View Full Version : [BFG] Newbie Armageddon Fleet list

I already posted this on SG's forum. Thought I'd try here too.

Iíve just started putting together the Imperial ships I got with BFG and Iím planning my fleets. I have a Strike Cruiser for use in Epic so I thought Iíd give an Armageddon Fleet a whirl. Comments on the following welcome:

Admiral 100
Mars battle cruiser 270
Dictator cruiser 220
Lunar cruiser 180
Lunar cruiser 180
Gothic cruiser 180
Strike cruiser 145
Marine cobras *3 105
Firestorm frigates *3 120

Total 1500 pts

I havenít actually played the game yet so I donít exactly know what Iím doing ;) Iím just planning what else to buy. Does this fleet look vaguely respectable?

Tactics are something along the lines of the Mars and Dictator sitting back and popping off ordnance, the three other cruisers go and attack things and the Marine ships go and do whatever it is Marines do. Detailed plan, I know :p

i assume you play SM in epic then?
why the armageddon fleet rather than a SM fleet?

The Mars is not nessecarily the best choice - even though to a new player it is attractive. IMO taking another Dictator and putting the points saved towards more escorts will not hurt you.

I think the fleet is a decent fleet otherwise.

The Marine ships are good at punching a hole in the enemy fleet and then sending out boarding parties. Use the Marine ships to go after hard targets and attack their critical systems.

We are now assuming you play Epic as well and may be looking to use the combined fleet for a Campaign or something similiar.

Yes, I play Marines in Epic. I have some Imperial Guard awaiting painting too.

I don’t want to use the Marine list as it doesn’t really appeal, the idea of using nothing but Marines when the Imperial cruisers look much cooler. To be honest I was going to use a straight Imperial list but seeing as I bought the Strike Cruiser I thought it would be nice to throw it in with my other ships. And yes, I guess a campaign would be feasible but I never really have the opportunity to do one, unfortunately.

if that is the case maybe another strike cruiser would be fun, effective and fluffy. i might take less escorts inorder to add the strike cruisers.

then you need something with longer range batteries. something over 30cm to fend off nasty eldars. perhaps tyrants with upgraded weapon batteries if this allowed in the armageddon list.

what has been stated about the Mars is true. But unlike the dictator the mars has nicely ranged dorsal guns

The range of the weapons was a bit of a concern and I was looking at the upgraded Tyrant and wondering if it is ok to take it. Can't see why it's not although technically in the fluff they talk of it being in the Gothic sector. Don't see why another ship couldn't have the same upgrade though.

Assuming I can take it I can do one of a few things:

a) Lose two Lunars or a Lunar and the Gothic and replace with a Strike Cruiser and Tyrant. I could then add a Nova Cannon to either the Lunar or the Tyrant (prob Tyrant);

b) Lose a Firestorm and replace a Lunar or the Gothic with the apgraded Tyrant and a reroll.

c) Downgrade the Admiral, add a reroll and replace a Lunar or the Gothic with the Tyrant.

d) Make another use of the Armageddon list and replace a Lunar with an Armageddon battlecruiser, probably by cutting a Firestorm and swapping the Admiral for a reroll. I'm quite liking this option actually as the Armageddon has those nice 60cm guns.

Feel free to offer opinions on those but my primary question is which to lose - Gothic or Lunar in case of a) to c)?

i am fairly bias for upgraded Tyrants and separately don't ever use Lunars

i doubt anyone would trouble you for upgraded Tyrants in an Armageddon list.

Ok thanks.

I'm liking the Armageddon idea as I would imagine more 60cm guns help against the Eldar that I here bad things about. I could instead get the beefed up Tyrant and an extra escort but I'm not sure how useful that Escort would be against the Space Elves.

EDIT - hmm, looking again at the Gothic list, the Overlord seems rather better than the Armageddon for the points, unless I'm missing something!

I personal like A. Strike Cruisers working in concert should be fairly effective.

that was my thoughts as well

How about this?:

Fleet Admiral 50
Reroll 25
Mars battlecruiser 270
Lunar cruiser 180
Armageddon battlecruiser 245
Dictator cruiser 220
Strike cruiser 145
Strike cruiser 145
Marine cobras *3 105
Falchion *3 105

Total 1490

I personally think the Armageddon works better in concert with the Mars than the Overlord - the matched range of the broadside makes for better operational synergy. However, I don't think that there is much doubt that the Overlord is the better of the two classes. That which you loose in firepower is more than made up for in extra range.

Personally, I like a pair of Overlords as an escort for a Retribution class battleship (although, that said, I converted my Retribution into and Apocalypse and my Overlord into a Tyrant when I reorganised my fleet earlier this year...)

It just struck me as odd that you get a better range for less points with the Overlord. But I can't take one if the Marines are going to tag along so never mind.

22-09-2006, 15:41
Indeed, and if memory serves me right, you can't take Retribution class battleships either...

22-09-2006, 23:17
Imho, 2 upgraded Tyrants should be in _all_ imperial lists, and you dont need the nova cannon on one of them if you have the mars, otherwise 1 nova is nice..
then 2 lunar, and 2 of what ever battle cruiser you want, personally I kinda like the overlord and the armageddon one. And to top things off id add a emperor class battleship, or atleast a Oberon (wich Im very fond of to)

22-09-2006, 23:57
2 upgraded tyrants and 2 light cruisers

yeah how could I forget the dauntless.. =)
