cheers for the feedback guys.
unfortunatley i've hit a bit of a personal stumbling block motivation wise for these guys so i'm gonna take a back seat away from them for a while. i'm going to try and get some other stuff that's been burning away at me done. all the stuff that i do will start appearing in my general project log which can be found here- http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26344 for anybody that's not been there before be warned it's a long old thread;)
i do still aim to have these done for the beggining of june.

RESURECTION!!
hi guys
well it would seem i've managed to get my motivation for these guys back. namely i've got a deadline of the 5th of may to have them done, so this means that i've got a fair amount of painting to get done over the next 7 1/2 days here's what i've managed to do over the last 3 days-
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/Dark%20Angels/100_1701.jpg
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/Dark%20Angels/100_1702.jpg
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/Dark%20Angels/100_1703.jpg
and the whole squadron together-
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/Dark%20Angels/100_1704.jpg
you'll notice that there's a distinct lack of landspeeder in the squadron pic. that's because i've had a slight change of thought after getting some advice from a mate.
basically the army will look somethign like this-
Master on jetbike
Attack squardon 1- sarg with pfist, 2x plasma guns, standard bearer, apothecary, attack bike with heavy bolter and ls tornado.
attack squadron 2- sarg with power weapon, 2 meltaguns, attack bike with multimelta.
attack squadron 3- sarg with pfist, 2x plasma guns, attack bike with multi melta.
Support squadron 4- 1x ls tornado with assault cannon+multi melta
Support squadron 5- 1x ls tornado with assault cannon+multi melta
this all comes to a nice 1500 points exactly.
still to paint- 6 bikes(including standard and medic), 1 attack bike, 2 ls tornados and the master. so alot still to do but i'm confident i'll get it done.
now i've just got to drag myself away from my computer.
thanks for looking.

this thread makes me want to collect RW so much!
James, your thread just gave me an excellent idea... now that I'm thinking of doing a full army of deathwatch guys, I think I'll have a deathwatch bikesquad led by a ravenwing member (I know, it might not totally fit fluff-wise, as the DA are kind of sketchy when it comes to fielding members in the DW, some say they do and some say they don't) and a white scar. I haven't really thought about what other chapters will be present in the squad. I know I want an iron hand and imperial fist terminators as well, and potentially a deathwing terminator as well (sorry, I'm an old-school DA player and figure I need to show such favoritism).
Basically what I'm trying to say is after seeing your awesome work, I'm inspired to paint some convert and paint some ravenwing just as several others in this thread have said.
It all looks very smooth and really great. Only I can't help thinking that the first time that landspeeder is going to skim low under a tree it will lose the chapter symbol. I can see it in my mind every time I look at that landspeeder and it goes like: clang "****, did we lose something?" craning their necks to look behind them and then smack up against a tree. Sorry, I just have a very lively imagination.
Ow, and I like the banner, so I'm kind of hoping you didn't cut it into a triangular form. But then again, when you did and you have it painted, I suppose I don't mind anymore.
Weird question maybe, but are you going to do a Shrike too? It's only I find him awsome and I would like to see your version of him.
Heh, I like the comment about losing the chapter symbol. For some reason, I see the ravenguard, as DA (and space marines for that matter) caring the most about the chapter symbol, and thus including it in the dimensions of the vehicle. I'd leave losing the chapter symbol hood ornament to a tree-branch to those crazy space wolves or blood angels caught in the black rage (ahh, the ultimate road, errr, air rage). I can see them just blitzing at the enemy with wanton lack of care for what happens to their vehicles. I see the ravenwing more as professional riders/drivers/pilots, somewhat like jason statham in the transporter.

They look fantastic as usual. :)
That DA-style headlight is sweet, never seen that before. Definitely awesome work, as usual. As for the bbq and beer taking over, I say eat some of the bbq, and just bring a cooler of the beer back to your workspace with you. I've found that a little (or a little more than a little) alcohol in my blood while painting helps calm my hands.

That's some awesome work there Spiky! I'm really impressed with the great quality you can produce in a short amount of time.
The one thing that has always prevented me from painting a cool black army is the highlight. You seem to have it down pat. IIRC you only used one highlight of codex grey yes?
Sweet, I'm looking forward to both the medic and standard bearer.

yep the heads from the rw sprue. it's meant to be a techmarine helmet but as you can't have a techmarine on a bike i thought i'd use it for my medic. i trimmed a few knobily bits from it so it looked slightly different.
@SC, yep i'm trying to get the army finished by next saturday as i've got a campaign weekend to go to and thought it would be good to use them then.

well guys i've got a dilema, i've finished the RW standard bearer up to the point of doing the banner-
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/Dark%20Angels/100_1721.jpg
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d42/spikyjames/Dark%20Angels/100_1722.jpg
the problem is that i can't decide on what to put on the banner, i really like the idea of of having a raven swooping in on it's pray and i think i may have seen a pic of that somewhere in the fluff, i've had a look through what i've got at home and can't find anything. i may just copy the pic on the side of the land raider in the codex.(well sort of)
so i guess i'm looking for some inspiration or pointers on where i could find a suitable pic to put on the banner.
so out to you guys.
cheers
james
I like the idea of a raven with its claws open like its about to grab its prey, with a shining red eye. Maybe some sort of latin writing underneath.
I think a Black and White painting of a nicer version of the RW logo are a good way to go. something akin to the RW badge from FW: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/acatalog/QUATERMASTERS_STORE_WARHAMMER_40_000_SYMBOLS_10.ht ml (a bit down on the page)
Good luck with the master, Spikeyjames! :)

wow, this is a really cool log. i've been following your work on marines for some time and you've got some of the cleanest minis i've seen, you must have the steady hands of a surgeon or something
this army, which is supposed to be "gaming quality" tops a lot of the stuff i've seen, very brilliant whites
are you planning on basing the bikes at all or just keeping them unbased?

Down and to the left with both those I have, one converted so I thought I may have added weight but seems not. Used GS and a small pin to try and get it right as well. *shrug*

Yeah, that freehand is brilliant james. Is there going to be script of some kind at the bottom? It seems rather top-heavy. As for the skill involved, I have nothing to say besides it's too good, too precise, and I wished I could do that...

i may re-visit the standard at some point but for now the ravenwing are done(a bit burnt out after the last week and a half).
as for what's next well i'm gonna slow down a little and there's alot of stuff to get done that'll go into my general log. some fairly standard ogres(well alot really) more mentors(there's always gonna be more) and i've got a squad of deathwing to do to go with this lot.
cheers everybody, expect a full army shot next week at some point.

Spiky, I'm going to have to get a list of everything you're going to paint in the next 2 months so you stop making my efforts look like they were done with a toddler with crayons.

Anyway, the MoTR that I did also leans to one side a bit, I fixed it by pinning it to its flying stand.

the blade was done using a couple of the new foundation paints with lots of water, adeptus battle grey and astronomican grey i then gave it a final highlight of skull white.
on the gaming front, well i played 3 games with these at the campaign weekend at spiky club and won all three against necrons, nids and battlesuit heavy tau. so overall i'm very impressed with how they play. i have a tournament in a few weeks so i may have to get the terminators done sooner as it's slightly higher points value.

Is that a tournament in Basingstoke by any chance James? :eyebrows:
I would expect these guys to walk through a necron army, however nids and suit-tau is good going (a Tau versus Ravenwing rematch could be very interesting sir). Ravenwing plus Deathwing should be good at 1750, can't wait!!! :)

for the robes i do it this way-
1st base coat of snakebite leather, may need a couple of layers to get a nice even colour.
2nd build up bleached bone leaving snakebite in the recess' it'll need a few layers.
3rd a final highlight of skull white very watered down.
hope that helps.
i'm now going to do bases for the whole army, some terminators and a small tactical squad (painted the same as the ravenwing, i'll just say they've got punctures or something. yeah! brothers with punctures) or should i just do them normal DA, what do you all think?

El-Diablo
06-05-2007, 17:59
I'd go with dismounted ravenwing. I seem to remember a comic strip a few years ago which had a RW squad dismounting. Makes the force look more coherent instead of 'borrowing' a single tac squad from one of the other companys.

06-05-2007, 19:19
OK I'm gonna have to be a lone voice saying otherwise about the dismounted Ravenwing! They are supposed to live in the saddle practically - even eating and sleeping there. This was in the fluff surrounding their skilled rider/jink rules of old. Go with it if you want though it will be cool anyway and they are your models etc.
It will just seem a bit odd won't it? With a well painted and sticking to the codex Ravenwing and Deathwing force to suddenly have ravenwing on foot?
neathleanan
06-05-2007, 19:34
Hi James, I PMed you anyway, but I reckon dismounted Ravenwing (on the hunt) and riderless bikes as objective markers.
Why not do those Deathwing in RW colors as well... (every fluffnut that's reading this will surely have died by now :D)
Hi there..
I love the idea of dismounted bikers.. afterall there are times when they are on the hunt that they will need to enter area where even bikes cannot go..
Thinking buildings.. tunnels and sewers etc etc..
However thinking that rather than using them as a tactical squad, I thought a full squad of assault marines (wihtout jetpacks) would be more appropriate?
Continue to inspire us with your fantastic models,
Best wishes,
Carl

06-05-2007, 21:01
thanks for the input guys, i'm going to go with the dismounted rw, just to keep with the army theme. it's just the deathwing that'll stick out.
the main reason i'm doing these is due to having to have a legal combat patrol force for an upcoming tournie:)
james

06-05-2007, 21:58
Well if I understand the fluff in the codex correctly (which is debatable) Ravenwing and Deathwing regularly co-operate 'you find 'em we'll kick their arses' so it won't be out of character.
Question is are you doing to do a little 'terrain piece' a la parking lot out front of the bikers pub? could make it an objective marker perhaps?
As ever great work I would love to be able to paint that fast that well
While you can't legally use only bikes in a combat patrol you should check with a judge before entering. According to the rules not everything is possible to cover and some things should work.
It would be fitting with a combat patrol on bikes and while you can't normally field them as troops without the Master it would make sense to allow them as such in Combat Patrol where you can't use the Master.
But dismounted bikers could be cool though. And as was said earlier, those empty bikes could make a nice objective.
Would you include the dismounted ravenwing in your regular army?

the bone was fairly simple, i started by painting bleached bone over a white undercoat and made sure i had a solid even coat. i then painted vermin brown into the reccess's and neatened this up with more bleached bone. i then gave it a final highlight of skull white.
just make sure to keep the paints watered down so you get an even coat.

i only just found this dark angels log of yours, and as a dark angel player i must say you have done some fantastic work in this log. My current work is termies and the deathwing commander whom i just made from some FW bits and DA termies bits so to see the models you have produced made me get out the paints and start on mine, thanks.
Also you do know you can give a DA termie squad alternate weapons...like 2 stormbolter powerfist, 1 lightning claws, 1 storm shield and thunder hammer and then have a assult cannon/heavy flammer added. you can do whatever combo my 1st termie squad is 3 thunderhammers and 2 lightning claws, but the squad looks really sweet how it is,

thanks for the comment's guys, this has come back from the depth's a tad though.
@TDR, yep i know about the Deathwing but i'm not a big fan of mixing up squads that much.
all of the stuff in this log has gone to new owner's now anyway:( there will be more deathwing in the next few month's though, and possibly another ravenwing army too.
cheers

There will be a master of The Deathwing:)
hey how'd you do the DW symbol on the term's shoulder pads? seeing they don't make the transfers any more? :(
There is one single, solitary DW transfer on the "Space Marine Vehicle" transfer sheet.

Spiky, my apologies for having never posted on here (even though I've lurked a good few times)! You army is fantastically painted and slickly executed! Never been a huge fan of the DA, but these are changing my mind!
Solid five from me, keep it up!

Know it's a while ago you did this Spiky, but can you tell me where you got the inspiration for your different types of mentor bolters?

A superb army you've got here Spiky; love the crisp black, and the Deathwing Termies are stunning, especially the faces.
One question; on your Ravenwing Plasmagun biker, what colours did you use for the plasma coil?

Ah, I wondered why I didnt recognise the colour, its one of the few GW colours Ive never actually used. Looks very effective on the plasma coils... may have to steal that ;)
