View Full Version : Bob's WHQ paintathon

05-06-2013, 06:55
Been revising the rules and painting up a full set of miniatures for years at this point. The good news is that I'm in the home stretch of finishing my old world set of miniatures though so I thought it was about time that I started posting some pics of them. So to start off with here are all of the base game box miniatures painted up and ready to go. They were all painted at various points in time so some do look better than others.

This is the tip of the ice berg as miniatures wise I'm only one dragon short (white dragon) of owning all of the miniatures I need and I'd say the set is around 70%-80% finished for the old world miniatures. Stay tuned for more and more and... ya more.

06-06-2013, 17:49
Amazing, nostalgia overload! I am, however, outraged by your lack of snotlings ;)

06-06-2013, 18:16
Wait, are you saying you've collected and mostly painted every monster from the roleplay book lists!? If thats true, this will be very interesting!!!

06-06-2013, 19:30
I have indeed collected all the monsters and the painting process is nearing its end. I'm trying to finish it before we get started on our next campaign which will include both the lustria monsters and sewer monsters. As for the snotlings somehow I missed those in the photos. So here they are with the recently finished witch elves.

Somehow I forgot the snotlings bases when painting them but that won't take long to remedy. Also a nice happy group shot of the base game minis:

06-06-2013, 19:38
It didn't quite sink in when i read your 1st post. ALL the monster tables? WOW! Skin tone on the elves looks ace.

06-06-2013, 22:07
Thanks just started using Vallejo washes (the GW ones are way to thin from the last pot I had). Its just a white base with a flesh tone wash over it so super easy to do.

06-06-2013, 22:23
Just finished up the wights today!

Probably shouldn't blow the load already but since they have been done for years here are the big stars of WHQ:

I can't take credit for the vermin lord as I bought him off ebay and just did a few touch ups on the paint job (it was already very nicely painted).

11-06-2013, 01:20
Lots of photos taken, more to come and just a few to post up even!

Today is a mixture with a banshee (reaper mini), Black Orcs (GW), Bull Centaurs (impact minis) and the Liche King(reaper with gw parts). Since we play with the custom rules set (see sig) our monster table goes to 11 and the liche king happens to be one of those nasty things on that table. I just love the miniature for him too. Sadly (or thankfully) I don't recall him getting to hit the table yet...

For anyone who is on the fence about mixing and matching GW vs other miniatures then get off it! Grab whatever you can that you like the look of and or can afford!

14-06-2013, 03:02
So the giant was fun if not a little infuriating to paint but he's done at least! As are the skaven globadiers:

Also why bother posting a bunch of hero pictures when you can just get em all in one go!

And that's not all! Why not throw in a few stone trolls from reaper while I'm at it...

I'm so close to finishing up the rules for a sewer expansion I can taste its nastyness too. Unfortunately I still have about 10 more adventures to write and several treasures to add but hey its better than just starting out! Anyone have a few good adventure ideas by chance?

15-06-2013, 16:31
Where to start!

Glowing effect is amazing, always liked those wight models. The big nasties are also looking really good, especially like the KoS. I've never actually managed to level up the warriors high enough to face (read: get killed by) any of the greater daemons! That group shot of the heroes is ace, would be cool to get some shots of these guys in action.

Looking forward to the sewer expansion, I'm assuming you'll be sharing!?!

17-06-2013, 23:38
Thanks again. The sewers will indeed be posted in the revised materials as soon as they are finished. We are working through an AD&D 2nd ed campaign right now so play testing is not happening at all but the rules are still (slowly) being completed. I'll eventually get more pics on but the stupid computer caught fire (literally) so things are super messed up on my end.

Thankfully the ancient laptop from days long past is 'working' and has not crapped out for over 10 minutes now!

18-06-2013, 07:01
This is some pretty impressive stuff, man. Well done

18-06-2013, 21:54
Well time for more minis as the marathon continues. As always I'll start with the newly finished:

Chaos warriors (mix of old models with new shields), One of the Vampires, and a Wight Champions/lord to finish up the wights!

This whole project has been off and on for years so please excuse some of the following old paint jobs...

Bloodletters, Khorne Pony riders, Mummies, And a pairing of Orc Shaman with a Orc Warboss

24-06-2013, 04:38
Back again with a now 'mostly' working computer! So let's add a newly painted vampire to the thread:

For the old here comes an odd mishmash of painting styles due to the years of separation between each set of models. First up is the Daemon Prince of Tzeentch followed by some Beastmen and finally a fairly old set of converted chaos dwarves. Unfortunately I am to cheap to get the real thing so these will have to do!

To end on a super happy and colorful note here are a few trolls that I bought painted off of the bay and couldn't help but leave them as is! As weird as the paint scheme may be it is very well done.

26-06-2013, 07:37
Just finished the Dragon Ogre Shaggoth. Due to a lack of time (and incoming commission work) I've been attempting to speed paint through the rest of the list of monsters. Shaggy here I think took about 2-3 hours. Hard to tell due to the amount of projects being worked on at once lol

And whats pappa without his baby monsters?

And finally How about a few dragons to wind out this dragon post? Not all of them but a few at least:

The random dwarf is to show just how huge that red dragon is! Reaper did an amazing job on the model and to further their credit even though it was all metal it went together easily without pinning!

26-06-2013, 19:33
This is a truly impressive collection. I'd love to see a pic of your "to be painted" pile, although it sounds like you're cranking through these awfully fast!

27-06-2013, 01:33
As far as the old world portion of the painting goes the 'to be painted' pile is very small now (about 30 models or so). The majority of what I've posted so far has been painted over the last several years I've just been posting back log pics with each finished painting session. They are going fast but not THAT fast! Sadly the lustria and sewers portion of the models are not only no where near done but not even fully purchased...

27-06-2013, 22:05
Still quite the impressive collection, I'd say. I've thoroughly enjoyed rifling through these. One suggestion: It'd save everyone a bunch of clicking and cycling through images if you posted them full-size with an img link rather than uploading them to the site and having site-generated thumbnails. More a matter of preference, really, but I know I tend to skip over plogs where people make me have to do extra clicking to do the good stuff.

And your stuff, sir, is definitely good!

28-06-2013, 18:36
Presto change o! Thanks for the suggestion less clicking enabled!

08-07-2013, 04:36
Long time coming I know but I just started a new job and until next week I won't have much time for painting sadly. I did however get the Reaper Kickstarter Bones in and man are they awesome! So of course I had to add deathsleet in as my white dragon:

Also yes I finally got a makeshift Black Box! Mostly to show off the lighting effects for some Dark Vengeance marines that I painted up for the local game store here as their demo copy. You can see those in the blog in my sig if you are curious along with other tid bits.

So now that the something new is out of the way here is a little something old. The pink/blue horrors from the older ranges were always something I wanted to have as I loved the models. And they are a blast to paint up because painting pink is just plain fun.

I really really really hate the fact that the current GW beast of nurgle only has one pose. Thankfully a much more thoughtful company named Reaper decided to make the perfect conversion fodder for the other two beasts. See if you can guess what minis they are:

Next up are my centaurs and you may be asking why they don't have bows. Well the reason is that once centaurs graduate to champions they more often than not draw melee weapons from the magic weapon table. That and the bows looked silly...

Finally here is my cockatrice painted up in a fairly stereotypical scheme but I still enjoy it.

08-07-2013, 11:45
This is a brilliant thread! Really impressed by so many things in this, but my favourite has to be the wights. ;)

09-07-2013, 21:50
Quick update before another crazy weekend of not painting. Got the skeletons that have been sitting in the 'started but far from finished' pile into the 'finally finished' pile:

And for some models in the 'long finished' pile we have a Skaven Grey Seer, and the always lovable squigs!

That's it for now but I'm able to scale back my hours of real world work soon so that should mean more frequent updates to the quickly approaching end of the old world minis. After that its Lustria and sewers time!

15-07-2013, 07:26
Well I have a ton of distractions to painting for WHQ now in the form of commission work but that doesn't mean I'm giving up. Unfortunately that giant Cthulhu model from reaper hit the front of the que due to sheer awesomeness so here is a Dark Elf Lord that I managed to finish up tonight. Somehow I just find dark elves to be the least interesting things to paint so far...

And to go way back to the early days of this project here are the converted Chaos Dwarf Lord and Sorcerer:

Finally one of my favorite models of all time from the GW line its a Chaos Sorcerer:

19-07-2013, 08:01
Those Beasts of Nurgle look suitably icky. Nice work.

24-07-2013, 18:28
Nothing old world specific this time but rest assured this cutey will be causing sanity loss in WHQ eventually....

The Hobgoblins are nearly done so they will be up next on the photo block. I really just couldn't resist painting Cthulhu for obvious reasons!

24-07-2013, 18:55
Cracking paint job on the Cthulu beastie, makes me wanna get one. What's the bones material like? Does it lose detail? I've seen a few painted models which don't look as sharp as they should (slight rounding of edges, etc) which obviously won't be noticable on the big monsters. I'm really umming and ahhing about some of the 28mm models because I like the price.

If you ever make up some WHQ rules for this guy please share!

25-07-2013, 01:09
Buy some bones I think you will be impressed. The edges aren't quite as sharp but its really more like the difference between pewter and plastic. The best news is they go together really really fast. Cthulhu was about 5 minutes tops of assembly! If you have ever painted the descent board game miniatures its like working with those but with way more detail.

I'm working on an overarching campaign system to add depth into a WHQ campaign in which one of the adversaries is an ancient alien god thus necessitating the 'need' for the above baddie :)

25-07-2013, 14:18
That sounds cool! There should be a sticky thread for WHQ gribblies on here too.

Sent from my BlackBerry 9320 using Tapatalk

29-07-2013, 19:35
Sorry for the slow progress I had hoped to be done by now but thanks to being happily employed with a new full time job I'm not! But hey the Hobos, or in normies terms, hobgoblins are done! These are the new bones goblins and as soon as I saw them I decided they would be my new hobgoblins (first ones were gnoblars...).

And for our previously painted but never revealed I have the fanatics and Gigantic Spiders.

02-08-2013, 00:42
Wow man, just spent a few minutes browsing through the nostalgic head trip that is your collection - must say the Dark Elf Anti-Hero is very cool piece. Amazing collection :)

07-08-2013, 07:09
Alright got a few easy paint jobs in between commission work. First up the Ghosts taken from several reaper bones minis for variety and happy fun time. Also we may be starting up a new campaign soon and one person wants to play the Chainsaw Warrior which was made as an april fools joke but is fully playable so why not!

I realize that the only other hero pics are either the original four or the giant group shot of all of them. If anyone is interested I can post some close ups of the heroes too. Might as well post up a few older paint jobs as well. Here are the dark elf assassins and ghouls!

I've also realized I don't do WIP shots of anything so if anyone wants to see whats on the bench so to speak let me know. Otherwise I'll just do the intermittent finished model shots as normal.

07-08-2013, 08:18
I'd love to see more closeups of the heroes!

19-08-2013, 17:12
Made some custom slimes for the sewers and painted them up nice and slimy like.

Also by singular demand there are the heroes in close ups. Be warned that most of these are fairly old paint jobs!

19-08-2013, 20:48
My demands have been met, and I am content :P

Great stuff man! My faves are the Manaan's blades leader dude and the amazon. I guess I have a weakness for gold armour. What are you using the manaan guy as?

I better match that effort and get going with a log of my own soon!

20-08-2013, 00:47
Glad you like! The blades guy is our outlaw currently though that and the warrior priest have new minis that I'd like to use instead. They will be replaced once the new minis are painted some day.

01-09-2013, 18:36
Looks great some off the models age a lot better then others like the barbarian and telf. he wizard to the dwarf and

Shas'El Tael
02-09-2013, 02:32
The Bugman's Ranger Dwarf is a personal favourite, can see him taking a swig then thunking some orc across the snout with him flagon.

02-09-2013, 08:19
Those spiders where are they from?

02-09-2013, 20:31
Those are the metal reaper spiders but now they make them in the bones material which is WAY easier to keep from chipping.

06-09-2013, 19:54
Just a few more WHQ miniatures in between commission work. The Forgeworld plague toads really are amazing sculpts with a TON of detail packed into every disgusting crevice. These beauties will be showing up in the sewers as well as Norsca.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Jy4h3Q8w49g/UiojwJ99TjI/AAAAAAAAAfc/tJFUIqQyNRo/s640/nurgle+plague+toads.jpg (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Jy4h3Q8w49g/UiojwJ99TjI/AAAAAAAAAfc/tJFUIqQyNRo/s1600/nurgle+plague+toads.jpg)

Just to go along with them here's a few of the plaguebearers painted long ago and for random's sake a hydra!

Very cool, tempted to buy a plague toad and have it as a Quest objective for my young knight and assorted friends with swords.

10-09-2013, 21:13
Great stuff!

Love the Nurgle stuff.

12-09-2013, 19:19
Had a full two days off in a row and spent the majority of it working on models! The sewer expansion is two adventures away from release and I've added a few painted models to compliment it. The three plague drones were a pain to put together, paint and then attempt to rank up (they are going into a daemon army for a fantasy apocalypse soon) but hey they are fun to have!

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jIzuUYAIcgc/UjICeDxyicI/AAAAAAAAAgk/eLu7MEH64aU/s640/nurgle+plague+Drones.jpg (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jIzuUYAIcgc/UjICeDxyicI/AAAAAAAAAgk/eLu7MEH64aU/s1600/nurgle+plague+Drones.jpg)
This little dragon fairy is a replacement for a druid fairy I've somehow lost. Its so incredibly tiny and super cute.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pHPnohDSV4Y/UjICfExKo4I/AAAAAAAAAgo/_kPvjaOgp74/s640/fairy.jpg (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pHPnohDSV4Y/UjICfExKo4I/AAAAAAAAAgo/_kPvjaOgp74/s1600/fairy.jpg)

and a few pics to finish it off of some older works for quest: The wraiths and skaven jezzails.

14-09-2013, 14:17
Great stuff, mate. I am green with envy...would you have a spare room you would be willing to rent to me, by any chance? :D

25-09-2013, 05:06
A more comfortable Dungeon

Finsihed up the dungeon room features for WHQ so the monsters have some furniture. In addition cranked out a few fimir for Lustria.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-j-pq0N3yvhY/UkJf-MYc2AI/AAAAAAAAAj4/WJTWAcqELiI/s640/room+features.JPG (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-j-pq0N3yvhY/UkJf-MYc2AI/AAAAAAAAAj4/WJTWAcqELiI/s1600/room+features.JPG)

The room features are a mixture of Bones, Heroquest (with a few custom bits) and Warhammer scenery. Adds just that little bit of extra randomness to the game though.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H5XsmXlR7D4/UkJf5s-YVeI/AAAAAAAAAjc/1Or4Q2jtP-s/s640/fimir.JPG (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H5XsmXlR7D4/UkJf5s-YVeI/AAAAAAAAAjc/1Or4Q2jtP-s/s1600/fimir.JPG)

And might as well throw in a few older pics of Ogres, the Beastman Shaman and Fiends of Slaanesh. Those fiends were a mighty spending group, deffinately didn't go down easy! Also had to do a lot of bending just to stop them from being so uniform but the models are fun to paint at least.

25-09-2013, 23:16

Andy T's Necromunda Plog (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?343354-Andy_T-s-Necromunda-plog&p=6266591)

26-09-2013, 05:17
Thanks for the comments again! We have a few pics of them mid game in the campaign thread they pop up now and again. I didn't want them to show up too often as taking 2-3 spaces out of a 4x4 room tends to change the layout of the room dramatically.

26-09-2013, 20:14
The Bull Centaur from what did you make them?

27-09-2013, 01:50
The Bull Centaurs are from impact miniatures fantasy football line if I remember correctly.

07-10-2013, 07:04
Just recently added the new lizardmen models to my WHQ rules (in sig). Sadly my bastilidon is barely assembled however I did this one for a friend of mine who wanted to evolve it ot ultra mega bastilidon and make it fight other poke... wait no what? Lots of sculpting and silliness with this one so I had to show it off.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tqFxb3K6-3c/UlJMqMhwXQI/AAAAAAAAAk0/VFiM6JOtjj0/s640/DSCF0537.JPG (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tqFxb3K6-3c/UlJMqMhwXQI/AAAAAAAAAk0/VFiM6JOtjj0/s1600/DSCF0537.JPG)

In real WHQ painting news I managed to get the skaven slaves for WHQ done as well made from the reaper bones kohbolds which look pretty spiffy if I do say so myself.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PIizqHXBa6I/UlJM4hazNTI/AAAAAAAAAlE/kEu8HlfT_S4/s640/skaven+slaves.jpg (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PIizqHXBa6I/UlJM4hazNTI/AAAAAAAAAlE/kEu8HlfT_S4/s1600/skaven+slaves.jpg)

And of course a few pics of some older quest work the winged serpent and stormvermin all ready to inhabit dungeons a plenty! You'd really think that after being snowed in for multiple days I might be able to get more done but... nope.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pFHURbc0SjM/UlJM6vZpZtI/AAAAAAAAAlM/KUk0RZCX03E/s640/winged+serpent.jpg (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pFHURbc0SjM/UlJM6vZpZtI/AAAAAAAAAlM/KUk0RZCX03E/s1600/winged+serpent.jpg)

08-10-2013, 00:45
I find this thread very annoying. I innocently go online to look at a few bits, then get sucked in! 2 hours later I still haven't got anything painted!!!

08-10-2013, 01:44
Try crappy horror and sci fi movies that's what gets me through the monotony!

12-11-2013, 18:29
Hi Bob, love all the work you have done, what a massive undertaking! Was wondering how you made your slimes? Fancied having a go at making some myself: have the rules from your Quest revision work, thank you very much! I'm guessing a glue gun was involved, and was wondering what you built on top of. Was thinking of using some old corks I have lying about. Would love some advice when you get a chance,
Ta Daxo

21-11-2013, 05:42
Thanks for the comments and glad you're enjoying the rules. The slimes were made out of sculpting epoxy (apoxisculpt but greenstuff works just fine too). Just built a frame and then went crazy with a glue gun for the rest. Super easy and fast.

22-11-2013, 22:21
Thanks bob, I have all the ingredients, just time and gumption needed now. Will post some pics when I get some made :)

Hi Bob.
I keep coming back here to admire your work. Just dusted of my copy of Warhammer Quest. You have now inspired me to try and complete the monster tables. :)

01-12-2013, 22:55
I find this thread very annoying. I innocently go online to look at a few bits, then get sucked in! 2 hours later I still haven't got anything painted!!!

Ha Ha I'm the same. I have hundreds of figures to paint.

02-12-2013, 22:43
Great plog - the Kobolds have come out very nicely indeed.

09-12-2013, 06:30
Thanks for the kind words. Just about ready to get back into some quest painting (commission work is a huge time sink after a full time job). To tide you over though I just finished up the first unit for my own dwarf army that will some day be equally useful in quest I'm sure.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dr6YeTc3WOc/UqVeEyhNjyI/AAAAAAAAAuM/wq5fZmTNLmg/s1600/DSCF0731.JPGSorry again for the long drought of questing but we all know how easy it is to finish all that bare plastic, resin and pewter in the closets right?

10-12-2013, 22:58
Those lead mountains just keep growing ;)

On another note, I like your miners and the flames on their helmets.

Back To The Dungeon
Its time to finally get some real progress on Warhammer Quest miniatures!

First up two daemon princes of khorne, not really sure which I want to use for sure. One is just a 'little' more subdued...

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dmP8nfc1eC0/Uq5bkFoHVFI/AAAAAAAAAwI/YhGNujJe2EY/s640/daemon+prince+khorne.jpg (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dmP8nfc1eC0/Uq5bkFoHVFI/AAAAAAAAAwI/YhGNujJe2EY/s1600/daemon+prince+khorne.jpg)

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8SIhbe8x2Ho/Uq5bk2O6aDI/AAAAAAAAAwM/fdi9xjb9jx8/s640/daemon+prince+khorne+2.jpg (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8SIhbe8x2Ho/Uq5bk2O6aDI/AAAAAAAAAwM/fdi9xjb9jx8/s1600/daemon+prince+khorne+2.jpg)

A little boring but the Goblin Herders are here to keep those squigs in line now:

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OVFZ55vuphI/Uq5bmYI-cUI/AAAAAAAAAwY/ghHEx6akDKk/s640/goblin+herders.jpg (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OVFZ55vuphI/Uq5bmYI-cUI/AAAAAAAAAwY/ghHEx6akDKk/s1600/goblin+herders.jpg)
And the warpfire throwers are finished up. I so wish I hadn't bought the metal ones before the plastic island of blood weapon teams came out. Sooooo much more expensive!

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M7DhxHx4Nuk/Uq5boxCbQnI/AAAAAAAAAwg/dSVsRFPcNCY/s640/skaven+warpfire+throwers.jpg (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M7DhxHx4Nuk/Uq5boxCbQnI/AAAAAAAAAwg/dSVsRFPcNCY/s1600/skaven+warpfire+throwers.jpg)

Alright now for some old photos that haven't been posted yet. First up the Daemonettes.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AjsbBEzu1Lo/Uq5bqtyOKvI/AAAAAAAAAwo/1Xve8oex6Lg/s640/slaaneh+daemonettes.jpg (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AjsbBEzu1Lo/Uq5bqtyOKvI/AAAAAAAAAwo/1Xve8oex6Lg/s1600/slaaneh+daemonettes.jpg)

The skaven gutter runners work nicely as assassins, master assassins and those pesky level 11 groups of deathmasters (that's right groups).

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IfYlFOW4q8o/Uq5bvduO0vI/AAAAAAAAAww/fl27nftlDY0/s640/skaven+assassins.jpg (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IfYlFOW4q8o/Uq5bvduO0vI/AAAAAAAAAww/fl27nftlDY0/s1600/skaven+assassins.jpg)

Since its been a while lets show off another two daemon princes first the unaligned one and a familiar face from slaanesh:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dyWRyBthLlE/Uq5cOcA8m2I/AAAAAAAAAw8/zfG88TvgJFI/s640/daemon+prince+1.jpg (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dyWRyBthLlE/Uq5cOcA8m2I/AAAAAAAAAw8/zfG88TvgJFI/s1600/daemon+prince+1.jpg)

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-I1qZfHeAQF4/Uq5cOAhvoTI/AAAAAAAAAw4/h1R8Nrs3DEI/s640/daemon+prince+slaanesh.jpg (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-I1qZfHeAQF4/Uq5cOAhvoTI/AAAAAAAAAw4/h1R8Nrs3DEI/s1600/daemon+prince+slaanesh.jpg)

The old world table is nearly at an end. I still have three more groups to finish up and then find time to take a HUGE group shot!

16-12-2013, 07:04
Wow great update! I think the Khorne guy needs a bigger sword! ;)

I think he's overcompensating. There must be a lot of Slaanesh daemons round his locale.

26-12-2013, 02:06
And Done.

Finished up the old world monster tables for Warhammer Quest finally!

First up are the Slaanesh and Khorne chaos warriors just to be complete. This way no matter which god your chaos warrior chooses I've got it covered!

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_N8ExwSl5Uk/UruJfP_rdoI/AAAAAAAAAyQ/3vi58eT9wjU/s640/slaanesh+warrior.JPG (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_N8ExwSl5Uk/UruJfP_rdoI/AAAAAAAAAyQ/3vi58eT9wjU/s1600/slaanesh+warrior.JPG)

The dark elves were a bit of a salvage job as they already came painted (horribly) so some details are no longer present.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FqZ3THBJXB0/UruJeSpxoFI/AAAAAAAAAyE/qnaLNkL-I8U/s640/dark+elf+crossbow.JPG (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FqZ3THBJXB0/UruJeSpxoFI/AAAAAAAAAyE/qnaLNkL-I8U/s1600/dark+elf+crossbow.JPG)
Finally the last new thing to be finished are a selection of chaos characters to be used in various strange monster encounters. Lots of flavor and variety in these one which is always fun to paint.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-47UfIdVXvnk/UruJeSxlnZI/AAAAAAAAAyI/_igV8PH-qeM/s640/chaos+champions.JPG (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-47UfIdVXvnk/UruJeSxlnZI/AAAAAAAAAyI/_igV8PH-qeM/s1600/chaos+champions.JPG)
As for the unposted old photos there are a ton! Here goes:

Needed a few beastmen characters on some entries so of course reaper provides.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EbTL2q1hvJ0/UruKLoWEepI/AAAAAAAAAzI/CFgnhP_vock/s640/beastmen+characters.jpg (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EbTL2q1hvJ0/UruKLoWEepI/AAAAAAAAAzI/CFgnhP_vock/s1600/beastmen+characters.jpg)
The chimera is from reaper as the new GW one is WAY to big to fit in the dungeon as a normal large monster.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bFABEjPt0Lk/UruKOO-CH4I/AAAAAAAAAzQ/S2aWa4-xh-c/s640/chimera.jpg (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bFABEjPt0Lk/UruKOO-CH4I/AAAAAAAAAzQ/S2aWa4-xh-c/s1600/chimera.jpg)
Goblin characters are some of the most fun models to paint.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9JSvAYgPNz4/UruKEYHAbhI/AAAAAAAAAyg/Se5uBINT8Mw/s640/Goblin+Characters.jpg (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9JSvAYgPNz4/UruKEYHAbhI/AAAAAAAAAyg/Se5uBINT8Mw/s1600/Goblin+Characters.jpg)

The gorgons are from reaper and in spite of the mono-pose they work well.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-whpvsekVPxg/UruKS4wBWAI/AAAAAAAAAzk/BhSF3S5pxJE/s640/gorgons.jpg (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-whpvsekVPxg/UruKS4wBWAI/AAAAAAAAAzk/BhSF3S5pxJE/s1600/gorgons.jpg)

The bull god incarnate in the great taurus:

Still more photos to go:

The reaper griffon is a wonderful model nice and easy to paint and a classic pose.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WO7NWs74Ymc/UruKYQLkzkI/AAAAAAAAAzw/l2fYaPhbvaQ/s640/griffon.jpg (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WO7NWs74Ymc/UruKYQLkzkI/AAAAAAAAAzw/l2fYaPhbvaQ/s1600/griffon.jpg)

Another once hard to find model the lamasu. Of course now GW has them back up for sale at prices that nearly match what I paid on ebay for them....

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JcdZjpGpx3g/UruKYXWXBSI/AAAAAAAAAz0/dm27dVpVzqs/s640/lamasu.jpg (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JcdZjpGpx3g/UruKYXWXBSI/AAAAAAAAAz0/dm27dVpVzqs/s1600/lamasu.jpg)

An old classic liche model.

After playing dark souls I decided the manticore needed to be white :)

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hT0h-X3r50c/UruKfeEq_vI/AAAAAAAAA0M/hn0TMbiTF34/s640/manticore.jpg (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hT0h-X3r50c/UruKfeEq_vI/AAAAAAAAA0M/hn0TMbiTF34/s1600/manticore.jpg)

I love this reaper minotaur character and I only had to touch up and shade the pre paint work that it came with as its one of the legend rubber models.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-p5163ZU7vc4/UruKEg5CiII/AAAAAAAAAyo/cGQj6iaCFgo/s640/Minotaur+character.jpg (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-p5163ZU7vc4/UruKEg5CiII/AAAAAAAAAyo/cGQj6iaCFgo/s1600/Minotaur+character.jpg)

I wish I had waited to paint this model as its the necromancer from avatars of war. Not sure I really did it much justice...

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZA08TnhuRv8/UruKfXVfX7I/AAAAAAAAA0U/980s1e7Hre8/s640/necromancer.jpg (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZA08TnhuRv8/UruKfXVfX7I/AAAAAAAAA0U/980s1e7Hre8/s1600/necromancer.jpg)

Poo daemons or nurglings you decide!

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5KNqvx03y_M/UruKeg0tfFI/AAAAAAAAA0I/8pM55cdqM4U/s640/nurgle+nurglings.jpg (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5KNqvx03y_M/UruKeg0tfFI/AAAAAAAAA0I/8pM55cdqM4U/s1600/nurgle+nurglings.jpg)

The rat ogres were bought off ebay and came painted however despite this I thought i'd leave the paint job on them as they aren't too bad.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wTZp16G6wjo/UruKlWrf7YI/AAAAAAAAA0g/RrOSK8D7gRA/s640/rat+ogres.jpg (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wTZp16G6wjo/UruKlWrf7YI/AAAAAAAAA0g/RrOSK8D7gRA/s1600/rat+ogres.jpg)

Some more skaven characters (so tired of painting skaven!)

And yet more skaven... so many rats!

I have several flamers in multiple colors/eras of models fun ones to paint too.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-92XJZM5zLFw/UruKJZ0CG_I/AAAAAAAAAy4/nXALsJ7ZWzk/s640/Tzeentch+Flamers.jpg (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-92XJZM5zLFw/UruKJZ0CG_I/AAAAAAAAAy4/nXALsJ7ZWzk/s1600/Tzeentch+Flamers.jpg)
And of course zombies.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ECRL1Q0RZSM/UruKvftReFI/AAAAAAAAA1Q/GlcXUods7Qg/s640/zombies.jpg (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ECRL1Q0RZSM/UruKvftReFI/AAAAAAAAA1Q/GlcXUods7Qg/s1600/zombies.jpg)

So whats next? First up is going to be a group shot which will take some work to get together but should be done soonish. After that its on to lustria!

Feels great to finally get the old world finished up!

26-12-2013, 11:19
Excellent, particularly love the effect on the chaos warrior character, with the book and the hair. :)

26-12-2013, 17:46
Mammoth update! Paintathon indeed :) goblins are good fun to paint I agree

Mental! I really like the OSL on the flaming skull warrior, it looks great! I'm struggling to motivate myself to get the paints out at the moment, but your huge progress might persuade me to at least get the camera out for some long-overdue shots...

29-12-2013, 01:02
stay away from getting paid to paint and you can eventually get any project of your own done lol!

01-01-2014, 04:35
Forgot Something!
Two things actually! First up the beastman lord which I had to paint up in a hurry:

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eY-2cXdzdrE/UsOYkpCc7_I/AAAAAAAAA3I/-5tmFVOJRsU/s640/beastman+lord.jpg (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eY-2cXdzdrE/UsOYkpCc7_I/AAAAAAAAA3I/-5tmFVOJRsU/s1600/beastman+lord.jpg)
And an older pic of the giant scorpions

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WP5acLOs_-Q/UsOYlNeT5nI/AAAAAAAAA3M/mbn2Hb3lseQ/s640/scorpions.jpg (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WP5acLOs_-Q/UsOYlNeT5nI/AAAAAAAAA3M/mbn2Hb3lseQ/s1600/scorpions.jpg)

And hey while I'm at it why not post up the rest of the older pics of all the stuff that isn't in the old world?

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eD0Iqv9TKK4/UsOYzcBXxiI/AAAAAAAAA3o/wz5S2pgoXmg/s640/crocodiles.jpg (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eD0Iqv9TKK4/UsOYzcBXxiI/AAAAAAAAA3o/wz5S2pgoXmg/s1600/crocodiles.jpg)

This bad boy of metal (literally all metal) is the dragon turtle and is certainly a deadly weapon if hurled.

Gian snake looks like something out of some kind of disney movie....

And to break up the posts due to picture limits here is the continuation!

Kairos because you know he'll be making an appearance at some point later in our games...

This monkey is an all metal p65 miniature. After priming him he fell on concrete and the concrete lost sporting a nice chip after the monkey touched down. That is a 60mm base on him to give you an idea of scale.

And what lustrian jungle would be complete without snakes?

Here's to hoping for time to get that group shot done soon!

02-01-2014, 12:03
Wow - what an update!

Not only lots done, but very nicely done too. Kudos to you good sir! Can I ask where the crocs are from - I recognize the middle one with the mouth open as being a reaper one, what about the other two?

02-01-2014, 17:15
Thanks again!

All the crocs are from reaper not sure if any of them are oop now or not but they did exist at one time for sure!

Excellent stuff!

Stick a Fork In It! (http://bobthebobish.blogspot.com/2014/01/stick-fork-in-it.html)
So here is the WHQ Old World collection of monsters and of course our poor warriors destined to fight them. This is without a doubt the biggest and most daunting project I have ever embarked upon. Now after more than five years the monster table is complete and painted! Unfortunately a camera capable of making a crystal clear group shot eludes me but hey why not post it anyways right?

Its been a heck of a long road, heck just setting up the picture took plenty of time, but I'm glad to have the old world done once and for all. As always thanks for all the replies and comments and such. I'll start churning out minis for the sewers and Lustria expansions soon!

Wow! That is a scary huge amount of painted models. Congratulations! This is the greatest thing I have seen on the internet so far this year.

06-01-2014, 14:42
Congratulations on a fantastic collection of figures.:D
I'm now a little bit daunted as I'm hoping to do something similar.
Head down and carry on :)

Is that all you've done in 5 years? Pffft.

*Sobs and starts self harming

Seriously - very impressive! That is an amazing collection - Fantastic!

07-01-2014, 06:51
OH my WOW.

That is a lot of hard work. You should be very proud. Intimidating, is what I'd call it.

09-01-2014, 06:38
Thanks for all the kind words everyone! It's always been a bit of a gaming holy grail of mine to finish this so I guess now its on to Lustria!

10-01-2014, 08:40
Very, very, very impressive collection!!

11-01-2014, 22:03
Excellent work. Congratulations on reaching your goal.

Where next?

12-01-2014, 06:55
Up next is work on sewers and Lustria monsters so who knows how long that will take! Just finished putting a doomwheel together tonight so that might be up first.

12-01-2014, 22:03
Amazing, I wish I had your dedication.
And your collection.
And some Quest players :(

25-01-2014, 16:52
Just a few WHQ models today. First up is the Banebeasts Talos model which I will be using in or Norsca exploration as a titan. I need to redo the base but the paint job is finished at least. This guy is huge and I highly recommend Banebeast's line they are amazing.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-varxQe_jiOk/UuPrGe1R3kI/AAAAAAAABBk/QZq7PayZZdE/s1600/DSCF0857.JPG (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-varxQe_jiOk/UuPrGe1R3kI/AAAAAAAABBk/QZq7PayZZdE/s1600/DSCF0857.JPG)

The fire elemental however will be used for a high elven mage character I've been working on as a summon-able monster.

Some incredible stuff here Bob, heavens, the wide shots of the whole collection are mind blowing. The amount of effort you've put in and quality of painting is a great testament to your love of the game; very humbling.

28-01-2014, 14:09
Are you gonna use it as an incarnate elemental of fire from the Monstrous Arcanum book? And is it made of clear plastic, or does it just look that way because of your phenomenal paint job? If so,

Titan is sweet too! Glad to see you haven't stopped painting because you completed your collection. The thought that you might made me sad. :(

28-01-2014, 16:43
And is it made of clear plastic, or does it just look that way because of your phenomenal paint job? If so,

this! WOW

29-01-2014, 21:57
Without wanting to rain on bob's parade the fire elemental is indeed clear plastic (unless he bought the metal version and painted it like that - in which case )

Lovely looking Talos, the glowing eyes are really well done and he looks particularly menacing. I love the Banebeasts range, Mierce are putting GW to shame!

Keep up the good work!

30-01-2014, 03:04
Indeed the model is certainly clear! I wouldn't have left it as such normally but for another commission project someone wanted the new heroclix phoenix shards dial to be improved upon and at the same time left somewhat clear. The fire elemental is the practice piece (the shard is in my blog on the sig if you're curious). Basically it is just a simple oil wash of bright yellow with red and then dark brownish red dry brushed over it really simple effect although it made my paint area stink of oils for some time :)

The mierce line and several other lines are very much putting GW to shame. My favorite miniatures look as if they have some real character and love put into them and mierce usually hits it out of the park!

03-02-2014, 04:39
Finished up the skaven doomwheel which was a very intimidating miniature! Definitely do not try to paint this after assembling...

After a brief bout with a cold I'm back to the old painting block and working on some warhammer quest!

Although only really making an appearance on a later to be made epic level quest I just had to paint up Be'lakor since he is a beautiful model.
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-19Dm4fPkTqQ/Uw7WJOf6w6I/AAAAAAAABEw/1kSvz5AzLiw/s1600/belakor.JPG (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-19Dm4fPkTqQ/Uw7WJOf6w6I/AAAAAAAABEw/1kSvz5AzLiw/s1600/belakor.JPG)

To add some fun to the sewers here is my dread maw which is just a repaint of an old D&D mini. Due to price and size issues I won't be using the forgeworld one.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JjhSUePb5Eo/Uw7WJ6vt3vI/AAAAAAAABE4/pm0r8mJTj3M/s1600/dread+maw.JPG (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JjhSUePb5Eo/Uw7WJ6vt3vI/AAAAAAAABE4/pm0r8mJTj3M/s1600/dread+maw.JPG)
And finally I picked up this absolute gem of a model that was just recently released. Haven't had this much fun painting a piece in a long time! Of course this means my old slayer model is retired...

Okay, that Dwarf is seriously WHQst hero material.. nice work on the colours too! :)

16-03-2014, 23:11
The biggest collection of warhammer quest monsters ive ever seen outside of GW themselves. outstanding stuff!!!!!

09-04-2014, 17:16
Been a long time since I've posted an update for this and sadly it may be longer still before I get back to this project. We have a new schedule at work that has forced me to disband our quest group for the forceable future. Due to my ever increasing commission work requests I tend to spend my personal painting time on things that will actually hit the table which means WHQ is out of the loop now.

I will be posting the current state of my rules work including bestiary for Cathay, Nippon, Norsca etc however all of those expansions are far from finished. I'm only bothering to put them out there because I don't know when or if I'll be able to return to Quest. Without a group to play with and the microscopic niche desire for revised/expanded rules in quest I just don't see a point to working on quest without being able to play it all.

Thanks for all the great comments along the way and I hope others get to continue to play this awesome game! If you want to keep up with my painting check out the blog in my sig or I'm sure I'll post up a few things in the painting sections!

13-07-2014, 04:59
It has been a while but I've managed to snag a new house that happens to have plenty of space for a gaming room. This means quest is back on the table and I'm slowly painting through some new stuff! First up is a miniature that didn't 'need' to be added but certainly was fun...

The Exalted Greater Daemon of Nurgle in all his pustular goodness!

This was a stunning miniature to paint from Ultraforge and a ton of fun. As a side not if anyone could tell me how to shrink the images to be a more reasonable size on warseer's forums that would be amazing!

13-07-2014, 10:45
Stunning stuff Bob, very very nasty indeed. Its a good question, I'd like to know how pictures can be altered too?

13-07-2014, 12:08
I don't think you can - I always alter them in photobucket first.

Nice GUO, I have that model and was umming and Ahhing about painting him next even though I haven't long finished my FW one. Yours looks really good, particularly the blood and his glowing eyes. Well done!

14-07-2014, 00:34
Phenomenal work on some great sculpts. Don't scare me like that, talking about "not painting" for a while!

Personally I think the size of the images you're posting are perfect the way they are. It bothers me when I have to "click through" the mini versions to get the the full size ones. But I use picasa to make smaller versions of mine before I upload them.

18-10-2014, 12:58
wow. inspiring. im on a similar quest. dug out my old whq box after 20 years in the cupboard and decided it was time to attack it. looking at all the work you have done is daunting. especially since I haven't finished even 15% of the boxed minis.

I will be trawling back through the post to see where you got some of the cool sculpts from.

Genuinely impressed.

Finally done with all the Commission back log and out of the business too! To celebrate here is the Exalted Bloodthirster of Khorne ready to end any party that dares roll him up...

Where is this model from? It's absolutely fantastic.

04-03-2015, 23:36
Bob. Are you using an airbrush for any of your work or just blending with a brush. Either way your transitions look good.

06-03-2015, 16:56
The dragon model is a very old Teronus the ultimate dragon from grenadier models (so old its more of a lead than pewter mix!).

As far as airbrush v brushwork is concerned I do a lot of work with both really. For OSL and large surfaces I like the airbrush a lot as it simply speeds up the process but for the smaller details I'm not quite comfortable enough with the airbrush so I do more traditional work. I've got a huge amount of stuff to add in to this thread now but I have to find time to take pics! I'll just have to make the dog do it...

11-03-2015, 15:12
Just one quick thing to show off. Most of my painting is going to a chaos dwarf army I'm working for to take to a GT. That said I've also been working on expanding the little guys role in quest so look forward to some new rules for all these shiny models.

Normally this army would be well beyond my means however with a little ingenuity and scratch building most of it is hillariously cheap! As an example here's a toy bull commandeered as a bale taurus!

Flames were all green stuff, chains were just good old fashioned chains and the wings are some spare bloodthirster wings that a friend had lying around after a skarbrand conversion so overall this cost about $15 to make since I already had plenty of regular dwarves to chaosify.

11-03-2015, 22:35
Love it Bob, just my sort of thing. Does the job, looks great and is cheap as chips. Hats off to you fella, look forward to seeing the rest. :)

17-04-2015, 19:39
Hey the chaos dwarf army is finally ready for tournament play so now I can go on to paint 'smaller' batches of things! That said I think these will make nice additions to quest especially since I'm working on a mini expansion utilizing an expanded chaos dwarf bestiary...

Up first is the Kadai Destroyer. He will definitely be the greater daemon level entry for quest. His rules are suitably nasty and on top of that he's a tough little bugger to get rid of for sure. Anyone who has faced on one the tabletop can back up the horror stories of these guys soloing units. Mine is a Mcfarlane Children of the Zodiac figure with added fire and a full repaint. Anyone who hasn't checked out their line of toys is missing out as they have a ton of suitable giant models.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kNoR9M1dzEs/VTEP0WDsWMI/AAAAAAAABe4/yfVzpynj-X0/s1600/fireglaive%2B2.JPG (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kNoR9M1dzEs/VTEP0WDsWMI/AAAAAAAABe4/yfVzpynj-X0/s1600/fireglaive%2B2.JPG)

And here are the fireglaives. Like blunderbusses they are nasty at range but unlike them they are also a pain up close. There is a nice half and half mix of the Russian Alternative Chaos Dwarves in here. Those little metal guys are AMAZING for the price they more than give forgeworld a run for their money and you can find them about $30 per 10 dwarves on their ebay store.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0gs705EdzY8/VTEP1bV7WBI/AAAAAAAABfE/_LwR_kaMOsQ/s1600/fireglaives%2B1.JPG (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0gs705EdzY8/VTEP1bV7WBI/AAAAAAAABfE/_LwR_kaMOsQ/s1600/fireglaives%2B1.JPG)

My Hobgoblin cavalry are simple goblin wolf riders with chaos hounds underneath. A very crude saddle was made out of green stuff. The chaos hounds make them look way more fierce than they actually are!

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HVWPVrm6Eeg/VTEP101aT9I/AAAAAAAABfI/FRZHnyeHZ28/s1600/hobo%2Bcav.JPG (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HVWPVrm6Eeg/VTEP101aT9I/AAAAAAAABfI/FRZHnyeHZ28/s1600/hobo%2Bcav.JPG)

And if you have basic dudes you need a leader dude right? Here's a Hobo Khan:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B5qwebAVUbE/VTEP2MNEAxI/AAAAAAAABfM/ASpEeVeTtMA/s1600/hobo%2Bkhan.JPG (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B5qwebAVUbE/VTEP2MNEAxI/AAAAAAAABfM/ASpEeVeTtMA/s1600/hobo%2Bkhan.JPG)

So way earlier on this thread I have my hobgoblins I use for Quest made out of Reaper goblins. I'm still going to use those for quest for sure but I wanted to buy up at least 40 hobos on foot for my chaos dwarf army and needed an easier source. I went to mantic and bough their goblins however I was less than happy with the models. They really do lack a lot of detail and seem like a horribly rushed product. This was made more unfortunate since normally I really like mantics models and find them fun to paint. But if you are looking for cheep hobgoblin substitutes they are only about $1 per hobo so you get what you pay for right?

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vrjgoJhImfU/VTEP2YCHYxI/AAAAAAAABfU/JBY90ESiTwE/s1600/hobos.JPG (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vrjgoJhImfU/VTEP2YCHYxI/AAAAAAAABfU/JBY90ESiTwE/s1600/hobos.JPG)

Next up are the infernal guard. For my rules I'm keeping the chaos dwarves as a normal entry but adding a set of infernal guard as seperate types to encounter.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hzvEpFOVxIM/VTEP2xl2eoI/AAAAAAAABfc/IIPzqHVgBG4/s1600/infernal%2Bguard%2B1.JPG (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hzvEpFOVxIM/VTEP2xl2eoI/AAAAAAAABfc/IIPzqHVgBG4/s1600/infernal%2Bguard%2B1.JPG)

Of course good old forgeworld Infernal Guard. This is one of the few fully 'official' units in the whole army (the unpainted bull centaurs being the only other one).

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-K1FUqL8ioi8/VTEP3Vg-QmI/AAAAAAAABfo/ExqOSKwVyws/s1600/infernal%2Bguard%2B2.JPG (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-K1FUqL8ioi8/VTEP3Vg-QmI/AAAAAAAABfo/ExqOSKwVyws/s1600/infernal%2Bguard%2B2.JPG)

Still have some Kadai Fireborn to take pics of. Overall for all the questors out there make sure to check out alternatives for chaos dwarves it makes things WAY cheaper. Those russian alternative dwarves make things not only cheaper but IMO look WAY better than anything forgeworld or GW came up with! They even do great looking hobgoblins (yes I'm kicking myself for not grabbing those instead).

Shas'El Tael
22-04-2015, 07:54
Loving these FW Chaos Dwarves. The hobgoblins are a good idea; I had wondered about Mantic goblins, pity about the detail :(

24-04-2015, 15:10
Ya unfortunately this time I have to send people to another source (totally recommend Russian Alternative on ebay) for the hobos. I actually had to prime them white and run a sepia wash over each one just to see where certain parts of the mini were detail wise. Still they paint up 'ok' but not up to Mantic's usual quality.

29-05-2015, 14:40
These doors have been sitting lonely and drybrushed in shades of grey for too long so I figured why not add some fun to them? Should liven up the quest boards that's for sure!

It's true I haven't made a lot of progress on new rules lately still haven't managed to work up the free time for it or ambition honestly. Maybe soon though who knows!

29-05-2015, 15:42
Hmmmm after looking at your doorways. My grey drybrushed doors do look bland now. Will have to spice mine up. Think I'll put it on my to do list.:)

Nice update. I like the suble colours on the stalactites/mites (I always mix them up) - did you airbrush them?
