View Full Version : Unit size for Empire Knights

Hi All

What is an effective size for a unit of Empire Knights?

I ask for two reasons:
1. They are significantly cheaper than Chaos Knight from my Khorne Army so feel I should be able to field more than 5.
2. I like to model pretty movement trays so don't want to have make one, then have to make another.

I have 15 models and was thinking either 3 ranks of 5 Knights or 2 ranks of 6 Knights?

I have an all Kislevite (empire knight) army. I tend to run 2 units of 10 and one unit of 14 + a templar grand master

40 knights with full command and a magic banner is approximately 1000 points...

With a 2+/1+ save you could probably get away with 30-35 - still ~800pts though. And still wasting some 20-25 horse attacks (and everybody knows the horses always do better than the riders :p).

I often field a unit of 20 with a character (3x7). Means i can hit hard and cancel ranks even after suffering 9 casualties when the opportunity arises.

I hear alot of folks have success with small supporting units of 6ish though.

I usually try to find room for a big unit of knights in my Empire armies these days. I don't have have any Great Weapon variants though, so I've never had the pleasure of seeing how they perform in a grind.

I'll be buying more knights if GW finds it in their hearts to make new ones... Perhaps GWs on them, then.

for me 12+ models in main units and 6 models in support, but i'm in the process of building 30 GW core horde for big fights, in smaller setups i find 15 of them quite a nut to crack for my opponent :D

I mostly field them in support roles. A unit of 8 to 10 knights, often with a character, to charge in the flank of anyone who contacts my infantry. Usually one swift charge sends them running, but they can't hold up for long grinds if you use lances. I have three units of knights (8 strong, 10 strong, 5 strong, with the 8 strong using lances and the other two using great hammers). Which unit(s) I field depends on what mood I'm in, the makeup of the rest of my army, etc. I have a large number of Empire models painted up over the years, so I get to vary it up each time!
