View Full Version : BFG: Old Imperial warship class names ?

I don't know if there was ever fluff for this, but does anyone know if GW ever put out names for what the Imperium used to call their ships, which now comprise of the Chaos fleet ? The Chaos names have obviously Chaotic sounding names so it seems as though they have been renamed after the Heresy.

Hmm... Individual chaos ships get renamed when they turn to chaos, but I've never heard of an entire class of ship getting renamed.

Aside from the escort vessels, none of the chaos class names seem particularly "chaosy" to me. Dark certainly, but most of the imperial ship classes don't have cheery names either. Hades doesn't seem any more evil than Tyrant. Remember, these are/were the warships of an empire that thinks nothing of naming planets "Armageddon"...

Names like "idolater" and "infidel" I agree do cross the line, but those classes were never in imperial service.

Yep, this is always something that's annoyed me a bit.

The class names (Murder, Slaughter, etc) are at some point specifically mentioned as being the Imperial class names as well I think. The best excuse I've heard is that these classes were commissioned during the Age of Apostasy - you can just about see High Lord Vandire coming up with those names.

A lot of the chaos ships are Dark age, think the Styx is specifically mentioned. They have pretty much uniformly turned to chaos due to weak points in the geller field and other pecularities like warp drive harmonics.
Other than one or two in reserve fleets, that have likely been so serverly refitted and canabolised that they barely count as the original class any more, almost all examples of the class are found in chaos ships - hence the renaming.
