View Full Version : "Damokles torment" - a long term, multi-army project log

27-09-2006, 08:37

As the mental whip of torment leashes against my back once again to remind me of all my unfinished projects, I decided to start a project log to motivate myself. Or better, to let you guys motivate me!

So what is there to do?

I decided to start with my IG, the Adorian Army Korps, which should have been used in the Medusa V campaign, but due to several reasons they stayed in the shelves (and boxes for that matter).
about 1800 pts of the army are built and painted, only their basing needs to be done, which means getting 90+ models of theirs first!
army shot: http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l292/Damokles_messenger/Adoria%20Army%20Korps/ImperialeArmee.jpg

The army will be completed by some infantry, which need to be built to bring it to 2000 pts, including:

1 senior officer with command hq (WIP), consisting of medic, vox-caster, standard, and a veteran which I'm using a redemptionist priest from necromunda for

a mortar team (WIP)
a flamer guy (WIP)
a veteran with stormbolter (I'm using a heavy stubber) (WIP)
a soldier with demo charge (WIP)
3 specialists with flashlights for the special weapon squad
1 serg. (WIP)
8 soldiers

after those are built, the whole army will get their bases done and the last guys will be painted.

After the IG is finished I will continue working on either Dark Angels (much much conversion and painting work to do on about 4000 pts), Space Wolves (a dread and some wolfscouts to convert and painting 1500 pts), Eldar (a lot lying around, no craftworld or colour decided, many old aspect warriors (probably the most complicated project) or a fantasy project (Night Goblins or High Elves).

27-09-2006, 10:31
ok, sorry for the double post, but I thought the pictures deserved a new post, so here are the minis I've done so far, all without bases but these will be done once I got into a shop to buy some proper glue

senior officer with greenstuff carapace armour:

command hq medic, standard and vox caster:

and a veteran with "count as" meltabombs and honorifica imperialis for the command hq:

veteran with "counting as stormbolter" heavy stubber for a platoon hq:

ok, what do you think, comments and criticism are welcome

27-09-2006, 13:49
I love the veteran model. It rocks hard!

27-09-2006, 14:02
I was inspired to do him after watching the movie "Aliens" ;)

also I've done the sergeant, the demo charge guy, another member of the special weapons squad and the mortar team and will get the pics on the net as soon as I've taken them, which won't happen today because the batteries of my cam are not charged, sorry!

but I hope there will be some more progress over the weekend as my courses at university start again next week which will give me a headache!

the red hooded guy reminds me of a klansman, and the book makes it seem like hes one of those bible thumping klansmen

27-09-2006, 14:58
the red hooded guy reminds me of a klansman, and the book makes it seem like hes one of those bible thumping klansmen

well I guess the resemblance was intentional done by GW, he is one of the old GW Redemptionists for Necromunda, who are 40k versions of "the klan"
I'm using a squad of those fellas as veterans in the army

although I must claim that I'm in no way sympathising with the klan, it's believes or ideals. I just like the models because they have that crazy indoctrinated 40k feeling about them

27-09-2006, 18:13
Great, I read the army name as the '12th Andorian Imperial Guard'. Which made me surprised they weren't all blue and antenna-y.

But these I like. Nice conversions on the command squad, too.

27-09-2006, 20:45
I like the flag bearing model! What's the flag made out of? Seems to me like some bitz of WHFantasy?!

Brush your teeth

I like the flag bearing model! What's the flag made out of? Seems to me like some bitz of WHFantasy?!

if im not mistaken its a knightly oreders standard

and damoles. its all looking promising so far, keep it up!

27-09-2006, 22:04
and a veteran with "count as" meltabombs and honorifica imperialis for the command hq:

Very nice, glad they aren't white robes or somebody might think you're fielding the Ku Klux Klan (or, if they're a idiot, ghosts)

28-09-2006, 06:34
thx for the heads up!

As you said the banner is from the Imperial Knightly Order sprue from WFB. A friend of mine converted some to Chaos Knights some time ago and I traded some other bitz for the banner. The arm is the grenade throwing one from the cadian sprue. A little bit of drilling and cleaning and the banner pole fits exactly in.

The conversion work is now almost finished, one member of the special weapons squad missing. Then the last 8 soldiers, which will not be converted, just regular flashlights. After that I'll start on the bases.

oh, and you read right, it's ADORIA, no "n" in there. The name means "undefeated" or something similar in latin.

pics will follow as I get the camera working

edit: @ riggable: please read my third post regarding the kkk resemblance

28-09-2006, 09:48
(small) update: although my camera is still waiting for fresh batteries I found some pics on my hard drive to show to you:

first a soldier with flamer for the platoon hq:

specialist with demo charge for special weapon squad:

group shot of the redemptionists, the guy with the chainsaw is a priest for the command hq:http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l292/Damokles_messenger/Adoria%20Army%20Korps/Redemptionists.jpg

and the converted chimera with machinegun, and updated lasguns,
also notice the two guys with meltaguns, these are for the special weapon squad aswell:http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l292/Damokles_messenger/Adoria%20Army%20Korps/Chimera.jpg

29-09-2006, 10:01
hm, not many comments here, well to cover for me doing nothing, especially not getting my camera to work, I give you a better pic of my demolisher with the alternative turrets for either of the three Russ-chasis:

what do you think?

also, I wondered, does any of you have a clue how I could get proper urban bases done on already painted minis, without removing them from their base and without having to paint them all over again?!

Still learning
29-09-2006, 10:18
i really like the colour scheme, and thank you for the detailed shots of the troops with FW upgrades,

one request could you post some more of those

good luck and keep at it

29-09-2006, 10:34
you mean more detailed shots of the minis/conversions or do you want to see the FW parts specifically? I can take one of the spare parts from FW, that I didn't use/haven't yet used. Although these were taken with a camera I boroughed and can't get hold of for 2 weeks from now and I don't know if the cam I got will capture the detail as well.

Also most of the FW parts were bended and/or had scratches or holes in them, or parts of the parts missing, as the piece on the medic were I had to replace parts with green stuff.

04-10-2006, 16:04
update: some pics this time! got some batteries and my camera to work, although most of the pics got somewhat blurry why I can't give you many detail shots of the FW upgrades as these were especially blurry (taken from too close it seems). So no more talking, here the pics:
specialists with crack-grenades:

sergeant (had to fill a huge hole on the arm and some minor flaws with greenstuff):

mortar team:

detail shot of FW bits (one of which I needed to repair with greenstuff):

I will probably do some more work on saturday, maybe sunday depending on how fast I get the stuff for my uni-courses done! theoretical physics is waiting! hoooray!

06-04-2007, 16:49
I see not much is being posted here. I think this army is brilliant and i would like to see more of it.

07-04-2007, 13:30
actually, there has been some progress, I finished buiding all the missing guys, they are already primed but still not attached to their bases (which are sanded and painted),
I also started painting the last regular infantry squad. I wont be spending much time on that one, partly because I don't want to invest my rare painting time into standard troopers who won't be looked at much anyway, so they will be rather messy

I also started painting my standard bearer and my commander, who both will get more attention painting-wise, last but not least did I manage to attach about 20 regular guys to their finished bases, so they are done for now

I'm goint to paint some to day but I can't finish any of the painting stuff over the weekend because I ran out of some of the colours, bugger!

pics will hopefully follow next week, depending on how fast I can get my fingers on a camera

03-08-2007, 15:36
well I'm back with updates! been a long time since I last worked on the project, but I focused on my studies in the past months and only recently, after a boost in enthusiasm through apocalypse I started work again.

and here it comes, pics
my senior officer with some staff

and lastly, wip guys

03-08-2007, 17:20
Very nice work. Im especially liking the freehand imperial eagle (or is it brass icons? anyways the writings freehand) on the banner and the green stuff carapace.

The best convertions are those that look like they could be purchased like that and youve definatly acomplished that.

03-08-2007, 17:47
thanks a lot, though the eagle isn't freehand, it's from FW, the painting and conversions are the best I could come up with, certainly not the high standard some other members paint or convert but I'm satisfied.

on a side note, next update will be next week as I will not be home this weekend. I will try to finish the infantry squad as well as the medic, vox-caster and the tank turrets until then.

I like the looks of those, especially the second WIP lietenant and the vox man you posted on this page!

Really liking the mix of Necromunda models in there. It helps to bring character to the army (did I spot a few Cawdor?). Looks like things are coming along well, good job. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this.

31-03-2008, 18:17
well, I was under the impression that there wasn't much interest, that and I got loads of other stuff to do the last (and coming for that matter) months, but I did finish painting some of the things mentioned and I will post pictures once I have taken them, expect them somewhere around the coming weekend

also I might have some teaser pictures of the material I'm gathering for my summer-project, which will be related to (more of an expansion actually) the 12th Adorian.

31-03-2008, 18:30
Ah... I really should look at the dates on things, shouldn't I . Oh well, glad it was resurrected (not by me!), those look great. Teaser pics please. Maybe this will be a successful 'revival thread'!

31-03-2008, 18:37
yeah well, maybe some thread necromancy was what I needed to get interested again myself! also the project is not dead, it's just on ice from time to time because I much to do for uni,

and yes, there are some cawdor in there together with the old necromunda redemptionists... but if you like them, wait for the teaser pics...

31-03-2008, 18:41
Great conversions, they add alot of character to what can be a somewhat bland Army (plastic cadians)

When you get the chance, check out my IG log in my sig.

Hi there, I'm back, well back with updates, been lurking around warseer constantly, I'm participating in the tale of 40k painters, where I posted this months work some minutes ago: http://warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2915532&posted=1#post2915532

I want to finish the army korps and hopefully continue to my next project: space wolves!

but for now I will post here some shots of what has been finished pre TO40KP:

HQ command squad and first infantry platoon:

and detail shot of the HQ

as well as the leman russ turrets:

and as promised a long time ago: teaser for the auxiliaries of the army korps aka. third infantry platoon

I will try to get weekly updates in here as possible from now on and once a month the update on the TO40KP.

06-09-2008, 21:42
Ok-Ay, although there hasn't been much feedback lately, I do have an update, kind of, I've been working on a heavy bolter team, took a wip shot of them before I started work today and have since gone over the metal details, especially of the weapons and equipment that are not shown in the pic,

there is much work still to do, highlight on the uniform, faces/eyes, black cover up work, and some details I've been sloppy about the last time, also the bases are primed, you can see them if you follow the link in my last post and scroll a little bit down, I did use a different method to make them then I used to, instead of cutting out individual cardboard tiles for the base, which resulted in them getting moved and thus full of pva while glueing, I carefully cut two parallel fine lines into a bigger piece of cardboard, the stripe in between could then be easily dislodged. I finally cut the exact base-sized pieces out of the big piece and voila!

Ok, now onto a workspace pic, you can see the heavy bolter guys lying around, paint drying at the moment

I use the table for real life stuff, like eating, learning etc. as well, which is why all the painting equipment needs to be removable in a minute or so, or else I get crazy! but while painting I do watch some dvds, theres nothing but a good war movie while painting imperials

Nice work I like the highlighting on the gray. That command squad is really nice and I can't wait to see the third platoon.

07-09-2008, 10:12
thx for the feedback, the redemptionist platoon won't however get painted this month, but I will start building them soon and will post wip pictures, I'm currently looking for heavy flamer parts or ways to convert them, because I will make them count as jungle-fighters, makes sense to me, less armour, more flamers, would anyone have a problem with that in a game?

I have a doctrine point to spare and I'm not going to use any of the other special rules, moving through terrain etc. because this is not very fluffy, torch carrying, red robed, screaming lunatics are not very stealthy I guess

Colonel Haizelhoff
07-09-2008, 10:52
maybe u wanna give them warrior weapons?

07-09-2008, 11:11
I thought about that, but I would have had to equip every model with warrior weapons, choosing the jungle fighters docrine allows me only to upgrade the third platoon, the redemptionists, while the other infantry platoons have close order drill, since I also chose special weapon squads, priests and iron discipline I spent all 5 doctrine points, and the army is nicely split in two groups, the disciplined, close ranked army soldiers and the rioting, flamer and chainsaw wielding maniacs

Colonel Haizelhoff
07-09-2008, 11:17
Oh yeah damn forgot that part.

07-09-2008, 11:26
we'll see, maybe one day I feel like adding another mob of preachers and a HQ and make them a standalone army with hellhounds and stuff... *dreams*

10-10-2008, 13:31
sorry everybody, no real update this time, was on a conference for a week and scheduled the week after that for painting, unfortunately my computer decided this was a good time to cross the river styx, so I was very distracted with the whole buisness of getting a new one, retrieving data, installing software, configuring everything, etc. in order to get work going for university, so I had to play a joker this time in the To40kP, and will continue my painting soon, hopefully next week, depending on the amount of work I have in real life,

on the plus side, I did continue painting the heavy bolter team and started sorting through the bitz for my redemptionists, deciding some weapon options, I figured I'm gonna drop the jungel-fighter idea, mainly because I havn't got enough flamers to convert the extra heavy flamers, lets see if I can get some during the next two months or so

11-10-2008, 04:34
I like the Medic's converted hypodermic thingy (technical term ;) ). The FW parts really go a long way to making Cadians stand out from similar armies. Shame about the miscast parts though.

A suggestion for repairing straps is try using GW transfer sheets cut into narrow strips with a sharp craft knife. They are a comparable thickness to resin and plastic model straps; everybody has loads spare; easy to work with; and glues in place almost immediately with super glue.

29-03-2009, 12:36
I love your army
really great project
