END EDIT

Well guys, time to jump on the bandwagon.

I present to you Sheeps project log – 1st Krast Sturmtruppen. An Imperial Guard drop troop army.

This army really started months ago in my head when I read the trilogy Axis of time by Australian author John Birmingham. The short version is a modern day battle group gets sucked through a worm hole to 1942 and proceeds to change history. The inspiration for this army comes into being because of the description of Waffen SS airbourne units in the book.

Heres the obligitory work sapce area, bit of a mess:D

1st update:
Found my camera

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m289/Sheep_06/Sturmtruppen%20Test/Impy002.jpg

This is the test Scheme, trying for Waffen SS autumn camo, the auto guns instead of las guns because i think they're a lot cooler.

And some WIP shots of my Hardened Vets

I'm really liking the scheme. Also the Hardened Vet sarge is in a very dynamic pose. Your autogun conversion is simple, yet extremely effective. After seeing your Traitors, I am full of hope for this army.

please don't give every last trooper an MP-40-alike. They may all have them in the Indiana Jones films, but most soldiers still had rifles. It is a very nice conversion though and I love the camouflage.

Those are some cool conversions, I especially like the detail like the exposed trigger finger on the painted trooper. Nice colour scheme as well. What does the runic "s" on the side of the helmet designate?

Your converted lascarbines or autocarbines are extremely nice, your camouflage scheme is good and your hardened veterans is very good. Keep us updated!

totally inapropriate for someone of my advanced age but ....DUUUUUUUDE, SWEEEEEET!!!!!!!!!.

Fantastic job on the camo, really nice representation of the autumn oakleaf. please tell me any vehicles (drop sentinels.... it is possible to convert if you dont want to FW them) will be in an appropriate german camo (The 4 tone winter one springs to mind).

In fact don't waste time to tell me....just get on with it and create more!!

Lovely conversions! I fell in love with your autoguns. Simple, yet very effective. The helmet is good, and I too loved that trigger finger.

The camo is awesome as well. My only criticism is that you highlighted the underside of the backplate, helmet and shoulderpad. It looks a bit weird to me.

Keep it coming, I feel inspired to start cutting away at my own lasguns now )

Thankyou all for your kind comments, makes me much surer(sp?) of the camo scheme.

Robot2000: Most of them will have the sub-machine gun style auto-guns, I think it looks more like a MP-5, or even a Tompson, the Mp-40 would have a skinnier body and longer barrel.
I am toying with the idea of a section sniper, not as the heavy weapon, like some modern day ranger units have a single soldier armed with the M-14, maybe a las gun with a scope, hmmmmmmmm thinking thinking. . . .

Crazy Ivan: The S on the test guys was a bit of a laugh that turned out looking good, since the scheme is SS based i thought what bthe hell and painted an S. now it looks good and i'm not sure if i should keep it.
If i do keep it it will become the regimental symbol for the Sturmmtruppen drop regiment.

Konrad: What do you mean? They don't have it :o I figure if every model in the army has the same or similar army and i pay the points for carapace, then they have carapace.
one of the armies strengths is the camo, and too much armour would cover too much camo. Plus i'm going for the elite regiment look, and like delta force my guardsmen may modify they're uniforms at will, some may end up with more armour, we'll see.

Old Guard: Thankyou, high praise from someone of your prolific and quality guard collecting calibre. Which winter camo scheme in particular? Got a link? I was thinking of simply painting it in oakleaf too.

Thankyou all again for your interest and comments, any ideas etc please let me know.

I'll se if I can find a picci, it was a variation on the 3 tone scheme of then used. instead of sand, grey was used (slightly darker than codex) red brown (terracota/bestial mix) green (catachan would do) and white. Butas i said I'll have a hunt tonight and see what I can find.
oakleaf on a vehicle might look 'too busy' if you know what I mean.

re the 'S'; a single one with possibly an arrow on the bottom signifying a lightning strike would not be IMO bad taste.

Well update time, no new pics unfortunatly soon my pets soon.

Some work time has been lost to the terrible maw that is christmas. yesterday and the day before spent on the Gold coast shopping for presents. this has obviously curtailed my spending some what.

To make matters worse, last nite while i was a work (as a bar tender) a woman of indigenous origin decided to attack my car with a shoe. after breaking the aerial and smashing the entirity of my drivers side rear vision mirror she scampered in to the night.

Put together 4 more hardened veterns, and started modifying heavy weapons too look like they are air dropable and man portable. Done a las cannon, considering using the scout heavy bolter for the basis of both the bolters and the autocannons. Donations gratefully accepted ;)

jon23516: close its actually the catachan officers powerfist :p

Astador: see above

Old guard: Not bad, but that looks even busier then the autumn to me, and yes hetzers were the shiz. With the vehicular camo, i was going to increase the size of the idividual colours, i think i could work, we'll see.
RE. the S, do you think its in bad taste?

Cheers for the positive comments, keep 'em up.

Now THAT is how a proper work space should look like.
And a jolly good job on the Cadians i might add. Splendid camo theme and some "MP5-las" goodness.

RE. the S, do you think its in bad taste?

No! as I mentioned it's inkeeping with the army, Droptroops= lightning strike! If there were 2 then that would be a different matter, but just the one is fine IMO.

Re the photo...Bless you ! I feel so much better about the state of my study (despite 'she who must be obeyed's; comments) having seen that!!!

Look's good so far Sheep =)
Love the autumn pattern cam's, wanna redo the auscams on my westralians?
If anything the autoguns resemble the m3 greasegun more than anything else, certainly not the MP40.
Vehicle wise, if your looking for some more ideas, try getting a hold of Panzer Colors (silly american spelling) by Squadron/Signal Publications, its a series of 4 books with some decent pictures and colour plates and info.

Very nice indeed Sheep,

Though I must tell you that my Blood Ravens will make short work of these guys when we have a game :D

For vehciles the classic tri-colour (Desert yellow, Red Brown and Dark Green) or ambush schemes are also perfectly kosher for a winter theme, just whatever you do use Tamiya paints on the vehicles, not GW.

That said, I think you should have a go at doing the whitewashed scheme we saw in the military modelling magazine, the one that uses the vegemite, very cool effect.

I too love the MP7, and the best thing is its a PDW (personal defense weapon), so you get to have a G36 or styer rifle too! Happy days!

Though I must tell you that my Blood Ravens will make short work of these guys when we have a game

We'll have to do that soon, for firebase no doubt.

Looked through the battle force i bought today, and to my suprise i found 6 heavy weapons sprues, but no crew, back to the shop tommorow to get this fixed.

Called on a friend for some bits and picked up a scout heavy bolter and some useful webbing from the scouts sprues, expect more assembly soon.

Work progresses apace (a slow pace) on psinting the already assembled hardened veterans.

Thank old guard.

Sure i can do a step by step, its a pain in the **** though. Photos later.
1.Under coat black
2.Base coat the fatigues in a mix of (wait for it) Graveyard earth, Codex grey and Tenticle pink!
3.Wash with warterd down tamiya smoke with a little codex grey and scorched brown
4.Re base coat with #2
5.Add splotches of the orange (blazing, fiery, graveyard earth, codex grey), and the black (chaos black, scorched brown)
6.Go back and dot the large space between the splotches with the two colours that aren't there.
7.Really, really, light dry brush of bleached bone
8.Wash with a very watered down (really really watered down) black ink.

Rather involved but it looks good.

For the vehicles i still don't know, i think i'll give an up sized verions of oakleaf try. We'll see how that goes.

Lots of gubbinz have been added, theres a search light, improved comms, hunterkiller missile, all from the space marine vehicle sprue. As well as additional sensors from the predator turret.

The heavy flamer is actually the multilaser trimed of sll the technical stuff and a terminator heavy flamer added to the front.

Firstly the progress on the vets has stalled due to apathy on my part, I found that i enjoy painting vehicles much more so i have started on a parallel project "The 3rd Krast Armoured 2nd company"

The 1st tank i've started is the tank aces, an Exterminator pattern Leman russ. I used plasti-card to create Aplique Armour, reping extra armour, and expanded the turret. Stowage was found from many sources, mainly the imperial guard tank sprue.

I wish you could still take the exterminator in regular Guard armies, but alas they went the way of the Squat.

I'll be painting more oif the vets soon, just bought a Vallejo model paints set, so true german colours will be added. Specificly the mixing of camo and feild grey uniforms.

Well I'm going to be nitpicky because there's not much else to say (bar repeating the praise form others): on the Russ, I don't find it wise to store two jerricans of gas on the front of the tank. It'll blow at the very first shot...

Unless that's not gas but orange juice for the crew. ;) And still, I wouldn't store it there.

love your guys sheep, the gun conversion is excellent as is the filed down helmet.
as for the gas cans on the front. Gas cans don't explode when shot at (unless it sparks which is highly unlikely) i would have said the same thing about them exploding if it weren't for "Inventions that changed the world" with Jeremy Clarkson, a great TV show where he ran about with guns in one episode.

The gas cans can ignite, if you fire tracer rounds into them but for 40k, there are lots of "fire" based weapons that would probably set them aflame, plasma, melta, laser, missiles etc etc. But as this army is somewhat "realistic" in its theme, I wouldnt care too much

Enought rant, its looking great isnt it? :)

Also progress pics of the Hardened veterans sometime soon too.

@glenning: Thanks i think it ties the two seperate forces together.

On the great gas can debate, if its diesel, it would be very hard to ignite with normal weapons fire, plus the explosion would be away from the tank, removing the paint from the front armour.

It would be a problem i combat i concede, but removing them for the somewhat questionable *realworld* physics in 40k seems to me to be more work then its worth.

Lovely work Sheep :D.

Sure mate.
1. Cut straight through the stock of the lasgun so its level withe the forward sight
2. Remove the lasgun magazine, replace with a piece of plasti card, i used a strip, 1.5mm thick, by 2mm, clips vary in size so any length will do within reason
3. Take a piece of plastic rod cut a piece 3mm long, glue to the front of the gun
4. Once its dry drill out the barrel.

The basis for the conversion is a space crusade era tarantula, the barrels ae current IG AC's.

Just one thing about the autogun Sheep; how do you get the plasticard to stay in place? I imagine that it would be pretty fragile and irritating to glue.

I use super glue, zappa gap to be specific, no problems yet. Plastic cement would give the same if not better result

The plasti card is about the same width as the original power cell anyway, plenty of contact.

From memory its Boltgun metal, drybrushed Chainmail, then washed with a Taniya smoke/black ink/chestnut ink/graveyard earth 40/40/9/1, thinned with water 1part ink to 2 parts water, this was washed over the whole model.

Hope that helps mate.

I don't blame most Europeans for hating germens from 1939-45, you're entitled to your opinion and i respect you for saying so.

In my defence the only "german" things are the camo pattern, which is currently being reintroduced to the armed forces of Germany, Sweden and Denmark, and the runic S, which the germans stole anyway.

Not trying to start a flame war just getting my opinion on the matter out there.

*Edit* Oh and i really like the camo, Flecktern (http://www.henrikc.dk/camouflage/comparison/comparison%20Danish%20M84%20and%20German%20Fleckta rn.jpg) i think its called now days, similar patterning to the SS Oakleaf A (http://www.atthefront.com/guni_SScamotunic_oak.jpg).

In the link above the new German camo is on the left and the Danish is on the right.

acteuly i dont hate al german soldiers they werent aware of the treu nazi meaning, and acteuly they were poor people. i only treuly hate the ss and the ''hittler staff'' for the holocaust, their ideas to steal from the poorest of all and killing for fun.

seriusly germans arent that bad a bit arrogant for speaking german eventhough they are in another country (yes i live in limburg).

anyway thats my opinion if you want to discus pm me dont flame the treads.

but as far as the painting its good i just dont like it, its the van gogh vs rembrand van rijn discussion.

The way i paint stubble:
1.Paint your skin tones as normal
2.Mix a little Dwarf flesh into some codex grey, stipple this around the jaw line where the beard would grow
3.Stipple fortress grey over the codex.

Thats it, hope that helps.

I don't know how I've never posted on this log before... these guys are great and I know I've seen at least one of them before and my jaw dropped. The applique armor on the exterminator is awesome. My favorite however is the vet sarge from the hardened veterans. I just read through this whole log and saw the unpainted vet sarge and really liked the pose. It was complete when I saw the awesome paint job. As a guard player, I have to say that its one of the best guardsmen I've ever seen. The stubble looks brilliant as well.

Cheers

Sure mate.

This is the only photo i have in WIP stage, the PF is from the catachan officer, head from the tank sprue, the out streched arm is the pointing arm from the HW sprue.

For the auto pistol, it the same as the autogun, you just have to to cut a little bit more of the rectangular part off. leaving the a little bit of the triangle there.
