View Full Version : Syrme's project log -
Hi,
I don't post a lot on these forums but the project logs are really fantastic and I thought if i put everything together on one log it would inspire me to get things painted more quickly.
At the moment im finishing off my wood elf army - here is a pic of a glade guard champion or maybe waywatcher I finished last week,
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v67/emrys/IMG_1161.jpg
Next on the list is a Death Korps army and some ork figtha's and bombas for I.A.
Here is my test Death Korp guy i did just before christmas -

The wood elf is great and captures their image perfectly whereas the Death Korps infantryman looks very cool and the ghoul's skin and blood colours are the ones you must use.

Wow great work so far Syrme. Those two WE miniatures look superb. The bases look great too.
Nice work on that DKoK chap. I like the Blue/Grey tone to his uniform.
Good work on that Ghoul, the flesh tone looks awesome. The blood on his arm and the severed leg looks very realistic. Look forward too seeing some more updates.

That wood elf shot is beautiful. Looking forward to more updates.
Syreme,
if you buy the new GW woods scenery piece make sure to paint it in the same way as those elfes. Those are stunning as is the just out of a trench Death Korp Guard. I personally would like a closeup of that ghoul,as that is the mini that interests me most (having Vampire Counts).

Rust - Ive never been 100% convinced with my attempts at painting rust - As my next army will have a lot of it Ive been doing a little practise - Below are some pics of some rusted ogre bits and some dried in blood on the edges/points.
Please let me know what you think both positive or negative - Have I gone OTT - I really want to get it looking the best I can so im open to any suggestions
- I know there some tide makes especially on sword i used a hair dryer to try and speed up the drying process  wont happen next time around!

looks good but you might find a little more orange might help, or more dark brown, because your rust just looks like shading kinda
ok second attempt at rust getting a little better...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v67/emrys/IMG_1279-1.jpg
Really nice rust, the spotted look on the top of his helmet is top-notch! (pun intended)
havent been too idle - i have had bad neck shoulder injury so last two weeks no painting but i have assembled the guts (probably 1250 points worth) of the kreig army - going to paint it now!

Damn I'm jealous of you.
I wish I had the patience to build up a Krieg army the sice of yours.
I stopped at half a squad and a heavy bolter team.
There were too much moulding faults, so I lost my patience since Forgeworld didn't answer my E-mails requesting replacement parts.
I hope to see some of these troopers painted soon :)
Cheers.
long time no post had a bit of a back problem
well my first ever 40k tank -its the centaur tractor thing from the Death Korps range - going to start painting the crew next.
Ive gone for a battleworn look to fit in with my ww1 theme

Cool! Good job! Are you using MIG pigments for that weathering because that looks ace(your weathering, not MIG in this particular sentence...)
cheers, keep up the good work!
Great work, and the paint scheme really works. Is that a Mars pattern hull I see there?
Wow everyrthing is just wow. Lovely colour choices and execution. Lovely models and lovely bases. Andlast but niot least lovely foto skills. Keep em coming man. I rwally like your tanka nd I'm normally someone who doesn't like tanks. I might also "steal" your woodelf colour cheme. It is neither too autumn nor too grenn if you understand what I mean. What are "mig pigments" and where do you find them? Your tank effects look absolutely amazing. Did you do any highlight painting or is that what that pigment stuff does? Would you be able to do a tuturial on how you got those to their final state? I have many tanks to paint but I really want them to look as good as these.
Over a black undercoat i spray painted it tamiya german grey (an airbrush would be even better) So i got a nice even basecoat really quickly. I had a pot of german grey so mixed in a little white and gave it a very light drybrush.
The glass lens was my first attempt at wet blending of a sort - Basecoat most of the lens with the foundation red (except for where I put in the two white dots. When that was dry i tried out the new p3 reds used skorne red blending in khador red and then khador red highlight (fiery orange) and that was it really havent even put the gloss varnish on yet.

The mud is european dust mixed with water, static grass and Valejo plastic putty and just stippled on.
The rust is water + the various (3 shades) of rust in their range.
I then gave most of the panels a dusting (straight pigment) to blend everything together. Then i used boltgun metal in places to show the scratches on the paint work.
I was really experimenting as i went along - trying out different pigments - i was especially pleased with how the mud came out - and as i mentioned it took 2 hours almost half the time it takes me to do 1 standard 28mm figure!
This is a test ork fighta i did for Aeronautica Imperialis last night.
Was trying for a cobbled together rust bucket look
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks for the mig pigment instructions. I do have another question about them though. They seem like they are just "dusty" effects. Does that mean they will "blow" or rub off in time? Can you seal them in with a matt spray or anything or would that ruin them?
Do you use these are troops too?
@northernmike - The pigments when mixed with water or alochol are fine (if you rub hard enough it might come off but ok for general play - the dusting (that is using the pigment straight from the pot without mixing it with another medium) needs to be sealed as it will smudge if you rub it (again if your careful its ok).
I use testors dullcoat to seal it - matt finish and doesnt affect the pigment at all.
I used the pigments (straight ffrom the pot) on my test infantry guy on the first page - on the end of his coat and over is boots and even a little on is helmet and armour - i sealed it with Testors - no problems.

I like the pirates. Is P3 the system used by the foundry? If so you can really their 'look' about the figures.
Excellent subdued colours on the grenadiers
@ chunk p3 are the privateer press(warmachine, hordes) paint range - foundry are a different range. The whole idea with the pirates is to move away from the very muted paint tones i usually use!

Now as dipping is all the range i decided to try it out - this model took longer to glue than to paint - very rough base coat 5 minutes tops and i painted on the dip rather than dunking - not to shabby - you could get a tabletop standard army done in a couple of nights - no excuses anymore for the don't have time to paint crowd

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v67/emrys/DSC00242.jpg

Hmmk, the dipped one has come out well :)
The properly painted one looks far better though ;)
I like the use of the dark green on the test model; it makes a nice contrast to the lighter than usual bone colour. Not too sure about the steaks on the bone though.
Also, is there any need for the chest eagle to be silver? It's not a colour that appears anywhere on the model except the gun and it looks a bit out of place; maybe make it gold/green/red instead?

The streaks are to try and give the idea of 'aged' armour considering the suits are meant to be 1000's of years old and constantly recycled it always seemed odd to me to see them painted 'factory fresh'
Your right about the chest eagle (its actually grey not silver) i may go with the gold or maybe red to tie in with the shoulder pad.
everyone seems to be starting HE so i got to work on a HE prince last night. So far only base colours applied and a little shading on the armour -
Don't tend to paint 'bright' colours so its a bit of a challenge!

Beautiful work Syrme/Emrys :p ;)
Metal tutorial:
base coat boltgun metal (2 coats)
wash with chestnut ink, chaos black, and tamiya orange - i use glaze medium ro avoid pooling and a spot of matt medium to take the shine off.
Next highlights:
boltgun mixed with chainmail, then chainmail. Highlight edges with mithril.
Final bit Glazing.
Any colours you want i glazed (about 3-4 glazes) one part purple ink to 20 parts water.
Hope this helps!

Beautiful log and i love your DK, howd you do their bases?
After I've seen your pics I'm tempted on getting some DK..^^
Lovely painting..
How did you do the dipping on the terminator.. You said you applied the dip by painting it on then you shaked it or what did you do?
I think that a mixture of dipping then highlighting could turn out to be really nice..
Toschenko
25-03-2008, 16:44
Lovely red on konrad's armour, although I would have painted his skin with a lighter shade of purple (something like rotting flesh for the base then a lot of blueish glazes). Overall a great looking mini, though: it will be an inspiration for mine :)
Toschenko
@ hallowed - DK bases are very simple - GW sand, painted scorched bron drybrushed snakebite then bleached bone, edged with GW earth. Grass is a pale grass i got from barule.com
@ Fallan - Dip is painted on with a brush (biggish brush size 2-4) if it pools i use a spare brush to suck up the excess - no shaking required!
@ Toschenko - thanks for your comments - your right about the skin and I plan to keep the purple hue but bring it up with a couple of more highlights as its a little on the darkside.
and now for an update:
not the greatest picture but here are a unit of 10 lothrien seaguard, second unit almost done

Your HE look phantastic; congrats on those. You even have Maiden guard! Very cool and characterful minis, that. I adore how you made the colour scheme of the army and the bases fit together.
One question: In one picture, I saw that you fitted a Dragon Prince to a pot of machrite red. Since the piece of cork i used to use for mounting cav miniatures for painting seems to have vanished, I'm looking for new ways of making painting cav models more comfortable so how did you stick the guy to the paintpot? I can't see and pin....
Your Vampires look good so far. I'm not so much of a fan of the Carstein dude crossing his swords (modelwise, the painting is cool), Mannfred is looking rad. Somehow, the red armour seems to look a little flat; maybe some additional highlights would make it look even better?

That Dark Elf is looking excellent: the metallics are wonderful. Would be nice to see a larger picture however.
Really looking forward to seeing more
well its great to be back posting and painting - that silly warhammer online took up to much spare time till i kicked the habit.
Harry - Ill try and get a group shot of the High Elves - the army was finished last April (omg. so long ago!). The bases are a love/hate thing. Imo they really help the army 'pop'. I enter tournaments to play a few games but specifically with the aim to get a best army nomination:rolleyes: The HE colour scheme with matching bases really helped this imo. Got Best army in the 2 tournaments i used them in last year in including a GT (irish) which was great.
@ Arhalien - Thanks for the comments on the armour - Hopefully i will have a group shot of the WIP unit tomorrow!
I am concentrating on the DE for the nex few weeks but I have a couple of other projects already lined up for later in the year (orks and WoC) as well as plans to expand my IG (more tanks!) and other bits.
wip of the BG unit hope to have it finished over weekend (except for standard)

Holy cr@p on a pita! I can't believe I just noticed this thread now.
Some great work you have going on here Syrme.
I think the colour scheme for the High Elves Is excellent! The red/white/gold looks way better than the blue. It makes for more dynamic looking models IMO.
Looking forward to the updates! consider me subscribed!
my resin bases arrived last week - black guard still unfinished but better pic than previously

Great work, dude!
For the mane what about a creamy, off-white colour? Although, to be honest, I think it looks pretty cool as it is.

Really nice.. The armor is superb, very nice tone on the green and excellent choice of hl-color..
The only thing I've would have done different ist the color of the horse.. Maybe something a little bit more nasty looking than brown... But that's just my oppinion, the painting is ace.
Keep up!
hmm tempted to go paint some more VC now. Happy how this came out
edit - just noticed sword is not quite finished yet

Man, the last mini is wonderful :D
How about a larger shot of the WoC general, too? Especially of the shield, it seems we're losing a great work of yours...

That's a great figure - wight king? It looks great, very imposing.
here is a quick pic of the blood knights im currently working on - again armour matching the wight - which is a theme that will be carried through on all the armour.

Lot's of cool stuff here. Do you ever finish an army? You seem to be distracted be every cool new modelrange (like most of us i guess! :D).
Where do those resin bases come from? They look prety cool.
Keep up the good work and finish an army for once!

Think this is the first time I've seen those knights painted up on a forum and they look pretty nice, I think the verdi gris sets them off really well
cheers - the verdi-gris/bronze armour is the theme throughout the army.
Im using grave guard models as regular skellys and all characters and black knights have same scheme.
Hopefully have a pic of the finished GG/skeletons sometime tomorrow.
here is a pic of 3 of my skeletons (I am using grave guard models as rank and file skeletons)
I resized it a little small but you get an idea.

Your stuff is excellent!
The verdi-gris effect is really well done. An army of this standard is gonna look awesome!
Thanks for sharing!

I have been a member of this forum for almost three years now, and I still run into amazing logs from time to time that for some reason I have not yet seen. It seems to happen to me quite often these last few weeks.
This is another one of them.
My goodness, you have some amazing stuff in here. I like the fact that each page is pretty much dedicated to a different army, so you'll never know what kind of things you'll run into next.
As a Wood Elf player, your first pages are very inspirational to me. I like how you did your Wood Elves quite a lot. Too bad you haven't shown much else afterwards.
Not that it matters much, because all the things that come after are a joy to look at as well. Those Blood Knights are sick, and your entire Vampire Count army is amazing to look at so far.
But I guess your High Elves stuff amazes me the most. Not because I like High Elves so much, because they are my least favourite of the armies you're showing here, but because of the fact that you pulled off both bright and red in such a way, that it actually looks good on them.
You see, I don't really like those models, and I hated the dreaded "Red Period" of GW, but you pulled it off magnificently. They might even be the best High Elves I've seen so far.
Keep it up! Hope to see more.
cheers Daniel - i really appreciate your comments! just for you i have searched through my photobucket account for some more WE pics! most were painted just before i started blog

Dude!!! You made me cry! Why?!?
These are wonderful!!!!! (Yeah, I really needed that many exclamation marks)
I'm glad to see that my basing is being done the same way as yours... That is kind of reassuring. And you even gave them a movement tray, just like I did! >_<
What isn't reassuring though, is the fact that your Wardancers look so muscular! How the HECK did you do that? I love the earthly tone on them.
I chose a very colourful purple for my Wardancers. I don't regret that decision, but I kind of wish I have a unit that looks like yours.
You'd make me happy if you could tell me how you did their skin and faces. And how was that green brownish colour of their clothes done?
Top job!
EDIT: And who's that guy in front of the Wardancer Lord? Is he a Direct Only?
Hi - The skin was painted with GW tanned flesh (discontinued now) over scorched earth base colour with bleached bone add for highlighting - I used layering to give th idea of muscles (you can still see the scorched brown coming through in places)
The cloth was painted with snakebite base colour adding desert yellow to the mix for highlighting.

Hihi, well good thing I bought about 5 pots of Tanned Flesh before they were discontinued.
Interesting approach... Don't you mean Scorched Brown as a base colour?
And that guy in front of the "Lord" model. Is that Direct Only? Because I don't have that one, and I like him!

yes scorched brown - nope he is a regular wardancer - direct only models in back rank with 'lord' model
Here are my Black Knights on barded steeds.

I realy like the paintjob on your Vermin Lord, eventhough i don't realy like the model itself. Maybe it's the pose that makes it look a bit better... i don't know....

his left leg (the bent one) is shorter than the other leg - I found by mounting it on foam so its slightly raised helps (at least to the naked eye) correct the perspective a little.
