View Full Version : Keravin's too many damn armies thread

09-10-2006, 00:06
This is my project thread to try and encourage me to actually finish armies rather than to wander off and paint something else.

To put this in context I've been collecting since the early 80s and I never really started painting until a few years back. Before then I had a few tries at painting, but the results were dire.

Currently I'm working on:

1) Sorting out a colour scheme for Eldar after Ulthwe look to have lost the stuff I enjoyed in the last edition.
2) Sorting out a colour scheme for Tau. Tried one, going to try another.
3) Trying to paint my converted Cadian Drop Troop army and then realising my army list isn't that clever.
4) More on a Blood Ravens army
5) More on a Mechanised Marine army - unnamed so far.
6) Finishing a few figures for my Khador army for Warmachine - probably the most completely painted army I have.

Without posting more I'll start showing pictures. Apologies we're still learning how to light figures and do decent shots.

These are to give an idea of the Drop Troops. I've changed the colour scheme once on these.

09-10-2006, 00:12
First the figures painted so far in the current scheme.

As you can see I've finished a FW Vulture and Drop Sentinel to go with the force. The Drop Sentinel is magnetised to allow for multi purpose.

A really bad shot comparing the old colour scheme with the new one.

Similarly bad shot

Shot of the army with all the stuff stuck together and painted in it - both schemes

And the stuff to make still

09-10-2006, 00:26
Finally for this batch my Khador army.

09-10-2006, 01:07
uh...what army is that?
I mean...huh?

09-10-2006, 01:15
UnRiggable: Khador... It's for Warmachine.
A game produced by Privateer Press.

Keravin: That Vulture looks good.
The grey is close to what I want my Krieg vehicles to look like, what colour is it?

Good luck with your projects!

09-10-2006, 02:53
I love these threads! Lets see some more!
It looks like you have good painting skills. But do you do many conversions? I didnt see any(i might have missed them...)

09-10-2006, 09:53
Scorpio: Yeah they are quite a few subtle and not so subtle conversions on the Drop Troops. Lots of additional equipment, arm moves etc. I'll try and get better pictures and the conversions tend to be a lot more obvious with my marines or 13th Company just because I'm more used to the figures to be able to convert them.

With the Drop Troops I've used Elysian weapon packs so they are festooned with gear to represent them being dropped in behind enemy lines.

UnRiggable: yeah as said up top that's for Warmachine. Definitely need better pics of them as you can't see any markings or highlighting.

Machinepriest: Base coat of a dark grey over black primer, then working up with mainly codex and a little highlight of fortress. Really simple. I'll get a shot of the pilots and the markings on the other side. Haven't put any tail markings on until I'd sorted the rest of the army's markings.

You need natural light(sun) behind the camera. Not behind the object.

Because you are facing into the light you are capturing the shadowed side of the object.

Looks like a cool army but its too dark!

Better pics will be taken. Thanks for the tips - we will get the photos better.

Just found out that part of my christmas present will show up next week which is two tables to allow me to do a 4x4 gaming table. Eventually I'll get a third to allow a potential 6x4 but we just wanted to get stuff sorted so we can have small games and Warmachine games at home. Picking up the hardboard for the table top this weekend. So shortly I will also be starting on building my city using the new cities of death, a lot of necromunda sprues and more. More on that to come when I start planning it.

Once the camera is back in the country I will get photos of the Eldar up. Doing a colour scheme with a predominantly brown suit with bleached bone on some armour and guns and turquoise as another colour to bring it all up. The whole armour will be painted in this basic scheme with some variants for the Aspects - bit more bone on the Banshees, Dark Green carapace on the Scorpions.

Currently painting or finishing 5 Guardians, 1 Wraithguard, 1 Banshee, 1 Banshee Exarch, 1 Scorpion, 1 Farseer, 1 Warlock and 1 jetbike to get the scheme working across most of the strands of the army. Pics to come.

27-10-2006, 09:10
Got more pics coming this weekend.

I've sorted a colour scheme for my Tau - variant on one of the normal ones. Been working on a Devilfish, a Firewarrior squad, a battlesuit and a normal Broadside (before I start on my Forge World ones).

I've also got my table set up now so I can start working on doing the boards for that - two different types - normal grass and urban.

05-11-2006, 21:40
Pics will be coming shortly.

I'm trying to finish painting 500 points of Tau so I can do small games getting a feel for them.

Finishing off the Devilfish to the point before I do the base and transfers.
The Broadside is done with the battlesuit waiting on my deciding to do fixed armament.

I've got a Warmachine tournament coming up so I've been working on finishing 1000 points of Khador for that. Nothing worse that turning up for a tourney with unpainted figures.

My new Eldar showed up as well so once I've done 500 points of Tau I can figure out a small force to paint and complete for them.

11-11-2006, 10:51
Ok the update finally.

Still trying to figure photography so some blurry pics.

The Huh picture for those who don't do Khador. An in progress picture of my Epic Warcaster for Warmachine. This is for a tournament next weekend and I've got a huge warjack that is being built, green stuffed and pinned to high heaven at the moment.

Onto the Tau. I thought I'd taken more pictures of these as I've got half a Firewarriors Squad, a Broadside and a couple of drones finished with a Pathfinder squad with Devilfish and a normal battlesuit enroute.

The initial scheme for these was the Tau scheme in Cities of Death, but I couldn't get it to look sharp enough for me.

More at the photobucket, but less focused.

11-11-2006, 10:54
Next up the Eldar colour scheme in progress. For these I want a scheme I can use on everyone and then fit in some of the aspect colours to highlight them.

The basic Guardian scheme

http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Eldar/DSCN5099.jpg http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Eldar/DSCN5098.jpg

One of the Warlocks. I'm going with them in this scheme with the farseers having black robes over the top.

11-11-2006, 10:56
Then one of the tests for the Banshees.

http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Eldar/DSCN5096.jpg http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Eldar/DSCN5091.jpg

And the Wraithguard for which I'll have to do something nice for the Spiritseer or use the Boneseer instead

19-11-2006, 18:40
Did a tournament for Warmachine today and that's meant I've mostly been painting for that lately.

Now that's done I'm going to finish 500 points of Tau (well more like 750) and then 500 points of new Eldar.

The Tau up in the pictures has been tidied up and the Sept marking is now one that moves from bright orange to yellow to give a little bit more colour to the figures. For the Tau I now have finished (except bases and varnishing):

One Broadside
One Battlesuit
4 Pathfinders and Devilfish
2 Fire Warriors Pulse Carbine
8 Fire Warriors Pulse Rifle

To finish off this batch then I am going to do up

8 Fire Warriors Pulse Carbine
6 Vespid
and then a stack of Pulse Rifle Fire Warriors as they are fairly quick to do as a batch.

Photos to come shortly for all those.

I've got a stack of the new Eldar to go along with the stuff I've been buying of the older stuff over the year. Still got my Wraithlord on his way in the post. Given I'm doing scout forces first to play with I should be doing some War Walkers soon.

19-11-2006, 19:35
Looks good. And your right you do have too many armies;)

19-11-2006, 19:48
This is nothing. The full list is about 12 40k armies. This is just what I'm working on at the moment. Thanks for the comments.

19-11-2006, 19:55
Well, I've got three 40k armies in work at the moment, and 12 is just about average. (flickers through GW-bribed money)

19-11-2006, 20:13
It's all the fault of plastic. I love kit building :)

I'll try and get some of the more converted armies posted like the various Marines. Gonna convert Eldar. The Tau just don't lend themselves yet to converting too much.

01-12-2006, 12:33
This weekend I'm going to be trying out some of the new Privateer Press paints on some PP figures and some Eldar. I'll also be on a mad painting 20 or so Firewarriors kick.

My other plan is to take photos of the finished Tau so far and some of my older armies that are painted, but which will get spruced up when I finish current projects.

01-12-2006, 21:00
Pics Pics Pics man! We need them!

05-12-2006, 18:30
Ok a stack of pictures. Looking at them and some (especially the Tau) don't show a great amount of detail such as highlighting.

I'll do the Tau first - the full pics for them can be found at http://s96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Tau/

Is the completed figures so far.

More Firewarriors and finishing the Vespid who are work in progress so far. Then at some point bases will be sorted.

05-12-2006, 18:33
Ok onto my oldest painted army which used to be called the Gates of Hell back in first edition and are now called the Gatekeepers.

http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Warhammer/DSCN5139.jpg The Tactical and Devastator Squads so far. I used to have multiple companies, but just down to one full strength one and a 1st and 10the Company.

http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Warhammer/DSCN5140.jpg My first ever painted 'vehicle'.

http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Warhammer/DSCN5133.jpg The Terminator Captain and Librarian.

05-12-2006, 18:38
You should bear in mind this army is from when I was starting painting so if I ever get chance will get tidied up considerably.

Next up a collection of character models and veterans

http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Warhammer/DSCN5136.jpg A converted Chaplain. I wanted the veterans to be robed which is why various of them were being changed to other armies.

http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l167/keravin/Warhammer/DSCN5134.jpg A couple more basic conversions.

05-12-2006, 18:40
The last batch for this army (and god the white looks bad in photos).

05-12-2006, 18:50
My current marine armies are a Blood Ravens force (designed to be no vehicles except Bikes and Speeders) and a Mech Unnamed Marine Force (with loads of vehicles and Techmarines/bionics).

The Blood Ravens first

Freehand design on the Terminator Captain armour. Got a load more Terminators and Scouts to build for the Blood Ravens so conversions a plenty in the new Year.

My first Dreadnought for this army. With magnetised arms for swapping weapons. I have a Forgeworld Dreadnought to do next.

The finished Terminators so far. I need to swap them onto consistent bases when I do the proper bases.

My Converted Librarian. Needs a bit of guitar wire to finish him off and a familiar.

05-12-2006, 18:53
The Mech marines

This will probably be the Sergeant of my Veterans. I just wanted a Siege Marine.

My converted Librarian.

Captain of the Terminators.

And their first finished vehicle - minus a few decals.

05-12-2006, 18:57
No more done on the Eldar yet - which will probably be a Xmas project.

I have been using the new Privateer Press paints (which are fantastic) and when I have finished pics I'll show them and hopefully you can see the results. New camera being bought next year.

The last pic this time is of a Behemoth my wife and I finished for my Khador army.

05-12-2006, 20:00
Yes lots of pics! They all look great and in most cases are better then my current painting skill! Cool stuff.

05-12-2006, 20:05
Thanks. I wish highlights were showing up better, but I'll try and post more pics including pics of the 13th Company army (which again I want to spruce up now I'm more experienced at painting).

19-12-2006, 08:17
Should hopefully have more pics, but for those looking for GW stuff you'll be disappointed. My latest projects have been to finish some Privateer Press Mercs and Trollbloods. Oh and some Vespid.

The thing that may be of interest is that I've been doing the last batch with the new P3 paints which are fantastic.

Next up is either Eldar or some more Blood Ravens. Few more trolls on the way.

19-12-2006, 09:00
Love it! lots of pictures, tons of armies, and a warmachine log, which is rare. I'll be following this, but you DO need to get a better camera, or get some skills with your current one. Maybe we can help, if you're new at the photography thing?

Are you using macro mode in the camera? What type of camera is it? For comparison, here's a really close up shot I took of a marine for my log. You should be able to get something similar with practice:

19-12-2006, 09:08
It's my wife's camera so I'll flag this stuff to her. I'm a technical idiot on that side of things :)

Thanks for the help though.

20-01-2007, 14:47
A large update as it takes me ages to get the camera sorted even when doing loads of painting. No macro on the camera so that means the wife wants me to buy her a new one later in the year :)

Some more of the Tech Marines I'm doing. Still need to decide on a name and chapter symbol.

They are getting the older Terminators so I can use the new ones on my Blood Ravens.

Had to play about with magnets after the sponsons broke off. Will probably do some plasticard on the sponsons to hide the magnets better.

These are both work in progress as I work on the white to get it to look better.

20-01-2007, 14:56
awesome stuff man, its good to know im not the only one in the many armies boat(i think im up to 8 that need completing), i cant think of much to critise except the blurry ness but then again i only just discovered macro myself...

20-01-2007, 15:02
Finishing off some Blood Raven scouts I started ages ago before opening a new box and starting to convert them.

More work in progress with the Eldar now I've gotten the new codex and realised I needed to get weapons platforms.

Finished so far on the jetbikes. Need to figure craftworld markings to put on the fronts. They also got me away from a single colour scheme for everything as the brown looked too much on them.

20-01-2007, 15:10
The figures keeping me most occupied are my Warmachine and Hordes which I'm just finding a lot easier to paint at the moment.

I'm applying to become a Press Ganger for the game and so they need shots of two battleboxes completed.

And Khador

Also been working on Cavalry for Khador which need pinning.
Wish the pictures showed the highlighting and skin tones better - these are the first horses I've ever painted.

The Riders

20-01-2007, 15:17
With my Birthday money I've been buying up figures to get a decent addition to my Trollblood army for hordes and finishing off those figures I had already started. This is the ONLY army where everything is painted or in progress.

My Dire Troll in progress. I need to build his base now to put him on and then varnish.

20-01-2007, 15:26
My Mercenary army which was what I seemed to focus most on over christmas apart from the Trolls.

Magnus the Traitor and his battlegroup. These have all been painted using Privateer Press' new P3 paint range which I absolutely love. Great coverage and can't wait to see the inks.

Solo shot of Magnus

Gorten and his battlegroup. Doesn't look like the pic I wanted of Gorten on his own got taken.

20-01-2007, 15:29
The Solos for the armies.

Monster Hunter extraordinaire. Again painted with P3.

And my Ogrun Bokur bodyguard.

20-01-2007, 15:42
The main reason I thought to take the figures (bringing it back to GW) is that all the DKOK logs have inspired me to pull out my Steel Legion and do work on them.

Here's what I have so far:

This is a dual Mechanised Guard army and Armoured Company.

At the back on the left you have the HQ with 2 lascannons and a Missile launcher for the anti tank, the HQ and then the special weapons squad with 3 grenade launchers.

Now it is the first army I started painting when I restarted a few years ago and looking at the painting they need work to a) get rid of the world's worst green helmets, b) highlight them, c) work on what skin there is and d) do all those tanks.

What I'm using to get myself motivated is that I will be allowed to buy some DKOK to act as Stormtroopers and another platoon/HQ in the army. Plus I'm going to buy some stuff to spruce the tanks up.

My wife has asked me to finish with a pic she entitles "I used to have a coffee table".

21-01-2007, 15:14
The camera I'm using is a Nikon Coolpix 2500.

I've discovered a close up button to use so better shots will be coming.

However if anyone knows a good camera to use please let me know as my Nikon is pretty much a take pictures of drunk people camera and not a taking pictures of little men camera.

25-05-2010, 21:12
from what i can see the freehand on the termiator sergeant shield on powersword looks good, i think you having the same problem i had with the light, what you need is a light box and then alter white settings in your camera (my camera will automatically detect the white balance).
