hey dudes and dudettes

this is a small painting diary to document my efforts in repainting a commissioned oldskool warhammer quest boardgame

The models are quite cartoony by modern standards so im trying to be fairly realistic and atmospheric with my painting choices to balance that out somewhat

Im relatively happy with the bat and the spider but in future I think Ill have to try making each one vary in hue slightly(like have a few purpley spiders, a few blue ones etc.). The orcs are ok I reckon, im happy with the one with the shiteatinggrin thats holding the sword but i get the feeling theres too much black and brown across all the greenskins. So I was thinking maybe if all the different units had another seperate random colour added it would break them up a bit for the eye? like red on the sword orcs, purple on the nightgobs, blue on the arrerboys etc..

Magnificent painting - each and every one of them. You even made the night goblin archers look good. And your spiders are a work of art!

Some really nicely painted stuff here - can't wait to see a complete shot.

Nice dreadnought, too - I'm sure my WHQ didn't come with one though! :p

I painted another minotaur, its slightly lighter colour than the other one. You cant really tell in the pic but I was trying to make it human skin tone on the feet, hands and nose and greyish cowtone on the rest...but yeah, crappy nighttime pictures are crappy

Very, very good! I like that the cartoonish elements still come through your realistic paint scheme ;-)

Is this commission of the Lair of the Orc Lord and Catacombs of Terror as well? Does that mean I can look forward to the Dread King, Luthor, Bogoff and all the other cool characters GW made for those packs? Looking forward to seeing more! If you have a website for your commissions, put it in your signature to try and drive up the business.

Lovely work. My favourite is the Bretonnian Knight. Its just a shame that this is only a commission and not your own personal collection!

I think these two might be the coolest warhammer quest models - mohawk squig and the hunchback. I really enjoyed painting these guys

trying to make the boring, grey, stone doorway a little varied in hue to spice them up, while still trying to retain their character as boring stone doorways :P

FANTASTIC painting. You breathe so much life into such characterful sculpts! Great to see, thank you for sharing with all of us!

Great downplayed technique, the collection looks brilliant, are you using washes over a grey preshaded base coat?

Also, the archways, what did you do to add that variation? Washes over various shades of grey in a similar manner?

Thanks for your time in answering my queries! :D

Im using dymark spraypaint - the stuff they sell at bunnings that is used for marking lines and junk on the road and so can be sprayed 'upside down' unlike regular sprays. I use this stuff because I cant afford an airbrush, and while they dont offer as much of a colour range they seem to do the trick for gritty/dirty stuff like terrain

So for the stone doorways im undercoating them gloss black, then lightly dusting the raised areas with fluro green and fluro pink alternately. Im using fluro pink and fluro green because weirdly enough, as colour theorists state (lol), if you mix a colour with its exact opposite on the colour wheel both colours are neutralised and turn into grey. More often than not you cant get the exact match dead on so its a mix that results in an unpredictable kind of greyish/brownish sludge. With the spraypainting though, you can have bits that are more pink than green, and have them meet in the middle so overall you get the kind of effect of warm and cool light/shade cast over the model in a naturally random kind of fashion.

After ive done the pink and green i do a tiny bit of white over the top to further dull down the colour and bring it back to grey. Then its just a matter of putting glazes on the stuff that needs to be particular colours - like red on the bricks or whatever. Then I blackline it, add the edge highlights where they need it and voila! move onto next model..

started painting the skaven, and did the remaining minotaur and the last few orcs

I like how the different sheilds and hues make these identical models all a bit more distinctive

Quite true, has worked out nicely. Those figures have aged well, the detail is quite good considering their era.

Very nice, your technique really does the Hunter justice, sombre and suitably understated. The slayer is a great model, how did you find painting the axe's pommel? The gems on mine were barely detailed. Casting issue perhaps?

I have to de-lurk to comment.

Really inspiring stuff, I absolutely love the atmosphere these minis give off.

I have a question - did you use any metallic paints at all or are you using various shades of grey to achieve the metallic look of the weapons?
