i am a long time watcher of these forums and love the stuff in here.
i missed out on quest in 1994 as i had a relatively new advanced heroquest and i was playing more warhammer and collecting armies rather than skirmish games.

my family are not that keen on GW but the do like Fable and board games. which i think is WHQ!

now it is a little expensive to buy at the moment. i don't feel like dumping 200 on a board game, that nobody likes.

so i have decided to make it for as cheap as possible.

first stop was to get the files. there is plenty of resource out there. i have printed off as much as i can and started on the board sections:

and the character cards:

i have printed off the sections on the work printer, and glued the cut out to old birthday cards and think cardboard boxes. so far it has cost me about 3 for pritstik and i have got some thin card for the card deck.

i am missing the spell cards so if anyone is kind enough to donate them to me i would be grateful.

i will look for deals on the basic monster set first. the hard bit seems to be the small creatures and doors. i have seen the article on making doors in these forums so they can be done for free.

my aim is to make this for <40 (the cost of a board game) so if anyone can help please let me know.

hopefully i can get regular updates on this.

Always great to see another WHQ plog pop up, especially someone who thinks along the same lines as me - make it a board game, make it cheap! I put my set together from scans but I mounted on thin card and used the work laminator to get them plastic coated. They spin more and can be a little slippy, but I can't rip or mark them.

How are you sourcing the models? New stuff, old stuff re-purposed, or cross-use (as in, just grab your Fantasy army boxes and take out what you need when you need it)? Mantic are good for basic monsters as they sell good models for a cheap price, especially if you can get them 2nd hand. Bats I sorted with the GW bat swarm with each bat individually based. Snotlings are still an issue, especially as I know I have a bag of them somewhere, I just can't place my hands on them! If you find a good replacement for the GW versions, I'd love to hear about it!

Can't wait to see how you do.

If you find a good replacement for the GW versions, I'd love to hear about it!

i used 15mm goblins (http://buildyourimagination.co.uk/minis/gallery/miniquest/23-snotlings.jpg) form Ral Partha (http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/demonworld-goblins-c-76_100.html).
there's always Snorklings (http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/our-ranges/goblinaid/), fun snotlings sculpted by Kev Adams (responsible for WHQuests greenskins) as they're Snotling sized!

thanks for all the messages guys. nice to see we have a supportive community.

1. i have cut out more board sections (T junctions, stairs and passage ways complete)
2. i stuck all the scenery markers to card, they now need to be trimmed
3. tea break searching i found a dropbox account with a big zip file and the spell cards!
4. looking in to miniature costs and even going by ebay prices and some of the other option people have suggested i am still looking at 100 for the miniatures, not including doorways!

with this cost restriction i am going to see if i can fine stuff at my parents house to use. i know i have the goblins (archers and spears from 4th ed warhammer box set) and maybe a wizard and dwarf but that would be it.

a quick overview of what would be needed

Warriors (Characters)
Barbarian
Dwarf
Elf
Wizard
Monster minis
3 Minotaurs
6 Orc Warriors
6 Orc Archers
6 Goblin Spearmen
6 Night Goblin Archers
12 Snotlings
12 Skaven
12 Giant Spiders
12 Giant Bats
12 Giant Rats
10 Dungeon Doorways

i am starting to think a bit that that if i could get a box for 150 then it would be a good deal...????

it goes to show how good a deal the original box set was

i think the expansions (Lair and CoT) are not worth the spending as you only need a few models but hat can be for a later date.

this could be a harder task than first imagined

Im putting together a set http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?338220-Gav-s-Mini-WHQuest-Quest]using ( [url) halflings[/url] and am sure if you avoid gw retail prices the cost drops down!
Things like ebay or facebook tradeing groups (will link later!) can hrlp grab smaller collections of miniatures :-)

Actually, the critters (bats, rats, etc) are the hardest models to get hold of. There have been umpteen editions of plastic orcs/goblins/skaven over the years, and there a whole host of hero models to choose from, but you're probably looking at alternative makers and metal models for those bats and spiders!

Having said that, your project looks awesome so far!

One tip (originally from forum member Necanthrope) - get a black marker pen and go over the edges of all your boards. It instantly makes them look 10x better. I tried this, and it is true.

a little update.

i have now completed the corridors, T-Junctions and all the in game counters (traps/pits etc)

and

as i mentioned in my earlier post the cost of getting all the miniatures to play this game is quite a lot. even after considering ebay and alternate ones.

1. i really like GW fantasy stuff (not alternates look the same and i don't like them)
2. i would prefer not to use the single pose models

i just mised out on a copy of quest yesterday for 67! a little gutted.

i am watching a few others and i am thinking that 100 would get me all the models and the cards as well.

i am out if card at the moment so i have a natural pause in the build.

if i can get a hold of a box set for 100 then i may just go for that

Have you tried the board game geek market place?
The prices there are generally more reasonable than eBay, and you know you're getting a copy from a fellow player and not just a scalper. If you have trouble finding everything you need, I have just got a second quest set, so I have a few odds and ends I could let you have in trade.

This looks great! Am trying to do the same thing with the dungeon tiles, where did you find the objective rooms ? Ice found quite a few pictures online but struggled to find a complete set of rooms.
