Hi I'm planning on creating a Cathay themed Skaven army and just want to run it by people, get new ideas etc and general help.

The basic background is they are Clan Eshin who have simply stayed in Cathay and have been influenced by everything, not just the ninjas. I wrote a list which is infantry heavy with quite a lot of assassins and other eshin in there but how could I convert the clanrats? I was thinking of a deep red colour and I'm going to convert all the weapons to be katanas.

Any ideas?

Sounds cool, I know the Nightrunners plastic box comes with a few katana-like weapons that would certainly help the cause.

I'm sure someone is going to come along and start arguing anally over the differences between ninjas/Cathay/katanas/Nippon etc - so as a pre-emptive strike to those people - sod off, no one wants to hear it :D (unless it consturctive and useful of course)

I reckon it's a very cool concept - as evil as most Skaven are, I find it intriguing that some Skaven assassins (ala Snitch) would set aside their murderous intentions for a while to humbley sit and learn from Cathayan sensei.

How large an army are you planning? Are you hoping for rank-and-file, or lots of skirmishers?

I'd say the Storm of Chaos Clan Eshin list would the be best place to start (obviously). I'd imagine that the overall look of the Cathay skaven would be a lot cleaner than that of normal skaven. More disciplined.

You'd have to leave out some of the more wilder contraptions I'd say - no Screaming Bells, no Rat Ogres, no Rat swarms, no Plague Monks, no Warp Cannons. (Although there are were-beasts in CAthay, I think - perhaps the Rat Ogres could fit in there, provided you made them a lot more respectable and cleaner, and not look like the normal slobbering beasts they are).

Jezzails would be okay - I believe they fit in with what little has been written about Cathay.

All in all, good luck with it. Personally I'd start off with something small - two boxes worth of Nightrunners and a Assassin/Warlord to lead them - all modelled up to look a bit more respectable and disciplined - using more brighter colours (red coupled with gold would work) on their armour and clothes - and patching up the holes and rips in their garments and armour with greenstuff to make them look well-looked after.

I've spent the last four hours on Warseer and various websites refinining my ideas about Cathay and I think that it is just a mish mash of 'our' East and mythology so I'm trying to get a definitive feel. I'm going to use the main Skaven list to keep it all legal and in 2000pts I had:

Grey Seer
Chieftain
Assassin
Assassin

24 Stormvermin
25 Clanrats
25 Clanrats
25 Clanrats
25 Clanrats
20 Slaves
5 Night Runners
5 Night Runners
6 Night Runners

12 Gutter Runners
5 Gutter Runners
5 Gutter Runners
3 Rat Ogres

I was going to keep their Eshin bits as they are because they've obviously been influenced by Inja, Cathay and Nippon enough but I can just picture that old grey seer model which is crouching down holding a death globe wearing a silk robe lol. Any ideas? I'm a fairly decent sculptor and very good painter.

Apologies that this has turned into a half background/half painting thread.

amoral "I don't care what you do, as long as you're a good student" martial arts master types are not uncommon in kungfu movies. For a recent example, Pai Mei in Kill Bill.

well, here's a link to plenty of Chinese swords. Some of them look very much like katanas, some of them influenced the katanas design.

It could give the thread starter some ideas.

Do you plan on using any Rat Ogres? I think they have great potential to show the Cathay theme of your army. Make them resemble grotesque East Asia style demons.

There are some demon warriors there, their grotesque faces could influence how you do rat ogres.

So you don't mind converting? Well, one very distinct aspect of Chinese style armor is that sash that goes around the waist, held by a belt. You would have seen it on some of the above links. Stick that on like, any armor really, and Bam!, it looks chinese.

it can be nice and trim for high ranking dudes

but these are scurvy skaven ratmen, so something messier yeah?

That little sash wouldn't be too difficult to model. It also gives you cloth to paint that red you want, and it makes your clanrats stand out from regular.
Skaven models are pretty hunched over though, so it might not show up that well in regiments.

As for your Grey Seer.... a Fu Manchu mustache/goatee is a must, a very classic "evil oriental sorcerer" look. just google 'Fu Manchu' for a ton of images.
Could also look into Qing dynasty uniforms of high ranking officials. Their hats with the tassels could be interesting.

There was a lot of tossing troops in mass groups at each other. So you don't have to go too overboard on the rank and file troopers.

Yes, Oni are a great idea for the rat ogres.

I would do the stormvermin fairly individual.Sort of samurai. And the gutter runners as ninja.

Just suggestions, of course.

I am also playing with this idea and have collected some information and material.

My general inspiration are the ratlings of eastern mythology, called Nezumi. They are featured in the Kamigawa series of the "Magic the Gathering" card game, most prominently the character of Ink Eyes (see below), wanting me to do a completely white fur army.

Then you can find a bunch of information from "Legend of the Five Rings", card game for pics and "Way of the Ratling" RPG book for further information (small update in "Creatures of Rogucan"). Alderac ( http://www.alderac.com/ ) even had some Ratling miniatures, but they are OOP and rare even on ebay. The fighting monk characters are a fine addition though. Keep an eye on future releases, as some minis might come back sometime.

For back flags, use the LOTR Khandish warrior banners:

Also have a look at this shop on Japanese Model Railroads:
http://www.japanmodelrailways.com/shopenglish/
I bought some Japanese buildings (temples and N scale traditional houses), just to get some nice rooves for covering my warp cannon, wheel of doom, bell and desease pot. Will add some flavour.

If you need some expensive conversation material, slaves or more inspiration, have a look at the Japanese style Goblins and Ogres from Rackham. They even have a Goblin rat shaman (pic5)!

And I will use the Spawn figure Jyaaku (pic7) as a mercenary giant, if I decide to use one (below the three dragon heads is a "metal" rat head!)

BTW: Do you have the fan made Cathay army book? Nice for more inspiration!

Sounds like a cool idea, you could use some of the Rackham Wulfren or Devourers for Rat-Ogres as they are more clean, the female Devourers look partiularly Ninja like. Please tell me that your going to make your Grey Seer look like Splinter from TMNT, that would be cool!
