For one reason and another, and in no small part due to some of the fantastic and inspirational project logs on this forum, I find myself increasingly drawn towards Warhammer Quest. Now whilst I am blown away by some of the wonderful 3D dungeons in other project logs I just don’t have the time to get into that sort of thing right now … but one day … you have my word on it. That will be the holy grail and the final stage of my quest.

Right now I am at the very beginning of my quest.

I have cracked open my copies of Warhammer Quest, Lair of the Orc, Lord and Catacombs of Terror, skim read the rules, soaked up the glorious contents of the boxes, formed a plan, and am ready to set out on my quest ….and so … to the miniatures.

I am very fortunate to have a large selection of miniatures to go at so I will not be painting the plastic that came in the boxes but choosing some of my favourite miniatures from my collection to represent each of the required Heroes and Monsters. Given my collection this may well include a few older miniatures. :D

Here is my plan:

1) Paint something for all the Monster cards form the Warhammer Quest box set
2) Paint something for all the Monster cards from Lair of the Orc lord.
3) Paint something for all the Monster cards from Catacombs of terror.
4) Paint everything extra I need to complete all the monsters on the Level 1 table.
5) Design, make and paint my 3D Warhammer Quest dungeon.

So this is what I have done and still need to do:

Stage 1:
(2D6) 12 Bats
(2D6) 12 Rats
(2D6) 12 Spiders
6 Goblin Spearmen
6 Goblin Archers(Done some ... got others to do).
6 Orcs
6 Orc Archers
(2D6) 12 Snotlings
(2D6) 12 Skaven
(1D3) 3 Minotaurs

Stage 2:
Gorgut
Snakebooze (Orc shaman)
Gubbinz (Goblin jester)
Growler (Squig hound)
Skullbasher (Huge Orc)
3 Big ‘Uns
6 Black Orcs
3 Fanatics
4 netters
4 clubbers
2 Squig hunters
6 Cave squigs
4 Wolf riders
Bog Off the snotling

Stage 3:
Wight King on throne
Evil Necromancer
Hunchback servant
3 tomb Guards (with halberds)
9 Skeletons with hand weap’
6 Skeletons with spears
9 skeletons with bows
9 Zombies
12 ghouls
1 Carrion

Stage 4:
+6 Orcs
+6 Orcs (Bows)
6 Savage Orcs & Shaman
+6 Goblins (Spears)
+6 Goblins (Bows)
Goblin Shaman
+2 Goblin Netters
+1 Herder
9 StormVermin
8 Beastmen
3 Centaurs
3 Ogres
12 Skeletons (Spears)
+3 Skeletons (Bows)
9 Dark Elves (x-Bows)
8 Black Guard
9 Hobgoblins

Here is what I have got so far … done accidentally as part of other ongoing projects.

I did some of the Goblin spearmen:

Some wolf riders:

http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/4007/img8849m.jpg

The Dread King:

and some Tomb Guards:

http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/954/img0324fk.jpg

Some skeletons:

and some with spears:

Not much of a start.:D

Let me be the first to congratulate you on getting a Quest log started. I am definitely going to check back on you to see how you progress. As for the dungeon itself, I am sure you will find plenty of inspiration here, and I am secretly working on something that might help you with inspiration as well, but that is another thing entirely. I need to get more done as well, but hey... time is always an issue.

Anyhoo, I also sent you a PM if you still want the Elf. Let me know!

Well, that is a very good start to the thread with some wonderfully painted miniatures. The great thing about WHQ (and other games) is that it really is a hobby where you have a choice of where you want to start and your skill is certainly with the brush.

I have many miniatures as well and I think that my painting skill for miniatures is basic so I am a tad green with envy - in the nicest way possible.

I look forward to seeing future additions to this thread/blog.

Cheers!
Eboli.

Great stuff! Love the skeletons with the earth etc
Good idea doing a plog, I've had loads of help/inspiration from people on here.

Can't beat WHQ. I've had my set unpainted for years, need to get round to that.

Where are the skeletons from? I don't recognise them at all.

Horribly good painting as always Harry. For your skelies you look to have gone with brown as your shading - have you thought about and/or tried a blacker shading at all? I only ask as I have a ton of undead to paint up and was thinking of doing the blacker shading similar to the skeletons in the undead army around WD 142. Brown shading seems more Tomb King undead, but now-a-days the majority of all skeletons are brown shaded. Ramble over.

Good to see you did decide to go for it! Can't wait to see your stuff get painted. Knowing you, at the speed you paint at, you'll have finished every monster up to level 10 pretty soon!

Are you going for the nostalgia route (using older models) or treating yourself to some of the new shiny stuff - ie cockatrice, etc.

(chants) Harry, Harry, Harry!!

Wondered when you'd have a go at this, can't wait to see what the hobby machine churns out.... I'll be watching!

Must be the season as I've just started something very big that I've had on the back burners for a while, hopefully pics and a plog will follow some time next month.

All the best of luck in your quest (drinks potion of excitement +1)

Nice to see you down here in the dungeons, Harry. Love 'This Week...' plog, bit cheaty to use stuff you've already painted tho - no themed bases? Joking, of course, it all looks great, and part of the charm of Quest is that old school feel which you seem to do so well. Looking forward to seeing just which ancient things you pull out for each item on that list...

Wowsers. What a fantastic reception ...I have not even painted anything yet.:D

Thats is very kind having seen your stuff ... I am still learning. Actually my first love is terrain.

Lol, just seen you've got 9000 posts Harry. Don't really need me to tell you that doing a plog is good!:D I do have a plog over in the fantasy section. It has been a huge support in helping me get stuff painted. I am hoping this one will work the same for my Quest stuff.

Can't beat WHQ. I've had my set unpainted for years, need to get round to that.

The ones with hand weapons are sculpted by Aly Morrison for Marauder Miniatures which came under the citadel umbrella for a while.

Brown shading seems more Tomb King undead, but now-a-days the majority of all skeletons are brown shaded. Ramble over.I did my first skellies Black and then changed to brown. II found it so much less harsh. It looks a lot more natural to me. Not many true blacks in nature.

Are you going for the nostalgia route (using older models) or treating yourself to some of the new shiny stuff - ie cockatrice, etc.Well as it happens I had a day off today and made a cracking start.

I have cleane up based and undercoated the Bats, the rats, the spiders were already half done but I made a start on there bases, the snotlings ... two different lots of snotlings as it happens, the squigs ... and the skeleton archers and I dug out some old friends for my heroes. I even got some painting done. I'll try and get some pictures done tommorow after work.

I had to give it a bash ....
Nothin' special ... just more of the same old sh!te. :D
Oh hell, what ridiculous project is this ... I'll look out for that plog starting.

It is absolutely cheating. :D
I am obviously going to use the minsi for both games when I can.
It will work the other way around as well. For example whilst I am painting up 12 rats for quest I have just painted up the twenty I want for the unit for WFB.
All these silly projects I keep coming up with are all just to help me get more stuff painted ... at least this stuff will give me in some fun games as a bonus.

I have a plan with the bases ... It is all tied in with my plans for the 'dungeon'. I won't say more now as my ideas are still evolving.

All manner of ancient things coming your way soon. :D

Great stuff as always, but shouldn't you give the metal skeletons shields? I like these old model logs, and I have to take my hat off for you Harry, since you have managed to paint the blocky toy 5th edition wolfs in a way that actually make them look fine.

That paint scheme for the Tomb Guards remind me of the excellent Barrow Wight Lotr minis: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat750033a&prodId=prod1500565a I recommend them for any Undead buff. ;)

Oh, I didn't notice the first time I looked, but the Tomb Guardian appears to do some weighlifting. :D

Can't settle on which shields to use.
I started with the wolves when I first started my plog they were the first thing i painted. My painting has come on a bit since I painted those ... i am not very happy with them anymore ... but got to move on.
Love those barrow wight minis.

So I guess the obvious place to start is with my 4 heroes

Now if you have been following my 'Blast from the past' log you know I have painted up these four guys from the earliest days of Citadel.

http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/3839/img6663.jpg

http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/1470/img7905o.jpg

http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/8477/img7914v.jpg

http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/9707/img9395m.jpg

Hard to beat these wonderful old minis so those would do nicely however these next minis are some of my favorites minis of all time that I will be painting up to represent my heroes.

This is one of my favorite wizards ... just one of a whole bunch of vintage Wizards Citadel made:

http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/7894/img0398ma.jpg

The first Dwarf is hard to beat but this is one of my favorite Dwarves of all time. He fits my image of a Dwarf perfectly.

http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/898/img0403yu.jpg

Then my favorite Elf of all time is this classic from the 5th edition:

http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/2158/img0487vmc.jpg

The Barbarian is a tougher call ... I will need another post because of the picture limit.

Harry
06-04-2012, 22:39
This is my favorite Citadel Barbarian: (quite an early C01 fighter)
As you can see I have made a start on him.

http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/7936/img0410fw.jpg

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/6862/img0411jhm.jpg

But I love the Barbarian types ... So I have a few different options ... I blame it on seeing Conan at the cinema when i was just a boy. :D

These two are from other manufacturers ... not sure I can even remember which ... but they are great minis.

http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/5298/img0409dp.jpg

http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/1970/img0399zv.jpg

Finally I have my favorite Slayer of all time.
I just love the come on then if you think you're 'ard enough pose.
The left hand is a conversion.

In other news .....

here are some 5th edition metal rats cleaned up based and undercoated all ready to go:

http://img826.imageshack.us/img826/7287/img0424xd.jpg

Some metal bats I ... I made a start on these:

http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/7416/img0419t.jpg

Some more of the plastic spiders I have half finished from ages ago to base up individually:

http://img845.imageshack.us/img845/9840/img0423nv.jpg

and some snotlings ... these are a selection of the Marauder ones:

http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/7311/img0394aj.jpg

My aim is to have painted all of this lot over the easter weekend.
Wish me luck. :D

Top stuff with the old school miniatures. All the pieces I grew up coveting as a lad. We actually like exactly the same Wood Elf figure; which I too recetnly acquired a week back. It is a gorgeous figure and one that will challenge my painting.. an entire cloak of leaves.. so many options for seasonal ideas.

Great beginnings with figures from the past.. love that wizard.. any idea who was sculpting for Citadel at this point?

Both those Dwarf models are pure brilliance. Like you say, I too feel they are the perfect image of what Dwarfs are (or at least were, in simpler times) about. Absolutely lovely models. But I will tell you, your painted Dwarf I feel is a nicer model than the other one, but that's a matter of taste, I am sure.

But there are loads of those old dwarves I like, It was the dwarves that started my collecting bug. I wanted them all. Wouldn't like to pick any one.

So I got a whole bunch of stuff painted over the weekend.

I painted the rats, the bats, the spiders and the Snotlings and started into a bunch of other stuff.... some squigs, some skeletons with bows and some ghouls. No picture yet because I need to do the bases on all of these. But I am cracking on.

More exciting I played my first game with my 9 year old boy as the wizard, my 7 year old girl as the elf and their two, cousins who were staying with us over Easter, as the barbarian and the wizard. I was DM .... happy days. :D

I'll try and get the bases done at the weekend and get the pictures up.

What is it with WHQ and old miniatures? I'm not knocking it, I'm exactly the same - dusting off old models that I would never dream of including in a warhammer army and proudly using them in Quest. I don't know if it's just the age of the game, but it just feels right.
I even find I'm painting them in a bolder style than I normally use. I caught myself blacklining a chaos warrior the other day.

It is an odd feeling playing with my boy. I discovered D&D all on my own. I had to work it out. I sometimes wonder if I am going to take something away from him by introducing him to the games and explaining it all. I hope I don't take anything away from the voyage of discovery.

I won't post them all but here is a group shot:

http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/691/img0518ot.jpg

They are a bugger to paint .... they are tiny.

I can't decide what colour to paint the eyes or if I should just dot in the pupils?

Couple snotlings in there I don't have (pout) :)

They are fun to paint up, whomever did the last of the first set you posted, completed a series of them in poses and grins that I feel are the best of the whole collection and personify snotlings.. almost Paul Bonner-like in caricature.

The bases are a nice contrast, might try something similar on my beastmen bases next. :)

All of these are Marauder miniatures. I guess they were Aly or Trish Morrison.

One can only imagine the glee you must experience every day when you open up yet another box of miniatures and find hidden and forgotten treasure. I myself have experienced this feeling on some occasions, but I'd wager it pales in comparison to what you have lying around. Love those skelly archers, nice paintjob too!

Good thing that you mentioned this in your other plog, without putting a link in your sig I wouldn't have found it I fear. Good crop in twenty days, even if you painted most of them before starting the plog. "I will follow", as those Irishmen sang.

Looking good, enjoying all the early era figures; personally going to use the new plastics from Vampire Counts - have a couple of ideas they can help me make; but I have several classic figures to use as NPC undead the heroes will encounter. Yet to see a decent mummy figure since this era too.

Had a peek at my sachet of unpainted snotlings, missing just this guy:

Here are the snotlings again. They are now finished with static grass on the bases.

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/3189/img0619ut.jpg

Here is some even older lil' green skins ... much older.

...and even SMALLER!

These are pre-slotta "Lesser Night Goblins".
They are rare as hell, a b@gger to find on e-bay and I really want a couple more if anyone has some.

I very nearly based these up as snotling swarms for use with my Night Goblin army ... which would have been cool.
But in the end my ongoing interest with skirmish games and dungeon bashing won the day and I based them up individually.

Harry, those weasels are just begging for you to write them some sort of humorous quest. Maybe they could be magical and super rare mystical weasels of power that the warriors have to rescue, and which are really difficult to catch. Yes. don't know what it is about her ... just the simplicity of the pose I guess ... creeping a long the Dungeon corridor rather than the more typical heroic of fighting pose.
He is very cool. I have discovered him since on a mini archive forum ... sculpted by Chaz Elliot .... talented chap. Done some lovely minis for Reaper more recently but I have to say the stuff he did for HHG seems to stand out amongst some of their other minis even back then.

Here's another bit of fun .... again more D&D than Quest ... but it won't take long to knock up some Quest rules for him.

B is for Bee. :D

Yay Harry! Yay Warhammer Quest.
Always loved Quest. I even ended up making a load of 3D Hirst Arts rooms. Threads like this inspire me to get off my backside and get back into the hobby.
Always enjoyed your plogs and comments H. Genial and humorous.
Loving the bee in particular. Very inventive (and cheap, thus appealing to the Yorkshireman in me :) )

A question on your photography. What's your set up? The pics are very well taken and full of light. I struggle to get the same levels with mine. Could you divulge some Harry magick* sir.

Keep up the good work and Happy New Year!

I do love my cheap plastic toys as minis .... I have more to do so stay tuned.

If you look at the first post on my main plog you will see my painting table is white and sits directly underneath a velux window. I have no fancy set up I just sit them on my table under that window shove a sheet of white plasicard standing behind them and snap away. I Have a canon sureshot which has proved a great bit of kit for the job especially considering I have NO skills. The one thing I do is set it on manual and then click the +/- button until this little light chnages to +1 or +2 so I slightly over expose the pictures to make them nice and bright. I hope that helps. I am not a skilled photographer. I have just landed on my feet with the the window providing loads of natural light and a Camera that has proved idiot proof. I sometimes take several in the hope of getting a good one. :D

Happy new year to you too.

Well it's funny you should mention them .... I just came here to post a few.

I shall never be short of Men at arms again.
These are just part of a large number of Bretonnian retainers I have painted.
The colour scheme shamelessly stolen and used for the majority of my force.
Many more pictures on my main blog of folks are interested.

I expected lightboxes and / or reflectors etc but it's simply light eh, who'd have thunk it?!! It's in pretty short supply up here this time of year but the payoff is the skies are enormous and the colours amazing.
I'm fortunate that I've got a mancave that also has Velux windows. I can easily manoeuvre / fashion a set up to take advantage of this, which thanks to your advice / help, I'll now experiment with.

Cheers H... right, off to stalk more of your plogs

Just a quick update from me:
talking of barbarian holding orc heads ... have you seen this guy.
Wonderful sculpt from Steve Buddle. Nice and chunky and Warhammerquesty:

Lovely work as usual, excellent job on the stubble.

Harry, those weasels are just begging for you to write them some sort of humorous quest. Maybe they could be magical and super rare mystical weasels of power that the warriors have to rescue, and which are really difficult to catch. Or maybe they could be psycho killer weasels (remember Monty Python and that little white rabbit?).

You have to do it, Harry.

Those aren't weasels! They're stoat-ally different creatures...

By popular demand :D .....

Soooo ... with the anniversary of HeroQuest last year I dug out the old set. Always loved HeroQuest.
Then at Oldhammer Day a very fine fellow indeed turned up with the most beautiful homemade HeroQuest set.
At the heart of this was a 3D board. It was quite something ... not made with Hirst art blocks ... this one was laser cut. It was somehow made by taking a photograph of the board and then clearly some sort of magic was involved .... :?

Anyway ... I managed to get him to make another one and with the promise of a night of mad passion with my sister ... it was mine.

I had always fancied a 3D board but all that mucking about and expense with Hirst art blocks was more trouble than I could face ..... but this was ready to go ... it just needed a paint job.

... and here it is (Undercoated):

http://imageshack.com/a/img673/2146/jSqvWh.jpg

Those of you who know this board well will see that it is not quite a HeroQuest board .... very subtly different here and there and the key differences are that the squares a bit bigger ... perfect for a 25mm base and the corridor around the edge is a double square instead of a single ... (which are the two things I would have done to improve the HeroQuest board) ... oh, and the rooms are upside down. I can only guess this was done so that it is a NOT a HeroQuest board.

http://imageshack.com/a/img911/9030/UQlEH0.jpg

I have spent a long time looking at it trying to decide exactly what i wanted to do with it. I was really keen to do it in the style of some of GW's old floor plans but much as I tried I just couldn't help myself .... I had to paint it as a HeroQuest board.

However, I always found the original a bit .... Bright. So I just tried to paint it 'toned down' a bit...a bit more 'natural. So it is still a HeroQuest board just a bit 'softer' ... a bit 'quieter'.

Anyway I found myself with a weekend with not much on ... so in between family stuff ... Here is where I am after a two days painting ... still loads to do .... got to finish painting the corridors and then add all the 3D stones and bones and blood splatters etc that detail the original. I also have to finish the gold trim ... several highlights to go. i confess I am still not sure i have gone the right way with the border. I keep thinking I should have stuck to the stone greys of the original board ... I just thought the gold might make it look a bit ...posh. :)

http://imageshack.com/a/img661/8693/Ow1XGg.jpg

http://imageshack.com/a/img661/5666/5CLsYH.jpg

Here are some close ups of the rooms with the board on top ... so you can see the the slightly more 'toned down' effect I have gone for ... you will see my blue/greys are not quite so blue and my yellow/browns are not quite so yellow ... the red/browns not so red.
