The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2010-2011 Month 9

Hello all,

This is the thread for the work you have done in May and after a week (to give folks time to post their work) it becomes the thread to post your comments on others work and discuss what you are painting in May.

Lots of folks dropping out.

The difference between people that fail and people that succeed in life is quite often that those who succeed were determined to do so ....
... and refuse to quit.

Well done to all of you still in this.

All the very best,

The story so far: (Big thanks to Braad for keeping up the table)

640x480 seems to work best OR use thumbnails
Bigger than this results in the scroll bar of doom for many.

What is it all about?

The aim of The Tale of Painters (TOP) is to help motivate those involved to start and complete an army in the next twelve months.

We made a decision early on to split the Tale into two separate 'halves' one for 40K and one for Fantasy. (Just because of the numbers of people involved) They have continued to evolve in slightly different ways but this is how the Fantasy Tale works.

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months. Starting with their first post on the last day of September 2010 and finishing with their last post on the last day of August 2011. So we have this month, whilst everyone signs up, to collect, build, convert, undercoat and otherwise get yourself ready to go with the first work in progress starting in September.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

At the end of each month a new thread will appear for the painters to post your previous months painting and the rest of the painters to offer words of encouragement.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.
(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end ... it's harder than you think!)

Men and Boys

Because this is harder than you would think ... As last year rather than try and hold everyone to 200 points a month I have decided to allow folks to join in and paint only 100 points a month. Whilst the goal for many remains getting a 2000 point army painted in a year the original and ongoing intention of this whole thing was to encourage and support folks to get stuff painted and 1000 points is better than no points! As a result we have two catagories. 'Men' (painting 200 points/month) and 'Boys' (painting 100 points/month).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : No you are not too late. Yes you can still join in. Just post on this thread saying which army and how many points you intend to paint.

Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes (we are not here to tell you how and when to paint your stuff, it is great to get ahead) BUT we would like you only to post 200 points (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 200 points a month (200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc.) so as not to depress the hell out of those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example oif you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. We love background stuff. Write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

Q : Can Doi drop out?
A : No he can't.

Vampire Counts - Stirland themed - "Damned Stirlanders"

Month 9: Necromancer, Wight King BsB, Vampire Lord - 470
(I`ve included items with the point cost)

Highs : Playing a game this month!
Lows: None really

TOTAL POINTS: 1412 + 470 pts = 1882 points

PLANNED FOR THIS MONTH: Grave Guard (and hopefully ghouls)

My fav necro conversion! This is my new regular necromancer in all of my lists :)

Simple conversion, trimmed warrior of chaos torso, skaven chopped head as the head, and empire legs. Arms from Dark Elfs actually. The banner itself is shows the two sides of my army, 1; the original Stirland State Force and 2; the damned side of undeath (the blue/magical text)

I`ve upgraded him as a vamplord as I wanted to field him often. Also I`m more of a liche priest/necromancer fan than a vamp fan so necrarchs are more my thing. Very pleased with this fig! The stiched eyes and mouth is to heigthen his other senses and give more omph to his powers. He guards his scrolls vigourously (sp?), the staff has a head from a witch, a mutant and a mighty warrior for more potency. And so on. Oh and the heaving base is to illustrate that dead things rises as he walks along.

Unit in line for june.

For more pics and whatnot check out my plog, link in sig ;)

Oh bugger - I hadn't realised it was June already! What happened to May?

Anyway I'll submit in a couple of weeks I guess. Good luck everyone.

01-06-2011, 15:09
Okay, I'm still struggling big time (my grampa's death last month, job interview this month, final exam next month), but I don't want to drop out. So it's time for some compromises, I fear, and I hope you bear with me.

Army: Ogre Kingdoms 1

Unit: 1/3 of Greasus Goldtooth

Points: 200

Total Points: 1740

Army: Ogre Kingdoms 2

Unit: Hunter & Sabretusks

Points: 185

Total Points: 1625

Army: High Elves

Unit: 1/3 of a unit of 40 Maiden Guard (count as Lothern Sea Guard)

Points: 170

Total Points: 1683

I was planning to go out with a bang, now I'm in danger of going out with a whimper. I hope I'll find my motivation again soon.

Hello Warseer-ers

Big month for me.... I finished off my Keg(Anvil) of doom, with rune lord bugman, and 13 converted plastic hammerers with unit spacer.

I can't say how much I hate the mono-pose metal hammerers. Kit bashing these plastic hammerers has been a ton of fun. They're a mix of miners, cannon crew and command models from all the kits. I wanted bare arms to show off their S4 muscles.

points: ??? so.... 433 for the for the Keg/anvil and Bugman, 156 for hammerers -200 for last months contribution + the total from last month=2098!! Finally broke the 2K mark!
13 hammerers.....
Some individual shots...

Bugman and his keg of doom!!!!

Army Beastmen (A)

Units: Great Bray (235), 50 Ungor (265), Chariot (80), Minotaur musician (65), 8 Gors w/AHW (64) = 709

Painting: All done with the same Khemri brown skin/scorched brown bodies, or Tallarn flesh/scorched brown for the ungors.

Highs/Lows: 50 ungor were a trial and eveyone else was speed painted in about a month as I've off to a competition to this weekend with the beasts.

Great Bray

Ungor Horde

Minotaur Musician

02-06-2011, 06:51
Army: Beastmen (B)

Units: Shaman (130), Razorgor (55), 24 Bestigor with full command (318), Ghorgon (275) = 923

Painting: Much the same as above. The army all follows the same colour them to hopefully look "together" as an army. I am quite pleased with the Ghorgon though. I know its a simple conversion but as one of my first forays into Greenstuff I was pleased.

02-06-2011, 10:29
Awesome sauce!

Lifeweaver and Glade Guard

Hero equipped with Rageth's Wildfire Blades and Glade Guard

Someone I already painted, therefore simply being a Glade Guard with... Glade Guard

Lifeweaver (unequipped) - 250
Hero with Wildfire Blades and armour - 87
Lots of Glade Guard with musicians - 426
Total Points this month- 763

Fun fact: I got more points in this one month than I did in all the other months combined. Okay, so that is in part due to the fact I made my Wizard a level 4 guy, but still... Pretty impressive!! Now if only I could get back to the Empire... I want to get those geezers painted up!

What still needs to be done?
Well, I kind of wished I had a little more time for the hairdos on the Glade Guard. Those aren't too pretty, but in such numbers you don't really see that. Also, the white on the bows really need some washes, but again, I simply ran out of time and right now I just can't be bothered any longer. I am really proud I managed to get SO MUCH done in such a short amount of time. These Elves have gone through at least 3 different colour schemes before I finally decided on this one. I am very happy with this scheme though.

02-06-2011, 19:24
Im finished with my army. If you havent seen allready heres some pics :

But I will paint some more stuff at random, shall i continue posting it here for fun or whats the word on that? Huh? It will be a few characters and then dwarfs and also i must finish a griffon for my friend and build and convert a Ghorgon out of a plastic Giant for another friend. I have multiple friends. Yay!

Once, at bandcamp we, he.. well, it was a flute.. and then.. well. :shifty:

03-06-2011, 18:03
Units: great goblin shaman on wolf, goblin warboss, 5 savages w/ banner, 6 river trolls

Points: 163+65+55+270= 553

Conversions: Goblin shaman on wolf is obviously just a kit bash. Pretty much a normal wolf rider with oop night goblin body, a severed head added, and orc skull to make a wand from old starter set.

Highs: This month I caught goblins fever and put together those characters and painted them up right away, and then getting those river trolls done was nice too.

Lows: I was suppose to finish off my savages and I only ended up doing 5...

Next up: 15 savages for sure (I'll need them for a tournament) and who knows what else ;)

06-06-2011, 07:32
Continuing with the lazt painting...

ARMY : Empire : 1000 Points (BOYS)

"UNIT": 3 knights

BACKGROUND/THEME: After the Storm of Chaos the forces of Empire are mixed and in bad shape. I plan to build an Empire army with mixed units.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Basic models. Painted 2 Bretonnians to mix things up.

PAINTING: Booooooooooring.

BASING: Most models have their base decorated with slates GW's basing kit. Other than that there's saw dust, painted black, highlighted with dark grey, space wolves gray (I think) and bleached bone and white. Some flock added also from various sources.

STILL TO DO: Shields.

HIGHS AND LOWS: High would be painting something... I just don't have the time are motivation to paint these... Sadly. During the whole Tale I've played only one game with this army and it's most likely not going to change. But by Sigmar I finish this army!

POINTS : Knight x2 (69)

TOTAL POINTS : 69p. / Overall ???p.

06-06-2011, 18:54
Thanks to Braad, the table is on the first post now

06-06-2011, 20:45
It's awfully short.

/That's what she said.

07-06-2011, 06:34
Just in the nick of time :shifty:.

ARMY: Goblins - Boys

UNIT: Goblin Big Boss on Wolf w/equipment

Highs : Getting something done. I knocked this guy up quickly as final assignments/start of exam period meant my big project had to be sidelined for now.
Lows: Not being able to get my big project finished.

TOTAL POINTS: 670 (I'll make up the 30pts next month )

PLANNED FOR THIS MONTH: Lets just say my big project is quite tall...

ARMY: Ogres - Boys

NEXT MONTH: No idea. I either need to think of a colour scheme for my gnoblars or buy something new...

Hey guys and girls, just thought i'd drop in and say hi. Since my last post I have started a new job and moved cities.

I haven't had a heap of time to paint unfortunately, but have got at least 1k elves done. I'll try and get my computer fixed (it didn't like the move) and post some pics.

I'm amazed by all the people that have stuck it out this long, and shocked that I've somehow managed to keep going too.

It's been cavalry month for me for both my HE and Khorne armies, I'm hoping that all will be finished and posted this weekend.

@Braad - I think you have been a little over generous with my points total on the table for this month. The previous entry was two months worth of painting, totalling 358 points, and it looks like you have credited me with 358 points for both the previous months, giving me a current total of 1935 points. If you remove both scores, and split the 358 points equally, (ie 179pts), this would give the correct current total of 1577 points.:D

And just to be awkward, I moved house a couple of weeks back, which has obviously had an impact on the amount of work I've been able to do this month. I am catching up as I type this, and to avoid unnecessary jokering, I will be doing another big points total for this month and the next. I will post a Work in Progress update by this weekend.

You might notice you're not in the table anymore, but just post your stuff and you'll be back in the next update.

For myself, I'm ashamed I have to pull a third joker. Even with 1000 points I'm not keeping up. 4 month of doing nothing related to warhammer (except a few games) is not helping out. Life is awfully busy. However, I did start to assemble some new stuff lately, so hopefully I'll also find some time to paint it.

07-06-2011, 20:38
Orcs & Goblins : 1000 POINTS

Dice roll: 2

UNIT: Goblin Shaman on Arachnarok Spider and 10 Night Goblin Spider Riders

BACKGROUND/THEME: Although giant spiders are more commonly associated with forest goblins, night goblins sometimes capture and utilise cave spiders in the same manner as squigs.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Arachnarok straight out of the box, and BFSP spider riders with the feathers cut off and greenstuff cloaks added.

PAINTING: Goblins as before, spiders base coated in knarloc green worked up to gretchin green with thraka wash.

BASING: I'm going to add 8 magnetised spiders as wound counters for the arachnarok.

STILL TO DO: Finished.

HIGHS AND LOWS: First bit of greenstuff!

POINTS : blimey, 605.

07-06-2011, 20:53
Vampire Counts : 1000 POINTS

Dice roll: 4

UNIT: 40 zombies with musician and standard bearer.

BACKGROUND/THEME: The bodies of the recently dead provide vampires and necromancers with an abundant source of material from which to raise zombies. Although generally ineffective in combat, zombies have a psychological impact that can often turn the tide of a battle in favour of their animator.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight out of the battalion.

PAINTING: Elf flesh and lots of browns, washed with sepia and the skin drybrushed rotting flesh.

BASING: Paint graveyard earth, wash scorched brown, drybrush graveyard earth, drybrush 1:1 graveyard earth:bleached bone. Apply scorched grass.

STILL TO DO: Finished.

HIGHS AND LOWS: A warmer tone than the rest of the army.

POINTS : 172

07-06-2011, 21:12
Empire : 1000 POINTS

Dice roll: 6

UNIT: Templar Grand Master.

BACKGROUND/THEME: The Order of the Red Shield are the most prominent Knightly body in Talabheim, and serve as the personal bodyguard of Elector Count Halmut Feuerbach. They are led by Klaus Von Richvald, a man of few words whose actions speak for themselves.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Empire General kit.

PAINTING: Same formula as before for red, white and skin.

BASING: Wash scorched brown, base calthan brown, drybrush khemri brown. Static grass to finish.

STILL TO DO: Finished.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Lost his shield somewhere...

POINTS : 145

08-06-2011, 02:42
So far behind, I don't know if I should post this here or in the other thread.

Halfling Hot Pot

50 points

550 so far

More on the way

Tried to paint this like Oompa Loompas. See I have lots to do if I want to accomplish this. Still, I am happy enough with it.

08-06-2011, 17:21
Comment time! (Although sad to see so few posts so far...)

Red Skullz: Great looking conversions. That army is going to be amazing when finished.

EmperorNorton: That's a LOT of handmaidens! Only thing that seems missed is some red in the meet where the bite was taken.

Confessor_Atol: And the beer boyz keep coming. The hammer/shield poses look very cool.

KHolbourn: Neat conversion idea for the Ghorgon. How does it look from the back?

Daniel 36: Those are some perfect looking wood elves. Those pictures could have come from the army book itself :)

Kaos: Congrats for finishing, and happy to see you will keep going too.

Malorian: Going character heavy again eh? How about you get your butt in gear and get some freaking troops done!

doc_cthulhu: Painting different styles of knights is a good way to keep motivated. Keep it up!

Doi: That conversion turned out pretty good. Must have been 'fun' to hacksaw the pewter to make it fit right though...

Harvey: The conversion probably would have been a lot easier to just put actual night goblins on the spiders. Or did they not fit right?

Clobbersaurus: Those are some angry looking Oompa Loopmas... ;)

09-06-2011, 05:03
Well, a snozwanger ate their entire village.

09-06-2011, 08:31

@Red Skullz - Lovely conversions and a brilliant banner.

@EmperorNorton - I'd hardly call that lot a whimper! Greasus has bucketloads of character, and I love the Sabretusks.

@Confessor_Atol - Nice lot of beer going on there.

@KHolbourn - Congratulations on getting all those ungor painted. It's all looking very unified.

@Daniel36 - I love the way your characters stand out from the rank and file without looking out of place.

@Kaos - Spectacular. A huge well done.

@Malorian - Great to see all the old river troll models.

@doc_cthulhu - Nice to see Bretonian models used as Empire knights. Smashing use of red and blue.

@Doi - I've not seen that mini before - makes a great character. The red wolf mask really finishes it off.

@Clobbersaurus - Well done - they're definitely orange!

@Malorian - I tried regular night goblins, but they didn't really look quite right. To be honest, I'd been intending to try doing them as my first attempt at greenstuff since this year's Tale began. I know they're pretty rubbish, but I'm happy I gave it a go.

09-06-2011, 13:18
Doi: That conversion turned out pretty good. Must have been 'fun' to hacksaw the pewter to make it fit right though...

Actually, it was. A Dremel at 30,000RPM meant I had more trouble cleaning the metal filings off of my shirt :p.

@Doi - I've not seen that mini before - makes a great character. The red wolf mask really finishes it off.

Thanks. It's a Goblin Big Boss on foot cut in half and stuck on wolfrider legs.

Hopefully I can knock up some comments of my own tomorrow.

@EmperorNorton: Very nice ogres!

@Conf_Atol: I remember Bugman well as he was my first SC, done`im justice!

@KHolbourn: BoC where my second army, this is great stuff :)

@Daniel36: I actually like these, WE is not normally my cup of tea :)

@Kaos: Like your nick , this is chaos in one of the very best forms I`ve seen :D

@Malorian: Great job there mate!
Thanks! I hope that I will manage to get it complete though, I`m hopeless in getting sidetracked..

@doc_c: fantastic knights!

@doi: nice gobbo there :)

@Harvey: the aracnoc..ehm..the largest spider is ace, great colour scheme and I salute you for painting so many zombies!
Thanks, mighty pleased with that banner myself ;)

@Clobbersaurus: I love those old halfling minis, pity they made so few!

10-06-2011, 11:48
Hello guys, I'm gonna have to play a joker this month. Have been working on some men-at-arms and two pegasus knights, which hopefully will be finished next month :D

10-06-2011, 13:55
Hello folks, for those who don't 'know' me I've not been on Warseer for around a year but just came back recently after (hopefully) getting back into the hobby again. As an old TOFP/TO40KP member I thought I'd jump in and follow the latest threads for the tales so here are my comments on peoples stuff:

Red_Skullz - liking the idea for the army and some nice painting and conversion to go with it. Looking forward to seeing those Grave Guard

EmperorNorton - Very nice stuff from you as always, impressive that you're managing to do 3 armies, that's hardcore! Why the 2 OK's? Are you making them into one large army or having them themed differently (they look like they're the same army in the pics but it's difficult to tell with only a couple of things there)?

Confessor_Atol - loving the hammers and very good painting to with them too

KHolbourn - impressive amount of models knocked out in a month and they're looking good too. Is that green stuff on the face of the rear left Gor? The Ghorgon looks excellent

Daniel36 - that is indeed an impressive amount of work to get done in a month and it looks very nice too although the photos are a little blurry so would be nicer to see some better quality ones if you can?

Kaos - excellent looking army, briefly browsed through your project logs too and there's some impressive stuff in there

Marlorian - cool looking stuff, like the blue you've gone for on the trolls. How come you decided to use these instead of the new plastics or was it just because you had them lying around?

doc_cthulhu - like the idea for the army and those three knights look nice. Hope you manage to get some more gaming in to up your motivation again

Doi - liking the wolf, shame you couldn't get more done but I'm looking forward to seeing what your big project is

Harvey - like your stuff, I did the same thing with my BfSP spider riders as I have a NG only army. How come you didn't convert the gobbos on the giant. Impressive amount of zombies done too and I'm liking the look of them. Finally I'm also liking the Empire general. Impressive that you're doing 3 armies. The green on the spider riders and the red on the general looks a little flat, have you used a wash on them? I think it might be the photos though because the zombies don't look it?

Clobbersaurus - nice stuff, good to see some halflings again and nice idea for a theme

10-06-2011, 16:57
Ah... the indecision is making me post this for a second time:

10-06-2011, 17:40
Marlorian - cool looking stuff, like the blue you've gone for on the trolls. How come you decided to use these instead of the new plastics or was it just because you had them lying around?

I got them for a good deal on Kijiji :)

The new plastics look really good but then again there's no school like old school ;)

My Summer Offensive has commenced - big update!

ARMY : Dwarves: 2000 Points (MEN)

UNIT: 24 Purplebeard Hammerers (90% done), 20 Miners inc Cmd (2/3 done), 10 Slayers (2/3 done), 12 DHW Rangers (2/3 done), 18 Rangers (1/4 done)

BACKGROUND/THEME: A Hold of Dwarves living in the far north of the world, in a region under the terrible influence of Chaos. Led by the ancient and dwindling Purplebeard family, they fight to survive against the unending tide of Chaos. Many Gnomes live and fight alongside them too.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Citadel & Asgard 1980s & 1990s figures.

STILL TO DO: A fair bit of the painting, varnishing, basing, etc. Also obtaining a command group for the Hammerers.

HIGHS & LOWS: Coming close to the end of the first 2000pts.

POINTS: Counting everything as half painted gives:
(312+245+110+168+234)/2 = 1069/2 = 534pts

TOTAL POINTS SO FAR : 1286 +534 = 1820

DICE ROLL : Er, probably not relevant anymore - the mighty throng has wilted to a small band of brethren. I'll just comment on everyone this month.

Full shot of all the WIP stuff.

The Honourable Purplebeards! (Hammerers)

More in a moment.

11-06-2011, 18:10
And the rest...

Both units of Rangers

This has been a lot of work, but the army is coming together now, and things are finally being painted. My plan for the smaller units is to have them as 'buffs' to existing painted/half-painted units, and to get war machines at the end (since they take much less painting). Hopefully I will pass the 2000pt mark next month, and I think that if I do a few war machines, a couple more characters, and finish off some pre-tale bits, then I should be able to get to 5000pts by September....

11-06-2011, 18:17
ARMY : Gnomes (Empire proxy): 1000 Points (BOYS)

UNIT: Gnome Wizard Lord, Gnome Wizard

BACKGROUND/THEME: A Hold of Dwarves living in the far north of the world, in a region under the terrible influence of Chaos. Led by the ancient and dwindling Purplebeard family, they fight to survive against the unending tide of Chaos. Many Gnomes live and fight alongside them too.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Citadel Iron Claw Dwarf Wizard, Citadel Gnome Wizard.

STILL TO DO: The Gnome Wizard Lord is only half painted, the other guy is maybe a 1/4 done, so I'm only counting the Lord. Although I may get rid of the white for yellow instead....

HIGHS & LOWS: Just getting more done.

POINTS: 250/2 = 125pts

TOTAL POINTS SO FAR : 241 + 125 = 366pts.

Gnome Wizards!

You'll be pleased to know too that I'm still working on the pony riders - I have finished 6 of the riders now, and doing the horses this month.

11-06-2011, 19:53
Great work purplebeard. Plus I notice more of them have purple beards again too :)

The finish line is in sight!

12-06-2011, 13:57
Running late this month, sorry. Life's been kicking the snot out of me lately.

ARMY : Brettonians 1000 Points (BOYS)

UNIT: Trebuchet

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3620/5824048807_75e629003f.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/27621452@N06/5824048807/)

BACKGROUND/THEME: Nothing super consistent. Starter army form which to build.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Added a base to the treb, as I was concerned about wear and tear on the bottom of the model.

STILL TO DO: Last unit - 3 peg knights.

HIGHS & LOWS: High was just getting back into painting. I've been dealing with some fairly stressful personal issues of late, and haven't had the time, energy, or inclination to set brush to minis.

POINTS: 90, as the list I'm working towards isn't using the extra crewman.

TOTAL POINTS SO FAR : Should be at 828.

A little late, but not too bad I feel.

Dawi : 2000 POINTS (MEN)

UNIT: Cannon with engineer

BUILD/CONVERSION: No conversion, just stock models, the engineer is from the thunderers box.

PAINTING: For the metal, chainmail, with a badab black wash then a chainmail drybrush, Tallern flesh with an ogryn flesh wash and a dwarf flesh drybrush. Really quick paint job on these fellas.

BASING: Was done the same as the rest of the Dawi.

STILL TO DO: Nothing.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Again, I love the classic Dwarf stuff, and the crew of this cannon are some of my personal favs, also only the second purchase I made for my Dwarfs all those years ago.

Cannon & crew:

Army so far:

Next month: I’ll probably do some more artillery, some hot stuff for the boys, or maybe a runesmith. It depends how lazy I am this month.

12-06-2011, 18:34
Lizardmen : 2000 POINTS (Men)

UNIT: Saurus Oldblood.

BUILD/CONVERSION: No conversion at all.

PAINTING: Basecoated black, skin was painted with foundation blue, then heavy drybrush with hawk turqoise, then a vey light space wolf grey drybrush. Gold was vermin brown, then shining gold, then a chestnut ink wash. Skulls and horns were dheneb stone, then devlan mud wash and bleached bone light drybrush.

BASING: A giant lizard with sharp teeth and claws.

HIGHS AND LOWS: No lows, I love this mini. He does ok if his ride doesn't get slapped by a big cannon ball or giant arrow, although he's still quite dangerous with out the carnosaur.

TOTAL POINTS: 1361 (I must of stuffed up my points total as this is the correct amount I've painted so far)

His back:

Army so far:

Next month: Something even smaller, but more numerous.

Alright, comments time. As there's not many of us left I'll comment on everyone's work.

Page 1:

@Red Skullz: Nice conversions man! Is that Vampire from the Marco Polo(?) mini?

@EmperorNorton: Must have been a mission to paint that greasus mini, so much bling. Great looking hunter too man. That's a load of elf girlies all right, will look fantastic when you've finished them.

@Confessor_Atol: Those are some awesome Hammerers, great conversions. The Runelord looks sooo good as well, great idea.

@Kholbourn: Good looking beasts mate, Great idea for the minotaur musician too, although the arm holding the horn could do with a little greenstuff to blend it to the shoulder without the small gap.

@Daniel36: Really nice Elves, love the conversion for the wildfire blades, looks great.

@Kaos: That looks awesome man! A real chaos horde alright. Congrats on finishing and I look forward to seeing what else you paint.

@ Malorian: Great stuff Malorian, nice yellow warpaint too.

@doc_cthulhu: Really cool looking knights, it's a shame your motivations lacking, I know that problem too well.

@doi: Nice gobbo, I like the fur on the wolf.

Page 2.

@harvey: Awesome work with the spider and howdah, I feel it just needs a little contrasting colour on it, it's very green. That's a ton of zombies too mate! And a very nice clean templar grand master, nice man.

@Clobbersaurus: Nice, I'm not sure on the colours for the halflings themselves, but you've made them look like Oompa-loompas all right.

@Purplebeard: Plenty of great work there man, love those old Dwarf minis.

@Hilte2: Nice man, really well painted. They look dirty and peasenty (I don't think thats really a word, but oh well).

Red Skullz

@Jonahmaul: Thanks! Check my plog (link in sig) for some painted GGs :)

@Purplebeard: Monster effort mate! Really digging the purple beards throughout :)

@Hilte2: Fantastic brets, love the palette!

@perplexiti: Another monster effort, tons of minis done!
Thanks! Yeah it sure is, had it for years but never knew what to do with him before now :)

Sorry guys - Jokers for my Skaven and Chaos and my Orcs should be ok on points.

RIGHT! Finally got organised!

Army - 2000pts+ Ogre Kingdoms

Total so far: 1577pts

This Month's units = 5x Leadbelchers (inc Thunderfist & Bellower)
1x Hunter 2x Sabretusks

This Month's points = 265pts (first half of a double entry, same for next month)

This is a work in progress post, having just moved house, I was unable to do much work last month, so I'm pulling double duty this month (as it is Ogres, this is not too difficult lol).

Build - Leadbelchers are fairly standard, one of them has been armed with a spare steam tank cannon, which required a bit of resculpting on one of the arms. The Hunter has had a little extra work done too, swapped the club for a hammer, put it in his left hand, and put his harpoon launcher in his right hand, plus swapped out those awful sabretusk models for a pair of the new boars.

13-06-2011, 16:37
Regretfully, I must play this for this month and May, both.
Construction of my house, and my trip to Michigan have both got in the way and I'm afraid I just don't have time to paint.

14-06-2011, 01:07
I know that the orange halflings aren't going over well, and I'm not too happy with the orange. However, I have another unpainted set still in the pack. The first one was for fun.

14-06-2011, 03:59
Skaven: 1000 POINTS (boy)

UNIT: Warpfire Thrower, Poisoned Fart Machine.

BACKGROUND/THEME: Ratty, Ratty, Ratty Rats

BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight from starter set..

PAINTING: Basecoated brown with simple repaint and wash. I think the shiny green fart balls worked well, Knarloc Green with a little boltgun metal then drybrushed with brazen brass.

BASING: Raw sand with some dead grass flock. I know Im supposed to paint the sand to look like sand but thought Ild go natural. This base works better than the one I had been using so thanks for the suggestions.

HIGHS AND LOWS: More fun than painting clanrats. Still too many clanrats to go.

14-06-2011, 04:28
And now for comments. I do find this tale inspirational yet a great feeling of fatigue in the Tale this month. must be end of year blues.

@Red Skullz: A truly lovely buttoned down warrior priest

@EmperorNorton: High standard and good volume all things considered. Good job.

@Confessor_Atol: Dwarves and barrels and axes in abundance. Iconic! Well painted

@Kholbourn: Well done. Good luck in the tournament

@Daniel36: That is a lot of points. I like the hero.

@Kaos: Very Nice army - still think those shields from last month are fabulous.

@ Malorian: Nice. Will I get to kill some of them this weekend? I’ve been looking forward to your growing trolls force, and the look good too, er I mean bad and yucky.

@doc_cthulhu: Sigmar likes completed projects. Nice sigil on the horse blanket - bet it has a proper name.

@doi: Keep on going. He’ll probably prove to be your toughest character based on the lip-ring.

@harvey: Good spiders and blanket work on the riders. The zombies from page 2 look rather fine as well.

Page 2.

@Clobbersaurus: I see others have commented on the orange spray tan effect. Still its a good model on a nice simple effective base. You could blame the color on a previous misfire.

@Purplebeard: Nice dwarves, its an impressive army, but I must admit I’m more taken with the gnomes, plenty of character in both, and the painting pulls it all together.

@Hilte2: Very well painted trebuchet. Great depth in the wood and clothing.

@Perplexiti: Nice simple cannon and crew. Good to see what can be done with quick painting.

Fabius Bile: Ah - sabretusks - good thought. I like the basing on those.

14-06-2011, 10:59
Well, I was planning on finishing my months stuff for the tale this last weekend, but ended up painting 730 points of Grey Knights instead...

(I was also supposed to be studying for some French tests I have this week, never mind).

I'll try and get my stuff done, and get some army shots, as a good way to bow out of the tale. I've run out of Khorne stuff to paint (well I have a box of bloodletters which I don't have the motivation to build, let alone paint). And apart from turning some wyches into Death Cult Assassins, I'm a bit sick of staring at smug, pointy-eared gits.

So there you go.

14-06-2011, 13:14
Bah, I have to post a joker this month...

It's not like I haven't painted anything. In fact, quite the contrary, I have painted up my copy of Dwarf King's Hold (Mantic's new dungeon crawler). So I have painted 22 skeletons and 7 dwarfs, but sadly no Chaos Warriors.

So... Joker for me!

14-06-2011, 18:53
More comments...

Hilte2: Good to have you back and painting again. The treb looks perfect.

perplexiti: Not the horde you came out with last time but still a good addition to the throng.

Fabiuis Bile: You don't like the sabretusks? I thought they were ok. Anyway the boars are fitting too. Too bad the thunderfist model isn't more to scale with the rest.

gsmc: Some good looking weapon teams. I'm sure I'll learn to fear them. And no you won't be seeing the orcs at the tournament. If I get to play then I'm breaking out Mazdamundi ;)

15-06-2011, 08:48
Fabius Bile - Liking the look of your stuff and nice conversion on the Hunter. I'm not a big fan of the sabretusks either although I think the way they're painted in the OK book doesn't really sell them. Agree with Malorian hough that the thunderfist looks slightly out of scale

gsmc - nice looking teams although the photo of the second one doesn't do it justice!

Fabius Bile
15-06-2011, 09:57
Ok, comment time!

@RedSkulls - love the theme, the completed army will be awesome!

@EmperorNorton - Greasus looks great already with just the base colours, should be amazing when finished, The Hunter is looking great, even the sabretusks look good (and I've always hated those models!)

@Confessor-Atol - Great dwarves, love the giant keg, very characterful!

@Kholbourn - Nice beasts, particularly like the razorgor

@Daniel36 - Really nice looking Wood Elf Army

@Kaos - Awesome work, easily my favourite army this year, well done Sir!

@Malorian - very Savage orcs;)

@Doc_Cthulu - Very neat work, love the shading

@Doi - love the big boss!

@Harvey - What a terrifying horde of spiders! That is a huge zombie horde!

@Clobbersaurus - Mmmm, Hotpot!

@Purplebeard - what a very characterful army!

@Hilte2 - Nice neat Tree Bucket!

@Perplexiti - great Oldblood, I always liked that model

GSMC - neat work on those rats

and in response to Malorian and Jonahmauls comments, yes, the thunderfist is a bit out of scale. I saw a pic of the model, thought it looked cool and would make an excellent alternate leadbelcher model, so I ordered it. It wasn't until I had it in my hand that I realised it was a bit on the small side.

Soooo, I came up with a nice bit of fluff to explain his small stature, ie he is the son of the Tyrant, who was hounded from the tribe and left to fend for himself. He fought hard and survived in the wilderness, eventually learning his trade as a gunner in the Imperial Navy, where he replaced an entire cannon crew (by virtue of the fact he had eaten the crew, thus creating a vacancy!)

He returned home and immediately challenged the current Thunderfist to a cannon duel. The current incumbent readily accepted the challenge, making the same mistake many had made before, badly misunderestimating the gunnery skill of the young ogre, simply known as "The Runt".

The Runt killed the Thunderfist with a mighty display of gunnery, then reloaded and killed another bull, who was halfway through a vulgarly disparraging remark about the Runt's reproductive equipment. No one else dared to comment. The Runt had created himself a job vacancy, and earned the respect of the tribe. Even his father, Tyrant Oleg the Blooddrunk grudgingly muttered "That's my boy!"

15-06-2011, 10:49
Fabius - that's brilliant! Nothing like a bit of a theme to the army and that is very Ogre like! And it is a nice miniature!

15-06-2011, 11:04
Joker for me this month.

15-06-2011, 23:20

Some long-overdue comments:

Red Skullz: Love the theme, and the expression on the noble is priceless.

EmperorNorton: Some lovely, precise work there - sooo much detail to pick out, and you've done a fantastic job.

Confessor_Atol: You've done a terrific job bringing out the textures on the figs, and the conversions are fantastic. Love the hammers

KHolburn: They might have been a trial, but the sheer mass of Ungors looks damn intimidating on the table.

Daniel36: Loving the lightweaver, and kudos on the sheer number of models completed.

Kaos: I've been following your posts avidly, and seeing the whole army together is impressive as hell. Beautiful job.

Malorian: Blue on the trolls is great. They look like Squigs that got all grown up ;)

Doc Cthulhu: I like the mix of figs there, interested to see how the whole project develops.

Doi: I'm digging the muted pallette on the Arachnarok, cool change of pace from how I've seen them done so far.

Harvey: Braaaaaaaaaaiiiiiinnnnnssss . . . .

Clobber: Love it, but do they know about second breakfast?

Purplebeard: Raver dwarfs. Love it.

Purplexti: Like the engineer there - point and shoot.

Fabius: Is that a warmachine troll head on one of the leadbelchers?

gsmc: Looks good, but hard to tell because of the lighting in the photos.

Kudos to all for gutting this out, I know how easy it can be to just drop out.

Fabius: Is that a warmachine troll head on one of the leadbelchers?

No it isn't, but I can see why you might think that it was. This is the figure I've used, from Tales Of War's Ron & Bones game. As you can see, it looks like a perfect fit for Ogre Leadbelchers, but unfortunately it is a bit on the small side - great miniature all the same though!

16-06-2011, 09:48
I'm thinking of doing a Nurgle themed OK army at some point and this that this model would be awesome, could beef him up a bit with GS to make him similar size and those tentacles on the cannon could easily be merged into the holding arm to make it look like it had become part of the Ogre =)

16-06-2011, 10:58
Hi Folks (yes, I am still alive, just very quiet),

Can I get another joker for this month please. I'm feeling a little more inspired to paint again now (in part because I'm moving house soon and know that after that I may not be able to paint for quite a while), so hopefully I'll have a unit of trolls to roll out next month...we'll see though.

It's amazing to dip in here every now and then and see how everyone's improving, and pushing that little bit further.

Keep it up

17-06-2011, 01:28

I was doing so well with my painting that I decided to work on Gorbad too, and what do I get for my effort? A dropped and smashed model with my glue being 500 km away...

If only he had been finecast :(

17-06-2011, 01:42
Dammit, looks as though I'm going to have to use a 'third' joker this month for both my armies. I may be able to retract one of them before the end of the month, but it's not looking good.

Great work btw people. I'm proud to be taking part in a project with such dedicated and enthusiastic painters and modellers.

17-06-2011, 14:36
@Red Skullz-I'm really enjoying the dark emipre theme of your new VC army. your new neco is great and based on a fantastic model.

@Emp Norton- Your ogre characters are clean and bold. I've never held the gresous goldtooth model, it must weigh 4 lbs.! I'm psyched to see your madiden guard, that must of cost an arm and a leg.

@Confessor_Atol- Back to work you! your goal is 2500.

@KHolbourn- I like the ungor on disk. Really great progress you've had! I really like your ghorgon conversion.

@Daniel36-Great looking wood elves.Nice archers and characters.

@Kaos- Wow, just wow. Great painting, and fantastic modeling.

@malorian-I like the body paint, and your trolls are awsome!

@Doc_cthulhu- Clean knights, I could see how empire knights could get boring.

@Doi- Nice wolf rider you have there.

@Harvey- Along came a spider! I like it, but I think a splash of color somewhere might help. It might be the photo, but it looks like a lot of green. I really like your idea about wound counters. Nice zombie hoard you have there. Thats a lot of dead flesh. And a very clean empire character. You sir are a machine!

@Clobbersaurus- Nice oompa loompa hot pot

@Purplebeard- Oi, fantastic dwarfs. The full army shot looks great. I need to do another one of those. Sooooooo many cool old dwarves!

@Hilte2- Gret treb you have there, I really like the muted tones you used.

@perplexiti.- good mix of mostly old and new dwarves. and a nice cannon. I really like your army. Nice lizard army too. It looks like some good progress.

@FAbius bile- Nice looking lead bealcher, and I like the piggy hunter combo.

@gamc-nice weapon teams!

17-06-2011, 19:14
Sweet. I really haven't done anything lately.
To much of "good ol' times" and that kind of stuff with Duke Nukem Forever released this month... Terrible, I was just getting in the mood to paint.

Oh, well...

Another round of comments :)

@Fabius Bile: Fantastic ogres and clever use of those awesome boars!
Thanks for the kind words on my damned Stirlanders mate!

@gsmc: Very nice skaven there, try to use some more spotlights next time you take pics :) I use two lamps and white background when I take pics.
Cheers for the comments on my fa..eh solidly built necromancer :D

@Hilte2: Thanks! I`m so looking forward to the SoM releases, as I`m really keen on getting some monsters for this army. Got some proper riders ready, both necromancer and wight kings ;)

@Confessor_Atol: Thanks a lot! I`m so glad that the overall look and feel that I wanted from the start is coming across :D

20-06-2011, 09:20
@Red Skullz (VC): I like these - a bit different, but very consistent. The banner looks suitably mean.

@EmperorNorton (OK): Awesome. If Greasus is only 1/3 painted, he should be amazing when he's finished.

@EmperorNorton (HE): Wow - that is one BIG unit - especially for Elves. These are looking good already.

@Confessor_Atol (Dwarves): And those kitbashed Hammerers look like they were fun to make too. The red sort-of-but-quite-uniform and cork bases tie them together well. Congratulations on smashing the 2000pt barrier and ascending to greatness  We demand more

@KHolbourn (BoC): Great Bray looks like one mean guy, and the Ungor horde looks pretty cool. 1632pts in one month is a monstruous effort.

@Daniel36 (WE): Yes, they are 'awesomesauce' as you so elegantly put it. Those WE are brilliant sculpts and you've done them justice. It makes me question why WE figures always used to be so damn crappy before this range.

@Kaos (WoC): Brilliant work. I love the hooded guy with the energy ball and wings.

@Malorian (O&G): Nice - Trolls are always good.

@doc_cthulhu (Empire): These knights are lovely - toned down and a little understated, rather than blindingly bright. You should be really happy with them.

@Doi (Gobbos): Nice.

@Harvey (O&G): Hehe lots of fun to be had with those Spiders - another big effort at 605pts.

@Harvey (VC): Wow, glad I don't do Undead - 40 figures for only 172pts - bleurgh. They are good though.

@Harvey (Empire): Bright, clean, lovely painting.

@Clobbersaurus (Halflings/Oompa-Loompas): Classic models and good paintjob.

@Purplebeard (Dwarves): You lazy git - we need more! lmao

@Hilte2 (Bretonnians): Superb, professional painting style and standard, as usual.

@perplexiti (Dwarves): Cannons are always good. Yellow is difficult to pull off successfully.

@perplexiti (Lizardmen): The colour you've achieved looks really good.

@Fabius Bile (OK): The purple/grey Ogres are great - as always.

@gsmc (Skaven): Nice basing and good colour choice - the dirty yellow/brown in the first pic is perfect.

23-06-2011, 14:39
Things are looking good for this month.

15 night goblins down, almost 15 more savages, a converted goblin character on spider done, and if I'm lucky I'll finish 5 savage boar boyz :D

How is everyone else doing?

Is it possible to make July a no joker month? ;)

23-06-2011, 15:28
I have done some painting (not alot but some) and have a WiP of my sorc lord but as even half points for him will take me to the 2k mark i wont post until hes done.

23-06-2011, 18:28
I'll be pushing it close I think, ran out of motivation after the first week. Although my missus is out tonight so I think I'll sit down with my stuff and paint while watching some tv.

26-06-2011, 14:14
Got back from my month long uni trip last night, so I will be able to get something done for next month. I believe I'm ahead anyway but sorry for not posting anything this month. Keep up the good work none-the-less folks.

^ same, ive been having a stint in 40k... will have a painting session tonight and hopefully pump out some skellies and dire wolves...

Having just recently discovered this Tale of Fantasy Painters thread I must say I felt inspired and immediately began work on my long-neglected Bretonnian Army. So despite it being late in the season I'd like to throw my brush into the ring with the intention of painting 200 pts. per month. If all goes according to plan I should paint ~2500 by the end of the next round. :D

Carcassonne Dragoons of Gilbert the Bold - Bretonnian Army

Aisha of Albion, Prophetess of the Lady - A simple start and just in time for the impending Storm of Magic.

Highs: First completed model of many to come!
Lows: Her poor steed was subjected to many an ugly painting experiment, but yielded some good lessons for the future.

Sir Ashe's Questing Knights or possibly Lady Fenril's Knights of the Realm (If anyone gets the Ogre Battle references I <3 U!)

Quick comment to say well done to everyone and their efforts thus far...

I was part of last years Tale with my Empire and intend to join the next Tale with Skaven - can someone confirm the next start date (usually Aug/Sep I think???)

If we go straight on, you should start painting 1st of oktober, so signing up is probably done in september.

Actually painting would start September 1st as the first submissions thread will be up October 1st. Signing up usually happens in August.

I stand corrected, as you happen to be right about everything.
