How big are BFG ships in real world terms (like KM)?

A friend of ine is trying to use ships like the ones in BFG in his star wars RPG game, but to convert them he needs there size and worth ideas how many guns they have

any idea where I could find all that information?

thanks in advance

I remember reading somewhere that a cruiser could have a crew of up to 2 million. So I think we're talking insanely hugely enormous. I like to picture them being about 10 french miles in length, probably more. But the models themselves are not at a correct scale so I figure your friend could theoretically make them any size he wants to.

Most average estimates on the sizes of ships are as follows:

Imperial Cobra Destroyer- 1.5 km ish long
Imperial Cruisers between 3 and 5 km long
Imperial Battleships around 7- 7.5 km long

Here is a decent reference:

In any case when one gathers the cumulative information from the books, the game background and a few other sources it generally describes ships that range from a kilometer or so in length to "Battleships that are the size of cities".

I always thought that the Imperial battleships were like 20 - 25 km long not 7.5km

there is supposed to be 1000s of people on cruisers

remember two things though- The Imperials dont do things effeciently- they require more crewmen to operate everything- that being said- these ships are miles long and pretty damn wide and tall too- now after having a psychology class of 500 other students (on exam days at least) in an average auditorium room so I am thoroughly convinced that thousands could fit in and be required to operate a 3-5 mile hull.

The large US Navy carriers have a crew numbering in the thousands, and they are a fraction of the size of a BFG ship.

Where did that data come from? I recall imperial cruisers being about 13 km long.

IIRC it is stated in the Bl novel that a Dictator class cruiser is 3,5 km long.So my gues is that a battleship woudl be 5 km long.

Imperial cruisers are around the three mile length, from the writings of Gordon Rennie. BL is canon, so I'd say it counts.

btw, the pic of the Cobra against all of those B5 ships is hilarious. It's huuuge!

If a cobra were as big as the Andromeda, it could hold as many troops as a heavy transport and launch as many fighters as a dictator.

but then that's the scale of different universes. And the Andromeda could operate with a crew of like 5.

It is hard to come up with exact ship sizes, because usually there are no definite measurements, sometimes it is easier to come up with your own sizes. The only printed ship size I have ever seen was on page 13 of Gothic Invasion which stated that a battleship could be up to 8 kilometers long.

I like to use this myself for determining the size and crew of a BFG ship, 3cm on a ship is ~1 kilometer and 1 hitpoint accounts for ~2500 crew.

BL is authorised fanart, not canon. I still remember BFG source saying it was 13k, not 3, but can't put my finger on it...

Cobra's 500-700 metre
Cruisers 5km - 7km

Most accepted 'bigness' measures on the SG site.

We have been there if you had read the thread you would have seen that link.

Thanks anyway.

Bah, how sad is it that in specialist games forums a full thread page is considered too long to read through? [Not a jab at fracas, just saying]

Hopefully Overwatch will drive people mad for specialist games and give them the support they deserve. [/dream]

As far as comparing them to star wars ships:

40K ships will be far more tough and able to deal with hull breaches and critical hits.

They will be much less maneuverable.

They will not be able to escape if the star wars ships are winning in a planetary battle. This is because you need to go into the warp further out than hyperspace.

They have powerful but inaccurate weapons.

The 40K fighters will be outclassed, but more durable.

"The 40K fighters will be outclassed, but more durable."

Well it really depends on who we're talking about fighting. If you're fighting Orky fightas Im inclined to agree with the assessment. If a squadron SW fighters came up against a squadron of 40k Eldar or Dark Eldar fighters of equivelant numbers, by pretty much all counts the SW pilots would get wiped out.
