If i get the christmas bonus i am expecting, a big chunk of it will go toward building my own epic forces. Yes, i said forceS. I have played a few games with other people models before moving 2 years ago. Ever since, i have poured over the rules ( i bought the EA book, Swordwind, as well has have all the specialist magazines) and have decided to build 2 armies to complement my 2 BFG fleets (Chaos and Imperial). Having both armies as IG will allow me to keep the same set of rules but two different style of play. Having two armies will allow me to introduce others to the game as well.

For army composition, i want a combined arms approach so air support is a must. I want some formations to hold my boardside and some to attack with. I have forsaken titans because i want a look resembling 20th/21st century modern armies. My thoughts on the two armies are as follow.

Chaos IG will use the Siegemaster army list. This is because i really like the look of their heavy tanks, and as they are used as walkers, they could represent stalk tanks of a blood pact army! My tentative list:

Companies:
250 Regimental HQ +fortifications
300 Infantry +fortifications +rapiers
300 Infantry +fortifications +rapiers
250 Infantry +reinforced +snipers
250 Infantry +reinforced +snipers
Support Formations:
450 Siege Artillery Company
300 Heavy Tank Company
300 Heavy Tank Company
Air Support:
150 Thunderbolt fighters
150 Thunderbolt fighters
300 Marauder Bombers
total = 3000pts
Reinforcement:
450 Siege Artillery Company
300 Heavy Tank Company
250 Sappers
Total = 4000pts

For the Imperial IG, i want a mobile mechanized force because i love the chimeras and the valkyries. I also don't like the look of the Russes and want to keep it different from the Blood Pact army so this is what i am thinking.

Companies:
700 Regimental HQ +tank sqd
600 Mechanized Infantry +tank sqd
600 Mechanized Infantry +tank sqd
400 Mechanized Infantry
400 Mechanized Infantry
Air Support:
150 Thunderbolt fighters
150 Thunderbolt fighters
total = 3000pts
Reinforcement:
350 Storm troopers +Valkyries
350 Storm troopers +Valkyries
300 Vulture Squadron
Total = 4000pts

now before i spend a load of money, i would like some comments? :)

Superheavies... while not being as complex as Titans from a rules still introduces the rules and how to use them. In your case Shadowswords would be important if you want to have an army that can compete, while Baneblades will be useful to introduce that they are tough when you are introducing players.

I can't say anything about Siegemasters list as noone here plays it.

But the IG list is interesting. I would probably drop one of the Mech Inf with tanks and get artillery instead. But I just like the artillery so I'm obviously biased :D. It might have problems with tougher WEs.

i am 50 pts short of replacing the 3 tank platoons with a tank company.

what about 2 vulture squadrons instead, would that be better than 3 tank platoons?
more flavorful at least

The second list seems to have gone rather OTT on the infantry front. 5 mechanised plus 2 storm troopers leaves you too little to deal with armoured threats. Iíd cull at least one mechanised formation.

Roll those tank squadrons up into a company. You wonít get the best out of them attached to infantry. If you want to beef up the mechanised formations use something thatís fun in assaults like Hellhounds.

And yes, a Shadowsword would be good.

Well, thatís 400 points worth of changes to replace the mechanised company. Iíd still cut the infantry further (you do have a lot but I donít want to get too radical with your list.

Once again, I largely agree with Bombot. Also, you might find that Thunderbolts alone are not sufficient AA coverage. A few Hydras scattered around can make a big difference.

As for the Siege IG, keep in mind that the rule review will likely boost them 25-50 points per infantry company. TRC's proposed tweaks are available on Tactical Command and (I think) on the SG boards.

i will remove the 3 tank platoons and replace them with something else

how crucial are hydras and how many?

I would say that you want at least 1 hydra for two formations. The 45 cm range is equal to or greater than all but the Thunderhawks Battlecannon in range. So few air strikes against a unit or pair of formations with a Hydra in one of them will not be shot at. Multiple formations of Thunderbolts on CAP can become deal with a few formations of attacking air assets, but do not provide definite defense for each unit. Hydras get to attack each air formation once, but each formation. It becomes a question of how you want to deal with enemy air - use your own air or have AA units embedded in units.

i was thinking of using the 2 thunderbolts squadrons for air defense but the suggestions seems to be that i need hydras as well!

OK, here is my revised list

Companies:
500 Regimental HQ
450 Mechanized Infantry +Hydra
450 Mechanized Infantry +Hydra
350 Storm troopers +Valkyries
350 Storm troopers +Valkyries
300 Vulture Squadron
300 Vulture Squadron
2700pts

Air Support:
150 Thunderbolt fighters
150 Thunderbolt fighters
3000pts

In the 2700 point list, I personally would swap one of the Stormtroopers w/ Valkyries and Vulture Squadron for a Tank Company.

When the list goes up to 3.5k or 4k adding the two of them on makes sense.

I don't know about that. Paired Stormtrooper squads can be used very effectively. They can be aggressive yet avoid overextending due to their ability to support each other.

Dual Vulture formations serve the function of providing massed AT fire. Once a titan/gargant's shields are stripped, all those AT shots can do a lot of damage. It's not as good as deathstrikes but it's far more versatile.

I think it's a pretty good list.

i am probably going to keep the 3k list as is then.
what do you all recommend then for the next 1k to 4000 pts? titals? tank company?
