Very nice looking amry you have there, congrats. Did the GW staff have any issues with you using the orca at Warhammer world. If not I think I would bring down my scratchbuilt Tigershark.

Thanks

No issues at all. It was a campaign weekend event organised by the Tempus Fugitives rather than GW events Campaign weekends encourage fun play and interesting models anyway, but this was an apocalypse game, so anything went really.

Awesome look army so far, could you explain the pictures and the outcomes of the battles depicted?

Well I'll try my best. The first photo was a 1000pts doubles game vs Orks where we got totally owned by them getting the first turn and driving all their trukks up to our lines and parking them sideways in front of our gunline thus blocking line of sight. (ork trukks always wreck). Luckily, having a crisis army, I was able to redeploy and this photo shows some of the Ork bikers being countercharged by my carbine wielding warriors and command unit.

The second photo is the apocalypse doubles game which our team won. That was a very fun and tactically interesting game. Here you can see the second to last turn as the deepstriking crisis suits have taken out most of the tanks and the Orca prepares to drop it's cargo onto an objective.

The last two photos are a game I had against Dark Angels where I was horribly killed by a power-weapon armed deathwatch unit which charged me first turn (12" infiltrate) and swept through my units. I also lost about 700pts unluckily deepstriking off the board!

Anyway, since this isn't a battle report thread, there will be more progress photos coming soon, I promise!

Hey any updates?

By Thor's hammer; YES

This army got a bit sidelined as I had to work on some marines for another campaign weekend event in september where Tau were not permitted, but now that is over, I am back working on this army and hope to get it into a fully completed state.

As you saw on the rest of the log, I have completed the base coats on the whole army, but what it really needs now is some more details and highlights/blending. I am really pleased with how things are coming out, as I am taking my time with each miniature until it gets to a state I am happy with, rather than frantically trying to get stuff finished. So, expect to see a whole slew of crisis suit detail, plus the orca and the rest of it over the next few months.

By way of a return, here is what I have been working on recently, finishing the stealth team with the same electric lines indicating their active camouflage transition. It had been a while since I did the first one of these, so it took a bit of time to get the exact look back, with a couple of failed results.

I discovered the key to getting the moving transition look is:
1) Darker blue (I used regal) thick line ~1mm with thinner light blue (ice blue) and white lines wobbling slightly within that
2) There needs to be a small black line of armour beneath the electric line to provide contrast
3) a larger region of drybrushed dark brown (~ 2-3-mm) to begin the stealthed area. On a couple of models I didn't have this region big enough, with the stealth field merging straight into lighter tones, and it too me some time studying my original model to work out how I had achieved the effect.
4) drybrush/blend up the lighter highlights of bubonic/bronzed flesh/bleached bone

So here, I present to you, two members of Stealth Team Fior

The first member of team Fior is veteran fire warrior O'Kor. O'Kor has served under Commander Starblade since the second expansion, and was involved in much of the heavy fighting of the Damocles Crusade. During one of these engagements, the rest of O'Kor's unit was crushed by a space marine rhino of the Howling Griffons Chapter charging into their firing line emplacement. O'Kor distinguished himself by successfully planting a haywire grenade onto the tracks of the vehicle as it sped away, destroying the APC and causing it to flip over several times, killing several of the occupants. O'Kor was subsequently promoted for valour to Shas'Vre and has served in the cadre's stealth teams since.

The second stealth team member is Shas'ui M'Yen Ka.

As a fire warrior, M'yen always showed an aptitude for stealth activities. In several instances in his service record, his Shas'Ui noted M'Yen's propensity for creeping up on enemy squads, or remaining undetected in the undergrowth when the team was assigned to ambush actions. These abilities naturally earned him a place among the cadre's stealth teams, whose members tend to be more individualistic and introverted.

Beautifully clean finishing on the plates, which works really, really well next to the stealthed areas. Have you any plans to do one with a more complete area of stealth? What's on the workbench now?

Have you any plans to do one with a more complete area of stealth?

I ummed and ahhed about this for a long time. Whilst it might look cool, I thought it would disrupt the colour scheme of the squad and couldn't quite face drybrushing completely over a fully painted model. If I ever come acrosss another spare stealth suit model I might have a go though...

What's on the workbench now?
Well, interesting you ask... it's the rest of the stealth team!
There are 7 models done now, although I recently discovered another unsprayed one in the army case so he is being painted up next.

So without further ado, I present the remaining members of Stealth Team Fior:

This Shash'ui is in the process of redeploying to a better firing position, and is about to fire his jetpack. The powered actuators in his battlesuit armour allow him to run quickly even with the bulky burst cannon. Due to the speed of his movement, his suit's active camouflage does not have time to to adequately image the surroundings, thus only his feet are in camouflage.

Shas'Ui Kauyon'Nan is the dependable member of team Fior. His Sha'vre knows that Kauyon'Nan's aim is strong and true, and whether the squad is advancing into the teeth of the enemy, or if the more 'independent' team members are putting themselves in harms way, Kauyon's burst cannon will be there, laying down a hail or withering covering fire.

The following two members of the Cadre are wearing the older XV15 stealth armour. Since the Farsight enclaves seceded from the main Tau empire, resupply of battlefield materials and weaponry has been difficult, with the result that many units must resort to older or cannibalised equipment. Whilst other teams such as Team Fior have been upgraded with the newer XV25 suits, there are not enough of these to fulfill the entire Cadre's requirements, and these two members of Stealth Team J'Kaara wear the older model of stealth armour.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/grahamgilchrist/SPeRw2Gq2xI/AAAAAAAAFg8/eX9IBBv0M9Q/s800/Image352b.jpg

Whilst it is not unknown for strong bonds to form between fire warrior teams, especially among Farisght's followers, it is unusual to see such bonds among the usually individualistic characteristics of a stealth team. These two have formed such a bond over many years and operations together, so much so, that they can almost preternaturally predict each others actions and responses in combat. The Ta'lissera blood covenent between them means that they are more valuable to a commander together than as separate fighting units, and has earned them the nickname Team J'Kaara, or 'mirror' as they reflect each others personalities.

http://lh3.ggpht.com/grahamgilchrist/SPeRw0F0A4I/AAAAAAAAFhE/JRjEBU3QGrw/s400/Image353b.jpg http://lh3.ggpht.com/grahamgilchrist/SPeRw8jINiI/AAAAAAAAFhU/-f4HI6tD5ls/s400/Image355b.jpg

This Shas'ui, like many Tau in the stealth teams, is rather eccentric and refuses to upgrade to the newer battlesuit model, claiming that he has formed a bond with his 'lucky' suit over many years, and fears that he will fall in battle as soon as he adopts anything else. Whilst many laugh at his claims that the suit is tuned to his mental state, none can argue at his results and efficacy on the battlefield. Due to his stubborn refusal to accept new equipment, the other J'Kaara insists on also retaining his XV15 armour, so strong is their bond.

Team J'Kaara are often deployed by Commander Starblade in a rapid reconnaisance capacity or in restricted size environments, where their older and armour allows them faster speed and more maneuverability than the newer models.

This is a great squad, I particularly like the fluff around the old suits.

I would pick you up on the point Apologist made though which is about a more camouflaged model. Surely you dont have to paint it all first if you know what you are going to dry bush with dessert colours then you can just do a basic coat for that bit? Save time and make a cool different looking model...

Another update tonight. I have finished the final model of stealth team J'Kaara. Due to his crouching pose and the suggestions of Apologist and Omricon, I have made him in a more completed stealth position. If you look at him at just the right angle it looks like he is taking the profile of the rock.

Anyhoo, here are the photos. I apologise that the colours are slightly off because it's evening here and there was no natural light.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/grahamgilchrist/SPtpJYqAoMI/AAAAAAAAFjA/eAXifdXMug4/s400/Image380b.jpg http://lh3.ggpht.com/grahamgilchrist/SPtpI0g8V8I/AAAAAAAAFi8/2UIWMd-1SQI/s400/Image381b.jpg

It took quite a number of tries to get the stealth effect correct and consistent all the way round. It was a lot harder due to the larger area of transition effect when applied to the torso.
What do you think?

Now the stealth teams are done, I just have crisis suits left to finish (all 16 of them!)

[edit] Whoops, also not forgetting I have to fully paint the Orca - Doh!

Hi guys,
I've received a few PM's asking about templates and dimensions for my Orca (sorry it took so long replying to all you guys).

I actually got the size estimates from a copy of Imperial Armour 3. Obviously this is copyright so I can't provide copies to anyone, but if you can get a copy, it has scale profile drawings of the sides and top of the Orca, and this is what I used for getting the ratios correct.

As for the actual dimensions, I had to guess based on photos of the orca and the size of a crisis suit. There is also a scale drawing in the back of imperial armour 3 of the orca versus a rhino which might help you with dimensions if you have a rhino around to measure.

I can make no judgement on the actual GW model, but I can tell you the dimensions of mine are:
main body width: 122mm
main body height: 75mm
main body length (longest part): 372mm
engine width: 40mm
engine height (longest): 64mm
engine length (longest top profile): 115mm
Top tail height: 46mm
Top tail length: 96mm

Most of this was done by eye and ratios from IA3, and I have no idea whether these are anywhere near correct having never seen a real Orca, but it looks cool on the tabletop :)

Thanks for all the replies and kind words. The Warseer encouragement is really driving me to work on this project.

There will be more pictures of the Orca soon. I have not painted more on it since the basic paint job I did for the campaign weekend, but it will get a full re-work before I am done! I'll see if I can rustle up some more detail photos of it this evening in it's current state. :)

Hi Guys,
A little later than promised, I bring some photos of Orca stuff as requested.

First up, I have some photos of the base design I finally went with. As you may recall from a lot earlier in the thread, I was struggling to come up with a decent way to mount the Orca in it's flying stand with a low enough centre of gravity so it would not topple over.

After many ideas, I decided plastic tubing was not strong enough, and that I needed a metal tube for the flying stand. I got this from B&Q for a few pounds for about a metre.

http://lh6.ggpht.com/grahamgilchrist/SQEYdpny6JI/AAAAAAAAFj0/i66uuU6AcVg/s400/P1010311.JPG

To keep the centre of gravity and stop the orca toppling over, I needed a fairly wide and heavy flying base. I ended up making the base from a routed offcut of Oak:

http://lh5.ggpht.com/grahamgilchrist/SQEYcxFwduI/AAAAAAAAFjw/XUxauAifK6c/s400/P1010308.JPG

and mounted the pole to it using a screw with a wide countersunk head and a thread rivet inside the tube as seen in the first picture of this post.

http://lh3.ggpht.com/grahamgilchrist/SQEYbsSXVvI/AAAAAAAAFjs/5GHGaH4flKk/s400/P1010307.JPG

This all combines together thus with a little dowel on top to provide connection to the Orca. The dowel is unnecessary really, the tube could go straight into the hole under the Orca, but I didn't want to damage the balsa wood. It also means it doesn't spin around when mounted, due to the wood-against-wood friction.

http://lh4.ggpht.com/grahamgilchrist/SQEYeKv2mYI/AAAAAAAAFj4/GJggxAT-89w/s400/P1010314b.jpg

Since the Orca is fairly light, this setup works really well and is not in the least unstable. I would be tempted to use it even for something as large as a Thunderhawk. Another advantage of doing things this way is that the tube unscrews from the base, allowing for very easy transport in a miniatures case with the aircraft.

I've got some more pictures of the Orca mounted on this stand, plus some painting close-ups coming soon so stay tuned.

Dictator
24-10-2008, 02:22
I definitely would not have put as much consideration into the bases as you have. Then again, I probably would not have built a totally sweet looking ORCA.
I am very excited for the pics of the ORCA

GrahamGilchrist
24-10-2008, 15:21
Ok, found some spare time to upload a few pictures.

Now please bear in mind with all of these, that the painting is still WIP, and is by no means finished. There is still a lot to do on it yet, but I probably won't get round to finishing the paint job until nearer the end of this project.
One thing I am not quite sure about is how to detail the black parts. I will probably do them in the same way as for the crisis suits, but the Orca has much larger flat areas and may require a different type of blending...

Anyhoo, on with some pictures. To start with, here are some shots of the side detail:

Rear back:

Close-up rear side:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/grahamgilchrist/SQEYkYtQK6I/AAAAAAAAFkY/cgZKEreU9NQ/s400/P1010325b.jpg
Here you can start to see some of the detailing of the engines. As seen earlier, these were built with plasticard on top of the balsa base. The round engine vents on the side were done with greenstuff (hence why they look a bit 'blobby').

More to come later!

Your painting is excellent!!! You have managed the best stealth effect I've seen so far. I've seen a few paintjobs where people try to accomplish the active camo effect, and your scheme is the most effective I've seen to date. VERY well done! I wish I had half of your skill!!!!

Indeed I am still working on this army occasionally (as you can see I never finished painting all the crisis suits) but my enthusiasm for it was deflated when 5th ed. came out and basically made it rubbish (due to the lack of scoring units). You can be sure I will post more pics as I finish things (which may be slowly).

As Bob_hunk mentioned, I will be at Seige of Terra with a mix of Fists and Blood Angels, maybe entirely fists if I can get my **** in gear :)

I'm sure there will be paniced log updates over the next few months as we get nearer the time.

Ok, i look forward to them, and hopefully another fun filled PCRC video, probably featuring Apologist desperately attempting to finish an army whilst going through several stages of panic mode... actually makes me lol

:D

Congrats. This thread it two years old. You've really outdone yourself. I love Graham's stuff as much as the next guy, but are you really contributing anything?

WHY HELLO. I've taken a look through out your log, and I have to admit that your stealth suits are probably some of the best and coolest painted things that I've seen in some time. But I was in fact wondering how you painted like, the base, as I am quite tempted to do this. I hope you don't mind, but if you could tell me, that would be super!

No problem :)

The bases weren't all that difficult. It was mostly done with heavy drybrushing :)
The bases were either purchased resin casts or custom made with bits of broken up cork (from wine bottles and cork tiles). I then PVA'd sand to these.

Paint-wise, I think it was a vermin brown base coat, drybrushin up through snakebite leather, bubonic brown, desert yellow, bronzed flesh and bleached bone.

I tried to vary these in various areas of the base so that it would gain the appearance of a more natural desert and not look totally uniform.

so Gilchrist,

What are you taking to the siege of terra, knowing the PCRC painting timing, you must have decided by now?

Also, have any of the other PCRC members other than Apologist, Bobhunk and Lucifer216 decided on their armies?
