer Boyz look good, no nonsense painting.
Malorian (Lizardmen) : The Cold ones look good. Although the eyes feel a bit odd... I always bail on my Lizardmen eyes and just paint them a straight flat colour which seems to work fine rather than trying for pupils.
reddevil18 : Khorne Knights look pretty good, and your unit filler looks interesting.
SamVimes : Some awesome looking models you have there. Don't recognise them (must be old I guess!) but looks really good all the same.
Purplebeard (Gnomes) : Gnomish Cavalry, cute >.< But very nicely painted
Red Skullz: Like the look of your Spirit Hosts and Wraiths. Great scheme you've got for the ghostly figures.
Shadow Fall : The Vampire lords looks great, and the blue armour really stands out. I really like it.

Purplebeard : Yep, there's still about 1000 points left for me to paint (Although, by the end of April it should be more like 500-ish points). Was just mentioning that I have over 2k points painted between my Mens and Boys Beastmen, so it's an achievement right there.
Matrim_Cauthon : I'm impartial to the current Bray Shaman figures (Mordheim Bray Shaman and Malagor excluded). They're too 2 dimensional I feel, but still, they don't look half bad with some paint on them.
Dark Apostle : Yep, all brass. I figure that's what the backstory is meant to indicate (as he only has one weak chink and that's his neck). That's what I think the backstory is anyway, and not Taurox becoming all armoured up.

UNIT: Phoenix Guard, Sea Guard, Swordmasters, Dragon Princes, Ellyrion Reavers, Spearmen, Archers.

BACKGROUND/THEME: Prince Eravin has been dispatched by the Phoenix King to reclaim and defend a lost Elven City that has risen from under the sea. Home to numerous magical artefacts, the island has drawn other attention as well...

BUILD/CONVERSION: All models are straight out of the box, except for Archer and Spearman Champions who are kitbashed from other High Elf kits to make them look, well, better...

PAINTING: I have decided to paint my High Elves almost ghost-like. Very pale colours and using no gold. Silver, blue, turquoise and grey will be used the most. Hair will be either a pale blonde or white. Skin a bone-like colour. Thanks to my wife and Monsterzonk for convincing me to change the gemstones to orange!

BASING: Painted Khemri Brown with flock and static grass added. Simple!

STILL TO DO: More infantry and cavalry.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Can see progress, but it is starting to get a bit tedious. I HATE painting horses.

POINTS : 4 Sea Guard with shields (52pts)
Dragon Prince (Musician) (40pts)
2 Swordmasters (30pts)
1 Phoenix Guard (15pts)
Ellyrion Reaver with bow (Champion) (28pts)
Archer (Champion) (21pts)
Spearman (Champion) (19pts)
205pts total

TOTAL POINTS : 1239 in total
