View Full Version : The Tale of Dread Fleet Painters Month 1

31-10-2011, 20:17
Here we go then fella's.

This is where you post all your finished work from Month 1 (October)

I won't muck about with special rules for these threads.

If you have finished stuff ... post it.

If you have painted more than one boat ... post them. (Post as much or as little as you have got done).

If you have only just discovered this thread and want to join in ... do it.

If you want to comment ... say something nice. :D

Really looking forward to seeing everyones finished stuff.

All the best,

Month 1

The volcanic island, Dwarf wreck, Dwarf dirigible, ruler and Grimnir's Thunder.

As posted in t' other thread, painted up the Bloody Reaver and some Islands:

I also painted the ruler, turning templates and wind marker but didn't take pics. (they're pretty bland, gold spray with a brown wash to give an antique gold look)

01-11-2011, 02:16
I got two ships completed in Month 1, which I think is pretty good since I am usually a very very slow painter. My minimum goal for november is the Heldenhammer and Grimnar's Thunder, both of which I started last month.

01-11-2011, 07:25
Just the Black Kraken from me this month.

01-11-2011, 09:27
As much as I dislike the models and game, I love what people have done to them so far. Zark the Damned, you have a very John Blanchy approach to your paintwork. Very original.

And here but also outside of this log, I have seen so many good water and lava paint jobs, it astounds me. Good job everyone!

01-11-2011, 11:01
Here's my entry for the month, Curse of Zandri. Apologies for the bad pics.

And just because.. My son has been begging me to let him help me paint the "Pirate game" since I got it. So I decided to let him help. He's base coating the Islands and bases for the ships.

01-11-2011, 17:56
Here is my contribution for the month

Some islands and Gimnir's Thunder.
Lots of fun!

02-11-2011, 10:46
From landlocked Durham, NC, five ships sailed out. I also painted a few islands up, but don't have pictures taken, so ships it is this month.

The Sea Drake

The Flaming Scimitar

The Curse of Zandri

Grimnir's Thunder

Here is my first months efforts, and since I only got the box on the 21st of october (birthday) I'm happy with my progress so far :)
used NMM technique on the pyramid just gold for the other bits, wish i had done nmm on all now though

Sorry guys, going to be slightly delayed (a very nice start huh?) due to fever and tooth problems getting in the way. I guess it's not scurvy, but very similar in that I'm unable to concentrate on anything other than the pain :D :( But don't worry me hearties, I'll have the witch-doctor conjure myself a potion, lace it with rum and drink it until I get the deeds done for the month, and do the work for the next bit.

02-11-2011, 21:59
Been tough going with a new baby and a move overseas in two months time. Try to get the Bloody Reaver done next.

03-11-2011, 17:22
Great looking Dreadfleets everybody. :skull:

Ps. Ahh reminds me I got some Islands and shipwrecks to post...

And just because.. My son has been begging me to let him help me paint the "Pirate game" since I got it. So I decided to let him help. He's base coating the Islands and bases for the ships.

That's awesome :D He's even holding his tongue the right way for painting :D

04-11-2011, 16:08
Sorry for the late update, I thought I lost my camera, until I found out that my sister had borrowed it.

Anyway, here my first ship done!

06-11-2011, 10:47
Sorry in advance if I'm not supposed to post pics of unfinished stuff, but I've put the first lick of paint on my DF stuff, and thought I might share what I have now (well, there's other bits and bobs half painted, but not interesting to show):
I'm rather happy with the result for now.

06-11-2011, 14:07
Finally finished all of my terrain pieces...

07-11-2011, 08:39
I'm definitely investing in a light box once my next pay comes in. My picture quality seems to degrade every time I've got monthly submissions to do...

Month 1: Skabrus + auxilliary

Month 2: I'm thinking I'll try and knock over all of the terrain (or at the very least, the islands) this month.

07-11-2011, 16:05
So for those who did the terrain, did you follow the White Dwarf guides? I basecoated one island with Charadon Granite like it said but then it says to dry brush with Tausept Ochre which doesn't look right to me as it is a lighter brown color and most of the pics look greyish to me. Just wondering what colors some of you guys used ...

And for some reason it is taking me longer to paint one ship for this than anything I have ever painted before. I want to blame my four month old son but I have a sneaking suspicion I'm getting slower with age as I just turned 40. :(

07-11-2011, 16:16
Nope didn't follow the WD guide, as I don't have a subscription,
But I did use some browns and ocres mixed in with the layers of greys.

07-11-2011, 17:11
Well that does give me some hope so I guess there's nothing to it but to do it. I can always paint over it if it doesn't turn out. Thanks.

This thread is so amazing! All this painted dreadfleet in one place.

Special mention to N810 for turning the first month's work into a proper terrain project :D and getting all that out of the way before touching the fun stuff. As always great terrain from him.
Also Fanny and Confessor: for great terrain and clean Grimnir's Thunder painting and Fechick: for great pics and an excellent Curse of Zandri (especially the base!!), and for recruiting elves to help with his seasonal toy making.

To everyone else: "Great <enter ship you painted> <enter display name>! Keep up the excellent work!

Here's a WIP of my first ship, the Black Kraken:

I guess the OSL would look better on a black background, but you get the idea.
I'm going to try to NOT go all out perfectionist on this project, and cut corners here and there so I'll be able to actually finish this. I still want to go into certain details and try out effects and stuff. Since each piece is a one of a kind, and not part of an army, the freedom to experiment should be pretty good.

I'd also like to specifically mention that I'm open to destructive critisism. :D Even if I may be offended by it, I really want to know what I can do better and where I may be missing something.

12-11-2011, 14:00
Thanks Solun Decius :D

and Holly @%$^ that OSL looks Amazing !!!

Ps. next up are the game aids (ruller. wind token, and turn guides)

13-11-2011, 22:32
Here's my entry for month one - The Shadewraith. Almost done, with the base left until the oths are ready.

Not too bad in the end, especially since I really fell out with the model. I've never had so many issues painting something before.

I've had to strip it twice due to undercoat problems.
The paints I wanted I couldn't get as the shop had closed down.
The paints I used reacted in ways I've never experienced before.
Etc. Etc.

But still, I think it's turned out okay. It pops in the flesh, as it's painted in Fluorescent paint. And it slightly glows in the dark due to a Revell Night Colour wash. It just needs a couple more washes to truly glow at night as well as the day.

Next up - The Black Kraken.

Great work everyone and that last Kraken is awesome!

Here's mine, Ill post for Month 1 and 2 as Im going away to india now. Hope that is ok.

16-11-2011, 11:40
Like so many other I also started out with the Shadewraith.

Curse this northern cold light and the worthless macro-function on our new digital camera (she insisted we had to have the PINK model...)

Classic paintjob on the ghost ship. First thought of giving it more of a rotting hulk paintjob, but decided against it as I thought this would be quicker, and I felt that the background and artwork were very specific on the ethereal part.

White undercoat, couple of layers of thraka green, drybrush with fortress grey and skull white. The sea was also pretty easy - just a couple of layers of blue wash and then some blue drybrush highlights topped off with white wave crests.

Valuable lesson learnt? Don't paint the ships prior to assembly as per GW instructions. Henceforth I'm assembling them fully before painting. Now working on the Heldenhammer.

16-11-2011, 11:47
Just popping in to say good work everyone! I'm in the middle of exams (last one tomorrow) so I'll try to get some comments up afterwards.

16-11-2011, 12:53
Wow Great job guys. :D

Water looks great on the Wraith,
and like the origional paint job on the swordfish.

16-11-2011, 15:38
Like so many other I also started out with the Shadewraith.

Unlike the others, I started with the HeldenHammer and the Bloody Reaver, as I expected them to be the most difficult to paint (well, the BR is easy, in fact) and I prefer to start difficult then finish with easy stuff :p

Your shadewraith is cool, but I'd (I'll, even) have it glow in the sea under it, I think. It would have been nice it it was clear plastic, would have been nice to do it with inks.

I started with the Black Kraken because it was supposed to be a quick simple scheme that would get me started nice and easy. Then I got the OSL thing stuck in my head and had to go for that, making this far from the simple starter it was meant to be.

I agree with Satan on painting the ships fully assembled. I'm afraid some of the sails will have to painted separately though. Very nice Shadewraith btw.

Thanks N810 & Papa Dan! Super clean painting on the Swordfish and Seadrake PD and the base is great. Very impressive!

16-11-2011, 16:05

Oooooh, the shadewraith painted with glow-in-the-dark paint or LEDs would've been top on the cool scale...

Thanks for all the positive comments guys! Loving all the ships in here!

16-11-2011, 17:16
I'm actually thinking of trying and put leds in it. Problem is, I know little and less about electric stuff, and have of course never done such things...

16-11-2011, 22:31
Not sure if I'm allowed to post here (delete if you need), but I've 5 finished sets with my team,

All laid out nicely:

I have 5 more sets being painted so, so I can post more pictures if I am allowed to in this thread.

Great work everyone, I like your alternate colors Papa Dan!

16-11-2011, 22:40
.... Wow. That is a huge amount of Dreadfleet! Why are you painting up so many, if I may ask?

17-11-2011, 05:26
Commission work obviously ;)

Karak Norn Clansman
17-11-2011, 17:46
Solun Decius, that off source lightning effect is excellent. Picture saved to inspirational folder. The water is too blue, I think, and the bronze look a little flat. Now there's some destructive criticism. :D

02-12-2011, 18:32
Are we starting to post our 2nd month's efforts?

04-12-2011, 14:34
I'm assuming we are continuing on this thread for this months effort?

For the month of November, I've finished the Flaming Scimitar?

It was a fun model to paint, and I really enjoyed painting the sails and the "wind" elements of the model. I was only after finishing the model did I realize that I glued the flame Djinn upside down:(

Anyway, pics!

Until next month then.
C & C is always welcome.

And a kraken is done!

Very nice Kraken bearded one and Grimnir and Znadri are really well done. I especially like the way you do the sea.

Do you mind if I give you one pointer regarding the source lighting?
The light source itself (portholes in this case) has to be MUCH brighter than the areas it lights up. The greenish glow around the portholes is well done but because the portholes themselves are equally highlighted it doesn't convince the eye that they're actually the source. Instead it looks like the whole area is a little bit greenish (seaweed or something?). The darkest color on the porthole windows themselves should be equal to the brightest color from the highlights on the surrounding area. Then go from there up to white.

@Karak Norn Clansman: Thank you very much for the comment and sorry I haven't replied earlier. I was going to finish the Kraken and then reply but I haven't gotten around to it yet. You're right that the sea is too blue, and although I've yet to highlight it, which will fix that to some extent, I'll still take the comment to heart and make it darker and more greenish. The bronze parts are certainly flat but that's just because I haven't done any highlights there yet :D

07-12-2011, 11:44
Well, time to leap onto the bandwagon here if we're not getting a new thread :D

Pride of Averland. Old Marius got jealous of the Heldenhammer and spent much of his vast fortune comissioning his own version.

Castle island plus another shipwreck.

Game aids. Technically I did these in month 1 but didn't take pics.

Sorry for the bad shots, my Camera ate the first set and I haven't had chance to set up my rig again.

07-12-2011, 11:51
Thats cool, thats the most different colour scheme I have seen on one of the ships I think. The colours suit the ship nicely, good work!

07-12-2011, 12:49
Nice origional paiint schemes Zark. :D

19-12-2011, 15:00
Oops I forgot I painted my navigation devices a while ago...
