The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 6 (Feb painting and Mar WIP)

This is the thread where you post what you painted in February.

Please post nothing else for 1 week, and then after the first week of Mar please feel free to comment on the work of others.

Mission Statement:

It is the goal of The Tale of Fantasy Painters, and all Tales for that matter, to help fellow gamers paint their armies by providing them a place to find support and encouragement.

The Tale:

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months.

The way it works is that painting would begin in September and then in the first day or two of October a thread will be put up where you can post what you had done in September (this trend will continue for 12 months). You can include as much information as you wish, but some good things to include along with the picture are: the units, the total points for that month, conversions, highs and lows, plans for next month, and a number between 1 and 6. The number is important because it has to do with feedback.

A week after the initial thread is created you can then (and are encouraged to) add feedback on the work of others. Due to the large number of people who take part in these tales it is suggested that you only comment on those that have the same number as you. Of course if there are ones that really catch your eye, or you are a trooper and want to comment on them all, that is obviously awesome.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.
(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end ... it's harder than you think!)

Men and Boys:

Because this is harder than you would think ... As last year rather than try and hold everyone to 200 points a month I have decided to allow folks to join in and paint only 100 points a month. Whilst the goal for many remains getting a 2000 point army painted in a year the original and ongoing intention of this whole thing was to encourage and support folks to get stuff painted and 1000 points is better than no points! As a result we have two categories. 'Men' (painting 200 points/month) and 'Boys' (painting 100 points/month).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q : When can I join in? Does it have to be at the start or can it be any time?
A : Join in any time.

Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes, but if you can do this time after time then you can probably commit to more. Feel free to sign up multiple times to reflect the amount of work you plan to do (for example sign up for Beastmen X2 and submit 400 points a month, or Beastmen Men + Boy submit 300 points a month).

Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example if you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : What do I do when I'm done and the tale isn't over?
A : First thing to do is to include an army shot (everyone loves an army shot) and then it's up to you. Either stay on and paint a model now and then to take part, or start planning for the next tale. If you are really cocky then you can sign up for ANOTHER army is see if you can blitz it in time.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. We love background stuff. Write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

Q : Can I *insert something here that results in more painting*?
A : A thousand times yes!!!

Q : Can Doi drop out?
A : No he can't.

Q: Can other people drop out?
A: It's up to Doi.

The Tale So Far:

29-02-2012, 20:03
I think you are one day early Malorian...^^ But I'll post my work nonetheless :-)

Army : orcs and goblins (boyz category)

Units : 5 orc warriors (30 pts) + 5 black orcs (60 pts) + 1 rock lobba (85 pts) = 175 pts (599 pts/1200 pts)

Dice roll : 5

Highs : the model count raising up :-) Painting the lobba was a nice change, and I really enjoyed repainting the crew (took me two days).

Lows : painting the black orcs was quite long and less enjoyable than the first time. I haven't done the weathering on the armour, got lazy, but I'm quite satisfied with the armour so far. Maybe I'll add the weathering later, but for now they can be considered finished.

Still to do : improving the banner pole of the black orc standard bearer, and as usual varnishing and adding grass to the bases.
You'll find a couple more pics in my blogs (link in my signature)

And the tale so far (oops, I forgot to put the 2 shamans in the picture) :

I don't have a fancy camera at my disposal this month, so the pic is a bit funny.

Army : Wood Elves, Men's Category

Units : One Treeman from the Rare category for 285

Point So Far: 1815

Dice roll : 3

Still to do : At some point, I'm going to have to assemble and paint the remaining thirty Glade Guard, which is a bit rougher than doing the Eagles and such that I really want to paint.

Great horned owl

1000 points high elves

Backgroud: this army defends the forest Kingdom of Avelorn.

Unit: 14 swordmasters (the 15th will be Eltharion the Grim).
Swordmasters are the famous defenders of the high elf mages and their white tower of Hoeth in Saphery.
In my universe there once was a smaller white tower in Avelorn.
This has been destroyed during the wars between the high elves and the dark elves.
This made the remaining swordmasters of Avelorn even more determined to defend their Kingdom and to get rid of their enemies.

Conversions: The top of the standard and the banner are converted.
My brother made the green stuff image on the banner.

Painting: the cloth, leather and metals are painted in the same way as my other units. Each unit has two spot colours.
I didn’t want to use dark blue as the dominant colour, that is the colour of the swordmasters of Saphery, not Avelorn. That is why I used orange with blue gems.

Basing: Micro art temple bases.

Still to do: varnishing and maybe a freehand design on the cloak.

High: finished.
Low (but also funny): I was painting the wrong standard bearer.

Owl said: “Why is this standard bearer wearing different armour?”
Owl frowned and looked at the unpainted horde on the desk.
Owl then discovered the swordmaster standard bearer cowering behind the spearmen to hide his broken standard ……
No, no, owl did not curse. Parrots curse, owls make shrieking sounds.

Points: half in December/half this month = 106

Diceroll: 5

ARMY: Dark Elves

UNIT: 1 Highborn on Cold One and 10 Repeater Crossbowmen

BUILD/CONVERSION: The Crossbowmen are built from Corsair legs and regular torsos and arms with a mix of Corsair heads and heads from Dark Eldar Wyches.

HIGHS & LOWS: The Highborn has so many little casting problems on him you could believe he's Finecast. And the Crossbowmen were a lot more work than I expected.

STILL TO DO: The original plan was to give the Crossbowmen's armour purple highlights like I did with the hydra's handlers. I will do that at some point.

POINTS: 300 (-ish; I don't have my armybook at hand currently.)

TOTAL POINTS: 1215 (which means I get my second Joker back, woohoo!)

02-03-2012, 19:35
ARMY: Orcs & Goblins

UNIT: 1 forest goblin big boss on gigantic spider.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight from the box.

HIGHS & LOWS: Fun to paint the spider in al the bright colours.

02-03-2012, 19:40
ARMY: Dwarves - 2000pts (MEN)

UNIT: 3 Stonethrowers + BB 2012 forum mini (Lord)

BACKGROUND/THEME: A Hold of Dwarves living in the far north of the world, in a region under the terrible influence of Chaos. Led by the ancient and dwindling Purplebeard family, they fight to survive against the unending tide of Chaos. Many Gnomes live and fight alongside them too.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Foundry stonethrowers x3 (new kits, unmodified), plus BB 2012 forum miniature (Lord).

STILL TO DO: Nothing.
HIGHS & LOWS: High - finishing some artillery

POINTS: 200 + 1/2*270 = 335
TOTAL POINTS SO FAR : 1215 + 200 +1/2*270 = 1550

DICE ROLL : 6, but I'll try and comment on as many entries as I can!

Stone throwers and a Dwarven commander.

The Bugman's Brewers here finally received their flock when I did the stone throwers.

Dwarf Lord

The stonethrowers/grudgethrowers are finally finished. They were a lot of fun to do. The bases are 60mm square, and the Rangers are included in the pics to give a sense of scale. I definitely want to get more artillery done, but I'm not sure what to do next. I have a gyrocopter, but I just can't get over the idea of having the Dwarves with stonethrowers, gyrocopters, and cannons in the same army at the same time. Maybe I'll go for wheeled medieval bombards for the cannons. I want to find to find a really beefy-looking model, so if you know of one, please let me know. The forum mini was a bit of a rush job. I might tidy him up later on.

As I have stated from the outset, my aim with these Dwarves this year hasn't been to create a functional army (did that last year :D ), but rather to finish stuff from my collection. However, I do think some footsloggers would be useful, so I'll make an effort to get some Quarrelers, Slayers, and the Hammerer command group done.

02-03-2012, 19:59
ARMY: Imperial Dwarves (Empire proxy) - 2000pts (MEN)

UNIT: 8 Knights (Pony riders) including Command

BACKGROUND/THEME: A merry band of mercenary Dwarves. They fight, brawl, drink and swindle their way across the Empire, and often inspire more fear and worry in the villages and towns they 'protect' then the dark beasties who prey upon the lands of the Empire. They are led by the eccentric Lord Purplebeard, a strange Dwarf who loves fashion and rambling on about 'legendary' family ties, being a dispossessed Prince (supposedly) and his 'lost family fortune'. Many doubt his tall tales, but he has proven himself on the field of battle.

BUILD/CONVERSION: WK Minis (WK Miniature Imperium)

STILL TO DO: Nothing.
HIGHS & LOWS: High - finishing something!

POINTS: 22*8 + 50 = 226
TOTAL POINTS SO FAR : 226 Please ignore the previous numbers.

DICE ROLL : 6, but I'll try and comment on as many entries as I can!

Pony Riders! I haven't converted the musician yet.

Only 7 are pictured. The other guy went off for a trot.

The small Imperial Dwarf force

The infantry guys above were painted before TOFP 2011-12 so they are not counting towards my total for this year. I wasn't fully happy with them so I toned down the garish colour schemes a bit when I did the cavalry.

Next up, I plan to do at least one cannon. I've also started some Thunderers/Handgunners. I'll be able to catch up on the points by doing a cavalry-heavy, artillery-heavy, character-heavy force.

As for my Chaos and Gnome armies, I plan to update you in the next few days :)

Put me back in Coach...

Sign me up in the Mens bracket

Army: Chaos Dwarfs

Theme: Quasi-mystical babylonian near-east theme. (i.e not the standard western-style paint jobs)
Besides, my spartans need persians to fight......

Kitbashed Bull centaurs

2500 more points in 5 months? can we do it???

Zark's Averland Dogs of War expansion Month 6

Roll: 4

Hireling Wizard Lord [Life]
Hireling Wizard [Light]
Hireling Wizard on Warhorse [Celestial]
Lorenzo Lupo

Points: 175 + 65 + 79 + 275 = 594pts

Total: 2084 + 594 = 2678pts

Broke out with some characters this month, mainly to practice speed painting (also because I was busy with other stuff).

All standard GW figures apart from Treegar the Druid, who is a Reaper figure.

I have also gotten around to adding names to my previous characters, but not my Regiments (yet)

As promised, some army shots. First up, the collection of everything painted for this year's Tale:

And a shot including everything painted for the army so far - overall some 5000pts ish.

Doomscape's Dwarves - Nuffle's Irregulars

Unit - 19 Bugman's Rangers, and Bugman himself!

Points - 331 total

Roll - 5

Highs - More metal dwarves! I've been working on some plastic units of great weapons and crossbows as well, but figured they're not quite done enough this time 'round.

Lows - None to speak of.

04-03-2012, 15:52
Doomscape's Demons

Unit - 3 bloodcrushers of Khorne

Points - 210

Highs - These are actually rather nice plastic models, I was surprised (picked up six secondhand, they were in pretty decent shape).

Lows - I'm sort of tired of bloodletters at this point. Maybe time to move on to more horrors.

04-03-2012, 15:56
Doomscape's Tomb King Debacle

Unit - 32 archers with full command, necrotect

Points - 272

Conversions - Finecast is my enemy, so I converted up the necrotect out of chariot, tomb guard, and archer parts. It's pretty simple but I think it turned out well.

Highs - The blue came out pretty well. This is a tough army to paint.

Lows - Little known fact, but I can't feel my fingertips almost at all, so these little guys tend to snap :( I'm going to have to run a Monster Mash just to protect them from me!

Army: The High House of Chains, 2400pts of Druchii
Monthly Target: 240pts
This Months Total: 432pts
Jokers Used: 0

Completed: 6 Black Guard (78pts), Cold One Chariot (100pts), Dread Lady w/Chill Blade, Glittering Scales, Other Tricksters Shard and Opal Amulet (254pts)

Background: Crewed by veterans of the Household Cavalry, the fearsome Nauglir Chariots once again take their rightful place alongside the spears of the House of Chains after Malekith wisely rescinds his ban on their use. The Serpents Kiss, Lady Nymeria Valys also leaves the bed chambers and pleasure-dens of the Obsidian Tower and brings her vast Alchemical knowledge to the House of Chains. Accompanied by her fearsome and devoted Wardens, her presence alongside Velrys Arkitaine has raised concerns and eyebrows amongst the noble Druchii of Clar Karond.

Conversion work: Same again for the remaining Wardens and Nymeria is a simple conversion of the Dark Eldar Llhamean. The chariot is based on the Lion Chariot, with CoK Nauglir and crew converted from CoK and Warrior plastics with a few pieces from the High Elf chariot crew.

Highs: Nymeria and the Wardens look great, easily one of my favourite units in the army. I'm also very happy with how the chariot turned out, more so with finally getting a Nauglir scheme sorted that looks good.

Lows: One of the censers is a little crooked and two Wardens are wearing the same helm. That irritates me immensely as I was trying so hard to make sure they each had a different helm.

Next months WiP: The second chariot and Hiroth Arkitaine, the BsB and Seneschal of High House Chains.

Dice Roll: 5.

And the pics.....

Lady Nymeria Valys

The completed unit of Obsidian Wardens

The chariot, Khaines Fist

Cheers everyone :)

Army : High Elves
Bacground: A detachment of High Elves in Lustria.

Category : Boyz

Points so far: 468

February's painting :
7 Seaguard with Shields – 91 points

TOTAL : 559/1000 pts

DICE ROLL : 5 (But I'll try to post comments for everyone)

HIGHS : Finally Finishing. These are really highly detailed, and so finishing always seems another highlight away. But I love the models, so its rewarding to get them finished.

LOWS : Taking two months to finish them. I’ll hopefully be able to do a little better this month. Not getting the basing done yet, but I think I finally know what I’m looking for.

NEXT TO DO : Undecided yet, I might do another couple Seaguard, and I’m deciding between some Shadow Warriors and a Tiranoc Chariot.

Army: Dawi Zarr of Zarr Dareis
Monthly Target: 100pts
This Months Total: 50pts

A WIP of the first ten Hobgoblins with Handweapon and shield, still to do are the eyes and the metal parts but thought better a WIP than nothing.

Conversion work: Only some scenic bases and a new standard.

Highs: Starting a new army is so much fun!

Lows: Still not sure about the color scheme.

Next month: finishing these and more of them.

Dice Roll: 3

I'm working on modifying my Glade Guard to have actual bow strings and notched arrows for next month. Here's a picture of what the finished product looks like. Hopefully, I can also get some painting done!

ok before i do my entry malorian the main table needs changing as all my ogres and chaos are now one army therefore i havent played any chaos jokers and the ogres are not finished. It should simply be 3xmens chaos alliance that will include both my ogres and beastmen/warriors for the alliance. Sorry for any confusion but please change that as 12 jokers i havent used is insane! I dread to think what my alliance army total is so far!

heres this months entry which totals 1624 points

i enjoyed painting the firebelly and jabberslythe the most but im finding my enthusiasm for beastmen again!. Managed to get quite abit done this month so its another big entry from me! I bought an ogre battalion 3 boxes of mournfangs and bragg so they will show up soon. Also glued an ironblaster this month,my first of many!

think the jabberslythe is missing something maybe going to add some markings to it. Also the firebellys skin needs another wash and the picture is terrible as his loincloth is green, his gutplate is brass and silver and his facemask is brass but the photo doesnt show them. I might also tattoo him and nurgle him up abit and change the hair colour on the severed heads on his belt.

firebelly level 2 155 points

Malagor 350 points
beastlord h armour sheild gnarled hide ramhorn helm 184 points
sorcerer bray shaman level 4 shard of herdstone 285 points

30 ungor with ful command 165 points

15 bestigor full command 210 points

jabberslythe 275 points

my total for this month is 1624 points! next month i will probably start my unit of chaos hunter themed maneaters and maybe a few more minotaurs or any of this lot

06-03-2012, 00:16
Hey everyone,

So I kinda dropped off the face of the tale after month 3! Life got preaty busy preaty fast but Ive just about managed to keep up with the tale and im finally here to show my (limited) progress, first post is for month 5's work then month 6 will follow.

Dice Roll : 5
Background : Middenhiem

Units : Warrior Priest - 96, 6 Swordsmen - 36

Build/Conversion : The Warrior Priest is the old priest with 2 hand weopons. After doing some preaty shoddy work on him a long time ago i set about saving this model. Swapped his right hand for a white wolf hammer, left hand the same sheild which runs throughout the army and then gave him a white wolf cloak with a little extra detail added. The swordsmen ive posted about quite a few times now :)

Painting : Same blue and white theme through the army. Whats new this time is the wolf cloak, added a little tallern flesh to the grey for the wolfs head dont know if im 100% happy with the effect though :eyebrows:.

Still to do : Basecoated 5 halflings but never got past the wash, they are still awaiting attention...

Highs : Priest came out well, was particularly happy that I had managed to rescue him from a bad state to a nice condition.

Lows : Ive lost all interest in painting the halflings, lead to a low total for the month.

Points : 132 (722 total)

Next Month : Next Post!

06-03-2012, 00:43
So on with this months work!

Dice Roll : 2
Background : Middenhiem

Units : Wizard Lord - 210

Build/Conversion : Straight out of the wizard box, actually ive just remembered I changed the staff head, think it came from the corpse cart origionally.

Painting : I decided to try sumthing new this month. I went with a realy simple Adeptus Battlegrey with wash and highlights for the cloak (90% of the model :)), onto that I added a green lightling effect coming from the staff's flames.

Still to do : Havent added any snow to his base, seemed like a waste of effort for one model, will do that with this months batch.

Highs : This was my first attempt at painting source lighting and im very pleased with the effect (the pictures dont quite do it justice as usual).

Lows : Painted a single model this month for my empire...is a bit of a cop-out as i didnt spend that much longer on him than i would on most rank and file.

Points : 210 (932 total)

Next Month : Will try and get lots of state troops done in time for new possible new goodies in April??

06-03-2012, 14:54
Army : Savage Orcs

Category : Men

February's painting :
5 boar boys and ten savage orcs with command!

TOTAL : 205

DICE ROLL : 3 (But I'll try to post comments for everyone)

HIGHS : Skin and woad was fun. I liked painting the boars as well.

LOWS : I got over confident on the boars and slipped a bit on the savages as far as time.

NEXT TO DO : One more shaman and ten more savage orcs!

BTW sorry im late! Also the chart is wrong im listed as 590 twice. January should be 590 points and Febuary will be 205! Thanks! Sorry for the confusion!

06-03-2012, 15:54
ok before i do my entry malorian the main table needs changing as all my ogres and chaos are now one army therefore i havent played any chaos jokers and the ogres are not finished.

Braad is the master of the table.

06-03-2012, 22:15
ARMY: The Sons of the Mountain, 2000 point Ogre Kingdoms Army

UNIT: Curs’d Ettin (counts as a giant)

HIGHS: Wasn’t convinced by the skin halfway through and was tempted to start over, but I decided to carry on and I’m pleased I did. Think it fits in alongside the yhettes blue fur without looking the same. Lovely model, but a bit bland in terms of details so I decided to jazz it up with a few bits from the ogre range to tie it into the rest of the army and add some colour.

LOWS: None really.

NEXT MONTH: Fenrisian wolf sabretusks.

06-03-2012, 23:15
Army: DoC (Boys)
Unit: 3 more Flamers
Points: 105
Points total: 507 (1 Joker)
Dice roll: 1

Afraid i will have to use my first joker. Have some WIP but no crappy excuses. Life just caught up with me in Febuary.

Please can you tell braad to correct my entry in the table
:-) thanks

08-03-2012, 02:54
Sadly it is another Joker for my Ogres :(. I'll have double points or more done this month though with some characters. If I can pull myself away from the Thundertusk I'm converting for long enough anyway...

Nothing for my Dark Elves either this month but I'm ahead so no Joker.

08-03-2012, 04:46
Hey everyone, first I want to say sorry for not posting anything at all in the last two months of the Tale (real life has a way of getting in the way of these things). Secondly I want to say that I have managed to get an entry done for this month but am currently without access to a decent camera so pictures will have to wait for another couple of days. Finally I have to say that everything I see this month looks fantastic (I'll do full comments when I post pictures of my stuff).

09-03-2012, 14:22
I'm playing the joker in alternative form. You'd expect me to post pictures of Tomb Kings but I got distracted by the look of the finishline for my HE army and the temptations of the Dark Gods:

Hey guys and gals,
what happenz? Comments for only 1 Page???? But some especially nice pics this month!

Page 1

@ azhagmorglum: Nice, clean and crisp painting, love them.
@ Tekore: Don`t really like the model, but the painting is nice. Re archers: can you tell me why all these GW Minis take the bow into the wrong right hand? Looks good with string and arrow.
@ Great horned owl: Love the standard bearer story! Nice painting again.
@ EmperorNorton: Painting gets better and better, only the skull at the jaw of the cold one looks unfinished.
@ Braad: Cool painting, but one point even if it is a matter of taste: The legs of the spider look like wood, the line between yellow and brown seems too sharp which isn’t lifelike.
The one in the last pic is a little bit better;-)
@ Purplebeard: Cool work, they are looking great.
@ Shandowner: WIPs are looking great even if the destroyer isn`t my taste.
@ Zark the Damned: What an army, that group shots a phenomenal.
@ doomscape: Great work on the small ones, I toast them with a beer! Don`t really like the green horns on the demons, but that is more a matter of taste, painting is nice.
The TK skeletons look coolwith a very glowing blue.
@ JackDaw: Whow, that chariot is breathtaking. May I dare to suggest something? With a little more work on the photographic side I think you can win more than with more painting.
@ iamjack42: Really nice, but as you said, the basing is sorely missed.
@ colonel kane trine: First of all. Love the new quality of pics! Sooo much better to see. That lead belcher is an awfully cool model, you make me want to paint one myself. The other ones are … a real lot of minis. Don`t really like the Beasts, but you did a good job with them.
@ z4carlo: Good to see you back, like those Middenheimers. The wizard is not to my taste, but the globe looks cool.

Page 2

@ Loki73: Love those greenskins, nice painting. Only the bases could need a little more love.
@ grhino: Nice WIPs even when they aren`t egyptian.

09-03-2012, 22:11
Righty, time for some comments.

Page 1
AzhagMorglum - as ever, I love your Orcs. That brown note to the skin makes a world of difference, its such a great natural looking finish.
Tekore - great job on what is not the best GW mini in the world. The little spots of colour here and there are a good touch.
Great Horned Owl - very nice clean finish on your Asur, very nice indeed. Those bases really work with the minis and sets them off nicely.
Emperor Norton - great basing, great conversions on the crossbows, looking forward to seeing more of your Dark Elves, I'm so glad you've got your inspiration back for them.
Braad - it's a great model and I think you've done it justice, it's very close to the source pic.
Purplebeard - I think I mentioned last month how great that Dwarf Noble was, but I'll say it again - he's ace. The gnomes though...ah those gnomes. They make me happy in a way only tattooed redheads usually do. I think its the moustaches.
Shandowner - looking forward to seeing more of these, if your Elves were anything to go by we are in for a treat.
Zark the Damned - nice selection of characters, great to see a painted Lorenzo Lupo again.
Doomscape - ah that Bugmans unit brings back a lot of memories for me. Great job. I'm still not entirely sold on the green daemon horns, but I can't fault the finish on the red or the brass. Looks like a good start to your Tomb Kings as well.
iamJack42 - really like those seaguard, staying away from blue as the trim colour was a brave choice and it's paid off.
DAGabriel - classic models and the paintjob is great. Those wicker shields look perfect on them and the standard is very nice.
CKT - again an impressive output, the beasts are looking pretty good.
Z4carlo - good to see you back on here, you've got a really nice finish to your Empire that I want to see more of. In particular, that priest shows nicely that conversions don't always need to be big to make an impact.

Page 2
Z4Carlo - this mage looks awesome and proves the point I made about your priest - a simple conversion and a quality paintjob wins every time. The OSL looks great, especially for your first attempt. I'll be honest, it's something I'm hesitant of trying myself so kudos to you.
Loki73 - really like the contrast between the skin and the warpaint, the skin is a tiny bit too cartoony for my own taste but thats a personal thing - I can't fault your skill or the finish you achieved.
Laborious - round of applause sir, this looks great. That pallid grey skin is ace, very unsettling.
Gargobot - quality work as always. I think your style is almost the complete opposite to mine and that's why I like it so much.
Grhino - good looking Phoenix Guard, I'd love to get a closer look at that standard. Thats a big ole' chunk of chaos as well, looking forward to seeing the result.

And a quick reply to DAGabriel - cheers for the kind words mate. I know what you mean about the pics, but sadly with a 7 month son I don't have the space or cash spare for a proper lighting box etc or the time for fiddling the pics on a pc. I'm fairly lucky that my phone has such a decent cam on it.

Looking forward to seeing more from everyone over the month. In terms of WiP, here's a little sneak pic of what's on my workbench:

ok before i do my entry malorian the main table needs changing as all my ogres and chaos are now one army therefore i havent played any chaos jokers and the ogres are not finished. It should simply be 3xmens chaos alliance that will include both my ogres and beastmen/warriors for the alliance. Sorry for any confusion but please change that as 12 jokers i havent used is insane! I dread to think what my alliance army total is so far!

heres this months entry which totals 1624 points

Why complain about jokers if you paint 1624 points a month? As you say, you're not done on those armies, and what's in the table is not about what you have done now, but what you plan to finish.

So if you plan to finish 6000 points of ogres and 6000 points of chaos by the end of the tale, this is what the table is supposed to look like at this moment. Otherwise I have to keep on adding and removing armies, and the table is already enough work as it is.
If you plan to end with less than 6000 ogres + 6000 chaos in september, please tell me and I change it. It's about the goal here, not about the the way we get there.
If in the end 2 armies of 1 person are still short in points, I always merge them, so no worries about that.

By the way, after this month it's only 6 jokers, so you already caught up half.

Afraid i will have to use my first joker. Have some WIP but no crappy excuses. Life just caught up with me in Febuary.

As far as I know you are ahead, so no need of jokers.

I plan on painting a minimum of 6000 points in total of mixed beasts and ogres. Not 6k ogres and 6k chaos.
If you just change my table entry to 3xmens chaos ogres it will sort the problem.
I only mentioned jokers as so far I havent used one at all. I have submitted painting every month and im proud of that fact. So to see jokers all over the place was something I wanted to mention.
When you update the table for next month please just make it 3xmens chaos ogres not 3 ogres and 3 chaos.
I wont want it changing again and im sorry if it seemed I messed you about.

Sorry guys going to have to play my 1st joker for my Frost Ogres this month.

Been painting 30+ guardsmen for a up coming campaign

A Joker for me too chaps, almost finished, but I don't want to rush it, so I'll give myself some breathing space.

The Muster of Quenelles
1,000 points (Boys)

I've moved down to the Boys League and have changed some of the points value of my previous posts as such:

Month 1: 10xBowmen, Musician, Braziers: 70 pts
Month 2: 10xBowmen, Musician, Braziers: 70 pts
Month 3: Lvl 4 Prophetess, Prayer Icon of Quenelles: 250 pts
Month 4 & 5: Joker

MONTH 6 POINTS: 15 pts

UNIT: 3 Peasant Men-at-Arms, without shields (and hands!!): 15 points.

BACKGROUND/THEME: The standing army of the Dukedom of Quenelles. Proud blue and noble white for my army's colours, with sustaining green as an accent color. Being in the shadow of Athel Loren, I want to play with a connection to Elves-- although nothing explicit like conversions or count as models. I will do this by keeping my palette reminiscent of HE and WE armies and keeping a "clean" look throughout.

BUILD/CONVERSION: The Men-at-Arms are straight out of the box. I have not yet finished their shields, and will add them for next month.

PAINTING: Used the same colour recipes used on my other peasant units.

BASING: Sand painted with Graveyard Earth, drybrushed Fortress Grey, washed with Scorched Brown. Glued Static Grass in clumps to finish it off.

STILL TO DO: Paint and attach their shields (and arms!!).

HIGHS: Finally getting the time to pick up a paintbrush!!! I've been so delayed with this project due to workload. Hope I can manage better with a 100 pts target per month.

LOWS: Super busy with work so painting hours were few and far between.

Month 6 Pictures:

Cheers everyone!!

Man, time needs to put on the brakes!!! I've been painting here and there, but not near enough to keep up.. for last month I did post a 160ish point character though.. even though it was the end of the month.. I'll tally up everything I have to make sure it's accurate and see if I can't finish these 3 boars on my desk at the moment. kudos to everyone else!!!

Ok I guess it is comment time ^^

@ Tekore: that treeman great, though I'm not keen on the sculpt, your painting made it cool. The blue eyes are a nice touch, and the superb base complements the model thematically

@ Great horned owl : those swordmasters are really nice. I like the colour scheme and the bases are a good choice too. Sorry you painted the wrong standard bearer. By the way, did you sculpt that tower and sword on it yourself ? Nice !

@ Emperor Norton : good job for this month. I like the noble and his cold one, though I think the claws could do with a bit more work, maybe some washes ? The crossbowman are nice conversions, good idea you did the chief differently.

@ Braad : I think I already commented on your spider in your log, but I'll say again here, this is a great paintjob you did on it. Though a bit strange to look upon closely, but from a distance the result is surely wonderful and rather true to your inspirational picture. I'm not fan of completely green bases, but at least they are finished (not like mine). Keep it up, I can't to see your arachnarok !

@ purplebeard : gorgeous dwarves, with all those small details you managed to paint. The stonethrowers though not GW, are cool as well. The flocking is a nice touch. Something I should do on my models I guess.
I'm really keen on the lord's blue beard. Great paintjob on this one !

Imperial dwarves : they are comical, in a good sense. As usual your work is superb. I don't think I commented of the first regiment in the last picture (the warrior); well, they are great, I like the use of multiple colours for the uniforms.

@ Shandowner : yes, a chaos dwarfs follower. Seems like you posted only wips pictures. Where does the K'daii model come from? The bullcentaurs conversions are rather too big for my taste (compared to the original model), but nicely converted. Can't wait to see all that painted up !

@ Zark the damned : great bunch of characters. You said you speed painted them, I think the elf could do with a bit more shadowing (you could add some washes in the recesses). The Lorenzo guy is good, you even painted his eyes :-) And thanks for the army shot, it is something some people often forget, but I always find them great to show your progress.

@ doomscape : classic metal dwarves are always great. Your rendition of those ranger is certainly good too.

The bloodcrushers are cool too, I like the bronze juggernauts.
The skellies archers are nice, the blue bows are cool details. Your necrotect conversion is efficient, though I think it looks too much like a skeleton to my taste. But I understand your aversion for finecast. Too bad since the necrotect model is quite nice IMO.

@ Jackdaw : as usual you don't disappoint with your updates. The dread lady is my favourite this month, even though the chariot conversion is very well done.

@ Iamjack42 : great seaguards, with a solid and unusual colour scheme I must say. It's a nice change from the blue scheme. Keep it up !

@ DAgabriel : those hobgoblins are superb. I've already seen the base somewhere on an online shop, it's good to see it painted. I'm following your plog on the chaos dwarfs forum also. Great work, keep it up !

@ colonel kane trine : the painting machine is back. Nice update. And it's the first finecast jabberslythe I see painted. Seems like it is not very popular. Was it easy to work with ? (assembling, painting)

@ z4carlo : those empire men are really nicely painted, with great contrasts and all. The shields are great. Can't wait to see more.
The wizard is cool too, I like what you did with the orb. The lighting effect is quite nice, maybe it needs a bit more "sharpening" ?

Page 2

@ Loki73 : your savage orcs are just amazing ! the skin is really good and the blue tatoos well done and placed.

@ Laborious : your version of ettin is one of the best I've seen so far. It is not my favourite model, too simple and disproportionate (though that might be intentional).

@ Gargobot : flamers are good and superbly painted. How about an army shot to spice up your post ? ^^

@ grhino : so no entry this month ? Anyway, your HE are great !!

@ Saulot : bretonnians are a rare sight around here. Yours are very pleasant to look at. Great painting, keep it up !

Answer to comments :

@ DAgabriel : Thanks man, I'll try to entertain you for some more months ^^

@ Jackdaw : your comment makes me happy, I'm very proud having found this recipe, since it pleases not only me but everyone else as well. Your wips for march look promising, nice use of the nightbringer model.

Comment time!

Page 1
AzhagMorglum : Amazing quality of work, man!! Your O&G are vibrant yet muted at the same time, I love your palette!!

Tekore : Great job on that mini! And as usual, your basing is just perfect for the Woodies.

Great Horned Owl : Great job on the custom banner detail! I like your bases and your unique paint scheme as well.

Emperor Norton : I like how your painting is so crisp! Your Highborn looks menacing! And great conversion work on the RXBmen. Positively full of character!

Braad : Nice spider. I like the colours that you used! And thanks for putting up the tables every month. ^_^

Purplebeard : Your battery of stonethrowers look menacing! And all those classic Dwarfs are just so lovely to look at! Your Imperial army is adorable, as always. hahaha

Shandowner : Oooooh... Interesting minis! Can't wait to see more.

Zark the Damned : Nice characters! And awesome job with the army shot! Very inspirational!

Doomscape : WOW! That's a lot of minis painted in one month! Anyway, great job on all of these guys!! I just love the way a finished Dwarf regiment looks! So short and
stumpy, and covered in hair and armour! LOL Nice bronze Juggies too! And your TK archers look good with the bright blue bows.

JackDaw : The Dread Lady is so freaking scary!!! Amazing job! Her all black dress is perfect! And those Black Guards are so well converted! I love how you set the mood for everything just by the little addition of bits (Censers!! White Lion Chariot!!). More, kind sir, more.

iamJack42 : I'm such a fan of unusual colour schemes that work. Yours definitely fit in this category! Great job!!

DAGabriel : Ooooh.. Nice classic models! The base is pretty amazing too! Great job!

CKT : Amazing painting speed as usual!! I love the colours you used for your Beastmen Wizards!

Z4carlo : I feel you, man! I haven't been painting much as well! Your Empire has such a vibrant scheme to it! Keep up the great work!!

Page 2
Z4Carlo : The OSL looks great! And I just loev the muted feel for this Wizard. Deadly!

Loki73 : Nice Savage Orcs! Love how the tattoos seem to glow!

Laborious : *shudder* Creepy giant is creepy. Awesome job, you should be proud.

Gargobot : Crisp work as usual!! And I never realized those flamers have all that detail going on (all those faces!)! Amazing skill with ye olde paintbrush, sir!

Grhino : Getting distracted with a new army is always fun! LOL Great looking High Elves!

Saulot : Paint some more you lazy git!!!

Cheers everyone!!

ARMY: Mordheim Boyz Mob

UNIT: Da Boyz!

HIGHS: I've always wanted an excuse to paint up some boys, when my local started up a little mordheim league I figured it was time. Cobbling together a few of Ruglud's Iron orcs, some gobos, and a couple of squigs I hit a full mob in no time

LOWS: My camera missed half the contrast in the highlights..... In real life, the flesh color is very nicely highlighted....:(

POINTS: 500 gold crowns (I'd call it a solid 200)

(Looks like I still struggling with the new warseer format.
Can anyone tell me how to post full sized pics hosted through warseer)

12-03-2012, 19:18
@azhagmorglum Really nice orcs, very strong colors. Where is the Black orc on the extreme left in your second picture from? His face is very characterful, and reminds me of the orcs from the Lord of the Rings cartoon version. Is it just an OOP Black Orc?

@Tekore Love the treeman. The base is really phenomenal, it looks like Spring!

@Great horned owl Great job on the Swordmaster. I like the vibrant reds and the creamy robes.

@EmperorNorton I really like the Highborn, especially the metals on the cold one. The painting is very neat on the crossbowmen, but the pictures make them look a little flat.

@Braad Great job on the Goblin Big Boss. The spider is nicely done and suitably creepy.

@Purplebeard Great job, as usual. The stonethrowers look great, I particularly like the ropes. The Imperial Dwarves are coming along well too.

@Shandowner I love the greens and blues on the test mini. Looking forward to seeing your completed minis.

@Zark the Damned Nice work this month, the army as a whole is quite impressive.

@doomscape I like the dwarves a lot. I worry the armor blends into the bases, however. The bronze bloodcrushers are fantastic, and I think the green on the bloodletters works very well. The Tomb Kings are great, the vibrant blue is so striking!

@JackDaw Excellent work, as usual. I’m a little afraid I’m missing some depth to the color because of the lighting. Is it just me?

@DAGabriel I like the hobgoblins so far. They look quite wicked and unpleasant.

@colonel kane trine I approve wholeheartedly of the bigger, clearer picture. The fire on the Firebelly is nicely done, and I like the green on the beatmen.

@z4carlo Glad you’re back. I’ve always liked the blue and white color scheme you’ve chosen, and I’m quite impressed with the OSL on the wizard, particularly considering your disclaimer about how much time he took.

@Loki73 The boars look phenomenal. The Savage Orcs are really suited to the shade of green you’ve chosen, too.

@Laborious The Giant is nicely done, I like how you’ve added some knick knacks to draw the eye.

@gargobot Good job as always. Your colors are so smooth and strong!

@grhino I am very impressed with this month’s work. It’s all very strong. I particularly like the color scheme for the eagle, and I think it’s very well executed.

@Saulot Great wrk on the men at arms, particularly like the leather. Really lifelike.

@Confessor_Atol I really like those Orcs. The checks in particular are just perfectly painted. Regarding the pics, I just use urls from my photobucket account using [IMG] tags on either side. Seems to work fine for me.

12-03-2012, 19:53
I plan on painting a minimum of 6000 points in total of mixed beasts and ogres. Not 6k ogres and 6k chaos.
If you just change my table entry to 3xmens chaos ogres it will sort the problem.
I only mentioned jokers as so far I havent used one at all. I have submitted painting every month and im proud of that fact. So to see jokers all over the place was something I wanted to mention.
When you update the table for next month please just make it 3xmens chaos ogres not 3 ogres and 3 chaos.
I wont want it changing again and im sorry if it seemed I messed you about.

No, that's just fine, just wanted to make sure that we both know what the other wants here. I changed it to 3x chaos ogres. However, if I get the numbers right, that means you finished them, as the total I have here already exceeds 6000. Is that correct?

Sorry guys going to have to play my 1st joker for my Frost Ogres this month.

As far as I know you are ahead, so no need for jokers.

Apart from that... I'm nearly done with 5 chaos hounds for someone elses army, and in the mean time I'm painting up an orc battle standard bearer based on a blood bowl star player. Hopefully I get to buy a joker back at the end of the month.

12-03-2012, 20:08
@ Iamjack42 : the odd black orc is a metal black orc body, combined with a metal boss head from when the plastic orc box came out first (around 2000 if I'm not mistaken). At that time the plastic regiments had a blister in the box with metal parts to do the command group.
This conversion was inspired by another member on warseer, I think it's HiDeke.

Thanks for commenting on my work

Really enjoying the tale and seeing so much getting done by everyone

@azhagmorglum-Love your orks! the skin is perfect! how did you paint the red on those black orcs? The army shot is looking great too
@Tekore-that treeman model is looking cool is it lots of different browns with washes?
@great horned owl-that banner is awesome! like the high elves bases alot and the red is looking nice
@emperornorton-that lord on cold one is awesome love the model and the scheme you have gone for! the converted crossbowmen are great and its nice to see dark eldar parts fitting so well with fntasy
@braad- liking that scheme its very unique and well done.id rough up the edges abit between the colours like the photo of the spider. The parts between the sections of the leg colourings arent perfectly straight.
@purplebeard-love those stonethrowers they are a nice find! I like that lord too its very characterful and well painted. The pony riders are nice too very nostalgic and old style
@shandowner-like the test scheme and the skin colour! where is that huge destroyer thing from? the bull centaurs are greatbet they were expensive to make though!
@zark the damned-really nice selection of wizards there! love the lorenzo and old brettonian sorceress! Im definately a fan of those army shots!
@doomscape-dwarfs-great old models painted very well. I love those classic rangers and i love your painting of them!

@doomscape-tomb kings-love the blue on those and that necrotect is a nice conversion!
@jackdaw-love every single update that you have done for this army! i love your army scheme and the great conversions! That lhamean looks great and fits perfect as a dark elf character! The obsidian wardens are looking great as a unit and lve the conversions. The chariot is awesome and those cold ones are perfect! How did you paint them? can you guess that i like your army alot? :P
@iamjack42-like the lustria theme ive never seen high elves done like that! very unique and well thought out scheme
@DAGabriel-love those hobgoblins the new shields definately suit them! be good to see the completed
@Tekore-cant wait to see those completed! A full unit of those will be amazing!
@z4carlo-love the priest looks way better with the shield instead of the 2nd hand weapon! How did you do the blue on his robes? i really like it! The swordsmen are looking really good id like to see a unit of those all ranked up! Probably one of my favourite empire schemes ever! The wizard is great too how did you do those grey robes? Im rubbish at painting robes and the schemes you have done are exactly what im wanting to do!
@loki73-Those savages are looking damn good! perfect green skin and nice boars! How did you do the blue warpaint?
@laborious-nice looking model you have there! how was the blue skin painted?
@gargobot-nice looking flamers i like the purple on the main body of them! looking good!
@grhino-those elves look beautiful! and looking forward to seeing the chaos units painted will we see them in the tale? how is the manticore as a kit to assemble and stuff?
@saulot-nice looking men at arms there! very clean and neat looking
@confessor_Atol-those orcs are awesome! is ruglud the guy with the 2 swords? i love that model dont thing ive ever seen it before! very nice painting nice and dark! perfect for mordheim!

Replies to replies
@azhagmorglum-the jabberslythe is an amazing model easy to assemble and work with! I have heard alot of slagging off of finecast but my experience of it has been nothing but perfect! I was dubious abot buying a box where i couldnt see into the box at the parts but once home and opened my fears were quelled! it was great to assemble and easy to paint. Needed a tiny bit of greenstuffing though
@braad-thankyou for sorting that out for me and sorry for the confusion! I am carrying on with the chaos ogres even though im past 6k so ill aim for 10k.. how many points have i actually done so far and how many months do we have left? ill stick to doing at least 600 points
a month until the tale ends.I will hopefully go past 10k so ill say that its my goal

13-03-2012, 02:00
Dawi : 2000 POINTS (MEN)

UNIT: 20 Rangers with Full command & a Master Engineer.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Minimal conversion, these are the current plastic crossbowdwarves, with a BfSP thunderer standard with the pistols chopped off. Now I have no idea where the master engineer is from, or if he's even a GW fig.

PAINTING: For the metal, chainmail, with a badab black wash then a chainmail drybrush, For the skin, Tallern flesh with an ogryn flesh wash and a dwarf flesh drybrush. The gold was gryphonne sepia over chainmail and the same yellow as the rest of my throng.

BASING: Was done the same as the rest of the Dawi.

STILL TO DO: Nothing.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Not really any highs or lows this time round. Although I would like to know where that engineer mini comes from, so if anyone has any idea I'd be grateful if you could enlighten me.

Master Engineer:

Army so far:

Next month: I’m not sure, maybe some Hammerers.

13-03-2012, 02:01
Lizardmen : 2000 POINTS (Men)

UNIT: Skink Priest

BUILD/CONVERSION: No conversion at all.

PAINTING: The skin is the same as my other skinks. I noticed I've forgotten to do the claws teeth and eyes too :( Oh well next month I'll have them done. Gold is gryphonne sepia over chainmail. And the cloak is a few different colours and I gave it a light drybrush of white as well.

BASING: Sand, painted black with a heavy vermin brown drybrush.

STILL TO DO: Just the base.

HIGHS AND LOWS: I really like this mini, infact the lustria skinks are some of my favourite minis around.

Priest front:

Priest Back:

Army so far:

Next month: I should really make a start on my Saurus regiments, or maybe temple guard. But I'll probably do another skink priest because I'm lazy.

13-03-2012, 18:22

Darn... I got different points in the table than you just mentioned. Care to help me out?

13-03-2012, 22:26
Sorry mate! :D My fault, I worked from an old copy of my template and didn't double check the point costs!

I've re-done it using your table, which I have the utmost confidence in, unlike my memory ;)

You can write Me off Braad. Sadly life is going to swallow up all time for me many months ahead, probably rest of the year. Will check in here from time to time!

Time for comments;

Page 1
azhagmorglum - nice work, the colours look realy nice and clean. love the the wood on the stone thrower too.
Tekore - I like that treeman model, looks lithe and dangerous rather than avoidably slow!
Great horned owl - that swordmaster champion was one of the first models I ever painted, brings back memories! youve done them realy nicely, as allways love the bases.
EmperorNorton - love the noble, the purple red and green of the cold one realy go together well.
Braad - I think the model is great and youve done it realy nicely but have to agree with some others in that the stripes on the legs are a little too clean, they dont look natural.
Purplebeard - great use of minatures again, that lords stance is very powerful and imposing, good find.
Shandowner - wow those bull centaurs are brilliant, I would never have thought to combine those 2 kits.
Zark the Damned - great selection of minatures there, the army as a whole looks wonderful.
doomscape - bugman and his rangers are wonderful models, had them a long time ago, seeing yours makes me so wish I still did :( making me genuinely sad here haha! I absolutely love the blue on the khemri it realy pops out.
JackDaw - so clean and crisp as allways, and as usual realy origonal conversions the censer staff/halberds are a realy nice touch.
iamjack42 - realy like that bronze metallic youve achieved looks realy natural and worn.
DAGabriel - what a great unit, never seen hobgoblins done that well before.
colonel kane trine - an impressive months haul, that beastlord is another of my favourite models. looks like you still have pleanty to get done as nearly all of us do!

Page 2 and 3
Loki73 - just wow, ive allways wanted to do a savage orc (and goblin :) ) army and this is exactly how it looks in my dreams!
Labourious - as best as I can tell from the picture that ettin's skin has been flawlessly blended realy great stuff!
Gargobot - wonderful bold colours that realy bring out the details of the models
grhino - the pictures are a little grainy but the griffon looks realy great I love the while/brown contrast on the feathers and the way you have achived it on the neck.
Saulot - a megre but beautifully done addition to your force, all the colours look to be blended so well.
Confessor_Atol - those dags are realy well done as are all the colours.
perplexiti - great additions the colours you have used for the skinks feather cloak are just perfect, and I would love to know were you got the engineer from too, was about to ask when I realised you didnt know!

And replies;
@ colonel kane trine - the two colours you asked about are both realy easy, they are just Mordian Blue and Adeptus Battle grey basecoat followed by a heavy wash of Badab then brought back up to the basecoat colour with the addition of a little of my spit ( not to be too crude ;) ) to help blend it in as best as possible. Thats it...
Will get a pic of the swordsmen unit up next month possibly a whole army shot too if there is space on my overcrowded painting table!

generally just glad to be back, the comments realy do help to keep me motivated thanks everyone and keep up the good work!

17-03-2012, 08:38
Sorry to hear that Kaos.

17-03-2012, 08:57
@perplexiti: The Engineer is an '80s figure - he came in a set with a Tinman (yes, like the one from Wizard of Oz). Later on, GW put him in the Engineers/Miners range.
You have a lot of footsloggers done btw - you are putting me to shame!

Anyway, I'll post comments nad updates later on today.

17-03-2012, 19:06

Thank you o wise longbeard! It's great to know where he's from, and he's officially my oldest mini now! And thanks man, there's still a regiment of hammerers to come as well.

17-03-2012, 20:54
@perplexiti: Haha. I'm not exactly a 'wise longbeard' yet. All the info about this stuff is on solegends.com and stunties.com. Hammerers are always good; I look forward to them.

WIP Stuff:

I've been busy this month. Having managed to get hold of some bases, I have finally mounted up a load of the Imperial Dwarves:

Imperial Dwarf group shot

Some oldies finally based up. These aren't counting towards my points as they were painted pre-Tale. <sigh>

Spear unit

Handgunners (yes - the champion and musician will be repainted!)

Sword-Dwarfs. Lots of them.

Because I'm proxying Empire with these guys, I'm going to have to get them ALL finished. And some more artillery, and characters. Squishy humans are cheap, cheap, cheap in Warhammer. I wouldn't mind but my painting speed is slow. <groan>

On the plus side, WK's figures are a lot of fun to paint, and I have made a decent start already. I'm going to aim to get the Handgunners and Cannon done first, then the ponies, and then the rest. This lot should keep me busy for a fair while.

17-03-2012, 21:01
Little Extra WIP update:

I've also done been working on a couple of figures for the Dwarf army. I've held back a bit because I'm ahead on these guys but behind on everything else (Chaos, Imperial Dwarves, Gnomes).

Couple of characters

Bugman/Ranger Champion

I have finally gotten around to getting Bugman painted, so that I can complete my Ranger unit. The device on the banner is a button, with a tiny plastic shield (with the obligatory 'B') stuck in the middle. The other fella is an Engineer. Both need a bit more work - Bugman is a bit rough atm.

@azhagmorglum: Lovely skin tone again on these guys, and the stonethrower looks great. I do think the armour of the Black Orcs could use some chipping and weathering etc. very bright and clean ATM. Not too much, mind!

@tekore: Wonderful treeman. clever use of two shades on the bark and nicely blended together.

@Great horned owl: Fantastic looking unit. The banner looks great (probably all that practice you got on the first one! ;))

@emperor norton: Sorry about your finecast problems :( The end product looks great though, and the crossbowman kitbash works wonderfully.

@Braad: Hehe, i love it! Except for the last picture!

@purplebeard: Great work. The models themselves look great and fit in really well, and the paintjob, as usual, is excellent. Your pony riders are officially the cutest models ever. :P

@shandowner: What a fantastic idea for Bull centaurs, brilliant conversions. Can't wait to see some paint on them. :)

@zark the damned: Good work. I especially like Lorenzo, one of my favourite of the old DOW models. Army shoot looks epic! :)

@doomscape: Nice work on some wonderfully characterful old dwarven models. The bloodcrushers look great, really nicely weathered brass. I'm liking that bright blue on the tombkings, contrasts nicely with the bone.

@Jackdaw: Simply beautiful (dread lady). The cloak is brilliantly layered and that hair is superb. The other units are all fantastic as well, particularly the cold ones.

@iamjack: Nicely done. the jewels are particularly well done.

@DAGabriel: My favourite unit of the tale so far! :) Love the colour palette you've chosen, and that is the best movement tray EVER! :P

@colonel kane trine: impressive output, as usual - that's a scary amount of ungors! :)

@z4carlo: Brilliant conversion and paintjob.

Page 2:

z4carlo: Nice OSL.

@loki: cracking boarboyz, how did you do the flesh on their snouts?

@gargobot: great flamers. But i thought it was horrors that were supposed to multiply? :)

@grhino: I love those phoenix guard, but how many marauders is that?!

@saulot: quality not quantity. Lovely as usual. :)

Page 3:

@confessor Atol: Oooh, I'd forgotten they even made old Ruglud. Really nice weathering on his sword and armour.

@perplexti: Nice work, i love that engineer model. I don't think he's GW though, anyone recognise him? Loving the priests cloak.

Thanks for your comments guys. The skin started of with a base layer of Vallejo model colour Pale blue, washed with Asurman blue and then I just spent the next few painting sessions gradually reapplying pale blue with increasing amounts of ivory mixed in before washing the whole thing with a wash of asurman blue/leviathan purple and devlan mud to tie it all together. Think it was about 6 or 7 layers all told.

18-03-2012, 17:47
@Purplebeard, I forgot about that site. Great idea with that button BTW, Well my hammerers have no actual hammerer models, they're all pretty much warrior minis from a variety of GW kits and I think it's Drong from that old campaign pack, the one with the two-handed hammer over his head anyway.

19-03-2012, 08:06
@grhino: I love those phoenix guard, but how many marauders is that?!

It's 50 of them... Now working on getting my TK spearmen to 50 as well, and getting another three Ushabti done. Might actually be able to add them to this month's achievements...

Been doing some painting tonight and it looks as if I may actually make this month's points... Ushabti and those 25 spear skellies are nearly done. Pictures coming up tomorrow morning probably!

20-03-2012, 08:52
So, in the end I was able to finish enough TK's in time...

Tomb King: 2000 POINTS (Men)

UNIT: Ushabti and skellie spears expansion

BACKGROUND/THEME: the Apophis: holy, mythical snake from ancient times. Most venomous!

BUILD/CONVERSION: No conversion at all.

PAINTING: I hate painting skellies

HIGHS AND LOWS: I really like the fact that I can now field both units in large blocks. Happy I went thought the pain with the last unit expansion to paint all additional shields. This really speeded things up now. And it will in the future as well!

POINTS THIS MONTH: 150+150=300

TOTAL POINTS: 1230+300 = 1530.

Those ushabti are awesome and its cool to see such a big unit of skeletons!
I share your pain though as I must have painted 200 of them for my army!

20-03-2012, 12:51
AZhagmorglum - Oh, they’re lovely! What a nice way to start this month’s projects  I really like the orc flesh up top, how’d you do that? And I’m such a sucker for that old orc catapult, have several myself.

Tekore Wonderful work on the base – I’m painting up some treemen currently, I’ll keep this as a reference (if you don’t mind!) – your stuff is turning out really, really well.

Greathornedowl – Hah, I’ve done the same with some of my models, painted the wrong ones for the Tale and then looked askance at my unpainted figs – the red and gold is turning out really well, looking forward to an army shot here!

Emperornorton – Splendid work making them feel dark and gritty, like dark elves should! Loving the character model too, he’s an old favorite of mine even if I never can remember his name.

Braad - Oh, Braad – was that model difficult to put together? I’ve always wanted one and yours looks absolutely corkin’ – love how it looks like a real spider, the yellow’s a touch of genius.

Purplebeard – Well that is a horrifying sight – three catapults ready to stomp my orcs and gobos to bits! Loving the beard on the commander, yet another color combination I have to try, late at night, furtively painting dwarf models and hoping Purplebeard isn’t staring in from outside at me, illuminated by a sudden lightning flash… I have a dwarf bear cavalry member painted up for next month’s Tale also, love what you’re doing with the ponies!

Shandowner – I like those ogre/juggernaut conversions so much that I think I may have to try it myself. Er. Hope that’s ok with you, they’re simply inspired! Go go go for 2500!

Zarkthedamned Much applause to you man, that’s a brilliant piece of work and you should be very proud! Hope to see it across the field from me someday  Have to say Lorenzo Lupo is one of my favorites and you’ve done him justice.

Jackdaw – Wow, they all turned out very well, didn’t they? Loving the dread lady (Tyrion’s going to have to try and have a go when I’m next across the pond!) and the cold ones on the chariot especially – I think I can see how you did them and I’m going to give it a try when I get the chance next. Love the executioners as well, the conversion really is inspired.

iamjack42 – Some of the most intricate LSG I’ve ever seen – love the ivy on the spears and the highlights on the cloth. Hope to see more of them down the road – rooting for you to hit the 1000 points!!

dagabriel – Wonderful work as always DA, I’m a bit worried that the base makes the whole thing too busy – looking forward to seeing more of the Chaos Dwarf army from you!

Tekore – The elf looks great – I can’t imagine putting the strings on though! My fingers are crap at that sort of work.

colonel kane trine – Yeesh, you sure can paint quickly can’t you! Like the ungors the best but everything looks good – though I agree the Jabberslythe might need something else. It’s a bit too light.

zforcarlo – Some excellent swordsmen, the old round shields just can’t be beat. I really like the muted blue.

page 2

zforcarlo Wizard looks great – love the green on the crystal ball but I might lighten the color of the beard a bit, it blends in with the robes right now – but that may be the camera?

Loki73 – Oh, swimming work on the savages – love the boars and the tats especial – as well as the purple-to-blue hair.

laborious – Wow, that’s a creepy looking model. Might have to pick one up myself. You’ve done fine work with the albino skin too!

Gargobot – The pink’s an interesting one, but a good one – very surreal – will have to try that myself, have 30 flamers sitting around at home.

grhino – Really like the griffon! The feathers turned out very nicely. Good luck with the chaos army!

aulot – Looks like I have to give you a hand here! Hope somebody didn’t palm the shields! I could go on! They’re looking good though mate, hope to see more in the coming months – I hear you about the workload, my hours are up to triple digits it feels like some days. *is dragged off by angry peasants*

Page 3
confessor – RUGLUDDDD – now there’s a unit that needs to make its return. Triumphant return, even. Love the black checkmarks, as always wonderful work!

perplexiti – That’s nice work with the yellow on the dwarves, not an option I’d ever considered – will have to give that a go sometime. Lizards look properly reptilian as well, nicely done!

Grhino – Wow, lots of tomb kings done there, makes me worry about doing my 30 tomb guard (everything else is in a chariot sadly!) – the ushabti look awesome with the green!

20-03-2012, 22:15
@azhagmorglum: I like the slight olive hue on your Orcs’ skin.

@Tekore: Nice basing and nice bark. The blue eyes are a bit confusing. Great work on the Glade Guard, that must be very fiddly work, but the result is fantastic.

@Great horned owl: Looking good. The bases are interesting. The banner is cool, too. Can’t wait to see Eltharion.

@Braad: The mini is cool, but did you have to post the picture of the real spider? *shudders* You did a good job capturing nature’s nastiness.

@Purplebeard: Impressive battery. I’ve never seen that forum miniature before. Wish I had one of those. The ponies look so fierce, but when I attack with cavalry it’s usually the mounts that do the most damage, so I guess that’s fitting.

@Shandowner. Those Bull Centaur conversions are awesome! And so is the K’aadi Destroyer.

@Zark the Damned: The big army shot took my breath away for a moment. Well done.

@doomscape: You are right, the blue did come out nice. And 34 models in a single months is more than respectable.

@JackDaw: The Wardens look great as a unit, very menacing.

@iamjack42: It’s really interesting to see that there are so many little differences between the models that I probably wouldn’t be able to spot on unpainted ones. I really like the way you painted the gold.

@DAGabriel: Do I see correctly that they have red noses? These models have a lot of character, can’t wait to see them finished.

@colonel kane trine: As usual an incredible amount of minis finished. What’s up with the Firebelly’s mouth? Did he burn it?

@z4carlo: Nice Warrior Priest conversion. I love the use of the lion shields. The OSL on the wizard is well done.

@Loki73: They look appropriately savage. The painted faces etc. go a long way I assume you will add some grass to the boars’ bases as well?

@Laborius: Fantastic composition with the base, the snow and the skin colour. A truly gruesome model presented perfectly.

@Gargobot: I like the flames, although I can’t really tell what colour that is.

@grhino: Best joker ever!

@Saulot: I hope you will find more time to paint, because I certainly want to see more. The leather colour is very nice.

@Confessor_Atol: That checked pattern is fantastic.

@perplexiti: I love that Skink Priest model and you have done it justice.

@ EmperorNorton: Painting gets better and better, only the skull at the jaw of the cold one looks unfinished.

You are right, the skulls are the last thing I painted and they were rushed a bit. I will take a look at them again.

Emperor Norton - great basing, great conversions on the crossbows, looking forward to seeing more of your Dark Elves, I'm so glad you've got your inspiration back for them.
For some reason I can’t seem to get into them like I did with other armies in the past, but your nice comments always help with the motivation.

@ Emperor Norton : good job for this month. I like the noble and his cold one, though I think the claws could do with a bit more work, maybe some washes ? The crossbowman are nice conversions, good idea you did the chief differently.

Valid point, I’ll see what I can do about the claws.

Emperor Norton : I like how your painting is so crisp! Your Highborn looks menacing! And great conversion work on the RXBmen. Positively full of character!
Thank you very much!

@EmperorNorton I really like the Highborn, especially the metals on the cold one. The painting is very neat on the crossbowmen, but the pictures make them look a little flat.
Thanks. The Crossbowmen’s armor isn’t completely done yet, so hopefully they’ll look less flat afterwards. The red parts could probably do with another layer, too.

@emperornorton-that lord on cold one is awesome love the model and the scheme you have gone for! the converted crossbowmen are great and its nice to see dark eldar parts fitting so well with fntasy
Thank you. The Dark Eldar parts need a little cutting or green stuffing, but overall they fit pretty well.

EmperorNorton - love the noble, the purple red and green of the cold one realy go together well.
Thank. I’m a bit surprised myself that the purple and red work together.

@emperor norton: Sorry about your finecast problems :( The end product looks great though, and the crossbowman kitbash works wonderfully.
Actually it’s a metal model, I just made a joke.

@ Emperornorton Love the base on the cavalry and nice use of DE heads!
Thank you.

Emperornorton – Splendid work making them feel dark and gritty, like dark elves should! Loving the character model too, he’s an old favorite of mine even if I never can remember his name.
Thanks. I don’t think that model has a name. Well, what I mean is that it’s not a named character, just a generic Dreadlord.

Some additional ToFP comments:

Confessor_Atol : Great looking boys! The checks are pretty sweet! Too bad about the photo quality, though.. Would have loved to see more details!

perplexiti : Another great Dwarf entry! I like your scheme, and that Engineer looks pretty good. Nice throng you have building up there!

perplexiti : Another entry! Love that you're doing Lizzies, that Skink Priest looks good! Nice colourful cloak.

grhino : Wow! Awesome looking horde!! And those Ushabti look scary! Great job, man!

Thanks to everyone who wrote a comment on my entry! I do wish I have more time and drive to paint.. I've been neglecting these guys the past weeks, but at least I'm back at them again. Next month's entry would have at least 400% more minis. LOL

Also, the leather is a mash up of Scorched Brown, Graveyard Earth, Bleached Bone, Snakebite Leather, and Gryphonne Sepia. I wish I wrote down my original recipe since I always forget it. Oh well.. leather's not always uniform, right? hehehe

Kaos : Sorry to hear that, man! You're an amazing painter and I hope you find time for the hobby soon!
Purplebeard : Always a treat to see your posts (and pics!). The Dwarfs are really coming out of the woodwork this year, and it's awesome!! LOL

Keep at it everyone! Never too late to get back on the saddle!

Awesome times a 1000 for the ushabti

Comments time:

@azhagmorglum (O&G): I love your painting. The flat, deep reds work really well ont he Black Orcs. The blood moon banner looks great too.
@Tekore (WE): Nice use of greys in addition to the usual browns. A lot of people miss the little fact that some trees have grey/greyish bark, ort greyish patches.
@Great horned owl (HE): Bright and lovely. Great use of themed bases too.
@EmperorNorton (DE): The Cold One looks fierce  I love the 2nd crossbowgirl with the twin ponytails too.
@Braad (O&G): I really like the bright and fun paintjob. Smart move using the spider pics for reference.
@Shandowner (CD): The green-and-black colour scheme will make a welcome change from the typical red-and-black and all-metal schemes. You have some lovely models their. I've seen the Lammasu before, but where is the K'Daai (?) Destroyer from?
@Zark the Damned (DoW): Wow, you have quite a mighty collection assembled there. I think that I've only painted about 10 models for this years' tale so far.
@doomscape (Dw): The brick red is an unusual but good colour choice.
@doomscape (DoC): We need more Juggernauts. Juggernauts make me happy.
@doomscape (TK): Very nicely done.
@JackDaw (DE): Fantastic chariot. The Obsidian Wardens are really something too. Your use of 40K figures and parts for making this force is really inspired. The chariot drivers look really menacing.
@iamjack42 (HE): Great. Keep uo the good work!
@DAGabriel (CD): Very creepy and mean-lloking Hobgoblins. The choice of shields, the basing, and the movement tray are brilliant.
@Tekore (WE): Lovely Glade Guard.
@colonel kane trine (OK and BoC): Excellent. Loads of quality figures there.
@z4carlo (Empire): Beautiful blue and white shields. the figures really stand out. Love the Wizard's green magic ball.
@Loki73 (O&G): Spectacular.
@Laborious (OK): Basing him on a snow-covered rock adds height and 'atmosphere' to the figure. I like the grey skin.
@Gargobot (DoC): Those Flamers look like a lot of fun! :)
@grhino (HE): Superb Phoenix Guard. The Prince on Griffon is great too.
@Saulot (Brets): Looking good.
@Confessor_Atol (O&G): The dark and grim look works very well on these Orcs. More should be painted like yours.
@perplexit (Dw): Nice horde. The yellow colour schme is a winner.
@perplexiti (Liz): The 'striped' cloak looks great.
@grhino (TK): Wow - that is a big effort. And you've kept up a good standard of painting even thougn you've rushed a bit.

Replies will come later.
Bye :)

Hey guys, just wondering if its a little bit too late to join in? I'[ve had my stuff packed in stoage for a while, and now work has settled down a bit, opefully i can get some time to paint some minitures. Would be aiming for around 1000 points, maybe more if i can get it. Ive got a hell of a lot of night gobbos to paint, so hopefully this can help me keep motivated.

23-03-2012, 00:01
It's always cool to join in.. cmon.
As for me, I've been on the fence lately about stopping the tale, BUT since I have to have this stuff painted for August, leave me in there.. I may round up a few Jokers, but I literally have a day or two to paint per month due to my schedule in school, but after school is done and summer hits, I'll have a LOT more free time and be able to buy back the jokers used.
also, Malorian, that savage ork BSB I did last month was 152 points, so if you could tally that in there. I'm going to concentrate on getting 500 points of a usable army painted and it may help motivate me a little once I do have time.
thanks guys!

23-03-2012, 19:56

@iamjack42: Thank you. The stone throwers were a lot of fun to paint. now they just need some crew....

@colonel kane trine: Yep, the guy who commissioned the pony rider figures was really inspired by all the old 80s/90s Marauder stuff and he is really into all the historical 'renaissance' stuff too. They've been a lot of fun to paint. The lord sculpt was commissioned by a group of us over on Bugman's Brewery, but I had no part in organising or designing him (just in the paying part ;) ).

@z4carlo: Cheers. It was actually commissioned by a group of us over on a.n.other forum (see comment for CKT).

@Laborious: My ponies are 'the cutest ever'?!?!?! How dare you! :) They are supposed to be mighty and FIERCE! ;)

@Loki73: Thanks. Definitely pony cav 4TW. If you think about it, they'll only be able to gallop slowly on those little legs, so by the time they get to the enemy, most of the enemy hordes will already have been splatted by the stone throwers. It couldn't have worked out better if I'd planned it :skull:

@doomscape: There are still loads of ponies to paint up! However, Dwarf bear cavalry would totally trump pony cavalry. I'm really looking forward to seeing that next month.

@EmperorNorton: Thank you. I'd be surprised if you had seen the Lord figure before to be honest - they were only released about a month ago. Also please see my comment for Loki73 :p

And, finally: @Knighta: Yep. Get involved. You can do it.

24-03-2012, 07:52
Oh, Braad – was that model difficult to put together? I’ve always wanted one and yours looks absolutely corkin’ – love how it looks like a real spider, the yellow’s a touch of genius.

Advice: lot's of pins. Otherwise, it's not that hard.

@Braad: The mini is cool, but did you have to post the picture of the real spider? *shudders* You did a good job capturing nature’s nastiness.

You don't like real spiders? Wait until you see the next... it will be for my big 'un!

As for me, I've been on the fence lately about stopping the tale, BUT since I have to have this stuff painted for August, leave me in there.. I may round up a few Jokers, but I literally have a day or two to paint per month due to my schedule in school, but after school is done and summer hits, I'll have a LOT more free time and be able to buy back the jokers used.

thanks guys!

Tallied. Am I correct then that the total of your army now stands at 806? Or did I make more errors?

As long as you post a joker once a month, you're in till the end.

WIP Updates:

I have been working on a few bits and pieces over the last week or two, and staying busy. I have some minor WIP updates for my Dwarves, Chaos, Imperial Dwarves, and Gnomes now.

Gnome Crossbowmen - nearly done.

Scale shot with modern Dwarf, C Series Dwarf, and Gnome.

These are coming along pretty well. I have a converted Cleric on pony (Warrior Priest), and a Cleric on foot (same again), to come, along with 5/6 more cavalry (knights). These should be done in the next 2-3 months. Then I will have to find things to round out the force to 1000pts - maybe some Spearmen. The difficulty is that Gnomes and C Series (early 80s pre-slotta) Dwarves don't come up for sale in any decent quantity, so I'm forced to pick them up in dribs and drabs. The scale shot shows just how small the C Series Dwarves are next to modern ones - the Dwarf is the same size as the slotta Gnome. This is why I thought that a Gnome army would be viable - as a way to use up all of those early 80s Dwarf figures.

Cockatrice - I'll use this as a SoC addition to the Warriors of Chaos.

I saw one of these painted up a few weeks ago (on here, thanks Harry), and it inspired me to paint mine. A Cockatrice can comfortably sit alongside my other Chaos stuff and will fit in well with the 'fast attack' nature of the force.

Another Imperial Dwarf.

This little fella had been given a experimental orange colour scheme. It looked a horrible mess, so I attempted to 'save' it with a slightly more conservatice red. I think it has worked reasonably well.

The final, final batch of Dwarven Rangers (finally!)

Hmm. I can't remember what I have shown you and what I haven't here. Anyway, I have my final batch of Rangers. This will take me to 2 units of 40 - one each of the 2nd and current Bugman's Rangers, each with a few alternative figures chucked in for variety. The Gyrocopter is just a fun model and should be finished soon. I have a lot of half-done stuff for the Dwarves right now - Hammerer Command, Runesmith, Engineer, Dragonslayer, Slayers, a Crossbow unit, and these guys. Getting them finished should hopefully only require a bit of effort.

Good luck to everyone. Looking forward to seeing everybody's new and WIP stuff!

I'm sure we could find a spot for a veteran of the first couple of TOFPs :p.

24-03-2012, 15:56
Well it's late but here it is. Time for some old school...

Units: manticore, 2 cockatrices, fimir

Points: 620

Highs: These were some old models that I've been sitting on for a while. It was great to have them finally done and ready to use.

Lows: Although this means my orcs are done, I'm going to have to give up on the second project. Between painting terrain for a tournament I'm hosting and warmachine stuff for a local league I just don't have time for my second part of this tale. This pains me since I should be making a good example, but it's time to stop lying to myself.

25-03-2012, 04:23
all these silly chicken cocatrice models! my my... makes me wonder if it would be cool for a random blast to the past 80's and 90's group paint log for you guys and your deep collections!

25-03-2012, 08:45
I'd like to quit doing Dark Elves and switch to 1000 points of Empire, please.

25-03-2012, 15:22
Some comments and replies (not necessarily in any particular order):

EmperorNorton: Still loving your theme, hope the switch to Empire is only for the tale and doesn't mean a cancellation of your DE corsairs. In any case: Yay Empire!
The flames on the flamers are in the same flesh tone I painted the Horrors in.
JackDaw: Lovely painting, especially the chariot is just great.
Funny you should compare our painting styles that way, cause here I've been thinking the same thing. I was just a little afraid I'd word it wrong. I wonder how an Empire army of yours might look like... :)
z4carlo: Very good work on that Ulrican Priest, conversion and painting the original model is hardly recognizable any more. And nice to have you back, can't ever have too much Empire armies. :D
azhagmorglum: I really like all the different skin tones you've got going on in your army. You managed to give the cartoony O&Gs a very real touch.
Saulot: I know it's not this month's painting, but I just have to compliment you on your work with the 5th ed Bowmen, remarkable how you made them look good. Cause the men-at-arms look nice too. ^^
iamjack42: Nice yellow-green combo, works great with the white. I think we paint leather very similarly, but just to be sure, how'd you paint the gloves?
colonel kane trine: colonel kane trine - making people look bad since fall 2011. :p But seriously, your output is amazing.
Laborious: Well apparently flamers do too. :) Very nice job on the Ettin, and good choice with the basing.
grhino: I really don't like the fact that you can now field both units in large blocks. :p Nice painting though. I also sent you PM, dunno if you noticed.
doomscape: Nice bloodcrushers, the juggernauts in particular look very good.

And thanks to all you guys who said nice things about my flamers. You're now in Tzeentch's good graces...

26-03-2012, 07:04
I’m very sorry to have taken so long to get these up (let alone the two months I just missed *hangs head in shame*) but here is my entry for the month.

ARMY – Great Hosts of Chaos: 6000 Points (3x Mens)

UNITS – 16 Chaos Warriors with additional hand weapons, 2 Chaos Knights, 2 Exalted Heroes (1 great weapon, 1 additional hand weapon), 1 Chaos Warrior with halberd and shield, 1 Chosen with great weapon and shield, 1 Beastman Gor with shield.

CONVERSION – The chaos warriors are extensively converted with different hand weapons and mutations.
STILL TO DO – Add grass to the base of the knights.

PAINTING – The halberd Warrior and the Gor were very interesting to paint as both are from the old Battlemasters game and, as such, are less detailed and “flatter” than modern minis. This fact led me to have to use lots of layers to get the level of depth that I wanted.

HIGHS AND LOWS – This has been a rather low three months for me in terms of painting as real life has interfered massively with getting anything done. However, I’ve started a campaign with some friends and so hopefully that will get me painting many miniatures again.

Exalted Hero One
Exalted Hero Two

Next month I'm hoping to add more from both the Daemons of Chaos and Beastman army books to expand fully into the Great Hosts list.

Hi guys. I’m a little behind, but I’m hoping I can still get everything completed by the first.

Here are some replies:

@DAGabriel Thanks. I’m hoping to get the basing done soon, but it’s a bit more intricate than slapping sand on a base. Hopefully next month when I’ll have a decent batch to work on together.

@JackDaw Thanks for the kind words.

@azhagmorglum Thanks!

@Saulot Thank you! I’m glad you think the alternative scheme works well.

@colonel kane trine Thank you very much!

@z4carlo Thank you. I think it’s the Devlan Mud over the basecoat that gives it the warm look.

@Laborious Thank you! The gems are the bit I could do most easily by simply following directions, my true forte.

@Loki73 Thank you!

@doomscape Thank you! I appreciate the well wishes.

@Emperor Norton Thank you very much. The models are certainly very intricate, it’s quite an ordeal to pick out all the detail.

@Purplebeard Thank you!

@Gargobot Thanks! I paint the leather by first applying a basecoat of Scorched Brown over a black undercoat. I then wash the brown with Devlan Mud, and apply a single highlight of thinned Calthan Brown. Is that how you do it?

I'd like to quit doing Dark Elves and switch to 1000 points of Empire, please.

I put your Dark Elves in the boyz section and marked it as 'done'.

Thank you, Braad.

Replies to comment :

@ DAGabriel : Thanks dude

@ Jackdaw : I'm glad you like my colour scheme. Your wips look promising

@ Saulot : Thanks

@ iamjack42 : I already answered your question but I'll repeat it here :
the odd black orc is a metal black orc body, combined with a metal boss head from when the plastic orc box came out first (around 2000 if I'm not mistaken). At that time the plastic regiments had a blister in the box with metal parts to do the command group.
This conversion was inspired by another member on warseer, I think it's HiDeke.

@ colonel kane trine : Thank you for your interest. The red is quite simple here, I haven't worked on it very much, something I'll do later when I'll find the most suitable way of doing it for me. So the base colour is mechrite red + snakebite leather (2:1). Black lining with badad black and a touch of it on the bolts.

@ z4carlo : I'm happy you like my wood painting

@ Laborious : thanks man. I know the red armour look a bit bland, but I didn't want to chip and weather it, since what I did on my first black orcs doesn't convince me anymore. When I find a more suitable way of improving it, I'll finish it.

@ Loki73 : thanks. I hope to surprise you in the next months

@ doomscape : you could find the skin recipe in my log ...but I'll write it down here for you : gretchin green, devlan mud wash (a bit heavy, you can use gryphonn or ogrynn flesh for a bit of variety). Second wash only in the recesses. gretchin green first highlight. Gretchin green+ bleached bone second highlight.

@ emperor norton : thank you, I like it too :p

@ purplebeard : funny you say that about the banner and the red armour. These parts are not quite finished, but they will do for now and thr ToFP until I find an idea to complete them.

@ Gargobot : expect more cartoony orcs in the future (as in metal figures from before 2000), but not in the near future. You can have a taste of things to come in my plog  (bis)

New comment :

@ Kaltheras : love those old chaos warriors, and your painting surely did them justice !

So now its almost the end of the month, are you guys on time or late? Personally, I'm good, I finished my march entry some time ago but it didn't round up to 100 pts, so I decided to add 2 more models to reach 104 pts !! Yeah! For those who read my plog  (ter) you should already know what I'm presenting this month, but now there are two mystery models to wait for (not that they are mind blowing). And no, it's not the wyvern (104 pts I told you :o)

Ok, so some additional comments for people I missed:

Saulot - it might only be 3 guys, but they are looking good. Looking forward to seeing more of your Brets.
Confessor Atol - very nice work, love that check pattern on the sword
Perplexti - your Dwares are coming along nicely, personally I'd add a black wash to the metal but thats just me. The skink shaman is great, the cloak is a nice splash of colour
Grhino - very nice looking TKs, the Ushabti look especially impressive
Malorian - great work on those classic monsters, real blast from the past seeing them again
Kaltheras - gotta same the same as Malorian - great to see those old minis getting some love.

Huge thanks to everyone who's commented my entries, your kind words really help keep the enthusiasm going. It's great to know that my own personal take on the Druchii and the conversions and painting style I have are hitting the spot with everyone out there - you guys are ace :)

In terms of my WiP for March, I'm actually a few days ahead of schedule, which is nice. Admittedly my entries consist of my BsB and a monster but shush. Hiroth Arkitaine, the BsB, was completed earlier on this month - if you can't wait for next months thread, he and his fluff are up in all their glory on my plog already. I'm just waiting for the last bit of basing on my Hydra proxy to dry before hitting the varnish and getting the fluff done, but here's a little sneak preview of the Fegharion and it's Karcist....

Cheers everyone :)

:shifty: ...hello, somebody still here?

I was mightily busy this month, but at last I managed to find some time to finish something! Unfortunately it is a model which will rarely see use on the battlefield, but I like the conversion nevertheless! (And no, I didn't paint the Firebelly - it still scares me!)

Army: The Stormbreaker Tribe [2000 Points Ogre Kingdoms]

Unit: Beastkiller Harak the Pig-Poker & his pack of Ice Boars

Build/Conversion: Harak was made using a Ogre Bull body, the hunter parts from the SH/TT kit, the spare Harpoon Launcher from the same kit and arrows from the Savage Orcs box. The Ice Boars were not converted, but build straight out of the Savage Boar Boyz box.

Still to do: Nothing. Until I spot anything, that is!

Highs: I'm happy that I got them done. Plus I really like both the Hunter conversion and the Boars themselves. They will be used as Sabretusks.

Lows: None, actually. Besides taking forever to find some time to paint anything...

Points: 160 (Hunter with Harpoon Launcher and Big Name: Beastkiller) + 105 (5 Ice Boars, to be used as Sabretusks) = 265
Together with the 1548 from the last months that makes a total of 1813!

Dice roll: 2

Next month: I think I'll start on the Maneaters. Dunno which one(s) yet!

Morkash, that hunter's wonderful! And I love the use of boars - the sabertusk models never really did it for me, they look a little too weedy. If you don't mind I think I'll paint up my hunter's skin similarly (he's riding a stonehorn) and call him Harak's cousin. I'll have to come up with a good name for him. Looking forward to next month from you mate!

After a three year hiatus, im back.
Nice stuff guys! Makes me want to start painting again! =)

29-03-2012, 17:51
Wow, thanks Doomscape! I think you're the first person calling one of my miniatures wonderful! :D Of course paint your hunter similarly, I'm flattered. :)

Does someone know when Malorian is going to make the march ToFP thread or why he hasn't done it yet?
