View Full Version : Saurus returns: 2007 project log

31-12-2006, 12:10
righto, I've been out of the loop for half a year while travelling, but my exploration of the world has also allowed me to get my hands on two brand new armies that I shall be working on as soon as I am homeward bound: Tau and Goblins. My last two armies (guard and high elves, the threads unfortunately seem to have vamoosed) were both done to very high standards, with small amounts of models. The goblins are designed to be a break from that.

My core idea for them is 'skarsnik's horde' and the sheer intimidation factor a lot of models has. As usual, I'm not trying to be particularly competitive, but they might end up being just that if I'm lucky. First off, I wanted a lot of models. A LOT of models. To that end I got me nine skull pass boxes, giving me a respectable 360 spearmen, 180 archers, 90 spider riders and 9 trolls, plus the shamans and big bosses. I added to that a single giant (mostly for all the awesome bits on it),a couple of boxes of fanatics and, of course, skarsnik himself. I'm not entirely sure what the actual points list is going to be yet, but this is what I'm planning on building with those models:

skarsnick and a great shaman

2-3 shamans, 2-3 big bosses, possibly a couple on spiders

two units of 41 night goblins- the amount skarsnick and a BSB take up in one or the other. these will have nets, spears and one or two fanatics
two units of 35 night goblins- with spears and full command
four units of twenty night goblins- with cut down spears representing hand weapons and musicians
five units of twenty night goblin archers- with musicians
60 spider riders and 30 wolf riders: these will be made using night goblin spearmen on top of the skull pass spiders. the 'wolf spiders' will have bows and the spiders paint scheme will be different, possibly including a conversion to make their legs longer to differentiate them further. they will be divvied up in units of 15, 10 and 5.

two rock lobbers and four spear chuckas: the rock lobbers will be made from two skullpass trolls, one lobbing the cow from the giant and the other hurling the fleeing empire peasant from the same sprue. they will be being held in place by night goblins using the remaining fanatic models and their chains. the remaining crew will be made from spare goblins, as will the crew for the spearchukkas, which will be scratchbuilt from plasticard.

Giant: I'll do this guy up with a lot of green body paint standing on a tall rocky outcropping to further the mountainous terrain look of the army. He may/may not have a goblin lookout post on his head.

trolls: two units of three trolls from the remaining skull pass ones. these will be converted up so they don't look so similar...

given the whole deal only cost me 500 dollars, considering I can sell off the dwarfs for 30 dollars a hit (this is australian, btw) it ends up being about the same price as two battalions. not bad when you consider if I bought the GW ones I would have had 40 night goblins, 20 wolf riders, 40 orcs and a chariot for the same price...

as far as painting is concerned, I want them to look good, but not jazz-tastic. the big units with the leaders will have flame/check patterns and other details, the minor units will not. I'm aiming for a semi-realistic look- grey-black robes, dull metal, brown/black spiders, greenish trolls and so forth, to speed up the painting I'll be doing a lot of washing and drybrushing (on metal for the latter) so I doubt they'll look particularly 'flash' up close. but lets face it, there are gonna be a lot of them, so a close view isn't THAT important.

one of the nice side effect of skull pass models is they're already mostly assembled, which will take a fair whack out of assembly time, and the models are actually quite nice, at least the goblins are....

Now, after all that speedpainting I'll want something to focus my finer skills on, to that end- tau. I love battlesuits, especially forgeworld ones, and I love the tau idea of advancing tech, so I've decided to do an experimental tau battlesuit army. To that end my purchases have been:
-2 boxes fire warriors
-3 pirahnas
-1 skyray
-1 crisis suit commander
-4 commander shadowsun
-3 sniper drone boxes
-four forgeworld shas'o R'myr
-1 forgeworld xv81 (smart missile system BS)
-5 forgeworld xv89 (heavy armor BS)
-4 forgeworld xv88.2 broadsides with SMS.

To make the following:

Shas'o: R'myr suit minus shield with some extra embelishments from various sources. Plasma and missile pod. His pose will be landing, foot down on the chest of a marine falling backwards, his plasma blaster shooting straight through the marine's face, the beam sinking into the ground behind him, making a kind of A shaped tripod so he's steady.
-2 bodyguards: these will have the shields, as well as plasma and missile pods, hunkered down like they're physically shielding the bossman

Shas'el: The last r'myr suit with a cyclic blaster from the commander replacing the twin plasmas and a burst cannon
-2 bodyguards: xv89 suits with missile pods and burst cannon.

4 stealth suits: these will all be converted shadowsun models, with burstcannons and the bottom of the shield drones mounted on their other hand like small bucklers, representing drone controlers. The unit will have eight gun drones, whose bodies will be the metal ones from the sniper drone boxes as these have sights on them.

3 crisis suits: the shas'vre will have the grenade launcher, a burst cannon and the suicide bomb, the other two will have burstcannon and flamers. all xv89

1 monat suit: the xv81 done up as a new pattern I invented for my background- xv87 'firestorm' suits. these have quad missile pods (the top two which may be replaced with seeker missiles) and fullfill an anti aircraft role. they are somewhere between broadsides and crisis suits, so this guy will have the 2+ armor upgrade thruster downgrade to represent its additional weight. Obviously it will have two arm mounted missile pods as well as the back mounted ones and I plan to convert its head (probably with the forward swept commander one) to repesent sighting gear

2x 6 fire warriors: Normally I'd love these guys, but there's no way I can fit them into the battlesuit theme other than as observers, so each unit will be done up on a little scenic base in a stealth fielded 'hide' with earthcaste, air caste and so forth observers as well as their firecaste guards. ingame, I'll count them as firewarriors with a markerlight and pulse pistols, which I don't think anyone is going to complain about

Fast attack:
3 pirahnas with fusion blasters and seeker missiles: these probably wont be used in the usual list, as they aren't suits, but I wanted to do this conversion, that being taking the front wings and flipping them so they look like mini baracudas, as well as taking the pilot and copilot and putting them back to back, and adding the skyray seeker missiles under the wings, creating something that looks vaguely like a hoth snowspeeder. given the painting scheme of the army is going to be an iceworld one, this was just too cool to pass up (I might even do a little marine army with AT-AT walking landraiders and a librarian done up as vader if I get the time)

Heavy support:
2x two broadsides. they will have the ASS, represented by being quadrupedal (two extra legs, making them look a little like starwars destroyer droids) and the team leader will have a target lock and drone controler with a couple of shield drones, allowing them to engage multiple targets and take a good bit of punishment.

3 sniper drone teams: these will be made with the remainder of the fire warriors and the sniper drone thrusters and sniper rifles as mini battlesuits. each firewarrior will have the drone thrusters mounted on either side of his backpack and the rail-rifle mounted on a bracket alongside his right arm. they'll be accompanied by drone spotters, as these are latest, latest tech and need to be individually monitored. Obviously, IG, they just count as sniper drones.

Obviously, with only about 25 models excluding drones in the army, these guys can be painted a WHOLE lot better than the goblins, and the forgeworld suits look AWESOME (as will the remainder of the conversions, hopefully). I'll be doing them in a white and grey mottled scheme, with red lenses and glowing blue lines between the armor plates. small black markings and danger warnings (yellow/black stripes, triangles etc) will add a bit of life to them, especially with the snow/iceworld bases I have planned. The stealth units will be painted stark black (though with the same blue glowlines between the armor plates) in contrast to the primarily white look of the other elements of the army.
The key theme is obviously high tech, both visually and in the army list, I'm aiming to take every single piece of special issue wargear, and I'll probably try and go with a chromey, shiney pastel look to doubly differentiate them from the grimy goblins.

Other things I have planned:
-warhammer chessboard- Classic empire vs chaos battle represented on a chessboard. The squares will alternate between green pasture and blackened, mutated ground, and there will be a chapel and a dark altar at either end of the board
-Golden Daemon entries: I'll probably be doing a wraithlord for my large model and entering models from my tau army for others (probably my stealth team for 40k unit)
-eldar: If by some miracle I get all that done, my next project will be eldar, including reapers and spiders build from plastics...

That's my plan for next year, I'll keep you all up to date as things progress. Don't expect much for a few weeks though, I don't get home untill january 16 or so, so next update will be around then.

dave is the best
31-12-2006, 12:17
Sounds really cool. hurry up and start.

31-12-2006, 13:12
Holy crap thats alot of models to paint, all I can say is good luck.

06-01-2007, 16:32
In the interests of not having this fall off the edge of the board before I get home to the goodies, I present some of my loverly concept work. Well, kinda sketchy actually. thank god for photoshop is all I can say

this is what I hope my commander will look like

06-01-2007, 17:06
Can't wait to see this one play out mate! Keep it up!

19-01-2007, 03:41
Ok, so home and spent the last few days drooling all over my precious goodies. L uckily, the package I manually sent home also Arrived so now I have everything but my new set of brushes. oh well, I have plenty to assemble, as we can see in eggzzzhibit A:

and B:

that's a lot of models.

9x skull pass, 1 giant, 1 fanatics, 4 commander R'myr, 5 xv89s, 1xv81, 4xv88.2 broadsides, 4 commander shadowsun, two boxes fire warriors, one sky ray, three pirahnas, three boxes sniper drones and the equivallent of a a wedgie administered with a crown of thorns for my bank account...

Ripping off the packaging, I got down to work. Here are some starters:

I did these earlier while in canada. These will count as sniper drones and are classed 'XV 101 firefly' battlesuits.

basically, fire warriors with two shoulderpads, the stabilisers from sniper drones mounted on their backpack and railrifles mounted on their forearm, battlesuit style. these guys still need their greenstuff...

19-01-2007, 03:46
next set, the two other things tauish I have done

First up, my 'firestorm' class suit (xv85). background wise this is an anti air suit config, in game counts as twin missilepods with targeter.

I kinda like the pose on that guy, looks like he's about to unleash some serious hell

next up, the first of my stealthsuits. The entire team will be shadowsun models, one retaining its fusion blaster. the most difficult part will be posing them all suitably differently, this was a simple and effective one, small cuts to the back of one knee and the removal of one fusion blaster and bending of that arm a little gives a nice running pose. Note the gun drones are half metal, using sniper drone bodies, as these have a lens at the front and the more complex antenna can backgroundwise hold the stealthfield

19-01-2007, 03:53
aand more. goblins this time :)

I quickly assembled a 500 point army:

goblin big boss: great weapon, light armor

night goblin shaman: nada

35 night goblins: musician, standard, spears

20 night goblins: musician, hand weapons, shields

20 night goblins: musician, short bows

8 night goblin spider riders, standard, musician, spears, shields

The full army:

20 goblins with hand weapons. I simply cut down the spears into long handled daggers on most of the models, replacing the tips with clubs and swords on some

spider riders:
Unfortunately, the standard night goblins don't QUITE fit on the spiders, but once you cut one or two feet off they do. I'll add a bit of greenstuff to these to make their robes look a little more flowing. Note I also replaced the standard head with the forest goblin one.

That's all now. Next up is building some more goblins and painting some as well

19-01-2007, 03:53
Looking good therisnosaurus! Keep it up! I'm looking forward to seeing more!

19-01-2007, 13:27

Wow, that's a craptonne of models! But impressive to see you're undaunted and have launched right in. The new Tau stuff you've come up with is very good, I like the Shadowsun stealths especially. Nice work and keep it up!

... but seriously, 9 BfSP sets ...

19-01-2007, 14:11

Nice converting on the Tau, looking forward to see how this is going to turn out.

Keep it up!

Warwolt the skaven
19-01-2007, 14:14
ok, you know I hate you? Having that much models and post them on Warseer is just rude... you make me cry. I WANT THOSE MODELS :(
lucky bastardo :P

19-01-2007, 14:23
Those tau conversions are amazing!
Good job on the gobbos too!

19-01-2007, 14:49
That's... holy crap... it's like you took the basic idea of everything and said to yourself "how can I make it MORE expensive?" :p

Joking aside that is impressive, I'll be watching closely, especially the tau as it's not that common to see very original tau armies.

19-01-2007, 15:03

*picks up jaw*

Whoaa! You must have some kind of amazing mutant superpower to be able to
a) get yourself to paint a gazillion models black&green
b) buy nine.....NINE....sweet mother of holy...nine...
c) convert a Tau army to an amazing standard in between...

Do you have too much spare time? Or did you just win the lottery? Anyway, your efforts are highly appreciated, the conversions are uber-tastic and I can't wait to see those models painted.

You should be able to claim a Guiness Book of Records entry with this project.

19-01-2007, 22:47
I'll let you all in on a little secret so far as the skull pass stuff is concerned. I bought them off the warstore, making them 33.75 US each (about 40 australian), and shipped them back to aussieland. here, they retail for 80 dollars, so I can easily sell the dwarfs for 35-40 bucks a pop. Bingo. over five hundred free goblins...

The tau, however, remain ludicrously expensive :P

19-01-2007, 22:51
OK, I'm with you on the Battle for Skull Pass boxes now... but still... Shadowsun for every stealth suit and FW battlesuits galore... I'm jealous...

19-01-2007, 22:56
I'm liking the Sniper Drones, and the spider riders look awesome, wish i'd thought of that before i ended up with 30 :D

Kasrkin 666
19-01-2007, 23:33
I agree, those Snipers kick-ass!

Dead orc
20-01-2007, 15:36
Fantastic. Really great so far! More pictures please!

20-01-2007, 15:44
The Tau conversions look fantastic. Can't wait to see them painted.

21-01-2007, 22:15
looking good

did you really buy 9 boxes of skull pass.. Are you made of money?

Kasrkin 666

22-01-2007, 05:42
Kick ass! Now Im just all intruiged by the chance of you building Eldar...hmm...plastic aspect warriors!

Have you looked at these conversions yet?
Fire Dragons (http://www.dropship.org.uk/projects/40k009d.asp)

Swooping Hawks (http://www.dropship.org.uk/projects/40k009h.asp)

Dark Reapers (http://www.dropship.org.uk/projects/40k009j.asp)

26-01-2007, 03:34
those are some nice conversions, though I honestly think he could have done a better job on the hawks, the lasguns seem just a little too bulky. In any case, if I do mine, I'm only planning on converterising the reapers and warp spiders, both from dire avenger cores.

Also, back from melbourne, it's working time. basing and spraying will be undertaken over the weekend, with painting of the first goblins beginning monday. I aim for a regiment in two days, so look for a fully completed unit by wednsday (probably the archers)

06-02-2007, 05:35
ok, update time, sorry this has taken so long. I currently have done:

20 night goblin archers

20 night goblins with HW/S.

my next project is the shaman, followed by the spider riders, boss and big unit of spears, This will give me my 500 points painted before I go down to uni. After these I will probably do one or two tau figures as test schemes.

Picture time

That unit took me about five hours of straight painting over two days, plus assembly and basing.

06-02-2007, 05:59
edit, sorry about the crummy picture quality, hopefully I can get some better ones done soon

archers, another five hour job. still hadn't quite finished them when the photos were taken

and the initial conversion work on one of my trolls

06-02-2007, 18:06
Ooof, I'm amazed at your mental powers, that's a LOT of Goblins, must get pretty boring painting the same model over and over...

Now that's some pretty bad pep-talk!

The skin and faces look really good, the units as a whole too. The individual models could use some cleaning, some of the cloaks have red patches etc. etc. The highlight on the robes is maybe a little bit too thick, but again when looking at the unit as a whole it's great.

Keep it up!

19-02-2007, 08:50
okay, updateytime mk2. 500 points is more or less done on the goblins, everything is de-sprued, resin is washed and more tau are assembled

aaand my next unit is under construction, these guys are 'wolf spiders' (wolf riders) hence being fuzzy. FUZZY WUZZY SPIDERTHS!!!

19-02-2007, 08:52
big unit of 35, the banner is still in progress and their bases need touching up

Full army so far:

19-02-2007, 08:53

A little random pic, some NMM clothwork I did on a model I did overseas I quite like

19-02-2007, 08:56
and yet more, tau this time

my as of yet unamed shas'el with cyclic blaster, missile pod, multi tracker and positional relay (will go on the back of pointing hand)

And a regular crisis suit from the elite team:

19-02-2007, 09:05
I like the sword on the Spider Rider, the green wash really fits. The white edges on the cloaks of the large Goblin unit also look very nice!

The cloak on the Farseer (I guess) is very well done, the image of space really stands out.

Tau are looking promising, dynamic poses!

19-02-2007, 09:08
Hmm, I am not into fantasy much.. but all those goblins have almost the same pose? Must be boring to paint :P
I do like those little guys though, the tau conversions look nice too!

keep it up!

28-04-2007, 05:01
Re-updated, it's been a while, and I have not been idle. Still no camera though so I can't give you many pics. Currently completed is thus:

2x 35 spearmen regiments
3x 20 archer regiments
1x 20 HW/S regiment
2x shaman
1x big boss
2x bolt thrower
10x spider riders
10x wolf spider riders

assembled and in production
10x spider riders

Currently assembled but not painted is thus:
1x 42 spearmen (skarsnik's unit) with 2 fanatics
1x giant conversion
1x stone thrower conversion
3x 20 archer regiments
1x skarsnik

Soon to be assembled:
2x 35 spearmen regiments
1x stone thrower conversion

Frontline reports: The army is currently sitting at 6 wins to 2 losses, coming in 18th at conflict victoria.

Hopefully I'll be able to speed paint my way to komplete fanatik, 4000 points of fantasy goodness. The army list I'm planning on taking to that is here:
complete fanatik crazy killer horde of ultimate squishing (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1508952#post1508952)

28-04-2007, 11:01
I am most impressed by your painting skills.

The Tau too are looking awesome and can't wait to see them with a lick of paint on.

28-04-2007, 14:06
Some of your goblins are on big bases it looks like. Where are those from?

The Judge
28-04-2007, 15:16
This is looking like a very nice log so far... the tau conversions are excellent!

13-06-2007, 02:09
further updates:

since last update, I finished the spider riders and painted another sixty archers, as well as skarsnick, who won the open fresh-from-the-forges competition at GW melbourne central, netting me the O&G army deal, handy :D.

I'm currently frantically assembling the last few regiments of NG foot (2 more units of 35 spears and 10 more goblins for my unit with HW/S) and will paint them all in one big batch of over a hundred infantry. fun fun.

From then on, I need only do a couple more units of cavalry, 2 spider chariots, trolls and my war machines, I've got a deadline of the 15th of july- komplete fanatic, the 4000 point australian WHF tournament!

13-06-2007, 04:37
Well... I open the first page and scroll down then *BAM* that's a hellofalottof minis you got there, and the standard is damned impressive, particularly loving the spider riders.

Consider this a subscription to your brilliant madness :).

13-06-2007, 07:02
9 Skull pass boxes?!?! That's Obscene...

13-06-2007, 09:49
LOL this is the stupidest undertaking I have ever seen.

I love it.

Having seen the Cathay project. I know, if anyone can, you can pull this off.

All the best mate,
Ill be watchinhg.

13-06-2007, 10:51
I'm sorry about the lack of photos recently, so I have invested in a top of the line webcam (read: only slightly less crap than a regular one) to take some fairly bodgy happysnaps of my progress. Bad as they are, I figure this is better than nothing, so here's a collage of progress as it stands:

note that in that very top pic, that's all the storage space I have. it is now literally SOLID with miniatures....

13-06-2007, 11:25
wow loving the giants and trolls and spider chariot and well everything, really good conversion work my friend

13-06-2007, 11:45
120 archers huh...

Have you played against someone with all your units? It would be rutheless to see how many Inner Circle Knights die from 120 Goblins shooting and biting at them, and how long it takes for the said knights to plow through them.

13-06-2007, 11:55
not that long, that's why I have the nine artillery pieces to deal with anything with a save better than nothing, the archers tend to shoot light infantry (when a lot can draw a bead), large targets, fast cavalry and very stupid skirmishers. The trick to using goblins is shoot stuff you can actually hurt (same with hitting stuff, which basically means avoiding any combat except with accuracy-challenged zombies)

13-06-2007, 14:32
Sir I applaud you for taking on such a ridiculous project. I would slash my wrists if i had to paint 120 models and that's only one unit for you...*clap clap clap*

13-06-2007, 23:21
six, actually, but I did them three at a pop :P

14-06-2007, 09:13
You are cracking on.

How big a batch were you painting your night goblins in?

I think that unit of archers is the best thing I have seen in ages.
(I thought I was dealing in big numbers on my log). great fun.

Crack on. :D

14-06-2007, 11:57
see above- I did the archers in one batch of 20, one batch of 40 and one batch of 60. My next major task is the last of the spearmen, which will be 112 in one go...

17-06-2007, 00:37
righto, I've completed my army purchase wise, sinking another couple of hundred into war machines, but meaning I now have the full 4000 points ready to go. The only reason I haven't assembled the lot of it is some bitz are still up in canberra, and Idon't get back there till next week. However, yesterday and the day before I cleaned, converted, assembled and based the following:

3 trolls
1 stone thrower
4 bolt throwers and crew,
battle standard bearer
great shaman (looks aweome)
4 more fanatics
10 spider riders
70 spearmen
2 spider chariots
1 doom diver

Now to paint them :P

19-06-2007, 13:20
2 days into the grind, working on a batch of 112 spearmen, about 2/3 done now, once they're up that's all the infantry barring war machine crews!

19-06-2007, 14:00
Excellent work mate. I forgot to say - I was distracted by the sheer numbers of greenskins - that the giant has one hell of an emotional pose. You can just see that the dude is stepping towards you hollering 'COME ON!!! COME ON BIG GUY!!! BRING IT ON!!!! BLARGHHHHHHHH!!!!' or something in the lines like that.

Cool army.

27-06-2007, 06:18
Saurus? Are you still with us mate/
Or did that batch of 112 spearmen finally do for you? :D

Push on. Once all those little blighters are done it will be down hill all the way.

07-07-2007, 03:35

spearman batch took me about four days of painting, but they're all done and dusted. Since then, I have completed

-six fanatics
-great shaman and battle standard, both converted
- 4 spear chukkas and crew
- 1 doom diver w/o crew
- the last unit of ten spider riders

left to do:
-1 level 2 shaman
-2 rock lobbers and crew (plus DD crew)
- 15 wolfspider riders
-animosity and wound markers
-4 trolls
-2 chariots

all of the above are going to be undercoated (or have been already) shortly

only one week to go before komplete fanatik! THE RACE IS ON gentlemen :D

11-07-2007, 02:10
ok it's coming close to pinch time, only three days left to go before everything needs to be done. Here's what needs doing:

finished the wolf riders, chariots and war machine crews

50% done on the trolls and stone thrower trolls, should have them finished mid today

movement trays, last shaman and 3 last fanatics have been assembled and based, need spray and paint, should be done today

EVERYTHING then needs basing and those last 4 need painting

need to write up and print out my army lists, pack my bags and pray to gork and mork I don't suffer crippling RSI the day before KF :D

11-07-2007, 11:52
With the giant I got this feeling he is trying to do some magic, am I right?

Very nice conversion!

11-07-2007, 14:19
The People Demand Full-army Shots

What Do We Want??

"full Army Shots!!"

When Do We Want It?

12-07-2007, 01:22
hopefully I'll get some of those at the tournament, so probably after the weekend

anyhoo, project update:

trolls- more or less finished, gotta do some touch ups on details but otherwise done

bases: of 195 infantry, 35 cavalry, 7 war machines and 2 chariots DONE. In one afternoon. I looked like the ****** grinch I had so much static grass all over me...

all I gotta do now is paint three fanatics, one standard bearer, one shaman and base them and a couple of models I missed.

15-07-2007, 10:58

4000 points

4.5 months actual time

3 months painting time (due to travel and exams etc)

430 models. So far not a single win :D.

I attended komplete fanatik over the weekend and suitably jaw dropped everyone with my sheer numbers. Even on an eight foot table, deployed in a linear deployment, my army took up the ENTIRE deployment zone, which unfortunately allowed some rather painful flank attacks by terror causing gribblies that ultimately spelled my doom. such a huge table size where leadership is so important is a real pain in the posterior...

Results were as follows:

first game: magic heavy high elves (teclis, archmage, prince with gem and 2 level 2's plus the gamut of magic items) and cavalry (the usual princes, helms and eagles) 18-4 loss
breakdown: with over 2000 points in characters, I would honestly have trouble making any kind of headway as most of my shooting is impartial. Teclis and his buddy archmage were the biggest problems here, both had, and used, flames of the phoenix and between them roasted four out of five of my big spear blocks.

Second game: Empire and brettonian alliance: (lots of knights of both kinds, merc giant, hypogryph, flagellants, greatswords and a few small missile support units: Draw (to them)
breakdown: terror was my undoing in this, the giant took out an entire flank on his own by scaring off all my valuable cavalry and quite a few bolt throwers and archers before finally dying to a fanatic, the hypogryph rider went up the other flank, not actually making that many run off the table, but absorbing so much firepower I have no idea how she survived (I estimate I shot it with at least 20 bolts and about 160 arrows and in the end caused 2 wounds on the griff and nothing on the character. meanwhile, I failed to do much to their big point sinks and killed a lot of smaller units.

Third game: Chaos beasts/mortals alliance: (3 big blocks of warriors, lots of small beasts and khazrak): Draw (to me)
Breakdown: more bad luck than anything else here, they really didn't do anything at all to my army, cutting down only a couple of units of spiders, archers and bolt throwers and a single bunch of spears, but I failed to do much in turn. I wiped one big unit of warriors and almost got the knights down but I spent most of the game killing little inexpensive things like hounds and chariots still, I held them off quite well IMO, just didn't really play aggressively enough

Fourth game: Dark elves pure force: (surprisingly magic lite, but toting a dragon, good shooting and a strong cavalry contingent including malus darkblade): Draw (to me)
This was by far the funnest battle, against a nice army and great players, it got very messy when some shades triggered all eight fanatics in the army simultaeneously, killing a single cold one knight and six goblins and making a veritable minefield of fanatics to run through. I finally got the gist of playing agressively with my infantry, running several units up the flank to threaten the enemy fire base later in the game, but it still didn't help. The dragon accounted for one flank and only died when a lucky rock hit him last turn and the other flank, packed to the brim with gobbos, duked it out with a bunch of knights and corsairs, eventually taking them out and gobbla ate malus in a classic general on general.

Twas a great tournament, and very educational for the next round of competition, GT melbourne coming up in september, should be fun :D

bobert the great clen one

150 models a month is remarkable.
Seriously well done.

Can't wait to see the photo's.

(I have sent you a PM regarding the other matter).

16-07-2007, 00:47
just as a note, the entire army pic might be a little difficult to pull off, firstly I lack a camera, and as stated before, when deployed the army takes up a whole eight foot by 12" deployment, more or less. It's gonna be hard to fit it all in one shot :P

22-07-2007, 07:59
ok, so I'm getting ready for the next instalment of this log- the Tau. These boys, as mentioned in the first post will be the complete opposite of my gobbos. I'll be painting each and every model individually, and probably spending between four days and two weeks on each model, aiming for at least golden daemon finals standard on each. This shouldn't take as long as it sounds, as there are only about 30 models in the whole army :P.

1850 point list:

Shaso and 2 bodyguards, fireknife configuration, 2 shield drones

Shas'el and 2 bodyguards, missile and burst cannons, shasel replaces his burst for a cycler

4 stealthsuits and 6 drones, leader with targeting array, fusion gun and lock.

3 crisis team with flamers and bursts, leader has the airburster in place of his flamer

1 monat with twin missiles, irridium, stims and a bunch of other stuff

2x 6 fire warriors with pulse pistols and a shas'ui with markerlight. These will be converted as observer teams, with 2 firewarrior guards and assorted earthcaste, firecaste commanders, low ranking ethereals, water and earth castes.

2x 2 broadside teams with ASS and 2 shield drones per team, one is a leader with a target lock.

3x 'firefly' stealthsuit teams (sniper drones). See the first page for these conversions.

Having had time to think about schemes and so forth, I'm going for a white pastel armor look, possibly with a chromey undertone (or NMM weapons). The slits in the armor will be painted to have a blueish glow and the non armor plate areas of the model will be matte dark grey with various warning symbols on them. Lenses will be green (I think). Stealth units (team and drones, snipers) will have matte black armour with the same blue lines in between the plates. The entire army will be based on slate with the odd bit of ruin and a good thickness of snow. This should give me a highly visible (bright) army from a distance that will draw the eye nicely to the lavish detail I intend to put on each model (I'm gonna be doing stuff like handpainting circuits onto the armour little warning notes and tau inscriptions, freehand detailing like bonding marks and so forth) Obviously, a display base will be made for the army as well, my plan is to have them finished by around febuary to april next year, and my project after that will be an eldar jetbike army, I think!

Anyhow, I've been doing a lot of immaculate de-mould lining on the dodgy resins I have for the suits, and should get painting within the month!

23-07-2007, 01:28
awsome work, love the giant. I did the same thing with the dragon skull on head, but yours is way better than mine. keep up the good work

05-08-2007, 08:32
good news folks! I managed to snitch a camera while I had my army out at the GW, so I have photos galore, I'll get them up ASAP. I'm also gonna try and win another painting comp with a test model :P

13-08-2007, 03:23
removed from screwup, see post below next

Awesome army bro.

Could've linked it you know...

But still the effect is there lol how we have to scroll past to view the whole damn thing!

13-08-2007, 03:56
They're finally here, the whole big host in all it's unadulterated glory. Pics left full size for more detailed viewing, sorry about the thread widening au-cause-de same.

Cheers to the good folks at GW melbourne who let me nick a table for the photoshoot. more pics coming soon.

wow, I mean WOW! that is an impressive army. it must have taken forever to paint so many gobbos. and is that a night goblin shaman rising up with WAAAGH!!! energy I see. I tip my hat to you and your awsome army.

13-08-2007, 20:28
What an amazing feat! :-)

What did you use and how did you do it on the 'fury' spiders? the look fantastic!

The whole of your army looks fantastic!

26-11-2007, 05:32
update folks, back home, set up and ready to paint tau. Also, next year's stuff just arrived, being

2 HE army boxes, 5 chariots, 3 heroes (plas) 2 mages (plas), a dragon and 3 windrider hosts. Funtimes. Won't be doing much with those boys for a little while though, tau first :D

26-11-2007, 21:13
Brilliant. What a wondreful undertaking. I can't get over you did patterns on thew hoods. I painted a fraction of the number you did and my rank and file only got plain robes and hoods. NUTTER!!! (In the best possible way). Hats off.

27-11-2007, 06:54
At first, I felt a sence of jealousy, for so much greenskins...

Then I thought... my army isn't even that much smaller :p

They're great, anyway!

28-11-2007, 21:29
I'm currently building all of my suits, it's such a pain cleaning resin but I hope to have them all built (all 14 of them) by the time dad gets back from europe with our good camera so I can do a photoshoot

02-12-2007, 09:30
built so far

4 broadsides

1 shas'o bodyguard

2 crisis suits

28 seaguard

3 plastic white lions (look awesome)

04-12-2007, 10:01
Finally! some photos, or rather one big one. Behold!

(right click, hit view image and then you can magnify it)

lots of stuff there. Note the awesome little thing I came up with for the advanced stabilisation system on the broadsides, I took the pics quickly so they're pretty bodgy, but you can see they're kinda quadrupedal and when they brace to fire they shift into almost turretlike sort of stances. The tau infantry are the work in progresses of an observer team

06-12-2007, 00:55
almost done. Built all the drones (8 guns, six shields, 3 markers) and am about 75% of the way through building the stealth suits and the sniper firefly suits. Also have built all the crisis/broadside suits apart from my commander, who's cleaned up, brushed down and awaiting assembly. I've also dug out some wood elves to get re-aquainted with my brushes on. Should take me a couple of weeks to get them all done while I work greenstuff onto my tau, then I can get started painting them

06-12-2007, 01:12
Cant wait to see how those tau paint up. I'm running a similar list once my box's arrive. I still need to pick up some broadsides though, might just convert them. I like that stabalizer idea though, might have to knick it from you. The goblins look dope, any plans with all the dwarfs? I might be interested in them if your willing to work something out. PM me.

06-12-2007, 04:15
a lucky lad by the name of harry has already picked them up, swapped them for a rulebook :)

06-12-2007, 18:41
finished assembling all the tau, bar my fire warrior teams and have based them all as well, I've started work on the woodelves, doing some horses for my glade riders.

Those Night Goblins.... You my friend, have a thing called Patience.:p

10-12-2007, 05:52
ok, some better photos have been done! Still not brilliant, but the best I can manage for now. It's tau this time as well!

First up, the whole army (minus fire warrior observers) done and based, though they haven't been greenstuffed yet:

10-12-2007, 05:54
Next up, some closeups of suits:

10-12-2007, 05:58
and finally, the smaller suits, XV22 stealth and XV101 firefly class battle suits.

18-12-2007, 06:03
sadly not much progress of late, been chipping away at the wood elves. I figured the army shots might have garnered some attention, but oh well. Should be back on track in a day or two

21-12-2007, 18:36
I haven't looked here for too long a time. Those Tau are fantastic, very dynamic, and very striking poses. Excellent conversions, can't wait to see some painted.

27-12-2007, 00:49
nother little update, about half done on the wood elves, so far I've finished

1 spellsinger

8 dryads

5 glade riders

10 glade guard

In progress are a batch of 20 glade guard, and to do are 6 wardancers, 3 warhawks and a noble

27-12-2007, 06:32

when do you eat?

Nice army, seriously spectacular. All you have to do now is start gaming!

29-12-2007, 09:47
intend to do that shortly, my gobbos are lining up for their second tournament near the end of january, hopefully I can do a bit better this time :P

20-01-2008, 09:12
Further progress report, though no pictures again. Had a lot of paid work over jan as well as having to work on my comic and graphic design, so painting time has been in fairly short supply, however I have managed to continue my wood elves and keep working on my tau. This is how things stand

-all the tau are now fully assembled, cleaned and, more importantly, greenstuffed, meaning they are ready for spray and then paint. all set to go then :D

- since I can increase the WE army size to 2000 points with a single box of horsemen, a blister of wardancers and a treeman, I've decided to do so, which leaves me with this roster

-treeman ancient

-alter noble (in progress)

-bsb noble (in progress)

-spellsinger (done)

3x ten archers (done)

8 dryads (done)

7 glade riders (5 done)

7 wild riders

8 wardancers (6 almost done)

3 warhawk riders.

I'll finish what I have then start on the tau, and do a wood elf here and there as a break so I'll get them done at the same time as my tau.

20-01-2008, 11:58
All this and a wish list for nurgle?
I suspect you need to get out more, seeing that gobbo army, but great stuff!

03-02-2008, 07:10
Pictures for the first time in a while!

This time of the wood elves, who are almost done. I still have to base them all, and finish work on the characters and warhawks.

minor update- tau are all sprayed and ready to be painted!

Woot!:D Can't wait.

12-02-2008, 22:45
down in melbourne, almost set up and will be starting painting the tau shortly

27-04-2008, 10:52
Ok, so I got delayed a little. I've been working six hours a day on my comic, building a game or two in the background, working a full time uni schedule and generally been up to my neck in it. However, I finally have a painting table set up so progress should begin soon, it'll be slower than the gobbos, but I'm aiming for far higher quality anyhow. I apologize for the delay, I haven't been paying the hobby due diligence and will atempt to make up for my slackness.

for now though, dark deeds awaken, death stirs in the north. It is a time of storms and terror. Come my brothers! raise the pack! CRY HAVOC AND RELEASE THE HOUNDS OF KHORNE! :p

well, I did say I got my enthusiasm back...

24-12-2008, 04:03
It's been a while. A long while. Games have been made and broken, tournaments won and lost and generaly all sorts of epic has been prosecuted in my abscence.

But I return, once more, and things shall never be the same again. This time for real, I hope. I'm now assisting on the new cathay list in development here on warseer and I also really hope I can get some warhammer painted and played over the next few months. WoW is gonna take a backseat from now on :P

Woo! Welcome back!:p Been a while, should probably change the plogs name:p.

24-12-2008, 20:39
Bloody hell TINS, you consistently pump out high quality models. Good to have you back!

30-12-2008, 11:50
update: suits washed and paint beginning to be applied. Should have good progress and pics by the end of the week

02-01-2009, 10:49
yet another update: Good progess being made, I lucked out and figured how to do a camo pattern really easy, details in next update. So far I've done about 80% of the bodywork, markings and most of the glows and lenses, still need to add detailed markings, possibly some basic highlights and then wear, tear and bases. I'd say the suits will be complete by monday, wednsday at the latest.

That leaves me with only the stealth and firefly suits to complete of the models I have built so far, once they're done, all I need do is core choices. Given the updated rules, I really need to bulk those out, so to that end I'll be grabbing a couple of boxes of kroot and another one of fire warriors so I can make three units of 10 kroot and three units of 6 fire warriors.

06-01-2009, 12:05
first terrible photos:

Obligatory workspace pic

the army as it stands now, still certainly WiP but all the basic work is done

11-01-2009, 21:51
update: pretty much finished all the suits and conversions. My kroot and fire warriors arrived, so they've all be assembled, based and spraysed+ airbrushed. This airbrush is a killer :) I have to now paint 30 kroot and 21 fire warriors, hopefully by the end of the week

12-01-2009, 08:29
Carefull with pics of such a size that they cause scrollbars... But great models! Even though I'm not a 40K player, Tau is always one of my favourites.

14-02-2009, 21:36
update: I'm really getting annoyed about not having a camera, so I can't really get any good shots, however, big progress since last time

Tau army is done

10 crisis suits
4 broadside suits
3 shadowsun-pattern stealthsuits
8 shield drones
6 gun drones
6 converted sniper suits (sniper drones)
2 converted drone spotters (spotters)
21 fire warriors
32 kroot warriors

Painted based, tested out in game (creamed some marines alongside a DE player)

Eldar army is underway:

32 jetbikes: assembled, sprayed and airbrush basecoated
6 vyper chassis' (squad leaders and characters): assembled, sprayed and basecoated
12 guardian crew: assembled, sprayed and airbrushed
5 shining spear crew: assembled, sprayed and airbrushed

Lizardmen army is in initial stages
most of the army is still en-route. I have one box of skinks that are being used for colour tests. I've settled on a bright yellow, with bone and stone secondary colours and ice blue/scab red/scorpion green as tertiaries.
