They look great mate, very epic which is what 40k is all about.
The statuary looks very atmospheric. I particularly like the toppled one. Well done.

3 marine "saints" that were the last of a heroic stand or successful conquering, on the planet you are playing on?
those statues are an amazing idea!
would you mind sharing the color recipe for the metal parts?
expecially for those blueish tones
Concur with the rest, those statues look excellent.
did you have to break that one to make the toppled statue? :(

Terrific stuff as usual mate, your valkyries have caused me to order two along with some cadians to make a proper renegade air cav army. The statues are bloody awesome and gigantic, would like to play with those on the table. And.....

Awesome statues, sheep. The last is my favourite.
Thanks guys.
The statues look great, the bases on the other hand could have used some more attention. Using a spackle solution to cover the foam exterior, I assume thia was a speed issue?
It was and wasn't, the foam got a coat of PVA, and a coat of texture paint, then 2 coats of rough coat which is what did the damage, no idea how it was affected :(
that terrain looks awesome, sheep.
nice oxidation (is it the right word? i dunno..but hope you know what i mean ;-) ) on the statues, and the scattered one is especially great :-)
keep it up and coming,
Noc
Yeah thats the right word :)
Love the statues. Did you base coat them in the verdigris color and then highlight up to the regular bronze, or did you wash the blue/green on at the end?
I based them in bronze and the verdigris is a wash. it went on, dried, then dry brushed shining gold.
Great job with the statues sheep. Your gaming club is lucky to have such awesome bits of terrain. Also, past the grenadiers, what are your next plans for the death korp?
The army is going on hold for awhile because i'm joining the army, and so won't have the spare time.
Sheep, I think the bases could have used some Mister Surfacer to add another dimension to them, but otherwise, they look great.
What is Mr Surfacer?
3 marine "saints" that were the last of a heroic stand or successful conquering, on the planet you are playing on?
Yeah they were supposed to look like a mausoleum
those statues are an amazing idea!

1:brass, any colour will do, i used a cheap acrylic
2:Dry brush, heavily, shining gold
3:add the verdigris, a wash of watered down hawk turquoise
4:above with white added, dab this around randomly
5:dry brush shininng gold
Hope that helps mate

It's a way to remove imperfections from the surface, or to add texturing to a surface, depends on how you apply it. It's from Gunze.
http://www.swannysmodels.com/Surfacer.html
"While I am personally focused on model aircraft the possible uses for this stuff extend far beyond this facet of the hobby. For Treadheads you can use this to make weld seams, antislip surfaces on the tops of tanks and on the base for accumulated mud and dirt."
There's an Osprey book on modelling armour, a bit like the FW masterclass, but more on assembly and conversion than the FW book has, that goes over it and has some great examples in it as well.

just curious where you sourced the base moddels from or where they hand built?
Very nice work on those statues, ant chance of an explanation on how you did the bonzework?

Sheep, just have to say, finished reading this log after 7-8 days of reading during/after work.. Lovely stuff, Very impressive camo pattern on your Krieg, I have a similar, though using the Canadian JTF2 Black carapace armour and Dark Green camo pattern in a similar vein as yours.
Tanks looks really good. I am definatly subbed to this plog, as you bring alot of great ideas to learn from. keep up the good work
The guy that donated them had already destroyed it, so we reassembled the torso, the legs and groin were beyond saving though
That made me cringe for a second there!!
The statues were really effective, if i ever get around to making any scenery, i may have to try that method.

Fantastic statuary!
Simply amazing work, I just subscribed to keep track of all the great painting in here. I'm thinking of starting IG, and was planning on using the Pig Iron Kolony heads on the Cadian bodies, and I may have to *ahem* borrow this camo pattern. Though, I have to say, I've done Oakleaf and Pea Dot before...on 15mm Germans. Let's just say I dreamed in Pea Dot for days on end and leave it at that.
Love the Mortians by the way, you should send pics to the folks over at heavy-support and show them how sexy their tanks can look.
Keep up the outstanding work, will wait anxiously for the next update.

Finally, a holiday from Sheep's log haha! What will you be training for? I'm afraid I couldn't work out the abbreviation you referred to earlier in your plog.

Survived boot camp, sprained an ankle, but its all good, won't have anytime to paint in the forseeable future, maybe in about a month (although my GF packed all my stuff away into storage so couldn't if i wanted too).
Just letting you all know i'm alive and i'll paint when i can, maybe the new space hulk stuff, i'll definately be getting one of those.

Well I got back classed :( oh well.....but the bright side is now i'm graduating in the centenary class :D Its going to be a massive parade, and will be getting some blue blood imported for the day, hopefully harry, getting smashed with him would be a blast i'm sure. . .
In other news, i'm on xmas hols, and this means i've been reunited with my paints and models, unfortunately both my airbrushes died of neglect while i was gone, apparently leaving them on the verandah for 6 months is not conducive of a long and happy life, so painting on these >

Also have to make a start on this lot, as it is my army lacks AT firepower, so hopefully this will rectify that shortcoming. . . . .

Hey sheep, what ever happened to that Half-track??? it looked sooo promising :D
Hey Sheep, great that youre back! it sucks that you got back squadded though!
When i did basic, youre greatest fear was being pulled out of your platoon and put in "Hunter" platoon with the Biffs for re-training....
Onto models though, Youre crazy! you could have paid off youre morgage by now! But 9 DKOK las cannon teams? That is a whole bucket of "FREEM!"
Color schemes, I'd repeat your current camo pattern, as i found looks quite cool to have your infantry and vehicles sharing the same camo pattern.
Regardless I'm loving your work keep it up buddy....

Thanks for the comments guys
somehow your scheme makes them look MORE aggresive, nice work sheep!
the termies? Thankyou :)
So this is the problem i ran into assembling the heavy weapons, the one on the left is for the mobile weapons :(
http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m289/Sheep_06/Update2001.jpg
I first cut under the guidance slide horizonally, then cut down through the middle of the two poles, carefully, making sure i didn't cut through the guide. Then, cut though the legs following the shape of the boxy bit on the short leg. Leaving me with 2 pieces.
http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m289/Sheep_06/Update2002.jpg
Cleaning up the cut, i then glued it back on to look like the other one, if you get carried away you could GS at this point, but its all going to be hidden by the weapon, so im not too fussed :)

Bloody gorgeous mate. Gorgeous enough to make one largely overlook the shortcomings of the resin (a few bent barrels).
Only criticism is that you need to finish painting the mortar on a few of the bricks :)
Are those from the 1/48th or 1/35th Tamiya sets?
Thanks chap, yeah the bent barrel turns up in the pics unfortunately, but its not noticeable IRL, the mortar is because i was rushing to get it done, just wanted to finish something lol.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Sheep mentioned that he uses Macharius Orange(not familiar with GW paints) washed over several different metallic colors, though I could be wrong. Either way, the effect is superb.

The plate was painted as an experiment, from memory, because i forgot to write it down:
1. scorched brown all over
2. dry brush chainmail
3. paint the whole thing in watered down solar macharius orange, 2:1 water to paint
4.while the above is stil wet, tiny spots of watered down browns, black dabbed into the orange. Let it dry completely
5. drybrush chainmail again
6. wash with slightly thinned devlan mud

Its not a miscast issue, its a pose issue. The ones that are supposed to be mobile need to be converted so that i can use them as static weapons, I really don't mind so much, its just something i didn't think aboiut when i tried to save 15 pounds when i bought the teams.
Anyway . . .
Finished the second heavy weapons team, a Lascannon this time, i'm not particularly happy with the brick colour, as i gave my pot of terracotta away middle of this year i had to mix the colour today, and it a bit too red. . .

Hmm. Without sounding too much like a suck up id say thats just brilliant. I like the red brick colour and i love the rusted effect on the heavy weapon and wire. Weathering powders ?
Honestly Sheep, while most of it looks great, the lone standing corner piece (because that's what it's designed for) looks a bit ********, it just doesn't work.

Thanks mate, no weathering powders on my infantry, its all paint, theres alot of layers of washes etc, but the orange is just really watered down Solar macharius orange.

I kind of agree mate, i was trying to suggest a door frame, but I guess i failed :( Oh well, its there now, and if really bothers me i'll tear it off later and fill the gap with grass and leaves :D
Cheers
Sheep
Well, add in a twisted to hell "hinge" and a few chunks of door, and then I'd say "Brilliant!"
I think it would be worth re-doing the brick colour when you get some more terracotta and i was also going to mention the lonely brick section but it seems that it's been covered.
The rust on the gun looks great, esp on the wheels.

Great to see you back and painting again, and must say, your brushwork is as good as ever.
I'd agree with the door frame comments though. It is sticking out like a sore thumb, and doesn't quite say "door frame" yet. If you spruce it up with some balsa that's been splintered and charred then it may start looking more the part. Or tear it down/cut it back some. Your call.

No mate just a single flash a very common military symbol. The tropic strawberries (US 25th Inf Division) in Hawaii have a lighting flash symbol for example.
If you go back about 50 pages, you'll find an argument over that, 'Mute. It can be summed up with Col Jacka's signature quote and "here's a spoon and a bag of cement..."
Although I have to say on most of Sheeps helms, the flashes are a lot more vertical, these are almost horizontal by comparison.

2. HT
3. HT and white 1:1

Try experimenting with cellophane plastic wrap and glue.
Do you have any transparent paint?
Not a bad idea that, I only have clear red i think.
Cheers
Sheep
Use the cellophane to make your shape, pour in the glue, let harden, remove.
For the transparent paint, make your own with 10:1 clear medium (ie gloss or matte, etc) and 1 part paint. If you want it less transparent, 5:1 should work too, just experiment a bit.

Sheep I would be curious to any details you could give me as to how you pulled off that carapace vertical lines approach. Either your palette, the size of the brush etc. any methods or tricks?
Well its pretty simple really:
1. Hawk turquoise and black 50/50
2. HT
3. HT and skull white 50/50
Paint the first colour on roughly with a size 3 brush, making sure that there is some black left and that the clour goes on with a "spiky" edge. Next colour on with a size 2 same principle. And finally the lines go on last with a 5/0 brush, painted on perpendicular to the armour edge.
Hope that helps

Hey Sheep,
amazing tervigon there, looks spot on :-)
I have a question, since I don't have the codex yet:
What options are must-have for the Tervigon?
Since I want to build one, too, just seeing all these tervigons pop up makes me want to build one.
Does it have to take 4 Scything Talons etc.
A quick respond with some infos would help me very much :-),
now up to your next creation, you....sick hive mind ;-)

Awesome Tervigon, Sheep, well done on the paintjob too. I think the gloss on the sacs will really top it off.

The options are pretty limited codex wide now, and yeah its gotta take 4 scy tals to start, or you can gice it crushing claws. the other options are adrenal glands, toxin sacs, acid blood, implant attack, toxic miasma, regeneration, and 2 psychic powers.
Hope that helps.

Going to be honest sheep as Im a massive fan of your stuff and Ive been eggerly awaiting this tervigon painted... i dont like it.
The yellow sacks look like pustules, not an amniotic sack, and whilst I can see what you were trying to do with the veins, the yellow means they dont work.
Please have a second crack at this... I know a lot of people like it but I know you can do better stuff. I'm sure it'll grow on me but at the moment the yellow stands out a mile.
Thanks for your honesty mate, I appreciate it, and i can see where you are coming from, however, i'm using a limited palette for the nids, and the yellow was the only option as far as colour choice goes.

I agree with both you and Sheep on this one. For the sake of realism the amniotic sacks could have been painted differently, but sometimes limiting your color pallet for a more cohesive impression is more important. When included in the main army, I'm sure the Tervigon will look mighty fine :)
Also love the Vultures, I should really get one of those. And an airbrush, damnit.
Airbrushes are such an under-utilized tool IMO. There to me still seems this stigma by modelers that an airbrush is "cheating".
It takes a lot more skill to use an airbrush than most people think. It's easier, true, when you get the hang of it and makes vehicles not as daunting but it's not like a primer can. Can't just pick it up, put paint in it and spray and expect good results. If anyone could airbrush like a top paid detailer working in a custom shop we'd all be making $60-80/hour doing it.
Sheep has skills. I need to get off my butt. Picked up the new Badger 105 Gravity Feed almost a month ago. It's still has yet to even have the airline hooked up to it.

Asi: Not a problem at all mate, thanks for helping out :)

Your a sick sick man sheep. Ever heard of a movie called Teeth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teeth_film)?
Gunships look really nice, can you do a walk-through on the camo?

Thanks, It was getting on my nerves how everyone was saying how beautiful all those tanks looked and I couldn't even look at them.
Bell of lost souls has a painting comp running atm, and I entered my Tervigon, you are of course free by dint of the democratic process to vote for anyone you'd like, but a bit of harmless favoritism would be appreciated ;)
Linkylinklink (http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2010/02/voting-bols-tyranid-challenge-finalists.html)
Some amazing entries in here btw, so i'm not actually expecting to win, just happy to have been picked as one of the top 10, albeit at #10 lol.
Melchiah: Cheers mate, nah sorry never heard of it, but i'll look it up now.
The models sprayed two tone, top black, bottom white, then the tops sprayed with tausept oche, the whites touched up with skull white obviously, then the dots are added with tamiya german green i think, no paints with me atm sorry, apply decals, then apply a filter of bleached bone. Then weather to taste and paint the details.
Hope that helps :)
Cheers
Aaron
I don't know, yours still looks pretty good in comparison to some of those.

There is something unnerving about Tervigons in general, but I voted for you anyways.:shifty:
I voted for you as well. Since you said you were going to be gone, and then the contest came up, I'd try to nominate you by proxy anyway, hehe.
Thanks guys :) appreciate it.
I saw your comment on the Bols thread Faolan, ta :D
Looks like Simon's walked away with it though :( can't blame him though, it is an amazing model, just not as niddy as i think it should be.

I apologize for the crap pics again, the light here is terrible, i'll try and get some in the daylight tmrw.

Top notch work as always. Could we get a recipe for the metals? Love the way they came out.

Romanus: ta, i'll find out how serious soon :( I have alot of the AoBR orks tucked away, so i might make a go of it, esp since i've fallen in love with the new dredds and kans. If i'm headed up that way i'll def send you a PM :)
iPaint: thanks mate, the metal was just boltgun metal, washed with devlan mud, and highlighted with chainmail. Quick and easy, this will be a TT standard army, nothing too outrageous.
