I'm about to start making a 'nid fleet, and I wanted to hear what people had to say about effective tactics and ship.

To start off with, when building Vanguard Drones, Drones, and Krakens, what tend to be the effective configurations?

Pyro-Acid Kraken: Brutal weapons batteries. More than a few of these and your battery strength falls off the charts. Make the commanders of Sword frigates cry.

Claw Kraken: Probably the easiest delivery system for massive claws.

Tentacle Kraken: see Tentacle Vanguard.

Torpedo Kraken: Torpedo salvo is quite small considering you can get a pyro-acid kraken for the same price. Including one or two in a larger squadron can be helpful for fending off enemy attack craft as well as making sure you never slip past #6 on the Instinctive Behavior table.

Pyro-Acid Vanguard: Unless you have some extraordinary reason for needing a Vanguard, the pyro-acid kraken is probably a better deal.

Tentacle Vanguard: My favorite escort. Moving a squadron of these guys over an enemy vessel will reduce even the mightiest battleship to a helpless floating log. Being able to force a BFI on enemy escorts just by touching them is nice too. Squishy screaming humans are nummy.

Pyro-Acid Escort: I personally prefer pyro-acid kraken. While the escort will give you more battery-per-point, the kraken's are already terrifyingly powerful, and the kraken's extra speed & maneuverability make it easier to find good targets.

Tentacle Escort: Bleh. Not fast enough or maneuverable enough to make contact with most enemies. Not a good deal, especially since for the same price you can get...

Bio-Plasma Escort: Strength 2 shield-ignoring lances for 15 pts. Sure, they're slow, but in my games at least they've always gotten some shots off toward the end of the game.
And really, for 15 points, a little sluggishness is forgivable.

I would assume another advantage of the tentacle vanguard is whatever squadron they're getting touchy-feely with will then also be highlighted for your gunnery ships to open up on, correct?

Thanks for the advice RaDavide. I thought it would be apropos to post here the work I've done so far.

What you're looking at is 6 Tyranid Vanguard Drones with Feeder Tendrils, 8 Escort Drones with Bio Plasma spines (defense for two hive ships), and (so far) one Kraken with Pyro-Acid Battery. They're going to require extensive greenstuffing to cover up the gaps and clean up the joinings, which I'm not looking forward to. If you can identify the parts used (especially as the picture turned out smaller than I intended) then you've got a hell of an eye.

D00D! This is exactly the kind of post I was hunting for :)

I'm building up a Niddy fleet presently, as well. I've got about 800 points of Vanguard Escorts built already, and a few more on the way, and also about 1K worth of Krackens I'm going to start building today.
