View Full Version : Destris' Elysian Log
Hi all,
This is the beginning a a long term slow project log about my new FW Elysian army. First of all, a quick list of thank you's for helping me with various models, rules, inspiration and generally how to work with resin:
Hulkster,
Gitburna,
Wintermute,
Gobboslayer,
Schoolcomorant and Insane Psychopath for making me get this started,
And of course the man himself: Deadleyheadley for various, pictures, bases, hints, tips and inspiration.
Anyway, I now currently have:
2 Valkyrie w/ Door Gunners
1 Set of Rocket Pods
2 Troop Squads
Melta Squad
Heavy Bolter Squad
Command HQ Squad
2 Cyclops
Drop Sentinel
Special Weapons Squad
Hardened Vets Squad.
So far I have built the SW squad, Command HQ Squad, the DS and a Cyclops. I'm currently working on the first Valkyrie.
Anyways, onto the pics:
Sentinel:

On with the comments! BTW, I am pretty slow at this sort of thing, so don't expect the sort of constant updates Deadley comes up with.

nice work so far mate, excellent that you've built so much, glad you've got it off the ground (rubbish valk pun).
you've done an excellent job cleaning up the parts and i bet magnetizing each guy is taking it's time.
any colour shemes sorted yet?
SC
Thanks for the comment SC :). The colour scheme is going to be Desert yellow fatigues with Grey armour (the taros scheme). I'm also trying it with Vallejo's, this will be my first try with Vallejo paints so I'll see how it goes :).

The Elysians aren't too bad, you just need to wait a while for the superglue to take hold, and the shoulderpads are really nasty. The Valkyrie however. Nothing fits. Seriously. Most of it isn't too bad, but the two main fulelage halves seem to be from completely diffirent sized models, and required a lot of bending as GSing when the were stuck together. Behind the nose at the front of the fuselage was nasty, one bit stuck out quite a way further than the other, and required a lot of filling behind it. Also, the bits on the bottom of the fulelage that go onto the nose were set to be a nightmare, but when I got them glued together they weren't actually so bad, just required a bit of GS.
Thanks for the comments, keep them coming!

Hi again all,
Last night I got the 2 Fuselage landing skids on, and the sensor array on the front of the Valkyrie. Plan for today is to get the 2 big poles all cleaned up and glued on, which means I will also have to put the tail fin on. I'm going to start on painting the pilots sometime soon as well :).
Pics ASAP.

Dave
About a quarter of what Deadley has :p. There's a list of what I've got in the first post. If you want to start Elysians, go for it, but I will warn you they are a hell of a lot of effort and break ridiculously easily. Then there is the washing, and the goddamn fitting of the Valkyrie. /rant.
If you want infantry, you'll get infantry. I'll do a 10 man squad when I've finished building the Valk.
I still think they are worth it though :D. The resin detail blows your mind (apart from on the Valk, when it blows your patience :p). Keep the comments coming guys!
Steve
EDIT: I have £430 of Elysians I think. I didn't pay for the Valk I'm doing, the Door Gunners for it, the rocket pods or the second Cyclops, got them in an excellent trade :). (You know who you are...)

I've just finished sticking the 2 big poles onto the Valk, they're drying at the moment and covered in elastic bands :).

Your next purchase should be a lascutter squad just for the fact that this (new) special weapon is too interesting to pass up. Well, I wish at least that Forge World could do lascutters for other Imperial Guard armies, spare or arm-mounted.
Anyway: looking good!

Thanks for the comment mate :). Where are the rules for the lascutters? I have both the IA3 and IA4 Elysian rules, and I remember seeing them, but I can't remember where :p. Thanks for the comment. Yeah FW is expensive but I think it is totally worth it :). Colour scheme will be Desert Yellow fatigues and Grey armour. I'm going to try it with Vallejo's, but it's my first try at using them :skull:.
I've just finished getting the main engines and the piece in the middle of the roof on the Valkyrie, damn things wouldn't fit. There wasn't enough space on the roof for them all, lots off filing required. Pics ASAP.

You might want to have a look out for old plastic guardsmen from the rogue trader era , they look quite similar to the elysians, they might be usable in some form or other.

Hi mate, thanks for the comment :).
Building the Valkyrie is not easy. A lot of dremmeling, filling and filing is needed. Compared to standard GW models I would give it a 9 or 10, and compared to other FW models about a 6-7. Updates will be tonight or tommorow mate, I've just magnetised the lascannon on the Valk :).

Are you allowed to post rules for stuff? If yes, I'll dig them out for you :).
IIRC they are strength 10 assault only weapons that replace a guy's normal attack with a single strength 10 attack.

Thanks for the help and good luck! :)
You're allowed to post rules of a single weapon as one are allowed to discuss background, rules etc.
I wasn't entirely sure about the rules, though I understood they was something about that. Thanks; I might be able to use them in a game, and later on convert a small squad (if Forge World does not release spare ones) with them.
Voronwe
Thanks mate :). Just checked, those rules I gave are right :). I can tell you FW do have plans to release Cadian lascutters, but they keep getting pushed further and further back with the AM and Knight (yup ;)) and Reaver titans and whatnot.
Thanks again for the comment :).

the lascutter is a bonus item for elysian d99, it only works against immobile or static vehicles/buildings..... but id be tempted to use them as meltagun stand ins. destris can i ask you where you order your vallejo from? last 2 places i used have become very unreliable (oracle games=nightmare, and dwhs didnt bother sending and when i complained told me they didnt stock them anymore? cheers for email or refund?)

I order mine from here. (http://www.modelsinmotion.com) Just click on paints and tools, and Vallejo. I also got my Vallejo air paints from there. Great guys, excellent delivery times (ordered in the morning and they came the next day!) good prices and generally a great bunch of guys to deal with. I've got a lot of stuff from there now, including my airbrush. They must also have decent stock levels, I've always had everything I ordered in the package with no backorders :). BTW, I have absolutely no connection to them, honest :).

Quick question for you all:
Do you think DKoK Grenadiers would look good as stormtroopers? I really want some, but my wife says one army only, so I need to pass them off somehow..
Comments please :).

Yes, they would look good (and you've a smart wife - one FW, or perhaps any, army only), though you would have to add gravchutes. The different uniforms might be for historical reasons. What do I know?
Wait a minute. Did you say that the Skitarii - [trap arm smashes down] Ouch! My neck! Hell and well, now I'm well and truly trapped!

or use kasrkin and put grav chutes on, i think they fit (cheaper too ;))

Is there any particular reason you don't think the DK would work?

well, you'd have to not put the backpacks on, but i think that you'd need to do something with the terminus of the cables which usually end behind the bakcpack. the grav chutes are a little higher.
when i say i don't like the idea i wouldn't have a go or anything. it's just not the way i'd go about it. only my opinion so go with what you like :)

The backpacks come moulded onto the grenadiers. The thing one of the FW designers was having a crack at when i was there was dremelling off the middle of the top bit of the backpack, and the Chutes fitted surprisingly well in there. IIRC the cables plug into the bit of backpack that was still there, so shouldn't be a problem. I dunno, I might have a crak at it when I go down to WHW.
BTW SC, I do value your opinon, that's why I asked :).

I would say go with regular troops, then put on the resperator heads and leave on there jump packs then model some hoses instead of a magazine and some kind of scope or targeter.
Sry, man but I dont think the dkok models will work in your army, the just dont look right, even with the grave shoot.
Great stuff so far though.
Another thing to make the storm troops stand out more is to paint the shoulders with a diffrent marking or somthing.

The coat is wrapped/buttoned around the leg, look at the WW2 german para smock dependent on what photoes you see it looks either like a short legged rompa suit or a camouflage patterned dress. so as a concept its not unreasonable.
Yep! bottom one for sure.
Right then guys, thanks for the comments. I've now decided I'm going to have 2 units of DKoK Grenadier/Stormtroopers. The first is going to have the DKoK heads (costcutting ;)) and then the second is going to have to Elysian heads, so I can differentiate between the units. I could even mix them together a bit :). Anyways, I've now had old guard and Gen. Steiner say it is not totally unreasonable fluffwise, so that's good enough for me :).
PS: Only problem with using the Elysian heads is that this is going to be one hell of an expensive unit. If anyone has any spare Elysian respirator heads, even just a couple, please can I buy or trade them off you :D. Thanks all.
Small Non-Picture Update:

The Valkyrie was some work. Nothing fitted, and a lot off filing and GS filling was required, but I think the result is easily worth it. One tip is to use Araldite. I think you should take some time to practise with your camera. It's ok for now because nothing is painted, but it would be a shame if you have some finished units and you're unable to make out anything.
Look at mine Detris, I'm not even using a camera, thats my Nokia N73 fone. Try to use natural sunlight and check the settings on the camera, either be called Macro or close-up.
The ones right, shame not to see the finished product at its best!

Honest crit?
The armour and decals are great, but the face... ooh you better work on it. My advise would be a light watered down brown ink, just enough to get some shadow work on it, then highlight certain areas (or possibly large parts of the face depending how think your inkwork is)
but like i say, loving the base and armour

Hi Destris
Good to see you been busy with this log :D told you it be good idea  lol
What I seen so far been pretty cool, from the Green Stuff Ultramarine captain, to the painted limited Ed one. Take it your going for a Ultramarine army as well (sorry if you already said) if so what plans do you have for this force.
Also good to see the Death Korps came in. If you built any, how do you find them compaired to Elysian models on the building front. Just I never really built much Forge World stuff myself apart from the odd add on to Speeder, Dread or the Cadain upgread packs.
Look forward to seeing more models.

***Grenadier Grav Chute Tutorial***
Right, first of all. Apologies for the dark pictures. My camera didn't want to work. Anyone that is any good with PS, feel free to lighten them up a bit and I'll edit them in.
Anyways...
Here is the Grenadier model I will be using:
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o80/Destris/DSCF0180.jpg
***Stage 1***
First of all, cut through the breathing pipe at the side of the top backpack, to seperate the pipe from the backpack:
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o80/Destris/DSCF0183.jpg
***Stage 2***
Next, clip the top backpack off the model. Don't file down what's left:
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o80/Destris/DSCF0185.jpg
***Stage 3***
Attach the Grav Chute in the gap. It should just sit nicely. Also, glue the pipe onto the side of the Grav Chute. If there is a small gap, stick a bit of resin or some GS in: (In this case it's fine)
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o80/Destris/DSCF0186.jpg
***CONTINUED***
***Stage 4***
Finish the model with arms and whatnot (damn cable), and voila! A Drop Troop Stormtrooper!
