Hello everybody!

Im helping out my buddies with building terrain for their new game store, Battleforge games in Austin, TX

they are all pretty skilled at building, so ask quesitons and I will try to get them to answer. I will post pics here, but they are super huge so I will link to my photobucket account

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v435/takitron/battleforge/

This is where I will be uploading all sorts of pics, hopefully I will also put them in subfolders :)

Here is The Prancing Pony, a Tavern for Fantasy modeled by Nick (I think he is OCD, he made every one of those shingles... ) Its still a WIP, he is adding a horse to the front sign, then painting it. He is a better painter than a modeler...

That tower!!!

How much cutting and filing would you need to do for all those individual blocks, Kudos on the effort

Takitron
15-02-2007, 21:49
those hand cut blocks are a pain! we just sit around with foam, cut piles of rough blocks then hand sand them to smooth edges.... it takes quite a while.

Ive got more pics comming soon, the tower is finnished, now on to texturing!

Very very nice buildings, and the tower is nice too, but I would suggest some kind of a "mortar" inbetween the blocks, o and on the green table you should put some fock or static grass on there to break up the flat green or at least some dirt patches.
other than that this is really nice, wish I had the room for more than two tables:cries: or a store close for that matter.

Keep it coming man!

we were debating the static grass part, but it would be destroyed in a matter of months. the terrain peices are there to break up the flat green ;)

As for the tower, I think he is going to use glue and sand as mortar in the bricks. he has currently moved on to making a well out of popsicle sticks.

north-ish austin. Its in the Village shopping center, across from Northcross mall. It is located right across from the Alamo Drafthouse Village Cinema (http://www.originalalamo.com/village/frames.asp) (wich is the best theater EVAR)

we are planning a couple more tables, and maybe (** VERY MAYBE **) selling some terrain pieces on the website.

Hey, just been reading through the thread and I like the terrain! Could you give me some advice however?

How did you get that grainy texture on the stones in the tower? (Tall cylindrical tower with ramparts) as I plan to use that technique on my Up-coming lizardmen Fortress :P

How did you get that grainy texture on the stones in the tower? (Tall cylindrical tower with ramparts) as I plan to use that technique on my Up-coming lizardmen Fortress :P

thanks for the question, thats an easy one to answer ;)

The technique is using watered down PVA glue (we got a jug of wood glue), a crappy $1 paint brush, and a giant bag of sand.

Paint the whole outside of the tower and the base with the thinned PVA glue then, in a box, sprinkle the outside with sand. get it all over and in every nook and cranny. let the excess sand fall off back into the box then let sit. we let it sit for 24 hours, but I bet you could wait half that.

doing this to all our terrain peices gives them added strength in addition to some cool texture.

Edit: I will be happy to take pics of the whole process today and make a sister thread on how we do what we do.

Goq Gar
19-02-2007, 16:14
Dont worry :P I just wanted to know the general process, that'll work fine :D

However, should you dye the sand a certain color? Or should you just paint over it? I was thinking darker-turquoise :D

Takitron
19-02-2007, 16:19
after we put the sand on, we use black flat latex paint in a gallon paint can. paint it on and let dry. that way its one solid black colour with texture. after that, you can do whatever you want to it.

We will be happy to! as Ive found out, simplicity goes a long way. all of the terrain we are working on has 3 colours, thats it. base coat, drybrush drybrush. then pick out some details to make it look less like a drybrushed monstrosity :)

Goq Gar

I guess the pics dont to the green board justice, its looks great with the layers of green we have on there. We are not going to add flock or static grass because these boards will be played on every single day. sure, the static grass might look great but after a month of play from anyone and everyone willing to come in, it will start to look ratty. I will post some pics of armies on the boards with finnished terrain, and we can truely see how it looks in play :)

Malchek ;)

I'll be happy to sir. The tech we used for that board is the same we used for almost everything we make. It starts with a base of that blue foamboard you can get at home building stores. On that we paint a mix of water and PVA glue on it. You want to PVA glue to be like thick milk, even cream (but not double creme :) ). make sure you get a good even coat, doesnt have to be flat, just coat the whole thing. after you do that, take a bunch of sand and sprinkle it over the whole board. just pour it on and move around, then pour it off (best to do this outside).

Let this dry over night to 24 hours. we then painted on black flat latex paint as a primer. after this, we painted the board with blue paint.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/takitron/battleforge/DSC00221.jpg

thats the colour we used. After that dries really well, you dry brush a lighter blue colour on the whole thing. dont be shy, this should be a heavy dry brush. Let THAT dry then come back over it with even a lighter blue, almost white paint. this should be a light drybrush, just getting the tops of the sand on the board.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/takitron/battleforge/terrain/DSC00437.jpg

here you can see the brush strokes. its a very simple technique that works very well.

always happy to give something back to the game! we are going to work on a 6x8 table for a display in the front window. Its going to be a coastal assault board....

I will be covering how we make the ALL IMPORTANT frame that no one has picked up on. I have a photo of it in the background of this Photo

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/takitron/battleforge/DSC00230.jpg

This frame is important to keeping the boards intact while moving and in storage. I think I will spin off that into another thread

Edit: Also one of us (me, evilamericorps, minus67, or abe) will post the list of terrain for each board. I think it was something like 2 small hills, 2 large hills, 2 forrests, a water feature, stone fixture, then some major terrain peice (like the pony, or the eldar webways and the broken down altar)

Nick has a GREAT plan for the Green Board and the Prancing Pony. He is currently writing up a senario called the 4 inns. Its like the Giant Battle Senario with Innkeepers, catapults, and what not sounds really clever! we also brainstormed another Squig racing board (thats right, I said another squig racing board.)

dont you wish your game store was this cool? :chrome: (sorry, had to boast a little :) the store's motto is "By Gamers, For Gamers" )

Abe is working on a Khorn Tower / Monument. It has very sharp edges and angles, and I think the plan is to paint it bronze. either gold-bronze or dark bronze like the horse on the Prancing Pony. I said it should be red and coppery with petina on it. I like the way that looks :)

Hmmm, it seems as though you could have made the core of those walls solid foamboard and then covered it in the bricks. Wouldn't that have saved a lot of time for no real difference in final product? Just a thought for the rest of it...

I went by the shop yesterday and helped run cable through the drop ceiling. I'll tell you what, thats not fun. The only progress on terrain was Micha painted the extra hills green. thats it as far as I can tell...

We are planning on having everything done by sunday so we can move on to more pressing issues. Like setting up product :)

Crusader

yes, Crusader is correct. all this labour is a labour of love. They'll provide a meal for us 99% of the time, but we do it because we want a great store to play in. we are all friends in one way or another (example, Crusader is twice removed from me in our giant gamer circle of friends) We all know how awesome it is to have cool terrain, how awesome it is to take part in something that will be great, and how much a store like this with the proper leadership and support will do wonders for gaming in Central Texas (and hopefully via these blogs, we can help people in the community around the world)

We want this store to be a place where people want to come to, they want to buy the products from here and they want to play here. There are other stores really close to Battleforge, but none have the years of experience in ALL gaming nor have the welcoming close knit community of gamers that we do. I say we even though I'm not getting paid by the store at all, Im just taking anytime I can from my wife and my real 45-55 hr/week job to put my fingerprints on something that will make other people happy.

The three Owners of the store have a combined 25+ years experience in warhammer, add me into the mix, and you get about 30-40 years of RPG gaming involved as well. We are all RABID GAMERS, but some of us are also smart enough to run a shop (like minus67). We will have one Warhammer 40K and one WHFB tournament every 2 weeks (bi-weekly), Magic the gathering events weekly, warmachine events, maybe even BFG events as well! If you want to play it, I bet someone here has an army :) (lets not forget bloodbowl! I want to make a stadium and have a "Forged on the Pitch" tourney with a real cup!)

Im somewhat of a documentarian *not a real word* (I take my crappy camera everywhere and take lots of pics :) ) so I'll be trying my best to take BatReps, Tourney reports, painting days, Terrain building... I even want to make a lightbox that we can store there so people who want to take pics of their models but dont have the access to a camera or knowhow can set it up and get their own little gallery going...

Oh, Ive got plans for many many more Blogs on this site ;)

always happy to give something back to the game! we are going to work on a 6x8 table for a display in the front window. Its going to be a coastal assault board....

I will be covering how we make the ALL IMPORTANT frame that no one has picked up on. I have a photo of it in the background of this Photo

This frame is important to keeping the boards intact while moving and in storage. I think I will spin off that into another thread

The frames are pretty easy to make. You must remember that weight and strength are a balance. I use a hard board (peg board without the holes) to make the base and simple white pine for the frame. The basic frame is a standard rectangle with three struts spaced evenly though the rectangle. We used screws for the fasteners here, they are they best for strength. Also do not forget to pre-drill the holes, white pine is really fragile. The hard board is then nailed (use finishing nails) down to the frame creating a very stable platform. Next you put the foam in place ( I recomment using a liquid nails glue that is made for foam, do not use normal liquid nails as it eats the foam), then you attach the edging, we did this with screws, just remember if your screws are too long they will split the pine. The edging was simple 1x2 boards, the standard frame boards are 1x3. The real trick here is to paint it black and it will look HOT when you are done. It is all about the finishing details.

There is are some minor details I left out but that is the main idea. I can go into greater detail if you like.

Oh, I am the guy (John) who came up with the design for the boards frames at the shop. The original design was modified from the GW one they have on their site. The use plywood and do not reinforce it as much, but the ply wood makes it very strong and very heavy. GW did not put edging in there designs for some reason....

and Nick the Prancing Pony is HAWT!

Angel is correct, it is the LOTR statue but I used an eldar sword (with the design filed off the blade) and the wings off a warhawk. The hardest part of making this piece was not scarring up the hood on the robes as I cut the face out. The wings are pinned and greenstuffed in as well. When it is mounted it will also be pinned at the base as it is WAY top heavy.

Props to Abe for suggesting the Eldar sword. I thought he was crazy but with a little work it was perfect.

I like the boards and the terran. But out of all I have read in this thread I like the most is that you and your friends are luck enough to come together and work on such a cool set of board at what looks like to be a great store. I must say I am just a little jealous, I have some great friend to play with but because of all our busy lifes, we have little time and limited recources to put together a set of tables like those! You are so lucky!

As far as the Grand Opening on the weekend of the 9th in concerned what we have secdualed is this
9th : 40k 500 point free for all, prizes to be given as we feel like it.
10th: WFB, 2250 points, no entry fee, at least $200 in prizes to be split by like the top 3ish.
11th: 40k, 2000 points not entry fee, at least $200 in prizes to be split by like the top 3ish.

Door prizes and other events to be going on, we should also be giving away t-shirts and stuff, as well as open gaming.

For more information and updates (we may switch the WFB and 40K days) see the website.
