Good idea on the bands Tiller!
Came back from a 1500 point tourny today. 2 wins and 1 loss. I'm very pleased with how the army looked and worked. Mortars are worth their weight in gold.
I need to tweak my list a bit and I'll be one step closer to Baltimore.
Also got a Leman Russ from Astador so work can begin on that tomorrow!
Good to know it showed up mate! :) Can't wait to see you do this one up! Did you ever paint the sage guy I sent you?
Congrats on the GT performance and having everything painted up.
As for the Vets, keep them muzzleless. More futurific that way.
This Army is just stunning, big props to you for the hard work you have put in

This army is simply beautiful as most everybody has said. This army has inspired me to play my own vostroyans, rather than cadians. I think mine will be ad mech themed, you nkow a motif and bionic here and there, not to mention the beautiful techpreist. I'm looking forward to seeing your tanks. I assume they will be green?
Mr Kibbles
03-10-2007, 02:24
If there an artillery regiment, they won't have tanks, unless they're working with an armoyured vossie regiment
Light of the Emperor
03-10-2007, 02:29
Cheers everyone!
I have to put the artillery theme on hold for the sake of the GT for which I will field 2 russ and possibly a chimera.
I am working on an artillery piece too.
Down the road, my armored company will probably become a Vostroyan AC alongside one of the new baneblades. The tanks will definately be green with red accents.

sounds great,
cant wait to see pics of those tanks and baneblades :D

My first "Vostroyan" pattern russ should be done tomorrow. Nothing fancy but it's looking good. The artillery piece is nearing completion as well.
I've also been working on the army background because I plan to create a "mini codex" as my army list for the GT.
Of course some of the information needs to be changed from artillery to infantry for the sake of my GT list, but other pieces can stay. I came up with the idea of the 11th having slight deviations from normal infantry regiments. In this case, they have two "sub units" in the army are called Karazhan's Guard and the Black Guard.
I will put up final versions of the background as soon as I can. Here's a small teaser:
Karazhan's Guard are named after legendary 11th commander Juli Karazhan to honor his deeds at the Battle of Tyra III. The hardened veterans of this company are the epitome of Vostroyan ideals. Stubborn and well versed in the imperial creed, only the members of Karazhan's Guard have the honor of wearing the leopard shakos. They march into battle in full parade uniform, accompanied by musicians and fluttering banners. The guard never retreats and has needed to be refounded several times in the regiment's history due to epic last stands worthy of remembrance and song.
Where Karazhan's Guard are the shining light of the regiment, the 11th's stormtroopers are the shadows. Morbid and utterly silent, the Black Guard, as they are also known, conduct only the most hazerdous missions. Infiltrating deep into enemy territory, the stormtroopers attack supply lines and destroy military hardware. Needless to say, the survival rate of these missions are quite low and only the bravest, or most foolish, join.
I will need some help on this "mini codex", particularly with image cut outs and what not. If anyone with photoshop skills wants to help me out, please let me know. Thanks.

You may want to change the Storm Troopers bit to Grenadiers (Storm Troopers specifically come from the Schola Progenium rather than the same world as the Regiment they are attached to).
Notable Grenadier groups for example are the Cadian Kasrkin, and the Death Korps Grenadiers. Both are specific Storm Trooper equivilents hence the name Grenadier rather than Storm Trooper. Though they do use the Storm Trooper unit entry, by the fluff they aren't Storm Troopers just the elite of their worlds.

that looks really good mate but the heavy bolters need to be shorter
The Laughing God
05-10-2007, 23:53
I like the long heavy bolters. Beefs it up a bit. The turret looks really cool instead of the standard one. Is the second russ going to get it too?
Very nice a smooth well painted tank.
Keep up the good work.

I'm a fan. Definitley going to stop buy at Baltimore to take a look at the list. Are you going to do a display board or will you not have enough time?
Light of the Emperor
06-10-2007, 03:03
Heru Talon, you bring up a good point. Grenadiers does sound better and makes sense fluff wise. Thanks.
FarseerUshanti, I look forward to meeting you. I don't have time to make a display board. Plus, it'll be so big I couldn't even get it on the airplane. I'll have to make due with a huge tupperware container top.
Basilisk artillery up tomorrow.
Damn that's a good idea for the Leman Russ barrel. I've been toying with a basilisk set and the Empire Cannon and Mortar set. Since the Cannon actually sits 'inside' the Mortar barrel, you can get an extended 'antique' cannon. But I've been outfitting my Empire army with the lengthened cannons... but I see that a Leman Russ can benefit from them as well!
Great stuff as usual!
sj
Looks fantastic. The only problem I can see is that it looks like the heavy bolters only have about 5 rounds each before they're out of ammo, judging by the feeds....

LotE, the Russ is wonderful. I've got to get some empire cannons. What bank do I have to rob? :D
I agree that the HBs are pulling it a bit down, it's been said already - too long and the feeding doesn't work - it should be feeded internally (I know, it's not that interesting...).
Plus, I'd drill the exhausts, it adds another detail and isn't that hard.
The paint is, however, wonderful.
Crazy Ivan
06-10-2007, 08:58
Hey LotE, I really like that Russ! The battle cannon is a great idea. As for the Heavy Bolters, I think the 'rule of cool' applies here: the feeds don't have to be realistic, as they're cool. The paintjob is crisp as ever! How did you make the commander? With greenstuff? I've been thinking about how to make the commander of my future chimera look like a Vossie...
Toschenko
06-10-2007, 12:45
Me likes!
In my opinion though, it's lacking some sort of distinguishing insignia, adding a squadron number would be sufficient. Maybe you can add it later, once the deadline is over.
As always, excellent painting and conversion ideas.

I'm glad the russ is well received...makes me feel better about it.
I will definately cut down the bolter's length and remove the ammo feed on the sponson bolter. It'll look a lot better.
Insignia shall be added.
@Ivan: The commander is made from a plastic empire armored chest, the cadian sgts head (with comm link cut off), kroot shoulder pads and a greenstuffed fur hat. Small bitz include a FW brass eagle and an empire feather. I've had him lying around for a while and finally found some use for him!
Looks fantastic. The only problem I can see is that it looks like the heavy bolters only have about 5 rounds each before they're out of ammo, judging by the feeds....
agreed, usually the ammo feeds are inside the tank for good reason afterall :p
really like the battle cannon conversion, much more gothic to match the vossies

07-10-2007, 08:23
That really is impressive and is every bit as good as the FW one. Once Baltimore GT is out of the way it requires a 'friend' (as Bob Ross would put it) it also requires a Gun tractor and if you are interested I might have an idea on that.
By the way MF 3000 glad to be of help, I would really like to see what other people achieve.
The artillery is just beatiful, absolutely beatiful! I don't even know what else to say besides that, i'm just that impressed! :D

There will definately be another one of those artillery pieces. While I didn't take enough pictures for an accurate tutorial, I'll post up what I have and walk through it.
I'd love to hear the idea you have Old Guard.
Last russ for the tourny is done:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4112.jpg
While the heavy bolters are normal on this one, I realized the gap on the main barrel. Sigh, its always something. I'll get that covered up.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4114.jpg
And all the big stuff I have so far:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4115.jpg
Now its back to some troops: a 6 man lascannon team and an 8 man grenadier squad.
Since I did it over at the AmmoBunker, I figured I'd put a picture up here too:

I love that Earthshaker. Words cannot express how much. Breathtaking work, even by your usual high standards! I am in awe.

ooh, I like. now do a bombard.:p I really like the second one, but the first is also good. I do prefer the exposed ammo, just cause it looks cooler, but I think they look too long. anyways they look great, and really fit in with the army.

After staring at the picture of the russ' cannon, I decided to redo it completely. I thought that mold line was taken care of but that's not the case. It will also allow me to stuff up those holes.
A better version to come!
Toschenko
10-10-2007, 00:07
Ehm, I think I'm confusing with all these boards around... :wtf:
If I can make a suggestion, why don't you add (on your next tank) some more battle damage, like the bullet holes on the last tank's left sponson... not something overwhelming, I'd follow a more subtle approach... you know, I'm suggesting this as I'm a weathering fan (hell, I'm weathering even my dwarves! :p)

11-10-2007, 02:24
Alrighty, this is a quick tutorial on making the wheeled earthshaker chassis. As soon as I build the next one I'll have a more advanced version, but this will suffice for now.
Things you will need:
-Basilisk sprue frame D and E
-AFV Club M115 8 inch howitzer (1/35 scale)
-Plasticard/PVC pipe (for the wheels)
Here's what the model box looks like:
http://aolsearch.aol.com/aol/redir?src=image&clickedItemURN=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.jaguarmodels.com%2 Fafv%2Faf35s06.jpg&moduleId=image_details.jsp.M&clickedItemDescription=Image Details
And the real one:
http://aolsearch.aol.com/aol/redir?src=image&clickedItemURN=http%3A%2F%2Fcontent.answers.com%2F main%2Fcontent%2Fwp%2Fen-commons%2Fthumb%2Ff%2Ff7%2F300px-M115_display.jpg&moduleId=image_details.jsp.M&clickedItemDescription=Image Details
Step 1: Assemble the earthshaker cannon and get the shield off the sprue. These are the only parts you'll need from the basilisk box.
Step 2: Assemble the M115 howitzer model. Build only the main chassis which includes the front axels, the turret housing and the leg bracers. You don't need the gun.
Step 3: The basilisk cannon gets placed where the normal gun would be. It fits perfectly...no cutting needed. Figure out what position you like most and glue the cannon in place.
Step 4: Add the shield. This is a bit tricky as the shield is just as wide as the main turret housing. At the bottom of the shield, there are two triangles which glue the shield down to the basilisk. Take an x-acto knife and cut away half of the diameter. Face the back of the shield head on and you'll see what I mean. It's a thin cut, but its just enough to fit snugly onto the turret housing.
Just above the large silver wheel you can see where the shield attaches to the body:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4091.jpg
Step 5: The wheels. Irfpio, of Leviathan fame, was kind enough to make the wheels for me. They are made of pvc pipe about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. A sheet of plasticard was cut to fit inside. Then add in beams of plasticard that go around a center circle. You can make the design any way you want.
You can also just go with the wheels that came with the model.
Step 6: The axels. Since my fabricated wheels were bigger, I had to add another axel further up. This was done by simply gluing an aluminum tube to the end and glue the wheels onto the end. If you use the supplied wheels, you don't have to worry about this.
Step 7: Throw on Imperial bitz. I added some FW brass eagles and bitz from the tank sprue.
Here is what it should look like pre paint:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4008.jpg
It's very simple to do and by no means the only way. Once you get the pieces you need, experiment with different bitz and pieces. I know of quite a few modellers who have an affinity for plasticard and can create wonders with it. Using the howitzer model as a base, anything can be done.
Hopefully that provided some insight. Had I known people wanted a tutorial I would've taken more pictures than I did. Next time around though!
Now, back to my lascannon teams...
Thats beautiful sweet armored death right there. Your guard are stunning

How are they doing in games may I ask
Light of the Emperor
11-10-2007, 14:51
Not bad at all. I either win big or lose narrowly so I'm heading in the right direction.
The mortar teams come through for me in games. They always managed to take stuff out no matter if its tyranids, eldar or marines. The pinning is great too which gets me another round of shooting at the unit. Not alot people take the mortars but I definately recommend them.
Ratlings also work well. They can pick off anything plus they get a better cover save when in terrain.
The Ld bubble with Iron Discipline is awesome. It's rare for me to have units run away. Units such as my vets and stormtroopers who are deployed away from the main body of the force get vox casters and they can hold their own too.

Thanks Cap'n!
I need everyone's opinion...
I got myself some fall leaves for my bases. I used the standard color but I also have them in light green and dark green.
What do you think of them? Too many, too few, doesn't work with the models? etc...
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4117.jpg
To answer your question Tyranoodle, I do plan on bringing the points up a lot further. If I field everything the way I want it (ie heavy mortars, thudd guns), I'll get around 2,100 points. The plan is to get it up to 3,000-3,500.
Things that will be added include a third russ, 1 more bassie artillery pieces, 2 thudd guns, a baneblade (why not?), a whole third platoon, Imperial Guard High Command (Chapter Approved) and perhaps a bombard or two.
It's still quite a bit to do but I'm up for the challenge.

with some grass, those bases would be perfect!
As it stands, a bit plain with just the leaves
Oh dang, the leaves are good bro. I think it can use additional leaves though. Maybe in autumn reddish colour on top of the yellowy ones?
sj
Light of the Emperor
12-10-2007, 02:01
The leaves can be ordered Here (http://www.barrule.com/Workshop/scratch%20builders%20paradise/leaves,%20feuilles,%20blatter,%20fogli.html)
I have them in three colors and that brown is the most "autumn" it gets. I'll probably spread a bunch out in a box and lightly dust them with red spray because it could use some more color. Good suggestion.
As for grass, I can't stand static grass because I can never get it to work they way I want it to.
The amount of leaves on the Flamer-trooper looks about perefect, but they feel a bit sparse on the artillery base. Perhaps put them down in clumps against the artillery carriage/wheels, to show them being windblown into piles?
Other than that, looks awesome. I also support the adding of reddish leaves - a little variety would be perfect.
TheBedla
12-10-2007, 08:36
As for grass, I can't stand static grass because I can never get it to work they way I want it to.
The leaves are great - I use(d) them for my Fantasy army. For the grass - if you don't like static grass, try this: take an old brush (or buy a really cheap one, like one for painting rooms), and cut the bristles at lenght of about half an inch (may vary to your own liking).
Then take a pinch of these bristles a superglue them together on one end, to create a bunch of long grass. You can make a lot of these in advance, and then just take a bunch and superglue them on your base.
http://honezzz.com/cpg/albums/userpics/10086/bestigor1.JPG
As you can notice, there are some red leaves on my bases as well - the manufacturer I get them from makes a lot of variants (red/brown, oak/maple/linden).
I might get you the name of the manufacturer during the weekend, if you wish. The prices are not worth mentioning, IIRC ;)
Agamemnon2
12-10-2007, 08:59
along with the leaves, maybe add a few fallen branches here and there? In nature, you rarely see one without the other.
Hello LotE
the artillery looks great....:D very well executed.. but you should have put rivets on the wheels - lazy bugger....
Cheers
Irfpio
I like the leaves. We're doing them on our Circle and Wood Elf armies. The only thing I might do if using them is put a bit more texture into the base to stop it being so flat so they look more natural.
Light of the Emperor
16-10-2007, 15:50
What type of texture should I be adding? Twigs, branches, moss?
I'd just uneven the ground for starters on some. Moss and twigs after that.

Rally Firstborn!!!
Finished up the lascannon squad. These guys are only here for the GT. Afterwards the lascannons will go on their wheeled chassis and the squad members will be assigned to a new platoon with new guardsmen taking their place.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4119.jpg
The first stormtrooper. Only difference is the hat. Again, I only need the squad for the GT. Afterwards the hats will be repainted and they'll become part of the new 3rd platoon.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4120.jpg
And after deciding all vets get the leopard shako, its only fitting the commander of the army gets one too.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4121.jpg
All that's left are 5 more stormtroopers. I'll then take a full GT army picture.
I also figured out a way to make a portable standard pole out of pvc so the Vostroyan 11th banner shall fly at Baltimore!
With Apocalypse on its way to my house, I have the idea of creating the Imperial High Command. I'm thinking of taking a warhammer regiment tray and filling up the middle with foamboard and then cutting the holes for all the characters. It'll essentially become a mini diorama filled with tables, maps and all manner of creepy characters (look on page 8 of the IG codex to see what I mean). I'll have my regiment plus envoys of other Vostroyan regiments and another "secret" regiment. There will also be commissars, servitors, cherubs, servo skulls...it'll be awesome!!!
That's some osome stuff bro;
quick question
Do you highlight your 'leather'? If so, how do you go about doing it?
sj
Light of the Emperor

The boots are bestial brown with a brown ink wash.
There are 3 types of brown on the models:
Scorched brown highlighted with graveyard earth
Dark flesh highlighted with bestial brown
Bestial brown highlighted with graveyard earth
Simple? Probably. Effective? Yes.

The GT is Nov 2nd in Baltimore so my army is going through the final prep phase which includes leaves on the base and a final layer of dullcoat.

IG High Command is an HQ squad for the guard. It was one of the last chapter approved, WD 306 I believe.
Basically its a crusade leading General (ie: Solar Macharius) with up to 12 aides that give certain benefits. Think DH inquisitor and henchmen. I can have astropaths, staff officers, servitor guards, even cooks!
It's a fun unit and it makes perfect sense to have one with Apocalypse since an officer of that caliber would only be commanding the largest armies.
Good luck with the GT. To bad I live to far away to make the trip, I would want to come by just to check out your army and meet you in person.

Totally osome bases man... I'm in envy of you, and have turned green - ha ha ha I'm so dry.

Man, I've never actually seen non-reds painted so well, that looks awesome!
Dug out my WD 306, how did I miss those rules. As my IG army grows I'll be sure to add a high command element to it for sure.

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the help and insights from everyone.
I just can't say how much I love this army. The models are wonderful sculpts...especially the commander. I don't want to stop collecting!
Now then, onto some replies:
alphachicken: As soon as the GT is over, I will be building a high command squad for the army. It will include two different Vostroyan regiments, a cadian regiment and a secret regiment yet to be revealed. The commanders will be going over maps with scribes and orderlies frantically reading data in the back. It will be modelled on a fantasy movement tray but all the models will be removable.
corrupt: Thanks. I'm always on the lookout for more models...especially since I want to build a third platoon.
Roel?/Razormasticator: Welcome, Graf-Generals, to the Vostroyan Guard. Remember to post your work in the Vostroyan thread!
Boogle: Tanks are not really my thing (gasp!) but for the GT I'm willing to make an exception. Nevertheless, the army will get a third russ and a baneblade down the road.
Old Guard: I am going to get something on these banners...just for you. ;)

Nice list, absolutely outstanding army! Probably the first time I appreciated the models.
Good luck at the GT, too bad you couldn't fit a hellhound in that list. They are the MVP almost every time for me. IF you dropped just two commissars and medics you would almost have it.
Light of the Emperor
27-10-2007, 16:20
Thanks!
The list I put down actually comes to 1719. Some tweaking could get me a hellhound, but there is almost no way I can get my hands on one with 6 days to go. I love the tank's ability though so there might be one in the future.

If you are only at 1719pts, then add a improved comms or the Mancharian Cross. It's nice to choose to move something after you have deployed, and seeing as you only have 2 tanks, you will want to make sure they are in play, so a re-roll for reserves may save the day.
I think a nicely converted Hellhound would look really good in this army. Maybe even a FW one! Then after you use it a few times you will want 2-3 for your next tourny.
Wow man, fantastic army. An inspiration for people like me who struggle to get any amount of stuff done to a good standard.
If you added some Hellhounds that would rock, I love the models (standard and FW variants) and they are pretty badass in game. They might get ignored more than a Russ, which is a mistake you can really capitalize on.

@devolutionary: I LOVE mortars. I really thing people underestimate their power. I want to have 9 of them for great barrage effect. Apocalypse is going to be really fun with my heavy mortars and thudd guns too.
You might want to try ratlings. Put them in a piece of terrain and let them go after all the big guys. Even opponents with a 2+ save will need to make quite a few saves to ratling fire...

That's a sharp looking army all said and done. You have kept your theme and not wandered, a difficult feat when traveling such a road. Of course a GT will focus you very nicely as I found in the past. Can't wait to see your cav in the next army shot. Good luck in Baltimore!

29-10-2007, 02:55
Really cool. I am now a bit depressed, because your army makes my Mordians look bad in comparison ;)
The army looks great together. I wasn't sold on the shovel armed commissar at first, but the more I look at it, the more I like it.
On another note, I did take a couple of your ideas. I am using ork lobbas as mortars and as soon as I can get my hands on some cherubs, I will be adding them in like yours. I also added a drummer and a stardard bearer converted out of the box sargent.
I also think that I found a solution to the shot guns. In the old necromunda boxed set, some of the plastic orlock were armed with a double barrelled shot gun. I snipped it off right before the pump and was able add it to the end of the clipped of lasgun. I looks ok. But, I think I found something better. I have a couple of Van Saar heavy stubbers. I clipped of the ammo magazine and the end of the barrel. I did the same on a trooper. It looks sorta like a modern day magazine fed shotgun. I came out pretty good. The only problem is I don't have any more plastic orlocks and only one more heavy stubber.
I am glad you have posted this thread. I look forward to hearing about your GT experience. I should be done with my Vostroyans on friday for my tournament on saturday. They don't look nearly as nice as yours and are RED :), but I will have finished them up in 3 weeks.
Thanks for the inspiration.

It's the fact they are all wearing masks (that or a difference in their hats maybe...). Anyways LotE has said he plans on adding more unique STs in the future when time constrains are less harsh (the ST stand-ins shown will likely be absorbed into regular Vosi Guardsmen Squads, and the like).

Yeah point taken, I meant for the GT environment he might have needed a clearer distinction. Personally I dont see why, different hats and all masks good enough for me, but tourneys may say otherwise
a quick picture of my vets w/ shotguns (not the best). Maybe an easy way to fix the barrel dilema

Heru Talon is correct. Time constraints didn't allow me to make "real" vostroyan stormtroopers. The distinction is in the hat color. I don't think there will be any problem with them at the tourny...if there is, people are too uptight.
Afterwards, they hats will be changed and they'll become the first squad of my third (autocannon) platoon.
Ivyoda, I'd love to see that center guy again with the bit you used. The glare is just to harsh to see...

I have returned!
It was definately the best GT I've been to. I met a bunch of really cool people including quite a few from Warseer.
If there was a win-loss category, I went 2-3 with one loss decided on a single dice roll. I did however receive a perfect score on sportsmanship and had 4 out of 5 preferred opponent votes. Alas, nothing was won. For painting I was given a 30 out of 40...dunno why. Overall the list played really well. There a few tweaks to be made but I'm happy.
None of the above really matters to me since its all about having fun...and there was plenty to be had!
Both Dave Taylor and John Shaffer really liked my army and there were definately plenty of people stopping by to chat. My command, ratlings and veterans all went to the photo booth so I'm hoping to see them online or even in a WD (fingers crossed on that one...I'm easily excited over such things).
My army could be easily seen because of this...I was hoping my opponents would allow my guard units within 3 feet of the banner reroll leadership checks...but they didn't :) :
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4169.jpg
One of many highlights was my game against Wareers own resident Ork Warboss "DaRedanecks". That game was very fun particularly because both of us were taking D3 shots of vodka a turn (He called it an Ork shokk attack). I think its safe to say I am now (fully) a true Vostroyan player.
The only downside was the fact my 30 passenger airplane didn't have space for my army case so guess where it had to go...I opened it up when I arrived to find nearly every heavy weapon team broken off, sand gone, etc. My vets had feathers broken, etc.
This weekend will be a time for massive touchups as many of my brave men suffered paint chips and some damages. Hopefully they can be restored to their former glory.
In other news, I picked up 2 chimeras, 2 russ, 1 demolisher, 1 hellhound, 2 sentinals and a centaur from a friend. Needless to say the Vostroyans are getting a lot of neat stuff in the next month or so.

I dont mind saying that the highlight of this event was my game with Light of the Emperor. His army was fantastic and he was the best oomie i have ever done battle with in or outside of a tournament. He got my favorite opponent vote and a 10 on sportsmanship from me! Light of the Emperor is a true credit and should be an shining example to Vostroyan's everywhere! Other than him shooting the crap out of me i had a great time!
he was also totally gipped on paintined. I looked carefully at his stuff and it was great. He certaintly should have gotten a 35 easily and possibly a 40. Armies which were painted no where near as well, did not have near the conversions or detail got scored higher. I believe he was penalized because models were just simply a whole lot harder to paint than some stupid beakie model is to paint.

Farseer Ushanti: It was a pleasure meeting you! Your army looked very nice as well. Drybrushing isn't well regarded amongst judges which is a shame because when done right, it is very effective.
BigJon: Thanks. This log will continue to serve the Emperor for quite some time. I look forward to seeing your Vostroyans!
Redd: Excellent game! Thanks for all the fun.
Bitz for the Imperial Guard High Command are starting to come in. I hope to start converting soon.
I bought two textured fantasy movement trays which I will use to create the display base. The question is, what will the display base be? In the trenches with mud and water? In a bunker with concrete and steel? In the field with trees and dirt?
I once came up with an idea for mechanicus command squads using floating "skiff" type arrangements as a sort of movement tray. Maybe a floating platform that they can all stand on and can ascend to better survey the battlefield etc.
Not sure if I explained that very well.

I would expand on your authum (spelled right?) theme and have them set up under some nearly leafless threes etc. . . and maybe ad some craters and other evidences of war, yet not too much, as i doubt the high commander would enter the "real" fighting zone, even if they joined a battle.
I think mine will be stationed under a statue of the imperial eagle (or some other propaganda'ish stuff) to demonstrate my regiments "cityfight in templecity" themed bases and background.

Baltimore GT scores are in:
Battle Points: 33/100
Sportsmanship: 50/50
Painting: 30/40
Player's Choice: 2
Favorite Opponent: 3
Overall Place: 96
Apparently sportsmanship is also based on battle points which I find kinda dumb. I am happy with the player's choice and favorite opponents. Definately room for improvement for next year at Vegas and/or Chicago.
All units in my army are undergoing touch ups to repair all battle damage suffered over the weekend.
I'm awaiting a package (that might be lost:() that contains all the necessary bits for me to start working on my high command.

Out of all the people that entered that tournament you got picked out of the 4 best armies in the whole thing.
congrats on getting your army up on the website.

Hey Mike!
Congrats that your army is featured on the GT site! You really deserve it! :)
What other bits did you need for the High Command if I may ask? The Preatorians?
Cheers. :)

It's a step in the right direction...next we conquor the world!

Nice one :) bloody well deserved!
Nice work with vossies at GT, havnt seen this log in awhile so really like the newer stuff like the veterans.
You have inspired me to also do a vostroyon army (eventually, getting the models but waiting till I can paint well enough to do the sculpts justice!)

Hi, Mike - I'd just like to add my congratulations to the already well-deserved kudos you've received. You've made the Vostroyans in to an army to be reckoned with!

Rally Firstborn!
Thanks for the kind words guys.
Here's the first shot of my next project: Imperial Guard High Command.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4288.jpg
There will be four regiments represented. On the left is a yet unnamed Vostroyan regiment. They will have the traditional red coats. The Commander in the center left will represent my force and he'll look just like my other one.
The Praetorians make an appearance! I need a regiment number for them too but they'll be painted just like the ones from GW. On the far right, the servitor is a place holder for representatives of the Cadian 8th.
The scene takes place on the battlefield so there will be makeshift barricades and stuff everywhere. I have plastic servo skulls flying around too. Once the table gets built, I will construct a tactical orb or whatever the circular 3-D maps are called...which is what they will be pointing to/ arguing about.
Old Guard also provided me with some cool posters and maps which will be made use of.
Why do this? Because its cool! Apocalypse allows me to take the Supreme Headquarters stratagem which gives everyone within 12 inches some awesome advantages.
Now, if only the rest of my bitz and such would finally arrive...

If that high commands going to be half as good as it sounds it's still going to be awesome.
Have you thought about throwing a death korpsman in there? Dunno why, just seems like the right thing to do.
Light of the Emperor
21-11-2007, 16:59
I would love to throw in the DK Commander but he's way too much! The DK are also waaay too small next to my Vostroyans. GW kinda screwed up the size on the Vossies as they are the same size as marines.
El Presedente

Yeah I suppose, you could always use the Steel Legion lieutenant though, one of my favorite models of all time, just change his pointing bolter to a pointing hand and It'll look like he's giving out orders.
Col.Gravis
21-11-2007, 23:10
Nice, looking forward to seeing the High Command progress!
Hehe and if your still after a regiment for the Praetorians, I'd humbly offer the services of my own Praetorian 4th ;)
Light of the Emperor
21-11-2007, 23:52
And the 4th they shall be!
I added plumes to their heads too...from the hair of an ork boy. Oh the irony!
The goal is to create a napoleonic "look" to the diorama with bright uniforms and decorations that look completely out of place on a battlefield. It should be fun!
Steel legion...I can't believe I forgot about them. If I can get my hands on that lieutenant model sometime I'll swap the cadians (or the second vostroyan regiment) for them.
Leion_of_turk
22-11-2007, 01:18
If you ask me i think the steel legion would be beeter then the cadians for cadians right now are to generic as of the moment where as you don't see Steel legion that often any more. You could always check the online store.

LotE, I just realized that I didn't give you my congrats for being featured on GW site, sorry for being in late :(.
The high command project is cool, might have to steal this idea for my apocalypse games :p. I recommend you to throw in a kaserkin or two, to act as bodyguards as in DoW: Dark Crusade, and to model one of the attendants as a commissar (since the administratum should be everywhere ).

@Barbarossa: Very nice group! You have a good mix in there. I need to make something similar to your vox station so the picture will come in handy.
@irfpio: Great to hear from you! The 24th they shall be! All regiments are now accounted for.
@Toschenko: Thanks! I did forget to mention that a commissar will be part of the group as well. I also am making a deal to get the cadians at ease so one of 'em will be perfect to add to the display.

Here's the base as it currently stands. Still a few more things to add including the table and all the skulls and goodies that will cover it. I even put a flagpole in the back, stuck into a mound of dirt to show the HQ location.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4291.jpg
And some of the Officers and adjutants:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4292.jpg
The plumes on the Praetorians look kinda large on the picture but when looking at them in person they're just right. I think the plumes and the feathers add a regal flare...Thoughts?
Looks good so far, IMHO I'd look into possible ways to lose the weaponry. Hard I know but I think it would look so much better if the officers in the tactical debate are not swinging powerswords or carrying lasguns.
I think the plumes give the officers a correct amount of aristocratic vanity. Looks good so far
Could I ask how you cut out the holes in the foam so accurately?
Col.Gravis
22-11-2007, 21:06
Works nicely on the officers, I'm not so sure about it on the regular Praetorian guardsman though, look a little odd somehow, what about doing him as a adjutant to the officer, perhaps a vox operator?

What I think you need is some sort of barricading around the base to show that they've setup in a defensible position.
Maybe barbed wire going around some of it, or maybe some sand bags or something along those lines.
Hmm, that pointing hand, the Vostroyan commander and the normal Vostroyan trooper are familair.. I wonder what awesome guy gave them to you? :D
But seriously, the display is coming a long very nice mate! How did you managed to get these holes so good? Great use of assesoires too, it really gives the display a nice touch. :)

All that's left for the base is the table and the leaves:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4293.jpg
I have an empire flag to represent the HQ's position. It is divided in half vertically by a thin green stuff line. What colors should the flag be? What color for the line?
I don't want it to draw away from the figs themselves which will be predominantly green or red with some blue and yellow in there as well.
Hmm. Halved with the two most predominant colours, and use the minor colour(s) for the line/trim/edging?

IMHO the high command should have access to some amazingly advanced piece of equipment to overview all the battle data, something like windows 40000 running (with faith in the emperor) on a 286
Are you going to add some more detail to the base?
For the flag, I don't know... having it divided vertically probably it's not the best option, the more I think of it (with the colors you would put on it) the more it seems a soccer club flag to me... I'd go with a red or green single-colored field, with a golden imperial eagle (the high command flag should be generic as much as possible, at least that's how I see it). If you want to go with two colors, I recommend you to divide the flag diagonally, but red and green are probably going to look too much striking on it.
Just my two (€) cents,
Toschenko

Yep, they'll be getting some hi tech stuff. You'll see what I mean soon.
Most of the base is done but there are some smaller individual bitz that I'll throw on. I don't want it to look too crowded once all the models take their places.
I do have some FW brass eagle pieces...I'll see what I can come with for the flag.
@Hallowed: I used two textured regiment bases and then filled them with a piece of foamboard. I used a circle cutter to break through the paper and then an x-acto knife to cut through the foam. I still need to add washers so that the models will be level with the ground.

This thread does such an excellent job showcasing the possibilities with the Vostroyan range, that I've actually scrapped my original plan of starting a Death Korp army in favour of a Vostroyan siege regiment. The models absolutely scream 40k, and while I was at first put off by the all-metalness of the range you've overcome this swimmingly, and so shall I.
Great thread, awesome models, and I love the personal standard idea (consider it nicked).

College work is keeping me busy but this weekend should finally see some more painting get done. I also figured out the banner issue...by not adding a banner at all! I have a large FW brass eagle that is cut in half. I'll add on half to the right of the pole. It's different, doesn't take away from the models bellow and still fits the theme.
Good call on the Vossies Free Company. They are somewhat cheaper than the DK to boot! Good luck building the army...definately post pictures of your models in the Vostroyan thread!
So LotE and Laughing God are related?
Anyway, stellar job on the display base. I can't wait to see the final result!

Its finally the weekend!
Here's the start to my high command:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4315.jpg
After seeing the picture, I gave them a scorched brown/black wash to tone the red down a little and add some more shading. They look pretty good now. There's about 6 layers of red on 'em but its washed out a bit in the picture.
A quick side note, I just created a fun little log in the fantasy forums...Christmas Gobbos! So check them out from time to time. Hopefully they are worth a laugh.
Cheers!
My 2:1 Scorched Brown/Black mixture is probably the single most useful thing I've ever mixed up. I'll probably go through my mixing pot of that before I go through any of the main army colors from any of my ongoing projects since I use it for everything. Glad I'm not the only one who finds it handy :D

LotE, I love those! Nice and deep red, I'm impressed (once again :p). Some stronger edge highlighting on the browns wouldn't hurt though, the sleeves are a bit flat compared to the webbing on the trooper's shoulders (but it may be the pic and is just my opinion, man :D)

Light of the Emperor
05-12-2007, 00:12
Thanks!
The brown will get some highlights as Toschenko pointed out.
As for the red:
basecoat: black
basecoat: mechrite red
first layer: red gore
second layer 50:50 red gore/ blood red
final highlight: blood red
wash: 50:50 chaos black/ scorched brown and lots of water
I actually tried my washes differently this time. Rather than using the inks, I mixed brown and black for all the reds and golds and black on its own for the silver. I think it came out quite well and it doesn't have the shine that the inks do.
I'm currently stripping the Praetorians so I can try again.
My package with some important bitz and models seems to have been permanently lost in the warp/ mail so I call upon the aid of my fellow Warseers once again. I'm looking for:
2 bipods from the cadian heavy weapon sprue
1 new commissar with powerfist and book OR the old commissar with powerfist
1 cadian commander OR ursarkar creed
I'm also in need of more Vostroyan models of any kind

What color do I paint the cadian regiment that's part of the high command? Keep in mind there's a red, green and red/yellow contingent present as well. I don't want to paint them some off the wall color that will make them stand out. At the same time, they need to be distinguished from the other regiments.

Maybe give the praetorians wooden casings on the guns to tie them in?
Yeah and I think with the flesh and pith helmets and other bits and pieces done, the minis won't clash so much.
sj
EDIT: because, although the red and blue are the uniforms of the Praets, the rest of the mini can be painted in the same way as the Vossies and therefore create a cohesive 'unity'.
Color clash? Talk about scale creep, that Praetorian on the right barely comes up to the Officer's neck!

Well, I have my fingers crossed that a package which has been MIA for a month and a half now will show up soon. It contains all the bitz and figs I still need to complete the diorama.
Now that you mention it, those canisters can use some weathering. Most of the stuff is painted very simple because models will be blocking it.

With a growing desire (and need) for rough riders, I decided to bite the bullet and paint up the attilans. Although I would still prefer the kislev gryphon legion, my searches are getting me nowhere fast.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4470.jpg
So, these guys will fill in for the mean time. I have 7 so far and need to pick up 3 more.
I'm thinking of sticking with the main color scheme:
http://store.us.games-workshop.com/storefront/newimage.asp?Size=A&Img=6364
If anyone else has paint sceme suggestions (or pictures) definately let me know about 'em!
Why not convert em like GW did?
Think you could pull it off.
Light of the Emperor
22-12-2007, 20:49
Quite a few things going against the conversion option: I hate cutting those metal hats, the scale is a bit off, different mustache styles, small faces, etc.
I've thought about it, but the hassle is too much.
The kislev models on the other hand would be perfect. Even the kislev horse archer ones could work. Since they have no armor, the smaller scale can be justified. All I'd have to do is cut off the bow and drill spears into their hands.
