View Full Version : [BFG] Starting BFG: Help needed!

Hello guys,

so a friend and I are considering to start BFG. I downloaded all the pdf's availabe at specialist games and started reading a bit. Nevertheless I'm still a complete Noob considering BFG, so bear with me.

Anyway, I got a few questions on various aspects of the game:

First, the battlefleet choice. He has already settlet on Eldar, I myself am still considering one of the following:

- Space Marine Battleflett
- Chaos Battlefleet
- Imperial Battlefleet

It'd be great if someone could roughly explain the strengths, weaknesses and overall specifications of each of the 3 battlefleets. I got more questions for later. Thanks in advance.

i think the both of you should go together on the starter set and each take either imperial or chaos
the starter set is a tremendous buy and both of these fleets serves as the benchmark for other fleets in the game
with four cruisers each, you both can have 1000 points fleets in no time.

imperial: straight ahead play with better front armour and front torpedoes
chaos: slightly faster and better ranged than imperial. jack of all traits, master of none.
space marines: tough armour all around but weapons are at limited ranges. excell in close range shoots and boarding.
eldar: fast and deadly but fragile like kites

I would agree with Fracas, buy the starter set which is excellent and learn the game with the 2 starter fleets and then move onto fleets you really like.

Thanks for the headsup guys, but unfortunately buying the starter set is not a likely thing for me.
Fact is, one of my gaming buddies, has some imperial and chaos ships lieing around. As he doesn't expect to use them in near nor far future, he offered them to me for fairly cheap conditions (otherwise I would probably not be inclined to start BFG).
So it comes down, which battlefleet to choose and take. Also the other player I mentoned before, has already started collecting an eldar battlefleet (formost due to aesthetic reasons).
The SM battlefleet might be an option as a secondary force if I get hooked on the game.

So, any more in deepth thoughts on either Imperial Navy or Chaos Battlefleet?

if you're opponent is playing eldar, choose imperial.
one ofthe advantages of marines is that some of your weapons cause critical hits on a 4+.
eldar take critical hits on a 4+ anyway.

In which case i would take the imperial fleet, much greater access to torpedos which are good for disrupting the eldar players movment especially if it forces them to use there slower movement rates. Other than that its down to personal pref i would go with the imperials if i couldn't decide simply because i prefer the look of the imperial ships

i would have recommended chaos for their better range

Of the three fleets you listed, having either played them or played against them all, I would recommend Chaos as the "best" of the three.

Chaos has range and speed versus the other two.

Chaos in my experience is the easier fleet to learn with, it is forgiving and allows a more stand off play style.

But choose a fleet you like for play style, minis, background fluff, etc.

If you want to be an ass and kill eldar like there is no tomorrow, go with chaos, and their carnage class ships.. its brutal vs eldar..

But imperial are somewhat fun to.. but I got about 3000 pts chaos so.. ;)

Ok, I'm still a bit undecided, so an other question concerning chaos:

You can give certain ships a mark of chaos for a certain point cost:

Khorne = 2x bording value
Nurgle = +1 dmg point, no bording
Slaanesh = -2 moral value
Tzeentch = 1 re-roll

I'm not familiar with the game mechanics, so is any of those recommended?
I like the idea of god specific ships. Lots of conversion potential. (http://us.games-workshop.com/games/bfg/hobby/showcase/chaos.htm)

Nurgle is allways useful, 1 more hit before you are crippled, but otherwise I dont use marks, not relly worth the points imho..

rather get more ships but if i want for fluff reasons or coolness, i'd go with nurgle as being the easiest to use

I make extensive use of the mark of Tzeentch. Rerolls are extremely useful, and combined with my habit of squadroning my cruisers means that my fleet usually does what I want it to do, when I want them to do it. Personally I find that the Mark of Khorne and Slaneesh run rather counter to the stand off and shoot nature of my fleet (I can't remember the last time I tried to pull off a boarding action...) but the Mark of Nurgle is good, if a little pricey.
