View Full Version : The Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011 MONTH 8 (& MAY WIP)

02-05-2011, 22:44
Welcome to the Tale of 40k Painters 2010-2011!

What is the Tale all about?
The aim of the Tale of Painters is to get an army fully painted within the next 12 months.

For most 40k armies the size will be somewhere between 1000 and 2000 points, but you can go higher if you want to (and you're crazy enough)! BFG and Epic armies will be slightly different, but as long as you choose an appropriate sized army for your game system then there's no problem.

Once you've chosen your army, your target is to paint roughly 10% of your army each month. For example, if you've chosen a 2000 point army then your monthly target would be 200 points. The Tale runs for one year (September 2010 to August 2011), so if you stick to your 10% monthly target then you'll only need to paint for 10 months of the year.

To cover the months when you can't/don't paint, you get 2 'Jokers'. You can play a 'Joker' at any time (provided you haven't used them both up!), which essentially means that you don't have to meet your target for that month. They can used for real life events (such as births, deaths, marriages, exams, holidays) or if you're just having a bad/slow month. If you use a 'Joker' then feel free to post a suitable image instead (a Joker or something funny).

What is this thread all about?
This thread is to be used as the completed work thread for April, up until the 10th. Please only post last month's completed work until the 10th.

On the 11th it will then become the work in progress (wip) thread for May. Feel free to post any wip pictures of what you're going to be painting this month, army lists, background stories, battle reports, questions, and comments on anyone else's posts. You can post as little or as much as you like in the wip thread, but please keep it wip. Do not post any completed work for May until the next thread opens at the start of June. The next thread will start out as to place the post your completed entries for this month, and after the deadline (now set as the 10th of each month) will become the next wip thread.

If you have not posted by the 10th, then you will have to use one of your 'Jokers'. If you have failed to post by the 10th and have already used up both of your 'Jokers', then unfortunately you will be out of the Tale.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : Unfortunately you are now too late! Don't worry though, the Tale of Painters will be starting again later in the year (August/September).

Q : Can I paint more than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, and it's great to get ahead. BUT, we would like you only to post 10% (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 10% per month. For example, if you're painting 2000 points that means 200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc. This way you won't depress those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, but we would like you to try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example, if you're painting 2000 points and you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character/tank/unit?
A : This happens a lot. If your character/tank/unit is over 10% of your army you could simply paint him/it/them over two months (the sort of time your general/tank/expensive unit deserves!). For example, last year my monthly target was 200 points and I painted a Stompa (600 points). I split painting the model into (roughly) 3 months of 200 points, posting new WIP shots each month.

Q : Do I have to use my 2 'Jokers' during the Tale?
A : No, you don't have to use them at all. If you can manage to paint/post for the full 12 months then congratulations, you'll have exceeded your target and truly embodied the spirit of the Tale!

Q : If I 'catch up' with my points, can I 'buy back' a 'Joker'?
A : Yes, just let me know in your monthly post if you would like to do this. For example, if you have a target of 200 points per month and have played one of your 'Jokers', you could 'buy back' your 'Joker' if you can manage to make up the 'Jokered' 200 points at some point. This could be from painting 400 points one month, painting 300 points over two months, or just making up smaller amounts here and there (as long as you're back on track).

Q : What's with the D6 roll in your post?
A : The D6 roll was an idea introduced in the last Tale to help ensure that everyone gets some comments on their work. If everyone rolls a D6 when they post (I use the D&D dice roller (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/dice/dice.htm) if I don't have a D6 to hand), then we should have six roughly equal groups each month. Then, if you comment on those people who rolled the same as you everyone will receive some feedback. So, if you roll a 1, comment on all of the other 1's, if you rolled a 2, comment on all of the other 2's, and so on. Of course, if you have the time/want to, there's nothing stopping you from commenting on anyone's/everyone's work.

I'll start off by posting an entry for March. Feel free to copy my post to use as a template (edited to suit your army), but as long as you post your Monthly total, Total to date, Unit(s) painted and a picture then that's fine.

If anyone has any other questions, please direct them to me (misterboff).

misterboff's Dark Eldar: March 2011 (D6 roll = 3)

MONTHLY TOTAL: 181 POINTS (monthly target: 175 points)
TOTAL TO DATE: 1052 POINTS (target to date: 1050 points)

BACKGROUND/THEME: "Wych Cult of the Blade Denied"
The Blade Denied is an elder Wych House that specialises in the art of using their foe's weapons against themselves. The irony of seeing a warrior impaled upon his own blade is always a favourite of this cult, for it shows that even a weapon cannot be trusted.

7 Wyches (inc. Haywire Grenades, 4 Shardnets and Impalers) - 124 points
Hekatrix (Agoniser, Blast Pistol, Haywire Grenades) - 57 points

Straight from the sprue (all males).

I'm roughly following the painting guide from WD371, but substituting purple in where necessary. The bases are simply Astronomicon Grey followed by Citadel Snow.

Silver: Boltgun/Badab/Mithril
Bronze: Tin Bitz/Devlan/Dwarf
Black: Chaos/Adeptus/Badab
Eldar Flesh: Space Wolves+Tallarn/Devlan/SWG+Dheneb/Rotting
Flayed Skin: Tallarn(+Vomit/Dark)/Devlan/Tau Sept Ochre/Rotting
Purple: Hormagaunt/Leviathan/Liche
Blue: Mordian/Asurmen/Enchanted/Ice
Green: Knarloc/Thraka/Goblin/Scorpion
Yellow: Iyanden/Gryphonne/Bad Moon
Orange: MSO/Baal/Vomit/Blazing

Highs: Expanding my Troops section with some more Wyches, and having all of the Wych Weapon options covered between my Troops choices.
Lows: I'm getting a bit bored of painting Wyches, but at least I don't have many left to do.

I'll paint my last 12 Wyches to give me 50 in total...

[Hekatrix, Shardnets and Impalers, Blue Wyches]

djc's beastman guard

MONTHLY TOTAL: 345 points
TOTAL TO DATE: 1375 points

Platoon Command Squad, 4x Flamer, Chimera - 105 points
Infantry Squad, Grenade Launcher, Commissar - 90 points
Leman Russ Battle Tank - 150 points

Finish off the bases.

Highs: Got loads done (god save the queen!). The Leman Russ and Chimera were not actually in my planned 1500, so this will hopefully mean I'm going to overshoot my target.
Lows: I found painting all the troops to be a somewhat tiresome this month, and I've still got a few to go.

Veterans plus bus

03-05-2011, 21:56
Almost missed this month what with exams and work, but I put down the history essay and took up the paintbrush this evening to get a tank painted. I painted the second leman russ of three leman russ battle tanks and I finished off a Platoon command squad chimera earlier in the month, so pictures and points.

Units painted: Leman Russ Battle Tank and Platoon Command Squad Chimera
Points: 185+55= 240
Highs: Painted the russ in a nite.
Lows: Not much painting time, I wanted to make a start on platoon number two.
Dice roll: 4
Pictures: Apologies for quality, they are from my phone as my camera is being borrowed.

The Chimera in my cabinet.

The russ on its own.

And with the other russ, just to prove there are two.

Hope you like them, despite the rushed painting and poor picture quality, I can only apologise.

Wow, its been months since my last visit, looking at the names, it looks as if many have dropped out. My grandma has been stable as of late, and it looks like next years list will once again have me included. For those of you who have stayed and done great work, I salute you!

Badgobbla's Space Wolves

BACKGROUND/THEME: I don't really have a certain theme: I was just bored with painted red and black all the time, so the grey was a nice change.

5 Wolfguard Terminators

- 2 with power weapon and storm bolter

- 1 with power fist and storm bolter

- 1 with chainfist and storm bolter

- 1 with power fist and heavy flamer

3 of these are from the Assault on Black Reach boxed set, namely the ones with the storm bolters. I gave the Sergeant a greenstuff beard and hair (and a sort of wolf cloak). I also added a power sword from the Dark Angels-sprue to one wolf guard.

The other two terminators were straight from the normal terminator-box. Nothing special there.

The grey was achieved like thus:

- basecoat chaos black

- first coat: mix of 2/3 Shadow Grey and 1/3 Space Wolf Grey

- second coat: mix of 2/3 Space Wolf Grey and 1/3 Shadow Grey

- first highlight (edges only): pure Space Wolf Grey

- second highlight: mix of ½ Space Wolf Grey and ½ Skull White

For the yellow I used Iyanden Darksun highlighted up to a mix of Iyanden Darksun and Skull White.

The red is Mechrite Red als highlighted up to a mix of Mechrite Red and Skull White (very little Skull White, because otherwise you get pink).

The metals were very simple: just some Boltgun Metal with a wash of Badab Black.

The Terminator Honours and the Imperial Eagles were painted with Adeptus Battlegrey and highlighted up to a mix with Skull White.

For the bases I glued some pieces of sprue (cut to resemble pieces of ice crystals) on the base and then added some Polyfilla to resemble ice/snow in between the crystals. The ice/snow was then basecoated with Chaos Black after which I drybrushed it with Shadow Grey, Space Wolf Grey and finally Skull White.

The crystals were basecoated with Chaos Black and the first layer of paint was a mix of 1/3 Hawk Turquoise and 2/3 Ice Blue. Skull White was added bit by bit and the final highlight was almost pure Skull White.

Finally I painted some freehand on the shoulder pads and the weapons/gloves: my own chapter symbol (the wolf head), their names, some runes and some kill-counts.

Some battledamage, because I always feel like that's been missing from my Blood Angels.

And I still need to add some snow to the bases as well.

Highs: Starting a new project is always fun and these terminators were basically done as test models.
Lows: The amount of highlights that I'm doing and the fact that grey layers difficult on black makes this quite time-consuming. The battledamage also takes up quite some time (I've already started on my Grey Hunters), so this is gonna be a challenge.

As said before some Grey Hunters with a ride and something I've never tried before!

Pudsey098 Evil Sunz Orks : April 2011 (D6 Roll = 3)

Deff Dread with 2 x Kustom Mega-Blastas - 110
Ork Warboss Biker - 125

The Ork Warboss Biker is the standard Forge World model

The Deff Dread has a a different engine thanks to Manufactorum kit and parts from my bits box. The legs are combined from 2 sets of legs from the Kans kit to give the model more height as I find the original legs are too squat. The arms are from the battlewagon kit.

Nothing this month

Highs : Deff Dread conversion work.
Lows : My big boss for my army is only worth 125pts!

Well something small and something big is waiting in the wings…

Zark the Damned

Zark the Damned and the aggressive expansion of Waaaagh Kargrak: April 2011

TOTAL TO DATE: 2351 + 710 = 3061(!) Points

BACKGROUND/THEME: Waaagh Kargrak is a largely Goff Tribe currently undergoing aggressive expansion into Imperial space following the Green Kroosade.

This month, the Snakebites continue to contribute to the war effort, but don't overlook those sneaky Deathskulls trying to steal the attention!

20 Boyz with Nob, Bosspole, 3 Big Shootas = 150pts (Plus 10 boyz from last month's Snakebites for total mob size of 30)
15 Tankbustas with Nob, Bosspole, 2 Tankhammers, 2 Bomb Squigs = 250pts
Warboss with Power Klaw and Cyboar Chariot = 140pts (counts as Warbike and Attack Squig)
'Klanky', Warboss with Cybork Body, Mega Armour = 110pts
Big Squiggoth with Kannon = 60pts (From IA8 - used to transport the remaining Snakebites from last month)

BUILD/CONVERSIONS: The Snakebite boyz are a fairly standard mix of WHFB Orcs with Slugga arms, as per last time.
The Tankbustas for the most part are standard boyz with Rokkit Launchas, using the helmetted Stormboy heads I had spare. The Tankhammer boyz both use Biker torsos, the Tankhammers themselves converted from WHFB Orc Spears and maces. The Nob is from the plastic box, his gun is made from a Kombi Rokkit plus some spare rokkits from my Deff Dreads.
The Boar Chariot is mostly a standard chariot - the Cyboars are 'cut and shut' with the rear ends of Warbikes. The boss himself is the standard metal one with the beefier arms from the Black Reach boss.
Klanky is the FW Runt Bot with a spare Warbike Dakkagun mounted on his back.
The Squiggoth is a Stegadon with a howda made from plasticard and spare bits from a Trukk and Battlewagon, plus the other crew member from the Boar to steer it. Has an Iron Gob made from a Bike front wheel guard.

Nothing new to report really.

NEXT MONTH: Despite having reached my 3000pt goal due to having a prolific couple of weeks holiday, I will add some more stuff. Next time will be a bunch of Lootas, possibly some Bikes or Trukk boyz (heck, if I up my game I may get to 4,500 by the end of the tale!)

NOTE: After seeing the pics I have noticed a few details I missed on some of the models, will try remember to touch them up. Am still waiting for my custom bases to be cast up for the Chariot and Squiggoth (a member of my LGC is making some resin 'very large bike bases' for me)

Razormasticators 75th Logres Prime Ice Drakes IG

Total Painting for March: 220

1 Hellhound/ w options for a Banewolf/Devil Dog_(hull mounted Multi Melta): 145pts
2 Autocannon Teams & Heavy Bolter Team * these had some preliminary work done on before but were finally finished.: 75pts

As a bonus I also went back in and re-weathered my Macharius Vulcan from a previous tale from approx 2 years ago?

Plus a butt load of other WIP shots for next month which can be found in my log:

On than tanks: Standard White Undercoat, white dry-brush. Masterclass techniques, including charadon granite sponge weathering, as well as a burnt umber turpentine wash, pigment splashing & pigments. Etc.

The Infantry are my standard formula.
I used the grayscale wash method first, white prime, badab black, then white dry brush, asurmen blue for the coats, ogryn flesh for flesh areas. Went into details with Black, Codex Grey, Blazing Orange and Solar Macharius Orange, Shining gold, Chesnut Ink,
As well Vallejo Magic Blue for the main blue etc. The Rust is watered down Mig Pigments light rust.

Gravel Flock, 2 grains. Badab black, white dry brush, More white, static grass to taste.

Still to Do:
Dull cote

Highs and Lows:

Getting another tank done, as well as wrapping up 3 outstanding weapon teams.
The rust effects, I really like the mig pigments and think this is a great way to add some contrast to the Blue of the models and the white of the bases.
Re-weathering the Macharius… I think it looks great. And was way too shiny before.

Not getting the troop choice I had originally chosen to be this months entry done. But I have some major WIP’s going on.

Next Month:
Finish a troop squad, Working on another Vendetta, and a Leman Russ Demolisher.
Many other things as well.

Just to add to my post my targets for next month.

As my Company Command Squad was painted before the tale, I wouldnt have had an HQ to submit, so I want to get a Lord Commissar painted. Well, I have already painted him for next month. I also want to submit another platoon before the tale is over, so hopefully next months submission will be; The Lord Commissar and two 10 man squads.

The other objectives for the tale are to paint the third Leman Russ Battle Tank in the squadron and to get another two Valkeries painted up.

I would also like to add some Guard themed objective markers to my army, so any and all suggestions are welcome!

See you next month.

Comment time!

@mistaboff.. the Wyches look solid, and cohesive with the rest of the army.
a question... how do you do those thumbnails for your photos? is it a program or a by product of your hosting site? Educate me please!!!!!

@djc... wow it was a productive month for you my friend. good looking armor for sure. and I love the shields on the chimera and I really love the convincing tone of your flesh on the beastmen!

@bigcheese... and another productive month for you my friend. looking good, I really like the red vertical stripes on the russ's, they help to break up the grey. good stuff man.

@ Rutgar, nice work on the vine pattern. It looks really well executed from what I Can tell. Its a little busy, but i think that actually helps. Almost like a form of digital camo for the tank and helping to break up its silohette.

@badgobbla.. great looking wolves man, love the powerswords especially. clean and very well detailed work here.

@pudsey... the Warboss is bad arsed man... and i LOVE the conversion on the Deff Dread. The Waaagh goes on!

@Zark the Damned... thats some serious color coming off dem boys. And thats the first runt bot I have seen painted. Interesting color scheme. aint gonna miss him on the battlefield. A very productive month for you.

Good work everyone!

10-05-2011, 18:05
Hey guys,

Been a busy couple of weeks for me and I haven't had time to work on anything of my own for the Tale. Luckily for me, I built up some slack in my point totals previously, so I'm still on track and don't have to actually 'burn' one of my Jokers.

It's not Tale related, but I figured I'd post up a couple of pics of stuff I've been working on. Enjoy.

A Dreadnought that can be fielded either as an Ironclad...

... or a Venerable 'Rifleman' Dread

The Dread is actually a Master of the Forge who suffered an accident. Here he is before being encased inside a Dreadnought.

And his custom built Conversion Beamer (converted from a Thunderfire Cannon.)

10-05-2011, 18:56
Hey guys, if it's OK, I'll post my entry tomorrow. Just finishing off the bases, will take photos in the morning.

10-05-2011, 20:35
vic. cant wait to play the bray shaman. but you are under official warlock warning.

everyone else. great work. makes me feel jealous

10-05-2011, 23:39
Comment time:

@djc: Looks like another busy month for you, with a very impressive looking army shot. I think your Commissar is in a very appropriate pose, and the detailing (especially the shields) on your Chimera are brilliant as usual.

@bigcheese76: More good looking tanks to add to your the several you've already painted for the Tale. The Chimera's Tank Commander is a nice touch to help it stand out from your regular squad's Chimeras.

@Rutgar: Lovely work this month, particularly the freehand - it must have taken a lot of patience! I've also adjusted your JOKER total to one.

@Badgobbla: Great work all round. I couldn't really tell that some of them were AoBR Terminators, and the green stuff beard looks great too.

@Pudsey098: Your Deff Dread is so huge that I thought it was a Mega-Dread at first glance! Interesting choice of weapons, but it means that you can threaten anything at range too, which is always a plus. Your Warboss looks excellent too, very battle-worn. How was it to assemble your Warboss? I've been toying with picking up the FW bikers (Warboss and Nobz) for a long time, but wasn't sure about how fiddly putting them together would be.

@Zark the Damned: Wow, you can certainly paint a lot in one month! I've not seen a 40k chariot before, but always thought they'd be appropriate for Snakebites. My favourites are the Deathskulls and the purple squigs. I'm hoping to pick up a FW Runtbot at Games Day (if they've any available), so your's gives me a good idea of what my Deathskull colour scheme would look like on it...

@Razormasticator: Great work this month as usual. The weathering on you vehicles looks very good, and I love the scenic bases on your heavy weapons teams. Your Harker conversion is coming along nicely too. As for the thumbnails, I simply go to 'Manage Attachments' in the 'Additional Options' section (just below the text box) and add my pictures that way.

@Irondog: The benefits of getting ahead eh? I love the 'Rifleman' Dread (those Aegis Defence Line Quadguns sure get plenty of use in conversions), and the Master of the Forge and his retinue are gorgeous too.

@Fanny Crowbar: No worries, just post your entry when you've got it all sorted.

@everyone else: Please can you all try to post in the next few days? It would be a shame to start losing people at this stage, as most of us seem to be in it for the long haul now.

I've had quite a productive month so far, painting 7 of my 12 remaining Wyches, and basecoating my final 5 tonight. Hopefully I'll finish these in the next few days which will leave me free to assemble next month's entry and play some Dawn of War 2 (which I've had since the Christmas before last, but have been putting off until I got ahead with my painting).

I'm also very much looking forward to seeing the new Dark Eldar pre-orders later on day...

11-05-2011, 06:26
I'm also very much looking forward to seeing the new Dark Eldar pre-orders later on day...

Likewise, I'm going to have to re-jig my list I think. Will post my stuff later, thanks.

11-05-2011, 13:10
@ Irondog... oohh those are some gorgeous dark angels man. Love the rifleman dread.

@ Mistaboff... thanks for the comments. I know my painting looks a bit sloppy on camera, but its way more than table top standard so I am pleased with it.

11-05-2011, 13:13
@ misterboff: nice looking Wyches. Good luck on getting those last 12 painted, I guess I’d get bored as well after painting 50 guys like that…

@ djc: that is starting to look like quite a big army you got there. The theme is something that always appealed to me since 2nd edition when you could still take Beastmen in a Chaos army. The painting is looking nice and crisp!

@ bigcheese76: Nice looking tanks you got there. I never would’ve thought the Leman Russ was painted in only one night…

@ Rutgar: The freehand (I’m guessing it is a freehand) on the Wave Serpent is very nicely done. I can imagine it took quite a while to execute it properly?

@ pudsey098: Awesome looking Deff Dread and you got a point that the normal legs are a bit short. I really like the way you painted the metal plates on the Boss on bike.

@ Zark the Damned: Some very nice conversion work you got going there. I love the chariot/bike-conversion.

@ razormasticator: very impressive work on the weathering of your tanks. I’m just busy on painting battledamage on my Space Wolves and I know how hard it can be.

@ Irondog: that converted Conversion beamer looks stunning, I really love it. Your painting is also very neat and clean, someting you might have noticed from my models as well.

11-05-2011, 14:25
I agree with Badgobbla, I was remiss in commenting on that conversion beamer. Its hella cool.

And Thanks Badgobbla, like I said weathering properly is a labour of love. I think if its done well it really adds to a model's narrative.

11-05-2011, 16:09
yo guys,

have some more patience please, I'll have my share done this week I hope.
Stuff is looking pretty awsome this month guys, great there are still some die-hards out there.

12-05-2011, 12:52
Hi, great to be back again after some fun time with my family. Alas...it's sad to see, that there are so few 40K painters remaining. But what you have painted makes more than up for it!

@ mistaboff: Great Wyches, especially the Hekatrix.
@ djc: Great looking army and theme that you are constantly carrying throuh.
@ bigcheese76: Linking your Russ! (but then i might be biased, as it's grey!):p
@ rutgar: Great freehand on your Wave Serpent!
@ badgobbla: Seriously cool looking Space Wolfes!
@ pudsey098: What a spiffy spidery Killa Can!
@ zark the damned: Lovin' the Orks, especially the chariot!
@ razormasticator: Great weathering on the tanks...but what else should we expect from you.:)
@ irondog: Great painting as per usual! Loving the Rifleman Dread!

Am going to post some pics of my Dread and the last Tactical squad for the 2nd company later today

12-05-2011, 16:16
Hi there,
well another month has passed …and here is what I came up with.

Astartes Chapter: Space Sharks,

1 Space Shark Tactical Squad
1 Space Shark Dreadnought base

Just the normal Dreadnought with a lot of bits from the venerable Dread kit.
Most colours have 3 stages, either basecoat/highlight/wash or basecoat/wash/highlight.
Metal: Chaos/drybrushed Boltgun/Badab
Black: Chaos/Regal Blue
Grey: Charadon/Codex/Fortress/Badab
Sand: Bubonic Brown/Bleached Bone/Flesh Wash
Red:Mechrite/Blood/Blazing Orange/Badab
Yellow: Sunburst/White

Highs: Finaly, after more than a year the Dread is finished!
Lows: None

Already started on a demi squad for the 1st company and am nearing completition of the drop pod
and the 3rd Land Raider. A lot to do, but we’ll see how this month turns out.
And here the pics:

As i wanted the Dread to be more menacing i made him a bit higher. Looks like he is about
to get rid of the menace of his comrade.

This is the last tactical squad of the 2nd company. Will enjoy to finally paint the assault squads.

Had the sergeant lying around for ages and ebayed him the squad. But painting those is a pain...
...might take some time until i finish those.

As always Vimes that some solid, solid painting right there. I love the Head on Your Dread.. it gives it an interesting Narrative.

Oh and thanks for your kinds words, you guys make me feel like my efforts are worthwhile!

Dark Eldar 1500 points: April 2010

MONTHLY TOTAL: 149 POINTS (monthly target: 150 points)

The Kabal of the Bloody Tongue

Trueborn Dracon with Agoniser, blast pistol (52pts)
Kabalite Warrior (9pts)
2 Wyches with hydra gauntlets (30pts)
Hellion (16pts)
Reaver Arena Champion with power weapon (42pts)

Some kitbashing for the Arena Champion and the Trueborn. Otherwise straight out of the box.

I want my Dark Eldar to have a neon/Tron feel to them.
The armour is mostly dark blue (Necron Abyss) with light blue (Ice Blue) highlights. Some plates are painted silver.
Glyphs and hair are bright green (Scorpion Green) highlighted to white.
I'm painting the Dark Eldar's skin as I would bone. Dheneb Stone base with a Devlan Mud wash. Highlighted with more Dheneb Stone up to white.
The bases are bits of slate and sand. The slate is painted Codex Grey and drybrushed with Fortress Grey. The sand is painted Snakebite Leather and drybrushed with Dheneb Stone and then given a wash of Devlan Mud. Finally I added some static grass.

Highs: Fun painting these. Loved putting together the Trueborn. The new advance orders. Droooooool!
Lows: A sound thrashing has led me to reassess my army list, so I may have to do some catching up to accomodate my newer units and the shelving of others in my 1500. Oh and the shiny new stuff, can't forget the shiny new stuff.

Filling in the units, more Trueborn.

misterboff; nice looking wyches. I bet the army looks impressive as a whole.

bigcheese76; Good work getting a Russ painted in a night - certainly beats my glacial pace.

Rutgar; Excellent freehand on the serpent!

Badgobbla; Nice clean termis - I love the ice type effect on the power sword.

pudsey098; That's an imposing looking dread! Good stuff.

Zark the Damned; Another bucketload of boys from you! I like the boar chariot, works well with the rest of your snakebites.

razormasticator; Great weathering on the hound!

Irondog; Can only echo what others have said - great work!

Vimes; Excellent posing on the dread. Good to see some of the older mark marines too.

Fanny Crowbar; Between you, you misterboff and the new Dark Eldar models are making me want to start another army! great work.

OK, update-time:

Here's what I've been working on the last two weeks:

Lone Wolf with some wolf buddies (aka extra armor):

And then some Grey Hunters with a Wolf Guard:

I've seriously underestimated the time it takes to paint battledamage. I watched quite some tutorials on Youtube and they make it look so easy and quick. Unfortunately it doubles the painting time of one model...

But hey, at least they look cool.

@ Fanny Crowbar.. .gorgeous Dark Eldar, I think you have pulled off your "Tron" Look very convincingly. Nicely done. I especially like the pale skin color.

@ Badgobbala, wolves are looking excellent. I really like the bases as well. That hint of blue is really a good touch too.

Hi all, sorry about the lateness, but it's taken me ages to take some photos for some reason, comments to follow, maybe even today.

Perplexiti’s Space Wolves: 2010

BACKGROUND/THEME: Ragnar Blackmane’s Great Company.

UNIT(S): Vindicator.

BUILD/CONVERSIONS: Fully stock, I didn’t actually build it, my friend did then gave it to me.

PAINTING/BASING: Basecoated black, then a Fenris grey coat, with very heavy drybrushes of shadow grey then spacewolf grey. The metal bits were chainmail with a badab black wash.

STILL TO DO: I do want to dirty/damage it up a bit, I’m going to try out that sponge weathering method, but I want to practice it a bit first. I also will be doing markings and what not as well.

HIGHS AND LOWS: No lows again, were actually surprisingly easy to paint.

NEXT MONTH: Probably some more infantry, I’ve got some blood claws howling at me to do them.

Alright, comments time. As there's not many of us left I'll comment on everyone's work.

Page 1:

@misterboff: Great looking Deldar mate, very sinister.

@djc: Way to go man! You got a load done all right, and they're looking good.

@bigcheese76: Looking good, you're keeping everything consistent too.

@Rutgar: Awesome work, it must have been a pain doing all the vines though.

@BadGobbla: Wow, just fantastic mate. The runes are cool as too.

@pudsey98: That deffdread is win man! I love the pose, and isn't that Warboss mini just the bees knees, most of that forgeworld stuff is fantastic.

@Zark the Damned: Great stuff, awesome looking dethskulls.

@razormasticator: Cool work, love the bright highlights on the armour edges.

@Irondog: Awesome, just awesome. That dread is sweet.

Page 2:

@Vimes: Love me some old school, great tac squad. And that dread made me smile, looks really good man, love the mini diorama you've got going on with the marine on the ground.

@Fanny Crowbar: Wow! That Tron look you've got going is awesome, and the green hair really fits well.

Great work everyone! It's a shame there's so few of us left now, but oh well.

Cheers for the comments everyone, I'm quite surprised how many liked the Deff Dread, as he was a bit of fun

@ Mistaboff - The FW warboss is ok to assemble, as long as you remember to keep it in several components for ease of painting, I haven't build any of the FW nob bikes (yet) but they are rather expensive so I will be using them for characters rather than a squad. There not to fragile as the bikes tend to be lumps of resin rather than anything fiddly.

I will aim for comments tomorrow and hopefully some wip
