View Full Version : WIP 4*6 modular Gameboard

19-06-2006, 21:20
My friend and I started building a modular gaming board consistent of 30cm by 30cm blocks, to create a gaming table that can be altered or even completely changed by using themed blocks

Pictures are to follow :

Overview of a half table, again half filled with tiles, a lot more are already empty, even more need the wood on it (but need sawing first, to use the depth), just a picture for the general idea.

Zoomed in view on my evil church, which has been cursed by some friends and loved by others. (maybe because my sisters which like to hide in it) now on its new home.

The bottom side of one of the tiles...

A view of my evil assistant. Or at least he thinks!
(note the pile of tiles next to him)

(and yes, I know, the dark angel rhino thing, doesnt look to good at the moment, but its all in my mind!)

Nice!!! I will be keeping an eye on this thread!! What type of wood is that? it looks like paneling..

19-06-2006, 21:39

Actually Ice, your table was the inspiration for us ;)

Our idea for forests is to have trees on 25mm bases, and to saw out 25mm holes in which the bases fit. So we can remove the forest, for models to move through

19-06-2006, 21:39
it is called triplex in the netherlands, three thin layers of wood and they did saw it pretty cheaply (and good) at the DIY

19-06-2006, 21:44
Oh..... Well thanks for the compliment guys I hope that your table turns out great, and if you have any questions on what I am doing on mine feel free to pm me.
That triplex from the way you decribed it sounds like the wall paneling we have here in the US. Pretty strong stuff, should make your board very durable. Thumbs up and good luck.

should look good!

Kudos on your evil assistant... the best kind!

will be watching this.

Woohoo, finally a new table to play on!

Would be an honour to litter this field with fallen dark angel bodies en heads of traitor sisters!!

The imperial firebase I started on a few days ago

Playing with powertools!

Playing with more powertools!
The round tools are for tree's which will be based on normal gw bases, so you can remove them with ease when you want to put troops in the forest.

The result of a few hours powertooling.

that backing you have on the fire base, whay dont you sandwich some window screen in between ther for a mesh or expanded metal look.

22-06-2006, 20:27
The result of an evening of which didn't even cost me any fingers!
(somehow my cat likes to get on the pictures, he was sleeping right thru the drilling and sawing, but awoke at the moment I grabbed the digicam)

Was considering that, but the landing platform still is very much WIP, I did only put it there to show that it is actually leaning over to the other tile, which I thought is pretty nifty. ;)

We now have enough stuff for 40 tiles, with only 24 showing, so there will be enough variation with more buildings, more roads and some canalized river in it. Some of those using the depth of the foam under it

22-06-2006, 22:20
Looking good guys!!

23-06-2006, 05:08
Next step is to "dig out" the river from the foam, attatch the river/road and forrest tiles, and use texture paint to paint the whole thing :)

Ps, the cat's tongue is hanging from his mouth :D

23-06-2006, 05:30
Very nice.:D Inspirational!

here is a good tool for that:
and they work sweet.

any updates to these boards? i was searching through some subscribed threads for something else but seen this one and still interesated in seeing how it is/has progressed.

06-07-2006, 19:20
We're still working on it, but temperatures and no spare time kinda get in the way unfortunatly. We're still very much inspired and trying to get to it, thank you for your patience ;)

06-07-2006, 20:05
Ok we did some work today, but it was to hot for a lot of hard work...

06-07-2006, 21:48
The table looks promissing! Though I'd rather you supported your team (Oranje I presume) than do the table:D .

any updates to these boards? i was searching through some subscribed threads for something else but seen this one and still interesated in seeing how it is/has progressed.

I have already mentioned it elswhere, but noone answered. Tables with the Cities of Death being released, deserve a subcathegory in Modeling and painting. That would make it easier to browse. Anyone thinks the same?

i think terrain needs a seperate category in its own right. i'll start a thread on it and see what response i get.

hope you fellas see it and reply to it voicing opinions.

Ok, at last after some more important stuff, having vacation fun with gf, we at least got some work done again...

(the tiles look a little bit off alignment at the pictures, but that is because it wasn't placed really good)

30-07-2006, 22:37
That board's looking excellent!

I've always fancied a sculpted board, but my skills aren't up to it, and neither is my wallet. We just use a sheet a plywood with moveable terrain pieces. Hey, it works at least!

i like the bridge alot

01-08-2006, 01:13
Yeah me too!! I'm gonna have to get some of those for mine!!

I like the bridge too. I am interested to see how the forest design you guys devised works out.

01-08-2006, 10:55
The bridge is from pegasus hobbies and was about 13 euro around here. I bought it at my local hobby shop (with model tanks and cars and stuff). You will get another center part in the box, but that did not fit on the tile (which is now used in still very unfinished repair facility).

I really hope the forests will work out as good as we thought out, no more unstable forests!

Looking good sofar!

What is the structure made from the two styrafoam domes?

The way it opens makes it look like the entrance to habs or something, but then it also kinda looks like missile silos, or a bunker, or maybe something else?

Just curious.

02-08-2006, 07:50
It is supposed to look like some kind of old storage tank, of which one did blow up. There is plenty of rubble around now, maybe I should make a new close up picture of it soon. I will try to fill it up with green ooze or something like that later in the painting/construction process

Ah, in that case I suggest making it look a little more jaggedy around the edges, right now it looks really clean like it just opened up.

Also, do you know the meat grinder trick for rubble? It works like a charm, and rather than hunting around all over you can find one pretty easily right here (http://www.sausagemaker.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=41). I bought the cheapest one, and it works great.

03-08-2006, 19:58
A small update, to show the trees I have made and show off a lot of the tiles together...

03-08-2006, 19:59
I really hate my camera, only works nicely with daylight... Here is a closeup of the little bit of work done to the chemicals storage. I still make my rubble the old fashioned manner (with plyers that is)

(darn the gods of blur!)

03-08-2006, 20:06
Oh I so much envy you for this! :p
Looks wonderful.
I'll keep my eye on this thread!

04-08-2006, 02:55
looking good, just make sure you get all the woodgrain sealed and covered good and cover up that forsaken cardboard.

05-03-2007, 20:57
I did continue on this project ;) Here are some images of the still very WIP tiles

You now, if the trenches were in a desert/ash waste theme with a few bits of spikes sticking out the top and barbed wire it would look just like the first few levels of firewarrior.

I think what you call trenches are actually canals.

I recommend gluing washers in the tree holes and placing magnets in the bases the trees are on. I don't know if you've already thought about that, but it would solve any balance problems.
