Alright, I'm gonna be honest, I'm a sucker for WWII-style aerial combat. This game just looks great, and I'm dying to get my hands on it.

Now, I don't have the money at the moment, so it's not like it's burning a hole in my pocket, and I've got to convert some friends to the idea of playing the game, so that means I've got some time to plan.

What are some good starter forces for all the races? I'm leaning towards Imperial Navy and Orks for starters, so any help on making some starter forces for them that allow for some interesting dogfights and maybe an alternative mission or two, like convoy runs and the like.

Any help is appreciated.

I've gone for a navy starter force of 4 Thunderbolts and 2 lightnings.

I didn't even bother with bombers, as I figured that if I did play a bomb missions i'd just equip my fighters with bombs.

my mate went for eldar, and to match my 6 he only needed 4 planes (so cheaper option!) he got 2 nightwings and 2 phoenix.

There are already some (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=71881) threads (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74038) on this topic, however here is a shopping list I built for our club, that will set you back about the price of a battleforce and start you off with all you need- prices quoted are in Pounds Sterling and Australian Dollars

Here are some good starting squadrons for you to consider. They include enough fighters (including additional weapons loads in case of the orks) to make up 100 points for dogfighting scenarios, as well as different aircraft types for transport or bombing missions, as well as ground defences where appropriate. These lists will see you through small to medium games pretty well (and by the looks of things, large games will take a long time to play, so these should cover you in most circumstances!)

2x Phoenix
2x Nightwings
1x Vampire Raider

140 points, gives you air to air, air to ground and transport capability

6x Barracudas
2x Tiger sharks
3x Skyrays

184-220 points, gives you versatile air to air, air to ground and transport capability
51 / $125

4x Thunderbolts
2x Lightnings
2x Valkyrie
1x Marauder/Marauder Destroyer
3x Hydras

184-226 points, gives you versatile air to air, air to ground, ground to air and transport capability. Imperial Navy have a wide variety of all types of aircraft, so you are fairly safe to swap marauder classes for vultures if you prefer, go all thunderbolts or lightnings for fighters, or even get a thunderhawk or arvus for transport depending on what you like.

204-220 points, gives you air to air and air to ground capability. Chaos currently do not have ground support or transport, but this does not matter as they are allowed to choose another scenario in cases in which transport are needed.

178-202 points, gives you air to air, air to ground and ground to air capabilities. Orks currently don't have a transport option, which does not matter game wise for them. There are currently no models for the 'eavy flak kannons, but the imperial heavy aa gun is a good stand-in model, looking practically the same.

I would be tempted to swap the heavy flak cannons in the Ork army for Specialist Games Flak Wagons. Flak Wagons can't fire as high but have been far more usefull than they look on paper. Eldar, Tau & Orks have no Bombers equiped with bombs so they have to come down to height 1 to hit ground targets. Imperial and Chaos have bombers. but if you take the bombers down with your fighters this leaves the flak wagonz open to defend against strafing fighters which are more manuoverable and less easy to catch.

I just put them in because it's easier to get the imperial heavy flak gun models at the same time as the rest of the forgeworld order :) Especially since ordering to Australia, 3 flakwagons cost 17 pounds. but whatever floats your boat, these are rough guides, and any AA can be swapped for anything else of your choices.

3 flak wagonz cost 17 squid. remind me never to go to Australia. Especially as it's filled with convicts and heathens, well thats what Prisoner Cell block H and Outrageous fortune have lead me to believe :P

Well the price part is anyway, we have to mail order them from old blighty (9 pounds for the minis, 8 pounds postage).

Oh, and i suggest you go watch the movie 'Chopper (http://www.middlemiss.org/lit/weblog/film/chopper.jpg)' too. It's even set in my home town ;-)

Yeah, the only viable way to order stuff from the uk or forgeworld is to do group orders to save on postage.

And, Australia isn't really full of criminals, except for parliament.

Anyway,I feel for you on the post.I live only 20 odd miles from the World so when I get my stuff to start(and I will,I will!) I'll just catch a bus and make a day of it! Lucky me! Well,you got the decent cricket team!

On topic(at last) I think you've summed it up right proper and I'll use those lists as a solid base.Ta muchly.
