My only reservation at this point is the use of gothic ruins on the base. Stone buildings have a tendancy to crumble/collapse, rather than leaning at drunken angles.

That Titan is just pure paintey goodness! Do the metal bands on the edge of the plates come bashed and bent like that, or did you do something to them to do that to them? Also does the Chaos Titan come with the "sores" on the plate, or again did you make them yourself, because if you did that makes this soo much more impressive because they look so real!!

Hey there Sheep.

First off, you ain't all that and a bag of potato chips.

But on a more serious not I'm enjoying the look that you have gone with. After seeing the damb thing for so many years I had given up on seeing it finished. But the paint scheme is coming together nicely.
Look forward to seeing it in the flesh (pun intended).

Spray the tank black, base coat it with german grey, get a GW blister pack sponge and dab vegimite on the tank where you want the chips, spray over the top with white, wait an hour, wash the tank in warm soapy water with a tooth brush, and then weather.

A couple of my mates cars were written off due to the amount of hail damage they sustained.

Lovely! SO what is this white wash stuff and where can you get it? (and did I mis you explaining this already?) :)

White wash, in military modelling terms, is really thinned down white paint used to camoflage vehicles in WW2, anything with white pigment was thinned with gasoline/diesel and applied all over the tank, it had a very distictive wear pattern. Whitewash (http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitewash)

I'm simulating the effect using two layers of primer, The secret is Vegimite, a sandwich spread sold in Australia. Vegimite (http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegimite)

Spray the tank black, base coat it with german grey, get a GW blister pack sponge and dab vegimite on the tank where you want the chips, spray over the top with white, wait an hour, wash the tank in warm soapy water with a tooth brush, and then weather.

Hope that helps Migs

- the weathering on that chimera is fantastic.

Are you planning to paint them in your winter scheme? Because if you do, I might simply have to hunt you down and steal them. All of them! I mean, your weathering on your command chimera is just amazing. And the conversion you've done to build that hydra is superb. I mean, Im running out of adjectives to describe your tanks. :D

Loving it! Both the "white washed" vehicles and the autumn camo IG and vehicles simply look amazing.

Will you be making the the autumn and winter contigent compatible - if so: how? I guess it would be no supprise for an army to have a winter camo tanks aswell as tanks in autumn camo - yet to be white washed. One idea might be to add some frost or even snow to some of your autumn camo guys and tanks.

In my experience it is always a good idea to make sure you can use it all in battle at the same time. Otherwise you risk end up with a number of small individually themed warbands that doesn't look right together. Or maybe you have the drive to complete two individually themed IG armies at once?! if so I'm really impressed. What are your thoughts on this?

All in all, and in every meaning of the word though: awesome!

Oh, and the Titan is just lovely.

Ok, cool, so it's just the realistic effect you are going after not a magic ingridient. (BTW Many people do the same weathering effect with salt.)

Thanks for the info! I think I shall try something similar when I eventually get around doing some tanks for my marines.

Added melted snow and mud to the tracks fitted the whip aerial, and base coated the stowage.

Undecided as to whether to leave the hvy bolter like it is (black with edges picked out in Mithril silver - realism) or paint it GW style with grey highlights. Inout appreciatted.

@Wulf, the autumn guys will become purely drop troops again, and the vehicles will be repainted in this white wash scheme.

I just repainted the destroyer last nite, so yes the tanks are getting repainted in the new scheme :( it hurt to do but i just can't have tanks from 2 differnt armies together, drives me mental.

I may revisit the autmn schem sometime in the future.

Yes its supposed to be twinlinked, but i modeled it after the Tunguska (http://http://www.army-guide.com/eng/product1806.html?PHPSESSID=49961) Russian Close air defense tank, the justification is that it fires small rockets/missiles as well as the gun, hence twinlinked :D

Thanks guys.

The secret to the weathering is similar to the salt wash method. I used Vegimite though, a sandwich spread from Australia (marmite is similar).

Paint your base colour (vallejo German Grey) over you primer, then apply the vegimate by dabbing it onto the surfaces of the tank using a blister pack sponge, then spray white over the top. Paint your markings and numbers etc, then wash the tank in warm soapy water using a toothbrush to srub the vegimite off, it wioll remove the white spray above it leaving you with chips.

Weather to taste :D

Looking good, some details would make it even better. How about a big aquila, spaced out over all three plates?

old guard
29-11-2007, 10:31
Dont know about extra armour but that certainly goes a long way to 'blending' the plastic and FW blades together, all that needs is that funky little side hatch (from the FW version), and a standard las sponson for the two to not look out of place next to each other.

can I be a cheeky pommie b*****d and ask for the dimensions?

Good work chap

Thanks guys :D

Details are still going on, aquilla etc to be decided on final placement, still WIP i just wanted to show everybody :D

Sure thing O.G >

The back plate is 14.6cm long by 4.5cm deep. Angled to taste.

The smaller internal plates are just 3mm shorter from all edges if that makes any sense :) and a 2mm gap between each plate, done by eye because i'm a lazy bugger ;)

Hope that helps mate.

Hey Sheep,
I keep meaning to post to say how great this project log is, but you keep putting up new and cool stuff!
Highlights for me so far have included vegemite weathering and the amazing Hydra scratchbuild. Any chance of a bitz breakdown on that?

'Blade's looking great. Have you added greenstuff vision slits to the wee arches?

I assume the commander's going to be making an appearance on foot; or have you got a cunning plan for the awesome crew bits?

Why thankyou kind sir :D

Bitz break down on the hydra . . . ummmm. . .

1x chimera chassis
1x 2nd ed Leman russ copula (still included in the kit)
1x searchlight
1x SM search light
1x IG tank track guard
2x IG smoke launchers
1x whirlwind radar
1x IG tank copula
1x IG improved comms
2x boxes off IG tank accessorie sprue
7x IG missiles from heavy weps box
2x SM predator Autocannons
Lots of plasticard and patience :p:D

At the moment there are no plans for the command pieces, as the army accompanying these tanks will be DKoK, they would look abit out of place.

But i may do one up as a display piece. Any ideas as to setting/scene to put him in?

finally! another baneblade (ehm... hellhammer) without sponsons! iam not alone!

I really love the white wash on the tanks. The damage and dirt looks very realistic almost as if it the tank was cut out directly from an old WWII picture. A whole tank company like that would look simply amazing. They'd make my tanks look like factory fresh toys!

The deathkorpsman is good too. Are you planning on adding more colors to the gun...wood stock and all that? The base is top notch. Gloss varnish I take it?

Yeah, a flock of seagulls, British 80's band with some very strange haircuts, If I remember correctly they were all hairdressers, 'And I ran, I ran so far away' were lyrics from one of their singles rather wittily and indeed appropriately entitled 'I ran'. popular in the states and quoted extensively in any american film set in the 80's when the septics had no worthwhile music industry of their own:evilgrin: (I'm so going to get flamed for that.....reaches for his asbestos underpants...)

Thankyou sir, means alot coming from an esteamed IG collector and painter such as your good self. Thats the look i was going for, so it great to hear someone say it.

The Trooper was only about 85% done in that pic, I have added wooden stock and foregrip to the rifle, highlighted the webbing, and cleaned up the metals.

The mud is a mix of scorched brown, a dab of chestnut ink and gloss varnish, its actually darker IRL, and also covered in melting snow now.

Excellent work as usual Sheep. My only criticism would be the rocket launcher, it looks a bit dull, perhaps you might want to paint some parts of it with chipped paint?

I agree, i'm thinking of doing the face shield in the chipped white paint effect.

Good one on the Panzerknacker, it looks shortened; what all did you do to it?

Yeah it is shorter then the stock model.

To shorten it all i did was leave off the front part with the shield on it, cut the missile launcher smooth on the front, drilled the hole in it so it looked hollow, seperated the muzzle from the face shield, fitted the sield to the side of the tube, and glued it on.

Love it all. :D
Sorry if someone has already asked, but how'd you do the chipped armour?

The armour on the infantry is just painted a flat white, then the chips are painted on with Vallijo german grey, then the edges of the chips are picked out with chainmail, then the helmet is dirtied up with brown washes.

Is it me or is that missile launcher shorter? not the missile, that obviously is, the tube it self.

As above old bean

Hi guys, well firstly some good news, as most of you know in june of last year i was involved in a car accident that tragically claimed the life of my girlfriend of 3 1/2 yrs Ellie.

Today i had my final court apperance, I was charged with negligent driving occasioning death.

I was found not guilty of all charges, and the case was dismissed.

I would just like to say thankyou to all of you who provided support, be it through comments or PM's, during this time, it really helped.

Thankyou.

I really wanted to do something different with the head, but the HT head looked too small, so i just stuck with sticking the HT spike on there.

Hello all, finally added something to the Krieg, a Hellhammer.

These super heavies are all going to be completed by the 27th for a big apoc game at the local store (30,000 pts). I'm going to try and get tsome of the AC finished too, but we'll see.

I changed the tank ID numbers, the others just didn't do it for me any more, and in keeping with the germanic theme its a three digit number. Company, platoon, tank.

So this is the 3rd companies, 1st tank, HQ platoon.

So do you just apply the black as needed, then metallic the corners and edges of it? It's a good effect, and I don't see any of the ultra-fine highlighting usually required.

Its a Black undercoat, i then paint on the german grey, then i apply vegimite to the tank using a sponge, the spray it white. Then wash it with warm soapy water, this gives it a chipped effect. Then weather the tank, and paint the edges with chainmail.

Finally a use for vegimite!:D

You have a really great tank. I have used a similar technique with wet salt, but I did not like the results. I think with salt you have to use an artist air brush after it dries, but I used regular spray paint. Vegimite is hard to find here, I wonder if peanut butter would work? It might be harder to wash off.

Tommy, check some of the specialty and import food shops. Worst comes to worst, there's several stores in Portland (Oregon) that carry it- while some are grocers (and not likely to ship) there's an Aussie import shop in downtown you can probably google-up that WILL send stuff around the US. (My now wife, then girlfriend, drug me into it a few times for 'tastes of home'.)

Although last I heard, the US had blocked importation of the crap, not sure why, probably the extreme levels of vitamins & minerals in it, and improper labelling. But I digress and hijack Sheep's excellent thread and work.

Really quite happy with how this is coming along, tried using oil paints and thinners for the first time, and i must say they are easier to work with then traditional GW washes. One good thing is that the white went brown after the 2nd wash, so i put some thinners on a cotton bud and wiped it, the pil paint came off the flat panels and stayed in the recesses = awesome

Hi Sheep..

I love the look of your tanks, great painting and weathering.. I love the 'Berlin' Style camo..

Just one point with the vanquisher.. I think you may need to rust and soot up the exhaust pipes as at the moment (well in the pic of the rear) they look bright and shiny.. It may be that you intend these to be new replacements.. Its just that at the moment the newness tends to jar with the fantastic weathering you have on the rest of the tank..

Just a thought...

Continue the inspirational work..

Hello all, well long time no post with regards to this Plog, but I managed to extricate the proverbial digit from the proverbial rear and got some tanks finished.

Without further preamble let me present the Commissar of my regiment, yet to be named, in his faithful exterminator, the fluff is he came from another regiment, and after executing the previous commander for cowardice, repainted the tank black for shock value.

Finally! I was afraid this log had died...

Lovely tanks, sheep! The Commissar tank is really great! I love the extra details and baggage you've added.
At first I wasn't sold on the Berlin camo scheme, but now it's done I must say I was wrong. It looks stunning!

Keep up your awesome work! And please don't make us wait this long next time...

Sheep, they do indeed look ace. But for future, isn't odd that the mud reaches a line and just, stops? No splatters or streaks any higher, just solid mud then naught?

I very nearly sense a conspiracy!

Thanks for all the great comments guys.

The mud/snow bases are as follows:
1. instead of sand apply a mix of sand PVA and plaster of paris to the top of the base.
2. paint above scorched brown
3. paint the above with a mix of gloss varnish, scorched brown and chestnut ink.
4. profit :D

Good point about the mud.

From earlier in the thread, about page 26/7 i think.

The secret is Vegimite, or marmite if you're a sicko ;)

Spray the tank black, base coat it with german grey, get a GW blister pack sponge and dab vegimite on the tank where you want the chips, spray over the top with white, wait an hour, wash the tank in warm soapy water with a tooth brush, and then weather.

Simple.

Thanks for the comments guys, i think i left this one idle for a bit too long though :(

@ComLance: there should be a tut somwhere earlier in the thread, sorry can't be more specific then that, but i don't actually remember :(

Well not too much has happened on the painting front for these tanks unfortuantly, i got out the airbrush and base coated all the remaining leman russes so i could participate in a tournament running a AC list from the GW website, didn't go to badly (12th overall out of 40) 3 wins and 2 losses, but the losses were BIG, AC is definatley an eggs and basket army, and daemons are the bane of my existence :(

I'm finishing off my Warhound titan atm for a "state of origin" battle with a games club from brisbane queensland, which should be a blast, once thats done i'll crack on with the berliners.

Which bases in particular? I agree i have to do something about the mud on the tank, but i've never seen snow, so any tips on what it could do to improve it?

I can't help with the modeling aspect, but I live pretty far north so I'm pretty familiar with snow. I was thinking what you had there was ice & frozen mud, but he's right it needs something more, it's too smooth. There should be particles of both dirt and sharper edges to the snow/ice. Snow, by itself, is powdery like fine white sand (something you might be more familiar with) when it's cold. Snow is more clingy than sand since it usually melts a bit when it gets on a warm body and should probably be depicted as sticking a bit to the models legs and bottoms of their trenchcoats. Well, I'm not sure if that'll help your modeling, but hopefully it might help your visioning.

Its the fact that the mud needs to have more colour variation, and that in half the pictures I've seen it looks fairly glossy. Most of the time mud's pretty damned drab and matte, only when its certain soil types, water concentrations, and sitting in the right conditions, do you get a glossy effect.

Cheers for that, i'm not happy with the mud on them either, i'm thinking of rebasing them all. My motivation for krieg has died in the **** though, so i have to do something soon to justify the $700 outlay.

The method i used was basically a pin wash, painting the brown colour over the detail, and only the detail.

Wow! Very impressive weathering.
Very disappointed that I haven't checked this thread before (probably because the title doesn't elude to the army contents). And I see it's 2 years old! !!!1!one!

Ok... since it will take me some time to go through all... 1,2,3... 38 pages and counting... would you care to share your weathering technique (again?)?

Is it salt and lots of coats of paint? Industrial Masking agents?
