Hey,

I'm planning on getting the Eldar battleforce (10 guardians w/ HW platform, 5 dire avengers, 1 warwalker, and 1 wave serpent) and I really really don't know what to get next, other than a Farseer (I'm settled on that HQ choice). My options are...

a box of 6 banshees
a box of 6 scorpions
a box of 6 warp spiders
1 warwalker
1 wraithlord
a box of 5 rangers
or that box with 1 farseer and 3 warlocks

So, I would really appreciate some input as to what would be best. Also, if you can think of a better starting force using 4 boxes (guardian-priced) then I'd love to hear it, because I'm on a budget, $200CDN.

Thanks

If you don't already have them, the 40k rulebook and Codex: Eldar.

Start with the codex, not the battleforce. Look at your options, decide what you want in your army, how you want it to play, how you want it to look. If one of the craftworlds draw you, look at the units associated with it, and think about how the would work together.

Once you've done that, look at the battleforce again. Are you sure you want everything in it? If you don't want all of that, then it's no good.

The problem I have with the eldar Battleforce is the DA squad. Five is too few for a good unit, but each box comes with a full squad, so unless you bitz order the sprues for another five, you're going to be left with that lousy minimum squad regardless. In my mind, it's better to think of the five DA's in that box as conversion bits for a home-made Autarch. If you want that, then good, if not, then you're not really getting any value out of that box over just buying the walker, the tank, and the guardians separately.

But anyway, what attracted you to eldar? Are there any units or models, other then the farseer, that you know you must have? Is there a particular play style or path to victory that you want to follow? Has one of the craftworlds caught your eye? The new codex is great in that it allows multiple armies and play styles, but because of that it's hard to reccomend a straight forward 'this is what you should get' list without knowing what the player in question wants out of the list.

Do you want to be fast, running circles around your enemy, or would you rather be slow and stately?

Do you want to gun the lesser races down with superior firepower, or cut them apart in melee?

Do you love the unique character of the aspects, or are you drawn to the guardians and their elegant machines?

In what areas do you want to specialize, and in what areas to you want to branch out and cover your bases?

depends which armies you'll regularly be fighting!

scorpions for soft fleshy nids and guard

banshees for heavy armoured marines.

First thing you need to do is get onto mail order and get another 5 Avengers. Those guys rock, completely.

I would say go for the warp spiders, as they are good against anyone.

I'd say start with the Farseer + Warlock box since you need it for your HQ anyway, and you will get three warlocks to lead squads. After that Rangers/Pathfinders are nice.

1) I have the rulebook and codes so don't worry bout that
2) I'm not thrilled by jetbikes, vypers, avatar, dark reapers, hawks, harlequins, or wraithguard (wraithguard models are too expensive and look dated)
3) Of the craftworlds, I think ulthwe and iyanden are cool
4) Are units of warlocks good?
5) I would really like to get the battleforce just because it saves so much money
6) The units I like are the ones I'm debating getting, see original post.
7) Is there another way to get a good start with Eldar using 4 box sets (maybe 1x Dire Avengers, 1x Rangers, 1x Falcon/Wraithlord, 1x Banshees/scorpions + Farseer of course). Keep the replies coming, they're really helping.
8) Originally, I had trouble picking between IG, Eldar and SM. I narrowed it down to SM and Eldar (IG is a lot of money). I think Eldar are cool because I love the whole dying race thing, they just seem really tragic. Plus, they can do everything well. And finally, everyone plays marines so that kinda tipped it too (although some chapters looked cool, like space wolves, dark angels, and black templars).

Great place to start. ;)

The Craftworld colour scheme you choose does not have to dictate you army selection which is good. If you like Ulthwe with plenty of Aspect Warriors or Iyanden with no Wraithguard then go for it. Sounds like you like most of the Aspect Warriors (with a few exceptions) as well as Guardians and support stuff. That certainly gives enough scope for a good balanced army.

4) Are units of warlocks good?
They can be. But they are also expensive (points and money) and have only 1 attack on their profile. A 4+ Invulnerable save is handy but it is no better against bolter fire than it is against lascannons. I would start off with a few Warlocks to lead your Guardians. If you like them, you can add a unit of them at a later date.

5) I would really like to get the battleforce just because it saves so much money
A good reason. But it is important to make sure that you like the units in there. It would not be such a saving if it turned out you did not like one of the units in the Battleforce.

6) The units I like are the ones I'm debating getting, see original post.
Personally I like Rangers. I always field a unit and give them the Pathfinder upgrade. Most of the other units you list are a bit specialised. Rangers are good against most opponents, will give you a long ranged infantry unit and the new models are just sweet! ;) My final tip is to get the 6th Ranger from direct sales as 6 in a squad of Pathfinders will usually give you 2 AP1 hits in every volley.

7) Is there another way to get a good start with Eldar using 4 box sets (maybe 1x Dire Avengers, 1x Rangers, 1x Falcon/Wraithlord, 1x Banshees/scorpions + Farseer of course). Keep the replies coming, they're really helping.
It really depends on what army you want to build. My current Tournement army has 3 troop choices, 1 10-man unit of Avengers with an upgraded Exarch, One unit of Guardians with a Warlock and Scatter laser and one unit of Pathfinders. Between them they cover most bases and give a solid core of infantry. If you are planning a balanced army rather than a themed one, getting one of each of these units will give you a good start. I would suggest the following core although it may be a bit beyond your initial budget.

1 box Farseer
1 blister Warlock
1 box of Dire Avengers
1 box of Guardians
1 box of Rangers
1 Wraithlord
1 box of Scorpions
1 Falcon
1 box of Fire Dragons (usually riding in the Falcon)

That will give you a very flexible army somewhere around 1000 points (depending on the options you take). From there you cans ee which elements work best for you.

I thought about it and maybe the battlefore isn't the best idea. I mean 5 Dire Avengers don't seem too useful and I don't know what I would use the wave serpent for. One warwalker would get shot down pretty easily wouldn't it? It just seemed like a great deal because, basically, the warwalker is free. The contents themselves though, don't seem to work well together. Maybe this...

Farseer
1x Dire Avengers
1x Rangers
+ 1x Wraithlord and 1x Guardians
OR
+ 1x Falcon and 1x Banshees/Scorpions
OR
+ 1x Guardians and 1x Warwalker

Would that be better? I really like Eldar infantry, they seem fast and have great guns.

I think it may be best, if I don`t get the battleforce, just to get
-a box of dire avengers
-a box of rangers
-a wraithlord
-one more box of something, maybe guardians, scorpions, or warwalker?

What do you think?

Well, ideally I'd like to stall, shoot down, and frustrate Marines. I'm looking for a kind of mobile firepower army, but without too many vehicles because I really like Eldar infantry. I like the Farseer, Rangers, and I think the Wraithlord is pretty cool. Warwalkers too. But I can only buy 4 boxes (excluding the Farseer).

Thanks for any help.

im not the best myself with alot of warhammer 40k but i can help you. If you want an exellent range army but without many tanks i would choose ' Tau '. It is said that they are the best range army in the game. Plus if you want to know what they look like they are usually like you can check the games-workshop website and look up tau there. There are ships/tanks e.t.c. for them but the units are the best one's to collect i think. I was wondering if you have dawn of war dark crusade because if you choose Tau on the campaign it show's you what they look like on the video clip and in the game. So i hope this helps you, plus do you need to know anymore?

You should actually read what he is saying. He wants to play Eldar, not Tau.

To the original poster: I'd recommend Rangers, as they are useful in the most settings (and are beautiful sculpts). Other than that, why don't you just start playing a few games with what you have at that level? It should become pretty obvious for you, what you want/need then.

Jetbike are expensive ( wise) so an effective squad of them likely to cost you over 100. I converted 6 of them into a Farseer and Warlock fast attack squad.

2) I wouldn't discount Vypers, a squad of 3 of them with 2 Shuriken Cannons each is fast powerful and a real good alternative to a squad of War-Walkers (18 shots). Avatar is tough as hell and lethal in CC. Dark reapers, powerful weapons and Pinning, Hawks I've only really had one successful game with them against IG. Harleguins are deadly in CC (I've heard).

3) Why not make a craftworld of your own as there are no special rules for craftworlds anymore and make it very fluffy.

4) Warlocks are only really any good as a retinue for a Farseer and a small squad all armed with singing spears, will cut down any dreadnaught or tough HQ choice, A farseer with Guide will ensure success, also 'conceal' is very useful.

The Warwalker would be a good choice - it takes a lot to bring one down these days, and while your opponents are shooting that they'll forget about the rest of the army - I know, I've done it. :)

A Wraithlord is a good addition as it is Rock solid in asasult and Armed with Anti Tank weapons (Bright lance + Missile Launchers) it's a T8 Fearless 3W model with BS4 - Effective for taking out anything, it provides abit of firepower and assault to help you decide which way you want your list to go.

I would say 2 battleforces and a farseer with councel. But after checking the Canadian website I see that that is beyond you're budget. Maybe an idea to buy a battleforce and a farseer council and save up for anohter battleforce? Get's you a full DA unit. 2 Guardians squads, 2 warwalkers and 2 wave serpents. That should be a strong starting army.

Cheers
