Thanks everyone. Your comments, suggestions and help have always been appreciated. This army is what it is currently thanks to alot of help from the Warseer community. It is truely an international effort: I have basilisk wheels from Denmark, models from Canada, rough riders from England, regimental logo from the Netherlands, vox caster from Sweden, officers from Australia...and so on.

@orangesm: it is indeed still artillery themed...just not my tourny lists. The plan now is to get some bombards and medusas!

@the abandoned: The conscript models are Kislevite Kossacks from the fantasy range. I got 10 more coming to me soon but will probably need another 10 more. They were sold as a box set but I guess have since become oop.

I'll have pictures tonight with the three finished ones.

Can't say enough how much I enjoy your project. If I was not knee deep in Steel Legion
you might of caused me to switch to "V's".

How about running your workers as Penal or White Shield so you stay with the codex.
I’m using Forgeworld Renegade IG torsos for Penal Legion troops and it fits and works into the army very nicely.

After reading the Gaunt's Ghost books I always liked the thought of the population/workers forming their own fighting force and joining along side the IG to defend their homes.

For the conscripts/workers there's one very suitable model in the Last Chancers range - with a furry hat, moustache, a vest on bare chest, baggy trousers and a very AK40K looking lasgun... + a large bag. He's standing in my shelf right now ;)

Ah yes, "Demolition Man" is his name. I was gonna get one until GW discontinued their bitz orders.

Anyways, bases need to be finished but I wanted to show these guys:

Is that one of those dreaded Vost. power shovels?

Congrgrads about making the 2000 mark.

Idaan
12-08-2008, 11:00
Well, during the World War One trench raiders from both sides of the conflict used to fight in hand to hand with sharpened shovels. They were much more handy than rifles with bayonets, could be swinged and thrusted and were said to be able to severe a head in one swing. In "All quiet on the Western Front" sergeant Katczinsky uses one I think.

I think I've expressed my awe about your army a few times already, but it won't hurt to do it once again. Great job! And the manufactorum workers are especially nice touch.

I can echo everyone else here, the workers are really rather nice
I'm not sure about the bows on their backs though. I know metal is a $%£& to work with, but maybe make then tools or guns? Bows just seems a little out to me
Loving the army, keep it up!

Hello all,

I just read this whole threat!

It's such a great army! Got some inspiration for my renegade army, Allready bought a Long Tom and definitely want some heavy mortars and Thudd-Guns!

Keep on building this freaking awsome army!!!

WallyTWest
14-08-2008, 14:30
Thought about the bows on the back (had not noticed them). Backpacks could be sculpted or hollowed out and glued to help hide them. It would be easier to cover up such a detail instead of remove them.

Light of the Emperor
14-08-2008, 14:44
I will do better to remove the bows next time. I have a lot of empire rifles so I could just add the stock in place of the the arrows themselves. It'll look like hunting rifles in their gun bags. Some of the bows are just too deep into the model to make it worthwhile.
No one besides me sees the bows anyway as the models are usually facing the opponent. The only time they would be seen is if the models run and Vostroyans never run!!!

And yes, those are dreaded Vostroyan power shovels. My commissar wields one with deadly effect.

Attach some GS sacks to the bow. Then it will just look like another way to carry gear.

The gun rifle idea is by far better. Go with it!

The 11th continues to muster!

I am striving to build the largest Vostroyan army in the USA and I just moved a step closer! A few little details to work out yet but I'm close...The enemies of the Emperor will now fear:

4th platoon: 35 men total with lascannons and plasma guns
5th platoon: 35 men total with heavy bolters and plasma guns
6th platoon: 20 men total heavy weapon platoon with 7 mortars
Armored fist squad
Macharius Battle tank
Baneblade

It is far from over...

your army is fantastic and i know you are going for an artillery theme but nothing says guard like massed ranks of infantry supported by the big guns.

Do it LotE! More infantry looks so good on the battlefield!

Do you have the models for 4th-6th?

The deal is complete! All that mentioned in my last post will now be sent to me sometime this week. That would bring me up to 303 Vostroyan models. I will also now have 3 superheavies...woo!

Currently working on my limited edition collection and a fun and quick army of daemons. Both have current updates...you can check them out in my sig.

ZOMG it works! my posts are now working!.

well honestly this army is great looking but its so easy to beat! lolz. no this army put up more of a darn fight than i thought it would ;) my wolves were gunned down faster than they could make it into close combat, but my Ven. Dread. took out alot of his vossies and popped a couple of tanks. i would suggest next time put some more lascannons in.

Also on a side not i talked to a veteran wolves player and i was interpreting the healing potions wrong, its the same effect as medic for guard.

Light of the Emperor
24-08-2008, 04:42
Great games today!

Ven Dreads annoy me. I'd have won both games had it not been for him. I'll add that to the list of things I hate...and he shall be the first to die next time!
In my defense I thought you were bringing actual 13th company (which have no tanks) so I thought the lascannons would be superfluous. Next time though.

As far as army news goes, I'm trying to match my third leman russ paint job with my other two. It's a bit lighter so I need to go back and try again. I'm also hoping to get my new additions this week sometime.

Here's a problem: The sand on my large 60mm bases is peeling off. It actually curles up off the base. Is that a moisture problem? Should I use super glue instead of PVA?

Colonel Jacka
24-08-2008, 05:31
LotE,

Yep! To much water in your PVA mix. It has to be glugy in texture. Takes a little longer to dry but should fix the issue. Are you using matt vanish as well? That helps to hold the sand as well.

Light of the Emperor
24-08-2008, 13:43
Thanks Jacka.

I use pva directly out of the bottle and then add the sand. Once dry, I prime the entire model. After painting, I also varnish it. Still, on the larger bases, parts of the sand will just curl up right off the base. I do keep my stuff in the basement but I run a de-humidifier. Is it to moist? Or is it because I'm trying to keep it dry?

Could be an idea to mis PVA in to your basecoat for the base colour aswell.

I's what I do and it seems to help.

what i do with sand on my tank treads is super glue first and after that is dry i paint PVA glue with water over the sand to get into all the space inbetween the particles and makes it into cement.

CarniX
28-08-2008, 16:12
And where are the Ogryns??:p

It must be a plaisure to play against such a beautyfull army...

Light of the Emperor
28-08-2008, 17:56
Cheers!

@Pulse, hard94: The most recent army shot is on page 99 and 100. This is everything I currently have. The Macharius and Baneblade and the rest arrive tomorrow.

@CarniX: I've dropped the ogryns. The greenstuff was caked on so I couldn't really get it all off. Hopefully we'll see some true guard ogryns (in plastic) down the line...and with better rules too!

@Inquisitor Konig: Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try that. Perhaps I should score the bases with a knife to give the glue some more areas to stick to? Its not the sand itself that is brushing off the top, its the entire surface that becomes detached from the base itself. I can literally peel the entire sand coating off in one piece with no residue on the base itself. Its very strange and I have no answer for it.

All the new stuff arrives tomorrow. Can't wait!

Inquisitor Konig
28-08-2008, 18:40
oh ok... yeah thats happend to me before too. Infact one time I dropped my Daemon Prince and the only part that "broke" was all the sand fell off still perfectly sruck together in a disc shape... so i just glued the hole thing back on.

Scoring the base sounds like it might help, also try giving the base a scrub first incase it is dusty. Plastic glue wouldnt work would it?

Prepare yourselves, fellow Imperials, for a "superheavy" picture update!

My end of the t-hawk/ Vostroyan deal came in today and its a beauty. Everything will require some work in one form or another, but its all doable. I look forward to continuing!

Note that I did not paint these (yet). The guy I traded with had a rediculously similar paint scheme...

First up is the baneblade, complete with the Graf-General himself!
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_5143.jpg

Then there's the macharius. This is the standard model. However, I will be adding some cannons to create a vulcan pattern.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_5144.jpg

And just a size comparison:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_5145.jpg

Mortars that will form the glorious 6th platoon (heavy weapon platoon):
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_5146.jpg

Light of the Emperor
29-08-2008, 23:17
And some of the conversions that were done. They'll need some work, but I like the direction...
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_5147.jpg

The rest are all sitting here ready to be painted. With my 22nd (a multiple of 11!) birthday coming up next wednesday, it will mark the passing of a second full year of Vostroyan madness!

Cheers!

Hum.... how many platoons are we talking about.. (IE, how hard do the Mordians have to work to catch up?)

I think a before and after shot of the army (arayed and photographed in your city terrain) would be an intresting thing to see. Either way you have your work cut out for you. I am very intrested to know how much you have right now.

Light of the Emperor
01-09-2008, 21:18
Well I have over 300 infantry. That divides into the following:

Regiment (High) Command

Company Command
-Mortar Squad
-Anti Tank Squad (lascannon)
-Special Weapon Squad (demo charge)
-Special Weapon Squad (flamers)
-Special Weapon Squad (meltaguns)

1st Platoon Command (all with heavy bolters and grenade launchers)
-1st Squad
-2nd Squad
-3rd Squad

2nd Platoon Command (all with missile launchers and plasma guns)
-1st Squad
-2nd Squad
-3rd Squad

3rd Platoon Command (all with autocannons and plasma guns)
-1st Squad
-2nd Squad
-3rd Squad

4th Platoon Command (all with heavy bolters and plasma guns)
-1st Squad
-2nd Squad
-3rd Squad

5st Platoon Command (2 with missile launchers, 2 with lascannons and plasma guns)
-1st Squad
-2nd Squad
-3rd Squad

6th Platoon Command
-1st Squad (3 mortars)
-2nd Squad (3 mortars)

Heavy Mortar Battery (3 guns)
Thudd Gun Battery (3 guns)
Thudd Gun Battery (3 guns)

I actually plan on fleshing out the background quite a bit. All platoons will have names and history as well as named characters leading them. This will all be put into a "mini codex" along with my 1750 point list and handed out to my opponents at the GT along with a purity seal.

I read a little while back that you needed some ideas for "workers" well some of the Wildmen of Dunland for LOTR might work with a little bit of conversion.... or maybe Corsair Bo'Sun and Captain and corsairs of Umbar. Really LOTR has a lot that I could see could be converted to work as workers. Just a thought hope it helps.

LoTR is too small scale wise, vossies are the same are size as marines and LoTR is smaller than regular guard.

Beatomadic
05-09-2008, 01:38
Yeah I guess you are right never looked at one beside the other, he could use a few for "smaller guys" if he wanted XP

Light of the Emperor
05-09-2008, 04:00
Thanks for the suggestion! Its not so much that the LotR models are small, its that the Vostroyans are so big! They almost dwarf space marines so much so that a CC melee just looks kinda rediculous. How GW messed up the scaling, I do not know. I had the idea of having Death Korp allies but scratched that idea after I realized how big the difference was.

With the help of a good friend, I got my hands on a box of kislev kossacks. They are being converted to "workers" as we speak.
I just need to finish up some commission work and then I can finally get back to the Vostroyans!

Tves
05-09-2008, 20:22
Perhaps some of the privateer press models from the Khador range could fit. Although they are not GW GT friendly.

Again, wonderous army, brilliantly painted in its epic entirety. Almost has me going for Vossies, to bad I already have a 170+ strong infantry guard army.

Light of the Emperor
05-09-2008, 20:59
Yeah, I refrain from non-GW models as I do tend to go to GTs and other big tournies.

And Tves, you really can't have enough IG! Get some Vostroyans and fight for the Emperor!

Here are some heavily converted workers who will form a new unit (rules and name yet to be devised):
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_5208.jpg

Squad as a whole (thus far). I'm looking for 20 so I need 7 more:

Yeah, well considering that they put a 2.5 hour game length limit on the local 1500 GT tourny and I have around 150 troopers in my 1500 points list it does become problematic.

As for having enough IG...there is no such thing. Seriously thinking about getting perhaps a couple of vossys to paint for fun.

But enough of that. Really love the flamer in that squad. Now how about getting us some in action pictures of the army in that jummy looking City terrain you have in your gaming room.

razormasticator
06-09-2008, 03:22
Man, and I thought my 7 squads of troopers was alot. Thats only about 120 models all told when you throw the mortars, lascannons, missle launchers & autocannon teams as well as the snipers and the meltagun sw squads. Plus the Regimental Command and 2 Command Squads I have.

I think I need a third Command Squad It seems.

06-09-2008, 17:44
Maybe you could use constrips rules for the workers. Seems like it would fit them.

Gorman
07-09-2008, 13:22
Just thought I would show my appreciate for the workers as well. They are really well done and a good idea; plus, rules-wise, they will probably work pretty well for a Vostroyan gun-line (in that they can provide mobile 4+ cover saves for your more expensive troop squads - just keep them out of combat!).

What about using some Empire militia and converting their heads, adding furs etc? They have archaic-looking guns you could add scopes and so on to (perhaps ammo packs as well), and with a little work they could look reasonably Vostroyan. I would have to say they wouldn;t look anywhere near as good as Kislev Kossars though.

Rabid Bunny 666
07-09-2008, 13:40
Cool, like the workers, but the axes look out of place, perhaps if you could replace them with Dwarf Miner pickaxes it would look a bit more in place.

Light of the Emperor
07-09-2008, 21:10
@Gorman: Yeah, I've raided from the Empire kits alot. I've used heads, torsos, weapons, even the mechanical cherub. Some good stuff that fits right in with the Vossies.

@RabidBunny666: I don't mind the axes but I try to convert most of 'em. I only left them because the axe was fused with half the face and I lack the necessary green stuff skills!

Finished my third leman russ:

Cheers Firestorm! Not a bad model! One of these days, I'll find some GW model to convert into a female Vostroyan. Obviously she cannot be a soldier as only the Firstborn sons can serve. However, she could be an aid, medic or even a commissar.

The workers are VERY WIP, but they are getting there.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_5218.jpg

The commissar will be taking over duties in third platoon which houses all the autocannons (considering he's standing on an autocannon magazine). He also appears to be reading from the primer. I'm painting that the same way as the actual copy I own. So, if that platoon command squad ever needs to take moral checks, I'll read some litanies before I make the roll.

And now one of the greatest FW pieces ever...the Minotaur!

Where have you been all my life?!!
It's based on the Malcador chassis and thus, a Russ chassis (my favorite). It carries 2 earthshaker cannons and probably boasts two structure points. It's the perfect piece for my artillery army!
Besides the Minotaur, I still want two Bombards and need two more thudd guns.

And we soldier on...

Finally decided to start working on the banners. That's my first real attempt at freehand. Hopefully that will improve as I move along. Eventually every banner in the army will get some sort of relevant banner artwork. That's 13 banners and counting!
I'm also finishing up another commissar so pictures will be posted when he's done.

Has the Emporer descended from the golden throne to live in the Vostroyan log or will he be in the limited thread? He would make an excellent inquisitor lord IMO. The Malcador is looking nice, the twin great cannons look good as they do on your Russes. Also the workers rabble look good, nice free hand on the banner. Keep up the good work!

Where did you get the figure of the Emperor from? Was it a limited edition?

It's a sculpt by someone or other...you see it on eBay occasionally. Not GW approved, and, according to ma brotha' Agis N, not a very good sculpt. I was never impressed by it myself.

Blasfemos is a Spanish company that sells a variety of gaming stuff. They had a collection of models sculpted on their behalf which "closely resembled" the Emperor and his Primarchs. The Emperor for example, was called "The Golden Knight". Horus was called "The Fallen Son". Definate breach of IP...haven't seen the models on the site recently so who knows.

The model itself isn't bad. It is scaled correctly, but does have some weak details in areas. Nothing I can't work around though. Worth the money? Don't know. I got mine under special circumstances so I can't complain. For the advertised price of 60 US dollars, you could just as easily sculpt or convert your own.

With the Emperor, I instantly have a pre-heresy Imperial Army. The Vostroyans are very similar to the pictures in the "Collected Visions" book. All the plasma, thudd guns and malcador helps too!

Still, the Emperor is basically making a Cameo in this thread. He'll be used for some fun games but otherwise he'll have a starring role in my display cabinet.

Work on the Macharius continues. I should have it completed by tomorrow.

With the GT getting ever closer (2 months!) I am starting to develop army lists and background materials. I will definately need the help of the Warseer community in both of those areas so stay tuned!

The Macharius is complete only for the picture to show me I forgot to shade the parchment. The only reason its there is because I had to cover a casting impurity.

He's also getting a banner as well as a driver who is converted from the trooper holding a mortar round.

When I get him on his base, I'll really mess with the pictures so that it isn't as washed out. Bear with me fellow citizens!

The gold took forever. I didn't want it too bright so a few different kinds of washes helped I guess. There were some issues with the model, particularly the face. His left side wasn't as defined (sculpt wise) so I had to hand paint the shadows and recesses to match his right side.

I received the Macharius with that stuff already glued on. Upon further inspection the stuff I broke off was white so its either pumice or very fine model railroad slate. I usually use basic modelling sand on my tracks.

Er, not to be too harsh or anything, but the Freehand on that flag sort of looks like, well, a giant grey condom. Just sayin'. Not too sure how you'd go about fixing it, though. It's supposed to be a tank shell Cannon, right? Since your other (and much better, IMO) freehand flag was the shovel for the workers.

(Of course, if it's a statment about that tank's crew, then by all means... :p)

Huh, the image never even crossed my mind. That's what the sterotypical cannon looks like though. I'll round out some details and add a few more things to it as the banner looks a bit barren anyway. I'll try to make it look like the cannons on the tank itself and probably add the laurels along the outside.

The goal is to improve with each banner so we'll see what happens.

Maybe if you did the back end of the cannon flatter or more angular, and the general shape less bulging you could avoid the condom-syndrome? Look for example to the plastic great cannon for WHFB for reference. Or google for old cannons. Some models are pretty straight and "flat".

Rally Vostroya!

The Baltimore GT is coming up in 2 weeks. Once again I am behind on everything. You think after 4 of these tournaments I'd be a bit smarter. After constantly play testing various lists I decided to go with (what I call) my 2nd edition themed army. Russ, hellhound, rough riders, wheeled chassis, squats, thudd guns and lots of banners...all of which were around back in 2nd.
The thudd guns count as mortars while the unfinished tech enginseer squad will count as an Inquisitor with psychic hood, 3 familiars, 1 hierophant and 2 mystics (BfM fence links). The inquisitor helps me in two areas. His hood will help ward off psychic attacks while the mystics can help with the now numerous deepstriking units.

To Do List:
1 Veteran with plasma gun
2 familiars
2 mystics
1 hierophant
1 hellhound with extra armor
Army wide touchups (especially the bases)

I also need to build and paint my banner stand so it will be a busy two weeks!
Onwards, for honor, Vostroya and Him on earth!

If your camera allows it, you should work with "aperture priority" mode and set the aperture to the lowest possible value (the aperture value is given as f/X where you have to set X to the maximum allowed value). This will increase the depth of field, but you'll need a tripod or a steady surface to put on your camera to take the pic, as the camera will compensate the little aperture with a longer exposure time.

Oh, the models looks great as usual LoTE! :D

I still need to paint a hierophant, but the rest is done:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_5352.jpg

So that's an inquisitor with psychic hood, 2 mystics, 1 hierophant and 3 familiars. This unit has two purposes: protect me from deepstrikes and hinder enemy psychic powers. They have no upgrades bar the psychic hood so they will be hidden far behind my lines but next to something important that can blow a deepstriking unit to bitz should I "see" them.

A camera focus' through to functions; one is shudder speed, two is lence length/type. A pin hole camera has basically no lense but if still will focus it self and basically all distances available. The longer the camera exposes its picture for the less light it needs. This needs everything to be perfectly still though since any movement shows up as motion blur. Think of time lapse city shots, everything is normally in focus if it doesn't move. To through all that off though is the world of focal length. some lense wont allow alot of depth. If you stand back far and zoom in you have less focus range (depth of field) thats when you only get maybe a shoulder pad in focus or even worse; the guy behing the one you want to show. The closer the camera is to the model the more likely you are to get more in focus- to a point. a macro allows things closer to to the lense to stay in focus. the closer you get to it the harder on most cameras it is to focus. with most standard cameras you have to try and replicate its natural disctanse, and they are designed to shoot people from several feet away- but minis are tiny so its harder. I play at about arms length and crop 80% of mine out after just take the pics at the largest setting. This isn't ideal but I get a decent dinamic range.

Oh and the rapier is wicked, I forget if you have any taranchulas? I really like the cannons on the leman russ'.

I am pleased to announce that I placed 23rd overall at the GT. The Vostroyan 11th was also the top guard army in terms of battle points and overall score which makes me very happy! Ironically, I finished battle on table 11!

I had 66 battle points, a perfect 50 in sportsmanship, 33 in appearance, 2 favorite opponent votes and I finished second in player's choice with 6. The overall score for me was 149.

Game 1: Chaos Daemons: Objectives (3 I believe)
I played against the eventually 4th place finisher. 3 soulgrinders and 8 blood crushers amongst other things...yeah, nothing of mine left after turn 5. Massacre.

Game 2: Space Marines: Kill points
I feared kill points coming into the tourny. After all the dust settled, I took out about 8 of his killpoints and he only destroyed a single remnant squad. Thank you terrain! Massacre for me.

Game 3: Eldar: 5 Objectives
A tough game. My ratlings killed an avatar in two turns and my lone sentinel wounded a wraithlord twice...in close combat! I ended up having double the number of objectives. Massacre for me.

Game 4: Saim Hann: 2 Objectives (see video above)
This was a fun game. Rough Riders got a lance charge on a warlock jetbike unit and farseer. The eldar were routed and escorted off the table. He had one wave serpent with dire avengers left. Had the game gone one more turn, I would have had a massacre. So I settled for a Major Victory.

Game 5: Nidzilla: Killpoints
Yeah...not the best combo. Outflanking stealers blew up my russ, sentinal and hellhound and the gaunts decided to hide and do nothing. I wounded the big bugs as best I could but in the end I lost by one kill point. Minor Loss.

All in all it was a fun time. I am very happy with how the Vostroyans performed. It exceeded my expectations. Maybe I need to read from my uplifting primer more often!

When I got home, I found a package on my desk. I opened it to find a nice letter asking me to return an 'ol girl to fighting glory. And by girl I mean baneblade. Yes, a free baneblade donated to the Vostroyan cause.
So thank you Snakebite for the wonderful gift. She will be up and running by the end of the year! Pictures will follow.

Rally the colors, men of Vostroya! Glory to you and Him on earth!

You're very welcome! I'm looking forward to pictures and to hearing how she's doing.

They are in fact Zzap gun chassis parts. To my knowledge LotE has stripped most of North America bare of them in his quest to field IG heavy weapons that look cool. In a moment of amusement, I found myself looking through an odds and ends bin at Gencon simply in the hopes that I'd see one.

Your best bet (baring insane amounts of trading) is to find a similiar bit part and go with those. IIRC Light wanted the consistency thing but didn't realize it until AFTER he'd modeled some on Zapguns.

As so many people have said this army is one of the few truly inspirational ones out there, and indeed it has inspired me to start my own Vostroyan force after Christmas.

Like you I plan on doing an artillery based army, though I wonder how much it will resemble your army as there are some amazing ideas here that I will most definately have to pay homage to.

as ive seen when playing against LotE he doesn't use the WD vossie rules but he just uses them as plain guard out of the codex with doctrines.

We just got power back after 4-5 days... and we're the lucky ones. NH does have some bad areas. Some won't see power until Christmas.

@rcal13: Thanks for the link! I shall check it out.

@riddlecakes: The Vostroyans use doctrines from the IG codex (which will be gone soon anyways). I believe they have die hard, carapace armor, sharpshooter and heavy weapon platoons...but I may be wrong.
I myself only use iron discipline and camo cloaks (in a tourny setting). Every so often I like to try out the carapace armor.

@Saul Tarvitz: Thank you. Its a good time to start an IG army as the codex is set to be out sometime next year. I would suggest sticking with units that will be guaranteed to stay (somewhat) the same like the platoons, russ, etc. I know we will gain tanks, but I have a feeling some units will be going...please not the ratlings! If you have any questions or ideas, feel free to PM me. I'm always happy to talk and help.

@Ravensclaw: Yes (but not atm) and Yes.

All the hectic work around here ends soon so I will be able to devote more time to things. Check out my other logs for recent works.
Now that power is back, I want to pick a good day to airbrush my baneblades but with ice and snow in the forcast, who knows when that will happen. I did however get a chimera from a friend so it will be up shortly.

Cheers!

Wow, read all 109 pages of this log, and I'm stunned! This is some amazing work, especially considering how many guardsmen you have painted, and how consistently you do it! Keep up the good work!

I do have one question though; how do you paint your faces, I like how simple they are and how great they look from a distance for minimal work. It looks like scorched brown base, but I'm not sure about the rest. I'm a terrible face painter so this could help me a ton!

Thanks!

To date I think the only info that LotE has given re:faces is here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1587845&highlight=face#post1587845). It seems like it's just a minimalist painting, using the same colors as any other exposed skin (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2492320&highlight=skin#post2492320).

Yes it has been a while...

Working 10 hour days hasn't helped much and its frigid here in the northeast so priming is at a standstill. Work is being diverted to my golden daemon entries as well as the Ravenwing.

However, I did not stand completely idle. The Vostroyans now have a strong imperial ally in the form of 1750 points of Grey Knights!

There are still some minor details that need to be finished such as writing on scrolls. They are all shaded and such but once again I am thwarted by the wonders of flash and light.

VOSTROYA! DELIVERANCE, WHY'VE YOU EVER FORGOTTEN ME?

Alas, the Firstborn have not been forgotten! The forges and factories on the windswept planet glow with a firey light as the furnaces swell with heat and metal. New weapons come forth and become the armament of a new founding. Gloria Imperator, the Firstborn stand!

The new tidbits from the upcoming IG codex are wonderful pieces of news to hear. New tank varients, especially in the artillery section, have me all flustered. Based on what I've read, my three main Leman Russ battletanks now become 1 heavy support slot which leaves me some openings. From the information I've gathered, there are only three other russ varients that interest me: Punisher, Vanquisher and Executioner.
I just received a toy gatling gun piece which is the perfect fit for a russ turret. The vanquisher has always been a favorite of mine and the Executioner now has a much better gun (rules wise) than the current FW version.

The hellhound took a slight hit but will remain in my force. The devildog is what I'm waiting for. Along with armored sentinals, it makes for the perfect mobile tank hunter...something which my IG force lacks.

Now the artillery tanks...THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT! The Colossus is basically a bombard (my favorite) and I will definately pick one or two up. The Medusa is quite the artillery piece too and should see action. It seems though, with all these new goodies, the workhorse basilisk may become a bit underused. It's also great to see the return of the Griffon. Alas, I already have 3 FW heavy mortars which do the same thing but are cheaper.

There's a lot of talk about platoon make up which makes me hesitant to start working on my 4th. Perhaps I should wait until I'm able to figure out how the platoons can be armed. Rumors persist of 3 special weapon or 3 heavy weapon squads.

My current ratlings will finally become actual sniper squads which means I'll have to pick up some of the great new ratling sculpts...and add some mustaches and fur hats of course.

Advisors...my commissars may become useful again. The new astropaths and fleet officer are great as well. While the master of ordinance model doesn't fit my force, a converted version will definately appear.

I guess its time to take stock in what I have:

5 ork lobbas (for mortar heavy weapon platoon)
7 mortars
2 zzap gun chassis for misc weapons
22 guardsmen
5 plasma
1 melta
13 gunners/spotters
7 officers/sgts
1 engineseer
1 chimera
1 baneblade

And here they are:

Thanks everyone. It's great to see some familiar faces...err, usernames, again.

Thanks to my friend Ghostmaker12, I have a russ on the way which will become (perhaps) the first punisher in the New England area! Once he's converted, all three tanks will be sprayed with my new airbrush.

Sir_Lunchalot:
Great to see ya. I could use a Zulu cliche line to explain my victories but it really comes down to two things: # of units and cover.

I have next to no upgrades or wargear options which means I can field more varieties of units to deal with different threats. My successful GT army (23rd overall, highest IG placement in the US) had hardened vets, ratlings, two platoons with a variety of weapons, hellhound, rough riders, inquisitor/mystics, 1 sentinal and 2 russ. Steiner, Getz, Lord Cook and other IG tactician masters probably groan at some of my selections but they worked! The sheer amount and variation of stuff forces the opponent to pick units to focus on and sometimes they aren't the right ones!

Cover is the other big piece. With the camo cloak upgrade (my one big investment), I'm getting 3+ cover saves for the most part.

My artillery list is themed to my army background and doesn't do too bad either. With the new 'dex, there will be some great help coming!

@Snakebite:
My army comes from the city/state of Yekatrinburg so I might relate the name to that somehow. Vostroya also has a patron saint "The Gray Lady" so it may be that. I'll delve into it more when the time comes to paint the name on the finished product!

Saul Tarvitz

Very very pleased to see this log up and running again, this army is one of the reasons that Warseer is so great. I know I'd pledged to do a Vostroyan army too, but its not viable at the moment, though I will do one some day. Your army serves as constant inspiration.[/grovelling]

As the real city of Ekaterinburg is in the Sverdlovskaya Oblast I wonder if you might at all be able to incorporate that into the army. I don't know if its do-able but it'll certainly be interesting to see if you can.

Looking forward to seeing your take on the Baneblade and the new Russ' when they become a reality.

Right, time for an update:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_5589.jpg

Tank Commander Jens Kirov:
While his personal life remains an enigma to most men of the regiment, Kirov's exploits in battle are the stuff of legend. As a cadet nearly sixty years ago, he was the only member of his Leman Russ tank crew to survive a brutal ork ambush on Katral. Manning the left heavy bolter until it overheated, Kirov then proceeded to pull ork after ork through the mangled top hatch and dispatch them with his Vostroyan bayonet. It is rumored that recovery crews had to cut open the hull to free Kirov as the press of dead ork bodies were too great for him to climb out.

He was rewarded with command of his own Russ "Martyr of the Lady". The next decades saw various engagements including Medusa V and a violent trench war on Despair. It was on this last world that the regiment stumbled upon a forgotten, half buried storage unit. Within its walls were the dormant hulls of several executioner pattern Leman Russ tanks, mothballed for centuries by the Departmento Munitorium. Among the tanks lie an even older version, not seen since the dreaded Horus Heresy: the Malcador. Granted to Kirov, the Malcador was renamed "Martyr of the Lady" to honor his trusty russ from years before. He still commands this mount in present times. Guardsmen exchange whispered stories of seeing the tank in action amidst the rubble of Kasr Tannenberg though none can confirm if Kirov is actually present.

Jens Kirov was bestowed one more grand honor in late 995 M41. The most able commander of a machine be it tank, artillery or transport is given possession of a relic called "The Flame of the Forge". Bright, heated flame burns from its irons representing the same fires that drive the mighty forges on Vostroya. It is carried into battle and improves the moral of the men close to it as they feel the fire of Vostroya fill their hearts. With renewed determination, infantrymen, tankers and artillery crews fight on in the name of the Emperor.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/Wicked_Cold/100_5590.jpg

And for those wondering, Kirov is a converted General Grizmund model from FW.

Wow. Thats a really long journey of making that army and a whole lot of man hours. I joined this forum for the sole reason of this thread. When I first saw this while looking up Vostroyans on the web, I was inspired to make my skimpy 1000 pt Vossie army a hell of a lot bigger. I used the traditional red scheme, but I like it. They match my Blood Angels:D.

This journey will never end wll it? And if it does, you will probably feel empty inside huh"?

I want to include a mechanicum conscripts unit in my army with a techpriest, a few oop squats, some servitors, and some skitari(using high elf archer legs, cadian torsos and arms, and variuos hooded heads). What do you think?

BTW how long is that basilisk because I want to do that but I dont want a 15 inch model that doesnt fit in the Deployment zone.

SonOFSanguinius

Since Kirov was a hvy bolter gunner in the past that is the perfect tank for him.

Lord Cook
28-02-2009, 03:12
Steiner, Getz, Lord Cook and other IG tactician masters probably groan at some of my selections but they worked!

Lol. Steiner would tell you to take whatever you thought was cool. Getz and I are fairly middle ground, but we disagree on tactics anyway. You'd need Malchek if you wanted competitiveness-above-everything GT standard lists. I'm sure we'd all be flattered by your praise in any case .

And for those wondering, Kirov is a converted General Grizmund model from FW.

Damn it! Recognised ol' Grizmund instantly and got through your whole post thinking I was going to look oh so clever to have spotted it... then you go and let everyone know ;).

Anyway, brilliant work with the Malcador. The heavy bolter pillbox version has to be one of my favourite tanks, and you've really done it full justice.

jdp
28-02-2009, 03:38
The Malcador look great with its new TC sticking out of that hatch. Kirov is a top notch conversion and worthy of commanding a big hunk of resin. He feels like a Vostroyan TC, I don't know if its the brass armor or what, but he is just right, not forced like some conversions feel. Top shelf work once again.

How has the Malcador played for you? While it is a cool looking model I have wondered how effective it is slugging it out on the tabletop.

Light of the Emperor
28-02-2009, 04:12
It's Lord Cook! Ahhhhtennnnnn-SHUN! I am quite a fan of the Malcador myself. It's really grown on me. Grizmund was actually slated for a baneblade or the Macharius but I decided to give him to my favorite vehicle.

jdp: The Malc has seen battle but it rarely earned its points back. It usually gets stunned into submission which does leave my other tanks free reign. Its claim to fame is landing a demolisher shell onto a squad of death company. Perhaps with the addition of Kirov she'll do better!

101st Vostroyan: Great username! Glad you like the 11th. I like your ideas too...I'll send a PM your way.

My second techpriest engineseer is up next!

And a list of my tank names:
"Martyr of the Lady" -Malcador (based on the patron saint of Vostroya)
"The Grey Lady" -Basilisk (see above)
"Guilliman's Decree" -Leman Russ
"Vostroya's Honor" -Leman Russ
"Firstborn's Vow" -Leman Russ
"unnamed" -Baneblade
"unnamed" -Macharius
"unnamed" -Chimera

May I humbly suggest the name Lux Dei Imperator for your Baneblade?

This looks tupping luvverly, such a characterful vehicle and its just fits in so well with the vibe of the Vostroyan models with their olde worlde charm.

I have to agree that it would be remiss for you to not use 'Light of the Emperor' somewhere in the name of one of your tanks, and a Baneblade makes sense unless you have plans to later add a Hellhound to the force.

The 11th Vostroyan made an appearance at Danger Planet down in Waltham, MA for a 1750 point tourny. I'm happy to say that I took Best Overall! I won all three games that went down to the wire. First was against another guard force so ordinance was flying everywhere. Funnily enough, as an objective based game (4 total) there were almost no troops left on either side. I managed to hold one and contest another with rough riders.

Second game was against space wolves with the mission where you put your single objective as far into your corner as possible. Yeah, that one. Obviously with my guard I couldn't make it to his but he failed to leave a unit on his objective. His rhinos rushed towards mine but stopped just short with one of my infantry squads holding on.

Third game was against daemons. My hardened veterans were heroes. They brough plaguebearer squads down to size, destroyed a blue horrors unit in shooting and CC as well as killing a bloodTHIRSTER in H2H. (The squad has 2 plasma and a lascannon btw).

Great day all around with fun opponents and cool armies. I'm definately going back. Plus, I got to see Tinfoil's awesome conversions in person. That was worth the trip alone. If you haven't seen his log on here, check it out!

They had a sale there too and I came away with some great deals including RT era librarian and terminators still in blister:

Well deserved and congratulations on the tournament win, LotE! I have to say, this army looks stunning in person.
This shot does not do your work justice, but here's a (partial) army shot from the tournament:

Now, let's get a game scheduled!

Because LotE wont toot his own horn I would like to point out that durring the presentation of the trophie the tourni manager said The winner of the overall tourniment so throughly dominated in this catagory that he won by 6 points. All other catagories came down to tie breakers between 2, 3 and 4 players.

PS
Whats the plaque say I cant see it in the pic?

Man, Thats awesome that people have donated so much to your army. That would be awesome to have people donate Vostroyans to me.

:DAnyway, I'd like to ask what the blister pack in the center of your photo contains out of curiosity. It looks like it says Space marines on the top but Im not sure.
I love your army, and its great that you are adding more artillary to your artillary company.:chrome:

Great job! Sounds like your tourney win was a crushing victory

Thanks guys!

@Ancient_Conflict: The Emperor model is made by Ronin miniatures I believe. They are somewhat hard to come by...

@101st: The blister is an unopened RT era Terminator librarian and bodyguard.

Finally had the nice weather and the time to break out the airbrush. Basecoats all around!

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m118/Fighta_Bomma/100_5645.jpg

Two russ will be up shortly. I've already done further work on the punisher but I am continuously annoyed by the fact I can never get the colors to match with my other tanks. The basecoat never seems right and no matter how I wash or drybrush, the overall look is never the same. Painting all this armor might take a while...

Xarius

try mixing pots of all your custom colours, just make lots when you finally get it right, also is that the RT librarinan in thunder armour with a nemesis blade/halbared thing

Light of the Emperor
29-03-2009, 19:02
I did actually mix a whole batch of the custom color...but it just never translates well. Perhaps my first mix had something else in it, but it has been forgotten.
The librarian is in terminator armor...kinda like the old grey knights.

Here are the other two:

Hi there Lightof..

I would not worry too much if your paints dont match exactly.. It happens in real life to.. I've never seen a tank or vehicle yet in an army that is exactly the same colour due to sun fading, different batches of paint, weather conditions at time of applying paint etc etc..

So variation makes your vehicles more realistic..

Fantastic army and models you have here, very inspirational..

Best wishes,

Carl

Rally, my British friends!
If any of you happen to be going to the FW Open Day this weekend, would someone be so kind as to pick up the DK commissar on steed for me? I will gladly pay his price plus extra for the effort. I'm not able to get around to any FW attended events this year and don't want to miss out on him. PM me and we can discuss some more!
Thank you!

Well, I've heard the glorious news that rough riders get to keep their power lances. Even better, they get to carry assault weapons too! That special character Kamir seems interesting too. I remember him from the 2nd ed codex. I have an Empire elector count who fits in perfectly with the rough riders. Looks like I'll paint him up along with a meltagunner or something.

Has anyone had a chance to play the new guard yet and if so, how do they handle?

My tanks await another basecoat that is darker than what I orignally sprayed. In the meantime, I hope to finish my confessor model.

Updates this weekend!

EDIT: The GTs are gone for 2009! What madness is this?!

On a better note, my FW order came in and I immediately set about creating Commissar Caine!

I used the FW Krieg Commissar. First step was to remove the head but spare the hat. I then added a space marine sgt head that was ground down to fit the scale. My greenstuff abilities leave a bit to be desired but it should look fine when I'm done with it.

LotE, it's incredible your log is still running after more than 2,5 years, but it's even harder to believe that it's still awesome...

And yet you continue to amaze! I'm looking forward to seeing Cain, I'm a huge fan of the books and I love your work, so the synergy should be interesting. Good start anyway, the Krieg Commissar does actually look the part (although, realistically, Cain should actually be modelled hiding somewhere... :p Are you planning on doing everyone's favourite Commissarial Aide as well?

Thanks Xarius. I found somebody who can help me. We'll find out tomorrow.

Thank you Ivan! It's also great that ya'll keep coming back with more suggestions and comments.

I don't have the points for Cain, but his stats are just like a regular commissar...perhaps with increased weapon skill as he is an expert swordsman.

Weapons: laspistol, chainsword (rending)

Rules:
"Lead from the front! You first!" : when fighting in close combat, Cain makes every attempt to get out of the way of larger, scarier opponents. In game terms, Cain may allocate wounds to anyone within an inch of him as he shoves...err...I mean inspires, others to greater glory.

"Close Call": Cain always manages to find his way out of dangerous situations. His save is invulunerable.

"They got all the guns!": Cain will never execute a member of a squad.

"Duck!": Cain is supernaturally fast...when diving for cover. Cain's cover save is increased by +2.

I'd actually use him as a commisar lord as his surivabliity outstrips that of most commisars and with the additional abilities (increase his points by 30-50pts) this should truely reflect how good he is in the books

also being a Commi Lord he then gets to be placed where you think is best (he thinks is safest)

Funny rules for Cain!

Lead from the front is my favorite one. Just like him to have as many bodies in between him and the enemy.

Want to see him painted,

I like the rules for Cain, but you should change the execution rule to

"Heroic" presence: Cain (and any squad led by him) can automatically choose to pass or fail any morale or pinning test they have to take

And what about Jurgen? you have to include the pariah with a meltagun! I'm thinking veteran stats, WS3 BS3 S3 T3 W1 I3 A2 Ld8 and the following rules:

Sidekick: Jurgen is always taken with Cain forming a two man unit. They can still join another unit, for protection.

Pariah: Jurgen is a psychic null, no psychic powers may be used or target an area within six inches of Jurgen. Line of sight for Psychic powers may pass through this area. Also, all psykers within 6 inches have their leadership reduced to 7, unless it would normally be less.

Reckless driving: if Jurgen is embarked in a Chimera, he may drive, the vehichle now counts as fast, but must take a difficult terrain test if it moves over 12 inches.

And of course he is equipped with a meltagun.

The rules for Cain were made up by myself and others in the background section of this forum.
Cheers Sir Lunchalot, I shall get to Jurgen too. I might have to take some of those...probably combine "they got all the guns" with the choose to pass/fail rule.

So, here is converted Cain:
It took some dremelling but the marine head was carved down to scale. My GS of the hair is ok, but definately not the best. To get a scaled chainsword, I used a serated Vostroyan bayonet and added greenstuff!

if you can mike i'd layer on some more gs on the hair and give it some texture by running the tip of your hobby knife or a needle at a downward angle from the bottom of the hair up to give it a layered texture feeling. I can always help you out personally with this if you need it.

Cain looks ace and so do the cyclops.
