The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 2 (Oct painting and Nov WIP)

This is the thread where you post what you painted in October.

Please post nothing else for 1 week, and then after the first week of Oct please feel free to comment on the work of others.

Mission Statement:

It is the goal of The Tale of Fantasy Painters, and all Tales for that matter, to help fellow gamers paint their armies by providing them a place to find support and encouragement.

The Tale:

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months.

The way it works is that painting would begin in September and then in the first day or two of October a thread will be put up where you can post what you had done in September (this trend will continue for 12 months). You can include as much information as you wish, but some good things to include along with the picture are: the units, the total points for that month, conversions, highs and lows, plans for next month, and a number between 1 and 6. The number is important because it has to do with feedback.

A week after the initial thread is created you can then (and are encouraged to) add feedback on the work of others. Due to the large number of people who take part in these tales it is suggested that you only comment on those that have the same number as you. Of course if there are ones that really catch your eye, or you are a trooper and want to comment on them all, that is obviously awesome.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can Ďplay a jokerí and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.
(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end ... it's harder than you think!)

Men and Boys:

Because this is harder than you would think ... As last year rather than try and hold everyone to 200 points a month I have decided to allow folks to join in and paint only 100 points a month. Whilst the goal for many remains getting a 2000 point army painted in a year the original and ongoing intention of this whole thing was to encourage and support folks to get stuff painted and 1000 points is better than no points! As a result we have two categories. 'Men' (painting 200 points/month) and 'Boys' (painting 100 points/month).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q : When can I join in? Does it have to be at the start or can it be any time?
A : Join in any time.

Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes, but if you can do this time after time then you can probably commit to more. Feel free to sign up multiple times to reflect the amount of work you plan to do (for example sign up for Beastmen X2 and submit 400 points a month, or Beastmen Men + Boy submit 300 points a month).

Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example if you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : What do I do when I'm done and the tale isn't over?
A : First thing to do is to include an army shot (everyone loves an army shot) and then it's up to you. Either stay on and paint a model now and then to take part, or start planning for the next tale. If you are really cocky then you can sign up for ANOTHER army is see if you can blitz it in time.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. We love background stuff. Write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

Q : Can I *insert something here that results in more painting*?
A : A thousand times yes!!!

Q : Can Doi drop out?
A : No he can't.

I'm afraid that due to getting a 60 hour/week job I'll have to drop out. Cheers to all for giving me awesome stuff to look at so I can remember what I'm missing though!

ARMY: The Sons of the Mountain, 2000 point Ogre Kingdoms Army

UNIT: 3 yhetees (Plus I've cleaned, assembled, greenstuffed and based the rest of the army, barring a couple of characters)

HIGHS: Really pleased with the fur, took me a few goes to get the right colour i wanted but I'm happy with the look I've ended up with. My main concern was how to paint them in an arctic scheme without having them blend too badly into the bases. As it is I think they go together quite well. I'm also pleased with the ice blades, though i ended up wasting a fair bit of work on them. I started by trying my hand at some blending, but then, when answering the door mid-painting, I inadvertently discovered that actually a simple watery coat of ice blue over an astronomican base followed by some edge highlighting actually looked better than what I'd accomplished in an hour or more of blending. :o

LOWS: Finecast. FInecast. Finecast. I actually thought they looked quite good when i opened the box. I cleaned them. I greenstuffed them. I started painting them. And then I found air bubbles. Lots and lots of air bubbles. And bits of flash. Lots of bits of flash. I think i must have been asleep when i prepped them. :) Anyway, I lost a lot of time to fixing them on the fly, which was hardly ideal.

POINTS: 142

NEXT MONTH: Started work on a unit of 6 bulls.

Ok here goes! Heres my ogres. I really enjoyed painting these models the new ogres are amazing

Total this month-1186 on lords and heroes

Highs
I love my beast magic slaughtermaster conversion using a spare arm from a hellpit abom. The tyrant and butchers were straight out the box so didnt get any conversions.
I also enjoyed my 1st attempts at snow and the painting article in the dreadfleet wd came in handy. A few people may notice that my wip pics last month had a few things in that I havent submitted. I decided to leave these out as my mournfang unit has another box to add. My scraplauncher isnt based and I want a 2nd giant before I add my 1st. These will make an appearance very soon

Lows
Nothing really. Ive enjoyed the ogres but I do think that they have distracted me from my tomb kings abit

P.s can I buy back my 1st months 2 ogre jokers? As technically I didnt change to doing 3xmens til the 2nd month? I did do my intended 1xmens pledge in the 1st month...

Army: Empire Dogs of War - Thalenchar style

Unit: The first of the Bang Bang Brothers, Big Bang (or, in game terms, a Cannon)

Points: 100 on the nose

Highs: It was fun painting the leadbelcher and I'm looking forward to using him in a game! I particularly enjoyed painting the face cover cloth thing. Had decided on doing that on all my Ogres but never got around to it, really, so this is a good way to start seeing how I liked it. And I enjoyed it!

Lows: I need to take better care removing mold lines in the future. Also, my Green Stuff-Fu could be better, the mask could be better. Oh well, I'll see how I'll do when I paint the other brother, Lil' Bang!

Still to do: Snow on the bases!

Background: One of the two Mercenary Leadbelcher Brothers, travelling together troughout the Old World looking for employment. Assisted by their gnoblar assistants who do all the menial tasks like lugging around the ammo and the blackpowder, the two Ogres can focus on what they enjoy the most: pointing their weapons towards the enemy, light the fuse, and yell " Bang!" at the top of their voice when their guns fire.
There is some animosity between the brothers as to which one of them is Big Bang and who is Lil' Bang. Many an overly inquisitive soldier has been eating for adressing either of the brothers as Lil' Bang. If it's just one of them there, it's best to just call him Big Bang to be safe. If both are there, just call them Bang Bang, or " Oi, you!".

Total Points for the Month -330

Highs - Very quick to paint, I like the birch seeds as leaves

Lows - My son repainted one of the wraiths for me (see blog for results). Also wasn't happy with shield on original blood Knight and have now changed it.

Still to do - Finish new shield or re attach the old one. Decisions, decisions!

Army: The High House of Chains, 2400pts of Druchii
Monthly Target: 240 pts
This Months Total: 270 pts
Jokers Used: 0

Completed: 8 x Repeater Crossbows including standard bearer and champion (95pts), L2 Shadow Mage with Tome of Furion and Black Dragon Egg (175pts)

Background: The ranks of the Household Guard are bolstered by the experienced Ereth Bale-eye and the 5th Cohort, bearing the feared 'Death-rain' repeater crossbows. The resurrection of the House of Chains continues unabated as the Herald walks the lands of Naggaroth again. The Emissary has returned to do his masters bidding.

Conversion work: Crossbow champion and standard bearer converted using spare parts from the White Lion Chariot sprues. The Emissary has been fully converted from the SoM Chaos Sorcerer using various Dark Eldar and Black Dragon rider bits.

Highs: Just look at that Emissary! He makes me happy every time I look at him. The conversion came off perfectly and he was a pleasure to paint. The crossbows are also looking good - the old plastic warriors definitely look better as crossbows. What's also nice is seeing the army starting to take shape now, with 3 completed units and 2 characters.

Lows: Almost almost had a varnish disaster with the Emissary. Luckily it wasn't too bad and was easy to fix. Still, pant-changing moment there. It took a little longer to get him done than I would have liked as well, mainly due to a sick wife and squallling little wriggler of a baby.

Next months WiP: 6 Dark Riders (146pts), 5 Harpies (55pts), and the first of the second unit of spears - probably about 7 or so (49pts)

Army: at least 1000pts Expansion of Tomb Kings

Total Points for the Month: 20 Skeleton Warriors a 4 pts incl.command group make 110 pts

Total Points for the Tale: 560 pts

Conversions: Wanted all of them with the typical Chepesh (Egyptian sword) so I had to buy a box of tomb guard. Together with the swords included in the skeleton warriors I could equip all of them.

Highs and Lows: Painting skeletons is no real fun but as you can see I added a piece of terrain for fun (and for the Tale of Terrain Painters) .

Plans for Next Month: Hope to do the Necrosphinx or 10 TG with halberd and a Necrotect or a ssc.

Tomb kings

Total this month-901 points

Highs-the casket of souls is a gorgeous model so I had alot of fun painting that. It was also good to paint fewer things compared to last month. I like how nekaph came out and how my unit of tomb guard are filling up. I might get another box of them next payday.

Lows- got abit distracted by ogres and didnt think id reach my target. After a late night painting session I managed to slog through 49 skeletons and get to my target. Also having camera issues so might have to sort out new plans for that. Currently the weather is rubbish so theres not enough light before or after I go to work.
so here goes
Casket of souls-135
Tomb scorpion-85
3 tomb swarms-120
Nekaph-120
9 tomb guard-117 49 skeletons-324
Plans for next month-archers chariots and settra himself! Possibly some more tombguard if I get round to buying them!

TOTALS
ogres this month-2504 points
Tomb kings this month-901 points

Currently as I stand doing 600+ points per army per month means I might run out of models in 3 months. I better get saving need to buy new things

ARMY: The Army of Avelorn, Men's Level Wood Elf Army

I'm working on my Tale of Painters Avelorn Army on Warseer, and today is the day to report my monthly contribution.

UNIT: Nineteen Glade Guard

HIGHS: I think my overall painting has improved from my last army, and continues to do so. The basing looks great. Every model has eyes. I also wanted a banner that was easy recognizable as my flaming banner, so I bordered it with red and yellow, drew the elven rune for fire (thanks Google!) on it and put some jets of flame around the rune.

LOWS: I'm not sold on the brown wash over green, and may have to go back and fix it. The Glade Guard models also suffer from the same molding era as a lot of the Beastmen models, in that they have quite a few vague, half-formed details on the models that I find to be a pain.

POINTS: Nineteen Glade Guard + Full Command and Flaming Banner = 262 Points. Overall points are 262 + 350 for the Spellweaver for 612 points.

NEXT MONTH: Dryads, which are surprisingly fun to put together.

Army: Wood Elves Autumnal
10 Eternal Guard = 120 points
Dice roll: 5

The Good: Getting these figures done in early OCT. Camera\lighting setup is getting better, my pictures are no longer looking like I am taking photos in a dark room.
The Bad: Not having the time to finish the remaining EG in the whole month of Oct. This is my last movement base that comes premade from GW. From here on out I need to either buy more on EBAY, or make them myself.
The Ugly: I just noticed some wash pooling in one of the figures. Will probably have to go back and fix it while I am working on the other 7 figures of my EG. I think I went a little wild with the static grass, some of the bases look cluttered.
The uncertain: The figures still need something to jazz them up. Maybe I will experiment with some freehand around the edge of the cloaks so they don’t look so plain.
November painting plan: I have 5 basic EG, a standard, and a musician that need to be finished. That is another 100 points and change. After they are done I will go back into construction mode. I need to fiddle with the details on my wild riders, bring my spellsingers in line with the rest of the figures, Build some more Glade Guard (I will provide a tutorial for the bowstrings), and make 2 or 3 unit fillers for blocks of EG.
Here are the EG.
Is the picture too large? I can cut it down another 25% if it is.

6 Stradiots with full command, shields, bows, spears
Paymaster
Hireling Wizard (lore of beasts)

Points: 160 + 126 + 45 + 65 = 396pts

Total: 435 + 396 = 831pts (out of 400 for month 2...)

Pretty much they are all standard figures. The Stradiots (Cavalry) have converted bows made from Night Goblin bows and plastic tubes, and their leader is a Heresy Centaur.

Unfortunately my FLGS closed down so once again I am back to taking pics in the living room...

ARMY : High Elves (men's category) and Demons of Chaos (boy's category)

UNIT : 30 spearelves, full command, 10 swordmasters of hoeth, champion and musician, two silver helms / Skulltaker

TOTAL : 505 / 150 (1487/550)

HIGHS : I am finding the elves fun to paint, actually - I wasn't sure I would. Like how they look together so far!

LOWS : I DID get 30 bloodletters done for this month but couldn't quite get the basing finished. My leg's been hurting me pretty bad with the cold months setting in and it makes me less motivated. Bah!

Still to do : I'm sort of terrible at banners, and this high elf unit has a pair of crossed sticks to inspire them. Will have to work on that. Next month will probably have 30 white lions finished, and 30 bloodletters. But we'll see, I may wimp out and paint the elf general (Tyrion) instead. Which would be a total cop-out. :(

Painting: As the Bulls last month, I've chosen grey skin rather than the new human-tone. I have added some fur decorations with green stuff and straps/bits of leather to attach it. Should've gone bigger, in hindsight, but that'll be for the next batch.
Highs: Faster than expected once again. Especially the mournfangs.

This is due to an extended period of fever/massive toothache. Not fun... Hopefully I'll slap myself on the head and drink loads of vitamins to overcome this Nurgle's rot. And finish those mini's (and possibly even take back a portion of this joker).

But ya'll who have updated: it's looking great! Inspiration in massive amounts!

ARMY: Rutgar's Lizardmen army, boys league

BACKGROUND:The ancient lizardmen city of Chaqua, the city of gold, was wreathed in mist, it's goldlined roads and pathways overgrown and disused. The Old One Sotek, the Serpent God, decided that this was not acceptable. Chaqua must be reclaimed in the name of the Old Ones and the lizardmen race. Sotek therefore ordered up a great sacred host, solely tasked with reclaiming Chaqua.

In the great temple city of Itza there was much excitement when movement was spotted deep beneath the dark waters of its holy spawning pools. However, excitement soon turned to consternation...

Now, a little known fact about Sotek is that he is colorblind. Normally, this isn't a problem, the other Old Ones keep an eye on him and makes sure that everything goes according to the great plan. This time however, the other Old Ones were busy pondering the mystical ramifications of a women's beach volleyball game...

In Itza there was much debate among the city's skink priests, because the lizardmen who kept emerging from the spawning pools were all green. The skink priests decided that the best thing was to send the whole lot off to Chaqua in a hurry, led by the youngest slann in the city, Ztlocutec. As luck would have it, Ztlocutec was also colorblind and therefore wouldn't notice that anything was wrong. With Ztlocutec leading it, the great host marched out of Itza and set course for Chaqua.

UNIT: 10 saurus warriors with hand weapon and shield - 110 points

TOTAL: 110 points

HIGH: I have finally started my lizardmen army.

LOW: None

STILL TO DO: The edges of the bases, just haven't decided on a color yet.

Braad
02-11-2011, 22:53
Well, it seems I've been slacking...
First of all, a joker for me.

Second, I'm about to post the new tables to Malorian, so he can upload them in the first post. I hope I got everything right...

And since people wanted some stats, here they are:

In the first month we painted a total of 21056 points. Last years first month was 30127,5 points. That's 70% compared to last year.

This year, 25 jokers were posted (this number may end up a bit lower, since I remove those who will not post anything at all), compared to 22 last year.

However, 69 entries with models were made this month, compared to 156 last years first month. That's only 44% this month compared to last year.

Though we had far fewer painters then last year, colonel kane trine made up for that. A lot.

40 persons didn't post anything.

To show the progress during last years, here's a graph. Though 2010 started well, in the end it was quite comparable to 2009. Since 2011 starts at the same level as 2009, hope is not gone yet!

Lord Dan, I also want to thank you for the time you took on your graph. For those that didn't see it, it was all done up on excel. Unfortunately it was me who didn't know how to post it here whereas Braad does all the work for me.

I think going forward I'll leave this up to Braad since it's been his role since the beginning, but a tip of the hat and a raised glass for stepping forward and stepping up :)

alright, this month i got 20 marauders with flails finished as well as a sorcerer on foot.

HIGH: chewing everything out after midterms. i like the cloth color that i came up with for all my sorcs and will probably do the marauder's banner the same way when i decide on an icon for the unit.

LOWS: spilling some chainmail paint :( as well as a lack of paint variety, i only brought about a dozen, i was missing a few from the test model i had painted before, so i was not too pleased with the way the wash came out.

points: marauders: ~120 with command
sorcerer: ~150

LOWS: Large models, hard to photograph with in macro. Too many different layers of armor. I know its a funny thing to say but...

I know I'm not participating this year, but I've been poking my head in anyways. I saw your comment there and I don't if you know it already, but...

Check if your camera has manual controls. If it does you can open the aperture considerably and increase the shutter speed. This will allow more light in at once (bringing more area into focus) while not overexposing the image (thanks to high shutter speed).

Thought I might help, plus it would be really awesome to see those spectacular Ogres all in focus.

MONTH 2

ARMY: 1000 points High Elves

BACKGROUND: This army defends the kingdom Avelorn, in the north of Ulthuan. After centuries of fighting many elves have died. Especially in the province Avelorn on the border with Nagarythe. The remaining elves mourn for their dead brothers and sisters. I imagine them defending the last shrines and sacred places.

UNIT: Mage.

BUILD/CONVERSION: I bought a mage body, head and arms online. But when I assembled the model I decided that the arms with the long sleeves and the combination of the sword and staff didnít look aggressive enough. So I replaced them with arms from the dragon kit. It took some cutting and green stuff to make it fit. The flaming head is from Malifaux, with added green stuff flames at the back.

PAINTING: The High elves have changed the colours of their clothes. They wear darker colours, like shadow warriors. This is a token of their great sadness. Gold, dark brown leather and tan robes will be the unifying colours. Each unit will have two spot colours. In this case red and light blue.

BASING: A Micro Art wasteland cavalry base, with added flames from a Malifaux flame base.

HIGHS & LOWS:
Low: I have been really busy at work. I had started painting a chariot. In the last days of October I realised I couldnít finish it on time. So I decided to do the mage instead. I wanted to do a freehand design on the cloak. But as you can see on the collar I was too stressed to paint straight lines. Maybe I will add the freehand later this month.
High: I am glad that I got the mage ready and I donít have to use a Joker.

Orcs & Goblins booster Tale force, month 2

Dice roll:
1
(I'm just going to comment on the 1s this month, I tried doing all last month and had to give up)

The painting schedule has been shaken up somewhat from month 1, as I've changed my plans for how many Pump Wagons to make and what upgrades to give them, and I've started converted up a roadblock worth of Wolf Chariots and I've also bought some more Night Goblins on eBay. So we'll see what gets removed from the list.

This month:

- Snotling Pump Wagon with Outrigga (55 pts)
- Wolf Chariot (no upgrades) (50 pts)
- Doom Diver conversion (80 pts)
- single test-scheme Savage Orc with two hand weapons (9 pts)

Build
Lots of conversion work here.

The Pump Wagon uses the bottom plate, handle support and wheels from the old version, with sides from a Boar Chariot, crow's nest from the Ogre command sprue and a whole lot of balsa wood. The second mast is an old Night Goblin standard and the sails are carton from a miniature package. Main mast are a couple of Ogre standards and a bamboo skewer. Plus it has a pile of Snotlings.

Wolf Chariot has a slightly converted chassis, Chaos Warhounds with spikes shaved off and green stuff fur pulling it and old 4th edition Goblins riding it. Annoyingly none of the 4th ed grots have short bows and only a couple have spears and they are hard to get hold of, so none of the crew have the correct gear.

Doom Diver is basically a Foundry model (platform itself and the Goblins supporting it, plus the one with the bellows trying to create updraft). The Goblin getting ready to jump is from the 4th edition Doom Diver model and the other two crew are from the Grot Tekkies (I think) pack you can get on the GW website - originally they came with the 2nd ed 40K Pulsa Rokkit.

The Savage Orc is not converted. Phew!

Painting
I'll just mention the skin on the Savage Orc, which is my new recipe:
- undercoat a light grey
- base layer O+ Heavy Green
- highlight Gunship Green
- wash with Black Green Ink
- re-highlight Gunship Green
- final highlight Intermediate Green

Bone is also a new recipe:
- base layer O+ Heavy Brown
- wash with Umber Shade
- highlight with Basic Skintone

And the force so far:

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q438/tarjeiaasen/Orcs%20n%20Goblins/CIMG1852.jpg

Points so far:
238 + 194 = 432

Highlights:
Pump Wagon with sail came off looking great, I think. Also, I came in 5th overall at a tournament this month, also taking best greenskin player. Yay me.

... and lowlights:
The Warhounds really don't have the same overall shape as the old, dull wolf models. Amongst other things, they are much taller over the back, meaning that the yoke goes much more up than it should rather than straight ahead.

Next month:

9 more Savage Orcs, another Wolf Chariot and something else.

Man, I hate to do this, I seem to have had a big test once a week for the last 6 weeks so progress has been slow. I've been working hard lately, but what I have to complete this month is this:

3 boars (including command)
troll
unit filler (done till basing)
bolt throwers (!!!! way more than I thought it would be)
Wurrzag
6 savage orks

on top of that, I'm trying to paint dreadfleet models too.. oh and a little warmachine :( What was I thinking!

Project: Skaven Men's

This Month: 40

Total: 235

All I have done for the month is a single, lonely rat ogre for 40 points.
I've been hard at work on my screaming bell, however, and should be done with it by the end of the month. Bell + Seer is worth 440 points base, so that will more than make up for this month's showing. I've attached a WIP shot of the bell in addition to the completed rat ogre.

Here is some w.i.p. shots on snotlings pumpwagons. I'm on scedule, although nothing is finished yet. The way I work on these snotlings is, I like to do all the trimming of moldlines, conversion work and basing in one go. So I'm not sure if I need to joker...

ARMY: Dark Elves

UNIT: Sorceress w/upgrades

PAINTING/CONVERSION: Stock standard kit. I tried a new skin recipe starting with a Dheneb Stone/Astronomicon Grey base and worked up through combinations I couldn't repeat of the above + various flesh tones.

HIGHS: Quite happy with the paintjob.

LOWS: Not happy whatsoever with my pictures. Again. Investing in a light box when I get paid...

STILL TO DO: Nothing.

POINTS: 185

TOTAL: 370

NEXT MONTH: Supreme Sorceress on Dark Pegasus and a BSB conversion inspired by Emperor Norton's BSB from this month (only not a corsair).

Army: Nippon (Empire), Boys.
Model(s): Shugenja (Battle Wizard, lvl 2) Lore of Shadow
Points: ~130
Conversion: None, it's straight out of the pack from perry-miniatures.com
Highs and Lows: Painting white was kind of hard, but once I figured it out, I really enjoyed it, and I love how it turned out!
Still to do: The base, still haven't decided how I want to base this army. Also, I might change up the legs and feet a bit.
Next month's plan: Core Infantry

Wait, did I only post my Empire and not my other armies? Crap, old age is coming sooner than I expected! After all that painting you'd think I'd make sure I did my posts on here properly :p I'll post the pics first thing in the morning, when I get back at my PC...

Hey Malorian, please can you change me to the boys category for my Dark Elves, also you don't have me down for Ogre's, also in Boys

ARMY: Dark Elves

UNIT: A Hydra

PAINTING/CONVERSION: Mainly Dark Angels for scales and Knarloc for the skin.

HIGHS: Finally getting it done and a generally positive experience with finecast as think this would've been very hard to put together in metal.

LOWS: General lack of motivation with painting and this in particular, I started doing it back in August and it's taken me an age to do as it's been so stop start. I feel that my Elves might fall by the wayside as I'm really not keen on them at the moment but hopefully I'll get some motivation back.

STILL TO DO: The handlers and the base.

POINTS: 175

TOTAL: 175

NEXT MONTH: Finish the Handlers and do some Harpies to take me up to 200 points (2 months, 1 joker)

Army: Ogre's......coming soon! I'm struggling to get the colour on the skin, I've sprayed them Army Painter army green and done some washing with devlan/thraka mix and highlighting with knarloc green followed by purple wash but they're too dark for my liking. Going to try highlighting up with knarloc again then gretchin and a mix of gretchin and rotting flesh to finish then some washes over the top of that to see what I can come up with. If anybody can offer some advice on this or another way of painting nurgle skin I'd be really grateful as motivation is lacking due to frustration!

And here are the pics I apparently forgot to upload :p

Army: Warriors of Chaos

Unit: Three Chaos Warriors with shield and the rest of my Sorcerer

Points: 103

Highs: This is probably the army I'm having the most trouble with keeping motivated. However, this is an idea I've had for a while now and to finally be working on it is nice. I'm sure motivation will come if I just keep plugging (it's only 5 models a month, tops, after all.

Lows: Me finishing the sorcerer. Suffice to say I'm not happy. I'll call him finished for now as I don't want to do more work on him and move further away from how I want him to look, but I can see myself going back to him in the future.

Still to do: tidying up the bases, as per usual.

Background: A Clan of Warriors of Chaos devoted to the Fire Aspect of Tzeentch. Fire is ever-changing and changes everything it comes into contact with. These Warriors embrace fire and flame as the physical manifestation of their god.

Army: Skaven - Clan Mortkin (Mostly Moulder)

Unit: 32 Plague Monks

Points: 249

Highs: Getting this unit done! I don't often use plague monks and I didn't particularly enjoy painting this unit. So the High would be getting them finished. Never would have happened without the Tale. Thanks guys!

Lows: No real lows here. Unit is done, I'm fairly happy with the result, they look ok on the table, nuff said.

Still to do: What else but the bases...?

Background: Reinforcements for my Skaven Expeditionary force, looking for shards of rare purple Warpstone.

Dice Roll: 2

Next up: Probably some slaves. I'm entering a small Doubles Tournament in December and if I bring Skaven (as of yet undecided, check my blog), I need to bring a large unit slaves. And here I was thinking I could move away from doing big infantry units and paint some characters for next month... Oh well!

Im wanting to last the entire year with my tomb kings and ogres so next month im only doing 300 points of each.
Please change me to
Tomb kings mens
Tomb kings boys
Ogres mens
Ogres boys

Thankyou

You don't have to change every month. Consider the catagory 'boyz' or 'men' to be your final goal, not your monthly allowance.
Also, if you paint more in earlier months, that sort of buys you 'credit' to paint less in later months, so that you don't have to buy jokers.

Well it's the 9th down here in kiwiland, so here's my comments.

As I haven't posted anything last month I'll comment on everyone's work this month, and start the dice roll next month.....maybe.

Page 1:

@Laborious: Great looking Yhetees man, shame about the finecast issues though.

@colonel kane trim: Good looking ogres, very bloody butchers which is always nice. That's a power of work for your ogres and Tks as well m,ate! Well done.

@Zujara: Awesome trolls! You've done a great job on them.

@Thalenchar: That is cool man, such a good idea.

@Roostmanuva: Nice work mate.

@EmperorNorton: Sweet, that firebelly looks the buisness man, shame about finecast though, I haven't gotten any and probably won't be after hearing all the issues with it. Great dark elves too, that blood is a nice touch.

@JackDaw: More nice Delves, the skin being almost the same as the armour is a cool effect I reckon.

@DAGabriel: Nice skellies, I wish they all came with the Chepesh too, it just looks better.

@Tekore: Good to some Wood elves in the tale. They look good to man. The wash issue, it looks like it pooled in some places, maybe you put too much on? I tend to have the same problem with the more open flatish surfaces.

@daismith906: That blue skin looks nice man, is your Tyrant getting a red hat?

@andrewdrexler: Sweet, more woodies, looking great man.

@Confessor_Atol: Heh, heaps of ogres this tale. The cav look great, they do have a lot of armour for ogres don't they. Good job on the beasties too.

@azhagmorglum: Black Orcs look great, the squig hunters look superb. I've always liked the cymbal one with the bandages on his nose.

@Rikk: Pics are pretty dark, but from what I can see they look really nice.

@Zark the Damned: Great looking DoW, those birdmen are crazy! Are they on 40mm bases?

Page 2:

@doomscape: Nice elves, loving that green. Skulltaker looks great too.

@Frejdruk: Good work mate, espicially the grey skin.

@Gargobot: Cool Horrors, I really like those minis.

@Rutgar: Yay! More Lizzies, that green looks great man.

@Kharn_21: Nice marauders, maybe the armour could do with a highlight or something on the grey?

@dagreenmoonboyz: Awesome, simply awesome. That skin is really well done mate.

@Great horned owl: Nice work, those flames look cool.....or hot, whichever you prefer.

@gogs78: Great elves man, the golden armour is espicially nice.

@Avian: Cool pump wagons, great work.

Page 3:

@Kaos: Sweet, more Dwarfs. They're looking awesome man, great work.

@juicytomotoes: Hehe, cutest ashigaru ever! And well painted to boot.

@JohnnyG: Nice dirty rat ogre, and I'm looking forward to seeing the bell finished.

@Sharpy195: That's a load of skaven all right! Well done.

@iamjack42: Really nice elves mate, superb.

@Morglum Necksnapper: Those are some awesome pump wagons man.

@Doi: The skin on that sorceress is beautiful mate! Well done. The ironguts look good too man.

@Fabius Bile: Great ogres man, I'm loving all the different skin tones being used for them.

@Arduhn: Cool looking mini, where's he from? And that white does look nice.

@Jonah Maul: Nice Hydra, I'm a sucker for scaly green beasties.

Page 4:

@Shandowner: Awesome minis mate! Cool theme too, And those bases are fantastic.

@Thalenchar: The flames on the backs of the cloaks are really nice, not too sure about the colour around the eyes though, is it meant to be glowing eyes? Or just painted on the helmets? Nice grubby skaven too, well done mate.

Comments time, great work everybody!

Page 1

@ laborious: I love those yhetees, very nice fur. A tiny bit as criticism, would like to see a harder contrast on the weapons, perhaps a final highlight in pure white?

@ Colonel Kane Trine: Have a problem with the pic quality but stand in awe and draw my cap!

@ Zujara: Can`t say nice Trolls `cause Trolls aren`t nice. Good paintjob though.

@ Thalenchar: Cool idea, nice execution and very glowing colors, love that style even if it never will be mine.
Regarding that chaos warriors, I would like some more shadows on that white, the cloaks with fire effect are well done.

@ Roostmanuva: good painting, cool basing. The idea for the blade is great but it still seems a little bland. Perhaps a glow effect?

@ EmperorNorton: Very cool, love nearly everything about that firebellyÖexcept the nails which seem too white. But that is a very minor detail.
The Corsairs are top notch, only the string of coagulated blood should drip vertically.

@ JackDaw: Impressive effect, good painting, especially the face of the emissary. Do not know if i would choose it for my models, but very good.

@ Tekore: Nice unit, love the basing.

@ daismith906: grunt, more ogres. They seem to be blue from the cold? Nice job;-)

@ andrewdrexler: fantastic, only a little more matte spray please.

@ Confessor_Atol: Nice paintjob for models i don`t really like.

@ azhagmorglum: Hope nobody here has a red-green blindness. He would miss a great sight.

@ Rikk: Really love those O&G character models and you did them justice. That snake is well done.

@ Zark the Damned: Do the pirates! Good job on the rest of them, but I don`t really like the centaur. The bases seem a little uniform and sterile.

Page 2

@ doomscape: The painting on the skulltaker is nice, but one or two colors to many. The Helves are looking good but the green could use another accent.

@ Frejdruk: and more Ogres, the paintjob is top notch, still don`t like the models.

@ Gargobot: perhaps it is only the pics, but I miss shadows and highlights.

@ Goat of Yuggoth: You forgot to paint one of the jokers!

@ Rutgar: I love Lizardmen, I hate those pics.

@ Braad: Does he have to draw a joker when he is working so much for us? What do you think, guys?

@ Kharn_21: The overall effect is ok, the single warriors are missing contrast and depth, especially the helmets.

@ dagreenmoonboyz: luv da boyz and de spyder!

@ Great horned owl: Nice Mage, how about a little OSL around the flames.

@ gogs78: Good painting, love them eagles. Jewels are good, too.

@ avian: I write the comments as soon as the pics come, so it is not so much work. Love that doom diver conversion. The painting is nice, but, perhaps it is only the lighting, the greenskinns could use a little more contrast, one whiter highlight? Don`t really know, depends on the look in reality.

Page 3

@ Kaos: lovely ďold schoolĒ dwarfs, one proposition (?): the horns on the helmets could use some thinned devlan mud on their lower halves to make them more live like.

@ juicytomatoes: it is frustrating with those low point values (skeleton warriors for 4 points!). Love the overall effect with done bases.

@ JohnnyG: Lovely rat ogre, well painted. How about some green patina on the bronze parts?

@ Sharpy195: That are a lot of rats, can`t say much bout the painting, but in their mass they look cool, well done.

@ perplexiti: love those lil guys (both dwarfs and skinks), but the picsÖ.

@ iamjack: nicely painted Ellyreans, but reallyÖdo the bases.

@ Morglum Necksnapper: WIPs looking great,am expecting a lot from it!

@ Doi: ShiverÖ don`t you think a slightly blue skin tone would have been more appropriate? And regarding those testosterone bullies, the designer seemd to have been inspired by Obelix? Nice basing!

@ Fabius Bile: The hammer and the leather is Öwow. Don`t really like the skin tone and the flames are so lala. The mournfang cavalry looks very impressive but I think I found what I donīt like about these models, their center of gravity is way to high..

@ Arduhn: Think the Nippon theme will look cool. The base is a minus Ė a themed base would be much nicer.

@ Jonahmaul: a suitably toothy Hydra, don`t forget the basing.

@ Shandowner: lovely bases, where did you get them?? I really like the effect of your Spartans,

Ok, so comments for everyone first:

Page 1
Laborious - nice looking Yhetees - I'm still not sold on the models themselves but you've done a really good job of making them look good. The bases finish them off nicely.

CKT - Those ogres are coming along nicely, I particularly like the BsB with his plethora of trophies.

Zujara - nice and simple scheme, I really like it.

Thalenchar - I'm not sure about the blue gnoblars, but the Leadbelcher himself looks ace - I'm a fan of the mask especially.

Rootsmanuva - that vampire is ace, very nice kitbash and the ethereal finish to him sets him off nicely. The wraith unit looks good, I like the effort you've put into each one. The ethereal finish seems to be working for you - kudos.

EmperorNorton (Ogre) - you should definitely feel happy about how the Firebelly turned out, he's got a really good smooth finish. The base is great as well, that red/brown doesnt clash with the model and sets him off nicely

EmperorNorton (Dark Elves) - you already know my opinion on these guys ;) Glad to hear you're finding the motivation for them.

DAGabriel - the fishing skeleton in the background made me chuckle - but the warriors are looking good as well. Kudos for going through and giving them all the khopesh/chepesh, it really defines the look of the unit

CKT (Ogres) - all looking good mate, I'm constantly impressed with how much you get painted a month

CKT (Tomb Kings) - again, astounded at how much you get done. I actually prefer your Ogres, but the TK are looking good as well - the conversion of Nekaph is particularly nice.

Tekore - some solid work there mate, well done. The basing does look good, very evocative of the forest floor.

Daismith906 - Frost giant inspired Ogres? Win. Very nice smooth finish you've achieved on them, the detailing is very good as well.

AndrewDrexler - I really like these Eternal Guard, I think the simplicity of the cloaks works in their favour. Nice use of birch seeds on the bases as well.

Confessor_Atol - very nice mate, the verdigris effect on the armour is a particular higlight

AzhagMorglum - good quality painting fella - I'm a big fan of the yellowish tone on your regular orcs, looks a bit more 'natural' if that makes sense. Not as cartoony as the GW gree is what I'm trying to say. The B.Orcs look good as well, the use of red for the armour was a good idea, livens them up nicely.

Rikk - the gobbo shaman is a great conversion, well done.

Zark the Damned - Wooooo Birdmen! I love all the Dogs Of War range so I'm looking forward to seeing more. The Paymaster has also come out nicely, the yellow really pops.

Page 2
Doomscape - Skulltaker is a little too colourful for my tastes but thats just a personal thing, not a criticism of your skills by any means. The elves have still got that nicely retro feel to them, looking forward to seeing more.

Frejdruk - nice work on the Mournfangs - the only minor thing I can see is that the skin tone is very similar the grey of the weapons - maybe an extra highlight on one or the other would help?

Gargobot - Ah this brings back memories of painting stuff for GW stores - the colours, the basing, its all great. Very nice smooth finish on them as well, can't wait to see more.

Rutgar - nice start on the Lizardmen mate, nice to see green ones instead of blue

Braad - I'm amazed at how you managed to make that banner look just like a graph... ;)

Kharn_21 - Sorceror looks good and the marauders are nice.

Dagreenmoonboyz - great work fella. I'm not a fan of the OnG range, but you've pulled out some quality work on the characters especially and made them look pretty damn attractive.

Great Horned Owl - very nice conversion, I might have to steal it at some point....:shifty:. The flames on the base under the staff are a nice touch as well.

Gogs78 - solid work mate. The Phoenix Guard have come out very nicely indeed, the use of that imperial purple was an inspired choice.

Avian - The pirate pump wagon is awesome. I got funny looks in work because of the chuckling. The doom diver is also very good. Kudos on the warpaint on the Savage Ord - are you planning to do that across the unit?

Page 3
Kaos - nice finish on the dwarves, the blue really pops and has a lot of depth to it.

Juicytomatoes - I'm a sucker for anything Japanese and these are amazing.

JohnnyG - That's a nice muted scheme you've chosen for the Rat Ogre, looking forward to seeing how the Bell turns out.

Sharpy195 - that's an impressive amount you've done in a month, and to a very nice level as well. I like the use of the red and off-white robes, really makes them stand out.

Perplexti (Dwarves) - nice work, good to see a different colour chosen for the cloth.

Perplexti (Lizardmen) - nice simple muted scheme - I personally think these have a better finish to them than your Dwarves.

IamJack42 - Those Reavers are very nice indeed, kudos for not choosing the obvious High Elf spot colour of blue - the green makes them stand out nicely

Morglum - looking forward to seeing how these turn out.

Doi (Dark Elf) - nice work on the Sorceress, the skin has come out very nicely.

Doi (Ogres) - again, nice work. I like the differing trousers, really helps to break up the unit a little and make each model a bit individual.

Fabius Bile - I like the contrast between the purple skin and the greeny-blue metallics.

Arduhn - Again, I'm biased for anything Japanese, but he looks really good. Nice and simple, good quality finish to the white.

Jonahmaul - finally you get something done ;) Nice work though mate, I like the little patches of blue on the hide.

Page 4
Shandowner - I'm pretty sure I made it clear last month how awesome Spartan Elves are, but just to make it clear - AWESOME. The bases and movement trays are great as well, really finish them off nicely.

Thalenchar (Chaos) - Nice contrast between the white armour and black cloaks - the fire effect is nicely done.

Thalenchar (Skaven) - those Plague Monks look suitably rotten, well done. The unit filler is a nice touch.

Phew, all done. I'll comment individually on peoples stuff as it continues to get added :)

And in a flagrant display of double posting, some replies to those kind enough to comment my Druchii......

@ Perplexti - thanks fella, the aim was to get a bleak finish overall on the models, so its good to know its working to some extent.

@ DAGabriel - again, thanks :) My painting style is not for everyone I know - over the years it seems to have changed from the GW cabinet style (ably demonstrated by Gargobot in this very log) to the current bleaker, colder style on my elves. Plus I seem to have an addiction to painting bone at the moment....

As a small update, I'm planning to get my second unit of Spears done for the Tale this month, possibly with some Dark Riders if there's enough time.

Thanks for the comments folks. If anybody has some advice on Nurgle painting I'd be much appreciated as it's getting to the point where I want to launch my Ogre's at a wall! I've highlighted the champion up to rotting flesh now (knarloc > gretchin > rotting) but still don't feel it looks right. I'm going to try some washes but I just can't seem to get a nice 'Ogre's gone over to Nurgle' colour (seeing yesterday's GW blog with some awesome Nurgle stuff was very dispiriting!).

If anybody can offer advice I'd really appreciate it as I'm fast losing motivation due to frustration, it's a real shame because I'm REALLY happy and proud with how the rusted metal has come out!

Will comment on everybody else's stuff soon.

JackDaw
09-11-2011, 09:43
I'd have thought you'd be better off painting the flesh as the standard Ogre colour, then using the washes to move it over to Nurgle.

So maybe, Tallarn as a base, highlighted with Rotting, then hit it with Thraka and Leviathan washes, maybe a thin Devlan to pull it all together.

On the skin tone you've already got, you might need some Devlan or Ogryn washes to get the hint of the standard ruddy ogre flesh tone on top of the green.

Jonahmaul
09-11-2011, 09:45
That's kind of my thinking. I bought Army Green spray from Army Painter as though that would be a really good way to paint them but now I'm not so sure because I'm wondering like you suggest whether they should be skin coloured but with a rotten/greenish tinge to them. You think straight Rotting over Tallarn or a mix? Or maybe I should just go for a dark green look like plaguebearers?!!?

JackDaw
09-11-2011, 09:54
I reckon fleshy with rotten tints would look better mate. If I was gonna paint them, that's how I'd do them.

Basecoat of Tallarn
First highlight probably 50/50 Tallarn and Rotting
Second highlight 70/30 Rotting to Tallarn
Final highlight on the edges pure Rotting.

Then hit them with thin Thraka and Leviathan washes - the good thing is you don't need to be too uniform, a bit of variation would look better. I'd use several very thin washes of each as well, gives you a chance to build up the tint gradually.

The thin Devlan at the end is optional, just to pull the colours back if needed.

I know gree is supposed to be Nurgles go-to colour, but rotting flesh rarely goes that green. Personally i think something close to the skin tone on the Plaguebearers and GUO on the GW site would look much better.

Jonahmaul
09-11-2011, 10:08
Assume you mean the PG/GUO in yesterday's PLOG as opposed to the ones in the armies section which are quite green (the GUO especially!). I'm starting to think that the way I'm doing them is not the way to success although annoying as I've spent £8 on a can of spray that's redundant (until I can afford to do Orks anyway...). I'm going to try the washes over rotting flesh to see if that look ok but otherwise it might be back to the drawing board with this advice! Going to have to be very careful on the Ogre's I'm going at the moment though as they're going to have sooooo many layers of paint on the skin. I would have to go paint the champion first wouldn't I - grrrrrr! Cheers for the advice =)

Fairy Power Spray mate. Give them an all over spray, leave to soak for a couple of hours, or overnight, then scrub off with hot water. It'll take them down to the undercoat, if not to the plastic easy as pie, plus its only about £3 for a bottle.

Think that is going to be the plan as I've tried the rotting flesh with thraka green over and really don't like the look of it so it's back to the drawing board. Can probably get away with spraying straight over three of them as they've just had a wash and one highlight on the skin but the champion is going to need some power spray!

Sorry for hijacking the thread a bit everyone! Will look at getting my Ogre's posted ASAP once the repainting that has been the discussion of the last few posts has been done!

Army: The Stormbreaker Tribe [Ogre Kingdoms]

Units:
1.) Thunderbellies, 4 Leadbelchers lead into battle by "Loud" Argat, their Cannoneer
2.) Ol' Groundshaker, Ironblaster manned by Borag the Replaceable and pulled into battle by BŲff, the Rhinox

Build/Conversion: Straight out of the box. The Ironblaster is among the best models GW ever released, I wouldn't dare converting it!

Still to do: Nothing except one base. The Ironblaster was the model I spend the most time to paint, approx. 25 hours. Base will follow soon.

Highs &Lows :
I do not say this often, but I have to admit I'm a bit proud how the Ironblaster turned out. May very well be the best model I've ever painted. Very pleased with it.
The Leadbelchers were also great, as lovely as all Ogre minis are.

Points: 182 (4 Leadbelchers with Cannoneer) + 170 (Ironblaster) = 352. With the 291 from last month that makes 643!

Next month: Hmm...Mournfang Cavalry, I think, or maybe Golgfag. (as my BSB)

Dice roll: 3

Hey guys, I was just curious what you guys thought about this.
Should i heavily convert a plastic savage ork to be the BSB or use the avatars of war orc brute for the role? I'll have the brute anyway, but he is an awesome model already.
everything looks great! I've been painting here and there, but since I broke my toe yesterday, I should have a little more sit down time for the next couple of days

@ Perplexiti : thanks for the kind comment.

@ DAGabriel : I can't think of everybody when I choose my paint schemes ^^. Thank for commenting

@ dwarfhold: I have given up converting characters from basic troopers myself - there is just something about the poses that makes it too hard to make them stand out. So I'd use the AoW one (I'm painting him myself one of the next few months with just a minor conversion to give him a shield). Good luck!

Thanks for the comments everyone. The model is from the town people set at www.perry-miniatures.com
Sadly, there's no picture up for that set at the moment.

The base is definitely not finished on my wizard. I still haven't decided what to do with the bases. Any suggestions are welcome.

Ok, I'm going to do a lunch times worth of feedback for you guys.

Page 1
@Laborious- I like these 3 alot. I think you captured the coldness of winter very well with your colour choices and great basing.
@colonel kane trine-Those butchers look especially nice. Tbh I have found some of your photos quite difficult to see details. Blown away by how much you have done though!!!
@Zujara-I know not everyone is a fan of those trolls but I love them. Brings back memories those green rims.
@Thalenchar-Nice painting, really love the gnoblars skintones!
@EmperorNorton-Love both your entries this month! Those elf command figures are top notch.
@JackDaw-Loving those glowing eyes!
@DAGabriel-Nice job. I know I am supposed to be commenting on the minis but the terrain piece has stolen the show for me, how fun is rthe fishing skellies. Bravo!
@Tekore-Nice ranked up unit. I like the bases in particular the moss looks very good!
@daismith906 Quality paint job and nice blood effects. Not 100% sold by the snow effect though, sorry.

@Confessor_Atol-I really like the new ogre models and you are doing a very good jobs on yours.
@azhagmorglum-This is how black orcs should look. Love 'em. The sguigs are herders are lovely also!
@Rikk- The forest gobo looks very good on a base. I take it he is from the big spider kit?

Ok, so comments for everyone first:

Page 1
Laborious – Wonderful work on basing the Yhetees especially - I’ve recently come into the old (old old!) Golfag’s Ogre kit and need to bulk them up so they can actually be used as ogres. Might try that basing technique. Oh, and the way you’ve highlighted their skin is wonderful . Good work!

CKT – Really nice work with the bloodstains and tattoos, especially. Filthy and fierce, just like ogres should be!

Zujara – The detail work you’ve snuck in there is excellent! Love the skin tone on the trolls and the dwarf head.

Thalenchar – I am a huge fan of those gnoblars. They just pop! Not sure how I feel about it on the actual head of the ogre, but I imagine it looks better in person.

Rootsmanuva – Love the way you’re doing the ethereal stuff. Brings me back…

EmperorNorton (Ogre) - Oh, heck. I have to buy this stupid model, it just looks too good. Your work with the flames is most impressive! I like it much more than GW’s.
EmperorNorton (Dark Elves) – That is some really good conversion work. I am seriously hopelessly outclassed by you folks. Love the blood trail!

Jack Daw – I am currently trying to replicate your work with regards to combining flat and metal paints. Hope you don’t mind. Favorite part of the Tale (by a hair, everyone, I assure you!) – love seeing it come along.

DAGabriel – Wonderful work on the blue especially!

CKT (Ogres) – From what I can see I’m really digging those gut-plates. Nice to see them stand out.

CKT (Tomb Kings) – Very different Tomb guard, like ‘em!

Tekore – I actually like the brown-over-green on these guys, think the pastel blue compliments it nicely. But what do I know. :P

Daismith906 – Love the conversion work on the guy with the eyepatch, shouting at his foes to “stand and fight!” Really nice work on the blue, too.

AndrewDrexler – I really like your color choices, though I wonder if the cloaks might not benefit from being slightly darker or lighter. Or something.

Confessor_Atol – Their pants! What a perfect choice, stands out nicely from the fur of the bearpigcats.

AzhagMorglum – Those three squig models are my favorite models ever. And you’ve done them a great service in your skill at painting them!

Rikk – I like the conversion work, the snake especially – good work on the standard bearer’s cloak as well.

Zark the Damned – Birdmen of HECK YES! Love what you’re doing here, this is an army I’d like to see across the field someday. I do have a mess of them sitting around, actually, might have to get started on ‘em…

Page 2

Frejdruk – Excellent choice on the grey skin and green pants. Love it.

Gargobot – Oh, beans. I’d been wondering how to paint my 30 horrors for the Tale and now you come up with this loveliness. How’d you get the skin to do that?

Rutgar – I always liked scorched brown for my base edging, but that’s just me. Like the fluff behind them all being green. Looking sharp so far!

Braad – Little too graphic for me! See what I did there? See? …I’ll get my coat, then.

Kharn_21 – I really like your use of metals across the unit, and with the sorcerer’s staff especially.

Dagreenmoonboyz – WOW, these are gorgeous! I’m sort of at a loss to say anything at all. Like how you make the character models look so different from each other.

Great Horned Owl – the fire effect is superlative. I’m liable to try it out on my own fire mage, if you don’t mind?

Gogs78 – Well you certainly have the high elves sewn up! I love the eagles, and the banner work especially.

Avian – Avian, your work! It’s heavenly! Just gets my green blood going. Love that doom diver especially, the gobbo with the bellows is priceless.

Page 3
Kaos – Looks like a great start! Thanks for giving me a bit of inspiration to paint up my dwarves as well. I hate that I have so many projects being done around the stuff I’ve promised for the Tale…but you guys keep me learning new stuff and it seems a shame not to try it out!

Juicytomatoes – Yes, they look brilliant lined up mate! Though I fear their combat potential may come up a little…short. Where are the models from, anyway?

JohnnyG – Oh, but the Rat Ogre is splendid! Very nice indeed. I have two to finish, might do that tonight having seen this!

Sharpy195 – My favorite is by far the WLC. That seems like a lovely kit – I’ve got one moldering somewhere.

Perplexti (Dwarves) – ALL BLACKS WOOOOOOO – ahem. Your painting is wonderful. Keep up the good work.

Perplexti (Lizardmen) – Oh, I like the grey here. ALLLLLL BLAAAACKSSS
IamJack42 – Holy crap these models are gorgeous. How do I not own any? SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY

Morglum – So I was looking up “Ramshackle” in the dictionary today and these showed up! Perfect mate!

Doi (Dark Elf) – Oh, the work you’ve done on her face is superlative. I can never get eyes to do that. Like how clean the skin-work is too. How DOES her shirt stay on?

Doi (Ogres) – I am very happy with the conversion as well – inspired!

Fabius Bile – Good grief, the skin tone is amazing! How’d you do that? Love how cohesive everything looks.

Arduhn – Love what you’ve done here – good on you for working with the PMs, wonderful kit.

Jonahmaul – Know how you feel about elves, hard to keep on them sometimes. Still, the work you’ve done here is wonderful, hope you keep at it!

Page 4
Shandowner – These continue to look awesome. Inspiring work mate. Love the swordmasters especially.

Thalenchar (Chaos) – Really, really like the cloaks. Bet that takes forever, huh? 

Thalenchar (Skaven) – Love the blue! What a novel idea with plague monks. I went with green because I’m a rank amateur.

Morkash Gorhowl – Where’d they dig that cannon up? Love it mate – filthy and grungy and excellent.

Whew, there we go. Thanks for the comments folks – the stuff looks better in person but gets washed out by the camera, can’t figure out how to change that yet. I wanted to keep the green on the elves a bit duller than usual just because that’s sort of how I figure their clothes would get “dirty” – we have to put ours through the wash, theirs just looks more natural. Stupid elves! And sorry about Skulltaker being so bright. Y’all are going to hate the bloodletters :P

More stuff to comment - wooo.

Bear with me gents, it's been a long long week in work and this is the brief shining outlet of fun in an otherwise grey-smeared day of ennui.

@ Morkash Gorehowl - you should be rightly proud of that Ironblaster mate, it's looking very very good. It's an absolute beast of a kit as well, I don't reckon I could be bothered to paint it personally so kudos to you.

@ DAGabriel - blimey-o-riley that is a bright bright Necro-thingy. You know what though, it's nice to see something different to the standard statue look. The wings themselves have a nice contrast between the blue, yellow and gold.

And replies to peoples comments on my stuff:

@ Rootsmanuva - cheers mate - I don't go in for that whole OSL thing, so it's good to know I got an eerie glowing efect just through my standard style

@ Doomscape - you sir, have made my day. I'm honoured that you're taking a few things from my style, I really am - if you have any questions or want to know a particular recipe, just ask mate, I am more than happy to share the tricks.

WiP wise for me, it's all about spears at the moment. A unit of 29 to do this month, 7 are finished, 7 are taken up in the unit filler and handler:

http://i894.photobucket.com/albums/ac145/Jackdaw1982/filler.jpg

And the command and another 5 have been assembled:

http://i894.photobucket.com/albums/ac145/Jackdaw1982/spearcmd.jpg
http://i894.photobucket.com/albums/ac145/Jackdaw1982/spearcmd3.jpg
http://i894.photobucket.com/albums/ac145/Jackdaw1982/spearcmd2.jpg

Paint wise, the armour on the command, handler and 5 spears should get finished tonight, so game on for getting the whole unit done this month.

Cheers everyone

To make up for my neglect last month, I will comment on everyone this month.

Page 1

@Laborious Nice Yhetees, man. I think the ice blades turned out very well, and I love the snow bases.

@colonel kane trine Youíre a machine. I like the black/silver scheme, and the Iím a fan of the BSBís banner. The tomb guard are particularly impressive as well. I think they really look like a terrifying and ancient evil.

@Zujara I am very impressed with the bone and the stone, particularly the dwarf statue. Mind listing the bone recipe?

@Thalenchar I love the fluff, and the gnoblars. Nice job on the pale blue skin.

@Roostmanuva The ethereal green is great. Really gives a great ghostly vibe.

@EmperorNorton Very nice Firebelly and Dark Elves. Your colors are really deep and vibrant, and impressively smooth. I particularly like the green scales.

@JackDaw I think the light color scheme is very effective. Really evil looking.

@DAGabriel The blue on the skeletons is great, and the fishing skeleton is hilarious. I guess if you teach a man to fish he wonít go hungry for the rest of his afterlife.

@Tekore I think the brown wash over the green is working. I think the light green really gives a nice mood to the models, kind of makes me think of them as spritely and fantastical.

@daismith906 Love the blue skin. I think the contrast with the armor is really eye-catching.

@andrewdrexler I think you really pulled off that autumnal look. Nicely done.

@Confessor_Atol Liking the verdigris effect. What color did you use for the mournfangís heads? I like the contrast with the fur.

@azhagmorglum I think the red/green look works well. I always fear that Christmasy look, so canít bring myself to try it, but I think youíve pulled it off quite well. The squigsand night goblins are great. I think theyíre really fun models, and youíve done them justice.

@Rikk As you noted, the pictures are a little on the dark side, but from what I can see the highlighting, particularly on the goblinís feathers, really is well done. I think the snake turned out well, too.

@Zark the Damned Wow, thatís an impressive amount of work. I like the bisected color scheme, the yellow and black work well together. Kudos on getting a decent shade of yellow.

Page 2

@doomscape I love the blue flames on Skulltaker, and I congratulate you on the smooth creamy spear shafts. I struggle with those, personally, and youíve done well.

@Frejdruk The browns on the Mournfangs are great, and I like the bone color youíve done on the models. I think the basing works well, too.

@Gargobot The old horrors are great models, and the flesh colors you have used really helps make them even more disturbing and, ummmm, horrifying.

@Rutgar Nice lizardmen. Any chance we can get a closer look at the bases? They look nice.

@Kharn_21 I like the flails, they really pop with such great, smooth color. Decided on that icon yet?

@dagreenmoonboyz I love the blood effect on the Night Goblin Bossí axe. The dead boar on the arachnarok base is a nice touch, too.

@Great horned owl The mage looks great, I love the fire. I think the lines on the collar are nice, I wouldnít sweat it.

@gogs78 The high elves look great. The basing is well done and I think they all look quite realistic.

@Avian I think the wolf chariot came out well, and I really donít think the yoke sitting higher is a big deal. The doom diver is hilarious.

Page 3

@Kaos I love your painting. So neat and professional.

@juicytomatoes The Halflings are well done. I love the variety of colors, but they still are a unified squad. The hats help, I think.

@Johnny G Nice skaven. The wood is looking very realistic.

@Sharpy195 Wow, thatís a lot of rats! The basing may have been mind-numbing, but it looks impressive.

@perplexiti Thanks for the kind words! I love the dwarfs, particularly the beards. The skinks look great too, the grey scheme is a new one to me, but I like it.

@Morglum Necksnapper Those pumpwagons look awesome! I canít wait to see them finished.

@Doi lovely skin on that sorceress. But I think Iím most impressed with the purple. Iím having a little more trouble making out the Ogre pics, but the hammer on the Ogre with the white and blue striped pants looks amazing.

@Fabius Bile What a striking job on that Firebelly. The contrast is great, and the fire just pops like crazy. The verdigris is nice as well.

@Arduhn That is a gorgeous white. I envy it, and am inspired to work harder when painting my elves.

@Jonahmaul Motivation or not, I think the Hydra came out quite well. The paintjob really shows the modelís detail.

Page 4

@Shandowner I think the bases have really turned out nicely. Very nice, vibrant reds on the cloaks, too.

@Thalenchar The flames on the WoC cloaks are great. I also like the use of purple flames instead of the traditional green on the Skaven.

Page 5

@Morkash Gorehowl Nice Ogres. Are those 3 cannonballs down the barrel of the ironblaster? The fur on the Rhinox was well done, I find it take great patience and a steady brush to highlight a single model so carefully. For doing that I commend you.

My comments for month 2 (dice roll 3) :

@ EmperorNorton : great firebelly, the skin and flames are top notch. I like the leaf-covered base too (are these leaves?).
Sorry to hear about the finecrap problems. Really puts me off buying anything resin from GW...

YOur three dark elves are nothing to blush about also. They are very characterful, and the painting really do them justice. The blood effect on the axe is well done also.

@ Tekore : Your glade guard are nice. I think it's the bases that tie them up alltogether in a nice theme and visual effect. One critic though, I think the capes would do with some highlights, even slight ones ( edit : I just saw your "LOWS" comment, and you seem to be aware of that small problem)

Great work overall

@ Daismith906 : you didn't roll, but I'd like to say that the blue skin on your ogres is superbly done. The maneaters conversions are nice also. Keep up the great work

@ Rikk : I'm happy to comment on other greenskins painters.YOur goblin shaman is ace, very dynamic and characterful, plus good painting. The base could have have been more ornated though (for a character I mean), but nothing dramatic.

I could say the same for the savage orc shaman. Besides, the addition of the snake is cool, and very well done. Nice detail !

@ Sharpy195 : That's a great skaven horde and a lot of painting for one month !! I like your white-ish color scheme. The wood looks good judging from your picture. What's the plan for next month?

@ Perplexiti : Nice crew for your cannon. The latter lack some depth I think, maybe some wash and highlighting. I hope to see your bases done too at the end of the tale (at worst ^^)

Your chameleon skinks are well converted. Very convincing. Same comment for the bases, I'm hoping for nice jungle themed bases. Do you have plan for them?

@ Morkash Gorebowl : great unit of leadbelchers, and very nice bases. That's the kind of details that I like to see taken care of. The ironblaster is good too, your painting makes it look feral, which is a good thing considering the army:p

Ok, kids are all asleep and frozen planet has been watched!

Now for Page 2 comments.

@doomscape- Love the army shot of your elves. That green really pops!
@Frejdruk - Nice job mate on some lovely models. I like the grey skin also.
@Gargobot- Really glad you have chose the older sculpts, I prefer them so much when compared to the new ones. Such smooth painting as always!
@Rutgar - Great start on the lizards will look really sweet when there are 20 all ranked up. Keep it up.
@Kharn_21 - You have made a really decent start and have got alot done. Are you going to paint the movement tray with finish it off I think. Nice choice of sorcerer btw
@dagreenmoonboyz - They all look so good! So many points in a month:)
@Great horned owl - Love this mage. Real character, nice flames.
@gogs78- One of my most favorite armies in the tale. They look amazing all together.
@Avian- Pump wagons with sails it doesn't get much better.

More comments tomorrow.

Okay, time for comments!

For dice roll: 4

Laborious: I never liked those models, but the colors you chose and the paintjob makes them look outstanding!
Rutgar: Very effective neat paintjob there. Good work!
Doi: That's a cracker of a paintjob on the DE sorceress! Those eyes... those eyes...!
Fabius Bile: A novel take on the firebelly, for sure. Love your army paint scheme.
Jonahmaul: That's a fearsome looking hydra there! I did not know they switched that model to finecast. A good move indeed!
Thalenchar: Fantastic work on the cloaks! Now wouldn't an entire unit of that be a sight to see. (Oh yeah, and 3 models for 103 points? Man, I had to paint 20! :D)

Some others that caught my eye:
JackDaw: Man, I love your DE color scheme!
DAGabriel: Fellow tomb king, so how can I miss? Fantastic neat work on the unit. The terrain piece is a winner!
colonel kane trine: You are like the paint train... Nice work over many many models. An inspiration you are!
gogs78: I love the effort you make into doing your bases. They look awesome! The paintwork is also great.
Avian: So much creativity just pouring out of your ears eh? ;) Very nice! Love the pirate snotling wagon especially.
Arduhn: Ah... a fellow Nipponese collector :) That's some nice painting there.

Replies:
perplexiti: Thanks!
DAGabriel: Y'know it's strange. I haven't felt the frustration yet. Just having to rush through them because of a heavy work month this month.
JackDaw: Aw, thanks man.
doomscape: Ahhh... the puns! There seems to be plenty of them going round for these guys :D Keep 'em comin... The models are from Riceball Miniatures (http://www.riceballminiatures.com).
iamjack42: Thank you. Yes, their hats do help, and they should keep their hats on :p

Actually, there're a lot of good work going on here and I wish I had time to comment on them all, but this month and the last has been really tight on time for me. Keep it up guys!

Oh I forgot, I'm in the midst of my tomb kings entry for the next 2 months. It's a sphinx worth about 220 points, so I'm spreading it over 2 months. Does this count as a joker? I don't have pics at the moment though, hope it's okay.

Sorry guys, my connection is being stupendously bad this week! It's a struggle for it to load a single picture let alone a thread of them so I've gone through the 4's individually. The rest of your work looked great the other day though, so keep up the good work!

Thalenchar (Got it right this month!) - Really like the colour scheme, the chaos iconography on the shields looks particularly good. Only criticism would be that the leatherwork and the fur look to be painted the same, which looks odd to my eyes. Just lighten/darken it up with a few passes with a dry brush to create some contrast between the two and job done! :)

Rutgers - Not the best pictures, which is a shame as the bases look really interesting. Your work or bought? Besides that, the scales looks well done and the bronze is nice and vibrant.

Juicy tomatoes - canít say any more than I did last month really. I really, really, really LOVE these guys. The colours are wonderful. Iíll probably be dead before you finish an entire army of them, but thatís ok.

Doi - Nice sorceress. Skin looks good, and the face excellent (if her expression is a little bit confused :)). Only negative is the model itself is a little bland in terms of details, Iíd have been inclined to paint there hair a different colour to the boots myself, just to add another point of interest.

Fabius Bile - Interesting looking ogres. The skin is very striking and I love the mourn fangs. The verdigris on the armour looks great, if a little over used on the mournfangs. Combined with their flesh it looks a little bit psychedelic. Your weathered iron looks great, and Iíd personally prefer to see a couple of the gut plates painted in that method to break it up a bit. :)

Jonahmaul - Cracking looking hydra! Skin, bones, teeth gums. All looks good.

------------

@ perplexity - @Laborious: Great looking Yhetees man, shame about the finecast issues though.

Meh, my own fault for not checking them thoroughly enough I guess. Think in future once Iíve cleaned any finecast stuff and undercoated them Iíll give them a light dry brush in a contrasting colour just to highlight any flaws as as soon as I started painting areas they became blindingly obvious. Donít think it helped that yhetees are all fur, I expect on more normal models these things will show up much more obviously at the start.

@Dagabriel - @ laborious: I love those yhetees, very nice fur. A tiny bit as criticism, would like to see a harder contrast on the weapons, perhaps a final highlight in pure white?

Yeah, itís there but the cameras blended it in a bit. Looking at them in my cabinet though I think youíre right anyway, remind me when Iíve finished the army to go back over them again. ;)

J@ackdaw - Laborious - nice looking Yhetees - I'm still not sold on the models themselves but you've done a really good job of making them look good. The bases finish them off nicely.

Yeah, they are a bit hideous, arenít they? Itís the heads (and MASSIVE manes) that I really donĎt like. I quite like the middle ones face, the left hand one is OK but the right hand one is just crap to be honest.

@Roostmanuva - @Laborious - I like these 3 alot. I think you captured the coldness of winter very well with your colour choices and great basing.

Thanks. Iím very pleased with that aspect of them. Really looking forward to trying to achieve the same feel with the other creatures in the army.

@doomscape - Laborious Ė Wonderful work on basing the Yhetees especially - Iíve recently come into the old (old old!) Golfagís Ogre kit and need to bulk them up so they can actually be used as ogres. Might try that basing technique. Oh, and the way youíve highlighted their skin is wonderful . Good work!

Thanks! Iíve got the third generation of golfags merry band myself, the first unit I actually painted in more than block colours iirc. I was going to repaint them and use them as maneaters for this army, but even they look half starved compared to the current ogres. I may still do it though as they are fantastic sculpts.

@Iamjack - @Laborious Nice Yhetees, man. I think the ice blades turned out very well, and I love the snow bases.

Cheers.

@juicy tomatoes - Laborious: I never liked those models, but the colors you chose and the paintjob makes them look outstanding!

Well, thatís a very great compliment indeed. Thank you very much.

Just wanted to quickly say, I finished my Oct. entry in Oct. I just haven't been able to take any pictures yet because I currently don't have access to the proper camera. I'll be posting pics as soon as I can take them (should be in the next couple of days).

Internet has finally deigned to work long enough to allow me to upload some pictures.

6 very WIP bulls. Hopefully if I finish them soon I may be able to sneak in another character for the month.

Hi my comments on page 1, as I forgot to throw a dice and want some time to paint this weekend also.

Laborious
very 'cool' looking Yethees!

colonel kane trine
I like the scorched skin on the leadbelchers and the overall coherence in the look of the army. No nonsence apporoach, chipped of armour, very relistic skin tone. Great tabletop quality. And easy to take it to a next level by for instance greenstuffing the joint in the barrel of that leadbelcher (second from the left in the backrow ogre)
Also the tomkingsunit with red shields looks splendid.

Zujara
The brown wash/dip turned out great on the stoneparts.

Thalenchar
Nice background story, looking forward seeing and reading more about your other units.

Roostmanuva
The wraiths are just right. They have nice contrast, dark armour and light etheralparts, also the bases with the leaves are outstanding.

EmperorNorton
Great work on the flame, good job all around. I'm scared of the dark elf heroes.

JackDaw
I especially like the skull on top of the staff of the sorcerer. Original color choice.
The repeater crossbow elves are amazing ranked up with wonderfull bases and a striking combination of black and toned down red. Very subtle highlighting on the black boots and robes are delicious.

DAGabriel
I love the way you painted your skeletons, it looks like they really stand in the sun!
Wich of course is desirable when painting Tomb Kings.

Tekore
Such nice green color for the robes of the wood elves. Good choice. One of my favorite wood elf units I've ever seen.

daismith906
Very nice blending, good technique. The blue skincolor is not really my thing though. The metal looks superb.

andrewdrexler
Love the bases, so realistic. Great painting on the woodies aswell.

Confessor_Atol
Impressive work! Looking forward seeing them finished.

azhagmorglum
Good looking classic colorchoice on the black orc boyz armour. Cool how that colorfull armour is chipped and dented. Great highlighting on the nightgoblin robes.

Rikk
That snake is so great! Wonderful idea and you painted it so realistic, I just see him move!

Zark the Damned
What a wonderfull sight, your unit of birdmen. The army has a striking colorchoice, very well done.

@Kharn_21: Nice marauders, maybe the armour could do with a highlight or something on the grey?

@ Kharn_21: The overall effect is ok, the single warriors are missing contrast and depth, especially the helmets.

thanks for the feedback, i had washed the all the marauders with gryphonne sepia and i had hoped that it would help the grey not look so flat, right now im working with a fairly limited palate because im at school and havent had time to find/go to a LGS. im open to ideas for the highlight, i tried a bit of spacewolves grey for one, the look didnt quite work for me.

Kharn_21 - Sorceror looks good and the marauders are nice.

Kharn_21 Ė I really like your use of metals across the unit, and with the sorcererís staff especially.

thanks! its just chainmail with a sepia wash :D after the tale of painters i'm tempted to do more work on the staff b/c i had wanted the top top get darker and a little more fleshy and alive looking.

@Kharn_21 I like the flails, they really pop with such great, smooth color. Decided on that icon yet?

thank you! if you saw my BSB from last month ill probably end up painting the banner like that, i have no idea on the actual icon though, ideas? i'm trying to keep the entire list relatively god neutral so i can play with whichever mark i feel like at the time

@Kharn_21 - You have made a really decent start and have got alot done. Are you going to paint the movement tray with finish it off I think. Nice choice of sorcerer btw

thanks! im not sure what im gonna do with the movement trays (about 1/2 my army has trays like that) and none of them are quite the right size for how i run my units. for these marauders, i usually run them 2 blocks of 30-36, i add some from my older marauder models (which i may end up repainting b/c one box worth looks like crap).

also, im not sure if anyone noticed, but there is one guy in the unit who lost his flail.. not sure why the failure is getting an upgrade, but he is gonna get an old bloodletter axe and become the unit champion.

this month has been way to crazy for me, not sure ill be able to get my knights done well by the end of the month :/

@colonel kane trine-Thanks for the comment to answer your question, yes I have washed and highlighted the metal before blood my photos are really not very good. I have done more(weathering etc)to this knight and made him some friends.

I have also started some mantic skellies. these guys are going to get 10 minutes painting time each. I can't take to the sculpts at all :(

My comment on other people's work (dice roll not 3) :

@ Laborious : excellent yhetees, you almost make me love those ugly minis ^^ The fur is well executed, and the choice of color is intelligent, better than GW's one IMO. Keep it up !

@ colonel kane trine : your ogre butchers are great. Same as Laborious, you almost make me like thse ugly minis. You are a master at discouraging people with all those minis you paint in one month

@ Zujara : nice trolls, though th bases are too classic for my taste. But at least your minis are based, something you ca't say about most of people's models. Keep the good work up !

@ Jackdaw : house of chains rocks ! The herald is wonderfully executed and the fluff is pleasantly enigmatic. The bone armour is nice as well, better than the boring metal one. Can't wait to see more

@ DaGabriel : efficient skeletons unit. Nice and clean. It promises a lot for the rest of your army.

@ Andrewdrexler : the base is what makes your unit stand out ! And the painting of the models is perfect also. I like that attention to details that you give to your minis.

@ confessor_atol : impressive mornfangs, superb base and nice and characterful painting overall.

@ zark the damned : woah, those birdmen of catrazza are a rare sight around here. It's agreeable to see different minis sometimes. And the painting is great.
The indian centaur is a cool conversion also.

@ Doomscape : skullltaker is nice, I like the use of contrastig colors on it.The elves are great too, and they are shaping up rather quickly. Keep it up !

@ frejdruk : I really like your mournfangs. The deep shading suits the models very well. I like also your choice of painting scheme. I can't wait to see your future work

@ gargobot : nice little unit of horrors, with a puzzling choice of color. I don't like it very much, though I can say that they are well painted nonetheless. The sorcerer is great by the way. Keep it up!

@ rutgar : cool to the a lizardmen painter around here. They are not numerous I tend to think. I hope you'll manage to follow the tale, I surely want to see more of your work.

@ kharn_21 : nice unit of marauders, though they seem to lack some washes. Any plan for that in the future?

@ dagreenmoonboyz : nice bunch of greenskins, and superb painting

Enough for this post, I'll comment on the rest later. Keep it up everybody !!

Wow, I really wish it hadn't taken me so long to get these pictures, but I've got them now.

ARMY : Warriors of Chaos (3x Men's)

UNITS: 2 Chaos Knights, 8 Chaos Warriors of, 3 Chaos Chosen, Valkia the Bloody

CONVERSION: Valkia is a scratchbuild, based on a Chaos Knight torso and arms, dark pegasus wings, a bretonian knight head with extra hair and horns, and old metal bloodletter legs filed down with sculpted armor. Each of the chosen has also been modified in some way so that they wield halberds and shields.

STILL TO DO: The Warriors and Chosen each need more models for their units (although they themselves are additions to already existing units).

HIGHS & LOWS:
Highs - Finally painting the Valkia which I've had primed for almost 2 years.
Lows - Losing access to my camera for a few weeks.

POINTS: 734

DICE ROLL : 4

Images:

Valkia:

And the full group shot of everything from the tale thus far:

And finally, as it's already so late into November I also have a w.i.p. that I can share:

Cheers to everyone and I hope to comment on all the fours sometime over the next week.

My comments for this month. Iíll just do my own rolls since I have yet to start painting for this month and I need all the time I have to reach my target! I had a tournament this Saturday and spent all of last week getting my ogres ready enough to be used. Time well spent apparently, since I got 18 out of 20 pts for painting. Anyway, comment time:

2s
@Zujara: Ah, yes, Trolls! Arguably my favourite Warhammer unit. I like yours a lot. Nice skin tone. Well done.
@JackDaw: Youíve every right to be proud of this model, mate. Came out wonderfully. Great conversion and excellent paint job.
@Confessor_Atol: I like the skin tone on your Ogres, looks good. Mournfangs came out well too. Four of these will certainly look imposing! Small point though: are you planning on adding any grass or snow or somesuch to the bases? While I like the way they look, being so large they might benefit from something to break up the grey a bit.
@Kharn21: Well done for not having that many different paints to choose from. Iím sure the unit will look fine on the table  What will you do with the bases?

4s
@Laborious: Proof that the yhetees are actually quite decent models when painted properly. Love the ice effect on the weapons, and good job on the bases as well. Good job!
@Rutgar: Congrats on finally starting your lizzies! Love the bases, very fitting. The green and gold complements each other very well.
@JuicyTomatoes: Awesome models and a very striking paint job. Great use of different bright colours while still keeping the unit as a whole looking cohesive. Well done.
@Doi (Dark Elves): Very nice Sorceress. The loverly purple fits well with the skin tone you used. Looks great! Also, love your snowy bases.
@ Fabius Bile: Purple, blue, green, orange, red, and yellow, and yet this Firebelly doesnít look all over the place! Great model only made better by your paint job. Good stuff. Also, love the red noses on your Mournfangs. Feels very Christmassy to me (although I doubt thatís what you were going for ;) )
@Jonahmaul: For a model you werenít really into painting you did a good job. Just keep it up, paint whatever you have to to reach your monthly quote and Iím sure youíll get your motivation back. Iím experiencing the same difficulties with my Warriors of Chaos.

Comments on comments:

@Perplexiti: Thanks for the kind comments. Re the eyes on my warriors: they are an attempt at glowing eyes, but, like you, Iím not too keen on how they came out. I was just glad to get these finished in time. Still, plenty of Warriors left to do for this tale, so Iím sure theyíll get better.
@DAGabriel: Thank you. Iíll try a model with deeper shading and see how it looks. Maybe thatíll be the thing thatíll get my motivated to paint more of these ;)
@JackDaw: Thanks! I was afraid the blue gnoblars would turn out too smurfy, but I think they came out fine. Of course, they canít please everyone ;)
@Roostmanuva: Thanks, I like how they came out too.
@Doomscape: Thank you. Re: Ogres: Well, if thereís one thing thatís worse than my GS skills, itís my picture-taking skills, so probably itís a bit of both! Re: Chaos Warriors: Actually, the cloaks hardly take time to do at all. With the way I do the flames I do not have to be neat at all, and we all know painting inside the lines is what takes the most time, right?
@iamjack42: Thanks a lot!
@Juicytomatoes: Bear with me and there will be a full unit! Also, it was actually 3.5 models for 103 pts, just so weíre clearÖ
@Laborious: Points for remembering! And thanks for the tip, will remember to give it a try.
@MorglumNecksnapper: Thanks! Most units will have their own fluff. Some will be bog standard DoW though!
@ColonelKT: Thanks a lot!

Gentlemen!

I apologize for my absence over the last couple of weeks. My family just moved back north from Georgia, which threw things off for a little bit. Now we're hopping around from place to place visiting various family members, which hasn't left a whole lot of time to paint.

In summation, this month will be a joker from me- though not without some progress! I've spent the last couple of weeks building, converting, and basing models so I'll be ready to rock and roll come December.

doomscape
14-11-2011, 12:03
So, if hypothetically one were really, really close to hitting their target on their army, could they start another one after that? I have 10,000 points of orcs that really need to get taken care of, and high elves are driving me insane. But are also nearly done. Figure both the elves and the demons I'm doing will definitely be done by December, so not sure if I can move on to another army or what.

Sorry these have taken me a while but here are some comments:

PAGE ONE

Laborious - I don't like the Yhetee models, I think that they, along with the Gorgor, let the OK army down a great deal...... yet somehow I like these?! Maybe it's the colour scheme, or the bases, or both, but these look awesome! How did you do the fur as I think it's looks great

CKT (Ogres) - nice set of characters, looking forward to seeing them lined up with some mates! Oh no, I've just got to them! Seriously impressive amount of things you manage to get painted, I d't know where you find the time!

Zujara - very cool Trolls, you are right to be proud of that stone as it looks great

Thalenchar - love the idea for the cannon and the painting's great too!

Roostmanuva - very well painted stuff, really like those wights especially

EmperorNorton - glad your happy as it looks great, really like the effect you've got in the flame/smoke. Good work on the DE's too, I share your lack of Dark Elf inspired motivation!

Jackdaw - excellent work as usual (git!). The Emissary is awesome, I love the weather armour, how did you do it?

DAGabriel - might not be fun but they look great. Looking forward to seeing more

CKT (TK) - as with the Ogre's good looking stuff and a seriously impressive amount of it!

Tekore - great stuff but the movement tray would benefit from some 'proper' basing, it's too bright!

daismith906 - great Ogre's, really like the blue skin and the blood looks really good

andrewdrexler - really nice looking elves, what are you using for the leaves on the bases?

confessor_atol - great looking mournfangs

azhagmorglum - awesome stuff, really like the chipping on the armour

Rikk - nice shamans, really like the gobbo conversion

zark - great looking stuff again, thanks for the close up of the cursed company

PAGE TWO

Doomscape – nice looking stuff again, like the green on the HE’s, unusual to see them done that way but I think it works

Frejdruk – great looking mournfangs, hope you manage to get some motivation because the army is really good and I look forward to seeing it expand

Gargobot – great horrors, nice to see them in a more normal looking skin tones, makes them look very freaky!

Rutgar – great fluff, really made me laugh and some good lizzies too, looking forward to seeing how the greenness develops!

Kharn_21 – nice amount of stuff done and looking really good too.

Dagreenmoonboyz – great stuff, really glad you persisted with the spider as it looks ace
Great horned owl – great conversion and well painted too

Gogs78 – lots of great stuff, really like the purple on the elves

Avian – great conversions all around but I particularly like that pump wagon (although it’s more wind wagon now!), it looks brilliant.

PAGE THREE

Juicytomatoes – great looking stuff again, painted a night goblin army for one of the first tales so feel your pain with the low points cost!

johnnyG – all you’ve done is a single, awesome, rat ogre! Really great work, looking forward to seeing the screaming bell

sharpy195 – that’s a staggering amount of painting for one month and it’s painted to a high standard as well, really great work

perplexti – excellent stuff for the dwarves and good work on the conversions. I struggle with GS too so it’s a brave attempt and I think you’ve pulled it off. I like the colour scheme too. Well done on the world cup (I have a sense of dťjŗ vu.....!)

Iamjack42 – great looking reavers

Morglum necksnapper – great conversions, looking forward to seeing them 100% finished

Doi – great stuff once again, looking forward to seeing light box inspired pictures to appreciate them more! That weapon is just about the only thing I like about the current maneaters so great to see it used!

Fabius bile – great looking stuff, really love the Ogre riders in particular and the red on the end of the mournfangs snouts really works well

Arduhn – nice little miniature and well painted

PAGE FOUR

Shandowner – great theme for the army, well painted and those bases really tie them together impressively as well, good work!

Thalenchar – the warriors look ace, white is a very hard colour to paint so you should be proud. The plague monks are also looking very nice

Darnok – might be a joker but those are great! More killy death on their feet – why haven’t ogre’s thought of that before....

PAGE FIVE

Morkash – excellent looking stuff. That Ironblaster does look really good, the cannon especially

PAGE SIX

Kaltheras – great work, I love that deamon prince especially, awesome conversion work and great painting too. Can you tell me how you did the skin on the Nurgle champion please?

Phew, ok, got all the comments done. Might need to start just doing the same dice roll as so many more people over here than TO40KP. I hope to get my Ogre’s finished soon but it might need to be counted as a joker and then a buy back next month to put me back on track. I have sprayed one black and I am going to try the skin recipe JackDaw gave me to see if I’m happy with that (along with some advice that will hopefully be coming from Kaltheras!). Once I’ve found a way to paint the skin that I’m happy with I’m positive I can get back on track, I’m just very unmotivated at the moment because of the frustration of not being able to!

Afternoon everyone - good to see people are still getting loads done. Oh and thanks for all the kind comments so far folks - strap yourselves in while I reply to everyone :)

@ IamJack42 - cheers fella. The colour choice was a deliberate thing, a step away from the standard DE colour choice. Plus I seem to have a thing for painting bone recently....

@ Juicytomatoes - thanks for commenting when you didnt have to mate. Glad to hear the colour scheme is going down well.

@ Morglum Necksnapper - I was very happy with how the xbows turned out so thanks :) The warriors really do look better as xbows than spearmen.

@ CKT - cheers fella. Everyone mentions the bases as well the Emissary - I feel a little guilty as the bases are actually really really simple to do.

@ Azhagmorglum - again, thanks fella. Nice to know my choice of bone as the main armour colour has paid off nicely! There's plenty more fluff to come as well, my plog is already bulging at the seams with it.

@ Thalenchar - cheers mate. I just new as soon as I did the rough assembly in my head that the Emissary would work out well. He's easily one of the ebst things I've painted recently.

@ Jonahmaul - ah it's almost as though I made a living painting mini's for years isn't it? ;)

The weathered metallic sections (I assume that's the bit you mean) were done as follows:

50/50 mix of Tin Bitz & Scorched Brown
Stipple over the top with Tin Bitz
Stipple over that with 50/50 Tin Bitz & Brazen Brass
Stipple over that with Brazen Brass
Stipple over that with 50/50 Brazen Brass & Mithril
Stipple over that with Mithril
Glaze with watered down Hawk Turquoise
Wash with watered down Thraka Green
Wash with watered down Badab Black

For the staff sections, it was just Boltgun-Chainmail-Mithril then the glazes and washes as above. It seems like a lot of work written down, but I was only painting small sections and only stippling a lot of the colours so it's actually a lot quicker than it seems.

And some comments for the WiPs and completed bits:

@ Laborious - those Ogres are looking good so far, nice verdigris effect on the metallic sections.

@ Rootsmanuva - I am incredibly unsold on the whole Mantic range - personally I can't see it as the 'cheap but equally as good as GW' replacement some people seem to tout it as. Having said that, and bearing in mind the quality of your undead already, I'm sure you can make these guys look good.

@ Kaltheras - that Valkia is very nice indeed, nice and brutal looking. The brass warriors look good as well, looking forward to seeing more of your stuff.

Phew, I think that's probably enough from me for now.

Pretty happy with these so far, shouldn't be an issue to get the unit done by the end of the month. Although, my flash has done the usual job of making everything lighter and shinier than it actually is. I'll get some better pics in daylight on the weekend.

Cheers all :)

i must apologize to all for the lack of comments and overall involvement for this month, but exam madness has started :/

enough with me complaining about everything... i wanted to say that i really like the stuff everyone has put in for this month. also i have a picture i wanted to show u and hear what u think :)

http://i1192.photobucket.com/albums/aa321/Bogdan_Gnjatovic/VC%20tale/Skeletonunitfillerunit.jpg

so, its supposed to be a count as skeleton unit. the idea is that theirs bones have completely "wore out" from the constant reanimating by the necromancers. but even with nothing to reanimate the grip of the necromancer is to grate, so the very soul of the mortal is brought back to do his biding :D

so what do u think ?? and if any1 could tell me where i can order bunch of human skulls that would be great :)

EDIT: that is skulls for the skeleton minis :D

Hey Guys,

I rolled a 3 for my comments

@ Emperor Norton- I really like your fire belly. Great color, painting, and fire effect. I want to run one of these with my ogres, but I'm having too much fun with my beasts butcher.

Also, clean and fantastic dark elves. The old corsair champ model by chris fitzpatrick is one of my favorite DE models ever.

@Tekore-I like your woodies, I can tell you spent a ton of time on them. I have to agree with you about the brown wash. A watered down dark green glaze would work better. Same with your blue contrast color. Overall, good work, and very nice bases!

@Azhagmorglum- Put your brush down and step away from the minis!!!:D I know how your feel about finishing models, but these look great, so move on to the next 5. I love the weathering, the metals, the bases, the skin-tone everything. Great stuff......maybe some static grass.

@Rikk- Great shaman! That's some green-skin magic. The snake and the feathers on the goblin add an extra pop of color that are going to look great in a unit.

@Sharpy195- Fantastic production! Great bases, good painting, very solid effort. The warmachines look really striking, and stand out well.

@perplexiti- Dwarfs and Lizards. Good stuff here, very much ready for the table!

@Morhash Gorehowl- Nice fatties! I just fielded lead bealchers and the blaster for the first time last weekend to great effect. I'm loveing the new ogre rules. you've definately done these models justice. Great blaster too, you have a model to be proud of there.

Thanks confesor_atol.

Just to say I'm almost done for this month. It's gonna be basic orcs with command group. I won't be there in december so I'll use my first joker for month 4. Expect new work in january, when I plan to paint some characters and maybe a monster ( don't know which one for now). No wip pictures since this month's work is nearly completed like I sais before.

I wish you all good luck to finish this month !

Laborious - I don't like the Yhetee models, I think that they, along with the Gorgor, let the OK army down a great deal...... yet somehow I like these?! Maybe it's the colour scheme, or the bases, or both, but these look awesome! How did you do the fur as I think it's looks great

Thanks very much! It's been nice (and rather amusing) to get so much praise that has been proceeded by, "I REALLY hate those models, BUT. . ."! :) I totally agree with you about them however, and the gorger even more so - What were they thinking?!

As for how I did the fur, colonel kame trine asked for the recipe on my plog, so I’ll just quote myself if you don't mind.

@colonel kame trine -

Astronomican Grey base

heavy Assurman Blue wash all over

Heavily drybrush Astronmican grey back over it

More lightly drybrush a 75/25 Astronican grey / skull white mix over it, leaving any areas of heavy shade

Apply another wash of Assurman blue all over

Reapply the 75/25 grey & white mix again, leaving even more in the shade

Very lightly drybrush a 50/50 mix of the grey and white over areas which will catch the light.

Apply a 25/75 mix of grey and white to the ends of the long strands of hair in the mane and across the shoulders

Apply a very dilute glaze with Assurman blue to blend in the stages a bit more where needed

Apply pure skull white to the very tips of the strands on the mane and back

That's roughly how i did it, although you should however be told that I did initially airbrush the yhettes vallejo model air pale blue, but i pissed about with the fur so much that once i settled on the final scheme I'm sure that initial layer has been pretty much drybrushed and washed out of existence on the final models. You should be able to forgo that step and get [nearly] the same effect. :)

P.S @Kaltheras - Simply astonishingly good painting. Love the conversion, the knights banner, the WIP on the nurgle champion already looks brilliant and I think your bases are fantastic. I never would have thought to edge them in yellow, but it looks great. So yes, after all your hard work converting and painting my favourite bit is probably what took you the least amount of time and effort to do. :p

Ok chaps, comments for the 4's:

@Laborious - those are excellent Yhettees, the best I think I've seen. As other people have said, the fur is amazing, but how did you do the ice weapons?

@Rutgar - Ah, Lizards! (my first ever fantasy army!) - Those Saurus look good - well done for not going with the boring ass standard GW blue paint scheme!

@Juicytomatoes - He he he - I love the idea for this army, it has all the makings of a very characterful and unique army, I look forward to seeing how it develops over the course of this years tale - great painting too!

@Doi - Great skin tone there, very appropriate for DE.

@JonahMaul - The Hydra is looking great - I especially like the skin tones.

@Thalenchar - Very striking Chaos Warriors, the flame work on the cloaks has come out very well.

@Kaltheras - Wow! Valkia is an excellent conversion, everything about it just works. The painting is excellent, and the bases are amazing as well - well done!

Thanks to everyone who commented on my work - in reply to Doomscape, my skin tone recipe for my Ogres is spray Chaos Black undercoat, Hormagaunt Purple basecoat, then add 25% Shadow Grey to the purple for the first layer of highlight, followed by 25% Space Wolf Grey for the second layer of highlight, then blend it all back with a Leviathan Purple wash, watered down 50%. After that, when the rest of the model is painted I give the whole thing a 50% watered down wash of Devlan Mud.

Just popping in to say good work everyone! I'm in the middle of exams (last one tomorrow) so I'll try to get some comments up afterwards (and tell colonel kane trine how I do the snow). I should be able to get my Dark Elves done for the month since it is just characters but I might be pressed for time to get the Stonehorn done for my Ogres.

Hey all great work this month everyone from what I've seen! I'm sorry to say though I'm going to have to drop out due to work commitments. The army is far too unpredictable! I was hoping to get Octobers painted early this month and then catch up or use a joker for November but I've had no chance for any painting over the past 7 weeks and my next month is also fully booked until Christmas! Sincere apologies everyone.

Oh, well, a major problem occured which critically reduces my time available for painting. Skyrim was released. ;) Hope I get stuff done still, but progress may slow down a bit. :shifty:

Now, comment time for the 3's!

@EmperorNorton Ogres: I like the Firebelly. The skin looks ace and the flaming breath turned out great as well!
@EmperorNorton Dark Elves: Those old Corsairs are really lovely and you did them justice!

@JackDaw: Well, technically you rolled a 2, no 3...but your army looks so ace I just have to comment! The Emmissary conversion is subtle, yet very effective. Really one of my favourites...

@Tekore: Good looking Glade Guard, impressive work to finish a whole unit in a month!

@azhagmorglum: Great colour scheme on the Black Orcs. Especially the chipped colour turned out very good. Those old squigs are lovely as well!

@Rikk: Always good to have sufficient Greenskin magic, and yours looks good while providing it! The snake is a nice addition to an already beautiful model.

@Sharpy195:  So many-many rats! Impressive work... I also like the wood on your warmachines.

@perplexiti Dwarfs: Nice cannon crew. For the cannon itself, maybe a wash mit Devlan Mud/Badab Black to darken it a bit? Could be due to the lightning though...
@perplexiti Lizardmen: The eyes look good for me. They fit together really well with Ol' Oxy now.

@Fabius Bile: Those Mournfangs look ace, could you tell me how you did the fur? I'd love to do something similar for my Thundertusk!

@Kaltheras: Awesome painting. Everything looks great, be it the Knights, the Nurgle champion or Valkia!

Comments on comments:
@doomscape: It's a cannon which was looted during the War in the Heavens against the Sky Titans. :)

@JackDaw: Thanks a lot! The kit is a bit complex...if you ever dice to paint it: Do not assemble it before painting, each piece on its own works well, though.

@iamjack42: Yep, those cannonballs are indeed a piece which you place inside the barrel. The Rhinox was really easy to do, glad you like it!

@azhagmorglum: Thanks. The low model count is one of the best things for Ogres, so you can really focus on each model. Except Gnoblars, but well...nobody cares about them, eh? ;)

@CKT: Merci! I can only recommend the Ironblaster, if you have the chance, get one...great model and even better fire power!

@Jonahmaul: Thanks. I like the cannon the most as well!

@Confessor_Atol: Nice to hear you used them with good effect! Leadbelchers are really good now and you are never wrong with a cannon...on a T6 chariot! :D

Hopefully there will be some WIP's from me this month...as I said, Skyrim is time consuming. But worth every single second!

@Laborious - those are excellent Yhettees, the best I think I've seen. As other people have said, the fur is amazing, but how did you do the ice weapons?

Cheers! It's really, really simple, and discovered by accident:

Astronimican grey basecoat

Watery wash of vallejo electric blue (or gw ice blue) all over. Don't bother mixing the paint too much if it's separated in the pot, helps with the effect.

reapply astronomican grey as 1st highlight.

50/50 mix astronomican grey / skull white.

Skull white as a final highlight.

5's:

DAGabriel: Having all of them armed with the same type of weapon gives them a very coherent look which fits well with TKs imho.
That terrain piece is genius btw.

andrewdrexler: Not sure how you could "jazz them up" whilst maintaining the theme. Bright orange hair maybe? Might look slayer-like though.
Personally I don't think the photo is too large, though 640x480 has sort of been established as the ToFP standard.

Zark the Damned: This is looking like a real army already. Nice job on the paymaster!

gogs78: Very well painted miniatures, a real pleasure to look at.

iamjack42: Congrats! (Like the color scheme btw.)

Doi: When I say I think of you as the guy who paints the greatest trousers, bear in mind that I'm an Empire player, and since the removal of the "puffy" sleeves, the Empire is all about trousers. :)

The odd one out:
JackDaw: Not sure if I commented on your stuff last month, but I think everybody should say something about that original color schemes of your DEs at least ones. Genius kitbashing on the Emissary too.

Thanks for the compliments everyone, here's some replies:

DAGabriel: The pics are perhaps slightly washed out, but the highlights aren't the starkest, that's true. Maybe I'll dial it up a notch with the remaining 13 Horrors.

doomscape & colonel kane trine: I sorta just followed this tutorial (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?categoryId=cat440043a&pIndex=4&aId=10500004a&multiPageMode=true&start=5), but used a little more Dwarf Flesh in the mixes and unfortunately didn't highlight as well.

azhagmorglum: To be honest I'm not the biggest fan myself. As I mentioned before I'm painting these for a friend and he really digs this color scheme, also it doesn't take too long to paint them like this. And that's the biggest selling point really. :p

This month is flying by WAY too quickly.

Comments for the 5’s
DAGabriel (tk): Nice skellys. I love the tiny detail work on the standard. Have you thought about putting a tiny bit of static grass on the bases? GF9 repackages a very nice burnt\dead grass that would complement your basing scheme very nicely.
Zark the Damned (dow); Love the centaur in your light Calvary, what was the donor figure for the rearing horse???
Gargbot (doc): Love the horrors done in flesh color.
Gogs78 (he): Love the eagles. Are those machine screws for the base stem? The purple and gold for the phoenix guard works very well together. And the standard looks great too. Good job on painting the movement tray too.
Iamjack42 (he): Ellyrian reavers look nice. Are you going to go back and add basing later when the whole army is done, or just later on?
Doi (ok): Nice ogres, one small bit though.. the guy with the white pants is too clean.. his weapon is rusty, he looks like he has not bathed in a month, but he has on his freshly bleached white pants?

Other comments:
Tekore (WE); very nice for the rough and ready look that WE need to have. I like the use of moss in places on the bases. Are you going to be painting the movement bases as well?
Shandowner: Love the 300 style you have going. The swordmasters are hardcore. Where did you pick up the bases? And they did come out VERY nice.

Responses to the Responses:
DAGabriel: My matt has a tendency to not be so matt. I might order some flat coat from Testers at the end of the tail if it keeps going THAT glossy though.
JackDaw: Thanks.. I was not sure if the cloaks were working or not.
Roostmanuva: It is only 10… the rest of the unit is coming this month.
Doomscape: I am not sure.. opinion is pretty evenly divided from people who I talk to. Some people like the yellow.. some people think it is a little off. Once I get more of the army together and see how it all looks together it will be more obvious if they belong or not.
Iamjack42: Thank you, this is the third or fourth start I have made on this project over the years. I have never been happy with it until now.
MorglumNecksnapper: I wish I could paint 1\2 as well as I could do basing hehe.
ColonelKaneTrine: Thanks. About to go back into construction mode for December to convert up some more feral gg.
Azhagmorglum: The bases are what make the color scheme of this army work really well. Its been interesting working with a limited pallet over multiple units.
Jonahmaul: The leaves are birch seed pods. A friend of mine harvested some and sent them to me. No color has been added to them, that is just the shade of pod that came from that tree.
Gargobot: I am glad the picture is not too big, I picked up an actual figure and put it up against the monitor to compare and was a little shocked that the figure was 1\2 the size of the picture.

@Morkash - my Mournfang fur was painted as follows (as far as I can recall lol):

Chaos Black spray undercoat, Scorched Brown basecoat, heavy drybrush of Vermin Brown, followed by a 75% Vermin Brown 25% Bleach bone mix medium Drybrush, followed by a 50% watered down Devlan Mud wash, followed by a 50/50 Vermin Brown/Bleached Bone Mix light Drybrush, followed by a very light Bleached Bone Drybrush, and then a final 50% watered down Devlan Mud wash.

Tempus fugit...
And after all these years I still have not managed to learn to write down comments as the entries trickle in, which leaves me with a huge amount of stuff to comment on.
Regrettably I don't have the time to comment on everything, so here's my comments on the 3s and some others I could not resist giving my opinion on:

@ Laborious: Sorry to hear about your Finecast troubles. Not a fan myself. The result looks good, though, a very nice scheme for Yhetees.

@ Roostmanuva: Very nice base for your Wraiths. I like their ghostly green colour, too.

@ JackDaw: Very cool colour scheme, in every sense of the word.

@ Tekore: The blue is an interesting addition to the classic green WE colour scheme. I like it.

@ azhagmorglum: The scratches and wear on the armour is great, I canít seem to get that right.

@ Rikk: Yes, a bit more light would be a good thing. From what I can make out these look good, though. The detail on the snake is a nice touch.

@ Gargobot: These truly deserve the name Horrors. The colour is fantastic, it makes them look somewhat natural (as opposed to the bright pink these are usually painted in), like warped beings out of flesh, which adds to the horror.

@ Great horned owl: A fantastic little diorama!

@ Sharpy195: 500 points of Skaven per month is a very ambitious goal. I truly am in awe at the amount you have already finished. The highlight for me is the Doomwheel.

@ perplexiti: I like the neutral colour for the Chameleon Skinks, should help them to blend into the background. The Dwarfs could be a bit neater, though.

@ Morglum Necksnapper: Holy cow, those are awesome! The Ďcloud of dustí is a genius idea. Canít wait to see these finished.

@ Doi: The sorceress looks slightly puzzled. Aside from that sheís pretty damn fine.

@ Shandowner: A great combination of the bases, the conversions and the colours. They just seem a little buff for elves.

@ Morkash: The Ironblaster looks truly fantastic. The Ogresí skin looks a bit flat, though, but maybe thatís just because of the pictures.

@ Kaltheras: I imagined Valkia to be a bit more feminine, but itís a nice conversion nonetheless. That WIP looks promisingly disgusting.

Replies to all the wonderful people nice enough to comment on my stuff:

@EmperorNorton: Sweet, that firebelly looks the buisness man, shame about finecast though, I haven't gotten any and probably won't be after hearing all the issues with it. Great dark elves too, that blood is a nice touch. Thanks! Probably a good decision about FinecastÖ

@ EmperorNorton: Very cool, love nearly everything about that firebellyÖexcept the nails which seem too white. But that is a very minor detail.
The Corsairs are top notch, only the string of coagulated blood should drip vertically.
Right, I could make the nails a bit dirtier. But since he has a very clean look overall I think it works this way, too. He probably burns away all the dirt.
As for the blood on the Corsair, itís the wind blowing it to the side.

Thank you!

@EmperorNorton-Love both your entries this month! Those elf command figures are top notch.
Thank you kindly.

EmperorNorton (Ogre) - Oh, heck. I have to buy this stupid model, it just looks too good. Your work with the flames is most impressive! I like it much more than GWís.
EmperorNorton (Dark Elves) Ė That is some really good conversion work. I am seriously hopelessly outclassed by you folks. Love the blood trail!
Itís flattering that you want to buy a model because of my paintjob, but since it is finecast I canít really recommend buying it.
As or being outclassed, thatís exactly what I thought when I first joined the Tale a few years ago. I never imagined somebody would ever feel outclassed by my painting. I guess regular practice pays off after all.

@EmperorNorton Very nice Firebelly and Dark Elves. Your colors are really deep and vibrant, and impressively smooth. I particularly like the green scales.
Thank you.

@ EmperorNorton : great firebelly, the skin and flames are top notch. I like the leaf-covered base too (are these leaves?).
Sorry to hear about the finecrap problems. Really puts me off buying anything resin from GW...
No, those are not leaves, but basing grit. The bases are supposed to look like steppe.

EmperorNorton
Great work on the flame, good job all around. I'm scared of the dark elf heroes.
No need to be scared, when they are not raiding and pillaging they are decent fellows.

@emperornorton-really like the firebelly how did you paint the skin and the flame? it looks great!
The skin is painted with several layers of Vallejoís Heavy Skintone and GWís Tallarn Flesh with washes of Ogryn Flesh and Gryphon Sepia in between. Fairly easy, but time-consuming.
The flame was basecoated in Iyanden Darksun, followed by drybrushing in Blazing Orange, Blood Red, Adeptus Battelgrey and black. The recesses were painted with a mix of Iyanden Darksun and white.

@emperornorton (dark elves)-i really like these and cant wait to see what you put on the banner pole. the scheme is great and itll be nice to see a full army of these
Hopefully it will be, but I still have my doubts that I can keep up the motivation to finish the whole army.

EmperorNorton - glad your happy as it looks great, really like the effect you've got in the flame/smoke. Good work on the DE's too, I share your lack of Dark Elf inspired motivation!
Thank you. Maybe there is some kind of Dark Elf Motivational Seminar we could attend. But that would probably entail thing Iím not comfortable with.

@ Emperor Norton- I really like your fire belly. Great color, painting, and fire effect. I want to run one of these with my ogres, but I'm having too much fun with my beasts butcher.
My solution in that situation would be to use both, of course.

Also, clean and fantastic dark elves. The old corsair champ model by chris fitzpatrick is one of my favorite DE models ever.
Thatís why I promoted him from champ to hero. He deserves it!

@EmperorNorton Ogres: I like the Firebelly. The skin looks ace and the flaming breath turned out great as well!
@EmperorNorton Dark Elves: Those old Corsairs are really lovely and you did them justice!
Thank you, sir!

Special thanks to Braad for his interesting graphs!

Hi guys! Sorry for this very late post, work was just terrible the entire month! I really did not want to joker this month since (i) there have been so many jokers already, and (ii) I actually only had to do four archers to complete my second unit. Anyway, here's my Month 2 entry:

The Muster of Quenelles
2,000 points (Men)

MONTH 2 POINTS: 70 pts
TOTAL POINTS PAINTED: 140 pts
JOKERS USED: 0

UNIT: 10 Peasant Bowmen; Musician, Brazier: 70 points.

BACKGROUND/THEME: The standing army of the Dukedom of Quenelles. I love Bretonnians and this will be a showcase army for me. I will use blue and white for my army's colours, with green as an accent color. Being in the shadow of Athel Loren, I want to play with a connection to Elves-- although nothing explicit like conversions or count as models. I will do this by keeping my palette reminiscent of HE and WE armies and keeping a "clean" look throughout. (Quite a challenge for me, coming off from an all Night Gobbo Army).

BUILD/CONVERSION: For this month, 5th edition Peasant Bowmen are positioned in a way to make them rank up neatly behind their Defensive Stakes and Braziers. I also stripped and re-painted my old 5th edition Bowmen Musician to lead this unit.

PAINTING: Ultramarine Blue plus more and more Bleached Bone for the blue. Bleached bone plus many thin layers of Skull White for the white.

BASING: Sand painted with Graveyard Earth, drybrushed Fortress Grey, washed with Scorched Brown. Glued Static Grass in clumps to finish it off.

STILL TO DO: Details (especially on the faces). Maybe when I have more time though..

HIGHS: Finally finishing the unit.

LOWS: Taking three weeks to paint four assembled and primed Peasant Bowmen. And I'm still very much behind on points. I'm confident though that I'll catch up along the way.

DICE ROLL: 3

Month 2 entry:

Finally had chance to comment and respond to messages!

EmperorNorton - Liking the Firebelly, the fire effect has worked well on him. Shame about the Finecast troubles...

gogs78 - The Elves continue to impress, the banner bearer especially turned out well.

And some replies:

Great looking DoW, those birdmen are crazy! Are they on 40mm bases?
They certainly are 40mm bases, pretty sure these guys would fall over all the time on anything less :D

Do the pirates! Good job on the rest of them, but I don`t really like the centaur. The bases seem a little uniform and sterile.
Unfortunately I already started on my next unit before seeing this, but I'll try to get the pirates done soon. The basing is intentionally a bit bland, I prefer to make the mini itself stand out.

those birdmen look cool but maybe change the flying stands so they have differing heights? i love the marauder horsemen and that mordheim hunter is one of my favourite miniatures!
It's hard to tell from the pic, but the Birdmen do have different heights - though maybe I will make it more pronounced sometime.

woah, those birdmen of catrazza are a rare sight around here. It's agreeable to see different minis sometimes. And the painting is great.
The indian centaur is a cool conversion also.

Love the centaur in your light Calvary, what was the donor figure for the rearing horse???
I wish I could take credit for it, but it's actually from Heresy Miniatures :)

Work is going well on this month's unit. First rank done, second rank is getting there. Ended up going for my Paymaster's Bodyguard, though also undercoated a couple more cannons too. If I finish the unit soon I may do one of them too :)

Thanks! Probably a good decision about FinecastÖ

Well my son wanted a Zoanthrope for his Tyranids so we took the finecast plunge! It's actually pretty nice. A couple of small holes (Which considering the cost shouldn't be there at all) and an extra vent piece of it's back! But so easy to glue together.

Ok, time for me to come clean... I haven't painted any fantasy in the last month...

I've really tried to but each time my attentions go somewhere else... and worse yet it's still painting...

Yes I've been bitten by the Hordes bug, and although I haven't painted any Fantasy stuff I've painted enough for a full army of Everblight.

What does this mean? Well this is my first joker... ever...

It shames me, and I was REALLY trying to avoid it, but I can't deny it any longer.

I have the full unit of trolls sitting on my work bench, primed and with the first color, and when I do finish them I'll quickly be up to speed but right now I'm a slacker.

I'll be putting up comments in the next couple of days for everyone else's work.

I'm ashamed of both of you! *nervously eyes Flames of War stuff* Umm, well, that is...Hey, I'm not on trial here! I got my entry done for this month! What's that? It was only 100 points and it was a single character? Ya, that's true...:o

It's alright boys, that's what the jokers are for, and at least you're painting something, which is really what all of this is about!

Well I've almost finished my stuff for this month, by which I mean November, even though we're only a week away from the end of the month! Pictures of 3 finished Ogre's in next couple of days and then painting as much as possible to make sure I stay on track and can post earlier in the month in December!

Many thanks for the fur painting, Fabius Bile! I added a thin Bleached Bone/Vomit Brown layer in between and it turned out ok until now, I think. :)

Skyrim is still time consuming, though. Heck, you even can marry... o.O

Yeah! What you said!

Actually I just received some Sylvanian reinforcements from a dear Canadian friend of mine, and I'm feeling inspired to break away from basecoating hoplons to start painting some purple again...we'll see if I can make it by the 30th.

Sorry to say that due to real life stuff (moving house), I'm going to have to throw in the blood-stained towel with my Dark Elves this year. Unless I can make a comeback at a later date, Han Solo style.

Again really impressed with everyones work this month, some nice looking armies out there so far.

Had a really productive month and painted a 8 man unit of Ogre Bulls.

Converted and painted my Bruiser BSB and made a start on 4 Mournfang cavalry.

Also decided to start up a 2400pts WOC army & finished converting and painting my BSB to lead from the front.

I blame this thread for my plastic crack habit to WFB, lol.

Lookin forward to seeing everyones pics.

Comments:

Laborious: For ugly models you did a good job on them. Great bases too.

colonel kane trine: The amount of good quality work you do is amazing!

Zujara: I like that shade of green on the trolls. I've been fighting for a month on picking which one to use on mine.

Thalenchar: The blue mask on the face seems to draw away from the rest of the model.

Roostmanuva: Great conversion ideas. That vampire lord is really going to stand out.

EmperorNorton: Perfectly done firebelly. The dripping blood from the axe looks very cool.

JackDaw: The model is almost hypnotizing...

DAGabriel: The tiny detail on the banner is amazing.

Tekore: I think the brown wash is working fine.

daismith906: Those are the meanest smurfs I've ever seen!

andrewdexler: Pooling wash can be a real **** off. Just know that the vast majority of people will never notice it.

Confessor_Atol: Not sold on the skin, but I like the fur.

azhagmorglum: Hat off for taking the time to do chipped paint.

Rikk: Skin color doesn't look too dark to me.

Zark the Damned: Very cool. Your army is going to be amazing when you're finished.

doomscape: The colors are ones that are usually paired, but it almost seems fitting for a daemon.

Frejdruk: I can understand how you would get bored with the riders. They really are just usual ogres with different weapons.

Gargobot: Creepy... I like it!

Rutgar: Great way to start. Now just keep it up!

Kharn_21: Seems there is more you can pick out, but still a great amount of models done.

dagreenmoonboyz: Haven't seen a green arachnarok before. I like it!

Great horned owl: I love it! Great idea and well pulled off conversion.

gogs78: Your basing skills are leaps and bounds ahead of mine.

Avian: It's conversions like these that make a good looking army go to amazing.

Kaos: They look finished to me...

juicytomatos: When they look as cool like this you don't need to paint much.

JohnnyG: Looking good. Those big models can catch you up quick.

Sharpy195: You got all that done in one month?!?!?

gsmc: At least we flunked this month together...

perplexiti: Did you really paint rifling into the barrel?

iamjack42: Those look very cool. You're making my glade riders jelous!

Morglum Necksnapper: The wings seem out of place, but I like the conversions overall.

Doi: I think she needs eyebrows. Otherwise nice and clean.

Fabius Bile: Still not sold on the purple ogres. That's a good bunch of mornfang though.

Arduhn: I think some sort of ornament on top of the staff would make him look more like a wizard.

Jonahmaul: Nothing wrong with getting a hydra done. Hope your motivation returns.

Shandowner: I REALLY want to have a game against you once you are finished.

Thalenchar: The flaming robes look great. Might have been cool to do the same thing on the shields on the front.

Darnok: Ha! Love it!

Morkash: Those ironblasters are nasty. It will serve you well.

Hi, can I join in with my Skaven? I think I'll have to join the boys if that alright I have a couple of armies on the go an I am dodging between them.

For me this will be a good motivator to paint more of my army as I already have ~5k painted (maybe over 300 figures) but havent done much of it over the past few months.

I'll work out what to paint to start in December.

Thanks

Wow, am I un-inspired or what?!? I can think of a million things more fun than painting the dwarfs. Never had to struggle this hard. In fact, they get the "study effect" from me. This means that whenever i think of starting to paint them i find something else to do instead with the words "iīm just going to do this and theeeen its the dwarfs". So this have happened alot and the result is this:

Finally finished roof on my houseproject.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r140/Chaoslorden/DSC_0016.jpg

Built a unit of Tzeentch Warriors:

With these to be converted into warriors:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r140/Chaoslorden/DSC_0006.jpg
And a unit of Chosen Nurgle Warriors and a Sorcerer:

So yeah... *cough* Dwarfs are NOT my cup of bearded tea..

So.....I've really finished and here's some pictures! First of all a couple of big shout outs, first of all to Jackdaw for the advice on painting the skin and second to Fabius Bile for his rusted metal recipe. I've used both of these (slightly modified) to what I think is great effect.

Ogre Kingdoms (Boys)

UNIT: 3 Bulls

POINTS THIS MONTH: 96

BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight out of the box but with small holes drilled into all the metal bits to show weaterhing/rot. Also have some patches of green stuff to show puckered skin which I've painted different too.

PAINTING: Skin is Tallarn flesh > 50/50 Tallarn/Rotting highlight > 30/70 Tallarn/Rotting > 10/90 Tallarn/Rotting. Then has couple of thinned down green washes with a thinned purple wash in under their armpits/moobs/face. The puckered skin gets a purple wash and then some red washes. Rust is painted with patches of turquoise first (especially concentrating around the holes and joins) then drybrushed/stippled with scorched followed by snakebite followed by mecharus orange and finished with chainmail. Teeth/nails are denheb with couple of Sepia washes. Pants are blue or red and then finished off with light drybrush of graveyard earth for dirt.

BASES: These were made and then cast for my by a friend to help with the nurgle theme. They are painted with chandron granite for the earth and differents combinations of green for all the growths and slime. Slime was finished off with gloss varnish after models were matt varnished.

HIGHS: Finally getting them done! I'm pretty happy with how they've come out too and looking forward to doing more. I think the biggest high is that it's got me motivated to do this army again and motivated to paint in general so looking forward to getting stuff done.

LOWS: That it's taken me so long in the month to get these done leaving me little time to get stuf done for both tales for next month. I think the skin looks a little like the old style OK skin but once the army comes together more I think it will start to look more like a Nurgle army.

NEXT MONTH: another 3 bull (command group) to round off this unit. I'm looking forward to doing them too as they'll have a little bit more conversion on them so give the unit more of a nurgle theme.

Marlorian - I should be in the boys league for OK and Dark Elves (was Men's on latter but dropped down) and have posted a Hydra for this month for the Elves. My OK may jump up to Men's after Christmas depending on how much time I've got and what santa brings!

Hope im ok joining this late, i have entered a 3000pts tournament for march so i need to paint alot of lizardmen and i have found this thread good motivation.

MOMUS: Mens

UNIT: 2X10 skink skirmishers, 10 chameleon skinks, 15 'temple guard', skink chief

POINTS THIS MONTH: ~622

BUILD/CONVERSION: Slight conversion on the chief (shield). I havent flocked the TG yet as im wondering if they will look good with 'slabs' of rock scattered on their bases, this would link in with the jungle fort im also making in the Taleofterrainmakers thread

HIGHS: Getting a chunk of my lizards done, im also really pleased how the bases have come out.

LOWS: Knowing i have a ton more skinks to paint (its a southlands list)

NEXT MONTH: Skink hordes

*Excuse the bad pics, not very good light here.

Tables updated, I'll try not to forget to send them to Malorian tomorrow.

Oh I forgot, I'm in the midst of my tomb kings entry for the next 2 months. It's a sphinx worth about 220 points, so I'm spreading it over 2 months. Does this count as a joker? I don't have pics at the moment though, hope it's okay.

Depends... if you post some halfway-done pics in the first month, it's okay to claim half the points. But you can also use a joker and buy it back. Whatever suits you.

So, if hypothetically one were really, really close to hitting their target on their army, could they start another one after that?

Yes. If it keeps you painting, it's usually fine.

What does this mean? Well this is my first joker... ever...

Why?
As far as my table shows, you painted more than 400 last month, so you don't need to pull a joker. Or are my numbers wrong?

@malorian

I've got to apologise for not commenting this month but I've been pressed for time between end of year exams for uni and then switching to 40+ hour weeks at work the very next day. However, you've all been kind enough to take the time to comment on my work so you all deserve replies (belated as they may be :p).

@Doi: The skin on that sorceress is beautiful mate! Well done. The ironguts look good too man.

Doi (Dark Elf) - nice work on the Sorceress, the skin has come out very nicely.

Doi (Ogres) - again, nice work. I like the differing trousers, really helps to break up the unit a little and make each model a bit individual.

@Doi lovely skin on that sorceress. But I think Iím most impressed with the purple. Iím having a little more trouble making out the Ogre pics, but the hammer on the Ogre with the white and blue striped pants looks amazing.

Doi: That's a cracker of a paintjob on the DE sorceress! Those eyes... those eyes...!

@Doi-Think your paint job on the elf suits the snow base to a tee.

@Doi (Dark Elves): Very nice Sorceress. The loverly purple fits well with the skin tone you used. Looks great! Also, love your snowy bases.

@Doi - Great skin tone there, very appropriate for DE.

Thanks fellas!

@ Doi: ShiverÖ don`t you think a slightly blue skin tone would have been more appropriate? And regarding those testosterone bullies, the designer seemd to have been inspired by Obelix? Nice basing!

Well I figured Dark Elves have a thing for pain and discomfort :shifty:. And I only noticed the Obelix parallel when I'd taken the pictures!

Doi (Dark Elf) Ė Oh, the work youíve done on her face is superlative. I can never get eyes to do that. Like how clean the skin-work is too. How DOES her shirt stay on?

Doi (Ogres) Ė I am very happy with the conversion as well Ė inspired!

I just pretend the shirt is tattooed on :shifty:.

Doi - Nice sorceress. Skin looks good, and the face excellent (if her expression is a little bit confused ). Only negative is the model itself is a little bland in terms of details, Iíd have been inclined to paint there hair a different colour to the boots myself, just to add another point of interest.

I plan on re-working the eyes a bit to try and fix the expression.

I left the colours as they are because I've gone for a rather unimaginative black, purple and silver colour scheme for the army as a whole :shifty:

@doi- ilove that model and your scheme looks awesome! how did you do the snow?
the conversion on the irongt looks cool and they are also painted very well! good job all round!

I've recently switched to a new method for my snow so I now use a mix of PVA, bi-carb soda and white paint (I always tamper with the mix until it feels just right but its probably somewhere around the 4:5:1 mark for the ratio). The mix is applied with a ice-cream stick and shaped with a wet finger (to stop the mix from sticking to my finger). Just ask if you've got any further questions.

Doi Ė great stuff once again, looking forward to seeing light box inspired pictures to appreciate them more! That weapon is just about the only thing I like about the current maneaters so great to see it used!

Thanks mate. I should probably get around to finally buying that light box then, eh?

Doi: When I say I think of you as the guy who paints the greatest trousers, bear in mind that I'm an Empire player, and since the removal of the "puffy" sleeves, the Empire is all about trousers. :)

That's high praise indeed coming from you :o. If you have any requests for colours I'll try and work them in somewhere!

Doi (ok): Nice ogres, one small bit though.. the guy with the white pants is too clean.. his weapon is rusty, he looks like he has not bathed in a month, but he has on his freshly bleached white pants?

Well actually the one with white pants this month has a stone weapon so it can't rust but its a valid point for the rest of my army. Think of it as keeping hold of a favourite weapon but changing pants with the flags of vanquished enemies every time the old ones get dirty. Yeah, that's it :shifty:. Nah, to be honest it all started with my test models. I had just come across a really cool rust method before I started this army that I couldn't go without using but when it came around to dirtying up the pants in the final stages I thought the bright colours really made them pop so I left them as is.

@ Doi: The sorceress looks slightly puzzled. Aside from that sheís pretty damn fine.

Yeah, I'm hoping to fix that expression with a purple wash around the eyes so she doesn't look so suprised.

Doi: I think she needs eyebrows. Otherwise nice and clean.

It is something I've always considered but I've never gotten my hands on a small enough brush :p.

Doi
