View Full Version : Black Library books that advance this edition's background?

So with this edition of 40k, there's been a very deliberate attempt to shift the setting forward a little, keeping most things the same but shifting them on in time just a little bit.
My question is, outside of the main army books, what Black Library books have advanced the setting so far? I can think most prominently of one of Gav Thorpe's eldar novels that deal with the Eldar, post the events of Eye of the Storm, but what else? And do they do it in ways that are satisfying?

Devastation of Baal (The story of how the Blood Angels needed Primaris Marines)
Ashes of Prospero (The story of how the Space Wolves got a load of Heresy-era toys)
Crusade & Other Stories (The other stories are recycled from elsewhere)
Dark Imperium (The story of how the Ultramarines got their Primaris Marines)
War of Secrets (The story of how the Dark Angels got their Primaris marines)
Imperator: Wrath of the Omnissiah (with Cassus Belli in it, there's no way this can suck, right*?)
Shroud of Night (The story of the Alpha Legion being sneaky)
The only one I've actually read is
Watchers of the Throne: The Emperor's Legion (The story of how the Custodes and Sisters of Silence became playable factions)
It's very good indeed. I'd recommend it.
(Even if the Custodes on the cover have the wrong colour helmet plumes...)
*Flashbacks of Cardinal Boras featuring in Priests of Mars :(
Why McNeill, why..?

Devastation of Baal and Dante are both great reads and deal with events taking place in 8th (tho the former more heavily so).

Basically any book by Guy halye in 2018-2019 covers 9th edition 40k, i suggest starting off with Dark Imperium and moving to some of his ork based books. You should be A-Okay if you read those.
