View Full Version : IncrediSteve's Multiphasic Project Log

15-08-2006, 19:14
This log kind of died when I lost my Camera, but I have a new one now, and will soon be jumpstarting my projects again. I'll be going for seperate threads though, all in one gets lumpy and gives away away spastic I am.

These Project logs are pretty nifty, so I've started one to help keep me painting. I recently went on a painting rampage [complete with booming FPS style commentary], and would like to keep that going. Saddly, I do not have a camera; I must borrow one each time to take pictures, but I should still be able to update with pictures at least once a week. Pictures should come as often as people want them or I have done anything worth showing. But might not last, as I'll need to get a new camera once I move within the month. Shouldn't be too long a timespan.

Ultramrines 3rd Company

Eldar Craftworld Iijkristaan

Cities of Death Modular Table and Stragems

Some woeful day I'll also get back into Guard, a small suit-heavy Tau force has always whispered to me, I don't think I'll be able to resist the power of the WAAAAAAGH! once it returns with renewed strength, and Dark Eldar would enslave my wallet if done justice. BFG got me into Chaos a bit, I don't really like all the Daemons and nastyness, but an Iron Warriors force [with clean knight-like marines, mechanized and with sleek predators, no cheesy oblits or Defilers] might make it into my smaller forces some day.

Really the only things I don't see collecting are Tyranids [and ONLY because my pal collects them and they're what I face the most] and Necrons, because they're boring and I have a grudge from all the pummelings they gave me before my pal sold them for Nids.

Battlefleet Gothic

I have every race. I'll get around to all of them at some point. The biggest core will be my 8000+ points [each!] of Imperial Navy, Chaos, and Tyranids.

Aeronautica Imperialis

Don't actually have anything yet, but you can bet my wallet I will eventually. Likely all races will be collected, much like BFG.

Epic 40,000

I'm going to get Eldar, Marines, Chaos, and Orks. Maybe Guard later.

I love the Necromunda world and rules, but find most of the models repulsive. The only stock one I like is the old "Scum with Bolt Pistols" so I'll be getting him, and the rest will be converted.

I'll have 3 or 4 gangs and lots of supporting miscellaneous characters. I'll be blatantly copying the Cultists from FIREBASE #1, making 2 gangs and some characters out of the boatloads of pieces left over from the necessary kits, and then using the FW Chaos Renegade Milita kits for the final gang. All of the Chaos symbols can be filled in with greenstuff, and then they look like an awesome ragtag group of scavengers, out to comb the wastes and other hazardous environments.

I'll get maybe 3 miniatures, just for display and to be able to say I've got every 40k specialist game there is.

Ultramarines 3rd Company

Old school painted:

Force Commander
Terminator Captain
Tech Marine
Land Speeder Typhoon/Tornado
Plastic Sgt. with combi-melta and lightning claw
Plastic Tactical Marine

These models were painted before I reached the higher level of modeling and painting skill I now have, and are kept mainly for nostalgia’s sake [plus the land speeder still comes in handy every now and then]

Middle School Painted:

5x Plastic Command Squad
5x Veterans [the 4th edition released CCW ones]
5x Tyranic War Veterans [plastic converted]
5x New Plastic Terminators

These were painted [I]just before I really got good, so they aren’t the greatest, but are still pretty decent and definitely at a gaming standard.

New School Painted:

Converted Captain
Converted Librarian
Forge World Venerable Dreadnought
10x Tactical Squad 1
10x Tactical Squad 2

These are my latest and greatest works that I’m very proud of, and will show pictures of in my next post once I get around to it. All of my new models use Forge World laser etched brass; infantry have the ever-important upside-down Omega and a squad number, while vehicles tend to be coated in as many as I can get away with.

Partially Painted

5x Scouts with bolters [Primed, 3 have UM blue added]
Razorback with Heavy Bolters [65%]
Whirlwind [75%]
Predator [35%]

6x Combat Squad
5x Assault Squad
8x Devastator Squad
5x Assault Terminator Squad
2x Pewter Tyranic War Veterans
2x Pewter Veterans with CCW [one is the Cypher, Fallen Angel model]
Terminator Chaplain

Land Raider Crusader with boatloads of Forge World gubbinz.

This is meant to be the centerpiece of my army, and is a huge project in of itself. I don’t want to start it until at least half of my other stuff that needs to be done is finished. All the pinning, dremeling, sanding, and swearing that’s going to go into it would take too much of toll on me if most of my other stuff wasn’t already out of the way to encourage me.

5x Plastic Scouts with Sniper Rifles
5x Plastic Devastators [only if they’re made with the integrated shoulder weapons like in the concept art]
5x Terminators [to be used with rare earth magnets to fill out either of my two current squads]
Marneus Calgar with Honor guard
Terminator Librarian [if released as rumored]
Plastic Vindicator
4 Razorbacks [mainly to be used as Rhinos but with the option of Razorbacks]

These purchases are just speculation, the most extreme ends I would go to with my marines if I were to purchase more of them. But this definitely wont happen until after the Eldar are finished at the earliest.

Okay, so that was more logistics, but now on to the pictures, I promise!

any pics please?

Captain Octavius, Master of the Arsenal

http://f10.putfile.com/thumb/8/22614224473.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=3207683)
http://f10.putfile.com/thumb/8/22614230513.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=3207686)

Octavius is lightly converted from a company champion with the terminator seargent's head, using genestealer skulls for his power pack vents, shaved down Tyranid Warrior skull carapaces for his cape, and a bionic lightning claw made from the commander sprue arms and some guitar wire.

Epistolary Lavernius

http://f10.putfile.com/thumb/8/22614265145.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=3207723)

Another light conversion, made from one of the blister pack Veterans. The tip of the mace was clipped off and a thunder hammer from the assault terminators pinned on, making a long-handled thunder hammer like the Commander in Dawn of War has. The psychic hood is the iron halo from the terminator chaplain and the skull from the top of a veteran blister pack banner. The casting arm is the plastic pointing arm from the command sprue, with the bracing hand of the missle launcher attached. Finally, the loincloth from the old Dire Avengers was added to his back left hip.

http://f10.putfile.com/thumb/8/22614241245.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=3207703)

Not too much done modeling wise, just brass etches added and a hormagaunt cut in half to lie on the base, it's skull crushed by the dreadnought's foot. The gaunt is painted in my friend's Hive Fleet Eidolon scheme.

Tactical Squad 1

http://f10.putfile.com/thumb/8/22614280692.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=3207731)
http://f10.putfile.com/thumb/8/22614273479.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=3207729)
http://f10.putfile.com/thumb/8/22614271099.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=3207725)

Fairly straight forward, the squad was constructed with etches and plenty of command squad gubbinz to make them more dynamic.

15-08-2006, 19:37
Assault Terminators [unpainted]

http://f10.putfile.com/thumb/8/22614221034.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=3207678)
http://f10.putfile.com/thumb/8/22614214410.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=3207673)

Just thought I'd show a couple of these since they're the only other thing I've got pictures of ATM. They have Forge World Terminator Shoulder pads added. I just love the seargent, he's very dynamic and could just about double as a commander, and the other terminator I call the "Hell to pay" terminator, looks like he's steadily advancing forward with a vengenace under heavy fire, I think I captured the bulky look pretty well.

Whew! That's that! What do you think? Comments and Critiscisms* welcome.

*=Unless you want to critisize my choice of Ultramarines, in which case you can keep your comments to yourself :p

15-08-2006, 20:02
Good tabletop standard though i cant really say i like drybrushed Ultrasmurfs. :)

15-08-2006, 20:06
...like drybrushed Ultrasmurfs. :)

Hey, don't diss my Ultra homeboys.

Where I play they're actually somewhat unique, everybody else plays Black Templars or an Angel chapter.

As for drybrushing, my hands shake, so it's the best I can do. I throw in some highlighting and such here and there when I can.

15-08-2006, 20:11
gotta toss out the obvious tip as far as shaky hands - have you tried bracing your wrists against a table edge/counter edge/other solid thing?

15-08-2006, 20:15
Yep, I do that for parts where drybrushing doesn't work [like small details and trim] but it's not very effective when you've got entire armies to paint. Personally I like drybrushing better, the look is decent enough and it's quicker and consumes less resources. Basically I've tried both over my 7 years in the hobby, and my drybrushed armies look much better than the ones I've flatbrushed. And i'm not about to do layering. Too time consuming and takes too many paints. It already takes me 8 hours to do something like that commander.

15-08-2006, 21:29
Well, I just typed out a longish reply and then the server killed it. Silly me. Here we go again...

First of all, nothing wrong with drybrushed marines! I drybrush most of my Crimson Fists, and while not perfect, they come out to a good tabletop standard and take much less time than if I edge-highlighted everything.

I think your minis are perfectly good tabletop standard, but I think you could easily improve them with a slight modification to your technique. Hopefully it wouldn't add much time, and would still be drybrushing.

Now, I'll take this (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=3207729) photo as an example. In many places, the black basecoat shows through too much. This looks scrappy and messy, and whilst it won't hurt the look of your models from a distance, up close (as in these pictures) it really spoils the look of them.

The trick there is to use several layers of paint, getting lighter every time. Start off with regal blue, say, and coat the model very heavily, not quite a full basecoat but a very heavy drybrush. Then mix the regal blue with enchanted blue and drybrush more lightly. Keep going all the way up to Ultramarines blue, then drybrush really lightly with a lighter blue/grey to highlight the edges. This way you'll do maybe 4-5 layers of drybrushing, but the uneveness that is inherent to drybrushing won't show through as much, as the layers are closer to each other, colour-wise. Hopefully that way you can get some better results, without having to resort to non-drybrushing techniques (attached are some of my Fists: most of the work on them is done by drybrushing, with the odd bit of edge highlighting to tidy them up).

The only other criticism I have is mould lines: They show up really badly when you use drybrushing, so be extra careful of them. Mostly they're gone, but there's the odd one here and there.

Aside from that, as I said before, you have a good tabletop standard and I like your conversions. :)

15-08-2006, 21:44
I'll give that a shot on the next squad I do. I'm aware of the mold lines, I'd thought I'd gotten rid of them all, but as the pictures show that's not the case. Need to pay more attention and stretch them out instead of going on 7 hour construction binges.

Which, I nearly forgot to mention one of the most important parts of a project log, which is asking the question:

Which thing that needs done [from the inventory post] do you think I should work on next?

If no one has any suggestions I'll just roll dice, but I can try to cater each week with a photo update of what models people have requested.

15-08-2006, 21:53
There are a couple of things I'd recommend from personal experience:

1. Make every unit an addition to the army. So, the next unit you paint should be added to what you've done so far to make a good, playable list. Don't, say, paint a Land Raider then a unit of devastators as the first two units in an army, because you won't be able to play with them.

2. Alternate unit types. Don't paint 3 tactical squads or 3 predators one after another, because you'll get bored of them. Paint a squad, then a vehicle, then a character etc.

18-09-2006, 01:51
Long time no update! My new schedual has made getting things done a bit more tricky, and I'm still cameraless for the near future. But a friend stopped by, so now I can post some of my work.

Which brings me to the point of having to admit I've done a simply terrible job at keeping up with my goal. Marine wise, I've essentially not done a single thing :( . But there is still some minor fruits of my labor to show!

One day, when browsing the net, I suddonly got an uncontrollabe urge and drove down to my local Hobby Shop and bought the new Eldar Rangers. The whole ordeal went down in less than an hour; I'd broken my pace in an instant. But oh well, this is, after all, a multiphasic project log.

Here are the two rangers I've completed, still drybrushed, but this time with some of McMullet's Technique thrown in, and some ink washes.

Here are front and back pics...

Fire away, and feel perfectly free to scold me for getting so little done ;)

18-09-2006, 09:03
I like the desert camo scheme, it works very nicely (especially against that background ;)).That and the red detailing really makes the models "pop" nicely.

Now, get back to those marines!

26-10-2006, 17:56

1. I now have a camera. You can expect frequent and possibly even on-demand updates of this Project Log now. No more "Yeah, been a few weeks, here's two pictures". It's prime time now!

2. I failed my Marine goal. I am by no means going to stop on them though, they'll still be worked on piecemeal, but that means...

3. My Eldar Boxed Army arrived, along with the Battlefleet Gothic Boxed game. These are my new focus. I'm almost not sure which one to be more psyked over; The Eldar Army surely, but BFG is so incredible it's hard to choose. This is where you come in.

Anytime you want closer or more pictures of any particular object just give a shout and I’ll be happy to accommodate.

The Situation At Hand:

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/10/29813381710.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=3812351)

These are the things I’ve gotten done and are at the center of my table. The Wraithlord is my old one that was one of my first models and repainted X number of times, pay it no mind.

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/10/29813381798.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=3812350)

These are the BFG ships I’ve built. A Gothic class cruiser, a Dictator, and a Chaos Slaughter class cruiser.

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/10/29813361798.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=3812204)

Here is the Hall of Heroes rests atop my bitz box, more ancient models that I could never part with and no one would give money for anyway. That commander has killed Hundreds of Black Templar and Scarab swarms, quite legendary. The landspeeder is my oldest surviving model, and the guardsmen are all that’s left of my IG. eBay claims many a squad of the emperor’s soldiers…

Anytime you want closer or more pictures of any particular object just give a shout and I’ll be happy to accommodate.

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/10/29813361745.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=3812203)

Here's what i've gotten done on the Big LRC project. Primed all the interior parts to be painted, assembled the nasty hurricane bolters [half a dosen pins each], made a custom MM turret, dremeled the weak skulls off the sponson covers and replaced with Fw brass etches, put resin goodies on the sides, then put it all back in the box as inspiration once again left.

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/10/29813361872.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=3812206)

Here's my Tokyo Marui FN P90 TR. Just because it's hobby related and in the general vacinity of my table.

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/10/29813361782.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=3812205)

Here's the underside of my table. Deliciously messy pile of loot, is it not?

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/10/29813381821.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=3812353)

And finally here's the beloved army box. I like the sticker, "Codex Eldar Is contained within this box!" as if it is the reward at the end of some holy crusade. Classic 40k.

So what should I do next?

I'll be at work for the next 5 hours, but after that I've got friday to sunday for nonstop painting/assembling so there should be updates.

Blood runs, Anger rises, Death wakes, Work calls!

26-10-2006, 19:09
ive got the ultramarine 5th company, most of the 1st and some of the 10th - it was fun to do and always a draw at mega battles! (all them vehicles!) though sadly mine was 3rd edition - id love to do something similar with the new minis; theyre so much nicer!

good luck - ill keep an eye on this one!

01-11-2006, 04:47
More Eldar things.

This is the color scheme I'll be using for my guardians. I have a lot of old ones that are painted similar to this, but with less skill than I currently have, and were repainted in that color as well. Also had more purple and less defining black.

Aspect Warriors are mostly going to be "Ninja" colored, predominance of Black, with red details, and Dire Avengers will have blue armor plates where the Guardian has Purple.

Today my custom Farseer on a jetbike arrived in the mail. From a series of sketches, to Poland, and back to my desk, all thanks to Hortwerth (http://warseer.com/forums/member.php?u=126) of Micro Art Studio. It may not look that impressive unpainted in a poorly lit picture, but the detail is superb. Once I get the Farseer painted it'll look much more amazing. Edit- Want to extra clarify that I DID NOT sculpt this model. My skills are nought; it was a commission work for me by Hortwerth.

Here's the unprimed Micro Art Studio pic.

The things I've constructed and based, though not quite picture worthy ATM, are the 6 Howling Banshees, 6 Fire Dragons, the Autarch, and 2 Dire Avengers. In BFG I constructed a Murder Class Cruiser, and planned out an Orbital Dock that I'll make from bitz, fairly clever in my mind but we'll see what you all think.

01-11-2006, 05:08
I'll also post pics of some of my older stuff, all of which I'm debating whether or not to eBay. So you all can give them thumbs up or thumbs down, Roman Colosseum style. ;)

First up is an old style terminator captain.

My friend originally spent a lot of time painting this model just to sell on eBay. It didn't fetch a price he liked, so he pulled it and then gifted it to me as a peace offering for missed birthdays and xmasses. When it first ran though, he had a large, empty banner pole protruding from his back, which he thinks may have put some bidders off. He was always interested to know what it would fetch without the banner pole, and actually suggested I sell it to find out, so he won't be upset or anything if I do.

Next up, old Seer Council.

There may be some money to be saved by repainting some of the warlocks, but that never looks as good as fresh from the start and I really don't have time or the desire to strip them.

Next, Eldrad Ulthran

Repainted twice, nice to use in game but I think it's time for it to go.

01-11-2006, 05:16

Vyper, repainted twice and unpainted upgrades.

Falcon, same situation as the Vyper.

Fire Prism, Ditto. REALLY nice in game now, but rather ugly.

01-11-2006, 05:30

20 Guardian Defenders. Original crumby Ulthwe scheme, never repainted.

Here are the Platform Crew and the Warlock.

Another Falcon, same situation as above skimmers. Noticing a trend?

01-11-2006, 05:48

10 Howling Banshees; 6 painted, 4 primed.

An offbeat guardian squad, with a custom Warlock I made. Not exactly a legal unit anymore, but could still be used as a killteam maybe.

And finally, a full unit [2 over the new limit on guardian squads] of Guardian defenders. The best painted unit of this lot and the one I'm most inclined to keeping, but I plan to get two more battleforces additionally to the boxed army I got so I'll have plenty of [new] guardians to go around.

Models not pictured that I'm also selling are 4 thrice painted Dark Reapers and a Primed Avatar.

Also if anyone is interested in any of these you can PM me to haggle and skip the ebay process.

11-11-2006, 05:27
Partway through a statistics course today I was suddenly stricken with a strong urge to do Battle Fleet Gothic stuff. So today I primed my cruisers, built a Tyrant, and finished my first Murder Class Cruiser pictured here.

I painted the Nokomis black legion, though I'm not sure if I actually want it to be such or just have the look. You can't really see in this crumby pic but to represent the prow lances I took an extra lance turret and stuck it under the prow, looks kinda like the sensor array on an Apache Gunship. Also not sure how I want the rest of the fleet to look, whether to have them all the same scheme or suitably rag tag with multiple alignments and such.

Also have no clue whatsoever what scheme to use for my Imperial fleet either. My preferences are Grey, Grey-Blue, or Green. Obviously I'd like them near Ultramar to link into my Marine campaigns, but having them be blue could be redundant. Any Ultima segmentum fleet scheme is cool if anyone knows of any.

On a side note, please somebody reply with something! Anything! I know you're reading this, my PL gets 200+ views every time I update but no replies?:wtf:

11-11-2006, 09:00
Why hullo there!

Nice name plate on that cruiser. Much classier than the block capitals one usually sees.

Regarding the Eldar stuff you want to sell: From browsing around on eBay, it seems most people are after either pro-painted stuff (REALLY pro painted, as in display standard) or unpainted stuff. The models you have look like a good gaming standard, but I suspect you might have trouble getting a good price. If someone wants a single model to put on display, they are looking for something painted by an ex-'Eavy Metal painter or something. If they want unpainted models, they'll pay less for painted since they're buying to strip.

If you had a nice neat army (a balanced 1500 point army, say) then you could sell the lot in one lump to someone looking for an easy start.

The terminator's face looks odd (like he's been burnt or something) - if you repainted it you might get a better price for it.

Anyhoo, keep up with the painting, we do care y'know. ;)

12-11-2006, 04:03
More BFG.

This is a Defense Monitor, made 100% from bitz. Fairly straight forward construction, to make it just take two Imperial launch bays and glue them together, then two lance batteries, connect them like in the pic, fill in the gaps on the bottom and front of the lance batteries with epoxy putty. Cut the top off of a spare chaos bridge piece, and attach antennas and turrets to fill out the lance batteries. Now i'm sure you could guess that by just looking at it, but the other parts are a bit more niched, but equally available. The prow piece [which I chose as it resembles the prow of the Khar-Silim from Home World 1] and the engines come from a lascannon; specifically off of a Razorback but other lascannons have the same parts. The prow piece is circled in black below, and the engines are made from the wire cupolas whose previous location is circled in red.

Building a Mars class Battle Cruiser, the Defense Monitor shown, an Orbital dock made from bitz that isn't quite finished yet, and doing some planning on my Wraith Lord [how I'll pose it, and how I'll go about pinning it so that every possible weapon option is available] is what I've done today.

I will update tomorrow with whatever thing my mood fancies I do, assuming BF2142 or any myriad of other things don't steal all my free time.

16-11-2006, 00:30
Good news and bad news.

The good news is that my bitz Monitor and plans for other bitz ships were liked enough that I'll be doing an article of them for FIREBASE; my article should appear in issue 3.

The bad news is that that means I need quality pics, and thus have to wait until my friend can bring over his crazy more professional camera so I can take progress pics. It's driving me crazy! I wants to build them ships, and my energies have gone over to the construction side and I don't feel like painting in the meantime. So fickle am I.

Other potential bad news is that my scholarship, and the $15,000 it represents, has been revoked in error and there's a chance I might not get it back. That would be the epitome of horrible suckage. Though tomorrow will tell. Either way I'm too stressed to do anything at the moment but plan for the future.

16-11-2006, 10:58
Egads, that does (potentially) suck. Good luck!

16-11-2006, 13:56
Was able to get the scholarship back, just the result of some servitor's miscalculation. *massive sigh of relief*

Actual update with painting or construction of some sort should follow today [possibly 12 hours or so from now... eep, long day ahead...]

19-11-2006, 01:58
Last pic updates for a week, camera is going away and I'll be busy for thanksgiving [both in personal events and retail insanity], so I decided I'd post what I have of my Wraithlord as of yet.

He's pinned to high heaven, so I can use any weapon combination and his pose can altered a tiny bit, by turning the head and arming the weapons different.

I originally planned to have a large pic made up of smaller pics each of a different possible weapon combo to rub in how great pinning is and how versatile the kit is, but that would be annoying and I have 20 more pins to put in before I could do that. Plus as I said the camera goes away tomorrow so it was now or never. It doesn't look as neat without the shields, loincloths and spines on the back, but I'm leaving those off for painting.

This is the usual pose I'll go with, though I'll usually have a Starcannon and Scatter Laser.

Here's with a sword. Also quite rad. Rather different pose attained just by turning the head and attaching the sword. And remember with pinning I just pop the pieces out and swap weapons. The guardian weapon platforms, Warwalkers and Wraithlord can all share from a giant pool of weapons, and the Wave Serpents, Falcons, and Vypers have another pool to share from. Total weapons for all!

Finally, here's a direct comparison between the old and new Wraithlord.

If anyone shows Interest in the pinning process I can go into it, but it's just the technique shown in WD318 pg73.

 , I thought the new Wrathlord would be bigger, but it's just the same size as the old one. Thanks for the pic's.

26-11-2006, 21:27
Farseer. ;)

That or the Chaplain.

Yeah. I still need to venture up to your place of residence with my Nikon and snap some pictars of your new stuff. That or find a way to get you my point and shoot and teach you how to focus. :p

26-11-2006, 21:41
The fire dragons, mainly because you dont have scorpions on your list and fire dragons are the only other option id consider buying...

27-11-2006, 02:07
Well I started on the Farseer so once I get another patch of time I'll probably finish him in one or two long sittings, then the Fire Dragons will be up next.

30-11-2006, 02:30
So I'm assembling a pewter LOTR mounted model [Geez, is it multiphasic or just ADD, Steve?] when I notice that gluing the leg will create a rather noticeable and unsightly gap on the Horse's haunch. Obviously I need to fill it in with some epoxy putty. I'd been using this hand-me-down VP putty that could quite possibly be older than I am, and the last time I used it it never hardened since it's hard to tell when the colors "gray" and "slightly less gray" are well blended.

So due to the importance of this particular tangent of a side project of a secondary objective of a distraction, I bit the bolter round and went off to the shop to get some legit green stuff; $10, no big deal, right? So then I figure as long as I'm in the store in the tools section I may as well grab some sculpting tools, and a good file set to ensure the putty and models are smoothed properly. And then I notice those plastic clippers I've been meaning to get for several months and a pinning kit with some actual sized brass rod [as opposed to paper clips and coper wiring] and one of those nifty self healing exacto mats and then a gaming tape measure with both CM and IN on it, good for BFG and 40k in one, and suddenly a $10 trip turns into this:

And we quickly learn why the store owner is always so happy to see me...

on a plus note, this really cleaned up my area and allowed me to maximize even more space on my crowded table, which may or may not result in more productivity for a small amount of time and then inevitably just result in more room for unfinished projects to be distracted by and stare at, but it looks great in before and after!

Isn't that so much more clean and appealing? And the grid means I can be more obsessive compulsive than ever with my bitz, laying them out and making sure they're all lined up evenly. More Constructive, Less Productive, 'ats the way to do it.

10-12-2006, 23:57
Finally found a spare evening to paint. Since this model is to be a gift, it had priority. Always wanted to do a LOTR model on the side anyhow.

Nothing particularly special, but I enjoyed painting it and believe it will be well received. Just letting my handful of regular viewers know I'm still alive and kicking, just alive technically speaking and kicking in a very slow, dazed and awkward sense of the word ;)

16-12-2006, 04:19
Very very cool. You should buy a random squad of LotR models just to mess around with sometime. I wonder how well some of the bits for the elves would transfer to Eldar?

You said something about requesting pictures of progress. Didn't you say you were doing some stuff with your new Farseer? ;)

30-12-2006, 02:03

So I've been doing a ton of BFG stuff lately. Bought 3000 points of Imperial and Chaos stuff, and am scratch building a Tyranid hivefleet, so here are my three battleships. Plan to get some Eldar stuff at some point too, as well as Dark Eldar and Ork scratch builds on the far horizon.

Tons of scratch built transports, merchant vessels, stations, Tyranids, and painted things to come in the future.

01-01-2007, 23:10
Very very cool. Can't wait to see them painted up.

You should paint your Tyranid ships up in Bob's theme. An adaption of it anyways.

01-01-2007, 23:10
A P-90 Fancier! I use a CA M15A4 and a AK-74U myself. You may already know this, but RedWolf is really a pretty horrible retailer, as far as prices and guarantees go. I like all your minis but your ulthwe. Not a fan of that scheme. Great amount of work though, congratulations.

01-01-2007, 23:28
Yeah the Ulthwe are my old stuff being sold.

I bought the P90 from a local shop, I just do most of my gawking and wishful thinking on Redwolf.

24-01-2007, 20:59
Yeah, so like "long time no update, Steve!"

Well, I've done a lot of tinkering, and nothing really constructive of the show off to people type, so here's just a shot of my table. It sort of exploded again.

24-01-2007, 23:40
Whoah, that hive ship is great!! I want to see all the fleet

25-01-2007, 02:04
As requested, Here's some close ups and such of the Hivefleet.

Hiveship Front:

Hiveship Side:

and Hiveship Rear:

The design of it is fairly ambiguous, so as to allow for it to arguably represent any combination of weaponry. I designed the "mouth" going off the artwork and think it turned out fairly well. It's pretty easy to tell what parts I used for most of it, the mandibles are the "thumb" pieces off the top of the large 4th edition carnifex Scything talons.

[Escorts to Follow]

25-01-2007, 02:20
4 Kraken Escorts armed with Torpedoes

5 Krakens armed with Pyro Acid Batteries, and 3 with Feeder Tendrils

All of them are pretty simple. The Torpedo Krakens are made from a devourer head and the middle section of 3rd edition Scything talons.

The Pyro Acid Krakens are made with the back carapace of BFM Termagaunts [brutally chopped apart for their shells] and with Spine fists glued end to end.

The Feeder tendril squidly ones are just a flesh borer, the tubes from a devourer, and the spikes from Flesh Hooks. The beak is the tip of a BFM Termagaunt's tail.

All of them have "engine" holes drilled in the back with a pin vice for propulsion. I also had plans for Krakens armed with crushing claws by taking the fleshborer design, and chopping 3 old MC rending claw fingers and positioning them as the jaws/mandibles.

I still have to create two cruisers to complete the 1500 pt hivefleet, having a bit of trouble but for the most part I think it will involve the majority of a termagaunt's body, several weapons, and a fair amount of Green Stuff.

25-01-2007, 03:08
I am liking your nids - could you do assembly pics for some of them?

29-01-2007, 22:12
I'll post some how-to's for the 'nid escorts, I promise, it's on my to-do list.

In typical fashion, one of my models suddenly went from not painted to painted in the course of one short afternoon.

I present to you The Faith and Ardency, an Imperial Dictator class Cruiser.

The name tag is a tad lopsided despite my straightening efforts, and my lettering a bit jumbled [it looks like it says FAITH AND ARDENCY], but other than that fixable flaw I'm pretty happy with it. You can't tell in the photo but the windows are a dimly lit white [fortress gray rather]. There's also a tiny hint of moldline on the antenna but there's nothing I can do about that.

The only other issue was that I kind of want to paint caution stripes onto the angled edges of the launch bays, but my Chaos fleet will be Iron Warriors color scheme and I'm afraid it'd make them a little less unique. Thoughts anyone?

29-01-2007, 22:29
Could do 'warning' strips in a different color set (orange and black, red and white)... or have white landing lines along it.

29-01-2007, 23:29
easy and great models! My Chaos fleet want destroy yours XD

30-01-2007, 00:40
I debated white, so now I'll give it a go and see how it turns out.

As for Chaos, I'm pretty torn. I love both Imperial and Chaos ship designs, hard to say which I like better. I have 3000pts for both sides as a solution  .

30-01-2007, 01:53
Can never have to much BFG (or Epic).

30-01-2007, 23:47
Great model. I'm sitting right next to it. :P

I'll upload some pics I took of it with my Nikon D50 later on.

Can't wait to see you paint up the rest of your BFG stuff.

01-02-2007, 02:38
Just got the pics I took earlier uploaded. Here are two other shots of the Faith and Ardency.

Much bigger versions on my Flickr.

01-02-2007, 03:12
Shhhh, if you post those high quality pics, people can pick out the imperfections!

26-03-2007, 03:20
If I took a weekly snapshot of my desk, everyone would have a good idea of why I never get anything done. It looked like this a little bit ago:

but anywho, It took me two months to get around to but here for your inspirational pleasure is finally a how to guide for my Tyranid BFG ships, starting with the Pyro Krakken.

26-03-2007, 03:25
[bumping the thread to the next page so the article is more easily viewed]

26-03-2007, 03:37
How to Build a Tyranid Krakken

In 5 easy steps.

What you will need:

1x 3rd Edition Monstrous Creature Scything Talon
1x Devourer
1x Genestealer Extended Carapace piece
2x Devourer ammo feed arms
1x Plastic flight stand

It is highly advisable to have the magic plastic clippers, be they GW or another brand. They work wonders and really make cutting the flat edges for BFG conversions a breeze.

26-03-2007, 03:40
Step 1:

Cut the middle section from the scything Talon, save the extra two pieces as you will need them if you want to make a hiveship in the future [actually save everything because almost all of it has a use].

Cut the Devourer diagonally as shown, just behind the middle carapace pieces and before the juice hoses.

Step 2:

Attach the Devourer head to the Talon piece as shown. You may have to slightly trim them to get them to fit flush, lest you want to use some of your precious greenstuff. Always try to err on the side of cutting the devourer too far, as they are far more plentiful than the old Scything Talons.

Drill holes with a pin vice in a pattern that you like on the back to form engines; right where the plastic will be white in an oval from cutting the talon apart. I prefer to do 3 in a straight line, but any pattern works.

Less industrial modelers could stop here as it looks pretty good, but you know you want those extra gubbinz!

Step 3:

Now cut the Genestealer Extended Carapace in half, and cut the "thumbs" off of the devourer feeds. These will be used to pimp out the hull.

26-03-2007, 03:44
Step 4:

Attach the Genestealer Carapace peices to the sides, covering up the ammo feed hole and furthering the armored look of the Krakken.

Attach the "thumbs" to the back as shown, filling out the appearance and looking similar to the spines on a GW Hiveship.

Drill a pin into a flight stand and glue the finished Krakken on.

Step 5:

Sit back and admire your new critter for a while. ;)

Next up will be an Escort Drone, probably tomorrow as time is running out today.

01-04-2007, 03:43
See? I said I'd keep chugging along into the next day and where is that Escort Tutorial? Hmm?

I got distracted again! Mostly by the retarded amount of stuff arriving at my doorstep thanks to the evil machinations of eBay.

Here is roughly what I've got, including the two 3000pt Imperial and Chaos fleets I had before:

+++Imperial Navy

-Pewter Escorts

21 Cobra

7 Falcion

5 Sword

3 Firestorm

24 Plastic Cruisers.

7 Dauntless Light Cruisers

1 Emperor

60 Fighters

24 Assault Boats

15 FW Assault Boats

45 Bombers

+++Space Marines

-Pewter Escorts

12 Gladius

3 Nova

16 Hunter

-FW Escorts

6 Gladius

5 Nova

10 Hunter

3 Pewter Strike Cruisers

3 FW GK Strike Cruisers

2 Battle Barges

50 Thunderhawks

-Pewter Escorts

12 Infidels

9 Idolators

9 Iconoclasts

16 Plastic Cruisers

-Battleships and Grand Cruisers

3 Repulsives

2 Desolators

1 Despoiler

1 Planet Killer

72 Fighters

76 Bombers

20 Dreadclaw

[Hivefleet unconcluded, in construction. About 8000pts, so a lot of them.]

9 Ravagers

6 Onslaughts

6 Savages

4 Brutes

2 Terror Ships

1 kill Kroozer

+++Dark Eldar

5 Tortures

15+ Corsairs [depending on how many I can milk from the bitz]

1 Voidstalker

1 Eclipse

8 Warden Gunships

8 Mantas

1 Tombship

1 Blackstone Fortress

1 Space Station

3 Defense Platforms

3 Tamahl Pattern Laser Platforms

Lotsa Orbital Mines

and other less identifiable bitz like twisted cruisers made partially into space hulks, a handful of Eldar Wraithships, and so on.

So somewhere all that is going to get done, at some point in time, or another. I've also still got all 3000 points of 40k Eldar to do, and something like 1500 more of Marines.

I also have very near future plans for Epic, AI, and Necromunda, and will probably get an Inquisitor mini or two just to be able to say I collect the entire 40k Universe.

Storing things in tubs, I have about 36 Gallons of unfinished models. Gallons? Yes, gallons!

Something needs to happen! I need an intervention! You're just the person to stage it! And if you work with me, you might end up earning something.

Starting very soon my project log is going to include prizes. My next post ought to explain them once I've worked it all out.

01-04-2007, 05:32

I have far too many models. Many of us do. However I don't really like having legions of unpainted, unassembled, and [dear lord!] unopened armies. Project logs help many people to keep on track and get stuff done, but so far all it has given me is a written record of how fickle and distracted I am.

Thus, I'm staging my own intervention. Starting April 2nd: Each day*, if by midnight Eastern US time [GMT -5] I have not updated my Project log with actual progress**, and do not have a legitimate excuse***, I have failed.

Each time I fail, if you are the first to point it out, you will be rewarded with a prize. The prizes will vary greatly in size and value, and to make sure it's something actually prize like I'll offer you several choices in prize.

Early Ideas I've got include stacks of decal sheets, choice bitz like plasma guns or lascannons, tchotchkes like an Eldar Guardian sitting in an easy chair sipping a brew to oversee your games and provide good luck, on occasion [or to an action deserving good merit] I'll give out good stuff like BFG space marine Escorts, or Epic Chaos Daemon stands, or booster packs of CCGs if you're into them.

Just follow along, encourage me to get stuff done, comment on my achievements [or lack thereof] and you might end up with something shiny;)

*Not including Thursdays, as I do not get home until 10:30 and am quite exhausted from the long day.

**Actual progress being defined as me either assembling or painting something.

***Legitimate excuses can include going to the local shop for some games, as I go woefully rare and it is directly hobby related; unforeseen circumstances; holidays; y'know, common sense stuff, I won't try to BS or anything [as the whole point of this is to help myself after all].

Edit: The timespan for noticing I've not updated is not infinite. You must notice if I've not updated before midnight Eastern US time the next day. So no checking my log when it updates and scanning for missing dates ;)

02-04-2007, 17:55
Dude - i hate to point it out and be a sucker, but having some progress to go with that...

02-04-2007, 17:58
Well that was posted on the first, it starts the 2nd [today].

Right now I'm cleaning stuff up and will soon do something, pics to go along with that shortly.

02-04-2007, 18:10
hush you with your silly differentiation between 1st and 2nd... whoopsy.

02-04-2007, 21:25
Here is the progress [so far] for April 2nd:

The finished test model I'd already done, but I've started painting the fire Dragons Assembly line style. I've finished the wraithbone portions [fusion guns and ammo canisters on the backs, along with the melta bombs].

It doesn't look as good yet without the other colors to contrast it, but looks nice and crisp once complete. It's just a drybrush of Fortress gray over the black of the gun, then a 3:1 Blue Ink wash, finished off by another dusting of Fortress gray.

Here's a [crumby] close up of the finished one:

The armor plates are highlighted with Liche Purple, red and orange for gems and eyes, and so on. Not very complicated but looks pretty cool, like a very dark purple armor. This is going to be the look for my aspect warriors, dark purple with red contrasting highlights, somewhat Ninja like in appearance. [and I mean awesome Internet Ninjas, NOT those horrid anime ones.]

I'm scampering off for some errands now, might have some more progress after I'm back before midnight.

02-04-2007, 22:48
It may not be finished, but the lines cleanly painted.

On your give away, might I add auctioning some of it off to us to raise money for the worthy cause Destris is collecting for? He's not far off his target.

03-04-2007, 01:34
Well, what is that cause?

The pewter Space Marine escorts and some old Eldar I've got are really the only things I want to get rid of, the rest would be like little punishments for not getting stuff done.

As well as a rather healthy Pirates! collection. Mostly Pirates of the Revolution, but a fair amount of Crimson coast and a pinch of Barbary coast.

04-04-2007, 03:43
Update for April 3rd 2007: [half an hour before deadline, eep!]

Pretty wore out from work today, so nothing major.

Took Vallejo black back over to clean up the dust-over from the Wraithbone drybrushing, and then did the Liche purple edging on the remaining 5.

Experimented with some helmet designs on the finished one, no success really. Tried freehanding the Fire Dragon's rune [disaster], using the micron pens for dragon scales [looked pretty lame, and the pens are hard to get to work on anything that isn't almost completely flat], and also wings on the helmet [thought it would look cool, didn't; at least not with my level 0 freehanding skill], and had to end up just repainting it Hawk Turquoise. Standard helms for the Aspect Warriors and the Exarch's golden rune will have to suffice.

Edit: Oh I don't know why I just noticed, but major thanks to whoever gave my project log a 4 star rating! That is pretty heroic...

05-04-2007, 03:34
Update for April 4th 2007:

Was merrily painting along until I realized I was slowing down, and it was almost deadline again.

Today I did the helmet turquoise, eyes, and gold. The gold looks quite garish as yet so I'll be sure to tone it done with an ink wash or two.

Tomorrow all that will remain is the ink, the gems, and the sashes. I'll see if they will suffice by then before seeing if highlights and a botched shading attempt will be worth a go or not.

Tomorrow is also Thursday so no contest, but I'll try to have an update anyway as these suckers are almost finished.

Also, now that I'm moving in the month, my diabolical plan to keep myself focused is to only have one thing unpacked at a time to work on. So far, so good.

05-04-2007, 08:28
Sorry for not answering the question Steve, heres the link:

05-04-2007, 15:22
Well, now THAT is truly heroic!

When I get back from errands/work today, I'll compile a list, set off an auction, what doesn't sell goes to the bay, and then the paypal account at the end gets transferred to Destris.

07-04-2007, 02:18
Update fro April 6th 2007:

Rather than progress on models, I've compiled the list of things I can auction off for Destris.

The link is here: http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78262

07-04-2007, 16:48
Dang! I've been pretty busy lately and A) Unable to talk to you and B) haven't really checked the project log. Really digging the progress on the Eldar. Though I still anticipate the day when the Chaplain is done. :p

Keep it up. And stop focusing the camera on the daggone table! ;)

07-04-2007, 23:52
When you gonna learn I don't focus it on anything?

I press the auto setting and aim it in the general direction of my target. Sometimes this turns out well, generally it just suffices. I am not a camera connoisseur.

08-04-2007, 00:25
Will likely be heading home For Easter, so no Update for the 7th/8th.

08-04-2007, 00:31
I'm pretty sure, unless your camera is incredibly old/weird, that you press halfway on the shutter button and it focuses on whatever is closest/in the center of the viewfinder and then you press it all the way down to take the picture.

Oh well. I'm just being an ****. :p I should look at that camera next time I'm up.

Will likely be heading home For Easter, so no Update for the 7th/8th.

Epic fail. :(

10-04-2007, 00:35
Update for April 9th 2007:

Not worth a pic, but I painted the gemstones on the first Fire Dragon, then got distracted and decided to make a converted lightning claw from a Scarab and a NecronDestroyer left hand.

Was an idea for a replacement of my Space Marine Commander's bionic lightning claw, didn't think it was worth the risk to damage him and see how it looked as a replacement. Might give it a shot on some random conversion some day.

11-04-2007, 03:56
Update for April 10th, 2007:

Eek, I almost forgot! Here's 40 minutes' panicked work.

I painted the rest of the regular gemstones, for the Exarch I plan to actually do [read: try] some gem shading effects to make him stand out.

Also, you can see in the corner that the Space Marines have deep struck back into my thinking, so don't be shocked [though I doubt anyone following this log would be ;) ] if I suddenly switch back to them.

11-04-2007, 04:18
Dangit! Only a few minutes away from winning something! Looks pretty nice though.

Can't wait till you start working on your 'Rines again. Or the Farseer.

14-04-2007, 02:54
Well, had you paid attention Wednesday night, you would have won something, as I really didn't update!

Too late now though.

Update for April 13, 2007:

Bah, the camera is out of juice and I've no energy to scrounge for batteries.

I purchased Codex Dark Angels [to better represent Ultramarines, Ironically], the new plastic Devastators, Dark Angel Veterans kit, The new Terminator Librarian, and one regular new Librarian.

The whole last bit will be a Librarium Command squad, should be a pretty neat unit.

As for construction, I've built the Terminator Librarian, and will wile away the rest of the night tinkering with the bits to get a good look to the unit, and read through the new Codex.

15-04-2007, 03:59
Update for April 14th 2007:

This no camera thing makes updates pretty weak.

Built two of the Librairium members. They're pretty rad, you'll just have to take my word for it.

Edit: Between moving [and the soon to take effect fact that the camera isn't really mine, I'll have to buy one] I'm gonna have to call a temporary stop to the contest and to updates.

I'll still be working on stuff, that's for sure, and once I've moved I'll take stock of everything [I mean everything, there's a ton of things I've got that I never took pics of] and get back on track rolling along, hopefully stronger than ever before.

I'll also live right next door to my game shop [coincidence I swear! ;)] so games and battlereps should show up, along with much more motivation to get things done.

17-06-2007, 17:16
Since you haven't updated in the better part of a long, long time... Do I win?

Wait, didn't read the last post - nvm!

17-06-2007, 17:32
EDIT: My old log is closed.

Check out My shiny new Dark Mechanicus (http://warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=130419) log here, and other logs to come, linked in my signature.
