The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2010-2011 Month 9

Hello all,

This is the thread for the work you have done in June and after a week (to give folks time to post their work) it becomes the thread to post your comments on others work and discuss what you are painting in July.

Lots of folks dropping out.

The difference between people that fail and people that succeed in life is quite often that those who succeed were determined to do so ....
... and refuse to quit.

Well done to all of you still in this.

All the very best,

The story so far: (Big thanks to Braad for keeping up the table)

640x480 seems to work best OR use thumbnails
Bigger than this results in the scroll bar of doom for many.

What is it all about?

The aim of The Tale of Painters (TOP) is to help motivate those involved to start and complete an army in the next twelve months.

We made a decision early on to split the Tale into two separate 'halves' one for 40K and one for Fantasy. (Just because of the numbers of people involved) They have continued to evolve in slightly different ways but this is how the Fantasy Tale works.

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months. Starting with their first post on the last day of September 2010 and finishing with their last post on the last day of August 2011. So we have this month, whilst everyone signs up, to collect, build, convert, undercoat and otherwise get yourself ready to go with the first work in progress starting in September.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

At the end of each month a new thread will appear for the painters to post your previous months painting and the rest of the painters to offer words of encouragement.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.
(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end ... it's harder than you think!)

Men and Boys

Because this is harder than you would think ... As last year rather than try and hold everyone to 200 points a month I have decided to allow folks to join in and paint only 100 points a month. Whilst the goal for many remains getting a 2000 point army painted in a year the original and ongoing intention of this whole thing was to encourage and support folks to get stuff painted and 1000 points is better than no points! As a result we have two catagories. 'Men' (painting 200 points/month) and 'Boys' (painting 100 points/month).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : No you are not too late. Yes you can still join in. Just post on this thread saying which army and how many points you intend to paint.

Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes (we are not here to tell you how and when to paint your stuff, it is great to get ahead) BUT we would like you only to post 200 points (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 200 points a month (200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc.) so as not to depress the hell out of those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example oif you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. We love background stuff. Write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

Q : Can Doi drop out?
A : No he can't.

Why is no one posting?

03-07-2011, 07:52
It's really sad to see this thread be open for days without any replies.
None of my stuff is ready yet. Final exam on Wednesday. After that I should have plenty of time for painting (unless my job application goes through, in which case I'll have to move...that would kinda suck...), so I plan on posting later this month.

I've done something! Five greatswords including a musician. 50 something points.

Got... to... finish... the... boys... league...

ARMY : Dwarves: 2000 Points (MEN)

UNIT: 24 Purplebeard Hammerers/Huscarls & 10 Slayers (finished)

BACKGROUND/THEME: A Hold of Dwarves living in the far north of the world, in a region under the terrible influence of Chaos. Led by the ancient and dwindling Purplebeard family, they fight to survive against the unending tide of Chaos. Many Gnomes live and fight alongside them too.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Citadel & Asgard 1980s & 1990s figures.

STILL TO DO: Nothing on these figures. Get a standard bearer for the Trollslayers, and a command group for the Purplebeards.

HIGHS & LOWS: HIGH - passing the 2000pt mark.

POINTS: Counting everything as half painted gives:
156+55 = 211pts

TOTAL POINTS SO FAR : 1820 + 211 = 2031 :D

DICE ROLL : The mighty throng has wilted to a small, but valiant band of brethren. I'll comment on everyone this month.

10 Trollslayers

These combined with some pre-Tale Slayers.

Another shot.

And Hammerers/Huscarls:

No progress on Gnomes yet - but hopefully will have another update this month. Not finished on the Dwarves yet either - still got to finish Rangers and Miners. best of luck everyone!

04-07-2011, 04:46
A little easier for late starters like me to hang in there.

Skaven: 1000 POINTS (boy - although I almost feel like a man this month)

UNIT: Warlord, Lvl 2 Warlock Engineer, 20 clan rats with spears and shield, 20 clanrats with handweapon and shield

BACKGROUND/THEME: Ratty, Ratty, Ratty Rats

BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight from starter set except for the excessive kit-bashing required to swap arms with the standard bearers since I already had two standards

PAINTING: Basecoated brown with simple repaint and wash. some layering and extra detail on the characters that doesn’t show that well in the photos.

BASING: Raw sand with some dead grass flock.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Its starting to look like an army - or at least a warband. I will have to settle down and figure out the pictures. Tried some outside shots today - but still not getting what I want. I suppose if I wasn’t always trying to get the pictures done in a hurry.

Here's my orcs for June:

Units: 15 savage orcs, 13 night goblins w/ spears, 5 savage orc boar boys w/ shields, 2 night goblins w/ bows, goblins warboss on giant spider

Points: 376

Conversions: warboss is from the arachnarok with his wand turned into a spear and part of the platform turned into a shield

Still to do: basing on the boars

Highs and lows: Those savage boars were a long drawn out process over the last 2 month, basically what I did when I had the odd free 5 minutes, so nice to have them done. Most of the rest was needed for my tournament this month. The warboss was just for me though, and I like him :D

05-07-2011, 07:45
Alrighty I got something finished. Next month I'll finish my general, she's almost done. That should finish the boys league for me!

Right so here are 4 more skeletons. I consider them to have light armour, making them 4x5 points under the new TK rules.

These can be put in any of my skeleton melee warriors units, because they have the same color scheme.

Points: 20

I have been gone from this tale for a long time but I havent been idle! The reason I have been gone is that Iīve been abroad and havenīt been able to post pictures (internet is slow in south america...). Anyway this thursday I will post pictures proving im now up to date with this and that i rejoin with my High Elves!

( I might even gone out of hands doing more than 2000pts already but still want to be remebered as one who finished during the year :D)

06-07-2011, 05:22
Hi guys!
I have finally gotten off my butt and decided to finish up my part of this tale!

I didn't get anything done again last month, but hopefully, this will be my

I took some pics of what I'm supposed to paint in July, but I forgot to transfer the photos! I'll do that the next time I get my hands on the camera...

Anyhow, I have re-painted the bases of whatever I have painted thus far. A friend of mine suggested I do it so that the models would pop out more on a desert-scape table. As I've been planning to have one and to eventually build terrain for such a table, I decided to follow my pal's suggestion. I took an army shot:

I do hope to earn back the points I lost to the jokers over the past few months...

@Maglok: That's a brilliant unit filler! Most quaint!

06-07-2011, 11:50

Joker for me I'm afraid.

Army - 2000pts+ Ogre Kingdoms

Units - 5x Leadbelchers (inc Thunderfist & Bellower)
1x Hunter (inc 2xSabretusks, greatskull and bigname beastkiller)

Points = 265 (second half of a two month entry)
Points so far = 1842

07-07-2011, 01:23
ARMY: Goblins - Boys.

UNIT: A Giant.

BACKGROUND/THEME: He's a giant :shifty:.

BUILD/CONVERSION: This was my most ambitious giant conversion to date. Giant the First - weapon swap, Giant the Second - change pose by spinning torso, weapon swap, Giant the Third - spin the torso, completely repose the legs and resculpt the pants (boy was that a pain in the backside), weapon swap and repose the arms.

PAINTING: Same way I paint my Ogres.

BASING: PVA + Bicarb Soda snow.

STILL TO DO: Nothing

HIGHS AND LOWS: This is probably my favourite giant of the trifecta in this army (for now anyway, Storm of Magic may bring in a few more :shifty:) but as usual my pictures are pretty poor.

07-07-2011, 01:25
ARMY: Ogres - Boys

Again :(. No idea what I want to add to the army next...

07-07-2011, 11:53
Dice Roll: 2
Army:1k High Elves (Boys)
Unit: 1 Bolt Thrower
Build/Conversion: Straight out of the box
Still to do: Just the grass basing, like the rest of my High Elves.
Highs and Lows: This was actually done last month, just too lazy/busy to take a photo. However, the army is all done for now. Next 1k points will probably be in the next tale.
Points: 100
Total Points: 1015

I do have some Beastmen stuff I have done, but not sure if I'll get around to taking Photos of it or not (Mainly because they are add ons to existing units, so have got mixed in with the rest of the models now). I'm not sure if I'll get the Beastmen up to 3k points or not, we'll see. I've started a Necron army for the next few weeks which is going to consume my time, then there's all the storm of magic goodies... Hard to refocus back onto the Beastmen, especially since I'm fairly happy with what I've got in the army at the moment and no need to add onto it. We'll see though, I do have some figures I still want to do, so maybe I'll get motivated after I finish off the Necrons.

07-07-2011, 12:41
I've got some things half done, but my painting schedule has gone out the window with the birth of my son Tristan.

Despite my best encouragement, he doesn't seem too taken with Warhammer at the moment, but I'm sure that will change in the future. :)

I naively assumed that I'd get lots of time to paint, with him sleeping quietly in the cot beside me. How wrong I was!

Hopefully the little angel will settle into a routine in the next few weeks, and I'll be able to make it to the end of the Tale.

Well done to everyone else, I'll try and hang on in there!

07-07-2011, 17:30
Just to let everyone know, I'm having a busy time, but I just updated the tables, and I'll make them warseer-worthy tomorrow evening.

For me, it's a joker again. I'm still having trouble to find myself some motivation to paint.

On the other hand, it's very unlikely that I won't finish the last orcs I don't have yet in the next three years or so, so it doesn't matter that much, I guess.

And I did assemble savage orcs, a big spider and some other stuff I had lying around my desk, so that's nice.

07-07-2011, 19:49
Nice armies everyone! nice to see some are still in!

Here is my army as it stands at the moment. Easily 2000 points if i gear it up a bit. I will paint some for the last months anyway though! The only problem I have at the moment is that I havenīt got enough core for a legal 2000 pts army but ill fix that down the road.

What I have:

10 White Lions FC 180
10 Swordmasters FC 180
20 Phoenix Guard FC 330
34 Spearmen/ Lothen Seaguard FC 331/467
5 Dragon Princes, Musican + Champ 180
5 Ellyrian Reavers 92
Teclis, Eltharion + 2 hero chars 475+ a whole lot more
6 Shadow Warriorrs 92
Grand total this far: 1860/1996 + " a whole lot more (characters)

( Sorry for not posting the whole way but I had a few months abroad when i lost track.)

Malorian, Braad, Harry! I'd like to step down to the boys category.
That way I'll have an actual goal for the last couple of months, rather than just have to admit defeat. In order to make it worth wile, I've taken the Arachnarok out of the army. Then I can also throw it in for a 1200+ point army, which is the smallest size for it to be legal anyway.

I've been absent for a while and collected Jokers, but it's been the first three months of my boy's life so there's been plenty distractions :)
Since I've already announces bad news in the Tale I think it's in order to discuss good stuff too. Our boy is now 3 months old and healthy and does all kinds of stuff, like giggling and randomly kicking and waiving while staring purposefully at objects hanging right in front of his face. He also gains weight faster than Morgan Spurlock in Super Size Me.

I naively assumed that I'd get lots of time to paint, with him sleeping quietly in the cot beside me. How wrong I was!

Hahaha! We need to design a better setup for painters to rock their babies with one foot while painting. I've actually gotten a few sessions out of that, since warflag and I discussed it a couple of years ago :D

On to the Tale...

I've recalculated the cost of my army, using the new book, and it reaches 700 pts, give or take, after this posts addition (removing the Arachnarok).

Unit this month: 22 Night Goblins with spears - 66 pts
Total Army size after month: 700 pts
This won't add up in the table, but just leave the other months as they are.

These guys are painted fast and with very sharp contrasts, with most shading and highlighting done with very opaque paint in few strokes. Shields aren't even shaded or highlighted, just blood red to cover, then one pass of white and one pass of flat yellow over the rim and icon.
They are meant to look good enough in third rank or further back, so I decided to leave the eyes unpainted as well.

I've yet to finish the base rims and paint the teeth. Now I've got 42 mouths of Night Goblin teeth to do, so that'll be a daunting session some day :D

Night Goblins:

Army Shot:

And here are a couple WIP photos for this month, showing my attempt to rank up some moar bore [sic].

Kudos to all you dudes still in the tale and actually sticking to your original plan. Now let's keep it up for a measly two more months!

08-07-2011, 10:42
Hello guys

ARMY: Rutgar's bretonnians

UNIT: 20 men-at-arms, including musician and warden

POINTS: 117 points

TOTAL POINTS: 1630 + 117 = 1747 points, getting closer to 2000 points

PLANNED FOR NEXT BATCH: 4 pegasus knights, including a standard bearer

Comments on other people's work will come later. As I previewed my post I noticed that the little drummer boy is missing his drum, so that will have to be corrected.

09-07-2011, 00:17
Table is added!

Thanks Braad.

09-07-2011, 01:57
Error in the table for this month. The 100 points is for my Boys High Elves, not my mens Beastmen :).

Here are my comments:
doc_cthulhu : Cool looking Greatswords. Is that some of the old ones mixed in? You can barely tell. I'm sure you can finish the boys league, only 5 more greatswords to go right?

Purplebeard : Great looking regiments you've got there. Awesome to see some of the old Troll Slayers.

gsmc : Cool looking Skaven characters.

Malorian : Impressive amount of Orcs for one month! Great looking all round, and I like how the yellow tattoos contrast well on the Orc skin. Really makes them stand out.

Maglok : Cool looking unit filler you've got there.

juicytomatoes : Army looks great so far, hope you can bounce back and complete the Tale :).

Fabius Bile : Great looking Hunter and Leadbelchers. The army as a whole looks very impressive and large, especially the Giant!

Doi : Nice converted Giant. Gives me a few ideas on what to do when I get around to doing my Orcs and Goblins (As I intend to have 2 Giants).

Jardain : Stunning army you've got there. I wish I had the Eltharion model, he'd fit right in with my theme.

Solun Decius : Amazing army you've got there. I really like the NMM on the spears, makes them really stand out (Although, how you can stand to do NMM on cheap Goblins I don't know XD).

Rutgar : The Men at Arms look good, but would you consider a wash to 'dirtyfy' the peasants a bit? They seem very neat and shiny to me at the moment.

@Braad - seems to be a bit of confusion on the table again, old chap! I did another two month post, splitting the points for my Hunter unit and the Leadbelchers into two lots of 265 points, therefore I should not have a joker for last month, OK?;)

Fixed both, and a few more!

Now I'm off to paint green!

(Sadly, it's gonna be a green door, not orcs. Though it will be a very nice door, since green is good.)

10-07-2011, 14:44
@Harvey: Congrats! :)

@Solun: Your night goblins look absolutely FABULOUS!

11-07-2011, 08:49
Comments time:

@doc_cthulhu (Empire): Very appropriate moody/grim look.

@gsmc (Skaven): Really like your colour choice - you are building a fair horde of rats there

@Malorian (O&G): That's a big contribution for one month - good work. The Spider Rider and the Savage Orcs look great with the yellow.

@Maglok (TK): That's a nice little something. You could use it as an objective marker aswell as /instead of using it as a unit filler.

The red works beautifully btw. Damn though, that all-metal chest must be heavy!

@juicytomatoes (TK): That lot looks pretty massive anyway, you can't be far short of the points now, surely?

@Fabius Bile (OK): Fun and inventive as always. Nice use of those big ass boars.

@Doi (Goblins): Excellent conversion. I love that he is swinging a chariot. And only 130pts to the finish line now!

@someone2040 (HE): Nice bolt thrower.

@Solun Decius (O&G): Beautiful.

@Rutgar (Brets): Bold figures. I like them.

@EVERYONE ELSE (except those with new babies etc): Get your fingers out and get some work done! :p

@someone2040: Thank you very much. The issue of NMM on 3pt goblins has been raised before, but then again the title of my project log does question my future sanity :)
@juicytomatoes: Thanks man, I appreciate that!
@Purplebeard: Thank you very much!

@doc_cthulhu: Good effort man. Every point counts and those Greatswords are looking great.
@Purplebeard: Gotta love those purple beards! I really like the colorful approach your taking on this army. Those units are looking totally wild!
@gsmc: Wow! Youíre busting through this thing fast! Characters look great and the whole thing together is looking very Ö uhm Ö pestilent :D
@Malorian: Once again my monthly handful of goblins in dwarfed by the efforts of every other O&G painter in the tale. This month thatís just you though. Oh, and Doiís giant, but obviously the same applies! I really like the warpaint on the boars. These new O&G plastic kits are really fun to paint though, eh?
@Maglok: Thatís a very cool little piece. Itíll add character to any unit itís in.
@juicytomatoes: Well, redoing the bases on the entire army isnít nothing. They also look pretty good on the new scheme.
@Fabius Bile: Hunter is very cool. Great use of the new Orc Boars.
@Doi: Very smooth man. The giant is looking absolutely fantastic.
@someone2040: Excellent bolt thrower man. Congrats too on hitting 1000 pts!
@Harvey: Congrats on the little one! Itís the best. Donít count on that routine though :D
@Braad: Thanks for the table man! It keeps us on our toes :D
@Jardain: Army shots are looking good man. Should be a breeze for you to get that army legal in the next two months, right?
@Rutgar: Very nice men-at-arms. The faces are strong and those shields look great.

I've gotten started on the 2nd rank boars and also have some primed and ready Fanatics and Netters on the desk. This should be a good month in painting for me!

11-07-2011, 12:53
Iīm back! And though I havent been following your every step during this trip I can say that all armies inspire me alot, putting me in a difficult situation where I have no idea whatsoever what I can do for the next tale. Now on to individual critics!

Doc.C: I have had loads of problems trying to fit old greatswords with the new but you have done it really well. Now go finish the boys league!

Purplebeard: Though iīm very much into tailoring armies, fluff and all that to the real lore I still can accept that all your slayers have different colors since its actually looking really good! Love the mix of models as well :D

GSMC: The engineer is really well done and good work getting back on track with the tale! Best thing (imo) is that you have managed to make it look interesting with a limited ammount of colors.

Malorian: Nice use of the shaman! The half army you have finished this month looks good!

Maglok: Lovely unitfiller that can be used as pretty much anything! Love it.

Fabius Bile: Tuskboars instead of Sabertusks is a wonderful idea! Well executed as well!

Doi: You made good use of that chriot! Its dynamic, giant and suits it perfectly!

Someone: Clean colors suits a clean army! An easy but effective way of reaching a months goal :D

Harvey: Well done and congratulations! You get the best mini of the month award.

Solun: Crisp clear army with a strong colorscheme. I love it but you shoud not be afraid of posting pics of the big spider along the army, I want to see it :D

Rutgar: I like the lowly peasant colors and transfers are well done for a good effect. Iīve never learned how to use them myself so GJ!

11-07-2011, 18:50
Great work guys, I've been sick so not gotten much done. Will have a bit to post maybe tomorrow, or a couple of days.

11-07-2011, 20:08
My uni trip has kinda thrown me out of sync so I've been rather clumsy and misplaced a month, so again nothing from me for June.

However, I'm pulling my socks up and July's entry is being built as we speak. It's rather big, spiky and it has three heads.

@doc cthuhlu - Keep it going! The Greatswords look ace!

@Purplebeard - That is one characterful army!

@GSMC - as far as I can make out, those are neat, well painted rats

@Malorian - Yup! They're savage alright!

@Maglok - That is a very cool idea for a unit filler!

@Doi- Love the Giant, especially the choice of weapon!

@Someone2040 - Neat Elves!

@Jardain - That is a very well painted, unified army scheme!

@Solun Decius - Great army, love the old school style colour scheme!

@Rutgar - Nice Men at Arms, I'll be doing some next tale!

14-07-2011, 01:25
I am having to drop out... I know we're close to the end but this summer I just don't have the time to paint at all. Every time I think I have time, something comes up and I can't...

So, congrats to all who have made it this far and good luck to those nearing the end. Maybe next time.

14-07-2011, 15:20
@Fechik: If you demote yourself to the Boys category then you will have honourably finished - I suggest you do that!

14-07-2011, 17:57
LOL! That's a good way to look at it. I'll do that instead!

14-07-2011, 19:15
Wow, great work everyone. I will definitely be joining the next Tale.

@Fechik: I see you live in Knox, which is a surprise for me, because I never see anyone within such a short distance to me here on these forums.

ARMY : Gnomes (Empire proxy): 1000 Points (BOYS)

UNIT: 6 Gnome Pony Riders (Knights) - Finished

BUILD/CONVERSION: Citadel 1980s figures.

STILL TO DO: Nothing. Now to make up some more command figures.

HIGHS & LOWS: Getting these finished finally!

POINTS: 69 (1/2 of 138 - not much!)
TOTAL POINTS SO FAR : 366 + 69 = 435.

DICE ROLL : The mighty throng has wilted to a small, but valiant band of brethren. I'll comment on everyone this month.

Gnome Pony Riders unit

FAC Gnome Champion!

All of the cavalry assembled!

There are a couple of wizards to finish and a few cavalry command figures to make up, then onto crossbows and bowmen.

Good work on the Gnomes Purplebeard! Those are nice little models.

17-07-2011, 00:41
@Purplebeard:Those gnomes look awesome! Very cute! As for my TK, yeah, I'm at about 1600 pts, apparently. 400 to 2k - I think my lot will be done once I paint all my characters and chariots.

@Solun: Thanks for the encouragement, mate! :)

17-07-2011, 07:01
I really dont want to have to do this, but im going to have to drop my Orcs and Skaven down to the boys league and drop out with my chaos :(

17-07-2011, 10:40
Thanks for all the comments and encouragement. Finally had some time to comment on you too.

Purplebeard - I'm just a total sucker for vintage models and your painting completes them marvelously. Based could be more varied but other than that these are superb.

gsmc - Good looking characters. The lighting is a bit strong and mixes the colors a bit and I would have like to see the gravel on the based painted too.

Malorian - You did all this in a month! Great job! I wish I had your time... Add some more rocks, twigs etc. on the bases and they'll look even more complete.'

Maglok - Inventive use of bits and pieces. Makes a good unitfiller.

Fabius Pile - I love your paint scheme and use of varied models (the boars are ace!)

Doi - That's some furious giant! Great use of the chariot but the snow looks a bit unfinished. Some dead grass coming through it could look good.

Someone2040 - Clean looking high elves. I'd add another layer of paint on the sides of the bases after adding the grass.

Harvey - Congrats'! Don't paint that one though.;)

Jardain - Solid models looking good. Other than me hating attachment pictures there's nothing to add.

Solun Decius - Such rich colors and great NMM! Love 'em!

Rutgar - Go Bretonnia! Let's hope we'll get the armybook soonish enough.

Purplebeard (2nd page) - I want this. Gimmegimmegimme!

@someone2040: Thank you, I am a big fan of Trollslayers. I would like, one day, to get all of the different Slayers GW has ever made, in one mega unit, but that's a task for the future.

@Solun Decius: I just hope I can keep it up until the end now, I am lagging on the Gnomes and my new Renaissance Dwarf project is a big distraction :D

@Jardain:: Yeah, if you break the rules, you might as well go totally OTT.

@Fabius Bile: Thank you.

@doc_cthulhu: Hmm - interesting point. I think that maybe when it comes to the basing stage, I am tired, fed up, and want to get things done, so maybe I miss little opportunities to add a little extra. I'll bear that in mind for the future.

Anyway, congratulations to all the people who have finished or passed the 1000pt/2000pt line, and good luck to everyone else in the last 2 months!

17-07-2011, 18:31
Between moving house and job hunting i have not had much time to paint so although i have some WIP models i dont have time to get them out and take photos so another joker im afraid.

I think thats 3 in a row but wasnt i ahead at one point?

18-07-2011, 17:57
Well my family and I have all been pretty sick the last few weeks, so my hobby time and motivation have been sorely lacking. But we've all gotten over our illness and I've even managed to finish my stuff!

Dawi : 2000 POINTS (MEN)

UNIT: Runesmith.

BUILD/CONVERSION: No conversion, just the classic mini (I believe he was named Kragg the grim, not sure though).

PAINTING: For the metal, chainmail, with a badab black wash then a chainmail drybrush, Tallern flesh with an ogryn flesh wash and a dwarf flesh drybrush. The gold was Shining gold over black with the dregs of my dryed up chestnut ink.

BASING: Was done the same as the rest of the Dawi.

STILL TO DO: Nothing.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Again, I love the classic Dwarf stuff, and this minis no different. The only problem with him is fitting him in some regiments.

Army so far:

Next month: I’ll do some more artillery, my old grudge thrower I think.

18-07-2011, 17:57
Lizardmen : 2000 POINTS (Men)

UNIT: 20 Skinks and 3 Terradon Riders.

BUILD/CONVERSION: No conversion at all.

PAINTING: Basecoated black, skin was painted with foundation green, then drybrushes of snot then scorpion green. Foundation yellow for the eyes, tin bitz for the metal parts then fenris, shadow and fortress grey for the stone on the javelins. The Terradons were based black, then a heavy shadow grey drybrush, followed by a lighter ice blue drybrush, then I forget what I used as a last highlight, really should write this info down. The wing membranes were simply dehneb stone with a heavy devlan mud wash.

BASING: Sand, painted black with a heavy vermin brown drybrush.

STILL TO DO: Just some little bits and bobs, I left a few of the smaller details off the Skink Cohorts, as these guys are packed in the back ranks of a Skrox horde anyway. I might go back and finish the little things eventually.

HIGHS AND LOWS: No real lows, I 've got a good system going for skinks now, just as I've pretty much finished them!

TOTAL POINTS: 1574 (I must of stuffed up my points total (again)as this is the correct amount I've painted so far)

Army so far:

Next month: Something bigger, but still skink related.

18-07-2011, 18:49
Well, I said I would post something this month, but I haven't been able to motivate myself.
So it's jokers again for me, hoping that next month I'll manage to get back into my usual painting routine.

18-07-2011, 20:00
I really dont want to have to do this, but im going to have to drop my Orcs and Skaven down to the boys league and drop out with my chaos :(

You got to be kidding me? The prcs are sooo close. What's going wrong?

Between moving house and job hunting i have not had much time to paint so although i have some WIP models i dont have time to get them out and take photos so another joker im afraid.

I think thats 3 in a row but wasnt i ahead at one point?

As far as I know, you only need 1 joker so far.

18-07-2011, 21:24
Alright, comments time. As there's not many of us left I'll comment on everyone's work.

Page 1:

@doc_cthulhu: Nice gritty looking greatswords, they look like they've been through a long campaign.

@Purplebeard: More awesome Dwarfs from you mate! The purple beards are espicially nice.

@gsmc: Good rats, nice simple paint scheme that looks great as an army.

@Malorian: Great greenskins man. I don't know how you manage to get so much done every month.

@Maglok: Cool unit filler, looks like they're bringing some looted treasure back to the temple.

@Fabius Bile: Great ogres, I like the boars. Such a good idea.

@Doi: Awesome! I love the chariot club he has, simply brilliant.

@someone2040: Cool and clean elves, nicely done.

@Solun Decius: Everytime I see your bright night gobbos I smile, they look fantastic mate!

@Rutgar: Nice Men at arms.

Page 2:

@Purplebeard: It's always great seeing the classic stuff you roll out every month.

It's a shame so many have dropped out, but oh well. More glory for those of us who finish!

Keep up the great work guys, and I can't wait to see what comes out next month.

20-07-2011, 20:09
Great work folks. Really inspiring. I want to sign up but guess I should really just wait until the new season? What's peoples thoughts on this?

Ego Ninja
20-07-2011, 20:30
@Braad - A few things really, im really busy with commission work at the moment and along with my new found love of Warmachine Ive pretty much had no time for fantasy. Its a shame to have taken them so far to fail at the end, but im over the moon that ive got as much done to them this year as I have.

21-07-2011, 00:20
@RTGamer: I think if you're starting to paint a new army, you can wait till the next tale. If you have like about 400 points of an army lying around, you can join in immediately! Otherwise, what you can do is join in now, paint about 400-500 points, and join the next tale and paint 2000 points. That way, you'll have a 2500 point army at the end of the next tale. :)

21-07-2011, 00:58
Don't expect much from me for the rest of the tale (not that it matters since I'm done), because I've taken up a challenge to paint up a 2000 40K army in 9 weeks.

I'll get the odd greenskin done to be a part, but that's going to be about it.

21-07-2011, 20:52
Since it seems to be announcement day, here comes mine:
I'm on vacation for the coming 2,5 weeks, so I'll miss the start of the next month. I'll make new tables as soon as I'm back, so keep posting!

22-07-2011, 13:22
More comments:

perplexiti: Having a good system for skinks helps a lot. Just make sure to keep with it and pump them out because once you stop you get out of that groove. Great classic dwarf model.

Purplebeard: They look so goofy, I love them :)

doc_cthulhu: Wonderful looking greatswords. Nice and dirty.

gsmc: Great work on the number of models this month. Keep pumping them out like that and you'll be done in no time.

Malorian: Pfft! That 'forest goblin warboss' is crap! You should have at least added a bit of highlighting.

Maglok: It's not many points but it looks really cool. Plus you have something to kill off Nazis (IJ reference).

Fabius Bile: My favorite part is the boar's eyes. Very well done.

Doi: Great converion. Only thing you could add is some skeletons holding on for dear life ;)

someone2040: Nice and clean. Congrats for finishing.

Solun Decius: Your weapons always look so cool :)

Rutgar: I HATE men at arms, and yet you make them look sooo good.

Solun Decius
23-07-2011, 13:35
@Jardain: Thanks man! Would if I could, but the spider's my local game store's display cabinet so I can only include it in photos if I photograph the army there. I'll do that again before the end though :D

@Fabius Bile: Thanks man!

@doc_cthulhu: Thanks dude! I appreciate it.

@perplexity: Thanks man! Glad you like'em. Your runesmith looks great and the dwarf army is really shaping up nicely. Skinks too!

@Malorian: Thanks! They're my favorite part of the models to paint too :D

I just properly finished a bunch of gobbos that had little things unfinished, teeth and base rims. Now my points count is truly for real! I'm also making good progress on the rear rank Boar Boyz that'll be next months submission.

23-07-2011, 18:51
Well it's been a fun ride people, but it looks as though I'm out for this year. I've lost all motivation for my High Elvesies due to me being easily distracted by new shinies. Expect me to return for the next tale however with appearances from Vampires and Dark Elves.

26-07-2011, 22:00
Whew! Managed to "finish" these guys just before the month's end. A little late but luckily I've done July's work at the same time.

Carcassonne Dragoons of Gilbert the Bold - Bretonnian Army

Sir Ashe of Bastonne's Questing Knights

Highs: I built a pile of magnetic movement trays for these and my other knights
Lows: They're still not quite finished to my satisfaction, the heraldy on their barding and the unit's banner has yet to be done.

Lord Gilbert the Bold himself (at least until he trades in his warhorse for a flyer)

27-07-2011, 11:45
Well, I haven't really been updating much, have I? But I knew that was going to happen in this period, which is why I took a huge push with my three Glade Guard units, Lord and Hero in one go, which needed to be done anyways, as I was not going to go to a tournament with an unfinished army.

So in the end it turned out my goal of Empire with Wood Elf allies has taken a turn around to become Wood Elves with Empire allies, but I guess I should be happy I managed to at least meet the goal of 1200+ points.

I see that you guys already put me up for 0 points in the last months, and I guess that I should just keep at that goal, as I have done what this log wanted me to do ahead of time. I won't have much time to consistenly paint in the coming months. I do feel inspired again so when I do have some time, I will try and paint at least one more Empire unit to even out the score a little. I've got plenty of choice for my Empire as it currently stands.

I also don't have too much time to check out the forum, so I won't comment on other people's work either.

I will, however, make sure to get a group shot for the last month, and when we're there, I will definitely comment on everyone's army! Cheers guys!

28-07-2011, 09:36
@perplexiti (Dwarves and Lizardmen): Good work on getting two armies pretty much done. Kragg is a difficult figure to paint well but you have done a good job.

@Nilo (Brets): Good job on getting the Knights done - the effort was worth it :)

28-07-2011, 19:22
First of all, sorry for not commenting earlier. I have been away on holiday, which was nice, now it's back to work :cries:

@doc: Nice greatswords, the only thing is one of the bases doesn't match the other ones.

@purplebeard: those are some crazy slayers, cool to see some which aren't orange. Nice gnomes too.

@gsmc: Nice skaven.

@malorian: I really like that goblin warboss

@Maglok: nice unit filler. Where did you get the casket?

@fabius: Nice ogres, I like the middle leadbelcher best

@Doi: Realy nice conversion work - the giants are coming to get you :skull:

@someone2040: Nice elves, congrats on finishing the tale

@Harvey: that's the best miniature this month :D

@solun: those are some realy nice Night Goblins

@perplexiti: that's a nice runesmith. Also nice skinks, refreshing to see some green lizardmen, never realy liked the blue GW scheme

@nilo: go brets

Replies to other people:
@someone 2040: I wasn't planning to do that, since I like them neat and shiny. May not be entirely fluffy, but what the heck

@purplebeard, solun, jardain, fabius, perplexiti, malorian: many thanks

@doc_cthulhu: I agree, we need a new book

Joker for me this month.

I`m norwegian and with the terrorist attacks 22.july the town I lived in lost 2 young boys and severely hurt several others. So hobby has not been a priority at all.

I will finish my army in due time, I`ve already got over 1800 points done so I should be good but just wanted let you all know.

Oh, and for you guys still churning out the goods this month, great job!

Fabius Bile
30-07-2011, 07:52
Dude, that's awful, I had a few Norwegian friends at university, and Norway really is, or at least was, the last place on earth you'd ever expect to suffer an atrocity like that. Just goes to show, sometimes there are more important things going on than toy soldiers, eh? Stay strong!

30-07-2011, 09:00
Terrible tragedy.

03-08-2011, 11:03
Since we can't talk in the new thread until the end of the week I'll start this discussion in here.

With the start of the new TOFP looking menacing in the near future, what are everyone's plans? Continue with your current army? Start a new one? Sick of all of us and never want to see another group painting project in your life?

I think I've lost my mind but I can see Manly sized extensions to my Dark Elf and Ogre Kingdoms armies in the wake of the recent/upcoming monster kits (I could hardly do a Boys league Dark Elf force when my two mounted Lords surpass the 1000pt mark :shifty:) as well as my first foray into the TO40KP (which I planned on doing years ago, but got addicted to the TOFP ).

The idea of signing up for 5000+pts is daunting though. I'm no Harry/Malorian/Bluesabre!

03-08-2011, 11:49

Don't be a sissy. :p

But I guess I don't have the right to reprimand you when I have decided fairly adamantly to restrict myself to 2000 points of Dark Elves with a Corsair theme (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=311047) this time around.

That's only so I have enough time for the Tale of Terrain Builders and the Tale of Skirmish Game Painters, though, as well as my various side projects.

03-08-2011, 18:17
Well I've got another couple of thousand points for both my Lizzies and Dwarfs and then they will be complete! So I'll just stick with them I think. Being in the southern hemisphere I can't afford to get any new GW minis anyways.

03-08-2011, 18:44
Looks like I need to start a sign up thread for 2011-2012...

03-08-2011, 18:55
Is it that time again.:D

03-08-2011, 22:12
I think Iīll be back for the new one, expanding my DE army although I also want to do a Nurgle themed OK army (decisions decisions!). Currently on holiday but will do it when Iīve got more time!

04-08-2011, 02:03
oh noes! TOFP sign-up season!! :D

After failing 2 seasons/cycles/editions of TOFP I'm carefully deliberating what to commit to for my return to the Tale this year. :p

I can:
(i) suck it up and finally finish my first (and dream) 2,000pt. Bretonnians
(ii) expand my 1,000pt. Night Gobbo army (which I started with TOFP 2007(?)!!) by another 1,000 points
(iii) finish my 2,000pt. Lizardmen (which I started with TOFP 2008(?))
(iv) 1,000pt. Dwarfs since someone gave the models as a gift to me

Malorian: I'll post in the official sign up thread once I've made my decision. :)

04-08-2011, 04:22
Hmm... I'm not sure yet.
At the very least, I'm going to do 1000/2000 points of monsters and magic. Probably thinking 2k. Just because there's no lousy hundreds of low point models to bog you down. I mean, painting a single Truthsayer could be two months if It's just 1k... and I could easily paint him up over a day or two.

I don't know if I'll be down for a full fledged 2k point army though. I have started Orcs, but am not really enthusiastic about them at the moment. I also have no plans to start other armies. So it may be just a bunch of boys league for me.

Coupled with joining the Tale of Skirmish Painters and Tale of Board Game Painters, may be the best bet. Especially with Necrons being said to land later this year, I'll no doubt want to get in on that release.

04-08-2011, 07:14
Will there be an end thread for 'The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2010-2011' where all painted armies will be shown?
"TOFP Hall of Fame" I would call it ;)
Painted armies are always the best adverb for starting a new one :D

04-08-2011, 08:26

Yes, the last thread will show all the armies that made it to the end.
And I believe Braad had an idea about a 'Hall of Fame', but I'm not sure about that.

04-08-2011, 18:27
I think Braad has a link in his sig that points to the hall of fame, no pics though if memory serves me correctly (and it usually doesn't) just a text list of who made it.

11-08-2011, 21:29
It does have a hall of fame in my sig. I also did have the idea of making something more out of it, but for some reason I haven't worked on that...

Would be nice though, something with all the names, points and pictures of completed armies... I still have an unused web-address I pay for each year...
