View Full Version : New to 40K - where to start in the background?

I've received the 8th edition rulebook for my birthday, so after twenty years of nothing but Warhammer Fantasy I guess I'll be finally making the leap to the other system.
Background is what kept me into Warhammer when my gaming group slowly ran out of people, so through the background I hope to further fuel my interest in 40K.
The good thing is, there's loads of background. The bad thing is, there's loads of background

Where to begin?
I have the 8th edition rulebook, as well as that of 4th edition.
I also have the 4th edition Necron and Imperial Guard codices.

I haven't decided yet which army I'll play but it will be Tau, Imperial Guard, Orks or Necrons (the latter two leaning closest to my Orcs and Undead from fantasy I guess).

Can someone point me in the right direction?

I'd go for some of the old Black Library anthologies
Let The Galaxy Burn (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Let-Galaxy-Burn-Heroism-Warhammer/dp/1844163423/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1528741810&sr=8-1&keywords=let+the+galaxy+burn)
Planetkill (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Planetkill-Warhammer-000-Lindsey-Priestley/dp/1844165507/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1528742024&sr=1-1&keywords=planetkill)*
What Price Victory (https://www.amazon.co.uk/What-Price-Victory-Warhammer-Stories/dp/1844160777/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1528742521&sr=1-1&keywords=what+price+victory)
Deathwing (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Deathwing-Warhammer-40-000-stories/dp/1841541540/ref=pd_cp_14_4?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=1841541540&pd_rd_r=4541b4b7-6da7-11e8-b50d-2bb3840ad137&pd_rd_w=LmgH8&pd_rd_wg=kqqeY&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_p=3262852920272843952&pf_rd_r=KEZFNSBAEDR1X3GXBBVX&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=KEZFNSBAEDR1X3GXBBVX)
Crucible of War

They're mostly 2nd/3rd ed. era stories. The quality can be a bit variable, but they're sufficiently inexpensive now that it doesn't really matter if there are a few duds.

*Man, searching for 'planetkill' on Amazon brings up some weird stuff. Who would have thought that there was so much sci-fi erotica out there...

Thanks :)
Can you tell me which codices have already received an update for the new edition?

All of them except for Orks, Space Wolves, and Genestealer Cults have been updated.

Most are more or less copy-pasted from the 6th/7th ed. editions in terms of background though (with some added Primaris Marines).

That's fine. We don't own any of those books :)

I'm an old 40k player (2nd ed to 6th), but haven't read anything new.

What are the best books to read to bridge my knowledge gap?

Watchers of the Throne: The Emperor's Legion is good, and covers events on Terra during the period immediately around Guilliman's return.

Dark Imperium also covers Guilliman's doings, and is apparently decent (I haven't read it personally).

Besides the events surrounding 8th edition, not a great deal of much significance has really changed with the universe.
