I'm building a Skaven army of which, the core is units of 40 clanrats. What is the optimum amount of ranks? I should point out that while I am not a newcomer to the game, I've probably only played about 6 games since 7th edition was released so I'm extremely rusty so any help is appreciated.

I run my night goblins in units of at least 45, when fielded deep. Fielding them in horde I'm always looking at a minimum of 70. Depending on point level I scale them up from here, but these are sort of the minimum sizes they will always be, provided its 1500+.

Skaven are probably very similar in pointcosts and power, so I'd say you are looking at the same amount of numbers. So 9x5, or 7x10

8x5 is a pretty solid formation for 40 Clanrats, whether in column or line. The temptation to Horde in such a small unit should be resisted! You won't have enough ranks to pull it off. That is, of course, unless you've armed them with spears and are using them defensively. 10x4 with spears can all fight if they're not going anywhere, so is a viable tactic.

On the offence, though, 4 units of 40 in 5x8 is a fairly solid core. Two of those units used in conjunction will probably fare better than a single, larger, unit; more durable, keeps more ranks for longer.

Depending on what, exactly, your army composition is, really...

Thanks for the advice, I had already built an 8x5 and a 10x4 movement tray so I'll probably build another 2 the same and use the 10x4 for the spear units and the 8x5 for hw&s.

I know a guy who runs 13x13, with a bell and a bunch of characters in it...

I would go 60 like I do with my night goblins 10 wide 6 deep

That's what I do, personally; my small units of 40 are just there to block flanks. My "core" would feel ashamed to field units with a mere 40 Clanrats in, but that's what the OP was asking about...:p

Skaven units should be 10 deep and 10 wide. Try to take multiples. 6 units of slaves in this formation is good(sic).

Hmmm, do you fancy buying and painting 600 clanrats for me?
