View Full Version : Favourite IG Tank

Mr Zephy

So, what is your favourite Tank model, and why? No superheavies allowed.

Mr Zephy
16-12-2006, 17:45
My favourite has to be the Armageddon Pattern Basilisk. Pure armoured long range death.

Splagbot
16-12-2006, 17:50
I'd have to go with the Leman Russ battle tank, just a plain simple non variant one, it's probably the one tank most people would name if asked to name an IG tank and it's got a weapon for every occasion.

It was also the first tank I ever bought, I got it when the IG where re-released in second ed.

im a pyromanic at heart, so i voted for hellhound.

Tanith Ghost
16-12-2006, 17:56
The ever reliable Leman always does right by me. Capable of wiping out infantry by the squad, and also equipped to eliminate vehicles.

The superior frontal armor means the Leman can go head on against the strongest tanks the enemy has. Even the Hammerhead's railgun need a '4' to crak it. In reply, the lascannon drills into the hammer head's 12 sides.
The battle cannon, while needing a '5', rolls two dice to penetrate.

As such, The Leman is always a staple of my army, most often two.

Go the Hellhound! Love just flaming everything on the board. I use them mainly in groups of two great stuff

Nothing beats the good ol Russ.

1. Battle Cannon, the bane of MEQs everywhere.
2. AV14, which lets it absorb firepower.
3. It is cheap! The Leman Russ costs a fraction of the cost of the Land Raider, and deals out much more damage and is just as resilient.
4. Reliable. Never have I seen the Leman Russ not be reliable. Ever.

Lucius Pattern Baneblade - You just can't beat it....:evilgrin:Hi, you failed to notice that superheavies are ruled out.

--

From that list I'd go for a chimera just because I like how they look and they've always served me well. They're nothing special, but they never let me down.

However, I like my Leman Russ of big burny death I cobbled together with VDR - inferno cannon and three heavy flamers. It's silly, but it's fun.

There can only be one possible answer: Leman Russ. Why? Because...well, it's not only a tank, it's a symbol, everyone knows it, the kit is ancient by now, yet it's the coolest around. And in-game, it's also a great thing to have.

I had to go for 'other' in the shape of the Destroyer Tank Hunter. A really nasty piece of kit IMHO. I love the idea of it picking off advancing enemy armour from concealed ambush places. Plus the model looks good (always a bonus)

MegaPope
16-12-2006, 21:48
I agree with Sigur on the standard Russ. The model is absolutely iconic. Now that the Rhino has been redesigned, the Russ must be the oldest plastic kit still in production. GW churned the first one out way back in 1994, and even after 12 years with only minor upgrades, I can find very little fault with it. The only real flaw with the basic kit is that the turret is a little too cramped for the size of the gun. If you notice, all of the FW upgrades dealt with this problem in some way, leaving combined kits that are damn near flawless.

Apart from that, just like the background says, it's a design that has stood the test of time like no other!:D

The Chimera also falls pretty much into this category- another classic design that it simply isn't necessary to remake.

Nothing beats the Vanq! Best tank killer around (apart from the Destroyer, which comes a close second because it's not turreted).

Sir Valont
17-12-2006, 01:28
What about the Demolisher?

Its by far the best tank in the game. AP1 ordinance S10-doesnt get better than that. I go for triple HBs but multimeltas can be decent to.

But the reason Demolisher is the greatest is it's AV13 side and 12 rear.

For me it's gotta be the Leman Russ Exterminator.
A bargain for the point cost and it cleans up infantry like noboby's business and even does pretty well against light armoured vehicles.

FraustyTheSnowman
17-12-2006, 02:04
Exterminator. Easy and cheep to build, looks cool as hell, and cheap as far as tanks go.

I realy like the look of the chimera, but to me it's just not a tank.

Axel
17-12-2006, 12:00
My most "favourite" modelwise is the LR Thunderer. It looks like a real streetfighter. Alas, ruleswise it is crap. You get a better tank with the demolisher for the same points.

For efficiency, I join the Vanquisher crew. Better then the Destroyer in both range (if that ever matters) and variability. Every tank army should have at least one of them.

That said, my main battle tank is the vanilla Leman Russ.

Getz

Leman Russ Exterminator

Cheaper than a Standard LR and with an all Heavy bolter secondary armerment + a heavy stubber can move 6" and lay down 14 shots a turn.

I take 2 (that I converted using Cadian Autocannon) in my Guard Army.

I use them as mobile Bunkers/Bullet Magnets and keep them slightly ahead of my gun line.

I remember when the original Citadel Journal rules for the conqueror came out, back when it was one of the first turret varients from forgewold. I think the conqueror cannon was a S8 AP3 Heavy 1, Blast. It was awesome back in early 3rd edition when move and shoot ordnance was unheard of. No other reason needed nor wanted, a giant gun is all I need. Sure, it may not be the biggest, but it's certainly the most oversized.

That's a good one!

I cast my vote for the Leman Russ Vanquisher. It has all the awesomeness of the ubiquitous MBT, but with longer range, and more tank slaughtering goodness.

The Demolisher; packs alot of very heavy weapons, and the biggest of them is so strong that the Adeptus Astartes tried to copy it.
They've put it on some low AV (yes, compared to a real demolisher, that's low) and under-armed old Rhino :eyebrows:

Ill be sure to blow up the next one I encounter.

It HAS to be the Death Korp Leman Russ Vanquisher, its the most effective tank in the 40k game easily.

then I would say the Bombard, who the hell does not want a 7" ordnance blast template hey?

That would be the new Krieg Vanquisher. And the Hydra as an close 2nd.

And on a side note, whats with the dice thing? (I've really been away for to long).

Personally...Leman Russ Exterminator...

Mmmm....so many anti-infantry shots...*drools*

You too! I thought I was the only one. :wtf: Being able to move 6", shoot 9 HB shots and 2 TL autocannon shots plus 3 HS shots! Even marines would soil their armor!

Woops, there's like 50billion Exterminator fans.

First I'd like to say that like most of you, I believe the Vanilla Russ is the best all-round tank, as well as standing tall as the most iconic piece of vehicle kit in the game. Alas, my vote goes to the ARTEMIA PATTERN HELLHOUND, absolutely stunning on the tabletop, and letting loose your inner pyro on the enemies of the Emperor is, well, priceless.

Stock Russ, with almost all variants a close second (including FW pattern variants). If the Ragnarok was made for 40k scale as well as Epic, I'd vote for it instead. Those Krazy Kriegans.... :skull:

Nothing beats the good ol Russ.
4. Reliable. Never have I seen the Leman Russ not be reliable. Ever.

Come watch one of my games - fired from 3, and two got scattered straight back into my allies untis;one went back into another tank (bassie - not nice...)

Leman Russ Vanquisher.

Just like a Sherman Firefly really.

In gaming terms, the Leman russ is the most versatile for my needs and always performs well. In terms of theme/cool model then the FW griffon wins it. It looks phat, costs peanuts in points and packs a nice heavy mortar.

I like the Vanquisher both because it is an extremely efficient combat vehicle and it looks very cool. The basic Leman Russ and the Destroyer Tank Hunter are both very close though, and I wouldn't argue with anyone who chose either of them.

I have never heard of this little bloke. Is it a light tank. What are the stats for the beast. Wouldn't mid it in 40K. It would be a good drive train for conversion.

Nah it's a proper heavy tank, not sure of its epic stats but there's a Xuchi-untypable-liabra made one in MP&T here http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=73328

I'd have to say the Leman Russ Demolisher. Rarely did i find a table where you had the full 72"(?) range, so the demolisher didn't lose much there due to its short range. And it could blast apart termies, the one weakness of the imperial guard. Ah, fond memories of blowing up a deepstriking deathwing squad replete with sword of secrets on the turn it appeared. Happy days. =)

Leman Russ Exterminator. 14 shots, on the move. Take that!

There's also a very big place in my heart for the Demolisher, but the Exterminator is just a little more me...

Serpent

I have to second, or third, or fourth, that opinion.:D

Standard Leman Russ. I just like the look of it. I've got my IG Leman Russ, and my Ork looted Leman Russ and when I've got more money I'll have an armoured company with lots of Leman Russ.

The Hellhound is a spectacular deal at its point level, and the second chance to hit models with the template is ideal for the BS3 guard. I also think the fuel tanks and turret are good bits.

Why will the Guard prevail? We have more son, we have more.
