Alright! We got submissions last month from everyone who also had something the month before, plus two new ones. I hope that happens again this month. I still have high hopes for the original enlistees that haven't shown up, and also newly enlisted (with the brand new board games :D).

Welcome to the Tale of Board Game Painters

What's it all about?
A lot of us wargamers have bought or been given some really impressive board games through the years that have had one extra special selling point; cool miniature game pieces. Mine (and my brother's) include Hero Quest, Space Crusade, Blood Bowl, Space Hulk (both editions) and most recently Chaos in the Old World.

When we opened the boxes we all dreamed of how awesome it would look (in just a few weeks, right?) when we'd have painted every single miniature to the best of our abilities. Awesome atmospheric board pieces with super realistic miniatures all over. Then a few weeks go by, sometimes a few months and for way too many of us a few years. The games are still awesome but all that paint seems to have taken the wrong turn at Albuquerque.

Enter the Tale of Board Game Painters. Now we're going to use the collective power of motivation to really get it done! Participants choose a miniature board game from their collection - one's enough for most of us; after all, they've been unpainted this long already, let's not get carried away :D - and paint it up in 5 to 10 batches over a period of 6 to 12 months.

At the end of each month (or the beginning of the next actually) we take photos of the month's good work, post it on that month's show off thread and give comments and encourage our fellow painters to keep on truckin'!!

More detailed description of the time plan and structure can be found in the OP of the signup thread here! (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=313544)

Here are our painters at the moment:

Please let me know if you feel any of the info is wrong or if I've misinterpreted how/when you're painting the games.

Board games finished: 3
#1: steevn - Utopia - 5 miniatures
#2: robscott5598 - Fury of Dracula - 5 miniatures
#3: steevn - Lady and the Muskateers - 6 miniatures

In this thread we start by posting last month's painting, our batches of finished miniatures. Include info on what the miniatures are and what portion of the whole game we feel we've finished. Then we comment on each others good work and begin posting WIPs of our next batch.

Don't forget you can still sign up anytime!

Happy Painting!

Here's my months stuff;

Hope to see everyone's elses stuff :)

EDIT: You must have ninja'd me Robscott, your stuff wasn't there just now! It looks really good, I've not heard of the game before - is it based on Helldorado? It kinda has that vibe. The scouts look excellent too, I especially like the grass effect on the bases, I struggle to get realistic looking grass tufts, what's your secret?

01-12-2011, 19:54
Yes Claustrophobia is based in the Helldarado world.

It is an excellent game, great atmospheric vibe, beautifully sculpted figures and amazing quality modular boards. The figures come prepainted rather simply but very clean and quality work, I just felt the need to improve them and to give the duplicate figures of the Heavies and the Blades something to differentiate them.

But for straight out of the box ther'e quite nice still. I think it's the best board game currently available for the price tag it carries, especially since you can get it off Ebay or Amazon for around $40 or less, and it's easily as nice a quality as Space Hulk 3rd edition.

Also the game designer, Croc, publishes many expansion rules and scenarios on his website for free, and answers any questions/rules clarifications directly.

Game play wise it's also quite a challange with some enique rules for both sides. I can't possibly recommend it highly enough.

My grass clumps are just Static Grass glued down and then you blow on it to get it to stand up via static electricity, hence "Static" grass.

And your Genestealers look great. I dread having to do the old school blue and purple once I get around to mine but yours look excellent, especially how well the subtle grays of the bases make them really stand out. Fantastic job.

Sadly fell short of my plan cause of real life, pics and comments soon.

02-12-2011, 23:36
Nothing from me this month. I got started on the 3 Terminators, but then Necrons appeared and well... yeah. Hasn't helped that work has been really busy and stressful, so it's cut into my painting time even more.
Here's hoping December yields better results (Although, again not sure! Since I'm going away for a week).

Good stuff guys. Hope to see some more though :D and I'll save commets till after the 7th.

I finished Tzeentch this month.

The bottom photos are just to show the overall design on the icons and glows under the hoods.

I also fixed up little stuff that wasn't perfect on Khorne and Nurgle, icons on nurgle, glow inside hoods on Khorne cultists and second pass of flat red and black on Khorne bases. These three factions are now complete!

So this is what it looks like so far:

Sorry, real life came in the way last month. I promise to do better!
So I only finished my DeathWing:

Comments next weekend!

Here’s the second batch of Heroquest models. To refresh everyone's memory, this batch includes:

1 Orc, 2 Skeletons, 2 Goblins, 1 Chaos Warrior, 1 Zombie, 2 door bases, 1 Table, and 1 Throne.

On to the pictures!

Group Shot! (With a cheeky gobbo blocking his comrade out of the shot.)

Zombie and Skeletons

Chaos Warrior. I wanted to theme each of the 4 Warriors to one of the 4 chaos gods, and the first is dedicated to Nurgle.

Edit: I've attached a picture of the newly painted furniture as well.

Comments, and hopefully a kick to rouse this thread from its slumber!

@robscott5988 Really well-done scouts. I remember painting those models way back when I started playing 40k (and they were relatively new). Really great, detailed figs. Looks like you had a busy month, all told.

@Daemonslave I’m really impressed with your careful brushwork. Did you use snakebite leather for the highlighting on the terminator? It’s very effective. Not sure how I feel about the genestealers guts, blood, and skin all being the same pink color, though. Although I feel like I’m tugging on superman’s cape criticizing anything about your work.

@steevn Really nice job on the cadwallion minis, but I have to say, what really made me say “wow” were the bases on the musketeers models. Really, really top notch work.

@Solun Decius Your ability with bright colors leaves me speechless. They all look great, and on such small figures it is all the more impressive. I can’t wait to see what you have in store for Slaanesh.

@DAGabriel Great conversion work on the Deathwing sergeant. I like your use of what looks like a cool white instead of a warmer bone color, as well.

Yes, this thread needed reviving and we need a reminder to paint this month's batches. I always think holiday vacation will leave me with a bunch of time to paint but it usually ends up having more chores than free time, so we'd better use the last weeks before wisely, eh?

@robscott5598: Very nice scouts!
Now, I'm not sure how many minis there are in Claustrophobia. Are there more, or are you done with that game as well?

@Daemonslave: As usual, very nicely done.

@steevn: Excellent cadwallion. Those figures are very characterful and fun. The basing is very nice, both this month's and last.

@DAGabriel: The Deathwing sergeant is excellent, too bad you didn't get around to the stealers. You'll get a "painted this month" marker still, and hopefully be rather quick to do a double batch of stealers next time, eh?

@iamjack: Woo! Heroquest! The zombie's a bit green, but with a purple wash it could be really sick. Either way, I'm cool with green zombies as long as you keep painting up your Heroquest. Good stuff!
Also, thanks for the nice comments, and for bringing this thread to life and reminding us to get cracking with next month's painting.

WIP Slaanesh!

18-12-2011, 19:18
Oops, I failed miserably this month, but I have a great start on next time instead.

Everything is looking good, and it's especially nice to see all the non Space Hulk projects are going strong.

@ all: sorry, am without computer this moment. Great work all.
@ Solun Decius: am working on a triple batch!

21-12-2011, 22:53
Hey guys,
Unfortunately I think I am going to have to pull out. My painting desk has not been used much in the past month and a half (Well... I did paint some Necrons... but not much) and I haven't been able to get much painting done during my lunch breaks. Work has been pretty tough lately, and doesn't seem to be letting up anytime soon (in fact, January is going to be even more miserable).
So sadly at this time, I am going to have to pull out of the Tale of Board Game Painters.

Good luck to those remaining. Hope all goes well and you get lovely board game sets painted during the Tale.

@ someone2040 : feel free to jump back in when you get the time !

i really see great stuff here, i begin to fear i'll not make it for this month, my dark elf corsairs get my attention atm for a local campaign
i'll try to sneak in 5 cadwallion models anyhow

I really like the progress of the participants of this tale. I keep wondering about how many different games there are that I didn't know of. The painting is very good also.
Good luck everyone and hopefully we'll have lots of painting time next year!

With only a few spare days this month, here is my contribution.
Better late than never :-)

I've assembled 2 full squads of 10 space marines. Imperial Fists and Space Wolves. I've added the crux terminus to all their shoulderpads.

The Imperial Fists have the grills on their backs and the Space Wolves cloaks hides the holes in the back of these models.
I used wolfcloak from the goblin wolfrider sprue as pelts for the Space Wolves.

The flamers have extended barrels.

The captain for the Imperial Fists is the old classic terminator captain. I replaced the powersword with a new and larger one. My model missed the grenade launcher so i made one from a storm bolter. Same goes for the Space Wolves captain. What I really want to do with the captain models is to give them a transparant helmet. It's so unrealistic to see them running around without any form of protection for their face. I tried so called transparant clay that's used for necklaces and such. No succes, as this clay is not transparant at all. So I'm always looking for a solution for this problem and one fine day I'll bump into a transparant piece of glass or something that will fit the captains armour.

Still some greenstuff work to do, for instance the armour shape of modern models will be shaped in the way the first edition space hulk plastics are.

Happy new year people! The new thread is up right here: http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=328564

Very nice Morglum Necksnapper! You made it just in time for the progress sheet update.
I'm not removing any painters just yet and I hope you can get back to your set of Space Hulk someone2040, but I guess next month will see a shorter progress sheet if some participants don't show up soon...

I myself have made a change, where I've removed Dreadfleet for the time being as I won't be painting that as regularly as I thought, and I'll just put those updates on the Tale of Dreadfleet Painters. Instead I've added my superawesome Juletide gift from my wife, Super Dungeon Explore. I'll even have an update ready for this month's thread.

Now get over to that new thread and start-a-postin'.
