View Full Version : How many points of one army did you have before you started your 2nd?

07-04-2007, 12:47
Well Im still on my first army Im working on around 750 points right now of Elder saim-hann but I like other units from other armys and I would like to collect some of these units so How many points did you have before you started a 2nd army?

07-04-2007, 12:51
3000 of Imperial Guard (2nd edition, so that may translate into 2000 - Iīve never counted it as I started DE on their arrival at the beginning of 3rd edition), then 3000 (3rd edition) of Dark Eldar and then 3000 of DeathGuard (3rd edition).
But mostly I bought some units of the respective armies before the others were finished. I still buy Guard stuff from time to time.

07-04-2007, 12:56
oh because I really like Blood ravens from space, Normal T'au and IG but I can't really collect all that + elder.

07-04-2007, 13:00
About 1500 worth of Tau. I got bored pretty quickly and switched to Orks. Still going strong.

07-04-2007, 13:02
Got to 3000pts with my tau then switched to deathwing at 1500pts,
still use my tau the most though

About 3000pts of Orks before I started Iron Warriors. I still play all of my armies though, 5000pts of Orks now and 4000pts of Iron Warriors, not to mention Imperial Guard.

07-04-2007, 13:08
@Dragonlv8: just remember youīre on a geek forum - these may seem like large numbers, but many of us have been playing the game for years (11 in my case).
I think 1000 points of models make an army, so then it is appropriate to change (except if you started an army and donīt like its style).

07-04-2007, 13:20
wow you have played for 11 years.
I was 2 years old when you started :O
I look up to you.

07-04-2007, 13:53
Nah, donīt. It just means that I spent lots of money more than you on a quite silly hobby I love and it allows me to rant about how the old times were better (though this is in most of times not the case). ;)

07-04-2007, 13:58
About 2000 pts of Nids then 13th Company. After 1500 pts of 13th company I started another few armies.

07-04-2007, 13:59
5,000 points of orks, followed by 4,000 points of deathguard. i usually start an army at 2000 points. for fantasy i tend to cap at 3000 points so i can run 2 lord choices aka lizardmen (slann and oldblood) or ogres (tyrant and slaughtermaster)

07-04-2007, 14:03
I had about 150pts of "Iron Fists" before I started Black Templars, and about 3k of BT before the Kroot Mercs and 10k of BT before The Death Guard.

I like my Templars.

07-04-2007, 14:04
so how much points of Elder should I get before I start on next army?

07-04-2007, 14:07
Depends on the size (points limit) of games you and your opponents like to play. Additional units allows extra felxibility and so you can make choices, leaving stuff out, but ultimately it is up to you how many points you have.

07-04-2007, 14:08
stick to 1500pts if you want to play many armies. This will give you a good sized force without taking up lots of space.

07-04-2007, 14:11
ok thanks.

well i have like 1/3 of the space wolves chapter somewhere in amongst collecting that massive waste of money (when can i use that many at once) i started dark eldar as they came with 3rd edition box set ness.
i must have got like 2000pt of them before i decided i would collect nids... which i got to roughly 1000-1500pts of, then i was distracted by necrons which reached 3500pts in about a month....... then i got onto my iron warriors which are rougly 1500-2000pt maybe less, but it was collected as a 1500pt force, now has additional units added.

and now i am back to collecting nids again, and i prob have enough sprures etc to field 3000pt+ though being nids its prob alot less, but im sure i have more than 1 standard force orgainisation chart.

edit: i will add that oi have been playing since 2nd edition and roughly 13years :P

07-04-2007, 14:18
Only thing about collecting more than 1 army, you can't use them at the same time.

07-04-2007, 14:19
I'd say when you get bored of them and/or have a few of each unit and hence able to field practically any force. However with the large battles supplement around the corner one could actually get to field a large force on a regular basis so may make it even more attractive. Some folks like to have many small-ish forces from many races though (ie around 1500-2000 that most games are played at)

For me it was around 5000 points (when translated into 3rd/4th edition points rather than second) of Slaanesh/Emperor's Children collected over about 7 years. I was just about to start my second force some years back, probably nids which were getting redone at the time or Thousand Sons, when my models all got destroyed in an accident.Back to square one, twelve years of gaming and I have around 500 mostly unpainted points of EC to show for it now, be years before I think of anything else again. :p

Have to agree though, don't worry too much at folks having masses of points, many build them up over years and years, after all even if you have 30,000+ points of one force (as some do) if they're all painted and finished and you're still in the hobby, not much else to do but get more if you don't fancy some other force! :chrome: (Mind you there are also those like myself who keep things rather small, but do a lot of stripping and repainting as their skills improve)

Captain Micha

about 200 pts :D

I started my necrons and Tau at almost identical times. those are my first two. and still going strong *L* usually when I get angry at one I switch to the other for a while... *usually its my crons I stay angry at... damn you pariah. damn you immortals...* yes I actually plan on having a certain point where I stop collecting them *L* and the number is probably not higher than 2.4 k each.

after I finish assembling this batch of tau, I plan on collecting some space marines (just a little....) then going back to my necrons (sooo expensive to finish off that last bit....) then tau, then probably start my Imperial Guard... unless of course the Dark Eldar really do get a new codex.. then I will probably buy it, so that I can determine (and yet stall further) whether or not it is time to go gun baby!

my, potential eldar or dark dar force and my space marines are probably at most going to cap out at 1.5. (several 750 pt list varients) my Ig....... is going to be by far my largest....... 12.5k in lists and different worlds work of Ig and counting....

07-04-2007, 14:43
Only thing about collecting more than 1 army, you can't use them at the same time.

Yeah, you're better off finishing one army rather than having 2 half-done armies.

I'd advise getting your current army up to 1500 points (and painted! ;)) before starting anything new.

I think I had about 2000 points of eldar before I started my marine army.

07-04-2007, 14:51
i d have to add that after you have painted your exoisting force is a good time to concider new models/ armies cause else you end up with way tooo much un painted

07-04-2007, 14:52
I think my DAs were at about 1000pts when I started building up my Eldar. Then when the DAs slowly got to 2000, 3rd edition came out, and I quickly lost interest in marines and focused on my Eldar. Now, 10 years later, with my Eldar at about 8000pts (why do we do this to ourselves?), this new codex has rekindled my love of DAs. Haha, if only I had the money/ lack of responsibilities I did when I was in high school!

07-04-2007, 15:06
I have over 4,000 of Eldar including quite a few convertions and scratch builds. Female farseer and Bone-singer (made 2 months before the GW was released)

Light of the Emperor
07-04-2007, 15:27
I had about 3,000 points of marines before I realized how "annoying" they were. Then I went on to field about 3,000 points of Daemonhunters and I now have an IG force in the works.

07-04-2007, 15:27
A paltry 750pts of Tau. It doesn't seem like a lot, but I'm a meticulous painter and it took me quite a few months to finish it. Plus, I was able to fit everything I really wanted out of the Tau into that 750. What's up next? I'm working on 750pts of Guard.

07-04-2007, 15:37
About 3.5-4k of Guard, then about 3k of Lizardmen, fairly much all finished, whilst the guard crept up to 4.5-5k or so. I just bought 500pts of wood elves, (dryads and treekin, treeman to come) , to take part in the summer muster campaign at the local store, and have another 1200 odd points of Guard to finish ( 25 RR 6 ogyrns to finish converting, 60 standard cadians, A russ, turret undecided, a hydra, and some heavy weapon teams)

Two infantry heavy guard companies, with an armoured company isn't alot. It's just sensible!

07-04-2007, 15:39
I got 1500 points of Space Marines then I was like, dear god this is blandddddd, so I switched to IG. Planning to go up to about 3000 points then do Orks!

07-04-2007, 15:48
the first time-2000 points of space marines before i quit and sold them(just after 3rd ed. came out)

the second time: 1,000 points of Space Marines-then the Eldar came out. The SMs are being converted into alpha legion, and the Eldar are almost done... (just my birthday to go and i have 1,500 points to torture people with:p

07-04-2007, 15:54
I have 50 points of Grey Knights.

*shame* <_ _> (That's why I stopped posting here for a few months - I ended up having to use my christmas money on bills instead of WH40k stuff <;_;> all I managed was a blister of 2 guys. Haven't even gotten them put together or painted yet)

... Course I definitely haven't started a second army... either <._.>; Fear my puniness! Rawr?!

07-04-2007, 16:09

07-04-2007, 16:13
About 2,000pts of Imperial Guard, then 2,500pts of Death Guard and 1,500pts of Sisters of Battle.

I now own 9 40k armies, all of which are 1,500pts to save space, I also own 2,000pts of Beasts of Chaos for when I occasionally play WFB.

Really your best off working out a good 1,500pt list and getting that before starting another army, as 1,500pts is the standard that many people play. Also your better off having a complete bigger army than 2 smaller incomplete ones.

Im making my first army at the moment. Chaos marines. My list is 1000 points but i already created units ( like Cypher, whom i really wanted to paint ) and a dreadnought wich isnt even in my army list. So ill probably hit 1500 with my CSM. I want to stop myself there and expand into other armies. I want that for a couple of reasons, first off:

- new units = sweet, i love painting so im trying my hand at as much cool models i see.
- getting more into different armies, this will help me during games. To see everything from just one point of view is kind of dull.

Y'see, I've been playing since the RT days, and I have a good disposable income and a house big enough to store the stuff so here goes....

Started with a Harlequin army - 2000 points (RT)
Moved on to a Mentor legion force - 2000 points (2nd ed)
then a blood angels force - 3000 points (2nd ed)
a Tyranid swarm - 2500 points (2nd ed)
Moved into 3rd ed with a new SM force - dark angels - 3000 points
then came the eldar - 3000 points
then.. tyranids again - building another 2000 points on top of the original stuff...
IG came next - 2000 points - that took a while to paint..... then a 'bolt on' DH force of 1500 points -

Warhammer - not much - just a 2000 point wood elf army from the 5ed days - and a newer 1000 points from the new army book, and a chaos (slaanesh) army - 4000 points.

Count in various necromunda gangs, mordheim warbands etc.. thats a lot of minis in a lot of boxes....!

Maybe I should get a life - if I could fit it in between painting!

I collected aboot 1000 points of Tau first.
I got kinda bored with their plain Jane appearance, so I switched to Iron Warriors.

07-04-2007, 18:01
Start another whenever you like. Its your money and time so it doesn't matter when other people change to a different army.

07-04-2007, 18:10
About 500pts of Marines by 3rd Edition.

Now onto my second and only other army, IG.

Dat Wildboy
07-04-2007, 19:03
1000 points for me. i got 1000 points of tau, then went onto eldar but quit them because of the ancient codex. i then got 1000 points of feral orks. then 500 points of chaos followed by 500 points of dark eldar. then i quit 40k and got rid of everything. i mustn't forget the odd Imperial guard and space marine models i got (impulse buys. i was terrible).

i restarted 40k, i have 1000 points of bad moons converted from the remnents of my ferals. now i have a pitiful 200 points of dark eldar (a single squad and my secondary HQ. archon will be the first), but the force is growing.

i prefer smaller games, so 1000 points is the cut off point for me.

Son of Makuta
07-04-2007, 20:43
About 2000, I think. That also fits with the army sizes now - just shy of 5000pts of nids and just behind 3000 of (half unassembled) Eldar.

07-04-2007, 20:51
I had 7000 pts of IG before starting Daemonhunters. When Daemonhunters reached 3500 pts i've started with DIY SM.

08-04-2007, 00:43
wow, so many armys.
so by the sounds of all this about 1500 points then start on a small t'au army for me :)

btw I think my friend is crazy because he is gonna collect a 10000 point army of tau (yes thats tenthousandpoints of t'au)

Bolter Bait
08-04-2007, 03:43
Over 2000 points of Tyranids (not even counting my Trygon) before I diversified a few months ago into WH, of which I currently have 24 Sisters, 2 Inquisitors (one was free) and 2 Death Cult Assassins, which I believe is around 300 points. Thank goodness for Ebay.

08-04-2007, 04:29
I had about 1.500 pts. of Dark Eldar before I said "to hell with this!" and started my Ork army.

I never looked back.

I was a bit different from most people on this thread. Back in the day, about 12 years ago now, once i chose an army i pretty much stuck to it, call it obsessive if you like.

I havent really worked out the points cost of it in a long time but i had so many Empire models that i could field any configuration of troops you liked in the Empire list. Even had several choices of Knightly Orders. This was before warrior priests but i did have the War Altar and several War-Wagons.

In 40K i had about 4 to 5 thousand points of Ulthwe Eldar, not as impressive as the WHFB army to be sure. However this was before there were any Grav-vehichles available so there were quite alot of Guardians, Heavy platforms and Warwalkers in that collection.

08-04-2007, 04:49
Around 4000, although I never used more than about 3000. I then picked up a Chaos Army box on sale.

Trying to plan the third, fourth and fifth- all of which are ongoing projects. With the sixth.

08-04-2007, 04:51
Around 500. I am always bouncing from army to army. I've been playing for 5+ years now and don't have more than 2000 in one army.

08-04-2007, 05:46
I did 2k Space marines then I did 2k space marines (different army..but can be used in conjunction if needed first 2k were armour and razorbacks 2nd bikes)then I did 2k Guard. then after some fantasy went back to guard. now adding 1k sisters to guard

08-04-2007, 06:22
I think my sallies are up to 2000+ and i will start another diy chapter possibly raven guard or similiar , got the kits just haven't started buildin' 'n' paintin'

08-04-2007, 08:21
9000 pts of space marines( thanks to an uncle giving me his 3k points of marines and 1500 pts guard), followed by bout 3500 pts guard, ( still in progress )( thanks to an uncle giving me his 3k points of marines and 1500 pts guard), along with 2000 pts tau, and around 750 pts orks

noob killer
08-04-2007, 14:47
i started with a 1000pts of tyranids then turned to tau. i how have around 3500pts of tau. i am how starting to by a guard army (elysian drop troops) but for the time being i us my tau.

08-04-2007, 20:58
I had collected about 3000 points of Space Marines before starting on my Dark Eldar. Since then I do about 2000 points before moving on.

08-04-2007, 21:51
I had about 1000pt worth of Necrons before I started my Black Templar army right when the codex came out. Battleforce contents, Lord, Destroyer Lord, a few Flayed Ones, and extra Warriors. I have about 2000pt worth of BT right now, and I'm thinking about starting Eldar after buying their new codex.

I can't see myself having much more than 2000pt of an army. I don't fancy huge games. I do see myself going from army to army as I get to the 2000pt level, and when a new codex comes out. I like having variety; picking an army that suits my mood on game day. That always helps fuel a decision to start a new army (just like GW wants).

08-04-2007, 23:48
About 1600 points of IG before I started my Tau, but it wasnīt (and still isnīt) all assembled yet. Still, I find it a good accomplishment for someone who has only been in the Hobby since August 2006.

09-04-2007, 02:00
Mine is a sad tale of overspending and impulse buys. You are better off looking at the following post as a cautionary tale of what not to do.

Last August I started with a small skirmish force of Tau for a game that was to run during the fall. A Crisis Suit, a box of Fire Warriors, an Etherial, and a Kroot Shaper. It was to use modified Mordheim rules. While assembling the Tau the game they were intended for died on the vine. That should have been the end of it. I then decided (After Playing Dawn of War) to make a full army. I went with Space Wolves since I liked the Leman Russ tank in DoW, and they were the only marines that could take a Russ. I did not want to paint a bunch of Guard at that point. I bought a bunch of models both new and used, and began to work on them. I got the Battle for Macragge for a rule book and some marines.

Then I bought an old Eldar Battleforce (before they became impossible to find) since the new one is not such a good deal and i wanted to eventually do Eldar. Then I got a 3rd Edition box for the extra marines, and it came with Dark Eldar warriors. Instead of ebaying the warriors like I should have I started collecting Dark Eldar. Mind you that I have not painted miniature one at this point.

After that I filled out my DE force (now just need some raiders and a few misc models), and began picking up Ork vehicles for a Speed Freeks army as I found them cheap on ebay. I was now starting to paint my first squad of Blood Claws and my Captain. Things went slow so I arranged to trade some DE and money for 2000 points of Necrons with a pretty good paint job so I would have a force I could play until my Wolves were done.

This is about when I discovered Warseer.

Firebase issue 1 had a nice Ravenwing army in it so I decided to get some Ravenwing when the DA were redone. All the talk about the DA here got me interested enough to make a full DA army as well as a RW one so I got an Army Box and ordered a battleforce and two RW battleforces. I also acquired a Lord of Change and Old One Eye when I unexpectedly won auctions with bids less than 40% of retail.

With all these models likely to fill up my entire summer off and beyond what does this idiot do? Buys an Eldar Army Box on Friday :wtf:

I am just about done painting my first squad of Blood Claws, a Wolf Scout squad, half a Grey Hunter squad, and my Wolf Guard Battle Leader. Yesterday I put together 10 more marines destined to be Grey Hunters once their arms are put on, and put my first magnet in the shoulder of a metal space wolf figure. The rest of the minis are still unassembled/unpainted.

So in total:

~250 points of Tau (The Shaper is useless until I get a squad of Kroot)
~2500 points of Space Wolves (first 500 points nearing completion)
~2000 points of Dark Eldar
~2000 points of Orks
~2000 points of Necrons (Just need 6 more Destroyers to be done)
~3500 points of Dark Angels/Ravenwing (Once the three Battleforces, Sammael on Jetbike, and Chaplains (Bike and Jump) get here)
~1500 points of Eldar (Once the Army Box and Harlies gets here)
A few random models/vehicles from the Blood Angels, Chaos, Imperial Guard, Witch Hunters, and Tyranid lists.

Out of all this only about 35 models are painted, and only 5 are totally done (All Tau). This excessively long winter has kept me from working on much since December as I have no place with good enough ventilation to file metal/plastic or spray primer. When I get enthusiastic about something I tend to obsess. Since I can't work on my models too much I look online and read forums so I keep giving in to temptation and buying models I will not get to for a good year. God I have no willpower :cries:

09-04-2007, 02:01
At least 4000 points of Eldar before I started on Nids.

09-04-2007, 04:35
I have collected the Dark Angels first company before I moved on to regular Dark Angels. so I guess that is around 6-7000 points.

Templar Ben
09-04-2007, 17:04
I have an entire 1st company, 2nd company and 10th company worth of marines. My are Black Templar so I don't organize that way naturally. I moved into IG and it will take forever to get that kind of points without going FW. I have started picking up nids but I don't see it going as large as my marines.

09-04-2007, 19:40
I had around 1700 Pts of Eldar before i wanted somthing different and started on my new SM army (and by starting on i mean i have one model.....i got while signing up for a bunker pass at my local GW :p )

09-04-2007, 19:51
Well Im still on my first army Im working on around 750 points right now of Elder saim-hann but I like other units from other armys and I would like to collect some of these units so How many points did you have before you started a 2nd army?

I had a 5000ish point Dark Angels army in the 2nd edition that is now worth about 3000-4000 points not entirely sure of the exact value because I haven't bought the new DA codex yet.

I've since started and forgot about an Eldar army and have about 1000 points of that and I have a roughly 2000 point CSM army and I'm expanding it.

09-04-2007, 20:53
went a bit too far a 5000 point Blood Angels force (with 9 heavy support choices!) Before I finnally switched to the good ol imperial guard which I have played ver since.

Lord Balian
10-04-2007, 00:13
Depends on what you mean by army. :) I have probably 4000-5000 point of chaos, that consists of 3 different chaos armies.

About a 2500 mixed up undevided army.
Up to 2000 points of a Fallen Angels themed Alpha Legion army.
About 1500 points of normal Alpha Legion.

And I just started collecting DA, which was going to be my next army even before I knew about the new codex, so that was a treat for me. I'll probably keep on collecting DA, get something of everything over the years.

Then there is the 2500 points of Eldar my wife has. :D

Genestealer cult (2nd ed) 2000
Chaos (2nd ed) 4000
Tyranids (2nd ed) 1000
Tyranids (4th ed) 3000
Imperial guard (4th ed) 1850
