That's not true, notice the green wire running from his Power Fist. ;)

On a seperate note, I'm flying over to London for spring break and will be heading to Nottingham. That Malcador is looking pretty good...

I wouldnt count on getting what you want that way mate. I went down to GW HQ Nottingham in October while seeing my Father in Law in England. I got 1 item from the list of Guard stuff i needed (cadian vehicle crew)everythiong else was out of stock or not held at the store, wasnt best chuffed :(

On the other hand the displays and such in Warhammer world are most impressive.

The falcon is from the bretonnian knights sprue. I'd imagine kossack style guard might have a falconer or two...

Yeah, no green on the commissar. They are assigned to the regiment and thus don't really carry any of the customs or uniform (initially at least). I only have one commissar with some green on him and that's my Gaunt model with his cloak.

I've been to Nottingham before and its quite a neat place. Hopefully they got the hot air problem in their display room figured out. They had fans going when I was there. I'm surprised the minis didn't melt!
As for the FW stuff, they recommend calling ahead so they can get it in stock. I'm still debating what to get. I might just pick up the last two thudd guns I need...then again, I can easily change my mind!

As far as the army goes, I've been working on several trades and have managed to get the following:

2 heavy bolter servitors (to go with my engineseer)
2 standard servitors (for thudd gun crew and rapier crew)
3 rough riders (to finish up that unit. Thanks Col Gravis!)
Dwarf engineers and other tech savy dwarfs (for thudd gun crew)
All the vostroyans I need to finish up the platoon

the reason is... its because i dont like green.

And all the new stuff...

While Vostroyans harbor a strong dislike for the squats, they have the only engineers capable of truely understanding the mechanics and power of the ancient thudd guns:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4750.jpg

And the final four Attilans as well as a servitor for my rapier platform:

If anyone has 2 spare horses, please PM me!

Time to start painting once again...

Very cool, LotE! Can't wait for them to be finished. The Squat conversions are really good and fit the weird nature of the 41st millennium.

Tempestice i had said that because Redquest is my last name and i had sent LotE the commissar so if anyone was wondering why he had that name theres a little fluff behind it.

Also LOVE the squats.

I don't think you know what commissars do or what they are.

Light of the Emperor

tempestice does have a point.
Sometimes, a more "progressive" commissar will try to blend in with the regiment and take on its dress and customs. This would let him/her to get closer to the men and earn their trust. Commissar Gaunt, for example, carries a camo cloak and the straight silver.

Mine are more conservative, keeping their own black coats and caps as a symbol of their office and holy duty. It is better to be feared than loved in their minds.
I also wanted a standard scheme to help differentiate them from the rest of the army to show the various imperial offices at work amongst the regiment. I will be adding enginseers of mars along with sanctioned psykers and priests...all of which will have their own uniforms as befit their jobs.

Your getting a Malcador?? :D

Not much going on I'm afraid. I'm still recovering from the loss (retirement) of my favorite American football player...one of the best all time.

@tempestice: No worries! The green is definately staying. I like it alot.

@liamrob:
Probably no Malcador for me...or any FW for that matter unfortunately. Can't afford it at the moment. Unless of course, someone wants to buy my thunderhawk.

I do plan on entering the Golden Daemon again this year in Baltimore. I want to pick it up from the honorable mention last year and win something this time around. I've got some ideas floating around...

I finally have a small break in my schedule so I can finally start the enginseer and all his servitors. Praise the Machine God!

A WIP of the squats:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4810.jpg

They will mostly consists of various shades of brown. I want them to be their own distinct unit. At the same time, I threw in some green here and there to tie them in.

The work continues, for Vostroya and the Emperor.

Why is it that when YOU convert the WHFB dwarfs into 'Squats' they actually look convincing, but when others do it, they look not.

Goes to prove that you are indeed the Light of the Emperor!

08-03-2008, 21:53
Unfortunately I disagree, I think they're far off base for the rest of the army. They don't feel like squats did, look too much like fantasy models, and simply stick out like a sore thumb. Still, it is NOT my army, and they are still well converted technically and painted at the great standard I've come to expect. It's simply the aesthetic value for me :)

Light of the Emperor
08-03-2008, 22:04
I agree on both fronts.
I didn't go crazy converting them since they crew thudd guns which rarely see game time...and in friendlies, no one cares about the crew anyway! The real squats are obviously a lot different with helmets, goggles, lasguns, flak armor, etc.
With these guys, I tried to get my hands on the "least" dwarf looking models. One is carrying on old laspistol, another has a chainsword and few have purity seals...nothing special really. I did try to get away from dwarf hammers, instead giving them tools.
Once they're finished, I'll post 'em so I can get more feedback.

As always, thank you for the comments and suggestions.

Getz
08-03-2008, 22:36
Well, I think their coats fit in quite well with the Vostroyans aesthetic, but I agree that they still look a bit "Dwarfy."

Personally, I think the problem is the helmets.

THey look sweet.
You found a solution for your tank basecoating problem dude? Gonna say, i could track you down the appropriate colour in a spray i guess.

Monsterzonk
09-03-2008, 07:08
I like them. Usually I wouldn't, but you did a good job! They tie in smoothly with the Vorstroyans. It probably helps that both are wearing chain mail... They probably wouldn't fit with Cadians.
The helmets are still an issue, I guess. They look a little too "dwarfy". Maybe use Green Stuff to give them fur caps? Not the tall Vostroyan style, but smaller yet very similar.

Toschenko
09-03-2008, 09:43
I agree with Monsterzonk. Give them a furry cap and they should tie in better with the rest of the army.

BTW, nice conversions :)

Furry hats...I never even thought of it. The ony one who still looks like a dwarf to me is the one with the candles. The rest seem ok. My favorite is the one with the weird mask/eye piece.
I'll see what I can come up with.

Hopefully I can start on a bunch of adeptus mechanicus stuff too.

the dwarf/squats look amazing. wheres the chain sword one?

Monsterzonk
09-03-2008, 16:44
Another thing the old school Squats featured was baseball caps (yeah, like they'd still play baseball between their Crusades...). That would definitely be the undwarfiest thing ever...

Legal note: I claim full rights on the term "undwarfiest". ;)

Altair
09-03-2008, 17:07
The slayer with servo-skull and lasgun looks spot on. Rest of the crew still look like dwarfs tbh- tho still at the same high standard of painting as the vossies.

Crazy Ivan
09-03-2008, 17:25
I like 'em. They're very nicely painted (as we've come to expect), and the one with the servo skull especially fits in nicely. I think any issues with them looking 'dwarfy' would be solved by showing them in action with their thudd guns and the Vostroyans.

Looking forward to the Ad Mech stuff!

Loving the squats! Very nice. Keep up the good work!

Simple quick way of adding to the 40k feel would be to add some frag grenades or something.

Either way, lovely models. :)

London was fantastic. 'Twas my second time there and I had the best time. Actually went to the Tower of London twice because I was so fascinated by it.
I got to chat with the manager at the Covent Garden GW and he was a really cool guy...and knew about Firebase too!

@kasrkin: I am a senior at UNH and am majoring in business administration/ marketing.

@Dahedd: My rapiers count as autocannon sentinels. I need one more to make a squadron and perhaps convert to carry a lascannon.

I am planning to head back for GamesDay. The only reason I want to go is to win a daemon...its become a goal for me and I've been working on several side projects as potential entries. Hopefully I can build upon last year's honorable mention.
We definately need to meet up though!

One of the funniest quotes I've seen on Warseer:

"I came ... I saw ... I conquered craploads ... and still GW left me out of the new Guard Codex. GW, fu- ... <rest of writing eroded>"
- Writing on the tomb of Lord Commander Solar Macharius

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4835.jpg

His base should be done tomorrow...nothing fancy but definately 40mm worthy. He is the Lord Solar afterall...

I am really enjoying all these extra additions to the force. Squats, psykers, commanders...I think they add that Imperial wierdness to the Guard. Now its onto the Ad Mech contingent.

29-03-2008, 02:25

Thanks guys. The original GW paintjob for him had all the laurels painted silver. That's just too much metallics for my taste, plus he'd blend in with the Vossies. I think the green works well with the rest. Not my best painting by any means, but I think he'll do for now.

I have another "Wanted" thread up. You can check it out here (http://warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135906)

I'm currently painting an enginseer, 2 heavy bolter servitors, 3 combat servitors and a rapier. Work is slow as there is a lot going on in "real life". Real life eh? What is that, an RPG?

3rd platoon is nigh complete. All that remains is 3 autocannon teams and the command squad's plasma gunner and banner bearer.

4 more attilans will be getting paint soon in order to bring my rough rider count up to 10.

Then there's another Russ and a Hellhound... it just doesn't end!

Loving the alternate colour scheme for Solar Macharius, he now looks like he doesn't mind getting his hands dirty! (unlike GW's white one!)

Light of the Emperor
03-04-2008, 04:15
Thanks everyone!

@Caelas: The officer is pretty simple to do.
Cloth: bestial brown, then 50:50 bestial/ graveyard earth, then graveyard earth...obviously working the highlights leaving the other colors in the recesses. Then I washed it all with some watered down brown ink.
Armor: basecoat catachan green, then 50:50 catachan/ camo green, then sharp highlights with straight camo.
Skin: Bestial basecoat, then dwarf flesh, then elf flesh, then a watered down brown ink wash.
Gold: Brazen brass, shining gold, watered down brown ink wash.

It's very basic...the trick is keeping things clean and using the washes. Hope that helps!

Just a heads up.

For someone in a painting lull, your rate of completion far outstrips many painters and modelers, including me :D

Using the rapiers as sentinels is a great idea, and they look great, as do the techy and servitors. But i agree not your best work, the red seems to lack some of the depth of your previous work.

Cheers

Light of the Emperor
06-04-2008, 21:29
Cheers!

There's 3 shades on the red. While the red could've been a lot better, the light seems to wash it out a bit. Any ideas as to how I can reduce this? Perhaps a cloth filter in front of the lamp? I currently use one overhead light and one from the front.

Now that the admech is finally out of the way (I do not enjoy painting 'em), its on to something more fun in the form of my last 4 rough riders! I do still need horses so if anyone has 2 of the older plastic empire horses with the heads up, let me know!

Also, FIREBASE 6 is up. I am now writing a standard feature article called "The Imperial Register" which is a sort of Chapter Approved. If you have any ideas for units, wargear, etc, send me a PM and we'll see if we can get it into the mag!

you need more plain infantry and some Leman Russes to make this army complete =)

I like the rough riders, never liked the models but your paint job brings them to life. I think the Vostroyan looks just like an attache or similiar, keeping them in line.

II like the rough riders, never liked the models but your paint job brings them to life.

Thanks. I was not a fan of them initially either. But they fit in for various reasons. The similar style of hats, clothing and mustaches fit in with the vossies. They also have that second edition look to them that I am trying to capture throughout the force. And its another unit with a banner. I definately can't wait to finish up third platoon and line up the army for battle with all the standards billowing in the wind. I think I have 8 banners now.

Artificer Armor...I was gonna give you negative "interwebz" points for the crazyfrog reference, but your location description made up for it tenfold! :D

Anyone have two more horses, preferably with the head up? Anyone? Bueller?

With the rough riders done, I guess its time to focus on some tanks...pictures to come.

22-04-2008, 19:41
yea tank goodness it will be nice to see some of your vossie tanks. did you ever finish those sentinels from pages back?

Light of the Emperor
22-04-2008, 20:09
The "sentinals" are the two rapier destroyers. I just need to mount the servitors on the bases and they'll be all set to "count as" sentinals with multilasers...or lascannons. Pictures of the rapiers are a page or two back.

ghostmaker12

Woah, bottom of second page already. I remember way back when logs would stay on the first page for more than a day! You young'uns do everything so fast nowadays ;)

Hey Liam! Well, here's a picture of what's next:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4870.jpg

I can't finish the command squad (two guys on left) until I can get another empire banner from someone. Then there are two more plain vossies needed to flesh out the thudd gun squad and finally 6 vossies for my eventual autocannon teams for 3rd platoon. Zzap gun chassis pending of course...

After that, who knows?

ghostmaker12
24-04-2008, 11:39
you gonna convert that russ into a vanquisher? or is it going to stay as a standard russ or demolisher?

Light of the Emperor
24-04-2008, 14:37
It'll become a third standard Russ. I do have a demolisher that will eventually get painted too. There's also a vanquisher and a destroyer tank hunter along with two exterminators.

For the purpose of this army, I'd like the russ for more competitive games while I use the artillery for fun, themed games. I really want to get my hands on some griffon mortar tanks and hopefully some bombards in the future.

After spending the past few days slowly making my way through this entire log theres just one thing that needs to be done.

*Stands up and claps*

This army is amazing LotE. Between yourself Bedla and various others on the Vostroyan Thread i've decided to put together my own Vostroyan force (was torn between the Firstborn and Steel Legion) in the future though it will be mechanised. Going to hold off for the new Guard Dex later this year before work begins on it. Have bought a blister of guys though to run out some test schemes.

Subbed :p and look forward to any future updates.

Rally Vostroya!
It seems like its been a while. With college finals over soon, I should be able to pick up the pace a bit.

That's a good idea jimbobjeff. I'll look into it!
Thanks Ocid! Welcome to the firstborn. Unfortunately, the guard codex is pushed back. It'll come out sometime in '09 supposedly. The basic structure shouldn't change so you could probably start amassing and painting troops.

Here are the completed "sentinals":
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4885.jpg

ghostmaker12
11-05-2008, 16:42
they look great. the only downside to them is that they dont get the hight benefit of the sentinels, now that can be a good thing and a bad thing.

downside- cant get those pop shots from over the tops of things I.E your own troops or tanks

Upside - more covert and smaller so less targetable.

Cdaws08
11-05-2008, 16:46
Wow! I really like those "sentinels"! Any chance we could get a different angle shot of them? I see you have the FW servitor on one gun, but what is the second servitor made from?

Light of the Emperor
11-05-2008, 21:32
Here's another shot of old and new rapiers:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_4849.jpg

The servitor on the right comes from the Techmarine box.

As far as "counts as" rules go, I would think height and such stays the same. If it counts as a sentinal, shouldn't it have the same height (in terms of shooting and being shot at) as a sentinal?

I have some more figures primed and ready for paint.

The malcador seems in good shape, but I need to start over on 'em. He's the first to take a dip in the simple green! I don't think, however, that the plastic treads (which are nigh sealed with sand/glue) will survive. Therefore, I am wondering if any of you kind readers have Russ/Chimera tracks to spare. I need enough to cover both sides of the hull. If you happen to have some, please let me know!

I also have a rediculous amount of horses now! 20 rough riders with horses along with 22 extra bretonnian horses! The riders will get stripped as well but I fear the hats will need to be resculpted. In addition, I need round 40mm bases. If anyone has 'em...

The ogryns aren't too bad. Three are metal so they can be easily done. The rest might take some more work as they are plastic so we'll see. I also got a full unit of 6 fantasy ogryns if anyone wants to buy them (or trade for bases/ treads).

So to recap: tons of stuff to do and need imperial treads and 40mm round bases! Thanks!

Can't hurt to be careful, though. For example, I left a FW Hellhound to strip in metho overnight (I didn't have anything better on hand), and by the next morning the resin bits had the hardness and consistency of Rubber. We call it the Rubberhound now.

So, yeah. testing on inconsequential gubbinz first is always a good idea if in doubt.

I know that simple green dosen't affect plastics too much, but the plastic treads themselves are thickly coated in sand/super glue. I don't think anything can get that stuff off.

After further work, I've written the ogryns off. Not much to fix them and I don't like their rules too much anyways.

I did strip a few rough riders so we'll see how they turn out painting wise.

After a few days of simple green and dremel assisted scrubbing, I've gotten the Malcador back into a somewhat decent shape:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_5031.jpg

I've left off the engines and bolters for now. More stuff will be added on later but is too brittle for the upcoming rounds of drybrushing. I will add a layer of sand along the tracks and it'll be ready for painting.

Can I ask which Empire box set you get this standard in? Because I recently bought the State Troops box thinking I was getting one of these, and needless to say I didn't.

And of course; brilliant work as always.

Cygnusmaximus

It's the missile troop box (the handgunner/crossbowman box) - Great banners; way better than the short-poled state-troop ones.

Light of the Emperor

@Sword of Glory: The bolters are just left off so I don't have to deal with them breaking when I drybrush the tank. As far as the banners go, they are all still green. I'll get going on them eventually as the Baltimore GT is coming up in November.

The Malcador paint job is all set. Now its onto the details and dirt:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_5032.jpg

And the start of my factory workers. These are the guys that devote 1 out of every 10 working hours to the upkeep of the Firstborn. Obviously none of them are firstborn sons, but they all take great pride in their work and can form capable militias when needed.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_5034.jpg

These guys will be wearing alot of muted colors, mostly browns, greys and blacks. The only "Vostroyan Green" will be found on the squad's banner and the coat of the overseer who probably got his hands on some surplus goods.

Haven't been in your logs for a while LotE but i have to say the quality never dips. The atillans especially look incredibly good, considering how old they are and comparitively badly sculpted next to the Vostroyans. the use of Kislevites as militia is inspired but i doub't they'll last very long in battle with just spades and wrenches. Lastly the hook hand banner bearer is just inspired and congrats on the largest Vossie army in the US, i can't wait to see them all here.

Daemonslave
05-07-2008, 19:13
I can't believe I've missed this log. I've seen your others LotE but never this one. Great quality and numbers - I bet it took quite a while to assemble this lot.

I know its probably to late, but did you try putting the Malcador in the freezer. I find that that often helps when trying to loosen superglued joints - I'm not sure how it would work with sand mixed in.

The Malcador is done. I shall have pictures in the morning. I tried to keep it as close to the style of my Russ as possible. The only thing I messed up on was painting all the heavy bolters black rather than gold. Oh well :)

@Luthien: Thanks. True they won't last long without guns but its the 41st millenium and if flying babies can give inquisitors +1 initiative, then militias with wrenches can take on the forces of Chaos... ;)

@Daemonslave: Glad you like 'em. This log's been going on since 2006 and I'm still not done. 3rd platoon is getting finished up but I would like one more platoon...Never thought of freezing...I'll have to try that sometime.

@MF3000: I thought I had the standard bearer too but turns out I didn't. Gotta get my hands on him plus more kossacks.

Yes, I'm missing the rear bolter...that will come in the mail. I really liked the engine detail so I kept the cover off and added a see through mesh screen instead. The plan is to get Gen. Grizmund from FW and turn him into a proper Vostroyan tank commander.

Nice Malcador, the only thing I'd say is that the paper on the back could use some writing... something machine cultish. But I don't recall if you like doing that or not, and if I go back in the log to find out I'll never get any work done today.

Hooray for Malcadors!

Are you using the Factory Workers as Conscripts?

Light of the Emperor
07-07-2008, 19:43
Cheers guys!

The factory workers will probably serve as conscripts when larger numbers are at hand. I was thinking they could also be put to use as "tech servitors" to assist my engineseers in repairing tanks.

Writing on the parchments throughout the army will also commence at some point before the GT. That tourny kinda forces me to get back to all the little details.

As far as the Malcador goes, I am content with it. I am not a big treadhead *Gasp!*
I myself like seeing row upon row of infantry. Still, I'm hoping for some bombards and medusas down the road...

All throughout this project log, I've injected little bits of fluff. I am actually going back to find everything and put it all together in one big piece to stay consistent. Knowing a bit more about Vostroya (thanks to Rebel Winter) helps me too. For the sake of my army's composition, I might have to drop the "artillery" portion of the name. They shall be the 11th Vostroyan Imperial Regiment. Obviously their nickname is "The Imperials"...cue the Imperial March Theme! Just kidding...
The second edition theme that I set out to recreate seems to still be in effect which is good. The kossack/ 19th century soldier imagery is good too.

Orca
09-07-2008, 17:53
Glad to hear you're going back over the parchments, they always draw my eye and I think they look better with something done to them. I hadn't thought of tech servitors, an intersting option. They'd make a great dioramma piece with a bombard or earthshaker stuck in the mud.

Very nice work on the Malcador. The factory workers/ conscripts/ kislevs in space are looking promising too.

Very impressed with your army, you have managed to take a nicely sculpted, but limited metal guard range and give them a lot of extra character, much more than GW's offcicial attempts.

I'm still working on transitioning the force to 5th edition ie what works, what doesn't. So, if any of you guard generals have come across some great lists, unit options, etc...definately let me know! One thing is for sure, my ratlings will go up to 10 men. Perhaps a Vostroyan pattern chimera too.

Well I like you have an infantry heavy IG army, and what little I've done in 5th tells me that template is king. I noticed a huge boost in the effectiveness of my 9 mortar crews from 4th to 5th ed.

Also mixed emotions over the new vehicle damage table, means my autocannons have had their teeth pulled a bit whilst any vehicle I have has just become slightly more likely not to implode like a tinfoil mockup version of an actual warmachine.

Other than that, I have nothing but encouragement. Keep going, wonderful log brilliant army and an all in all inspiring project. Both this and the Kasr Tannenberg log.

Light of the Emperor

The GT is in November...I have a few months to go thankfully. Plenty of models to add to the force and quite a few lists to try out.

Zzap gun chassis used to be readily available as a 5 dollar bit when GW still had individual bitz for sale. That was taken away so now I would need to buy a 15 dollar blister just to get a single bit. 15 dollars vs 45 dollars for three is a big difference. Thankfully one of my friends started his orks and decided not to use all the gunz he has collected...

Pictures of the autocannons will be up tonight. Whole army shots to follow tomorrow!

why not something like fortifications? they are workers afterall
