View Full Version : Super Dungeon Explore - cute as can be

What a brilliant game! Hails back to the days of the nintendo style and gauntlet hack n slash dungeon crawl sort of video games

At first glance you may think a pretty shallow cutesy basic dungeon crawl game but once you work out the interaction between heroes and minions the tactical options open right up. played our first game last Tuesday and thoroughly enjoyed it, will be playing a 'super' game this coming Tuesday!

Oh and let's not forget those fantastic cartoony miniatures and huuuuuuge scope for expansion sets! google the game there are plenty of ref pics of the assembled minis about

Anyhow, made a start the other day, figured I would start with the spawn points and for some reason 'Angry bear' to get my hand in and work out how I was gonna approach these things, nice n bold me reckons :D

This is how it comes, prepare for some down time before you can play/paint, each one of those FIFTY TWO miniatures arrived in approx 5 parts, pretty straight forward to assemble to be honest but your gonna have to use superglue, no liquid poly here I'm afraid!

Here are the 5 spawn points in the base game, Kobold and Denizen. Also Angry Bear, he actually the Druid shapeshifter character in his animal form!

Hoping for some nice weather next week so I can get stuck into the rest!

28-11-2011, 08:04
finished the heroes and a few other bits n pieces, hope you enjoy, these little guys are fun to paint!

Our hapless band of heroes, don't you just want to hug them!

28-11-2011, 08:04
An example of the spawn point cards, they tell you what you as consul (a play on console me thinks!) start the game with, while you can spawn any creatures from any spawn point (up to the skull limit) once all types of any particular spawn point is destroyed you cannot spawn any of those creature types!

You also get a selection of treasure chests

Be careful though because some bite back!!!

An example of a creature/hero card, everything required for game play is on the card as well as a neat little back story, the items you find neatly tuck into one of the sides of the card that matches the jewel on hero cards (generally magic, armour weapon, etc)

Check out all those different possible conditions! As I said, at first glance looks a fun little game but for is lots of scope for a deeper game as long as the custard creams and jaffa cakes don't run out!

Finally here is the map provided in the manual, very Nintendo! As you can see lots of room for expansions, this box set currently takes place at number two, starfire mountain

This game has been getting a fair amount of buzz here and around the net, you've got some very nicely painted heroes though! Lookin good so far, I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of your set painted.

28-11-2011, 18:08
Wow the models look superb painted like that, love the rogue.

28-11-2011, 18:21
Amazing paintjobs!

28-11-2011, 22:24
Gah - how did you get them all painted so fast to such a great standard!?!?

28-11-2011, 23:30
Looks Fab the Heros are  youve done a Great job , whats it like to play?

29-11-2011, 21:01
Absolutely stunning paintjobs there - you should let the makers of the game know about this thread - brilliant.

30-11-2011, 05:22
Wow thats fantastic painting! Great work, very inspirational.

Did you have any problems assembling any of the models? My Hexcast sorceress seems to have a bit of a miscast in the arm joint, the arm won't fit at all.

02-12-2011, 07:44
Lots of fun to play and can be quite tactical when you look at how the characters and minions can interact with each other, really looking forward to any expansions! Planning on having a 'super' game this Tuesday

Only miniature that springs to mind stuart was the barbarian on which the arms wouldnt connect correctly, just filled the gap with pva, didnt even trim the flash from the figures, they are pretty clean and I am just a lazy painter!

Apart from that a few bent spears on the gougers which I took care of with a little warm water

Anyhow, few more of the little guys finished

Flingers have a ranged attack and a natty smoke bomb option

Ironscales are the elite of your foot troops and as well as dishing out the hurt can provide an effective defense for the rest of your minions!

Hatchlings, new born drakes 'ahhh bless look at his cute little eyes, aaaaaaargh nooooo not the face. NOT THE FA..............'

Whelps are a little more independent and can be tough opponents when used alongside your other minions abilities

Wyrmlings are a little more developed and have started sprouting wings, if they survive those nasty death dealing heroes they will eventually grow up to be big daddy drakes!

02-12-2011, 08:45
Would you be king enough to post a painting guide? and a list of colours used as those minis are beautiful!

02-12-2011, 09:37
Wonderful work, thats a really nice price for the amount of quality minis and game items.
Are they done by air brush?

02-12-2011, 11:09
Wow thats a fantastic colour scheme for the baby dragons, great work!

02-12-2011, 19:31
Brilliant paintjobs! You did an excellent job!

03-12-2011, 03:32
Would you be king enough to post a painting guide? and a list of colours used as those minis are beautiful!

Totally seconded! Those baby dragons are amazing, that color is perfect! I was really hoping Soda Pop would have some sort of painting guide done before I started in on my set. Now I'll just pester Bulldog :P

Why not come up with your own? I had loads of fun doing up my kobolds and dragons as blue instead of red!

The traditional chromatic colors are white, black, red, blue, and green. Seems like a good variety of colors, no?

03-12-2011, 10:09
Brilliant paintjob! Did you do the metal parts with metal colours or NMM? It's really hard to tell from the pictures...

03-12-2011, 13:24
What do we have to do in order to get a painting tutorial from you?

03-12-2011, 13:44
Honestly I have tried to do tuts before and I just can't get my head round stopping to take pictures once I start a mini its go go go all the way to the end!
Not a great believer anyhow I much prefer the experiment and experience route, you only need to know the basics of how to handle a brush and the rest is down to experience, think I have the first ever figure I painted somewhere (on old DnD model) I will dig it out one day and show you how time improves any skill!

I use a relatively small collection of colours and hardly ever mix as it just saves time to do it that way with my style, I had never picked up an airbrush before I bought mine and just dived straight in and winged it, it is much more fun that way and it really isn't that difficult and I only use basic techniques to lay down prime colours, I finish most of the miniatures with brush blending

Saying that I will try and force a tut out on these, however it will have to be when the expansions are released because as we speak the varnish on the boss figures is drying so I am all out of unpainted SDE figures!

Nefelenwen, all metallics mate simply matt varnished when done.

Rest of the grunts finished!

Dragon Priests, lots of buffing type powers

Gougers, great to attack from behind your tougher troops as they have extra reach with those spears

Knuckleheads, good all rounders

03-12-2011, 16:45
This is stunning work. Honestly it's almost exactly how I'd want mine to look :) all the color choices are bang-on. Question: black or white primer?

I'm a bit late to this thread, but I'd like to add my voice to the choir praising your painting skills and the results you've achieved on these mini's.

In looking closely at what you've done with the minis, I have to ask how much time you've spent studying the art style which originally inspired the sculpts themselves? I'm thinking of the way you painted the eyes on some of the characters. It looks very much like a drawing and adds tremendously to the look of your final results.

Max Jet
04-12-2011, 09:40
You do not have to take Photos, it would help tremendously to tell us your technique.
Did you use a Brush? What size? An Airbrush? Did you use glazing or washes? How many layers of colours? Did you prime with black or white. How much water do you apply to your paints. How long do you need per miniature? This would help us greatly, thank you very much for this. Also you might want to put it into the Fantasy or random blog section, this is stuff for the legends.

05-12-2011, 11:04
Hi Darsc Zacal, with gaming minis like these I generally just have the card/manual next to me that has any reference art and paint 'em similar, not only does this save me the time of having to think up colour schemes when it comes to identifying minis in game it helps a bundle! (Dust Tactic is a prime example)

Max jet, I will try and put a little guide together, little stuck for time as I type but will sort summat out over the next couple of days. main prob I have with doing tuts is 90% of my mini painting is done simply to chill and relax and as such I really don't take much notice of how I actually get to the finished product, I haven't changed much of my technique for the 20 odd years I have been painting apart from discovering the use of an airbrush to lay down base colours quicker a few years ago so I apologise as I just assume most of my methods are pretty basic and common knowledge and don't really need to be shown! 99% of my finished product boils down to the thousand I painted before it and simply having learned through experience where to dot the 'I's and cross the 'T's. I suppose if I can offer a few shortcuts for people out there I better post something pronto! :)

Bosses done, jobs a good 'un! On to the next project, hopefully be having a 'super' version of this game this Tuesday so will try and get some pics of everything in play now its all painted

Rex is the 'miniboss', he is really just misunderstood and needs a big hug (you can field up to two minibosses in a super-game)

05-12-2011, 11:06
Starfire is the main man, Da Boss!

And finally a few pictures of the entire collection of minis you get in the core set, all in all was a nice fun project, certainly different from painting the usual 40k stuff!

05-12-2011, 15:02
Wow. That dragon and Rex is absolutely amazing! Easily the best painting I have seen on SDE models. The blending between shades on the skin is particularly impressive.

05-12-2011, 17:25
That must be one of the best painted copies in existence right now :D It looks just amazing and would be a ton of fun to play with. I'm probably 75% done my own set. With Rex I find myself a little confused by his club - it looks like rock but has horns sticking out of it. Almost thought it was bone or meat :D

Still wondering if you prime white or black.

05-12-2011, 21:03
I was thinking the same regarding Rex Orangecoke, the club looks almost organic but I took the lazy option and opted for good old fashioned 'big rock grey' :)

Undercoat in black mate as I find it works with the airbrushed base colours to create its own shadows and dark areas then I just fill things in with the good old hairy stick!

09-12-2011, 05:32
Another question: what color did you use for the monsters' eyes (the yellow)? Actually I'm curious about the pupils too :D

09-12-2011, 07:35
Stop making me want these minis! I am in love with your blending technique. I suppose the technique would be less effective on GW miniatures, but for these... Pure mastery!

I know you are hesitant, but you would make so many people happy if you would do a tut on how you blend your paints and apply them.

10-12-2011, 07:39
Seriously - those miniatures are decent models but the painting on them makes them look amazing.

06-12-2012, 14:48
Great to see 3 new expansions out for this game, got all 3 and will persevere to paint them between other stuff.

Here is the first one 'Fireflow Denizens'...

The contents f the box, 4 new monsters, a new spawn point and a new item of treasure

The new spawn point allows all the new monsters to be included

Definately a fire theme going on here!

When the bigger Burning gels are destroyed it's not over, they explode into these little beggers!

Cute n burny

The burrow skill looks like it could be quite annoying for our brave heroes!

Next up the Roxor set which includes turtle mounted cannons, turtles, turtles and more turtles and even giant turtles!

07-12-2012, 03:45
They look fantastic, well done! Thanks for posting.

11-12-2012, 16:50
Rocktop gangs finished TURTLE POWER!

This is what comes in the box, 4 different monster classes a couple of spawn points and a couple of new treasure cards

These are fun, when threatened they can retreat into their shells giving them immunity and extra armour! just replace the model with the shell lol

And with those shells lets play Turtle Hockey!

Turtle mounted cannons!

The spawn points

The big nasty 'un

Next up caverns of roxor set, pretty much a repeat of both the smaller box sets but has a couple of large monsters including the Roxor boss and lots of new treasure cards

19-12-2012, 06:49
I think I've worked out just WHY I don't like this game or it's aesthetics.
I wasn't part of that generation with the cutesy nintendo games - I went from having an Atari (80s) to a PS2 (2002) with no console gaming at all in between.
Chibi has never been something I've been fond of.

The game itself plays fine - it' just that I can't make myself like the style of models - which defeats the purpose of getting it for me.

19-12-2012, 09:23
Those paint jobs are absolutely stunning. And make me reaslise that i've had my copy for a year and not even stuck the dragon together properly yet! Looks like that's Christmas sorted!

21-12-2012, 14:50
Caverns of Roxor expansion finished, here's what you get in the box...

Roxor, the big boss of this expansion

Rock Gut, his sidekick

And not forgetting 3 new heroes!

21-12-2012, 18:34
As usual fantastic painting!

21-12-2012, 22:28
Absolutely stunning job.

29-12-2012, 22:54
Quick question on the expansions. Di you buy the 3 seperately or just the big boxed one as I literally only found out they even released expansions but I am slightly confused as to whether I need to buy the 3 or just the big one?

On topic:
Cracking painting on these, really need to get started on my own SDE box

29-12-2012, 23:21
The expansion will give you one each of the Fireflow Denizens and the Rock Top Gang (the latter get two Spawn Points per selection like Kobolds so you get three Spawn Points in totalin CoR). You also get three Heroes and some Treasure cards.

29-12-2012, 23:35
So if I buy the £45 box I dont need to buy the 2 20 odd quid ones or do I? Hell or should I anyway?

30-12-2012, 07:15
So if I buy the £45 box I dont need to buy the 2 20 odd quid ones or do I? Hell or should I anyway?

Hi Mate, the larger expansion includes a rocktop gang with two spawn points, fire denizens with one spawn point, rockgut (troll) and Rox (boss) and 3 heroes, plus a bunch of treasure cards and some terrain effect cards

The smaller expansion sets are effectively just repeats of the fire denizens and rocktop with spawn points, however you do also get treasure cards exclusive to said box sets and not included in the larger expansion. Hell, I say go buy em all you can never have too many turtle mounted cannons I say!

30-12-2012, 09:27
It really depends on how many options you want when playing the game. If you just buy CoR then a game with anything over 3 Heroes will need to use monsters from the base set.

08-01-2013, 10:38
FYI next expansion is looking real nice!

Glauerdoom Moor is the name apparently ;)

Daft quick question, does this have options for solo play?

I was going to get it for something to paint regardless, as a nice change of pace for all my stuff covered in blood and skulls and blood and skulls and blood and bits of sick.

09-01-2013, 21:30
No solo play rules as yet Damien, I would have thought it might be possible to integrate your own AI into it given a little time however, a lot of games I own have quite effective solo play rules

My girlfriend liked them enough to get a set! :D

Started painting up the Von Drakk expansion, first few finished...slow work....waaaaaaay too warm here!

These IMHO are some of the best sculpts yet...super cute!

The evil little tinkers so far, there are 36 miniatures in total for this expansion including 2 separately available boss minis and 4 huge 16 bit creatures included in the main expansion, plenty of new treasure cards too.

06-07-2013, 22:38
Yes - these are fantastic - and the speed at which you seem to get them done... I'm just working on getting started with Roxxor!

Speaking of which - can I ask, do you remember how you painted the turtle shells on your Rocktop gang? I really love how they turned out.

08-07-2013, 09:25
Hi Schmapdi, will have a dig around, see if I noted the colours mate ;)

Few more from the new release finished...

How are you so fast!?

I hope you get to play with these guys. Such fantastic work shouldn't go to waste.

15-10-2013, 11:45
Do you have every model they released? I noticed there isnt any picture of Nyan Nyan or have I missed that?

Im looking to pick up the whole lot of these soon.

17-10-2013, 07:49
I think I have all the commercially available figures skeletal, also the candy cola metal hero but don't have nyan nyan, she was limited as far as I know and goes for silly prices which I ain't willing to pay!

Not specifically for SDE but I intend to make up cards for all the Impact miniatures cute chibi dungeon releases which I somehow ended up purchasing! Including the ace characters from the original cartoon series for those ancient enough to remember it!

Anyhow, made a start with the Medusa model they did (the smaller one shown), then I got to thinking being for SDE would be nice if she had a larger monster form and the late great harryhausen and his ingenious creations for the original Clash of the Titans sprang to mind. So, with a little swop n chop using parts from other impact miniatures dungeon range I created a homage to a classic! Used the giant snake base, scorpion queen body and of course the original Medusa head, she came out quite funky!

The Original Impact Mini Medusa

And the 'Monster' version I created

And just to prove its not a trick done with mirrors here they are together!

Amazing work. I love the heros...only one question. They look pretty dark, is that because of lighting in your pictures? I was wondering if you used a black primer.

I'm about to start painting my minis and I'd like the heros to be brighter than yours appear. Only wish they could look a tenth as nice when I finish with them. :-)

23-01-2014, 20:26
I do undercoat these in black but they are a lot brighter in real life mate, just my sh@tty photography skills! The main comment I get from clients is how much better things look once they receive them compared to in the pictures so I guess it ain't all that bad :p

26-01-2014, 10:48
Impact Miniatures Minotaur or 'Minitaur' as I prefer to call him, although nothing mini about him standing at 70mm tall!

Pictures really don't do this chap justice, but this little fella came out quite funky, could gobble him up every time he comes out of the case!

I just find this style of miniature and painting is sooooooo relaxing ;)

Some more Impact minis, for those of you old enough to remember chibi versions of the characters from the Iconic 80's series dungeons and dragons!

Here we have Venger, his knightmare steed, little shadow demon sidekick and of course the little big man himself Dungeon Master!

I did buy the rest of the characters so I will slap a little paint on them when I get the time, they look great btw, impact did a cracking job!

Also, King starfire landed, pleasantly surprised, nice big kit, a warning to anyone expecting a pre-assembled model however, he is a multipart resin kit so a little modelling skill is required chaps!

Here's a pic of him (great pouncing pose) next to an original SDE hero Starfire, King Starfire stands 150mm tall, looking forward to slapping a bit o paint on him :)

You did an awesome job! I'm really impressed on how you blended the colors. Do you have tips for how you painted them?

28-02-2014, 13:36
Holiecow, I use the airbrush to lay down initial colours and blends then usually finish them off with the brush to strengthen the definition, its really just a matter of getting stuck in an enjoying the moment really!

King Starfire finished. Seeing as he is essentially a more powerful version of the original SDE boss I decided to stick with the same colours (and I'm lazy like that). If anyone is planning on getting him I would reco bending the tail back a little using hot water and adding a little weight to the base (I used an old metal monster base I found) as he is a little front heavy stock

King Starfire compared to the original SDE Dragon and a hero figure

Awesome! Now if they only got to Forgotten King already! Seems they are doing a lot more with that expansion than only a few new miniatures though...

03-03-2014, 19:58
Really scythe? That certainly sounds interesting, be nice to see some new content rather than 'just' new minis. Any inside info on what we might expect in the box other than the minis then?

04-03-2014, 06:47
I don't know more than the press release honestly, which can be found here:

But in short: new tiles (finally! Hopefully, there will be some usable with Von Drakk as well), new rules system, new units. And a complete game in the box, which should be nice drawing in new players!

04-03-2014, 18:07
Oh my, that certainly does look promising!!!

i might even sculpt a few new boards to tie in with those new tile sets! Guess I better start saving the pennies up, sounds like it will be £60+ Damage to the old wallet!

Just had a kickstarter update email with some painted Forgotten King images by Minx Studios...pretty impressive!

They went for a very realistic style which came out very well. I would say my preference is for the more cartoony/game look.

07-06-2015, 09:01
I agree Quoth, as beautiful as they are I will be trying to hit the more cartoony look of my existing collection....if I EVER get the time to paint the damn things!

Not wanting to hijack your thread but I thought I would post a picture of my set. It's taken me ages to complete (just finished!) but this thread is what inspired me and dragged me off the fence in deciding whether I should get SDE!

Just ALL of the expansions and Forgotten King to go.

No quite to your exacting standard but here they are!

They're going to be the death of me...

22-10-2015, 10:37
I know, I'm all in, and with only 1 paid for expansion for this KS it's just really the initial pledge not all those pesky add ons.

Some great looking stuff already on the KS for BulldogUK to paint.

22-10-2015, 18:40
WHY! WHY DO I NEED MORE MINIATURES....is what I screamed as I pressed the 'legendary' pledge button....<facepalm>

Good man!!!!! :)

I'm in at Legendary too :)

Some of those 1st Ed Character resculpts are wonderful, although I love the new Deeproot Druid sculpt I'm not sure about the Angry Bear which was probably my favourite character.

I'll be back in December 2016 to see your pledge fully painted mate :)

...may have to sell that box of Warmaster blisters, not because I want to but because zero-alpha may need some justification/concession.

Nevermind that I'm going to have to master the laws of space and time a) to find space for it all b) to find time to paint it!!!
