Can you give Power Swords to Leaders straight away?

Just wondering, since I was thinking of giving my Gang Leader a Power Sword (Family Heirloom) or giving hima Chainsword and giving him the power sword after a couple of battles.
I have give some thought to the gangs background as well to explain the power sword.

Under the official rules you cannot give rare items to your leader to start with no. They can only be gotten by visiting the trading post (if your leader didn't get injured) after each game.

You can however give him a chainsword (depending on if you're using house weapon lists or not).
