Welcome to the Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012!

What is the Tale all about?
The aim of the Tale of Painters is to get an army fully painted within the next 12 months.

For most 40k armies the size will be somewhere between 1000 and 2000 points, but you can go higher if you want to (and you're crazy enough)! AI, BFG and Epic armies will be slightly different, but as long as you choose an appropriate sized army for your game system then there's no problem.

Once you've chosen your army, your target is to paint roughly 10% of your army each month. For example, if you've chosen a 2000 point army then your monthly target would be 200 points. The Tale runs for one year (September 2011 to August 2012), so if you stick to your 10% monthly target then you'll only need to paint for 10 months of the year.

To cover the months when you can't/don't paint, you get 2 'Jokers'. You can play a 'Joker' at any time (provided you haven't used them both up!), which essentially means that you don't have to meet your target for that month. They can used for real life events (such as births, deaths, marriages, exams, holidays) or if you're just having a bad/slow month. If you use a 'Joker' then feel free to post a suitable image instead (of a Joker or something funny).

What is this thread all about?
This thread is the first work in progress (WIP) thread of the 'Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012', with your first month's completed work to be posted in the following thread at the start of October.

This thread is for work in progress (WIP) for this month. Feel free to post any WIP pictures of what you're going to be painting this month, army lists, background stories, battle reports, questions, and comments on anyone else's posts. You can post as little or as much as you like in the thread, but please keep it WIP. Do not post any completed work for this month until after the next thread opens at the start of next month.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : No, you're not too late and can still join in! Just post in this thread stating which army and how many points you would like to paint, and I'll add you to the list in the second post. For example, if you wanted to paint 2k of Orks you would put 'Orks - 2000 points'. Please aim to paint at least 1000 points in total (or at least 500 points for each 'Multiple' army).

Q : Do I have to stick to just one army? #NEW#
A : No, you can paint more than one army if you want to! Quite a few people like to paint more than one army at a time, so if you fall into this category then just list each army you wish to paint when you sign up. 'Multiple' armies don't have to be the same size, but please aim to paint at least 500 points for each army, otherwise you're probably better off starting your own plog if you just want to paint lots of random things. For the purposes of 'Multiple' armies, As long as you aim for 10% of your combined total each month then it doesn't matter what order you paint things in. You could paint 10% of each army each month, or alternate armies each month, or 5 months of one army followed by 5 months of another army, or whatever combination best suits you.

Q : Can I paint more than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, and it's great to get ahead. BUT, we would like you only to post 10% (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 10% per month. For example, if you're painting 2000 points that means 200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc. This way you won't depress those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, but we would like you to try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example, if you're painting 2000 points and you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character/tank/unit?
A : This happens a lot. If your character/tank/unit is over 10% of your army you could simply paint him/it/them over two months (the sort of time your general/tank/expensive unit deserves!). For example, one year my monthly target was 200 points and I painted a Stompa (600 points). I split painting the model into (roughly) 3 months of 200 points, posting new WIP shots each month.

Q : Do I have to use my 2 'Jokers' during the Tale?
A : No, you don't have to use them at all. If you can manage to paint/post for the full 12 months then congratulations, you'll have exceeded your target and truly embodied the spirit of the Tale!

Q : What's with the D6 roll in your post?
A : The D6 roll was an idea introduced to help ensure that everyone gets some comments on their work. If everyone rolls a D6 when they post (I use the [D&D dice roller] if I don't have a D6 to hand), then we should have six roughly equal groups each month. Then, if you comment on those people who rolled the same as you everyone will receive some feedback. So, if you roll a 1, comment on all of the other 1's, if you rolled a 2, comment on all of the other 2's, and so on. Of course, if you have the time/want to, there's nothing stopping you from commenting on anyone's/everyone's work.

Also, for those of you interested in seeing what we all got up to last year, here's a link the the final thread of the 2010-2011 Tale of 40k Painters (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=316005).

Been waiting for this thread to open! Basically, I am planning on use the Tale to complete a Tyranid army I began collecting in 2009; I have only used them in a handfull of games- mainly because I don't like playing a grey army. I recently have moved and don't know too many people. So, I figured I would get some paint of my 'nids and start taking them out to the flgs. The army has figs ranging from unassembled to completed.

For the first month I will finish of this Screamer-Killer and I just slapped some basecoats on this FC Broodlord, for a total of 206pts. Sorry about the lighting, it is 2:00am here...

Some WIP stuff. A Venom, Haemonculus and a Succubus.

I'm going to flesh out my army's background soon, so I'll hopefully add that to my first post next month.

As you can see there has been some conversion work to the Haemonculus and the Succubus.

Uhhh... That Venom is nice indeed... Are the edges simply hand-brushed onto the base-paint or did you use some other trick?

A preview of what I will be painting over the next couple of months - A 9 strong unit of Thousand Sons and Noise marines, which I'll make up to 6 shortly. The noise marines are made from a variety of CSM bits and the details are in my daemons log (which has widened to Chaos in general, or should that be Chaos undivided?):

Received the last of my army in the mail last week. Everything is now assembled! I wasnt sure if I wanted a heavy flamer or assault cannon on the LS typhoon so I magnetized it! First attempt at magnetizing anything & i think this was a fairly simple one

A little history about the Astral Claws:

They were formerly loyal to the Imperium but were declared traitors after recruiting to above codex chapter numbers and using the geneseed of any fallen SM. My HQ will be based around Huron & a unit of actual Astral Claws. However, three other chapters were made from the AC, two unknown plus the Tiger Claws.

The majority of this army will be based on one of the unknowns which will be named as the Ghost Claws. This has two meanings as they are all made from revived fallen geneseed so in essence these marines have already died one or more times. In addition, the whole army is a ghost as this was a secret project of Huron's has been kept hidden from records.

All right! Time to get some painting it, I have been waiting to paint these two for about 3 weeks now. These will go towards my 500pt of space wolves.

On the left is a Wolf guard with combi melta and power fist.

The big guy is a custom venerable dreadnought. I bought a blood angels furioso kit because it was the only one the store had. I gave my old ven dread a new hand, and made this fellow. I plan on trying to call the weapon a wolf cannon, that will count as whatever I tell it to be on paper. The melee weapon is the weird spear the BA get, but I trimmed the back off, glued it in place, and put heavy flamer bits on both sides. Imagine a blade that is super heated by fire and bam, you have a str 10 CC with a flamer attachment.

There is a good chance that all 500 of my SW will be dreadnoughts outside of this one model... if he gets painted. (I have 7 dreadnoughts)

My daemons will be some bloodcrushers, possible a DP, and possibly a plague hulk.

Here's the first part of my WIP goal: finishing 3 Chimeras (vision ports, flamers, turret details, and pigments) and taping off and spraying a Hellhound, which will then be re-decaled and finished to match the same vertical stripe markings as the Chimeras.

The first infantry squad of the 541st, still paint in progress. Not pictured will be a second infantry squad, which is still primed. I need to start the grenade launcher and heavy weapons team for the WIP squad to get them caught up.

As planned its a joker from me.

After some advice from the army list subforum, I came up with this...

Dante

5 x Sanguinary Guard
Chapter Banner (some kind of grizzly trophy)

Furioso Dreadnought
2x Blood Fist
Flamer

5 Jump Pack Death Company
3 Power Weapons

Tactical squad

Storm raven

Not competitive but lots of fun and most of all, fairly cheap :D

In fact, I'm feeling so guilty about getting a month's worth of painting done in one day, that I picked up some rangers, a blister of Harlequins and another Farseer. If I can get my Swordmasters done for the Fantasy Tales, I'll work on them, just to make me feel like I actually did something this month.

@Green Fevaah! yeah, you should feel guilty, I want more of that kind of models.... No seriously, looks great.

As much as I would love to join, I'll be abroad for the next 2 more months, being at home the 2-3 months thereafter than probably abroad again for the next 4 months, and who knows what will be after that.

Although I might just drop some pictures when I'm home again....

Keep up the good work

Misterboff, please can you change my entry from White Minotaurs to Brazen Minotaurs? Thank you :)

Raven667, I'm digging that old school Farseer! Ahh memories!

Well, so far I have made good progress on my tale (even though I'm cursing myself for putting so many armies down).

I dabbled with a brightly coloured army a few years ago but never really got it started - I'm now going for my original vision of Brazen Minotaurs.

I gave these Terminators some red to break up the bronze armour. They need freehand done on their shoulder pads but nearly there. I intend to give them blue OSL for the eyes and lights (cameras?) on their suits.

Does this scheme work? Is it too gaudy? I would appreciate feedback.

Progress on an Imperial cruiser and Ork escort too! :)

Sheesh, after moving from Florida to Kansas and not having looked at my paints for ~5 months I realized I need to go to the store in order to get units done. Woe is me, I need 'oop' paint. I know something the paint ranges overlap- any direct matches for tentacle pin and chestnut ink?

I don't think that those Brazen Minotaurs are too gaudy. They look like they need a bit of shading and highlighting but otherwise I think it'll work, they're certainly no more gaudy than GK! Couple of points is that I would suggest giving them darkish bases as that'll help set off the brightness and the second point, and this is unforgivable, is that there's mould lines on that power first (so maybe on the rest of the miniatures too) and you haven't drilled the assault cannon barrels!!!

I'm still not certain which 200 Points to do First (), however, attached is the (rough) scheme it will be adhering to...

(It's not finished in these pics in terms of claws and eyes, base... etc) but hopefully you get the idea :)

Any ideas on what colour to edge the base in people? (hopefully the base itself will have ruins and snow details on)

Keep it coming 40k painters, it's all looking good!

How are you doing the snow? My DE army has patches of snow on them which I've done to be like it's thawing out with a mix of GW snow, PVA & white paint. I did the side of those bases in brown as the tops are mainly brown too. My marines have full on snow on them which is made with bicarbonate of soda and PVA and I did the side of those black which sets it off well.

I was thinking of the Bicarbonate of Soda and PVA method.
Ideally have some Ork/Guard/Marine body pieces littered across some of the bases (as well as some sprue/Building bits) Paint the parts that will be exposed, then apply Snow mixture.

Think that will work?

It's going to be an Urban krieg army in the winter months, got the idea from enemy at the gates , with Stalingrad etc.All the bases are going to be pretty scenic, with heavy weapon teams made up in ruins.

Very troop heavy, but with chimera's,russes and heavy quad guns that are 'count as' griffons. All the standard troopers are the gorgon troops, so need quite abit of clean up.

Here's my colourscheme..

@Setha, nice colourscheme, quite something different from the standard dark brownish scheme. Enemy at the gates is nice. Will you be including some snipers? (Just wondering)

yup ive got some snipers modelled up, just got to sculpt some kind of ghilie suit on them, ones standing , ones leaned over terrain and the other is scoping.

They were fun to convert, but the sculpting is going to be a pain.

I agree that the Fantasy Tale always seems to have more going on, but unfortunately I won't be helping the 40k Tale much because I'll be using my first JOKER this month.

I've been painting solidly for the last three years of 40k Tales, and managed to paint up around 4000 points of Orks and 2000 points of Dark Eldar. Therefore, I'm taking a well deserved break this month (and maybe next).

Me and the wife will be going to Games Day UK though, where I'll be picking up a Runtbot (to count as a Warboss in Mega Armour) and a Supa Kannon (to be used on a Skullhamma) from Forge World ready for the Tale...

These pics are from a few days ago, but here you go anyway. First tank I've ever assembled - I played GK an age ago and daemons ever since the codex came out... so never painted a tank before. At this point there were still a few bits that needed smoothing over.

I've added a rolled up camo net to the back, but otherwise the model is as it comes out the box... oh, and the smoke launchers have been trimmed to fit their new home. Currently a good way through painting on the camo scheme... more pics when that's done.

Ok, ill bite.
Im a terribly unmotivated painter, so im going to try to make this as painless as possible.
Ill stick to the 'boys' category... AND make the split over 2 armies.
500 points of space Marines
500 points of eldar pirates (dark eldar)

That should keep me intersted fr a while....

http://i926.photobucket.com/albums/ad106/Scythern/S7300742.jpg

so heres a picture of what im after. White and purple marines (The Sundered Scythes), a chapter of my own devising. A model painted over a year ago to test the colour scheme to show you what ill be aiming for.

Also some eldar pirates. A mish-mash of eldar, dark eldar, and assorted cloaks. the interntion was to use them with dark eldar rules, as a sort of proper old skool malicious eldar warband.

Here's to a productive tale all round!

OK, I'm not altogether sure I get it but I'll throw my hat in the ring!

I've always been a very slow painter and suffer terribly from shiny new thing syndrome to boot which leads to shelf after shelf of half assembled/undercoated/half arsed models festering in my garage.

When the new GK plastics came out, I knew I wanted me some of those.

I'll try and use this thread as the kick in the backside I need to actually finish stuff!

I'll start this month with filling up a troop slot with a basic gkss and rhino.

Ooh look, that dog has a poofy tail!

Edit - I'll aim for 2000 points.

RL stuff bogging me down, but I've got concepts in my head just waiting to get done.

Warriors: I'm rethinking the Poisoned Tongue paint scheme as it seems to be everywhere. Snakes will be the theme for them.

Wracks & Haemonculi: Egyptian theme with scorpions. Mummy feel on wracks.

Wyches & Reavers: Chains! Bought 2 meters of chain for this. Let's see what I can do with that. Paint schemeI don't know.

Was thinking about snowy cityfight for bases, but I can't find cheap ruins to sacrifice for this.

If you or a friend has any Cities of Death buildings you should have plenty of spares to chop up. I used some clipped pieces of CoD girder on my Bloodbrides bases (with snow too).

I thought I'd write a quick blurb about what I will be painting. I have signed up to do roughly 100 points of Sisters of Battle. (To be honest I would prefer to be doing a "Witch-hunter army", as I have loads of Inquisitorial stuff).

So anyway, I bought the Witch-hunters codex when it came out in 2003, but didn't really do very much with it, I bought a few inquisitorial bits and SoB of eBay and over the years managed to paint up a full 15 models of the 100 or so that I own. (See the attached file!)

This month I will be painting another squad up, 10 Battle Sisters, I realise this will put me over the 100 for the month, but I'll pull it back for the next couple of months. I promise!

Hopefully within the next few days I'll be able to add some WiP pictures and maybe even work out how to insert images. :D

So far I've de-sprued & trimmed quite a chunk and organised the pieces together and attempted to figure out some sort of list for my 1500 points (which will hopefully end up closer to, if not over 2000 when finished), but I don't see me having a functioning army at the end of it, more a bunch of models that I wanted to paint.

But I'm struggling this first month...between commitments made (mates wedding this weekend, his stag do a fortnight back, several dentist trips in the last 10 days of this month) and crap that just keeps coming up (like my camera refusing to not ####-up and needing taken to the shop twice a week) I'm hoping I can pull off painting a Ven Dread this month (which is still on its sprue...washed, but gathering dust so needing another cleaning) but I still haven't found the time to sit down for a few hours and start adding colour to the pieces, nevermind a basecoat...and I'm ashamed I'm not making the time, even in the evenings.

Come Monday, I'm going to start work on the venerable, try and take my mind off the torture under the dentist the next day.

And I've got to stop de-spruing and trimming pieces that I don't plan to glue together for months! It's just depressing watching all the plastic containers just pile up, maybe I got to stop using see-through tubs...

So far from what I've seen from everyone else here, it's going to be nice to see the first months work finished!
But does anyone have any good ideas for inspirational music to paint to, or even podcasts? Funny works, but not when aiming for delicate work, so Ricky Gervais is off my mp3 for now.

Got mine undercoated and then had my first go on a spraygun to get a boltgun metal base on. It left me both pleased and disappointed to be honest. Pleased that I can see that this will speed my painting of units right up, something that's always been a problem for me as I just find it so dull. Disappointed for two reasons; ONE, that I can see that I'm going to have to shell out some cash on a good airbrush because, TWO, the GW spraygun is a hopeless piece of crap. Seriously, his did this thing get past quality control? It works for about 10 seconds!

Anyway, here they are so far -

118482

They've had a drybrush of mithril silver and then a couple of thin washes of a 60/40 blue/black mix.

It's not as blue as I'd have liked, and I think I'll have to do a careful application of pure blue after I've retouched the silver.

I think that we get the first week of the month to post so 7th?

Jonahmaul is correct. I'll open a new thread on the 1st of each month, with the previous month's entries to be posted by the 7th of that month. So on October 1st I'll open the Month 2 (Sep complete/Oct WIP) thread, and everyone will have until the end of October 7th to post their entries.

If you can't get pictures till later because your camera doesn't have batteries or have been lost/stolen/eaten by a squig then just post details and upload pictures later.

I'll (hopefully) post my entry first each month for people to use as a template (although I'll be using a Joker this month).

I went to Games Day today and picked up a Runtbot and a Supa Kannon (to put on my Skullhamma), so I might be tempted to build them sooner than I'd planned...

Learning how to paint again, mistakes and oooh that looks quite good now.

I had in my head a plan. The colour scheme was going to be Liche Purple , black and bone. Just those colours. Stick to the plan deus stick to the plan.

So I pick up my fist model and paint it with Hormagaunt purple just to see what its like. As Im painting it Im already thinking jesus this it horrible , its too light!!
So I finish the purple bits anyway and pick up the next model, Stick to the plan deus. I paint it Liche purple. Oh no its not right either.

Im depressed.

I pick up the first too light model and start messing about with leviathan purple wash. After 3 washes Im actually starting to like it a lot. In fact yes! this is it this is what I wanted all along!!!
Probably.
Now I start noticing things about the models, that I never paid much attention to before, like the fact theres an undersuit and that could be a diferent colour yeah thats what I`ll do. So black or a light colour.

Now I cant decide. I try one half black the other light.
I like them both maybe I could keep the split scheme for the undersuit?
Then a flash of desperation I can do it all!!! Thats how I`ll diferentiate between squads! God Im good, one squad will have light one will have dark and the other will have the split scheme.
Finally a decision has been made

Now what colour will I paint the skin........

The one on the left is just liche purple hard to tell theres any colour on it at all tbh. The right is a much more final hormagaunt purple with a lot of leviathan purple washes and some highlights with hormagaunt purple/white mix.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Deusmex/DSCF2891.jpg

Couple of shots of the chosen scheme under diferent lights, top one is the daylight bulb I paint under, bottom is the set up use for photos, which is a bit rubbish if Im honest. I need something better. ho hum.

Comments and feedback about my dodgy undersuit ideas are appreciated cos Im not 100% convinced yet its the right thing to do.

That's a tricky one...

Going by the colour wheel, I suppose you should be looking into a dark yellow or orange colour to provide contrast.

Is it just the photo, or is the colour very gloss? If so (and if it's on purpose) then you might also want to experiment with having the undersuit in a matt finish. Again, it's a matter of providing contrast.

As for skin, I would paint them a very pale elf-flash with almost white highlights. Once again, a matter of getting a contrast with the armour.

Just my contrast obsessed opinion, of course...

The whole thing is a bit shiny because of the washes and inks I use. I will be giving everything a coat of matt varnish at the end. Looking now at the photos I see 2 diferent colours going on because of the diferent lighting. This is confusing so I will stick to the one light source for fututre photos. The bottom picture is closest to the actual colour on the model.

Orange is something I never considered , but may well try on a character or my hellions. Ty for that. :)

You could stick with cooler colors instead of going for contrast. Perhaps a light grey (almost white) skin color?

Great minds.

Shes not quite as pale as she looks here but might need a wash anyway with blue or black to add a bit more definition.

Im thinking of adding some white sections to the armour now. :/ these are gonna takes ages I think.

Oh yeah, that looks fantastic. I actually don't think you need any white sections on the armor. Between the white cloth and the pale skin the mini is bright enough, and with the purple armor and pink/red hair you've definitely got enough color.

I love the wrought iron looking metal you've achieved for those pipe-things on her back. Is that a tin bitz base?

EDIT: What are you planning for her base?

Yeah its tin bitz, just needa a little boltgun metal for highlights.

Base wise Im thinking of getting these

Yeah, those will be perfect. A little pricey, but they'll look great.

Due to work stuff I didn't get ANY painting done last week.

I'll struggle to get my squad done for the end of this week.

Would it be in keeping with the feel of the tale if I post them up once done and not have to use a joker? Next month is only 5 termies so I'm feeling confident of getting back on track.

You can 'buy back' Jokers if you make up the points, so the best thing to do would be to Joker September and then post double (Septembers unit plus Octobers Terminators) for October to buy it back.
