The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2010-2011 Month 8

Hello all,

This is the thread for the work you have done in April and after a week (to give folks time to post their work) it becomes the thread to post your comments on others work and discuss what you are painting in May.

Lots of folks dropping out.

The difference between people that fail and people that succeed in life is quite often that those who succeed were determined to do so ....
... and refuse to quit.

Well done to all of you still in this.

All the very best,
Harry

The story so far: (Big thanks to Braad for keeping up the table)

A WORD ON PHOTOS
640x480 seems to work best OR use thumbnails
Bigger than this results in the scroll bar of doom for many.

What is it all about?

The aim of The Tale of Painters (TOP) is to help motivate those involved to start and complete an army in the next twelve months.

We made a decision early on to split the Tale into two separate 'halves' one for 40K and one for Fantasy. (Just because of the numbers of people involved) They have continued to evolve in slightly different ways but this is how the Fantasy Tale works.

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months. Starting with their first post on the last day of September 2010 and finishing with their last post on the last day of August 2011. So we have this month, whilst everyone signs up, to collect, build, convert, undercoat and otherwise get yourself ready to go with the first work in progress starting in September.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

At the end of each month a new thread will appear for the painters to post your previous months painting and the rest of the painters to offer words of encouragement.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.
(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end ... it's harder than you think!)

Men and Boys

Because this is harder than you would think ... As last year rather than try and hold everyone to 200 points a month I have decided to allow folks to join in and paint only 100 points a month. Whilst the goal for many remains getting a 2000 point army painted in a year the original and ongoing intention of this whole thing was to encourage and support folks to get stuff painted and 1000 points is better than no points! As a result we have two catagories. 'Men' (painting 200 points/month) and 'Boys' (painting 100 points/month).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : No you are not too late. Yes you can still join in. Just post on this thread saying which army and how many points you intend to paint.

Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes (we are not here to tell you how and when to paint your stuff, it is great to get ahead) BUT we would like you only to post 200 points (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 200 points a month (200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc.) so as not to depress the hell out of those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example oif you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. We love background stuff. Write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

Q : Can Doi sign out?
A : No he can't.

Month 7 - Skeleton Regiment w/full cdo - Stirland State Troop
My mainstay unit in the army. Looks nice even if I was lazy with not adding any jaws. The Wight King that`s PiP is only there for the overall look.

Month 8 - Black Knights w/full cdo - Stirland Knight Order
I had planned on making these guys into Sacred Scythe order but I`m holding back on that idea in case I make some Blood Knights eventually.

And the army shot of what`s finished so far:

I've been busy painting minis for our WFRP campaign and as such there hasn't been a lot of progress on my Empire boys... I calculated my points though and it seems I'm so close to the finish line I just have to push my self into painting.

ARMY:
The Empire (boys)

UNIT:
Finishing touches to a couple of units.

HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs : Realizing that I just might finish this year...
Lows: Having absolutely no inspiration to paint Empire...

POINTS: ???

PLANNED FOR THIS MONTH: These chaps:

http://guildredemund.net/laurimaijala/minis2011/huhtikuu/viikko16/TotFPtodo.jpg

I decided to cheat a little though and there's going to be a small militia company for my boys army. And look at that! It's almost ready to rumble!

(These are the playing characters for our campaign that'll double as militia.)

Lizardmen:

Units: Slann BSB and oldblood

Cost: 300 + 145 = 445

Conversions: Wanted the old school slann but not the oldschool temple guard holding him up so i reversed the bottem of the model to make the saurus arms look like their are just part of the throne.

Highs and lows: I'm done!!! I might have taken a cheap way out but I'm done and can move on to orcs and goblins!

http://i534.photobucket.com/albums/ee350/Malorian/painting%20lizardmen/IMG_0758.jpg

Orcs and Goblins: (It's all for fun now)

Units: 42 squigs, 20 savage orcs, and a black orc big boss

Cost: 336 + 180 + 90 = 606

Conversions: Only thing is that I'm using some squig hoppers and a giant cave squg to make the squig unit look more interesting.

Highs and lows: After the pain it was to get my lizardmen done I can now relax and get the greenskins done so I can have the tournament list I want. Only low was that I had trouble deciding on a color for the squigs. Eventually went with grey because it would fit with he army and wouldn't make them stand out (aka get shot more).

Next up: 20 more savages and some night goblins.

Warseer being down for a week and a half did not exactly help with my motivation, although I found myself having an astounding amount of free time.

So Jokers for all of my stuff:
http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01810/three-jokers_1810788i.jpg

I could claim points for projects that are well on their way or even almost done, but I do not like doing that.
Should I not find my motivation again soon I might have to consider dropping out of the Tale.

Hey all, nice to be able to get in here again. I have had some rants and feverish nightmares since warseer was shut down but now im fine. Im .. fine. Yeeessss..............

Oh, wait. I have painted some minis!

290 points of Nurgle Marauders with Light armour, shield and full command.

40 of them i have still 10 more to paint but some genius at the ETC thought that 40 is the maximum size on units. I would like 50 as cap if there needs to be one. But hey, im glad anyways, i have finished 40 and they will work pretty fine.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Highs.. to get them finished and playing around with all the itty gritty stuff. Lows must be the decision to paint one color at a time on all minis before progressing to the next colour. I am used to paint batches of 5 at the most. It was... interesting for my nerves and really helped to build some more patience, or whatever you call it. Madness.. perhaps.

TOTAL POINTS: 2146p Wich is strange since i have only 10 dogs left and i have built a 2500p army. I must have missed something. Im to tired to think of what. Maybe you can try for me hehe?

Ok here they are.

ARMY:
Hordes of Khorne

UNIT:
Hell Cannon

HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs : This is what I call a fantastic model... one of the nicest I have painted thus far (I am not referring to the paintjob). Assembly was a bit of a pain in the *** but still, it looks nice when finished.
Lows: None really, I had a blast painting this beast!

POINTS: 205 pts

TOTAL POINTS: 1418 + 205 = 1623 pts. Back on track baby, yeah!! (note to Braad: I've bought back my jokers ;)).

PLANNED FOR THIS MONTH: Chaos Knights... possibly only the mounts. Will see what I can do!

I have exams on this month, so nothing is going to happen for the month. However, I am planning a large scale early Summer offensive for June, and have got lots of Dwarves (Hammerers and Miners) part-painted. WIPs for the Dwarves will follow at the weekend.

ARMY:
Lizardmen - Tzeentch/Raven Host theme
I know, it's an odd theme, but I have the fluff to make it work.

UNIT:
Salamander with extra handler
The Skink Priest Ress'k, the Inhabited

HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: I'm quite pleased with how they turned out, especially the Priest. For my first try at pupils, I think they actually turned out okay, even if they are white(well, who needs to see in the Chaos Wastes anyway?)
Lows: I still have to finish the bases(probably put on another coat of water effects), and I need to do highlights on the skin and scales of the Salamander pack.

POINTS: 210

TOTAL POINTS: 365 + 210 = 575, plus a few hundred if you let me count my models painted in other schemes

Dice roll: 5

I don't feel like the pictures really do the models justice, but they sure do highlight the spots where I missed something. XD I'm not the best painter by any means, but I figure I'll just get a tabletop level on my entire army done and then I can go back and do highlights and the like, excepting on centerpieces. The lizard on Ress'k's shoulder looks a lot cleaner in real life, the picture made it look pretty bad.

PLANNED FOR THIS MONTH: Saurus, lots and lots of em. I'll put up a regiment of 20 as soon as I finish it(already included some of them in the total)

Sorry I joined so late, I just got back into Fantasy, and have around 3k of Lizardmen to paint.

Whole army:
61 Skinks - 2 painted
57 Saurus, 2 full commands - 19 Saurus painted, about 10 more painted in an old scheme
2 Salamander Packs - one painted, another painted in an old scheme
2 Priests - One painted, another painted in an old scheme
3 Kroxigors - Two painted
10 Temple Guard - One painted
8 Cold Ones - One PIP in an old scheme... >_>
2 Heroes(Chakax model and Oldblood model) - Chakax in assembly, Oldblood assembled, and desperately trying to find a way to counterweight him
Stegadon - In assembly. Need to start pinning it so I can actually glue it

Background:
So that I don't make it a wall of text, the basic story is that Lord Ulha'up, a Slann who was a little loopy, wanted to preach to the younger races the Great Plan of the Old Ones. Two of his Priests left his service, Ress'k and Torique, thinking the plan to be foolish and crazy. Ulha'up left anyway, and passed over the communication lines with the other Slann, pronouncing him dead to Lustria. So they sent the two Priests as scouting parties to try and find him, and bring him back. On the way, Torique's company was murdered in the night by undead, and Ress'k unintentionally killed a peaceful envoy, while losing his Chief in the process, and some of his sanity. Ulha'up stopped at a human city, where the inhabitants directed him towards a city further north that would be interested in his preachings, and gave him a small escort to guide the way. The escort carried a trained assassin, who tried to murder Ulha'up in his sleep as a sacrifice to Khorne, but his guards foiled the plan, bringing the Lizardmen camp into a battle with the human escort. Reinforcements came in the form of heavy cavalry, routing the Lizardmen army. Ress'k soon saw the smoke, and came upon the campsite, found a dying Skink who told him what happened, and led his company north to the fleeing army. He found a large hill where they had begun to stand their ground, at an advantage against the cavalry, and as he directed his Skinks to open fire on the rear of the human infantry, his, the other Priests', and Ulha'up's mind were all invaded by a presence that named itself as the Old One Tepok. The so called Tepok blessed them with a supreme magical power, crushing his Khornite enemies, but tainting their minds with the power of Tzeentch, who was simply masquerading as Tepok. Tzeentch also blessed them with the ability to overcome the cold, and persuaded them to make a Temple-City in his honor in the Chaos Wastes, and to ally themselves with the Raven Host. Such they have lived there for many decades, waiting for a chance to kill the enemies of Tzeentch who calls himself Tepok in their minds.

Unfortunately I really haven't made any special conversions for this, I just wrote the fluff a few days ago. I was just hoping to convey it through blood and gore and othersuch things during painting.

@Red Skulls
The riders look great, but the horses look like they should have some more distinction from the armor and the rest of the model. Perhaps adding more blue to the armor, or a lighter blue?

Dice Roll: 2
Army:1k High Elves (Boys)
Unit: 6 Swordmasters, Full Command, Banner of Sorcerer and Amulet of Light
Build/Conversion: Straight out of the Island of Blood.
Still to do: Just the grass basing, like the rest of my High Elves.
Highs and Lows: Well, Highs are they're a lot of points. I guess somewhat lows is that they were almost done at the start of the month, and I only just finished them a few days ago. But I have reasons... as pointed out in my next post.
Points: 185
Total Points: 915
Next Month: Instead of Spearmen, I have decided to change up my list and go for a Repeater Bolt Thrower instead. I think it makes a smidge more sense than 15 Spearmen (who can't really benefit from their special rule).

Army:1k Beastmen (Boys)
Unit: 24 Gors, Full Command
Build/Conversion: Straight out of the box Gors.
Still to do: As on most of my Beastmen army, there's still a ton of little bits to do on the models. Someday I'll get around to doing all the little fiddly parts.
Highs and Lows: These guys were about half done before the month started, and I had to get the rest of them ready for a tournament. So I got them pretty much done in the end (or at least, the models I worked on, not sure about the rest of them!).
Points: 217

Dice Roll: 2
Army:2k Beastmen (Men)
Unit: 6 Centigors, Full Command, Throwing Axes, 6 Bestigors and Slugtongue
Build/Conversion: Centigors are straight out of the box. Slugtongue is a mix of a Gor body, the Empire wizard arms, the staff is made out of an Ungor spear, his head is a skull from the Gor kit, and then add greenstuff!
Still to do: Nothing really! These models are 99% complete. Just have to add some flock to Slugtongues base.
Highs and Lows: The highs is that these guys are a lot of points, and I got them all finished. None of this leaving little bits and pieces left over for later. That's the good thing I think about painting a small amount of models, you don't put them aside thinking you'll get around to doing the small bits later. I also got them ready in time for the tournament (not the complete army... but everything was at least painted, but not finished). The Bestigors are not pictured... mainly because I can't remember which 6 are the ones I painted (they all look the same, so I'll post them when I do the next army picture).
Points: 197 for Centigors, 72 for Bestigors, 190 for Slugtongue
Total Points: 1636.5
Next Month: Really finish Taurox this time. He didn't make the cut in my tournament army (Not really suited for him), but certainly I want to finish him off.

UNIT:
BSB and 1/2 a Keg(Anvil) of doom. I also finished the basing on my miners.

HIGHS AND LOWS:
So I really like what I've been working on. This BSB is one of my favorite GW minis ever. Same with bugman, and the Keg has been a nice project. Lows have to be my impending wedding and my work on my master's thesis. I'm excited for both, but its left me with about 2 hours a week worth of painting time. That just isn't enough.

POINTS: We can call it 200 pts

TOTAL POINTS: 1575 + 200 =1775?

PLANNED FOR THIS MONTH: I want to finish the Keg and I've started on some very special plastic hammerers.....

Here's the keg with Mr. Bugster himself
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v35/Confessor_Atol/Dwarfs2011/P1010255.jpg

And my BSB. Looking at this picture, I can still see a couple of details I need to finish.

Army: Skaven (Boys)

Unit: 20 clanrats with full command, Spears and shields

Background/Theme: ratty rats

Still to do: Some flock on the bases that looks like dead shrubs and twigs

Highs and Lows: A little faster and a little better than the last 20. I missed comments back last month with the site down, but think I agree that they are turning out a little dark, both the painting and the photos. I think I'll adjust them a little brighter.

Points: 120 (for a total of 230 - wahoo!)

Next up: more clanrats - or perhaps gun crews

Double Joker for me this month for my High Elves and Lizardmen. Might be able to retract one if I get my Stegadon finished before the end of the month, but I am not going to rush things.

@Braad: I couldn't help but notice that I've been put down for a Joker in the table for my High Elves last month. I posted them on the 23rd, just before Warseer was taken down :shifty:

Comments!

Red Skullz: When I just saw the conversion for that beast I was worried, but now that it's painted it looks a lot more fitting.

doc_cthulhu: Well those 3 models that you painted look really good. I hope you can fing the inspiration to finish the rest.

Malorian: About time you brought your model count back up, now all you need to do is stop painting like crap!

Kaos: Those look amazing! I can only imagine how long it took to freehand all of that

Matrim_Cauthon: Model and base look great. Just don't aim that thing at me ;)

Purplebeard: Funny looking knights. The horses could have used a bit mroe detail work though. I know exams keep you busy but maybe you could sneak in a character to avoid the joker.

Chicken Pig: I'm pretty sure the left one is converted... or beat up an ogre and took his stuff :p

Fechik: That's still a good number of models. I like how you mix them up so that they aren't all straight on the base.

Ego Ninja: Good looking models for all three armies. The engineer really shows off how clean the painting is.

DarkAngelsG: Good to have you in the tale.

someone2040: Interesting slugtongue conversion. Really fitting.

Tonberry: Too bad you lost the model but the replacement looks great!

Rutgar: The lord looks very plain compared to the prophetess, this is because black doesn't lend itself to shading. You can add shading though with grey highlights.

Confessor_Atol: Still a few details on the bsb left but he is looking good. That's a great limited edtion model to have.

gsmc: If the bases were just done in a different color it would help a lot. Maybe to a trial with grass on the base.

@doc_cthulhu: Very realistic figs, dig it!

@Malorian: Love that squiq horde :D OH and thanks for the comment, I assume it`s the Hellsteed you`re thinking about.

@Kaos: insane stuff, in a good way!

@Matrim_C: very nice Hellcannon :)

@Purplebeard: Fantastic minis mate, I envy you!

@Chicken Pig: Great job on some underrated minis!

@Fechik: Basing is great!

@Ego Ninja: What an effort mate!

@DarkAngelsG: Great background story :)

@someone2040: clean job on those elves but the BoCs rule the day imho!

@tonberry: dig that scheme!

@Rutgar: Really like that scheme on the Damsel!

@Confessor_Atol: Love that theme!

@gsmc: gritty is nice ;)

Thought I'd finish commenting on the other entries:

@Red Skulls - The riders look great, but the horses look like they should have some more distinction from the armor and the rest of the model. Perhaps adding more blue to the armor, or a lighter blue?

@Cthulhu - Great job! I really like the stubble on the left guy and the skin tones are really good.

@Malorian - Wow, those are some bright O&G. XD I think the teeth would look better if they had a sepia or similar wash, they just look too white for O&G, and I think it would help the Squigs to look less single-tone.

@Kaos - Wow. That is all.

@Matrim - I think some source lighting on the middle guy could create a good effect. Your choice, otherwise a good job.

@Purplebeard - I think maybe washing the brown-haired Gnome's beard a bit, to give it some depth, would be good. And the horses would look nice with slightly lighter manes than their bodies, horses don't frequently have manes that are the same shade as their body.

@Chicken Pig - They look good. I personally would dull down their weapons and armor some, as well as their claws, but that's just me, I like my stuff to be weathered(something I picked up from 40k I think).

@Fechik - Nice. The cloth especially looks nice, it has depth.

@Ninja - There's only one pic, so I can't be sure, but I think it would look nice if you put some Devlan or Badab washes in the recesses of the bone, to shade the cannon a bit. I think some source lighting could have a cool effect on your Engineer, too.

@Someone - My only complaint is that you used the blue and white scheme. It's a nice scheme, just overused. :P The Beastmen are nice and original though, I really like the red skin.

@Tonberry - You're not welcome here anymore. ;P

@Rutgar - I think some dark grey highlights on the black cloth would look good, and some shading on the white. Right now(congrats on getting a clean white though) it looks too monochrome.

@Confessor - Haha, that's an oddly colored horse. Good job. On the BSB, maybe you should paint that book on his banner? I dunno, it just looks like it needs more on it.

@gsmc - They convey the look of underground filth very well. Nice job.

Comments!

Red Skullz- Wow, brilliant hellsteed, looks really scary! And I have allways been a fan of using Empire+Undead for an army. I have a friend that did that and i like it alot!

doc_cthulhu- Very nice those finished models, i like the skin especially.

Malorian- I gotta say, I am more impressed with the speed you paint than your quality and i think i can say this to you without making you feel bad because man.. How do you do it?! You and Harry can start painting for one year and the winner gets the others models painted that year hehe.. SHould be a couple? :P

Kaos-Dude, get working on them movementtrays! Damn you!

Matrim_Cauthon Very nice Hellcannon but i suspect that they are less yellowish in real life? Looks like the camera has some effect on white balance?

Purplebeard- I better not show those mounted dwarfs to my dad. He would find your adress and steal them! He have been pestering me about adding cavalry to his beloved dwarfs but so far i have refused.

Chicken Pig- Very nice work on them classic Dragon Ogres!

Fechik- God job but heck.. those bases must have been a pain to paint?

Ego Ninja- I like those three models you painted. The Giant wants a tattoo or something on the belly tho i hear him say. Can you hear it? :)

DarkAngelsG- Grey lizards? Reminds me of my Iguana when it died, it became grey since it lost its colours. But since it has with the heat to do it makes sence when they are out in the snow hehe. Cool idea!

someone2040- Them High Elves, they need the bases finished but they look sweet so far! And the beastmens looks really nice and especially the Shaman.

Tonberry- Cool Wizard, love the colours. Army looks very nice!

Rutgar- Damsell looks ace!

Confessor_Atol- All those kegs makes me thirsty! BSB looks grim an cool especially thanks to the skulls.

gsmc- Dirty dirty rats. I like them. But i like them more when they are roasted. Mmm.. roasted rat...

Well.. was that it? Seems like we are very few now?

Anyway i have finished all my models for a 2500p army and at the moment im working on the Movementtrays. Will post everything at the end of the month after the tournament! Will add some pics from there too i hope, if i do not forget my camera that is. I am good at forgetting things.

Cheers-Kaos

I am NOT a high quality painter, and those squigs show it.

I just paint to numbers and then wash. I'd rather have more models painted than one done very well.

Hello,

I'm back. After Riz's entry above, I thought I'd start with a Red DP too :D

Not going to bother with too many remarks on it, finally got the hang of the painting red thing (I think), and the base is kind of where I'm going with the whole rivers of blood thing, there is still a bit of tweaking to do, I''ve run out of green stuff for now though...

Points: I'll chuck on a few upgrades, so lets call it 350 pts, for a running total of 1325 points.

Sorry folks,

For some reason that week or so without warseer started the ball rolling on a massive decline in interest in warhammer for me. I'm just amazingly busy and doing all sorts of other stuff which has led me to totally forget about all things warhammer (the latest being that I've joined a ceilidh band!).

Anyway, the long and short of it is that there's a joker this month and I really can't see anything groundbreaking happening next month either. This is made even more irritating because I'm only 6 trolls and a pile of shamans (shamen?) away from my "finished" army. Hopefully inspiration will strike soon, but this could be the sad end for sssk's goblins.

Indeed most of my warhammer is going to be hitting ebay soon :(... though I think I should have about enough space for a bunch of little green guys to hide out until my interest creeps back.

keep up the good work guys, it's been a pleasure painting with you, and I'm still loving the models everyone is producing. Keep an eye on the horizon for sssk's triumphant return...

I never understood this kind of thing. Especially when it comes to greenskins! That's just parting with a bit of your soul, isn't it? Just store them somewhere, and get them going again some other time, or let them rest in peace, but not sell them off to some crazy little kid who will just break them and stuff...

I just updated my list with the latest book. Looks like I now painted less then before.
Darn that.

Anyway, I painted a lot, but not my orcs. My house is now partially green. Yeah... I just can't stop painting green.
So, joker for me this month.

Army - 2000pts+ Ogre Kingdoms

Units - Gorger and Tyrant

Points - 358pts (continuation from last month)

Highs/Lows - Both were a joy to build, convert and paint - really had fun with them, especially the Werewolf gorger. The only slight low was trying to finish these two off whilst moving house.

Some sick things again this month. Personal faves are the SICK unit of Kaos, and DeadintheHead's watery base looks REALLY cool too!

Anyways, I haven't been very nice with updates. I can't show anything for this month, but I am going to go for the two-month big update again. Next month I will show quite a lot of things and those are going to be a lot of points in total! I will keep under wraps what it will be for now! ;)

PAGE 1
Red Skullz: Cool looking converted hellsteed. Army looks like it's coming along really well.
doc_cthulhu: well, perhaps you didn't get much painted, but those Militia look amazing and full of character.
Malorian: Lizardmen look good, and congrats on finishing. Orcs and Goblins look awesome. Grey works really well on the squigs.
Kaos: Stunning unit of Marauders you've got there.
Matrim_Cauthon: Great looking Hellcanon.
Purplebeard: Cool looking unit of Gnomish Knights.
Chicken Pig: Your Dragon Ogres are nicely painted, like the red lower bodies.
Fechik: Nice use of mixing Plague Monk and new Clanrat bodies. Definately looks good.
Ego Ninja: Hellcannon looks great. The giant has a nice smooth skin tone, I like that. Warlock engineer also looks good.
DarkAngelsG: You've chosen an interesting colour scheme. Perhaps a bit of wash and highlighting would bring out the colours a bit more. Lizards are certainly gonna be cold though... don't deal well with cold weather.
Tonberry: The new mage is painted really well, pity that you have lost the original.
Rutgar: Some great looking brettonians. Get them based and they'll look even more amazing.

PAGE 2
Confessor_Atol: The keg of doom and BSB are looking great, good job.
gsmc: Nice dark and dirty looking Skaven.
Rik a Kadrin Kazad: Great looking Daemon prince.
DeadInTheHead: Another awesome Daemon Prince. Really digging the Dragon Lord as well, especially the water on the base.
Fabius Bile: Great take on the Gorger, and the Tyrant looks good as well.

REPLIES
@Malorian: I certainly can't take credit for the original idea. But think the model has certainly turned out well in the end.
@DarkAngelsG: Well, it's teal not blue. Would it be acceptable if I said I'd rather use Jade Green, except my Vallejo replacement is just so liquidy I can't use it?

Pg.1

@Red Skullz (VC): Certainly a weird and horrific creation. Very gory. The knight at the back of the infantry block looks great, as does the drummer with no jaw.
@doc_cthulhu (Empire): A mighty contribution to rival mine (lol). Good hunters, I like them.
@Malorian (Lizardmen): Good, bright colours - creates a good illusion of 'wetness' on the frog. Not sure about Slann with no retainers. I think he needs something extra. Just not sure what.
@Malorian (O&G): Big contribution. Looking good.
@Kaos (WoC): Great stuff. Very original use of models and metallic paint effects.
@Matrim_Cauthon (WoC): Gorgeous figures. Beautiful basing.
@Chicken Pig (WoC): Bold and bright, but not too bright. Really like these guys.
@Fechik (Skaven): Nice bases as always. Good choice of colours. Wise move to get lots done now, gives you a bit more wriggle-room later on (if you need it).
@Ego Ninja (WoC): Dark and edgy. A very different look to the same model as Matrim_Cauthon, but it works well.
@Ego Ninja (O&G): Good stuff. I like the ragged trousers!
@Ego Ninja (Skaven): Nice figure - the painting on the robes is suitably dark and grim.
@DarkAngelsG (Lizardmen): Congratulations on getting involved! Interesting winter Lizzie theme. I've never seen that one before!
@someone2040 (HE): Clean and crisp painting. Can we have an army shot next month please? :)
@someone2040 (BoC): More great figures.
@Tonberry (HE): Your army is coming together nicely now.
@Rutgar (Bretonnians): Characters - good effort. I like them.

Pg.2

@Confessor_Atol (Dwarves): Good to see another Dwarf still in this. The unit fillers are a great idea. The cork basing adds to them too.
@gsmc (Skaven): The gritty, dirty image is perfect.
@Rik a Kadrin Kazad (DoC): The dark red is just right.
@DeadInTheHead (DoC): Good work.
@DeadInTheHead (HE): 600pts is a fair whack! Subtle sea effects and lovely painting.
@Fabius Bile (OK): Brilliant purple Ogre! He's looking great now that he's done.

Replies:

@Malorian: Er - the horses have had one drybrush coat. The riders are a bit over half done, the horses a bit less than half done.
@Red Skullz: Thanks.
@DarkAngelsG: Yep - the horses are barely started - it was more of a try-to-shoehorn-something-in this month sort of thing. Overall the models are only about half done.
@Kaos: The big question for me is - get a couple/few more and make two deccent units, or sell a few, keep one big unit, and get something cheaper for the second unit? Decisions, decisions, decisions....
@Sssk: Stay with us. You can do it!
@someone2040: Cheers - they'll be done by the end of June.

DarkAngelsG: You've chosen an interesting colour scheme. Perhaps a bit of wash and highlighting would bring out the colours a bit more. Lizards are certainly gonna be cold though... don't deal well with cold weather.

If you read the background, I stated that Tzeentch, with the guise of Tepok, blessed them with the ability to survive in the Wastes, at a cost that was unknown to them(their servitude to their most hated enemy).

What washes would you suggest? I was thinking a wash might dull down the color too much, I want them to still blend in a bit with the bases, but I have an... Interesting way of applying washes. :P And I'm aware that I need to highlight. At this moment I'm just horde painting them all, because I have around 3750 points to paint, and I'll add highlights after the army is done(with the exception of centerpiece models).

@Someone
Of course it's acceptable, they're your models! It was just a piece of advice, and that's a perfectly good reason. Maybe you should get some GW/Reaper paint in that color? Ah, your choice. It's easy to nitpick models when you don't know what they look like on the table, and I tend to be hypocritical about that. I mean, they look pretty darn cool as is.

@Purplebeard
Aah, okay. Well, for half done they're not bad at all. I can appreciate doing that.

If you paint 27 more points (27!, in 4 months!), then you'll shine forever in the 2010-2011 ToFP season boyz league hall of fame!

Isn't just shifting to boys kinda cheesy? :P
Yup. Cheesy as you like. :D
From the day this whole thing started I was always as slack as you like about the "rules". My take on things is ... there are enough rules in real life without enforcing them on stuff folks are doing for fun. The idea was only ever to help motivate folks to get stuff painted. Not add more stress to anybodies life. As a result I have always let folks join in, drop out join back in again, post when they had something to post even if they had not posted for months. The "rules" were/are more guidelines.

Has this helped you get some stuff painted? Yes.
Have you painted almost 1000 points of stuff? Yes.
Have you contibuted to the success of others by posting your stuff and with your positive comments of support? Yes
Have you earned your place on the final table for the class of 2010-2011? Yes.

... and who knows you may still find some more time before the summer is over to paint a bit more for this army?

Emperor Norton and Dark Apostle have the right take on things. They might of run out of jokers but they are not dropping out they are going to try and get more painted. BUT even if they do not I still would not like to see folks dropping out at this stage who have brought so much to the Tale this year. It is better to see folks limp home having used 4 jokers and come up short on the points than not see them make it home at all. If you are still in it now ... stick around whatever ... folks have still painted the best part of an army and we have all shared in those successes and the motivation that comes from then being shared with us.

If we reach for the stars we might not get one but we won't end up with a handful of mud either. :D

*Sniff* Brings a tear to the eye.

At least you didn't say 'They may take our lives, but they'll never take...OUR FREEDOM!' :D

Very stirring, I may just go and paint my Stegadon.

I nearly thought you would say "OUR PAINT!"

I wanted to say something interesting, but I think Harry just said it all.
Though I might add one thing:

If you reach for the stars, you'd better wear oven gloves, just in case you'd manage...

I'm not late or anything :shifty:.

ARMY: Ogre Kingdoms (Boys)

UNIT: Ogre Tyrant

BUILD: Between adoring the OK book cover artwork and thinking the stock great weapon tyrant pose looks ridiculous (great weapons are for smashing not poking!) I set about converting mine. The neck and arms have been reposed, the head of the hammer replaced with something more imposing, the gut plate altered and the horns on the back added.

PAINTING: The only things different from my normal paint scheme are the gut plate (Dwarven Bronze, several Ogryn Flesh Washes and then a Mithril Silver highlight) and the horns on the back (Calthan Brown base and then successive highlights with Khemri Brown, Dheneb Stone and Dheneb Stone + Bleached Bone)

POINTS: 314

TOTAL POINTS: 770 (should buy back two jokers)

guess it's gonna have to be a belated joker from me.

not got much done at all, been on holidays and had RL creep up on me. i'm hoping to be able to post something for ToFP before the end of this month, got a trebuchet near enough done and i'm struggling through some knights errant very slowly.

can i also just add congrats to all of you that have posted this month, the effort put in by all of you is both inspirational and outstanding and there is no way i'd have painted what i have so far without the inspiration that most of you have given me

Sorry for the lateness, I've had a serious case of the no motivations last month. But here's my stuff!

Dawi : 2000 POINTS (MEN)

UNIT: 11 Dwarf Warriors.

BACKGROUND/THEME:

BUILD/CONVERSION: No conversion, just stock BfSP models.

PAINTING: For the metal, chainmail, with a badab black wash then a chainmail drybrush, Tallern flesh with an ogryn flesh wash and a dwarf flesh drybrush. Really quick paint job on these fellas.

BASING: Will be done the same as the rest of the Dawi, for now is just GW sand painted black.

STILL TO DO: Just the basing.

HIGHS AND LOWS: No real highs this month, they really aren’t that nice of a model, and I struggled to finish them.

POINTS THIS MONTH: 88

TOTAL POINTS: 1618

Warriors:

Lizardmen : 2000 POINTS (Men)

UNIT: CARNOSAUR! (Apologies for the caps, but I feel he needed a surprise intro)

BACKGROUND/THEME:

BUILD/CONVERSION: No conversion at all.

PAINTING: Basecoated white, Skin was painted bleached bone, then washed with ogryn flesh, then drybrushed with white. The scales were based black, then knarloc green, with drybrushed with camo green.

BASING: A big piece of bark painted up like a rocky outcrop, basically just to keep him above his dinner.

STILL TO DO: Just need to finish the basing.

HIGHS AND LOWS: No lows, I love this mini. He doesn’t do too great in my group, lots of cannons and repeater bolt throwers about, but when he gets into a unit he carves up.

POINTS THIS MONTH: 210

TOTAL POINTS: 1133

Alright, comments time. As there's not many of us left I'll comment on everyone's work.

Page 1:

@Red Skullz: Looks awesome mate, great use of empire bits too.

@doc_cthulu: Good work man, nice skin.

@Malorian: Great work Mal, love the BSB on the Slann. Really nice OnG too, great colour for the squigs.

@Kaos: Oooo, Nurgley. Awesome shields man, really nice freehand work.

@Matril_Cauthon: Nice, very well painted hell cannon mate.

@Purplebeard: Hehe, great stuff. Keep the old school rolling man!

@Chicken Pig: While I'm not a fan of those minis, they look beautifully painted mate, great work.

@Fechik: Really great looking rats, did you paint the cobbles on the bases?

@Ego Ninja: Another great hellcannon, that bone looks nice. Superb giant, looks really cleanly painted too. Well done on that warlock too, I'm still blown away by the quality of the sculpts from that box set.

@DarkAngelsG: Nice skinks and salamander mate, they look cool grey.

@someone2040: Very well painted swordmasters man, they fit right in with the rest of the unit. Nice herd, that red skin is very nice. More great beasts, well done man.

@Tonberry: It's a shame to hear about your lost mini, no doubt he'll turn up now you've finished another one! Mk II looks great though.

@Rutgar: Nice brets, although I feel like the lord needs some more colour on him, something a little bright to contrast all the black maybe.

Page 2:

@Confessor_Atol: Awesome Dwarfs, such character man, well done.

@gsmc: Nice dirty rats, I think you're right they could be a little brighter though.

@Rik a Kadrin Kazad: Cool DP, nice use of an ogre head too.

@DeadInTheHead: More red daemony goodness(or evilness) nice man, cool dragon too.

@Fabius Bile: That were-gorger is sweet, and I love the mortar flagon your tyrant has.

Page 4:

@Doi: Cool tyrant, nice stripy pants and that's one intimidating hammer all right.

Great work everyone! And keep it up!

So I'm gonna need some advice here... what happens if say the army I've been painting for the tale just got a new release... and it doesn't inspire me to play the army? I'm not ranting, it's just a personal take on the new book. Do I drop out of the tale or just use jokers until I decide which army I really wanna paint and play with? Coz I'm the sort that paints stuff to play games with.

Would appreciate some advice to help clear my head on this one. Thanks guys!

While I'm sure there will be others who will tell you to stay in the Tale, my oppinion is as follows.
The Tale is here to encourage people to paint their armies, not force them too.
You shouldn't feel like you're forcing yourself to paint your models against your will.
So I'd say, stick with the jokers. Maybe you'll get a bout of inspiration and you'll jump right back in. Maybe not. But at the end of the day, all you're missing out on for completing the tale is just a pat on the back for completely painting your army.

That's just my oppinion. I wouldn't want to force myself to paint stuff I don't want to. Force myself to paint stuff because I'm lazy - that's ok. Force myself to paint models I don't really want to paint? Not so ok.

thanks guys for the advice.

@Malorian: Well, that's both true and untrue to some extent... I'm close to finishing an army that can be legally fielded, but with the new book and in the context of 8th ed, I'm not sure if that's the army I want to field. Still, what you say has a very big pull factor.

@someone2040: Thanks for that! It actually makes sense... though it feels like a big waste to just let it all go now. That's why I'm torn, I guess.

I'll take some time to mull over it. The rises in price and the recent cut-off from maelstrom has made me have to think really carefully what I want to collect. It won't be multiple armies... probably just one now, so that's why I'm taking my time to figure out what I really wanna do in what I consider a very meaningful hobby.

@Braad: Thanks for that! In that case, I guess I just have to do this:

Great efforts everyone, btw. Especially to perplexiti for getting so many Dwarves done.

@juicytomatoes: That is one creepy joker man. I think that guy might give me nightmares for some time to come :( (lol :D ).

LAST THING - I've decided upon my entry for ToFP 2011-12. I've built up something of a collection of '80s Citadel & Marauder Chaos Knights and managed to get the '80s Chariot, so I'm going to do WoC. I'm also going to try something different and go for a white undercoat as a base on them.

Well done to everyone who got stuff painted, and lots of encouragement to those who didn't but are struggling on. Here's some specific feedback:

@Red Skullz - very original units, nice and gory!
@doc_cthulhu - nice little unit, keep on going.
@Malorian - Well done for finishing off the lizardmen, your slann looks very contemplative. I like your grey squigs.
@Kaos - great looking unit, I love the colour scheme and think it's very well executed, particuarly the shields.
@Matrim_Cauthon - Wow. Just wow. You've really done the hellcannon justice.
@Purplebeard - I love seeing old miniatures like those - thanks for putting them out there.
@Chicken Pig - More classic minis! Love it.
@Fechik - Suitably skaven looking, will look even better with added pestilence.
@Ego Ninja - Another good looking hell cannon, and an imposing giant.
@DarkAngelsG - Nice alternative take on lizardmen. Great basing.
@someone2040 - 2 Greatlooking units with fab banners.
@Tonberry - Lovely painting, well done. The fabric is impressive.
@Rutgar - Good use of colours, and natural looking horses.
@Confessor_Atol - Keg of doom! Love it.
@gsmc - Nice warm colours, very organic.
@Rik a Kadrin Kazad - Good conversion, makes for an unusual DP.
@DeadInTheHead - Bold colours, and brilliant bases. Like it a lot.
@Fabius Bile - Lots of character and movement in the minis, well done.
@Doi - Lovely smooth painting.
@perplexiti - Good additions to the army, all looking very together.

According to my stats, you're already at 936 and 923 points for both armies, so no need for jokers.

I just made mine and had to think about the same thing.

Tactically the shaman is suicide and really I think the lobba is a waste.

You want to get this guy into combat right away and not holding back shooting off weak templates for an effect that doesn't even matter most of the time.

Just take a howda and Waaagh!!! :D

Cheers Braad, I've got three on the go, Empire is at 688.

I'm building the forest goblins from the box as a howdah, with a removable shaman at the front as an option. I'm also trying to construct an alternate howdah with a night goblin vibe, but it's not going too well so far...

I was thinking about the same thing, and finally planned to go for howdah only. Then a friend said that goblins never can have enough ramshackle machines of war and contraptions to bring hurt and death.
So now it has a lobber.

Though I have to admit that a great shaman atop such a beast spewing forth great balls of green flame still sounds attractive.

I'm just too fluffy, causing me to make bad tactical decisions all the time!

And of course by that I mean I'm too much stuck on background stories, not that I'm a teddybear.

Comments - before the site goes down again

Red Skullz - I like the orders for the knights - that retention of identity in undead is always a good thing

doc_cthulhi - multi-purpose painting is hardly cheating

Malorian - massive painting again!! I must say though that Iím not fond of the drab Ďstealthí squigs. I think you should doll them up with red lipstick and some bright eye-liner - then people would really think twice about targeting them

Kaos - those are very fine looking marauders - really great shield work. Patience is useful and worth developing, just not much fun.

Matrim_Cauthon - thatís a great job on the hell cannon

Purplebeard - the sturdy dwarves and ponies make fine knights - for stunties

Chicken Pig - very nice painting. Iíve always thought the legs are posed funny on these models.

Fechik - nothing like saving the pus and snot till the end

Ego Ninja - three very nice models. The smooth belly of the giant would provide an admirable target for either of the other two models

DarkAngels G - its a good colour scheme

someone2040 - lovely shiny elves, and that is a lot of beastment

ton berry - god replacement mage

Rutgar - I like the three characters, as others have pointed out a little more highlighting/contrast would improve

Confessor_Atol - yes, good models well painted. Based on the experience of others you might want to temper your hopes for more painting time when wedding and masters transition into marriage and career.

R...Kazad - great job, I especially like the wings

Dead in the Head - must leave you internally conflicted to paint something so evil and something so good. Maybe thatís why painting the dragon was less fun than you expected.

Maglok - on shifting to boys from men. At forty I realized I was really just 4 10-year olds so I wouldnít worry about the category.

DOI - nice conversion - although the hammer will only be in balance on the warhammer world

Perplexiti - thatís nice dwarf painting considering you find them uninspriring. youíre work on the carnosaur really brings out the feline grace of the sculpt. I like it

Braad - fluff and bad tactical decisions are half the fun - and surprisingly realistic if you look at the history of warfare.

thanks for the comments back. I'll tweak the look of the bases and painting until they look even rat-rattier-rattiest.

@Braad: Hope you'll get me back in the game pointswize as well
(well, on the list that is - the points I've seen to myself... Did the calculation for my general back in the month 6 thread (145pts) and the daemon prince this month (300 pts) is for month 7,8 and 9.).

I've been lazy with comments the last months, so here it goes for everybody:

@Redskullz: Great use of a Blood Bowl Mummy, a big dangerous vamp on a horse that can fly..

@Doc_Chtulu: Like the huntsmen, are those things rabbits in their hands?

@Malorian: Clever thing of that tiny frog to hide behind that smileyface banner, nobody will probably attack that cheerful smile :)

@Kaos: Think I've already commented on those insanely good painted bretonnian marauders with their cool shields..

@Matrim_Cauthon: Great hellcannon, does it work in games or is it too unstable?

@Purplebeard: Like the minis. Mayebe one of them should dye their beard purple?

@Chicken Pig: Nice paintjob on those.

@Fechik: Like the bases. Also a great colorshceme on the skaven themselves.

@Ego Ninja: Great hellcannon, but where's the crew? You should not let it stand alone with nobody watching over it... Love the Giant, nice skin on it and great contrasting colors on the clothing. The skaven is pretty darn cool as well.

@DarkAngelsG: Not sure about the grey skin, but a wash might do some wonders. Maybe asuremen blue ot the classic alround devlan mud... Just to get som tones / shades into the grey.

@someone2040: High elves: Insane.. Great work. Beasts: Nice, great banner. Beasts2: Nice models, great scheme, muscles really stands out. Left hand on the shaman could maybe use something to seperate it from his cloak, but great work on him too...

@Tonberry: Nice work, I'm not sure if it's just the picture not showing it, but the model would probably be insane if you did some gem effecting on the "orb" (green ball thing) in the staff aswell. Or paint it warpgate'ish. Or maybe even paint it as a planet... :D

@Rutgar: Thats one of my favourite knight models, hunched in his cloack on the horse with the axe that way, as if returning from a crusade.. Great use of colours on the lady in red.

@Confessor_Atol: Nice work, like the beerchart.

@gsmc: A bit blurry to look at, but it's not the picture.. Think maybe a better contrast between base and model would do the trick (some light highligts on base or some grass maybe). Great camouflage though!

@Rik a Kadrin Kazad: Hmm, thats me... :) But thanks for all the comments on my Daemon Prince. He's a bit unlucky to have grown that horn out of his eye socket/forehead though...

@DeadInTheHead: Not sure about the red base, but guessing that's not permanent. Great basing of the (huge)miniature. That goes for your nicely painted dragon too, great looking water breaches(is that the word?).

@Fabius Bile: Nice paintjob, really. Blood on the left hand is magnificent imo. Also a really cool spartan ogre.

@Daniel36: I agree, I think almost I like terraining best.. The flame swords look great, stands out amidst your commoners, the lady in white too.

@Doi: Now, thats a huge hammer... Looks awsomely smashing! Like the strung up skulls too.

@perplexiti: Thats a great looking dwarf army now. The Carnosaur has a great skincolour, positure and base.

@Harvey: Great great spider, nice skin on that one! The eyes, teeth and bone looks awsome too. Keep it up.

Malorian

If you are thinking of doing a joker it's not too late! Paint up a character today!

DarkAngelsG
31-05-2011, 18:26
@Rik
I could do that, but I'm absolutely horrible at lining, especially with washes. Right now I've been relying more on highlighting to do the trick. But then, I've really only tried lining devlan mud onto a white basecoat, and that is quite hard to do. Do you think I'd have to have very clean lines to still make it look good?

@Harvey
That spider is great! I really like the eyes and the bone.

Rik a Kadrin Kazad
31-05-2011, 19:14
@DarkAngelsG: I'm not the best painter to give advice, but I'd say just give the whole skin a wash, it'll sink down into the folds by itself, then you can highlight afterwards.

Yeah, I'm not the best painter around either, but a wash on the skin does wonders, then just a quick highlight and jobs a good 'un.

OK, late comments, really sorry about this:

@Malorian/Braad - thanks for keeping things running so smoothly, one of the main reasons I haven't dropped out of the tale yet...
@Red Skullz - great work and a cool theme.
@Malorian - gratz on finishing the lizards, some nice stuff over the months. And love those Grey Squigs.
@Kaos - beautiful paint jobs. Love the shields.
@Matrim_Cauthon - I have to disagree with you, you've done a beautiful paint job to complement a beautiful model.
@Purplebeard - You've also done justice with your painting to some classic figs.
@Chicken Pig - Fantastic shading on those dragon ogres.
@Ego Ninja - Nice Cannon and giant, but I especially like the warlock engineer.
@DarkAngelsG - nice painting, but snow bases ? aren't lizardmen cold-blooded ?
@someone2040 - Good work on those beastmen, painting that many a month must be sending you slightly round the bend though...
@Tonberry - Another of the many great IoB mages this tale has produced over the months, and cool army shot too, would be nice to see it displayed on a gaming table with some stuff in the background, hint hint ;)
@Confessor_Atol - Love the bugman model. And all the best for the Masters and the Wedding.
@gsmc - very brown, but in a warm way, so it's no bad thing
@Rik a Kadrin Kazad - great DP, a bit better than the rather shocking effort just ender it :-D
@Fabius Bile - good stuff, I especially like the verdigris on the tyrants armour.
@Doi - what is it with Ogre players and cool metalwork ? I love the spiked ball on the end of the club and the belly plate (and the rest too), though his bare back does look a bit like a bottom.
@perplexiti - I know what oyu mean about the motivation thing, mine is seriously waning. But good that you managed to get these well painted models done my fave being the carnosaur.

And Responses:

@Daniel36 - Thank you kindly sir, that base is possibly the best thing i produced for the tale.
@someone2040 - Yes, my DP had good ocmpany with Rik's.

600pts is a fair whack! :shifty:

@perplexiti - Lol, good evilness maybe ?
@Harvey - Ta muchly
@Rik a Kadrin Kazad - Not 100 sure how the bases will be painted in the end, I'll hopefully make a decision before the end of the tale. And I think the word is 'breakers'.

I can't speak for the others but for me it's because the metal is the simplest part of the process. It is a bit hard to stuff up successive washes/drybrushes :p.

Oh, and you've got a mind as far into the gutter as I do :shifty:.

@Malorian/Braad - thanks for keeping things running so smoothly, one of the main reasons I haven't dropped out of the tale yet...

Braad's doing the real work.

All I'm doing is making the original post :)

@DeadInTheHead:

Definitely good evilness mate! And the Carnosaur model is one of my favs from the Lizardmen line too.

@DeadInTheHead
Yes, they are Cold Blooded. But I found some small bits of fluff that allowed me to lead in their immunity to cold, which is due, in short, to a blessing from Tzeentch with a hidden binding contract with it.

For some reason metal does seem to be absurdly easy, that's true. Painting gold can be hard sometimes though, it's so hard to get an even coat of it...
