View Full Version : Sheep's Little Log That Could
Hi guys, well why would any sane man have 2 project logs, well the answer is i'm not sane :D
This log will hopefully grow slower then my other sturmtruppen (http://warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59410) log, because its a log of distractions, those things that always get in the way and stop you finishing the army of your dreams.
Its all Boss_Salvages fault "What are those hounds for?" he says innocently enough. Then i think, yeah those hounds have sat bthere for ages, i think i'll paint one!
2 1/2 hours later i get this:
http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m289/Sheep_06/Distractions/Hound002.jpg
http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m289/Sheep_06/Distractions/Hound001.jpg
And there you go, one foot on the slippery slope of distraction.
Comments, critisims and witisisms welcome.

Haha! I do what I can
That said, that is one nice flesh hound, far far far better than the official GW sabertooth ones & painted twice as nice. You've picked out the great details in there, right down to those exposed sinews ...
Distractions ftw!

Nice and clean! You forgot his feet-nails though! What about a little gorey stuff around his mouth?
A little saliva? Just opening the tin mate!

I'm really in 2 minds as tto whether or not i should put some sort of blood/saliva, because it'll show up great on the bone, but the skin is red, so not too sure.

There's is many an interesting mini in this log Sheep. Don't we all have little distractions to keep us from finishing the army we really want :)
I wish I had more time for little distractions but, alas, trying to get my marines actually finished is enough! The preachers flesh tones look especially nice and that tyranifex™ is a great conversion without having to go too overboard to set it apart.
The flesh hound however, mm mmm mmm! Looks great, and to echo what others have said, using the hound minis beats the ******** of the saber tooth flesh nibblers that apparently are flesh hounds according to GW. However, it isn't helping me as after my marines I want to start a Night Gobbo army after bullying McMullet into teaching me WFB, however I am being sorely tempted by some sort of WFB Khornate army, unsubtle and red with big axes, how can you go wrong! It really is sorely tempting after seeing him. You didn't decide to model on a collar of Khorne though, interesting - or just because you couldn't be bothered to work on it for just a distraction mini?
Nice one, good luck on continuing you distractions ;)

Thankyou very much Dicky, I thought about the collar, but i just couldn't do it without ruining the mane, i'm thinking i may do like a cuff around the ankle to represent it, WYSIWIG and all.
Glad someone noticed the reference :D Me too, such compeling story when you were between the ages of 3 - 6. Although i do prefer the version from "Major Pain" now as a grown man :D

Update of sorts:
So the local store that i'm a customer of wants to celebrate the release of Empire and are holding a painting comp to celebrate.
The model they've decided to choose is the new warrior priest range.
This is mine.

We have 3 weeks to finish, so this should get updated soon :D
Competition will be fierce, other painters in the masterclass section are, the store owner (06 GD silver winner duel), one of our mate who paints really well, and The Hoff!
Wish me luck.

Good luck with it; that's a more sound way to encourage people to soon buy things; integrating them into the hobby helpfully, aiding along the way and for those who've been into (and those who just wants) start painting competitions of a chosen theme when a new army is released for whatever game system than to just try selling things. People gets interested and loyal and buys, though the prices should be returned to 2002's level.

I agree totally, when i used to work at the games store we had a painting comp every month, with cash prizes, it was awesome. The way i look at the pricing is, its a luxury item we're buying, if you have to make the decision between food and 40k, you should probably give the hobby up for a while.

Drybrush fortress grey

Ah, should be a sweet one to see get the Sheep treatment. Very glad to see what you've changed up, should go far towards fixing this sculpt (IMO anyway) ;) ...
On the paint scheme, I vote for 1 blue arm, the rest codex. Besides that, I can't really suggest a codex scheme. Perhaps a grey one though, to go with the blue, all the other stuff? Relictors or something ... but perhaps not, that's what flashed into my head first.
- Salvage
The weapon conversion is very nicely done. I may have to do something like that on my own when it arrives.
As to a bird on a stick not being threatening I suppose it depends on how big the bird is. Personally I have alwasy thought Big Bird from Sesame Street was quite threatening, the idea of him mounted on a big stick just makes it worse.

I agree with you on the book, though it might be making an apperance on a future LR crusader.

The Sheep treatment, i like the sound of that.
I too like the blue arm concept, relictors could be interesting, I also thought blood ravens could be cool, but looking at their IA articles they follow codex, ie blue body with one arm in red.

That would be a big stick, big stick + sensitive area = angry bird

Wow! Superb work Sheep! The discolouration of the yellow is good, as is the painting of the glaive. The green tabard is still the best bit IMO, especially with the freehand on it.

Hey Sheep,
Great thread. 1st time I've seen it. I love the hounds they came out nice and the termie that you finished is awesome. Great job on the yellow that is really hard to accomplish. The yellow came out perfect. I have a quick question on your awesome cave troll what colors did you use for the striations. He came out great. One of the best I have seen. Keep it up.
The freehand on the robing and the book ([A] inset) is awesome. Any hints as I have to do a bunch of celtic knotwork on the hem of an inquisitor's cloak (the one shown in my deathwatch log).

Which striations is that? The ones on the feet, or the skin? I'll try to remember how i painted it, it was finished about 7 mths ago now.

Thanks, the only thing to remember with painting freehand, is keep your paint thinned, and go SLOWLY. Also plan ahead, try it out on a piece of paper so you can get the organisation of the lines down pat.
Hope that helps.

Fantastic work Sheep, especially the blade and the yellow on his arm - I really like how beat up that yellow looks. I have to admit a part of me is kinda thrown off by all of the bright colors going on - yellow, blue, green, orange, red (even on the base) - but all the same I can't give enough credit for attaining such strong vibrant colors. And the freehand is quite awesome too.
So excellent job, and I'm looking forward to whatever comes up next.

Yeah it is a tad bright, the base isn't that over-powering IRL, the camera loves the bases more then the model

Composition-wise, I like the use of yellow throughout, it pulls your eye from area to area , rather than sticking on one part. If the yellow was just on one point, like the arm, it wouldn't have worked as it would have been too bright, but I like the use of yellow throughout, even on the base. What I'm trying to say is, the paint job as a whole rocks, and I wished I could paint like that.

Hey Sheep
Having seen the libby in real life I must say it looks very different online lol....
Not a bad job overall , you have managed to pull off a paint job using ALOT of colours... a few less would actually improve it a little tho
After chatting with the Hoff, we also thought that for the blue and yellow to contrast better you should have a few more layers of a more bright blue... say enchanted or ultras.... tho the green may get "lost" if this happens ;) its very dull atm, (if dull is the effect you want then you really need to remove some of the other colours and put in more neutrals)
And finally I think the battle damage idea you are trying to pull off on the yellow (and blue too?) is a rough copy of an art techique called "trompe l'oeil" (its french :cries: ) originally done on minis by a guy called Cyril I believe... there could still a tut on coolminiornot.... or maybe his site? (link anyone?) it mostly involves fine outlining.... painting scratches are drawn on , mainly on the edges, then underlined with white(ish) on, mostly on the top edges and then the bottom edges are outlined in a darker colour where possible... brown, black, grey etc depending on the paint scheme...
It is a time consuming techique but when done right looks alot better.... Atm I must admit it is hard to tell if its chipping or mud spots :D
Hope that helps, thats my honest opinion
Well Chin Chin!
Thanks Bromhead, yeah i agree with you, but this mini was done as an experiment and learning experience, so i think it turned out alright.
I'll look for that tut too.

Fantasic work mate, well done, I don't mind at all, i think its flattering that you give me so much praise for helping you win that silver. From what I can see it was a great minature before i helped.

I think I'll like the purple one more with the inclusion of more strange skin tones. If there is only one stand-out skin tone it looks weird, but if there are several, or all the tones differ, I bet it will look good as opposed to strange.

The 9 Ghouls will be next. Complete w/ "Sheep's dirty thong of DEATH...I mean DOOOOM". That's such a brilliant idea. I painted some urine stains on a unit of Bull Ogres a while back. But the dirty poo poo shooter never occurred to me.

Alrite guys, sorry for the lack of updates but modeling has taken a back seat over the last week.
I was involved in a car accident in which I was slightly injured, and my Girlfriend of 3 1/2 years tragicly died.
As you can imagine this has been a time of great sadness for myself and our families and I haven't had the opportunity, or inclination to do any modeling or painting.
I'm hoping to out the other side of this a stronger person, and hope that the hobby will provide some form of stability and "normality" helping me get back living my life.

That Marine looks awesome sheep, the armours got a good amount of mud on it to make it look realistic yet you can still clearly see his armour. Also I think I'll be borrowing the bolter design for my Death Guard.

That marine is AWESOME! It really makes me miss the updates from you and SNA on the Imperial Fists battle company you were working on. It's all wonderful stuff.

That is very nice Sheep. Wish I could paint like that. The stubble on his head is awesome. Just grey, yeah? And the writing on the purity seals is immense.

Excellent marine - absolutely brilliant. Love the model, and the painting is top-notch (in particular the weathering).

Thankyou sir, i'll have a few more to post here and in the "laying log" soon.

The IF army is slowly getting finished, i'll take some more pics of the finished models later.

The stubble is as follows:
1. Finish your skin tones
2. A dark grey (i used valliejo German grey, but astronomicon would probably work) mixed with a bit of your mid flesh tone, Dwarf flesh in this case. Heavily stippled over the areas you want stubble.
3. mix some codex grey into the above mix, and stipple again, lighter.
4. Codex/fortress grey with a bit of dwarf flesh, as the final highlight stippled over the top, lightly.
Hope that helps.

Wow, that is quite a bit bigger. Well done. And thanks for the guide. BTW, is that mud or blood on his armour? I see red and brown as basically the same and can't really tell.

Sheep,
All I can say is that this piece is bad ass! Good luck in the comp. A win will be well deserved.
Thanks guys.

Its supposed to be chipped paint :cries: ;) and it is a mixture of scorched brown and beastial brown :)

Hey Sheep,
How did you do that Marine?? I see that the arms are modified Terminator arms, much like Synapses, the legs look like Terminator legs, but filled in with Green Stuff, the back pack is a normal marine one, same with the head.
My main question is how did you do the torso? Did you use the terminator front with the head arch thingy cut off then glue that to a normal marine back? I'd like to find a way to do such a conversion as I'd love to have a whole army of these giants, but my GS skills are not that great! I know that both doghouse and synapse make their own torso's, but I have been wondering if there was a way to make it out of plastic rather than scratch build.
and if I may, may I stea...err borrow your idea?
Thanks,
Chappy P!

No problem with you stealing the ideas mate ;) go ahead :D
Pretty much. The torso is the front plate of a terminator, and the back plate of a regular SM. With the collar joined with GS, and the plates smoothed over the ribs with GS too.
The upper thighs are also made from the a regular SM.
Hope this helps.

That true scale marine is intimidating indeed. I'd be tempted to make five of them for a 'movie marines' squad.
The metal parts look really good and especialy does the base.
